And heck yeah on the representation front! I’m doing my best to write a variety of interesting characters that will help me tell the stories I want to tell. To me, the fact that they’re mostly women is both incidental and vitally important at the same time.

Tetra was my first Zelda, and I always loved her pirate captain badassery and no-nonsense attitude. I was a bit of a ‘tomboy’ (used in the non-insulting sense, simply referring to a girl who liked traditionally boyish hobbies/clothing) growing up, so I identified with Tetra real hard <3. Heckin’ loved her practical, forthright nature— and the way the games don’t hesitate to show her wackier side and how her actions sometimes get her in trouble— and how she gets out of it, with or without help.

And of course, girls can also be girly and get things done! Love the more traditionally feminine Zeldas as well; shirking feminine mannerisms definitely isn’t a requirement for a well-written female character. You can have a character wear a tiara, battle in a dress, and still be cool. Heck, you can have ’em don a soft gown, not fight at all, and still be an awesome character: maybe she genuinely wants good for the world, or maybe she controls the board with gentle magic and soft “feminine” persuasion to achieve her goals, turning foes into friends— or her pawns.

And characters don’t always have to succeed! Sometimes persuasion fails. Sometimes they argue with someone they know is right. Sometimes her sword falters. But that’s fine! That’s what makes for a good, realistic, fun character— that’s how humans are.

See, I feel like some popular media is trending towards forcing women to be *exclusively* badass, almost flawless in their physical skill yet boyish in their mannerisms.

Like, as a random example: Peach in the Mario movie. Movie Peach no longer giggles and blows kisses, because that would be too girly. And Movie Peach is a perfect platformer and politician, because female empowerment. Same thing with Galadriel in RoP (and it’s honestly a bit different and way worse with RoP Galadriel, because her mother-name is Nerwen which translates to man-maiden and she is canonically a tomboy, but they write it so badly in RoP that not even the rest of the characters in the show respect her for her over-the-top ‘female badassery.’) And as a huge, longtime fan of both the Mario series and the Silmarillion, it kinda hurt to see those Mary Sue-esque, somewhat shallow depictions of what should be complex characters.

Now, the thing is: one or two perfect characters like that are just fine! The problem lies in the fact that many of these shows have only a few female characters to begin with, and they’re all like that. Peach is kinda alright, but Galadriel’s major flaws are barely even shown because the writing has to try to make her look badass even when she’s making objectively terrible decisions.

Because here’s the thing— depicting only perfect women and minimizing flaws isn’t supporting female empowerment. Girls have flaws too, folks. Popular media relying only on the immaculate femme fatale badass just makes for a more cliche story, and imposes higher standards on young girls who look up to these characters. And the forced boyishness forces standards as well.

Why can’t Peach flutter her eyelashes, giggle, and still knock bad guys on their asses? Or, better yet, why can’t Peach flutter her eyelashes, giggle, knock bad guys on their asses, help Mario out, also get helped by Mario, and maybe admit that it took practice for her to get to where she is now?

That’s how she used to be in the middle Mario era, like Super Mario RPG, Thousand Year Door, and Super Paper Mario. Peach was feminine and still relatable to a young tomboy like myself.

I’ve rambled on for far too long, but anyways, that’s what I’m gonna try to do here with the Wisdomverse: tell stories of a bunch of different types of people, where each of them has their own take on what it means to be Zelda.

I can’t promise I’ll be perfect at writing this either, honestly. Perhaps I’ll fall into some of the same traps— I’m sure it’s hard to avoid them.

And perhaps my thoughts on this will evolve over time as well, and I’ll later have an even better understanding of how to write the characters I want to write.

Either way, I’ll certainly do my best!

have been trying (trying. key word) to read lightlark, which idk if anyones heard of it's a YA novel that went viral on tiktok awhile back from the author's pitch video which im pretty sure i watched and it just went over the premise like "would anyone read a book about: six rulers who all meet up on an island call lightlark once every hundred years to fight to the death to break the curses on their realms" and its set to dramatic music and aesthetic fantasy photos (i have done a terrible job summarizing this video i havent seen it in ages and i don't care to look it up).

and the thing is. many people REALLY like this book? (to be fair. i did go look at the goodreads page a few chapters in because i needed to check how off base i was with MY judgement of it and many people also did not like this book. which made me feel better but i digress) so i want to give it a fair shake because i don't think the author is a bad writer necessarily. some elements i really like. and i'm not that far in (it's a long book though like 600 pages and im on page 200ish. also im reading an ebook from my library so the page count may vary) so maybe it gets better?

but my first impression that i still stand by is that it's a first draft and it should have been a seventh draft at LEAST. and get a new editor who actually loves you and wants you to succeed LMAO

i absolutely despise rhysand. like i need stronger word than hatred to convey my feelings regarding him.

BUT IM EVEN MORE PISSED ABOUT THE WASTED POTENTIAL OF HIS CHARACTER!!!

in the first book he was sort of interesting character and I was actually looking forward to learn more about him. because he was actually giving morally grey character, but of course sjm had to make him the good guy while still using his 'moral greyness' as a shield against all the heinous things he did. she took a sort of morally grey character and transformed him into goody two shoes who can't do no wrong and all he does is make the world better place. like???!?!

if he was presented as 'yes, i did those terrible things and no, i don't feel remorse, because i FEEL like i had to do them' then maybe i wouldn't hate him. because i don't hate him for the things he did, more so i hate him for not being able to admit that he did them and it's wrong. and im talking about UTM, illyrian women, CoN women and children, his abusive behavior to Feyre, his weird vendetta against Nesta. all of those are wrong. period. there should be no debate, readers should be able to say 'oh, what he's doing is wrong' but instead we got rhys/feysand stans arguing that he is 'morally grey' and he had to do it blah blah blah. is sjm to blame for presenting it this certain way? yes! but also you as a reader should think about what you're reading and not parrot what is written on the paper. because news flash i can write 'color red doesn't exist' and from my pov it might seem like it really doesn't exist, but you know that is not true.

but back to his potential. his character could have gone so many interesting ways. we could have gotten redemption arc because he wanted to be a better man(fae male?) for feyre. we could have gotten corruption arc and feyre having to fight him. or he could have stayed in the morally grey area for all i care. it would also be interesting to see how his power troubles him and the question of what is okay and what no to do with it. his trauma could have been also addressed and discussion about how it manifests in his obsessive need to be in control would also be nice. but no we got this PERFECT 500 year old male with some nightmares who did bad things but only to protect the people he loves, but other than that he'd NEVER done anything bad in his life.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that all the nuance surrounding him disappeared because sjm had to self insert herself into feyre lmao.

Gush about my favorite girl? What is there left to say? Plenty, because I love her and Im obsessed with her. lmao.

She's such an amazing gal, becoming a Mercenary was the best thing she could have ever done for herself. It doesn't matter who is there besides her, she finds her place in the world. For too long she had ignored her mothers spirit calling her to fight, it doesn't matter how, just fight!

Legends are told somewhere deep in the Amazon forest, there lived a tribe of Warrior women who had abnormally long life spans, some thought of them as Goddesses.  Villages and neighboring tribes often left tributes to the Goddesses in places they had been frequently seen, to ask for their protection.  Those that kept their distance and respected the women, were rewarded with protection from others who might seek to harm the people.  Those that wished to approach the women, were met with a terrible fate. If they were lucky, it would be a quick one, and wouldn’t be used as an example.  One day, one of the Warrior women had been caught in a hunters trap. Badly wounded already from a fight with a group of poachers, the pain was too much to try and remove the spike she stepped on when she fell in the pit.  She was gonna need a minute to recover herself, but from the sounds of the footsteps of a heavy footed person was coming she didn’t have it. One of the Poachers had tracked her.. When he looked into the pit, the Amazon grabbed his ankle and tried to yank him into the pit as well. If she was gonna die, it would be fighting, but she was too weak from blood loss.  Defeat and fear in her eyes, the Poacher squatted down to look at the savage woman. Somewhere in the transition of him standing to squatting, her features changed…  She was no longer a savage looking woman capable of the horrid things they’d find in their examples.. But instead.. He saw a woman, fearing for her life, and doing what any person in her position would have done.  Helping the woman out of the pit, he took her to a neighboring Village and got her medical attention, stayed by her side the whole time. The two were unable to communicate, but by the time she was back to full health they had managed to find ways for simple conversation.  As you can tell where this story is going, The warrior woman never returned to her tribe, she and the poacher ran away together.  Who is the Warrior woman I’m talking about? Mara’s Great-Great-Great Grandmother. The story is real that Mara’s family do come from a warrior tribe of primarily women, however, they were not Goddesses, nor did they have long life spans. Which explains why Mara, and all the women before her, had all had the call to fight.

Kinda... Stupid really idk... I want to see more punk and weirdness in hell, especially elite and hell culture. Btw they could just have random Orphan Child instead of their own lol. i think it would be fun since a lot of religious propagandist people i see are fixing about "making your own blood" on tv to convice people into making demography higher.

Like idk irl so much nonconfirmity and tradition repulsiveness considered terrible sin, i think they can have way more funnier culture and things than just plain anarchy. Or, like, monarchy and feodalism, but with more kill-counts. Idk what about instead of arranged marriage send your kids to marry who they want, have kids, but THEN make their kids forcefully friends-nemesis like in phineas in ferb lmao to express their wish to destroy other family and their plans, but not so much. So they can not only create one child, but multiple, so nemesis just try they best to have a bad effect on their younger siblings lol. Or try to make them into soblings. Or try their best to piss off them all. And parents may help both sides, or just laugh at them, and be proud. Now THAT'S the arranged shit i want to see rich elite characters in lol.

And also this ancient tradition help them to develop both social skills, manipulation skills, sarcastic remarks skill, and fighting skills, of course. That'll be funnier. I kinda just love seeing nonhuman characters acting nonhuman and managing their relationships nonhumanly, im very bored of seeing patriarchy in fictional species that can just not act in this way because why.

And your writing feels so much more natural than original, because... I like original stella because how comedical she is in her evilness (hiring killer right before victim right while dinner is a hella funny thing im ready to forgive all sins and oversimplyfying for it), but actually your version of writing is more relatable, and human-looking, and humane to her. And show her as not a pure evil i love it, since Stella in canon (and fanon because her poor writing) just made into a joke... And it honestly is the thing i don't like.

It felt soo cathartic just to write it and I’d recommend anyone who hates a scene to just rewrite it on your notepad or something because that genuinely helps. The inclusion of Octavia and how his gross sexual exhibitions affect her also felt very important to me. Because he refuses to ever accept it.

Thank youuu for picking my neurons hehe. Writing Stella is interesting because she’s such a blank slate, but there’s so much untouched subtleties. Her rage tendencies, her need to have money, an obsession with parties and stimulation, clearly the only source of excitement in her life.

Where are the moms who kill husbands? Stella is the only one, and this action makes her the next mom on the chopping block apparently. Crimson murders his wife and gets yaoi made of him despite the fact that he’s straight.

I too wish there was some semblance of a punk scene but everything gets labelled goth instead. Kindve a shame. And you’re right they don’t behave like birds at all, there’s no clever animal puns or character work being done. Swans peacocks parrots owls ravens? Why?

I wish Stella could be a character, while having her occasional moments of petty villainy and comedy. Stop trying to force a comic relief character to be this Uber serious abuser or whatever. Her story is just as sad as stolas in many ways and there’s no getting around it. The projection of amber heard hate onto her is so childish.

i think that being married was genuinely like a traumatic experience for him. i think he very much did experience intense romantic attraction to his wife at first, but that it probably petered out very, very quickly and for no discernable reason (possibly just that they were incompatible in the long term, which would be obvious if not for the fact that they were still in the honeymoon phase) but he was probably a very conflict-averse person who values his ability to go with the flow, even if that flow is incredibly damaging for him to go with. its just easier to, rather than fight, escape into alcoholism and mouldering resentment. i mean, i dont say this to exuse his neligence as a husband and father, but just to explain why lol. im sure he was a terrible, terrible father in the process of all this. just also maybe that he didnt have a good time either lol. like im sure part of that feeling of being unnecessary to them was him making himself unavailable to even be neccesary.

definitely married young because he got his then-girlfriend pregnant. definitely then married her because that's the good catholic boy thing to do. (also yeah hes catholic in my mind lmao. what else is new with me. i feel like theres probably a sizeable catholic community in olathe for no reason besides i said so, because i love giving characters very catholic-y feelings lol)

i think probably, in the aftermath of this, he enjoys the freedom from his family quite a bit. like, im sure he didnt want them to die, but he probably never wanted to see them again. like the responsibility of having a family was too much for him, and he constantly failed at it, so not having that failure and pressure hanging over his head is a welcome relief, even if the method by which it happened was extremely unfortunate. i kind of imagine that loss was something more of a hollowness than a more typical sense of grief. im sure he feels very weird and bad about all of it, but thats what drinking is for! eyyyyy. probably a lot of that feeling weird and bad is worrying about the judgment of others, too.

as a result, i feel like his relationship style is probably like. none. like i imagine since his marriage was so terrible, he probably just assumes that every relationship he's in will also be terrible because he assumes he is just terrible at relationships, and does his best to actively avoid being actually romantically involved with people, to actively avoid developing feelings for people, or even like sleeping with people more than once. that said, i feel like he would fuck anyone with a pulse who gave him the go ahead lmao. he's looking for good memories (and a stiff drink ofc) more than anything! and that means trying to do as much fun stuff as he can before he dies. i do sort of feel like that its extremely possible to fall into those intense romantic feelings-- the kind he had early on with his wife-- but they, again, would probably not last a very long time, and his system of being a one-and-done lay works to insulate him from those feelings (typically)

all this stuff if meant to insulate him from pain and conflict of course. i feel like he probably lies (or "bends the truth" lol) frequently for similar reasons.

has a DUI, but has driven under the influence hundreds if not thousands of times lol. he's probably smoked weed only a few times when he was younger but he didn't know what he was doing and didn't actually get high (he probably had a bit of a placebo effect where he felt what he thought people felt while high on marijuana, which was not accurate at all) he grew up in a household where drinking was very normal and began drinking as a very young teen (13 or 14?) also a casual smoker, especially likes to smoke after sex or a good meal.

he's a bit of a square, and especially was one before the flash. he definitely did things that were expected of him (i.e. getting married) because that was the normal thing to do more than because he wanted to. he had a pretty deep investment in appearing to be normal before the flash. after the flash, he's not nearly as worried, but he still has some residual mindsets that are hard to get over, which lead him to do things like, for example, consider himself to be straight lol

he obviously has a very high tolerance for alcohol and could drink any other party member under the table.

he "likes" birdie, but birdie also makes him feel extremely insecure about how terrible he was as a father and how little he cares that his family is dead. sometimes, this causes him to lash out at birdie in really stupid ways, like over-exaggerating just how little he cared about his family to upset birdie. he does regret doing this because it makes birdie cry. birdie does not really like olan because of this type of behavior, but often forgets that when he's particularly plastered, and olan is usually the only person who is willing to drink as much as he is, so they do hang out together despite both of them kind of not enjoying the experience at all.

he likes brad a lot because brad is very weird lmao. he's just curious about him and asks him a lot of questions (most of which brad does not answer of course) and wants brad to like and trust him. he also wants to make brad have fun and relax (good luck with that one bud... lmao)

I don't think he has much interest in buddy at all? he fully supports brad abandoning his quest to save her, of course, mostly because he doesnt see the point of it.

he probably gets along with nern pretty well but definitely only enjoys his rambly ass stories when he's good and drunk. they complain about their dead wives with each other. yeah he probably kind of sucks about women, not in like a malicious way per se but more in the sense that he's just an idiot man. basically. lmao. but nern really brings out the worst in him on the subject of women.

he likes terry a lot because terry is a ridiculous person and a lot of fun. ignoring the fact that i ship them, i think he just really enjoys what a silly, weird dude he is. he is probably a longtime hint enjoyer and was pleased to meet the guy who wrote them all. NOT ignoring that i ship them, i feel like olan sort of views terry as one would a manic pixie dream girl, like, terry makes his life so exciting! he's going to pull olan out of this existential mire! he's making olan feel things again! he's damaged and desperate for love! and he's such a freak in bed! idk. its not the most accurate of reads is all im saying. idk how it would work out in the longrun with them, though. i think olan would kind of maybe slide into his avoidant-resentful mode if enough time passed, but it might take longer than it did with his wife because theyre just really good at having sex with each other lol.

he's probably been to the beehive like plenty of times so queen roger knows of him and he knows of queen roger, but i doubt theyve encountered each other much outside of maybe roger kicking him out on his ass because he was too drunk or trying to sleep there like its a hotel

Here’s my orc thoughts:

Basically every depiction of orcs so far has been blatantly racist and not very good

This is extremely fixable

This is gonna be an essay, buckle up:

So much of orc characterization focuses on them being a violent, savage, uncivilized, tribal people which unfortunately translates directly to racist stereotypes that have been held about most non-white people at some point in time, particularly Africans and Native Americans. We do not like that. Also, Tolkien himself described orcs as "squat, broad, flat-nosed, sallow-skinned, with wide mouths and slant eyes: in fact degraded and repulsive versions of the (to Europeans) least lovely Mongol-types." We do not like that either.

D&D continues this trend by essentially saying "all orcs are ugly aggressive buff mean as shit and they all die young if you like orcs fuck you. they're omnicidal savages. eat shit and die" which makes me, an orc-liker, deeply unhappy.

How is this fixable, you ask?

First of all: this post has been living in my brain rent free for months. Please go look at it.

Second of all: there's so much potential with orcs if you retain them as a tribal people who are not in the least aggressive when left the fuck alone!! They can still be tribal that is (obviously) not inherently wrong but it would be WAY BETTER for them to be a close-knit and collectivist society! You know, like many tribes are! And perhaps the in-universe stereotype of aggressiveness comes from the fact that they are trained from youth to defend the tribe. But that is exactly what it is: defense. They roam the land and never attack first, but will fight to the death when threatened. When not engaged in conflict, they are excellent artisans. It's just, nobody notices that part. They are an insular people, but every so often some of them leave their tribe to seek a separate fortune. (none of this "all half-orcs are the product of terrible circumstances" shit from the dnd wiki. Stop that.)

Also: the stereotype of orcs as uneducated comes from the fact that very few of them can write. It's a trade passed along from master to apprentice for the rare occasions when they do need to interact with outsiders. However, orc tribes have a rich oral tradition and pass information through stories and parables. Most orcs have excellent memories for information that is shared verbally. Also, art (particularly paintings and textiles) is another medium used for storytelling! The lack of a written language does not equal a lack of knowledge. People just aren't looking in the right places.

Furthermore: let's stop doing this "orcs as a monolith" thing. They have varied senses of morality influenced by culture but ultimately up to the individual. Different tribes of orcs have different cultures, dialects, crafting styles, etc. They are all "orcs" but do not all get along or act the same! (much like people who ask me "why don't you act black?" some orcs are probably asked "why don't you act like an orc?" stop doing this.)

Lastly: I'm redacting the "orcs rarely live past 45 years" shit from d&d bc I don't like it lmao that's the only reason on that one. Here is my new hot take: orcs are extremely protective of their elders especially as a society with oral traditions which is why they are rarely seen by outsiders. Orcs still have shorter lifespans than humans but if an old human is 70 an old orc is 60. Not a huge difference, but noticeable.

Disclaimer: I am not immersed in D&D lore. My autistic hyperfixation™ since I started playing skyrim has been orcs and I am consuming orc lore voraciously. I have many thoughts about this feel free to ask me for more of them.

Hoes really be like "if you perceive orcs as racist stereotypes maybe it is because you are racist" but here is the thing: Living in close-knit communities and honing specific skills, being seen as backwards and barbaric even though it's what you've always done. Being judged because of your appearance, perhaps even considered cursed, but you've always looked like this, and you still think your mother and sisters are beautiful even if no-one else does. Being used only for strength, important only when someone needs something from you, intellectual achievements either disregarded or seen as isolated incidents, constantly fighting to prove yourself in a world where everyone has already decided what you are. By god that is relatable as a person of color!! And then to say "and also all of these people are evil and ugly and there is no hope for any of them and they will all die young" kind of hits different when you are seeing yourself in them. you ask me this to make me suffer personally... one favourite thing... aughhh okay i love his straightforwardness and how that can come across bluntly and violently in some situations yes but also surprisingly earnest and sweet. he always says what he feels and that means both sides of the spectrum. it’s kind of a breath of fresh air to have a character like that when you’re as nervous and reserved as me lmao so that’s what i have the most fun with when writing and playing as him

played the OW2 beta again and literally couldn’t keep playing past a small handful of matches before getting a headache.

The lighting is done horrendously, even on nighttime maps, and I have lowered gamma and brightness by default bc I’m sensitive to things that are bright. I cannot fathom how much more painful the betas graphics would be on the default settings and honestly, I don’t want to lmao.

The red effect you get on screen when you get hit by something is absolutely obnoxiously bright and there’s no setting to either customize the brightness or turn it off altogether - it’s incredibly distracting and disorienting when you’re mid-fight and trying to concentrate. Like yes, I took half my health in damage game that’s nice, it’d be easier to get out of this situation if my entire screen wasn’t currently assaulting my eyes with brightness. I can’t see shit through it when I’m playing Mercy and it got me killed several times because it just hurts to look at and makes visibility nonexistent.

Gameplay wise it’s marginally better now that Mercy has an ult that actually functions - I can actually keep my team up now, yay!

On that note please god tone down how often her voicelines trigger it is so obnoxious how often she’s chattering on like please. please. I need to be able to hear things as Mercy that aren’t just Mercy never shutting the fuck up.

Doomfist is. not terribly effective? I feel like they could have kept his reworked kit on him as a DPS with very minimal issue honestly. like i had a doomfist just pingpong balling me around as Mercy and it was about as annoying as a fruit fly hovering around you

Dive tanks/flank tanks are in a really fucking weird place now as solotanks. I can’t say having a winston being maintank isn’t interesting and a little fun but. if they have a sniper and there’s a teamfight on point he can’t really be in two places at once? there’s fewer ways to shut down snipers outside of your dps actually killing them and like. im sorry but i dont trust my dps to do anything honestly. 3k hours in this game has taught me far better than to have faith in my teammates, that is a fools errand. have no faith and be pleasantly surprised when you have competent dps players. 

Lucio is pretty fun to play on beta, however playing zen is spawn simulator and I am not touching him again during beta unless he gets some changes

games are still basically ‘whoever forms into a deathball first wins’ which is kind of unexciting. still mostly rolls in todays games. no real exciting drawn out teamfights with cool clutch plays or anything.

still not terribly impressed with the beta. it feels like overwatch but worse honestly. the characters were all made for a 6v6 game and balanced around 6v6, making them work 5v5 is... not really going to work that great for some of them without changing their kits entirely.
