i just posted but i feel INSANE hua cheng’s entire appearance in the ghost groom arc is just symbolism.
when xie lian is alone (having sent everyone away, in danger but perfectly capable of fighting his way out), hua cheng steps in front of xie lian, offers his hand, and guides xie lian through the woods to where he needs to be. monsters cower before him, magical barriers don’t stop him, he steps on the skulls of enemies and crushes them so thoroughly that xie lian behind him feels like he is walking on flat ground. he doesn’t just swoop in without asking — he offers his hand, and waits, and xie lian willingly reaches out and lets himself be guided. and his grip is featherlight, even as he steers xie lian through danger and darkness. his blood rain warns away all who would dare harm them, but xie lian doesn’t get hit by a drop. and hua cheng does this all in his true form, not in disguise, because he’s not playing a character or trying to achieve anything, this is just him. despite not being confident enough to face xie lian directly, hua cheng has already shown him exactly who he is.
(now excuse me while i gnaw through an entire wall because how was this not glaringly obvious to me all along)

Hi! So I am very new to Hadestown and I am watching the bootleg. I really love the dynamic between Hades and Persephone, but there is one thing that kind of rub me in not so good way, is Hey Little Song Bird implied that Hades and Eurydice slept together? I am seeing a lot of interpretation and it genuinely confused the hell out of me asdfghk
Hi! Well, tbf it's a tricky question, but the short answer is that Hadestown suggests that something might have happened behind closed doors. The rest is up to audience and actor's interpretation.
For example, Anaïs Mitchell often mentions in Working On a Song that in early workshops she often went with the idea that Hades cheats and pretty regularly even though these affairs mean nothing to him since the only person he loves is Persephone. It even had a cut song:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In her early drafts/productions of Hadestown you can often get the vibe that from her point of view it doesn't matter as much because they are eternal beings and love each other since the world began so does it even matter for them?
However, by NYTW this story line was cut apart from Persephone's line in How Long:
"I don't mind if you look at other girls, now and then"
"The girl means nothing to me"
"I know"
Plus the staging in NYTW Papers and Hades' protective peacock behavior with Eurydice around Orpheus in the scene also gives you a thought that they might have had an affair? Plus some bits like the fact that she has a line in Why We Build a Wall and her words "But don't you see? That's different with me!" - "Different than who? They thought they were different too!" Could also be interpreted as Hades suggesting some special conditions by granting her a role of a romantic interest. Whether the interest is real or not and did he use it or not is again up to your interpretation of NYTW Hades. He is more of a morally dubious guy (as all ht Hades are) so it's more up to you to either believe he would have cheated to put Persephone in her place or would just use showing off Eurydice as a brutal way to get Persephone's interest.
As for Broadway, I think it's still suggested and you can find profs in the lyrics but I think that they are what they are - suggestive and leave you to interprete it whichever way you feel comfortable. I think the biggest suggestion remains in Flowers with the line:
'I trembled when he laid me out
"You won’t feel a thing," he said, "when you go down"'
Which kinda can have a death meaning and sex meaning, tbf someone could have written a good article on how those topics are connected in Hadestown. So here, again chose one of the two or both.
But again, Broadway also changed the lyrics in How Long and the whole staging in Papers so it's less suggestive.
My personal opinion based on Broadway production is that it all depends on how the actor plays it and whether you believe this particular Hades is the type to sleep with Eurydice to get Persephone's attention and prove he is still attractive or he is more of a person who doesn't care about having the affair and his only goal is to get Persephone to react somehow by composing such a messed up hurtful plan. Personally, I prefer the second option maybe because I'm a pussy or maybe because I see Hades (whom I mostly base on Patrick Page ht Broadway previews) like a person who is desperate to get Persephone's attention in such a radical way like a cat pushing objects from your table to see your reaction. He wants to be stopped, he wants any reaction from Persephone. He even touches her by the shoulder before going into the office like "Look!! Look! I'm absolutely totally leaving! To cheat! See! Hey come on! I'll even take off my tie to show that I'm serious! Don't you wanna stop me???". Seems kinda way too extra to me. Like he could have just gotten to the office after parading a pretty girl in front of her and it would be understood that it's for an affair. But he takes so much time to make sure she understands that he can find himself someone when all he wants is for her to come back to him with open arms. I'm not sure he has the guts to actually damage his relationship to an irreversible degree (considering Broadway Hades is never stated as a cheater before the Eurydice sub-plot). Like it's one thing to take a mortal before her time and parade her in front of your wife (because what is a mortal life after all?) as a "replacement" and it's the other way to actually cheat on her and deal with the fact that she might never forgive him again if it is a deal-breaker for her considering they seem to be true to each other for all these years.
One interesting thing to note here as well is how Hades actors play the reaction to Persephone's line in How Long:
"He has the kind if love that you and I once had"
Because his instant reaction is "OH SHIT once had?? Does she think I don't love her still?? OH SHIT I BROUGHT THE GIRL THIS IS WHY SHE MIGHT THINK THAT", so he answers to that:
"The girl means nothing to me!"
Depending on the actor and she show the line sounds either scared, confused, angry, undignified etc. So it's once again up to you to interprete why he reacts this way: is he angry because she suggested he would actually cheated on her? Is he angry because she called him out on that affair? Is he confused and scared because she thinks he doesn't love her anymore because of his foolish decision to tease her in such a cruel way?
That's up to you.
P.S. I think one of the most interesting studies of the subject and Hades' character that I've read in a fic for that matter was the Songbird chapter of Winters Nigh and Summers O're. You can check it out, but I will warn you that it's probably one of the heaviest chapters of that fic in the emotional sense and it has explicit parts (don't worry, nothing bad happens to Eurydice. Well...apart from dying, I guess), so check out the warnings if you decide to read it.

The Spencer Song
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
summary: Spencer’s best friend, Y/n, can’t take Spencer locking himself in the apartment anymore.
warnings: quick mention of death, maeves arch, brief mention of spencer’s addiction and relapsing (he doesn’t it’s just mentioned) and a quick mention of unaliving (again it doesn’t happened but it’s mentioned quickly. reader it’s just worried about him) Spencer sad and crying but mainly comforting
couple: spencer reid x fem!reader
taglist: @ssavanessa22, @hey-dw, @reidselle, @demigirl2007, @matthew-gray-gubler-lover, @nomajdetective, @cance1medaddy, @doctorspenceryeet, @all-tings-diego. If you wanna join my taglist here it is the link. (and if you wanna be removed let me know)
honestly this is exactly what the team should’ve done when spencer locked himself in the apartment. it also reminds me of that post @boldlyvoid did on how they’d kick spencer’s door down when this happened 🫶🏻
Tumblr media
The young agent was worried about her best friend and also coworker, Spencer Reid. Spencer loved a woman who was out of his reach, not because she didn't love him back, but because as well as the tale of Orpheus and Eurydice, she was taken by the god of death, being held by the forever dream. He had to see her, being taken in front of his eyes, while Y/n saw how the love of her life fell for another person who wasn't her, saying they both were heartbroken for different reasons and for different people.
But she didn't care about that anymore, she didn't care when Spencer didn’t reply texts or calls and didn't open the door when all his friends went and knocked.
To say she was worried, was an understatement.
She heard how Hotch told her, Garcia, and JJ to just give him time, that he wanted to be alone and he was gonna come back whenever he was ready.
It didn't sit right with her, she didn't want to just wait and she couldn't believe the others just agreed on waiting. They went to knock on his door and leave him stuff but weren't they worried he was gonna relapse, or even worse, do something to himself?
She sat in Pen’s office while she moved in the chair, thinking, thinking about him. She always thought about him, even if he didn’t even think of her, or maybe he did, but not as the same as she did for him.
When he first told her about Maeve, and how he described her as “The most beautiful girl in the world to me,” she wanted to throw up. She wanted to hide away and cry. Of course she knew that Spencer did not loved her back, but to know he loves someone else deeply hurt her. She put on a smile whatsoever, told him and gave him advice, and when she was taken away from him, she was the one holding him.
While he sobbed on his knees on the floor, he was in shock. She held him, making him bury his face in her neck so he wouldn't have to see, covering his ears so he wouldn't have to hear.
He held her just as strongly, crying into her neck. It felt nice that someone was holding him, he felt good that she was holding him.
After that, she led him away and took him home safely, making sure he went to bed. She left something for him to just heat in the morning and left the apartment.
But after that, she wrote him, and he did not answer.
She called and he did not answer.
She went to his apartment and he didn't open the door. It made her worry, but she couldn't do anything more. She wanted to, she was incredibly worried.
Pen frowned looking at her, and sighed, her and Morgan being the only ones who knew about her crush, it broke their heart when she came to them crying because “Spencer loves someone else and it isn't me,” but Pen knew she was worried about him. About him not answering her, about him locking himself in the apartment.
“Love, he's gonna be okay…” She tried to encourage.
“What if he's not Pen?” she whimpered.
“He's Spencer, he's gonna be okay.”
Y/n nodded, but she didn't believe the blonde girl's words. They didn't know Spencer like her, he always locked himself away but not from her, she was his best friend. I mean, yeah JJ was as well, but JJ had kids and a husband, meanwhile Y/n, well, she had him.
She couldn't leave this like this. She couldn't just leave him like everyone else did. Maybe it's because they don't love him like she does, of course they don't, because she's in love with him, because he is the first and last thought of her day, because she wants him.
She sighed and made her way to her car, she wasn't gonna leave this like this. She wasn't gonna leave him.
She made tiredly her way to Spencer's building, door 23. The baskets placed outside carefully, just two weren't there, hers, and the one Penelope left. She smiled softly knowing that at least he took a little bit of what they left.
She knocked carefully, “Spencer,” she called, pressing her ear against the door, “I know you are in there,” she says, “Can you please come out and just tell me you are alive?”
Nothing.
Not even a sound from the other side, she sighed, but not defeated yet.
“Alright if that's what you want. I won't leave until you come out, and I am serious.”
She moved the baskets a little bit to the side so she could sit against the door with her legs crossed, “We all missed you. Today's case was interesting. You know how I'm always talking about the police dogs? Well I got to work with them. There was this one, her name was Luna, she was the cutest. I really want one, do you think I should get one?”
He didn't answer, of course.
“Mmm it feels awful when you ignore me. It's like I'm talking to the door,” she tried to joke.
Spencer, from the other side, smiled at her lame joke.
She smiled sadly, “Well are you gonna eat this? Cause Morgan here brought some almonds and you know how much i love them,” she grabbed the basket and picked up the card he left for him, “Dear Spencer, I brought this little gift for you. I know it's not a lot, but it's with so much love, your brother, Derek.”
Spencer wiped the tears on his face after hearing her, of course he saw the basket, but he didnt think too much of it, he sniffed silently and sat on the floor with his legs crossed.
“Aww that's so cute,” Y/n said, “I'm still eating the almonds though. “
The doctor chuckled softly.
With her fingertips trembling a little, she picked up a little almond and brought it to her mouth, chewing softly. A door on the other side of the hallway, opened, after hearing someone talking, Y/n looked at them and smiled, “Spencer, one of your neighbors is so nosey please open the door so i don't have to give explanations,” she whispered.
Spencer didn't though, she sighed, “Thanks bestie.”
He felt guilty, yet did not move.
Half of the day has passed, Spencer hasn't opened the door, but she wasn’t gonna give up.
“I know what's gonna cheer us up,” the young agent said, “A little song!”
Spencer groaned, softly. She was always doing that, making up songs everytime, which, deep down he liked, but he wasn't gonna confess that to her, otherwise she'd tease him.
“This is the Spencer song,” she said, “Spencer spenceeer, please open the door,
“I’m gonna eat all your food in these baskets and you're gonna end up with nothing at all. Spencer Spenceeer please open the door, this hardwood floor is a pain in the ass and-”
Spencer opened the door, which made her fall back, she groaned and looked up, looking at him, who was sitting on the floor.
Red eyes, dark circles, hair a mess, but he still managed to be the most beautiful man to her, she smiled, “Hey there fancy seeing you here mate!” she tried to make a british accent, he just stared at her.
“You don't give up, do you?” He spoke, with a raspy voice.
“Nope. Stubbornness 101 my friend,” Spencer rolled his eyes.
He stood up, and walked inside of the apartment, sitting down on the couch where he had a couple of cans of drinks, books and a photo of Maeve.
Y/n stood up, closing the door and walked to him, sitting down next to him. Picking up some cans from the floor and putting it on the table in front, she looked at him, who was staring at the photo, she smiled sadly.
“You wanna talk about it?” she asked.
Spencer shook his head, biting his lower lip, the tears threatening to come out once again, his lip quivered. Y/n quickly pushed him into her chest, which Spencer didn’t fight back, he quickly hugged her burying himself into her arms while she played with his hair, while she shushed him, “it’s okay Spencer it’s all fine you’re safe with me okay? you’re okay,” she comforted.
He nodded, he believed her, he was safe now.

Looking Back
Tumblr media
(Dieter x horror loving female)
Words: 967
Summary: while at an exhibition with your fiancé, you encounter someone from your past (check out my masterlist to check out the timeline)
Warnings: lost romantic potential, Dieter being Dieter, an underrated pioneer of animation gets a mention so please check them out before or after reading this
Artwork is a sculpture by Spas Kirchev
“I’m so glad you suggested this! Although you should have started with stop motion with shadow puppets.”
“I was getting there but was distracted by all the history stuff. I did get you interested with early German cinema though.”
“That’s true.”
The two of you were having a date night. Your fiancé Dieter had mentioned an exhibition by some animation students presenting their final year project.
The theme was Lotte Reiniger, a pioneer of the animation world who used shadow puppets as her medium. These students were to pick a piece of music and create their own short films inspired by Reiniger. Several clips from her over 40 films were dotted around the exhibition in between a few small alcoves where the students’ films were being presented.
You just came out of one short film based on the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice. The small dark space encouraged much snuggling.
“Look,” Dieter pointed out to a screen on the wall. “The Adventures of Prince Achmed is the oldest surviving feature length animated film. It predates Snow White by a decade. Then Walt went and stole her ideas and never gave her credit, the bastard.”
“I thought you loved Disney.”
“I love the films but the man himself? Don’t get me started on his original idea for Epcot.”
“You are adorable when you’re in history mode.”
“Not sexy?”
“A little bit. But you’re always sexy.”
“You’re always sexy.” You tried to brush off this compliment but stopped dead in your tracks and hid behind his broad back. “What is it honey cakes?”
“I just saw someone from my past.”
“From New Zealand?”
“No, from when I first moved here. I made friends with this guy called Orfi.”
“Orfi?”
“It’s short for something, I never asked though,” he turned around to face so you could continue. “We became fast friends, always having the randomest conversations and hanging out occasionally but then he just dropped out of communication. It was only later I found out from other friends that he got himself a girlfriend. Her name was Dizzy or Dolce, or something.”
“What a dick,” you shrugged. “Wait, did you have romantic type feelings for him?”
“I don’t know. I don’t think I trust myself enough to see if it was going in that direction. When I look back on it, there was a possible maybe but by that time, it was too late.”
“Were you ready by the time we met?”
“We met at the right time,” you looked over at your former friend. “I should really go and say hi to him, but I’ll go alone; you might be too distracting.”
“Because of my devilish good looks?”
“That too, but also you’re an award-winning actor.”
“Is that all anyone focuses on?” you patted his shoulder as you made your way over.
You must have willed yourself over there, the ground feeling like mud under your feet. Your hand felt heavy as you raised it into a wave, catching his attention.
“Oh hey, fancy seeing you here.”
“Well, you know it’s early German cinema so…”
“Yeah, couldn’t help but think of you.”
All those past emotions hit you like a sudden wave in the ocean. You tried to not get caught in the current and be lost in the past and decided to go forward with the conversation.
“How is…sorry, I forgot her name.”
“Disay? Oh no, we’re no longer together.”
“Oh, I’m sorry.”
“Yeah, it didn’t work out. Looking back, we just weren’t meant to be together. Now I’m single for the first time in a long time,” the laugh was awkward. “Let me guess, you’re still single?”
“No, I’m with someone.”
“Is it serious?”
“We’re getting married so yes, it’s very serious.”
“Oh, uh, congratulations.”
“Thanks,” you looked at the ring on your finger, not noticing the look of sadness on his face which had gone by the time you looked back up. “It was nice seeing you.”
“Yeah, you too.”
“I’ll message you some time.”
Those emotions you thought you had were gone like the tides of the ocean. You waved a small goodbye and tried to not make it look like you were rushing back into the safety of your fiancé’s arms.
“He looked like an Eeyore.”
“Did he?”
“Almost like you were the one that got away.”
“Was I?”
“I think you were. And you know what, fuck him.”
“Yeah, his loss.”
“He was too stupid to realise he had the most amazing, beautiful, caring…”
“Dieter, we don’t need to go through the alphabet.”
“Well, an alphabet list of what makes you, you and he was an idiot to see you.”
“I’m glad I have you, I think I made the better choice. Definitely the most handsome choice.”
Dieter gave a small cursory glance over at the other man. “He has a bit of an Oscar Isaac look about him.”
“He does now that you mention it.”
“Wait, you know who he is?” you nodded. “I thought you only knew actors if they were in a horror film.”
You gave him that look that he knew oh too well.
“Okay, what horror films has he been in?”
“Annihilation, that’s the one with the scary bear,” Dieter shuddered at the thought. “I think Ex Machina is more of a thriller.”
“Those dance moves were thriller,” you looked at him in surprise. “I’ve seen the clips.”
“And you’ve learnt the moves?”
He held you close, almost as if he was about to launch you into a waltz, “Of course I have.”
“You want to show me some other moves, don’t you?” he mumbled something affirmative into your lips.
So he took your hand and led you out.
As you left the exhibition, neither of you looked back. You only had the future to look forward to.
Lovingly tagging @boliv-jenta @simpingcowboy @ellenmunn @o-sacra-virgo-laudes-tibi @chaithetics @myloveistoolittle @cevans-is-classic @glshmbl @cupcakehp @gswizzsstuff

honestly fingers crossed that this hades 2 odypen breakup is a orpheus/eurydice situation where you still reunite them. you do so in the first hades game, where eurydice is upset at orpheus for looking back. so maybe its a similar get em back together situation, although im not sure how thatd track, with the whole unabashed "i found it hard to extract myself from the arms of certain goddesses, sometimes i feel that they were my weakness" thing odysseus has going on--anyways, if that is the case, would you want to know or would you rather just push this out of your head forever? dont wanna bring it up if its upsetting!
If it's a strange "we're getting you back together" then sure, I'd like to hear about it.
I will say though, it still feels VERY outta character for Penelope to just... give up on him. Even if she outright got the answer of "hey, I slept with those women" I think she would've needled the truth outta him you know?
Like she knows her husband, I have a feeling that she knew damn well that was him while he was disguised. I think she knows when she's lying or when he's just...upset. They're likeminded. I love the thought of her just being like "no, I know somethings up. wait, you're saying you had fear in every step??? Odysseus, that means that's...not consent."
But if they somehow fix this blunder then yeah! :D I'd like to hear about it.

I finally listened to Hadestown! 🎉
Starting with the Original Cast Recording, ‘cause might as well do it in release order. Loved it! Groovy music. Snickered. Cried. Wrote down my reaction as I went, so if you're chill with rambled thoughts and observations, here you go lol
(Soz for any typos, I was touch typing most of the time, and I've edited it but probs missed stuff)
Road to Hell (Live)
Oh it’s JAZZY. Huh. Didn't expect that, but I am living.
I like how at the start they’re simulating a train’s chugging.
Those call and response harmonies tho *chef's kiss*
Kinda reminds me of Udad.
Oh that’s Hermes!
“It’s a sad song” he says, while singing the boppiest of bops.
I like that “suitcase full of summertime” line.
“About someone... who tries.” Oho, we’re gettin into it now! *rubs hands together*
Also, I completely get now why Jorge said that first draft of EPIC: The Musical Hermes was like Hadestown.
Livin' It Up on Top (Live)
That’s a smooth transition👌
Persephone’s voice is really cool. Kinda rough texture?
Oh I didn’t realise Persephone and Hades would be having a turbulent relationship in this.
Oooh Orpheus’ voice is smooth.
They’re all so happy huh. Welp, you know there’s gonna be a crash in their future.
Orpheus seems really grateful for Persephone’s... graciousness? When he said that she'll always fill their cups and they'll raise them to her and stuff. Theory: either she’ll have a soft spot for him later, or he’ll feel betrayed and blindsided by the more cold side of her later.
All I've Ever Known (Live)
I don’t know anything about Eurydice, but is this her song?
Ah yeah Orpheus is singing, so it must be.
Oop. Foreshadowing.
Way Down Hadestown (Live)
Hermes is back!
“Bored to death” HA
“Graveyard” wow the puns/metaphors are going hard XD
I can’t tell who’s singing lmao. This is like when I listened to Hamilton for the first time. I’ll need lyrics, or familiarity RIP
The coins as the percussion/tambourine is a nice touch.
Hades’ voice is DEEP.
They haven’t mentioned gods yet, I don’t think? Just the Fates, right? It sounds more like a mining operation metaphor for mythos right now, hmm.
Epic II (Live)
King of diamonds and spades - like the playing card suits, but also like the mining operation.
It’s the La la la la thing from Wolfy’s animatic! Almost. A different rendition - I bet I'll hear that later 👀
Why is it called Epic II? Where’s 1? Am I missing something?
Chant (Live)
Oh they’re doing overlapping meodies!!
Ah wait this is Eurydice now, gotta go back a few seconds to catch that. I keep getting her mixed up with Persephone 😅
Oh now we’ve got Eurydice and Orpheus relationship troubles? Huh, I kinda assumed they’d be the perfect couple till her death.
And a semi callback to her song, nice.
Hay Little Songbird (Live)
DAMN his voice is deep!
Is this Eurydice??
Is- Is Hades seducing her? To work for him of smth? Ummm.
Not the canary!
That shaker sounds like a rattlesnake, and it does not bode well for a little bird.
When the Chips are Down (Live)
Oh hey I was right! It is a metaphorical rattlesnake!
Does she choose to go to the Underworld of her own volition? I thought she like- died.
Gone I'm Gone (Live)
She does??
Ouch. She sounds so resigned.
Is this a metaphor for her starving to death? Oof.
The harmonies!!
Wait for Me (Live)
“Six feet under” oh yep.
“Lay low, stay outta sight” - getting Hamilton's Stay Alive vibes.
“Don’t look back” ah. FORESHADOWING.
Ohhh the River Styx being a high wall is so smart!
“And don’t look no one in the eye” I must be too deep in the Odyssey related fandoms, because I'm seeing puns where there are none lmao
The HARMONIES!
Poor Orpheus, but I mean, he was kinda being a bit… naive? If he didn’t prepare for winter and just went off in his own head to make songs?
Why We Build the Wall (Live)
Free from who?
Enemy? 👀
(Yes, I'm aware I'm being led into asking all the questions he wants me to ask, but in my defence, it's very effective.)
Oh huh. Wasn't expecting it to be poverty, tho maybe I should've.
Him calling them “My children” plus the chanting is uh. Why does this sound like cult propaganda?
His voice sounds like the Ozymandias poem guy.
Also giving Frollo “She ran, I pursued” vocal vibes.
“Behind closed doors” - ominous.
Ha! Ok nice subversion.
Our Lady of the Underground (Live)
Persepone is a drug dealer XD
That’s a strange note on “there’s a crack in the wall”
Oh no, am I supposed to remember all these band member names? *crying*
Way Down Hadestown II (Live)
Bringing back motifs I see.
The pickaxes as percussion is cool.
Oop, Eurydice is getting a bit of a wake up call.
Chant II (Live)
Ooooh does the ‘backdoor’ Hermes meant, mean that Orpheus doesn’t have to ‘die’ to get there? ‘Cause he didn’t sign anything, which is a metaphor for him not actually being dead in the myth, so he can still leave.
“Hungry for the underworld” - the pomegranate?
And now Eurydice and Orpheus are singing half the La la la la tune each as if to each other from across the Underworld!
Ooh I LIKE those slant rhymes! "Young man, you can strum your lyre, I have strung the world in wire."
Oh this is where Orpheus sings his plea!! I know this is a thing because of Udad's Underworld Blues lol.
Epic III (Live)
The harmonies 🥺
Oh! It’s that part from Wolfy's animatic :O
I’m tearing up bro.
Just thinking that Eurydice was so upset with Orpheus for focusing on writing his song about Hades and Persephone, but it's that very song that is giving him a chance to sway Hades' mind. But on the other hand, if he'd focused less on the song, he never would've had to use it, y'know?
Word to the Wise (Live)
Ha the Fates(?) doing Hades’ inner monologue like, yeah bro u screwed yourself.
Uh oh this is probs where Hades comes up with the ultimatum. Wait no don't-
His Kiss the Riot (Live)
Those strings are creepy.
Belladonna? Oh the poisonous flower.
Did he call Orpheus the Jack of Hearts?
That acordian is awesome.
Fuck, I knew it.
He sounds like the guy who does the creepily ominous monologue in Micheal Jackson's Thriller.
Promises (Live)
Oh huh. It’s my theory from the 2nd song but it's Eurydice feeling betrayed that the world isn't always plentiful and not Orpheus?
Those strings are gorgeous!
Oh! A duet!
When the couple actually works out their shit:
“I do” omgggg!
KEEP WALKING. DONT LOOK BACK.
Wait for Me II (Live)
Aww that’s nice. Persephone and Hades are gonna try too!
Oh no not the “wait” like in Hurricane-
Doubt Come In (Live)
Oh noooooo
KEEP GOING. JUST KEEP GOING. SHE’S WITH YOU
OH NOOOO DON’T FALTER
LISTEN TO HER! HOLD ON! KEEP GOING!
... Oh god
Road to Hell II (Live)
NO THERE'S A FUCKING AD
Hermes sounds so sad but resigned. Like, 'Oh well. I knew it would turn out like this, but I'd hoped.' Which like. SAME.
The instruments stripped away so it's only silence and one voice is so good.
I can just imagine Orpheus collapsed shell shocked on stage as Hermes not unkindly pushes him to go on.
That reprise and ending is so fucking good AHHH omg no regrets. Some regrets. Whatever, it was good.
... Time to listen to it again with lyrics :D
And then I'm gonna listen to the Original Broadway Cast Recording!

heck I will never get over the themes of the mc and all their relationships, though at the moment all the life/death, winter/spring, two-halves-of-the-same-cycle of hades/mc is at the forefront bc that's the last route I played lol. spring is more than just Plants, it is the hope and determination and pure will of life to push its way to the sun and flourish even after the longest, coldest winters. i adore the orpheus/eurydice story and Spring being able to go to eurydice, a dead spirit about to climb up to the sun, and be like 'hey. you can do something here. remember that you can do something." (and Orpheus, too, of course, I just personally love mc of all people reminding eurydice that she has Agency!) just. you handle it all so well. i adore 💛
also on a more fun yet barely related note, I know on Hades' route his power & being connected to everything feels alien to mc, but admittedly my first thought as a reader was 'omg it's a root system' lmao
I won't lie, anon. Even though it's talking to Orpheus that gets my personal favorite ending, overall I'm a bigger fan of the talking to Eurydice options. I really do love her, and giving her some agency is a thing I was definitely trying to do. :)
Also, it would not surprise me if that is the way a lot of Hades-path PCs come to view that aspect of the power!

Hey, please scream about Turgon and Elenwë at your earliest convenience.
HI, DO YOU HAVE APPROXIMATELY 200,000 YEARS TO SPARE?
NO? 'THAT'S AN UNREASONABLE AMOUNT OF TIME,' YOU SAY?
FINE, I WILL ATTEMPT TO CONDENSE THIS INTO ONE TUMBLR POST.
TOP 10 HEADCANONS/THOUGHTS ABOUT TURGONxELENWE:
I think their attraction to one another was instant. Literally I headcanon a "spotted across a crowded square in Valimar" meetcute, in which Turgon thinks "WOW THIS IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SMOL WOMAN I HAVE EVER SEEN WITH MY OWN TWO EYEBALLS" and Elenwë is like "check out that stern-faced hottie with a bodyyyy" 👀👀. And of course Turgon is Socially Awkward AF, but luckily Finrod is RIGHT THERE to witness EVERYTHING and plays wingman.
As implied above, the height difference between the two of them is REAL. Turgon loves scooping his little wife up in his arms. Elenwë has never once protested about this.
My headcanon Elenwë is the daughter of a prominent Vanya, so she's very dainty and poised and lovely, but she also loves to laugh and be merry.
Elenwë thinks Turgon's social awkwardness is THE MOST ENDEARING THING and she teases him about it ENDLESSLY, but always with love.
Turgon is Bad At Talking, but he writes THE SWEETEST love letters, which is good, because for awhile they're long-distancing it from Tirion and Valimar.
Turgon is also Very Bad at Asking For What He Wants, always. But fortunately for him, Elenwë is very good at Knowing Exactly What Her Husband Wants, always. (But she will MAKE HIM use his words in order to get it, dammit! XD)
Turgon loves to plan things and sketch out plans for buildings and cities. Elenwë loves to watch him work, and will always come take his quill away from him and drag him from his desk whenever she senses he needs a break.
I think Turgon begins to hear faint whispers from Ulmo from very early on in Valinor, whenever he ventures close to the sea. He confides in Elenwë about it, she tells him it means he's destined by the Valar to do great things. To which he responds that he doesn't wish for greatness, only to have her by his side always. 😭
Turgon was THE HAPPIEST he's ever been in his life during the time Elenwë was pregnant with Idril, and he cried with happiness when his daughter was born with his wife's same golden hair.
Turgon had a lot of angst over the fact that his mother decided to stay behind in Valinor during the flight of the Noldor, and he feared that Elenwë would make a similar choice, not wishing to be parted from her kindred. He was SO RELIEVED when she told him (several times over, because it took a hot second for him to be able to slow his anxious mind down and listen) that under no circumstances would she ever willingly leave him and Idril. 😭😭😭
BONUS: Turgon built Gondolin in tribute to Elenwë. He chose white stone because his wife always wore a gown of white, and his favorite time of day is dawn, when the golden sun crests over the mountains and sparkles against the pristine courtyards. He plants her favorite flowers all over Tumladen, and he spends months carving a statue of her in a very prominent place in the city. Idril knows she can always find him staring at it whenever he's troubled or anxious about something.
ANYWAY, THOSE ARE A FEW UNFILTERED THOUGHTS. I'M GOING TO GO SCREAM INTO A PAPER BAG NOW OVER HOW MUCH I LOVE MY PRECIOUS DOOMED BABIES!
[and if you want a slightly unhinged one-shot, here's a lil Orpheus/Eurydice inspired TurgonxElenwe drabble.]

fine. here it is. nytw loredump go.
there are no gods and there is no magic. nytw is not a timeloop like the other shows are thought of. it’s one and done.
there are godlike powerful people, but they can definitely die.
many scared workers and angry surface-dwellers call hades and persephone gods because of their power and influence on the broken world.
hermes + the fates are called gods not because they’re powerful- they’re quite weak, actually, in terms of influence compared to the shit hades has his hands in; they’re just. a little wild and unpredictable. their status is more of a town urban-legend kinda thing.
hermes is a drifter just like orpheus and so are the fates, though they take part time work as hades’ loose cannons of rebellion busters + assassins. hard to control, but deadly and efficient. (mostly). pay isn’t great but hey, it’s work and status, and they get to travel to the surface and unwind when not working, so.
nor were there gods ever. the names are just that. names. whatever they mean in ancient greek is taken into account - eurydice was not named after the mythological figure, her name just means “true judgement” or whatever
names are in ancient languages as a way of retaining the past. in the impending apocalypse, europe was the first to sink - many people fled to the americas. the surface settlement where hadestown takes place are descended from greeks who settled down in appalachia. it’s been many generations since, and the only thing reminiscent of the old home are the names. it’s been so long that not even older people like hades can remember what it was.
a new dialect developed, too - english with a distinct, almost southern twang, no matter where in the country one lives. comes with a bunch of new terms. @roukabi has some great slang words that i love !! there’s also a few bits of greek and latin in there too.
in that vein, there isn’t many geological or biome differences across the country. the south cooled down and the north warmed up, leading to a large expanse of space that is all the same. the only slight differences come in elevation- but even then. it’s only just that the mountains are where all the mining communities are.
state borders have been abolished and so has any central government. it’s all just. nature on the land that used to be the usa. nobody can remember the united states either.
the only modicum of stability is hadestown and any kinda local leader or folk hero. but, considering the personality of the surface dwellers we know, mutual anarchy is often preferable.
people are generally kind, and if they aren’t, alcohol makes them kinder. drinking is very much a communal, cultural thing.
so is music. almost everyone knows how to play an instrument. it’s not uncommon to see large groups of vagabonds sitting on the plains with moonshine and a guitar in every hand.
because of the prevalence of metal and the success of the mining industry, jewelry is quite common and cheap and almost insignificant. even the poorest of people will often have silver or brass jewelry.
color is what’s most coveted. special presents would be woven bracelets in blue and red, or a bright green sweater. it’s intimate and personal to give someone a colorful gift.
they are often heirloom or coveted items, so giving someone a colorful thing is seen as very personal and intimate - shows you are willing to let go of something so important all for a person. these are gifts usually saved for lovers, close friends, and family.
because of how impractical bright standout pieces of clothing can be (dye is expensive, hard to camouflage in bright pink so whatever you’re hunting can see you) - wearing colorful clothing is a sign of rebellion. it means you are not giving into the system and making the choices it wants. you don’t care about the way it beats you. you are making your life harder in order to express yourself, be free, and wear something beautiful, and that is admirable to a culture that adores freedom and art above all else.
hadestown? doesn’t fly there.
some of these can fit broadway but i just thought. hey. nytw is the one In My Brain so it’s nytw. i do think the gods are magic in bway tho

Hi Steph! I’ve been reading ‘The Song of Achilles’ these days and I wonder if there was ever a johnlock au for Sherlock and John as Achilles and Patroclus? Thank you as always for your help!
Hey Nonny!
Oh gosh, not that I know of, though I BELIEVE that there is a greek mythology AU of Johnlock... Ah! Yes, these ones:
I Could Try by Arcwin (T, 9,583 w., 5 Ch. || Greek Mythology Crossover || Post-TRF, Orpheus and Eurydice Myth, POV John, Pining John, BAMF John, Depression, Suicidal Thoughts, Horror, Angst with Happy Ending) – John is grieving Sherlock's death post Reichenbach until one day, he sees the violin case, and something inside him tells him to pick it up. Crossover between BBC Sherlock and the Greek tragedy Orpehus and Eurydice, wherein Eurydice is killed for her beauty and taken to the Underworld. Orpheus, being the son of Apollo (the God of Music and Medicine) travels to the Underworld to convince (via playing his lyre) Hades and Persephone to let Eurydice go. Orpheus then must travel with Eurydice behind him, not looking back, until they exit to the land of the living.
Cupid's Venom by SilentAuror (E, 29,551 w., 1 Ch. || Post S4, POV Third Person Sherlock, Romance, Pining, Greek Mythology, Happy Ending) – Over drinks one night, Mike Stamford reveals to Sherlock that he always wished he could have taken credit for being Sherlock and John's Cupid. Unfamiliar with the reference, Sherlock plunges into studies of toxins and Greek mythology...
------
Second one just deals with the mythology, so it's not really an AU, LOL
That all said, anyone able to help Nonny find something closer to what they're looking for?

Hey! If you’re still looking for au ideas, I think a Hadestown AU could be really interesting
no because i have thought about this SO MUCH.
so we have the standard version of the au ok. the one that hits all the beats; jack is orpheus, the artist with an idealistic view of what the world could be (ie santa fe), and davey is eurydice, the cynic who only cares about providing for himself and his family, and forces himself to bend to what the world is to do so because in his experience, it is the only way to survive. pulitzer as hades, not necessarily EVIL but a man who played the game of capitalism to keep himself strong in a world that would've beaten him otherwise; katherine as the daughter of persephone who is constantly trying to bring life to the outside world through the power of her journalism yet must always be stifled by her father. davey sells his soul, loses his entire identity to just surviving, jack leads a revolution, specifically triple m as the fates because i find that hilarious. etc etc.
but then i have this fusion version, of sorts. davey is trying to make it as an author in new york (era unspecific because the whole point of the musical is that this story is told again and again and again) labouring at some dead end job at a cafe or something, when jack runs in, cynical and furious at new york and the world and everything. somehow, they hit it off. davey talks animatedly about the book he desperately wants to write, and jack finds himself getting a little caught up in it. he tries to laugh it off, because it's so hopeful and the world is nowhere near as kind as that - and then davey looks at him and says, 'but it could be'. and that sticks with him.
they move fast. they're the first good thing the other has found in life and they desperately want to cling to each other. within the year, they're engaged and living together. it should be perfect. it's not. their apartment is terrible, falling apart at the seams. davey's working nonstop and always sending far too much of his paycheck home to his family, so their apartment stays terrible, their clothes are always dirty, their appliances are always broken, etc, etc. when davey isn't working, he's obsessing over his novel, because it has to mean something, everything he's been through and struggled for has to mean SOMETHING, and it's like he's barely even there when jack tries to talk to him. so jack escapes into his fantasies of santa fe - it starts small, daydreaming at home so he doesn't have to focus on how frustrated he is with davey, but the more he does it, the more resentful he grows. so he starts walking around at night, tries to lose himself in his own thoughts - it's not like davey notices - but that doesn't work, either. so he stops at a cafe, exhausted and furious and a little bit dead inside, just like when he met davey for the first time - and meets this guy who says he can get jack a job labouring at a place called the refuge. the workers live there, are fed there, they've got a real community there! it'll be a little tough, of course, but all things are - it'll make good money in the long run, it'll give him a sense of purpose, and didn't jack say he wanted to go west? can't do that on a freelance author's salary.
he thinks about it. goes home. pretends to listen when davey rants about his book. sleeps in their bed together and feels more alone than he ever has.
davey wakes up the next morning - it's his first day off in months, and he wasn't quite able to get the day of their anniversary, but maybe jack won't mind an early-versary. so he gets up, makes breakfast, gets flowers... and jack doesn't come home from work. okay. maybe he's late. davey runs late all the time and jack never seems too bent out of shape about it. he'll wait a little longer. he calls him. jack doesn't answer. okay, maybe his phone died. a little worrying, but he'll be back soon. it's not like davey's great at answering his phone, and jack never seems to mind that.
and then it's midnight, and jack's still not home. he panics. paces. calls crutchie. goes insane, because that can't be possible. jack can't be gone, he wouldn't just leave, he would've said SOMETHING-
he finds the engagement ring that he could barely afford left on their bedside table. he must've just not seen it when he woke up.
fast forward a year or too. davey's doing a little better, after all the pain. he's got no tears left. he's a little numb. but he's doing better. less shifts at the cafe, less time obsessing over his book. he can relax a little, sometimes. and he's just closing up shop when jack wanders in, almost in a trance, asking if he can just have a glass of water, please, he doesn't have much.
he doesn't even recognize davey at first. but when davey says his name, he jerks up.
"... it's you." "it's me."
he takes jack home with him again. their - sorry, davey's apartment is looking a little better. the dishwasher actually works now. there's some little trinkets on the shelves. the laundry machine must be working too, because davey looks brighter, too, just like when they first met.
he tells davey about the refuge. the things he's seen. the money he's made going down the drain every time he gets injured on the job, or gets sick from the terrible living conditions. he can't even afford a place anywhere else - if he leaves, he's homeless. what choice does he have?
davey asks him to stay. tentatively, hopefully, jack says yes.
they're okay, for another year. and then mayer's illness gets worse. davey sends home more money. picks up more shifts. loses himself to this idea of what the world should be a little more every day, because surely all this shit has to be worth something, how can he say he's a good son, a good boyfriend, maybe even a good husband, if he doesn't make this work? it has to work. jack deserves it - they can have a good wedding this way, a proper wedding, and maybe buy a better apartment, one with room for jack to paint. his family deserves it - he can cover his dad's medical bills, send les to a good school, his mother won't have to work anymore... it has to work. he'll make it work.
he wakes up one day, one more year later - and jack's gone again. chasing another way to achieve his dream. and just when davey's about to scream, because how could jack walk out on him again, he sees their apartment - dull. colourless. surfaces dirty because neither of them have time to clean, the kitchen always reeking bacause the leftovers they've been trying to spread as far as they can keep going bad.
he can't blame him for leaving. promises only go so far.
some more time passes. maybe a year, maybe more. davey tries to even himself out again. the cafe he's been working at for as long as he can remember laid him off - he's in a shitty bar now. the pay's a little less, but he's making it work. as he's taking out the trash, he finds jack again, huddled in the alley, freezing cold, a little bit drunk. when he sees davey again, he cries. he's a mess.
one more time - the third? the thirtieth? who knows - davey says, "come home with me."
and they both know it won't last. they have more than enough evidence to know that they're a tragedy - that they're never going to work, no matter how hard they try.
but maybe it will work out this time.
maybe.

A fun Headcanon of Erehisu and Rivamika:
"Hadestown" Rehearsal:
Levi: Damn it!
Mikasa: What's wrong?
Levi: The lyrics for one of the songs says that I'm playing a mean old boss!
Historia: With a silver whistle and a golden scale.
Eren and everyone else, including Mikasa: An eye for an eye!
Levi: Yeah, yeah, I get it!
Hanji: Cheer up, Levi! At least you're playing one of the main characters!
Mikasa: Yeah, honey. Plus, you won't be kissing anyone. In fact, you won't be kissing anyone at all, really.
Pieck: Well, that sucks
Historia: Yeah! They're so cute together!
Levi and Mikasa both blush.
Me: Alright, everyone! Listen up!
Everyone gathers around me for instructions
Me: Okay, so I got the cast list for your understudies posted, everyone go check them out!
Everyone looks at the bulletin board to see who their understudy is
The Fates: Mina Carolina, Ino Yamanka, and Temari
Persephone: Frieda Reiss and Nanao
Hades: Madara Uchiha and Erwin Smith
Hermes: Deidara
Orpheus: Ichigo Kurosaki and Ulquiorra Cifer
Eurydice: Rukia Kuchiki and Orihime Inoue
The band: Naruto Uzumaki, Kiba, Shikamaru and others
Passengers and shades: Kenpachi, Yachiru, and others
Eren: Ha! As if this Kurosaki guy can do better than me!
Ichigo: The fuck did you say!?
Rukia: (sighing) Ichigo calm down.
Historia: You too, Eren! Plus, you have a second understudy, just like how Mikasa, Levi, and I each have two as well.
Frieda: That's right dear sister!
Orihime: I can't believe I get to be a part of one of Broadway's biggest hits!
Historia: Hello Ichigo, Rukia, and Orihime! I'm so glad you get to be in the show!
Eren: Where's Ulquiorra?
Ulquiorra comes in walking with baby Nel Tu
Ulquiorra: Sorry I'm late. I had to pick up Nel from preschool.
Byakuya Kuchiki: Same here.
Me: Hi honey!
Byakuya Kuchiki: Hello there my love!
Everyone is chatting with each other
Byakuya and I kiss
Frieda: (whispering) Hey Mikasa and Nanao! I hear that Byakuya might propose later to the director.
Nanao: Actually, it already happened
Mikasa: She said yes to him!
Frieda: When did this happen?
Yachiru: This is gonna fun, Ymir Fritz! But I'm kinda bummed that Kenny didn't get the part of Hades.
Levi: Hey kid, did you just say Kenny?
Kenpachi: Sure, she did why?
Levi: Oh, nothing! I thought that she was talking about my uncle
I hand out the scripts to each understudy
Historia glances at Eren several times
Rukia: Hey, Historia. You keep at that Eren guy
Orihime: Yeah! Do you like him or something?
Historia: What me? Him?
Historia is trying not to admit her feelings for Eren
Ichigo: That Historia girl keeps looking at you
Eren: Really? Her?
Eren is flustered as well
Ulquiorra: Just admit that you have feelings for her
Eren: What should I say to her?
Deidara: Tell her that your love for her is like a truck. Berserker!
Levi shakes his head
Levi: Don't say that, Eren
Ulquiorra: Just be yourself
Eren starts walking towards Historia
Historia: What should I say to him?!
Rukia: Just take a deep breath and relax
Orihime: Tell him you dream of him every night!
Rukia and Mikasa shake their heads
Frieda: No! That sounds creepy!
Mikasa: Just be yourself. I did that with Levi
Historia nods
Eren and Historia both bump into each other
Eren: Hey, Historia
Historia: Hey Eren
Eren and Historia: I've liked you for a really long time and I was
Historia: You have?
Eren: Yeah! Since senior year of high school
Historia: How come I never noticed you before?
Eren: Because you were dating Reiner
Historia: Oh, that's right! To be honest, I never felt anything for him. Everyone kept saying that we were high school sweethearts and that we would get married, but I didn't feel that at all
Eren: I could tell that you were faking it the whole time. Hell, you even went by a different name! It was Krista
Historia: Guilty as charged! Being Krista was exhausting.
Eren: I was so glad when you dropped that persona.
Historia: When I met you in college, I knew that you were a guy that I could trust. I remember when I first told you my real name and a massive weight was lifted off my shoulders.
Eren: I remember that, too.
Orihime: (whispering) This is so cute!
Me: I know, right? This reminds me of how Ichigo and Rukia got together!
Rukia and Mikasa: Ah shit!
Orihime: Where did you come from?!
Me: I've been here the whole damn time!
Eren: So do you...
Historia: Yes!
Eren: Really? That's great! I'll meet you after rehearsals
Historia gives Eren a kiss on the cheek, and he stands there blushing
Nel Tu: Papa. I'm sleepy.
Ulquiorra: I know, sweetie, but there's nowhere for you to rest
Orihime: He's such a wonderful father.
Historia: I saw you looking at him a few times yourself
Orihime: No I wasn't!
Me: Alright, everyone tomorrow, everyone needs to be at the top of their games!
Everyone responded to me, and they all begin to leave
Orihime looks at Levi and Mikasa, Ichigo and Rukia, and now Eren and Historia holding hands looking at each other with love
Orihime doesn't want to admit it, but she does have feelings for Ulquiorra. She loves seeing him being gentle with his daughter Nel
Orihime: Maybe I should tell him how I feel about him!
I added some Ichiruki and Ulquihime in there as well! I hope you enjoyed it, and I might have a continuation of this Headcanon. I might actually have Kenpachi as Hades if I continue this Headcanon!

PLEASE UNLEASH your hadestown demons!!!!!
unleash my hadestown demons is right this is a BEAST thank you very much ive satisfied the brain worms by dumping all my thoughts under the cut
first off. the beauty of live theatre allows for so much nuance and beauty to demonstrated so i cant even begin to cover all the things that could make me insane its so wonderful i love live theatre everyone should watch at least one live theatre production i believe it will solve at least one problem they have
the tragedy of it all!! its a sad song but we sing it anyway, in hopes that we hope that orpheus doesn't turn. but he will. bc he loves eurydice so much so he went down to the underworld to save her.
guys. the repeated, cyclical nature of everything. its an old tale from way back when and its a sad song but they sing it anyway. the point of hadestown is the HOPE of it all wait theres an article (https://www.standard.co.uk/culture/theatre/anais-mitchell-hadestown-west-end-broadway-b1134613.html) regarding mitchell's thoughts on orpheus that make me insane im gonna paste a quote here:
"If Hadestown has a moral, she says, then it’s “you have to try, you have to have hope, not because success is a given – it’s not. Orpheus fails. We heroicise” – here she breaks off to apologise that jet lag has led to her making up words – “we heroicise Orpheus not because he succeeds but because he tries, and that endeavour alone is worthwhile. How to live, and not merely survive, is to believe things could change.” ARE U KIDDING ME OURGHH
which brings me to the topics of like. climate change and capitalism that the play discusses its so good. the fact that there's no spring or fall, only summers and winter because of persephone's absences, how "is it true" is just a song abt labor protests red carnations are a symbol of love and passion yes, but in germany theyre a symbol of the working class protest. its SO important hades has just created an industrial revolution, has built a wall, has workers work forever, "why we build the wall" is soooo incredible "hey little songbird" "chant" all the songs that take place IN hadestown itself are sooo gritty so despondent in a way its insane.
theres another article that discusses sm of it AND discusses like portrayals of persephone that i REALLY like. im gonna paste it here PLEASE read it it has so much good stuff from a classics person regarding it and OURGH too good
orpheus's "to the world we dream about" but then also "the one we live in now" like oh.okay. im NORMAL….
if u noted every single lalala in hadestown it would be 6 min long. the leitmotif oh i am so normal actually.
okay im not rlly a music person i call myself music adjacent bc my two closest friends r music ppl LMAOJDHJS but like. the first time u hear eurydice say "i do" i.e what you say to seal a marriage is after she tells orpheus she signed the papers. she does not say "i do" in the entireity of wedding song, where they talk abt their nuptials. she says "i do" in informing orpheus she cant come up with him. that she chose this life (or death i guess) of her own doing. isnt that vile….
in wedding song she goes "is he always like this" and hermes responds but then in "a gathering storm" she asks the same question to no response.. idk what's there but something is there.
hermes being the narrator thats involved in the play is SOOOO delicious for my brain, the way he switches between a character involved in orpheus and eurydice getting together, invested in their relationship to a all-knowing narrator who knows the end bc he sees this every time.
there's this sense that only orpheus and eurydice do not know they r in a repeated play. which heightens their love at first sight, the "i feel like i know u but ive just met you" OHHHHH my god.
the original nytw script having orpheus say "ur early. i missed u." directly paralleling hades and persephone but in a different context because OHHHHMYGOD and not even that but the fact that mitchell took it out bc she believed it engaged the brain when the moment should only directly engage the heart. so she had the lovers say each other's name. one last time. im soooo normal
also this is bc one time i was thinking abt hadestown and mitski's remember my name played so . just that song in the context of hadestown is SOOOO bc like. like. how eurydice couldn't rmbr herself when she became a worker but orpheus went down to save her and she remembered.
when he turns back and says.
"it's you" "it's me"
^ are you fucking kidding me. the sort of disbelief the happiness the love the incoming grief im inconsolable.
when orpheus turns back, eurydice says his name w so much joy SO MUCH JOY she is not upset at him. "what was there to complain of, except that she'd been loved?" <- quote from metamorphoses
like yes we wish orpheus doesnt turn around but at the end of the day, orpheus is still the trusting guy he was in the beginning. EURYDICE on the other hand KNOWS how cruel the world is and chooses to trust orpheus anyway. but. "it's a tragedy" and doubt creeps in. part of the tragedy lies in the fact that eurydice, "all ive ever known is to hold my own" eurydice runs after him w open arms, chooses to trust him, chooses to follow the trial, and he still turns around. BECAUSE he loves her ohhhmygod im so normal
obligatory mention to the fact that orpheus could never finish the song he was working on because it was a duet. like okay lol. im fine im normal hahahahaha are u fucking kidding me.
hades and orpheus are mirrors, there r two relationships in the musical obviously and it is clear theyre mirrors of each other even w/o the original script line but like.
hades gives orpheus the test that he himself goes through every spring. hades is the villain of the story yes but he is not evil. he gives orpheus the same trial, sees that if orpheus can judge him for losing faith in his wife through the course of their relationship, let's put his romantic nature to the test. let's see if he can feel the absence of his love and keep going. and he cant. bc orpheus has never had to learn how to fend for himself. so when u take away his support system, when u take anyone's support system, how is he, how r we supposed to succeed?
just. the song "how long" encapsulates hades and persephone's relationship SO WELL. "the girl means nothing to me." "i know. but she means EVERYTHING to him" the fact that this is the first time we persephone REFUSE a drink bc shes had enough oh were SOMBER somber the way the whole song just parallels itself and every verse GOD.
the love was there. the hope was there. its a sad song. its a love song.
every single time before they leave. every time they're on stage, eurydice is in front of orpheus. he trusts that she is before him and she never doubts that he is there. it is when their positions change, him in front and her behind that he bends. it is then that doubt comes in.
those r just the like the thoughst of the music and themes itself we can talk abt the ppl and the live play now:
so first. can we talk abt this we need to talk abt for reeve carney's last show the original orpheus his last show he didnt turn back. he and eurydice lived they passed the trial. sorry that makes me so insane bc like. imagine u play orpheus. doomed to a lifetime of looking back at ur lover and your final show, u finally get to stay. oh im very normal i just love the nuances of live theatre!!! what a send off!!!!
THEN we can talk abt how eva and solea play PERFECT eurydices, full of grit and used to the cruel nature of the world. and how lola tung i feel is a DECENT singer but shes not a eurydice shes so light and soft but idk. who am i to say.
also the soundtrack is just SO incredible so is the set design there's not a single ounce of stage space that is wasted like there are so many nuances like i cant even talk abt all that there is my FAVORITE musical for SOOO many reasons ough.
yeah i think that's it. this took me MULTIPLE hours and i feel drained abt talking abt all this. WOW i love hadestown not normal amounts. i can't die before i see this live its one of my goals i just need to see it live on broadway.

STEP ONE: STRIKE AT THE WEAKNESS
Orpheus remembered his father well enough to know that he was a jealous man, he couldn’t stand even knowing someone was looking at what was his. With his mother, Calliope, being a muse was a huge problem because often the people she inspired became infatuated with her and then the King of Nightmares would show his true colors. When Y/N saw who he truly was she would leave him and everything would go back to normal.
“Hey, milady, I need a huge favor!” Orpheus kissed Y/N’s cheek when he entered their apartment.
“Oh, no.” she crossed her arms and looked disapprovingly towards him. “The last time you said that I had to bail you out of jail.”
“That’s what friends are for, right? Anyway, that’s not it. You’re cheering tonight, right?” because her family left her to fend for herself, Y/N could only stay at college with a scholarship and the cheer squad provided her that. It was cheering for the basketball team but also some cheer competition, so far they were the second best team.
“Yeah, at the game. Why?”
“I need to go to New York tonight to get something, but you know I’m a terrible driver, especially at night so...”
“So?”
“After the game could you go with me? You drive me there, I get it and we come back. Easy and fast.” Easy? Yes, but faster? If his plan worked it would be slow as a worm. New York was less than two hours from New Haven, but he could make it more just enough so she wouldn’t sleep early and that would definitely get Morpheus' attention. It would be the spark.
“Well, I kind of had plans with Daniel after.” even better, but he had to use all his cards right.
“He won’t mind you helping me just this one time. Please, Y/N! I’ve a pal that found my father’s watch and it’s the only thing I have left of him and I’m afraid that if not tonight he won’t save it for me.”
“Oh, Owen...” when Y/N hugged him he felt guilty about it, but he had to remind himself that it was for her own good. “I’m sorry. Of course I’ll help you, I’ll just text Hob to warn Daniel about tonight. You can always count on me!” his father didn’t like her enough to even learn how to use technology, she had to text his friend to get in contact with him. Yes, Orpheus was doing what was best for her...for them. Once Morpheus was out of the picture they would go back to their lives.
“I don’t even know how to thank you, really. It means so much to me that you will be by my side. You’re my family, Y/N.”
“And you’re mine, Owen.” she was his best friend and because of that strong friendship she would sacrifice anything for him.
It was strange every time something came up she had to call Hob to warn Daniel and he did the same. Sometimes it felt like she was surrounded by secrets and it was completely exhausting. After she informed Hob and asked him to pass on her message and apologize for not being able to see Daniel, also apologizing for bothering him, she went on with her pre-game routine. A long shower to relax the muscles and forget about all the troubles of college. God, she loved painting more than anything in this world, but sometimes it was just hard to sit and do it. There was also the Owen-Daniel issue, because she was pretty sure they disliked each other even if they never even met. She was too young and too broke to have so many problems.
Orpheus, as usual, didn't just wait until she was ready but also went to the game even if he hated it, he was her moral support at this time. His friend was very attractive, if he still wasn't in love with Eurydice and if she wasn't almost like a sister to him things could be different, but things were the way they were, but he couldn't understand why his father? So many others had persuaded a relationship with her, men and women, yet none would get close enough to her, it was like for Y/N anything romantic was out of the table…or so he thought.
The game was an easy win and the squad cheered amazingly well, Y/N rushed to find Owen at the parking lot. He had a Chevy Impala that was probably almost as old as them, but everytime Y/N suggested he find one less old he would say it was a classic. Surprisingly it worked as well as a new car, never once it let them down and she appreciated that a lot. Hopefully it would hold itself together on this trip.
"I brought snacks for us." he threw his keys at her and sat in the passenger space. "And some energetic drinks, it's late and you worked a lot today. So sorry for bringing you into this, I just…really need you right now." Y/N could understand him, it was too hard to be alone right now and he was her best friend in the whole world. She would be there for him always, no matter what happened.
"Don't worry about it, I'm always here for you!" soon they were already on the road, the radio loud enough so they could not only hear it but sing-along too.
Orpheus couldn't remember a time where he was as happy as this, Y/N had changed everything for him. After losing Eurydice it was like the world lost all colors, but she brought it back and he was happy again. His friends cared so much about him and because of all they lived together he owned her and their friendship this. Orpheus wished it wasn't his father who she was with or that he wasn't such a monster, maybe then he wouldn't have to do all of this, but he knew that the man who condemned a woman to Hell for simply defying him would never be good for his friend. Y/N was a free spirit, everyone wanted to be around her and be her friend and Orpheus wasn't her only male friend — but he was her only best friend. Morpheus would never allow it, he was too possessive to let anyone close to what was his.
"Please, apologize to Daniel on my behalf. I know you guys barely saw each other this week."
"I'm sure he will understand."
"Are you sure? Sometimes our friendship can be a little too much for other guys, I don't wanna hold you back or disturb your relationship."
"If he doesn't get it then that's on him. As I said before, you're my family and that's above any relationship. Someone who doesn't get it…well I can't be with that person." Y/N's former boyfriends didn't like the way she was closer to Owen, even if they treated each other like siblings, and some even accused her of cheating. The thing is that she could never be with someone that didn't trust her, because trust is as important as love when you're with someone. She loved Daniel and she trusted him, even knowing that he probably was hiding something from her. Sometimes we gotta have secrets to protect ourselves and with time they might come out, but lies are different.
Orpheus couldn't believe how well his plan was doing. Once they got there, just as he had adjusted with an acquaintance of his, Orpheus called his "pal" but unfortunately the watch was sold a few hours earlier by his roommate. Thankfully he was the son of a muse and tonight he was inspired, so almost as if he was acting on Broadway he gave a show. There were tears and stuffy nose, he barely formed a sentence right. It worried Y/N to a point where she took him to a 24 hour coffee shop to calm him down.
Many hours went by and neither noticed that the sun was coming up just like they didn't notice her phone blowing up with messages from Hob – probably because Orpheus put it on silent mode.
Many coffees and energetic drinks laters Y/N was too much awake for her own good. The journey back passed way faster than before, but as soon as they got home Y/N was too energized to sleep and for the first time in weeks she was inspired. She was sad and heartbroken for her best friend, and she just had to put it all out on a painting. Everything else would have to wait.
On the other side, Orpheus was over the moon for he knew that one thing Dream of the Endless didn't have was patience.

I was listening to Hadestown again, you know what that means! I automatically started trying to cast the characters from something else I love for the musical. This time, Borderlands 3
I think Wainwright would be fantastic as Hades. He could be menacing enough if he wanted to, he would probably have a lot of fun being the dramatic villain, and can you imagine him singing Hey Little Songbird?
My first thought for Hammerlock was that he could play Hermes really well, since Hermes is the narrator and has a kind of vibe I can definitely see Hammerlock matching
But then that leaves the problem of who would play Persephone. So, new arrangement:
Clay as Hermes, Hammerlock as Persephone
Some lyrics would have to be changed, like the entire chorus of Our Lady Of The Underground, but I’m sure that wouldn’t be too hard
No clue who would play Orpheus, Eurydice, or the Fates though..
