#song is blow the wind westerly!
Text
In which I trip over 30 seconds'-worth of incidental instrumental music, fall very very far down a mudcat research hole, and emerge with a compiled playlist an hour and a half long of every song I can find using the same tune.
In my usual magpie-manner, I've been stricken with the urge to note down every identifiable bit of folksong scattered throughout the Sharpe series (thank you, John Tams, et al.), so during my most recent re-watch I kept notes as I watched- most I knew, the few others I could reverse search by phrases of lyrics, and the only real stumbling blocks were any un-named instrumental ones since I have a terrible ear for tunes I can't attach the mnemonic of lyrics to.
[If you only care for the playlists, scroll to the ✨️ at the bottom; if you want to look at my brain under a microscope, keep reading] [7 Feb, 2023 eta: the playlist has now more than doubled in length, both in # of songs and run-time]
In Siege though, starting at about 29:15, there's a brief bit of plaintive fiddle I did recognise as being the tune used by Judy Collins and others for 'Farewell to Tarwathie'. Which led, when I came to transferring my notes to playlist-form, to searching up the name of the tune itself so I could find an instrumental rendition, with my first port-of-call being the ever-faithful mainlynorfolk index, which quoted A.L. Lloyd as calling the tune 'an old favourite, best known in connection with the song called 'Green Bushes'. Which, being Bert Lloyd, we take with a substantial grain of salt.
So off to the mainlynorfolk index entry for 'Green Bushes'; not a lot of additional info there, so thus-armed, over we go to the Fresno State Trad Ballad Index entries, and their cross-references and then...
From which, the chain looked something like this: Mainlynorfolk -> Trad Ballad Index -> Scots Language Centre -> Trad Tune Archive -> Mudcat forums(1)
And then, through a marvelous stroke of serendipity, and the sole reason you're not currently reading the dissertation-length essay I was writing in my head; I stumbled across this article which is the exact manifestation of that incipient train of thought/red-string corkboard:
Song Archeology: From "Earl Douglas' Lament" To "Farewell Angelina"; The Long And Twisted History Of An Old Tune Family by Jürgen Kloss
So I could then simply get on with the playlist-making. Thank goodness for equally pedantic people in this world doing the hard work for me. (definitely do go read Kloss's article tho)
[(1) Which is fairly well what my usual oddly-specific folk playlist forays look like, only scanning for breadth rather than depth in their case. Mainlynorfolk is excellent for finding recordings of songs; the Trad Ballad Index for figuring links between songs/tunes themselves; and Mudcat, my beloved, for decades-old forum threads on particular themes and genres. Add to those the other *mumble*-dozen sites and books in my 'Folk Music Resources' bookmarks folder, such as the VWML Roud Index, and I can get real granular in my playlist-themes.]
(incidentally, 'Wild Rover' also scans near-perfectly to the tune and vice-versa 'Tarwathie''s lyrics to 'Wild Rover', though I don't think the tunes are actually that similar; I also keep slipping into 'Sweet Betsy From Pike/Vilikens and His Dinah' whilst humming it, though the metre there is entirely different; and i could halfway believe an evolutionary relation to the classic come-all-ye tune such as 'Blow-ye-winds-westerly/Fish in the Sea')
So anyway, the upshot of this is I now have two new playlists to show for it: the intended Sharpe's Soundtrack one [here] and the subsidiary hour-and-a-half 3-hours+ tune family compilation [here] ✨️

The Little Leeches: Act One: The Land Above
The Ocean is a vast place and a place you should never question. Tales and folklore tell strange tales about what's beneath it, and one of them is a very popular one though people may call them evil creatures, overall, they are people, and more often than not, their physical appearance is combined with various fishes beneath the sea, and they are call mermaids.
🌊
"Ah, the sea," laughed King Julius, who have set sails, looking back at his sons, "Trey? Riddle? Don't you feel it? The breeze?"
"I certainly have," Trey answered, helping the sailor tie some rope, "You always told me about it."
"Y-yeah," Riddle agreed, keeping his grip on the rails, trying to keep a clean face, but it was clear that he was becoming seasick, "L-like Trey has mentioned,"
"Riddle," Trey sighs, "I told you, you didn't have to come along, especially with your seasickness. I know this is an attempt to get along with Father, but please,"
"No, Trey," Riddle sighs, "I can handle this...I can."
Julius smiles at his sons getting along.
"Boys," he called out, "how about I tell you a tale?" He asked, gathering the sailors around.
"Oh no," Riddle moaned.
🌊
Julius:
I'll tell you a tale of the bottomless blue
And it's hey to the starboard, heave-ho
Heave-ho!
Brave sailor, beware, cause a big 'uns a-brewin'
In mysterious fathoms below
Heave-ho
I'll sing you a song of the king of the sea
Sailors:
And it's hey to the starboard, heave-ho
Julius:
The ruler of all of the oceans is he
Julius and Sailors:
In mysterious fathoms below
Fathoms below, below
From whence wayward westerlies blow
Where Triton is king
And his merpeople sing
In mysterious fathoms below
🌊
"Isn't this perfection, Riddle?"
Trey helped Riddle to the seat, "Out on the open sea, surrounded by nothing but water."
"Oh, yes, it's simply...," Riddle gulped, "delightful..."
🌊
Trey:
The salt on your skin
And the wind in your hair
And the waves as they ebb, and they flow
We're miles from the shore
And guess what, I don't care!
Riddle:
As for me, I'm about to heave ho!
Julius:
Back to work!
Julius and Sailors:
I'll sing you a song of the king of the sea
An' it's hey to the starboard, heave-ho
The ruler of all of the oceans is he
In mysterious fathoms below
🌊
"King of the sea? Why, that's nautical nonsense - nothing but a superstition!" Riddle scoffed, looking down at the moment and gasping as he saw a teal fin underneath the ship.
"Why must you be so gung ho about these tales, Riddle?" Julius asked, "You seem like you know something we don't."
Riddle rolls his eyes and moaned to himself again.
🌊
Julius:
The king of the ocean gets angry
An' when he gets angry, beware I'm tellin' ya, lad, when
King Triton is mad How the waves'll buck, rock to and fro
Julius and Sailors:
Hold on, good luck, as down you go
Aa-aa-aah, a-aa-aah
A-aa-aah, a-aa-aaa-aah
🌊
Trey's eyes widen as he heard someone singing from afar, and it entranced him, and he didn't really know why but he looks around. "What is that? Do you hear something?" Trey gasped, looking at everyone on the ship, awaiting an answer.
Riddle grabbed Trey's arm, "Trey, please. Enough sea-faring! Can we please go back? Mother has said that now that you are the oldest, you should marry and take the crown,"
Trey looks back at Riddle, "That's not the life for me, Riddle, and you know that."
🌊
Aa-aa-aah, a-aa-aah
Aa-aa-ahh, a-aa-aaa-aah
🌊
"There it is again!" Trey remarked and looks back at Riddle, "Tell me you heard it this time." Riddle slowly nods, "I-I have." He clears his throat, "We ought to head back to shore.." Trey sighs and nods, "You are right, we should get going. Maybe the sea salt in the air has gotten into my head." Julius pats Trey's back, "Yeah, and we have a feast, waiting for us!" He turns to the sailors, "Turn back! Let's get back at the castle!" "Aye-aye, Captain!"
🌊
Julius and Sailors:
There's mermaids out there in the bottomless blue
An' it's hey to the starboard, heave-ho
Watch out for 'em, lad, or you'll go to your ruin
In mysterious fathoms below
🌊
Riddle looks back and saw a pair of gold and brown eyes underneath the waves, and looking around, Riddle shushes the pair and mentions them to sink, trying to keep them hidden by the many people on the ship. The eyes disappear and Riddle sighs to himself.
"Floyd, I told you not to come out when a ship approaches..." He mutters to himself.
Riddle looks back at the pirates laughing to themselves. "Look at you, Trey," Julius laughed, "Getting more braver by the birthday! And you know, The Coral moon's tonight and you know that's when the mermaids arise from the sea to, and don't quote me on this, lure sailors to their deaths."
"I don't see that happening," Riddle spoke up, "especially the luring. If merpeople do exists, why would they bother dealing with us?"
"Riddle, sweet child. Sea creatures are always aiming to harm us every chance they get," slurred a sailor, "They're the reason many were lost at sea!"
Riddle cringed at the words. He knows they weren't true, he has met one and they have been friends since. Not that the mermaid in question cared for his privacy, but they are still somewhat friends regardless, so Riddle knows firsthand Merpeople mythology as he ikes to call it.
"I'm saying we shouldn't judge them based on small-minded myths about them," Riddle clarified, "I know better than to judge someone based on their background."
"Ah, Riddle, growing up so strong-minded," laughed a sailor, drinking his beer, "such a good lad."
Riddle sighs and sits down and looks into the sea, seeing a small glimpse of teal disappearing into the sea below.
🌊
"Hmm," Killigan grunts, looking around, "Where is that godforsaken boy," he sighs to himself and swims back to his house, "Our meeting with the Ashengrottos is in a few minutes and Floyd hasn't shown up one bit."
"Maybe he's by the jellyfish bay again," Marigold laughs, "You know how he is."
"I know exactly how he is and that's why I'm annoyed." Killigan's eyes gaze to his other son, Jade, "jade, have you seen Floyd?"
"Not since this morning," Jade responded, "Do you need me to search for him?"
"Please do," Killiagn groans, "and make sure he's back before our meeting." He watched as Jade left, and rubs his temples in annoyance. "He'd better not be collecting that stupid human stuff," he grumbles.
"Killigan, Floyd may be reckless but we both know he isn't stupid," Marigold spoke, "Jade'll find him and we'll have a peaceful meeting, just as we planned."
Killigan's expression softens a little, "You're right, I should have more faith in Floyd."
Marigold grins and continues to set the table.
🌊
"Floyd!? Floyd!! Where is he..." Jade called out, swimming around but to no avail.
He has been searching for a few minutes but the search for his brother was becoming fruitless, but a sight of a sunken ship made him realize Floyd was. A few meters away, another eel was exploring an abandoned ship, bag in hand. That eel was Floyd Leech, Jade's easily amazed and easily distracted twin brother, and he was collecting. You see, Floyd was interested in humans. Humans used unusual items, such as a book and candles, but they also have legs, two long things that helped them walk, unlike his tail which makes him speedy. But he was generally interested in humans and has been collecting ever since he was 9 years old, but he never told anyone other than Jade.
"Ooo.." he murmurs, holding a 4-pointed object in his hand.
"This looks so...pointy! I'll ask Shore what this is when I see her." Floyd puts it in his bag and continues his search." And lucky me~! Jade or Azul hasn't found me so I can search whenever and however I want!" With a delighted laugh, he finally sinks to the inners of the sunken ship, looking at old paintings of people, very old people Floyd wouldn't care about, extra books, and something that he could only recall as a music box.
"Why did people need them? Was it for personal reasons? Or was it for something else?" He questioned, "Like something for their hair?"
He giggles and puts them in his bag. Where did it all start with humans? Well, it all started when he met a human boy, at the ripe age of 9, a kid named Riddle. He didn't know anything about humans or their existence until meeting the young Prince of the Kingdom on the surface, after being saved by him from a fishnet. After that day, Floyd always met up with Riddle, despite Riddle's many, many protests. Though Floyd knew Riddle didn't mind it at all, it was the exact opposite. It might as well become a small crush at that point, but Floyd couldn't think of love when it came to collecting.
"...what's it like being human?" Floyd wonders, looking up at the painting of a family in front of him."What exactly do they do up there? Goldfish always told me that humans just do what they want but..what do they do? They spend all day in the sun, feeling the sand between them...what are they called again..." he muttered, unaware of the angry eyes of a nearby octopus.
"Floyd Leech!"
The sound nearly made Floyd drop his bag of treasures in an instant till he sees who made such a noise.
"Oh. Hi Azul."
Floyd chuckles sheepishly, trying to hide his bag behind him. Azul Ashengrotto is Floyd and Jade's best friend, even though they tried to eat him years ago, eel instinct. Ever since then, they have been close with Azul being protective of them, mostly Floyd after he got caught in a fish net. Not to mention that their families had worked together for years, and today was supposed to be a special meeting between the Leeches and the Ashengrottos. Azul is very aware of the surface that Floyd was interested in but often tried to derail Floyd from his fantasy because of dangers that the younger Leech twin was oblivious to, such as fish traps and fish getting caught and eaten.
"What are you doing here exactly?" Azul asked in a cold tone, his tentacles immediately rising.
"And what's exactly in the bag of yours?" He looks behind Floyd.
"You know.... um..." Floyd started but words couldn't form out of his mouth until he grinned, "What are you doing here, Azul? Aren't you supposed to be in a boring meeting with my family?"
"I was," Azul muttered, "but I saw Jade swim by and I just knew that meant that you be here, looking for humans stuff once again. Floyd, how many times have we all told you that all of this," He looks back at the ship, "is dangerous for us? Humans are ruthless creatures, and they'll kill us if they see us."
"Oh boo hoo," Floyd mocked, "I'm sure all of that is just superstition, and not actually true and just mertales to scare us from ever going into the surface."
"My mother has been to the surface and she has told us that humans are ruthless and unforgiving towards our kind," Azul swims towards Floyd, "what makes these so exciting to you?"
"I don't know," Floyd shrugs, "but they're unique and different from anything I've seen before and I know it sounds stupid but it's just fun to do." Azul sighs to himself, "I can't understand you, Floyd,"
"Floyd!!!" Jade calls out again from a distance. "Over here, Jade!" Azul called out, ignoring Floyd's attempts to keep him quiet. Jade zoomed over and grabbed Floyd into a hug like he always does when Floyd goes missing for hours.
"There you are!" Jade sighs and looks at him, then saw his bag,"...you went collecting?" "Yep! And I found tons of new stuff, and I'm meeting Shore later about it! Wanna come?"
"Of course, you're meeting her," Azul mumbled. Jade went silent for a second. He knew he couldn't exactly say no to Floyd, however, the more Floyd has been collecting; the more worried Jade became about him.
"Floyd, "Jade started, "I'm glad that you started a personal hobby, but you need to tell me when you go exploring. Father is practicing breathing on my neck about your location, and I can't keep lying to father and mother about this."
"Oh, come on," Floyd groaned, "you two always warned me about this but look at me," He huffs, "I'm fine and not on a dinner plate," he smiles, and takes out an odd object, "these are the only things that we know about the world above."
"Floyd," Azul sighs, "We only say this because we care about you and your wellbeing, and besides, you can be very stubborn about it." Floyd frowns and folds his arms.
Suddenly, a small growl was heard in the distance, alerting all three of them. Right behind them, were glowing red eyes, glaring at Floyd. Suddenly, a shark emerges from within the shipwrecked walls, almost knawing on Floyd's tail, but all were quick to escape before the shark's nefarious bite.
"Why do you always attract sharks!?" Azul hollered.
Floyd didn't answer as he looks for an escape plan, keeping track of the shark's movements. To his luck, he saw a small curve, just enough to trap the shark, even for a small while. "Hey!" Floyd called out to the shark, angering it, "Catch me if you can!"
"Floyd," Jade gasped, "What are you doing?"
"Shark trapping!" Floyd laughs, and zooms down, ignoring the sounds of the bites and growls of the shark behind. Jade followed, "You can't just do that," Jade lectured but his frown turns into a smirk, "not without me!"
"You two are such troublemakers," Azul grumbled, joining the tweels, "Let's just hope this works, Floyd, or else..."
"It will! Just keep going straight!"
"The shark can't attack all three of us, so he has to choose one," Jade explained, "And that normally means that the mer in the middle gets to go through the hole!" Jade laughs.
"Me!?" Azul bellowed, "Oh no no-!" His cries were short-lived as he soon found himself stuck within the small hole Floyd mentioned, and the shark was coming by quickly. "Oh, just my luck,"
Floyd and Jade noticed quickly and swam back to his aid.
"Are you ok?" Jade asked, starting to pull Azul's arms.
"Noo! I am not ok!!" Azul screamed, "I'm about to be shark food if you two don't act quickly!!"
Floyd swam behind Azul and started to push as Jade pulls, "We know!!" Floyd swam back and launches himself forward, successfully pushing Azul out, causing both Azul and Jade to fall backward onto the sandy grounds beneath.
"Floyd!" Jade called, "The shark!" Floyd looks and swims past the curve, trapping the fish-hungry shark in its place. All said and done, all rested on the ground, panting and sighing in relief, but soon filled the sea with laughter.
"I can't believe that happened," Floyd laughs, "And I didn't think I could push Azul that far."
"You've gotten stronger," Jade added, trying to keep his laughter quiet.
"I can't," Azul breathed, "You two are such menaces," he then laughs happily, "I guess that's why we're best friends, huh?"
"Yep! You can't say no to us," Floyd grinned and looks up, "Shall we see Shore now? Please?"
"Well, since you two did just save me from becoming shark food," Azul sighs, "Sure, let's go but let's be quick!"
Floyd nods and quickly swims up to the surface world, and sighs as the warm sun hit his body. He looks over and sees some humans, walking on the beach, or children giggling among themselves. He goes by a nearby rock and watches from it, his heart filled with unknown happiness.
🌊
This is where I belong
Beneath the clear wide blue here
I feel completely new here in the world above
It's like my life was wrong
And somehow, now at last
I'm in
My own skin
Up here in the world above
🌊
"What does Floyd see when he's up here?" Azul asked, "Many mers have told us that this place is horrible. Why does it attract Floyd so much?"
"You must not paid attention to Floyd's grotto," Jade laughs. Floyd swims forward, ignoring the two and enjoying the sun.
🌊
There's so much light here Light and space
The sun's so bright here
Upon my face
It feels so right here
Warm as love
Life seems to be
Almost calling to me
From this strange new world above
🌊
Floyd smiles and swims over to a rock, accompanied by a seagull, a seagull who had a lot of human stuff around her, once she collected herself. "Shore!" Floyd called out, waving towards her.
Shore gasped and looks over, grabbing the telescope, looking at Floyd, "Ah! Mermaids at the port!!" She called out and takes the telescope down, and jumped as she saw Floyd right in front of her. "Oh! You swim fast!" She laughs, setting her telescope down, "And you brought friends, Jade."
"It's Floyd, Shore," Floyd corrected, setting down his bag, "And i also have found some more stuff!"
"Excellent," Shore cheered, taking one of the items from Floyd's bag, "Wow - this is special...this very very unusual.." "What? What is it?" Floyd questioned, looking at Shore with interest. "It's a dinglehopper!"
"A dinglehopper?" Azul raised an eyebrow. "Oh these babies are fantabulous. Absolutely indispensary. When it comes to dingle hoppers, I'm a regular Encyclopoodia!"
"Doubt it," Azul mumbled, only to be hushed by Floyd.
🌊
Say that you wanna have a hairdo
Like the folks who live up there do
That'll flap their wings
Flop their wigs! Flap! Awwwk!
Well you'll look absolutely dandy
If you use one of these handy
Little thingamajigs
Thingmabobs Jigs! Bobs! Awwwk!
Pick up a dinglehopper just like so
Twirl it the way I'm twirling now
🌊
Floyd took the dinglehopper and starts to use it on Azul's hair, completely ignoring Azul's protest.
"Stop it!" Azul demanded, trying to take the dinglehopper away from Floyd.
🌊
Give it a little yank and there ya go
You're what they call the dog's meow
Wonderful stuff
Squawk
That human stuff
Can't get enough...
Squawk
Of human stuff!
And we are the authority
No need for us to bluff
Because we're great at explanating
Human stuff
🌊
"Are you sure?" Azul asked, "Because I'm confused how you would know how to use these items that these humans do everyday?"
"Im on land most of the time!" Shore spoke confidently, "So of course I know about this!"
Floyd took out something else and gives it to Shore, "And what's this?"
"A snarfblatt!"
"Seriously?" Jade asked, looking at it.
"You can be serious.." Azul muttered.
🌊
Back when the world was prehistorial
People sat as still as coral
Flat upon their bumps
On their runts! Bunks! Awwwk!
There they would be, not even thinkin'
Bored to death and barely blinkin'
Way down at the dumps
On the dumps! At! On! Awwwk!
Then they invented snarfblatts, just by chance
Suddenly life was la-di-da!
Snarfblatts're what you use to make folks dance
Give it a blow, and then - voila!
🌊
Jade take a blow, causing a squeaky noise from the snarfblatt, and seaweed, shells, and sand blew out of it.
"Might need a quick clean before playing." Shore laughed.
🌊
Wonderful stuff! Awwwk!
That human stuff! If you're a buff - Awwwk!
Of human stuff!
It's marvable!
Stupendible!
Completely A-OJ!
Which sounds absurd, but take my word -
That's what the humans say!
Sensible stuff That human stuff!
None of it fluff - Not human stuff!
And heaven knows
Since we're the pros
From us, you'll get no guff
And once you've got a who's-ma-gig -
A thing-ma-what -
A watch-ma-gig -
That's all you need to bring you up to snuff!
Right up to snuff!
With proper dinglehopper groomin'
Rest assured...you'll look real human!
We know, 'cause we know
Human stuff!
🌊
"Can we please leave now?" Azul asked, "We are still late for our business meeting...or it has already ended!" Floyd shrugged it off as he looked off into the distance, at the castle in front of him. "Hm." "Floyd, you can't possibly be thinking about going over there?" Azul gasped, "That's a human castle!" Jade swims over to Floyd, "Does he live in there? Your Goldfishie?"
Floyd giggles and nods, "Yep! Goldfishie goes here! He calls himself a prince and he lives right there. And I know the perfect way to get in undetected."
With that, Floyd dives down, zooming away from Azul and Jade. Jade lets out a sigh, "What am I going to tell Father? I know I can't lie to him for long but..look at Floyd, being so happy."
"I know," Azul agreed, "But Floyd's putting himself in danger if he keeps doing this. What if he does something he'll regret?"
"Floyd's smarter than that, Azul. We both know that he can handle himself."
🌊
"Yes, yes, trust that merman as he recklessly goes to a human castle." Hummed a voice, looking through her glass ball, "but look at him, full of joy and life." The figure growled at the sight, swimming down to a sea vanity, and fixing her makeup. "But me? Oh, no no no. No one cares about poor Winfred, oh no. How she's growing old due to the stress of being banished. While her sister runs free and safe?! I don't think so."
Winifred was once an immensely powerful being, of course sharing that title with her younger sister, Veronica. Along with them and King Triton, they would protect the sea together.
But of course, Winifred got immediately cruel and greedy with her magic. She would graciously help those but now she demanded reason or compensation for her supposed charitable deeds. This eventually became a fight between her and Veronica, leaving Veronica the victor, and with King Triton's word, she was banished to the bottom of the sea, only the power of the shell kept her magic.
Though she wasn't alone.
She was blessed with a young girl named Amphitrite, a daughter she was extremely proud of and taught her everything she knows about witchcraft.
Now they plot and plan together as Mother and Daughter, causing despair to both humans and mermaids and was partially the reason many ships have sunken and skeletons lay, and it was always a pleasure, to bring evil in the world of conflict and war. It brings a grin to their faces. A new plan was raised, one that came up after Amphitrite's journey to the land above, giddy with joy and love.
"Darling! Come here!" Winifred called her daughter over, "It is almost time for them to depart, my dear." Amphitrite grinned as she swam over to the crystal bubble, looking through it.
"Excellent, Mother! Oh, you're the best for doing this for me." Amphitrite embraces her mother with a big grin.
"Anything for my beautiful daughter," Winifred giggles, "just wait until I do that spell and zoom up there!"
"Oh of course!" "Now, let's watch this merman now...what has he been up to now?"
🌊
Floyd swam over to the kingdom in front of him, finding his way underneath the wall by the castle, easily removing the bars, loosened after Floyd's many years of visiting. He grinned as he saw the bright hair of Prince Riddle.
"Goldfishie!" He cheered, causing a jolt from Riddle.
"Shush," Riddle shushed, looking around, "I don't want my parents to hear, nah, see you."
"My bad," Floyd laughs, "I got excited, and I found so much stuff while I was exploring. Like these weird...people on the wall. They don't talk but you can see them."
"Oh," Riddle listened, sitting by the water, "Those are called portraits. A painting, to be more specific.."
"Oh, I know a lot about painting, we always paint in the sea."
"Then, portraits are paintings are humans just sitting in front of a painter."
"So...do you get portraits, Goldfishie?" Floyd asked, clearly interested in Riddle's lesson.
"Well," Riddle chuckles, "As part of the Royal family, yes, I do have a portrait, mostly people of the Royal family would have portraits to keep the essence of them, even when they die."
"Oh...die?" Floyd asked, tilting his head.
"Y-yeah," Riddle stammered, "Mother told me when you die, your soul, becomes the stars above, meaning you'll live on because souls never die." Riddle points up for Floyd to see the stars that slowly form as the sun sets, and watch his eyes shine with amazement.
"Never dies?"
"What about you?" Floyd looks back and sighs to himself, "Well, mermaids don't really have a soul. We can live for over 500 years, but we don't decrease slowly. Many...just turn into seafoam when they stop breathing, to become part of the ocean, but we don't..live on."
Riddle frowns as Floyd explained his side of biology. "So, you don't have a soul?"
"Not that I heard of, no," he answered, "I don't think mermaid school actually told us."
"How about the Coral Moon?"
"Hmm? What about the moon tonight?"
"Why is it so important to you and your kind?"
"Oh, I may not be accurate on it," Floyd spoke, "for the stuff that I can remember," Floyd looks up, "the Coral moon is here for an entire week, even more depending on the year. It was called that after a mermaid princess fell in love with a human, but only to lure him to his death and in retaliation he killed her, leaving her to transform into the sea foam you see when waves approach. But I am not sure if that's even true."
"How so?" "I mean, that's the story but the whole premise is more of a...evil night for humans. We have voices that lure people to their death every time the Coral Moon's on the rise. It's not a good thing to celebrate."
"Celebrated?"
"Coral Moon is also a coming of age for young mermaids, a night of learning how to lure, and how to use their voice for bad things. Sirens,is what they are called." Riddle looks worried about the description, and Floyd's somber tone but Floyd's frown turns into a smile. "But it's a good day for me!" Floyd looks over and takes Riddle's hand, "Under the Coral Moon, I met you, Goldfishie! I met a nice human and we're friends now."
Riddle blushes a little and hides a shy smile. Floyd smiled as Riddle tried to talk about more positive topics. Not paying attention, he takes the pipe instrument out of his bag and starts to play with it, causing Riddle to jump and look back.
"Floyd!" Riddle gasped, "What are you doing with a smoking pipe? That's not healthy for you."
"I'm playing my new instrument, it's not a smoking pipe."
Floyd declared, still playing, "And it's called a snarfblatt!"
Riddle almost tends to forget how Floyd's mind works as a merman who's never been on land. He doesn't know the common things that he, as a human, uses regularly, whether it be a music box or a smoking pipe. He does explain what they are from his perspective, but he knows that Floyd never listens, even if Riddle pushes that information into his skull.
"Sorry, Goldfishie, that I scared you," Floyd muttered, putting down. Riddle started to laugh.
"It's fine, you were just having fun, and it just happen to startled me. Don't worry about it, Floyd."
Floyd smiles and continues to look deep in his bag, finding all kinds of items that he has found, with Riddle explaining what they are, watching Floyd get excited, and asking questions.
"Riddle!" Called Queen Icabeth, "It is time to set sail for Trey's birthday!"
"I should get going, Floyd, you should as well, it's getting late," Riddle said, getting up, "and be careful, ok?"
"See you soon, Goldfishie!" He cheered and dives back underwater, leaving Riddle by himself. "What am I going to do with you, Floyd?"
Riddle laughs and walks inside the castle, meeting up with his mother, Queen Icabeth. "You have that look in your eyes again, Riddle," Icabeth snarled, "and you are late. No one shall ever be late to a birthday party."
"I apologize,"
"Oh, Icabeth," Julius chuckled, "Riddle's a good boy. I don't mind he's late for a minute or two!" Trey nods in agreement, looking at a paper he held in his hands. "What are you holding?" Riddle asked, looking at Trey.
"Oh, it's nothing, Riddle," Trey chuckles, "..it's just a drawing I drew the other day. Father thought I should take it as a good luck charm."
Riddle took a peak and couldn't help but gasped. It was a hand-drawn photo of a mermaid, one with a striking similarity to Floyd, but for Riddle, it was different somehow, by a rock, looking at the moon, presumingly when both he and Trey heard random singing.
"Wow..that's amazing.." Riddle whispered, trying to hide his shock.
"I saw it only after we began to float away," Trey explained, "I can't help but be entranced by them. I mean, have you heard their voice? It was angelic.."
Riddle didn't know what to say, other than Trey was in love with a sea creature. Or he was now, who knows, but what Riddle does know is that this began to worry him. "Well, we should get going," Riddle spoke, "It is your birthday today, and we don't need to be more late than we already were." The royal family finally boarded the ship and sailed away.
🌊
Floyd and Jade quickly swam home, as they noticed how dark the sky have become. "I can't believe we missed the dinner," Jade groaned, "Father will kill us if he found out we snuck out again." "I'm sorry! I lost track of time..again." Floyd chuckled sheepishly. "Because you hang out with Goldfishie for so long," Jade teased, "What's with you two anyways?"
"Oh! It's just...I love him," Floyd admitted, "If you saw him, you would agree. He's so cute, his red hair always reminded me of a goldfish, and when he gets blushy, he looks like a goldfish more!"
"...I'm conflicted. Is it love or obsession?" Jade questioned.
"What!? I'm not obsessed with Goldfishie." Floyd huffed, "I mean, come on, Jade! He's actually pretty nice to me." "Oh really?"
"Yes!" Floyd rolls his eyes, "You don't get it, Jade. When you finally see someone that made your heart beat so intensely, that's how you know you are love."
"Never."
"What about love?"
The twins gasps as they spotted their father in front of their house, instantly glaring at them as they arrived.
"You two finally arrived," Killian hissed, "after the dinner's over! Where have you two been? Floyd, especially."
"Well, I was by that cave again." Floyd lied, "You know I always get distracted by the small fishes, and a lot more stuff.."
"So distracted that you have forgotten about this very important dinner? Floyd, this is unexceptionable," Killigan lectured, "And I bet you weren't even at that cave, but up at surface once again, even though I have told you many, many times about the dangers up there!"
"I wasn't exploring again," Floyd huffed.
"Boys!" Marigold called out, swimming over to the twins, "Where have you been!? I was worried."
"Floyd said he was at the supposed cave."
"Again? Floyd, I don't need you getting lost considering how easily distracted you are. You are lucky you don't have any scars or anything."
"..he almost got one dealing with that Angler Fish," Jade muttered.
"What!?" Marigold gasped as Floyd glared at his brother.
"Of course, he almost got hurt," Killigan groaned. "In my defense," Floyd pouted, "I was only 6 years old, and Jade saved me just in time, so no scar and no injuries."
"For now." "Dad, what's your problem?" Floyd asked, "I'm fine, I'm alive, and you always seem so.."
"Floyd, you are reckless, you always find a way to get you and Jade in trouble. You don't understand the consequences of your actions and my word, you will get yourself killed, don't you get it!?"
"Killigan, stop it!" Marigold yelled. It was too late, Floyd was already gone as if he was never there in the first place. Marigold sighed, "Jade, can you go after Floyd? Me and your father need to have a serious conversation." Jade sorrowfully nodded and swims away, leaving the parents by themselves.
"What were you thinking?!" Marigold lectured, "Floyd's only a teen and yet you treat him a damn delinquent. You don't have the right to treat him like that."
"God, Marigold, don't you see? If he continues to do what he does, he'll end up missing or killed! Look at you, my love, you lost an arm...I don't want that to happen to you."
"If I can handle myself when I'm in danger, so can Floyd. And he has Jade with him, so I know he'll be safe." Killigan sighs, ".....was I too harsh?"
"Absolutely. But let Floyd calm down for now, and then when they return, we'll have an extended conversation, ok? Especially about your attitude, Mr. Leech." Killigan nodded and holds Marigold close as they swim inside.

Little merman AU: mysterious fathoms below-!
(Aricka x Billy)
(Little Mermaid au! Aricka is a princess, Billy is a merman. The story is the same but different.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was a beautiful day in the ocean near Westerly Kingdom. Seagulls swarmed overhead, dolphins jumped to and fro, and out of the fog, a glorious ship emerged- Liberty’s Reign, owned by the fair princess, Aricka Munson. She was as beautiful as the sunrise, gentle as a whisper; and as fierce as a hurricane. She longed for adventure in open waters, to explore what might lay beyond the boundaries of her kingdom.
But more than that: she longed for someone who would adventure with her. Oh, her brothers and friends were fine company, but she wanted love. True Love. Like her mother and father shared.
She looked on the deck below, and smiled as she heard the thrumming music of the sailors and her dearest companions, walking down to join them.
“I'll tell you a tale of the bottomless blue-!” She cries; and the sailors join in,
“An' it's hey to the starboard, heave ho!
Brave sailor, beware, 'cause a big 'uns a-brewin'
Mysterious fathoms below!
Heave ho!”
Aricka’s dearest friend, Steve, a merchant by trade and a sailor by heart, walks over and joins her,
“I'll sing you a song of the king of the sea-!” And two of their closest friends- Robin, a servant in Aricka’s court; and Dori, the royal musician- join them,
“An' it's hey to the starboard, heave ho!” Eddie swings in on a rope, landing gracefully by his sister, bowing low as he takes his solo,
“The ruler of all of the oceans is he-!”
And the friends move to their respective tasks, singing as they went,
“In mysterious fathoms below!
Fathoms below, below!
From whence wayward westerlies blow!
Where Triton is king
And his merpeople sing
In mysterious fathoms below!” Aricka’s younger brother, Mike, was not accustomed to the sea life; and was currently leaned over the side, in a most uncomfortable predicament- he was seasick.
“Isn’t this perfection Mikey? Out on the open sea, surrounded by nothing but water?” Aricka asks. Trying to cheer him up.
The boy- well; hardly a boy anymore, at eighteen years her brother was well on his way to being a man- gives her a dry look. “Oh, yes, it’s simply...delightful...” before leaning back over and expelling more of the contents of his stomach.
Aricka runs to the bow of the ship, climbing up the bow-spirit and clinging to a rope as she sings out,
“The salt on your skin
And the wind in your hair
And the waves as they ebb and they flow!
We’re miles from the shore
And guess what – I don’t care!” From the starboard part of the ship, Mike grumbles,
“As for me, I’m about to heave ho!”
“Back to work!” Robin orders, all the sailors heeding her command.
Dori, Steve and Robin lead the next part; Eddie grabbing his sister’s hands as they swing around the main deck,
“I’ll sing you a song of the king of the sea
An’ it’s hey to the starboard, heave ho!
The ruler of all of the oceans is he
In mysterious fathoms below!”
Mike scoffs, “King of the sea? Why, that’s nautical nonsense – nothing but a superstition!” Robin waggles a finger, cautioning,
“The king of the ocean gets angry
An’ when he gets angry, beware!
I’m tellin’ ya, lad, when King Triton is mad
How the waves’ll buck, rock to and fro!” Dori and Steve join her,
“Hold on, good luck, as down you go!” Aricka cuts them off as she hears something- a beautiful, haunting melody, seeming to be heard only by her,
“What is that? Do you hear something?” Mike rolls his eyes,
“Sister, please. Enough sea-faring! You’ve got to get back to court – to honor our mother’s wishes and take up her crown!” Aricka and Eddie share a Look and roll their eyes.
“That’s not the life for me, Mike—There it is again!” She clings to the starboard side, leaning over as far as she could. Steve and Dori exchange a worried look.
“We ought to head back to shore, your majesty.” Steve proposes.
“Indeed, we should!” Mike agreed. Aricka scoffs,
“Not while I’m captain. Now follow that voice! To the ends of the earth if we have to!” Robin and Eddie share a grin before the former replies,
“Aye-aye, Captain!” And the sailers resume their work as the finish their song,
“There’s mermaids out there in the bottomless blue
An’ it’s hey to the starboard, heave ho!
Watch out for ‘em, lad, or you’ll go to your ruin
Mysterious fathoms below!”

The Bobbing Cork shook with claps and stomps. From the brook outside, all the Shroud was the same--no song but the birds', no dance but the winds', no life near to the wild uproar of one man sitting cross-legged on a table, beating the wood under his fists and belting words the forest had never heard in their ages.
Karoseika opened the door to his madness: booze spilling from the bar tap, luggage thrown in dangerous stacks, two dozen travelers roaring the responses to his ancient sea chants. She skipped around the wild dance of a child drunk on the atmosphere and waved to the cawing ringmaster.
L'selle's attention snapped to her. His face alighted. "Hey!"
"Hey!" screamed the audience's enthralled echo.
The concert splintered when L'selle leapt from the table. As he bounded through the chaos, the barman took reign of the crowd by pounding a bubbling mug to the counter. People surged for refills; L'selle finally emerged from them and shook Karo's hands.
He laughed as he hollered, "You sing?"
"What?"
"You sing? Don't care if well--just in front of people?"
Before she could respond, realization entered his face. He smacked his forehead, laughed, and turned in the same motion--yes, she was an outsider, but not in the same way as him. She could not know the words.
He shouted the bartender's name. As if rehearsed, the bartender pulled a slim beer bottle from the counter and lobbed it at L'selle. Confusion erupted over the flying bottle. Senseless hands stretched for it, fulms over their reach.
But Y'lantaa caught it. She sprung from the crowd ahead of L'selle, skid another yalm to land, and tossed it to him.
It barely glanced his hands afore he threw it to Karoseika.
Having no one to hot popoto the booze to, Karoseika spun the remaining ilm of liquid. At L'selle's urging, she ripped the cork free and knocked it back.
He gave a thumbs up as if that explained things, then sprinted back atop the table at the inn's front. "Okay!" he clapped for order. "Karo's my accompaniment now. Just flick an arrowhead against that jug with the beat!"
The audience's attention swayed between the two. Y'lantaa quietly took the bottle from Karoseika and set it to the floor.
"Let's box that compass. This time all you bastards're gonna shout this place down. That's the only way the wind listens to us."
He continued his rambling, outlining the next return chorus, slapping his knees in time with the next measure.
The only two as yet untouched by excitement's spell, Y'lantaa took Karoseika and strung their fingers together. She stamped the ball of her foot and her heels to different beats, leading Karoseika through them, and assured her through the jumps of the dance.
When L'selle wrangled the crowd's voices into something resembling a tune, he commanded a start to the hour's revelry.
Up jumps a crab with his crooked legs,
Saying, "You play the cribbage
and I'll stick the pegs."
Nonsense parted them from life. The warm lamps and glinting wine glasses swayed with the frolic of Y'lantaa's skirts. She and Karoseika beat their shoes into the wooden floors, feeling the song in their bodies mix with strength. The arrows on Karoseika's back went weightless. Strangers spun around them, mimicking the rolling dance they invented by the seconds. As water surged beneath the boards, the world tilted and bobbed like a ship on the Rhotano, the sweet pine seemed almost dyed with fresh tar, the journeys that brought them to this place hummed from a past life.
Singing, blow the wind westerly, let the wind blow,
By a gentle nor'wester how steady she goes.

lululawrence's September 2021 Fic List
Previous Fic Lists / Lulu’s List Podcast Masterpost
Happy 28th once again! September is nearly at an end, and to celebrate the Larry-versary (or whatever it is about Sept 28 that they seem to love so much), I'm very excited to share the fics I've read this past month with you. They were seriously some top notch fics and some of my favorite fics I've read this year. I tried not to ramble too long in this rec post, but if you are interested in hearing me go into detail about what exactly I enjoyed about these fics, you can find this month's podcast here.
As always, be sure to show your love and appreciation for all of the hard work our fandom authors have put into their fics with kudos, nice comments, and (when applicable) reblogging their fic posts!
Know a Trick or Two by @sadaveniren / SadaVeniren (44k, E, Harry/Louis, Big Bang fic, HP AU, MPreg, single mum Harry, single mum Louis, Louis is a famous quidditch player, Harry's a muggle, one night stand, inappropriate use of magic, ot5 friendship, I'm trying to figure out how to explain all of this, lmaoooo, the world-building is super cool and the characters are all amazingly done, I love the friendship and the scenes from the kids' POVs, it was just such a super cool and unique and amazing fic)
Winds Blowing Westerly by @ladyaj-13 / LadyAJ_13 (650, G, Niall/Louis, canon compliant, the night after, post-hiatus, it is so short and soft and hazy and the emotions are perfectly on point and wonderfully navigated and how the fuck did she manage to fit all of it into so few words??, i LOVE it)
I Love The Very Blood Of You by @chloehl10 / lovelarry10 (129k, E, Harry/Louis, Big Bang fic, Vampire AU, Harry is a caretaker for his sick mom, cancer tw! please keep yourself safe, blood donation services for vampires, strangers to lovers, vampire hunters, rogue vampires, forbidden love, vampire/human relationship, like honestly this is such a complex and epic plot and it keeps things moving and the characters keep developing and changing and evolving and the relationships between everyone do too and i loved the various side characters and the way it all worked so perfectly together to have so many various and different peaks when it comes to the conflicts, i would use it as an example in a lit class of the various ways you can have conflicts and peaks that all build up to a larger one and i'm rambling so i'll stop now, just know i loved it lol)
Rising to the Occasion by @ladyaj-13 / LadyAJ_13 (4k, G, OT4 friendship, canon compliant, post hiatus, Celebrity Bake-Off, this fic is just as fluffy and silly and wonderful as you would expect a canon compliant fic taking place in the bake-off tent to be, i absolutely adored it and even the end notes are *chef's kiss*)
Hold You Now by @solvetheminourdreams / solvetheminourdreams (131k, M, Harry/Louis, Big Bang fic, American Harry, British Louis, ex-friends with benefits, closeting, bestie Niall, Harry is a PR rep who used to work at the same firm as Louis, angst, flashbacks, angst with a happy ending, I don't even know how to try to summarize this fic, it had so many emotions all the way from that fizzy feeling of excitement at the beginning of something with someone to the hope of something more to the devastation when it all falls apart and the heart dropping complete pain of realizing they're marrying someone else to the hope of possibility, and every single moment of it feels real, or at least it did to me, this fic was just epically gorgeous and wonderful and wow)
So Much Love Hidden Beneath This Skin by @fallinglikethis / FallingLikeThis (10k, T, Niall/Harry, Heartbreak Weather fic fest, Song Fic, based on Put a Little Love On Me, Ex-BFFs to lovers, closeted character, homophobic and abusive family (only referenced and in the past), hurt/comfort, healing, repairing relationships, this fic is so painful and lovely, the bond between them is so genuine and wonderful and watching them be able to stitch themselves back together again was absolutely wonderful)
Compass to my Soul by @londonfoginacup / LadyLondonderry (31k, T, Harry/Louis, Big Bang fic, A/B/O dynamics, alpha Harry, alpha Liam, beta Zayn, omega Niall, omega Louis, mostly canon compliant, so I guess... canon divergent?, Louis is a part of the band but not their pack, touch depri, forced coming off of stimms, omega drop, angst with a happy ending, hurt/comfort, self confidence issues, use of alpha voice, anxiety & anxiety attacks, I'm not sure that's explicitly what they are but i want to tag it because it's like, legitimately something you should be warned about, it's written in a very visceral way, this fic is my DREAM A/B/O FIC, i waited very long for it to come around and be birthed into the world, and it was somehow even BETTER than i ever anticipated, emmu is magical)
the next bit was spanners to my plan by @ladyaj-13 / LadyAJ_13 (6k, T, Nick/Louis, canon compliant, post-hiatus, accidental sex, repeatedly, lmaooooo, banter, texting, talking out feelings, in a stilted and hilarious and very grimmy/louis way, i don't even know what to tell you other than this fic is like a prime example of why i love tomlinshaw fics so very much omg)
eucalyptus by @hershelsue / docklands (46k, E, Harry/Louis, 1D A/B/O fest fic, A/B/O dynamics, single mum Harry, florist Harry, pediatrician Louis, shifters, wolves, pregnant off a one night stand, alpha Louis, omega Harry, this fic is wonderful, the plot is so unique and cool and kept me on my toes because i literally never knew what was going to happen next, and the way it all works out is so so fun too, and the eventual smut is nice and kinky with highlights on the lactation kink and breeding kink so enjoy that too haha)

She cleared her throat before beaming. "It's kinda fast, but it's real good! I practiced a bunch."
She took a moment before she started to sing. "Come all ye young sailors and listen to me, I'll sing you a song of the fish in the sea
And it's windy weather, boys, stormy weather, boys, when the wind blows, we're all together boys, blow ye winds westerly blow ye winds, blow, jolly sou'wester, boys, steady she goes!
Up jumps the eel with his slippery tail, climbs up aloft and he reefs the topsail,
And it's windy weather, boys, stormy weather, boys, when the wind blows, we're all together, boys, blow ye winds westerly, blow ye winds blow, jolly sou'wester, boys, steady she goes!"
Star clapped as she smiled at her. "That's really cool and you did really good!"

Here’s the first bit of what I teased a while ago. It’s taking longer to write than expected. My apologies.
...and it’s windy weather, boys, stormy weather, boys.
Yancy sighed as he snuck through the docks to his chosen storytelling alley. Jameson had had to stay back on the ships to help oversee something on The Irish Queen. While disappointed, he hadn’t taken the time to get details, as he was far too caught up in the rush of getting to spread the stories of the crews to the sailors and dock-hands who were willing to listen. There was almost nothing better than seeing men hardened by the sea be drawn in and sometimes terrified of the exploits of his friends, his family. He even had a perfect song to go with today’s story. He sat down in his chosen spot, got comfortable, and began to sing.
When the winds blow, we’re all together, boys.
After a few renditions of the song, Yancy had managed to gather a group that was sizable enough for his liking. He finished the line he was on and transitioned into storytelling.
“It’s not often that youse see pirates sail in company. Usually they sail alone, doing as they please and scaring the nearby coastal towns. But when pirates do sail together, well, that’s a truly beautiful and terrifying sight.”
The pirate looked at the group in front of him. He could tell some of them were already hooked on the story. With a smirk he continued.
“The most well known and feared group of pirates on the seven seas are those that sail under the command of Commodore Darkiplier, Pirate Lord of the a Atlantic Ocean and Devil of the High Seas.” A few of the faces in the crowd lit up in recognition of the Commodore’s name. A few more showed shock that one would utter the name, let alone tell a story about him. “His ship, The Black Abyss, was fearsome enough on its own, but now it sails alongside two other powerful Pirate Lords and their ships.” The crowd mostly nodded, but a few, who looked to be younger and less weathered, widened their eyes at the thought of allied pirates. “The Sea Maiden, belonging to Captain Magnum, Pirate Lord of the Caribbean and Omen of the Storm, and The Irish Queen, captained by Captain Jackie, Pirate Lord of the North Sea and Keeper of the Beast.” The few that had been shocked to hear the name Darkiplier uttered a few words prior shuddered as Magnum and Jackie’s full titles were also woven into this story.
Yancy smirked to himself. The crowd was responding well, and he hadn’t even gotten too the meat of the story yet. He quietly sang another line of the song before continuing.
Blow ye winds westerly, Blow ye winds blow.
Jolly sou’wester, boys, steady she goes.
I’m preparation for the next bit of the story, Yancy posed a question to his audience.” How many of you’se have heard the tale of how Captain Jackie became A Pirate Lord?”

My little love, why not tell us all a story to pass the time? Or would that be too distracting?
...you know what? yeah, sure.
I could recite this one backwards so Im sure it wont distract me to much
Back before our wilds were shrinking and our elders were dug up with the roots there was and old and mighty bear that was not a bear who resided within the earth of a forest of ash trees. The bear had taken many childer from those who past through her woods and, once they’d proven themselves, allowed them shelter among the dirt and the dark alongside her. The woods were plentiful with blood and hunts and the bear was very proud of her territory, she was sure that only the best and the blessed of Ennoia should be allowed to run beneath its canopy and provided little guidance to her progeny. She deemed that if they were weak enough to die then so be it, she would not intervene.
The bear however was an avid story teller, and loved to hide lesson in swathes of metaphor and symbolism so that only those with the sharpest minds and instincts could receive her wisdom.
One night she called to her children, told them to sit in the moss and moonlight with her, that she had a tale to tell them. So, eager to please, they flocked to her, and curled around her hulking, blood-warm form, wondering what special occasion had blessed them with her attention.
She spoke like a crack of thunder, sudden, rumbling, all consuming.
“one of your brothers has perished this night-” she rasped, and like a sudden frost the clearing of wriggling bodies slowed to a halt under the weight of her words“-a danger roams our woods children, and we must fell it”
“we shall fell it for you mother” clamored the bears cubs, each desperate for her favor.
“pray you do” warned the bear “for if you do not, it will devour you” the brood shivered, and their fear fueled their eagerness for the hunt.
“tell us mother, what form does it take” they crowed in unison and her smile grew wide, long teeth, the length of a man’s forearm,  glinting with delight.
“it has the hooked claws of the cat to grip its prey, the enduring chase of the wolf to run it down, a song as pretty as the blackbird to lure you into its maw” the bear leaned in close to her brood, they pressed their ears to her lips so that she may whisper to them “and most importantly my children, the flint sharp teeth, for eating you from the inside out.”
With a whimper the childer crumbled into fearful mutterings, the bear, irked by her broods sniveling rose and returned to haven, leaving her childer unsure of what to do.
Now among the crowd there were three Gangrel of note in our tale you would do well to remember: Aife the strongest, Finnobar the swiftest and Baird the youngest. Aife was the first to rise above her brethren to speak.
she climbed a boulder to rise above the rest, hushing her sibling so that she may speak.
“my siblings! surely this beast is of the gaurou to the east!” spoke Aife.  “What other beast that is not wolf or of our blood could have such a skill in the chase!” The kin present, glad to have a direction to go in, murmured their agreement “we shall take our mighty in body and show them our strength!”
And so Aife took a pack of the strongest kindred to travel east where they found their quarry, a lupine pack resting beside the forests river. Aife rallied her party and as one they sprang to attack. As the strongest locked jaws with their leader and the two packs met each other in battle her foe spoke with a voice like tumbling rocks.
“why have you walked into our maw, little beast?”
“you have killed my brother and I shall fight with my strength to make this forest safe from you and gain the favor of our mother” spoke Aife her feet struggling to gain purchase in the river sand, slick with her siblings vitae.
“we did not kill your brother” spoke the unyielding jaws “ but we shall take the lives of your pack”
And so that night, the rest of childer waited with Finnobar and Baird on the river bank eager for news of their sisters victory. When the river ran red with vitae not unlike their own they knew with certainty they had met their end.
The gaggle threatened to fall back into their frightened whispering until another rose from the clamor, fliting to sit up high in the bow of a tree was Finnobar, the swiftest.
“though I am troubled by our sisters defeat, perhaps this is a boon, my blood, for I had suspicions that the mighty Aife was wrong from the start” Finnobar spoke, murmurs rising from the brood, they too had had their doubts. “though the lupines may have the wolfs chase, they lack the black birds song and the cats cloying claws. I say our blight takes the form of the human hunter! For what else hides sharp daggers behind disarming tricks.” Once again a chorus of agreeing voices rose into the night.
And so Finnobar took the remaining kin and they rose on racing wings against the wind to the human settlement to the west. Finnobar, being the nimble beast he was, arrived first, as his brethren were just soaring into view of the corpse of little houses. He slunk slowly around the stone visage of the church and It wasn’t long before he pounced upon a priest who smelled of more than wine and scripture.
“why have you entered our home deamon” he croaked from beneath the swifts claws, with a voice like the rasp of turning pages.
“you have killed my brother and I shall strike you from the heavens like your gods fury to make this forest safe from you and gain the favor of our mother” spoke Finnobar, feeling the mans flesh open beneath his steady pressing, watching the dark shaped of his brethren crest the horizon from the corner of his eye.
“we did not kill your brother” spoke the holy man “ but we shall take the lives of your flock”
As the words left his mouth Finnobar turned his muzzle towards a cutting sound, something flying fast through the air. He only had moments to look on in horror as flaming arrows flew from the arrow slits of the church and struck into the hearts of his just arriving siblings. As he gawked, a furious light shone out from his prey and spread his ashes upon the consecrated ground.
And so that night, as the moon sank Baird sat, alone in the bough of an ash to watch for the returning shapes of his bretherin on the horizon. When the westerly wind blew his face full of foul ashes he knew they had met their end.
Baird, no longer the youngest for he was the only, now saddened and alone finally voiced his own opinion to the trees of his mother’s forest.
“I am young and left abandoned by this hunt for monsters, what have I now but the chance at mothers favor. I am young and weak of blood so I must be strong of mind, I shall start my search where the ashes of my first fallen brother lay”.
And so Baird roamed the territory, looking where he knew kindred liked to linger, and along deer trails ripe for hunting. Eventually he came across some earth saturated with vitae and the greasy dust of final death, but this was not all, among the disintegrated corpse of his brother lay a mighty stag, dead from desperate clawmarks gouged across its front. Its antlers still shone, christened with kin blood and dusted with ashes like the catkins of a willow in spring. Within the beast’s sifted entrails Baird seemed to see some previously hidden truth, and flew into a righteous and utter rage, the first of his unlife.
It was not hard for Baird to find the great bear among her ash trees, for she rarely left her grove except to hunt. He met her unsuspecting human visage with claws and teeth, though to her thick hide the blows were merely that of hailstones falling in a strong wind.
“Insolent child! Why have you thrown yourself into my jaws so? What has made you come to take your death?” she yowled with ancient rage.
“you have killed my all brothers and sisters, I am the last. It was naught but a stag that felled my reckless, first gone sibling, he was headless in the hunt and met with its frantic antlers but you told your tale and sent us looking for monsters, and so monsters we found ” spoke Baird, spitting the words through the redness of his rage and his steadily growing fangs.
“I did not kill your brothers and sisters!” roared the bear “it was the clawing, chasing, sweet voice of their own pride that lured them to their deaths, for they were not cunning enough to head the moral of my tale”
“No!” cried the last child, barley able to speak in any tongue for much longer “we were arrogant and brash and brazen but it was your own pride that drove your actions, you want us to play your games instead of guiding us, you’d rather be some riddle maker than a teacher”
“Enough you impudent whelp! I see pride has its teeth in you as well, you weaken this line of blood” she roared, raising her mighty claws, as long as tree roots, and well edged as the finest sword. Baird, despite his anger simply gazed into her eyes.
“and because it is in your heart also, that line will run dry here” And she could take in his words his head was sloughing off his shoulders, bursting into ash like a late summer dandelion as it hit the ground.
And with that her progeny went extinct. Her last child, dust, as all things shall be.
To this day we still do not know the name of the Bear,  only that of the brave and reckless childer she neglected and toyed with. It is rumoured however, that the ash forest still grows, even in these nights, unaffected and unafflicted by the dying cries of its brethren, as their roots have been watered and dusted with the old vitae of the bears brood.

the wind brought the robin’s farewell song briskly whistling through the crabapple tree high up in the sky recycled machine parts fall in a straight line fashion picking up speed but not disintegrating the crabapple attracts scores of robins copping a buzz & chattering like blue-haired biddies at a mahjong tournament no matter how fast the wind blows westerly it can’t forever prevent the…

Skidbladnir, the Finest Ship of the Aesir
Tumblr media
Your vision fades to black, the faint sounds of your companions turning pages of their books lulling you into the trance that comes with the spell. Before your vision clears, you hear the sound of gulls crying out, the endless wash of the ocean’s waves, and the sound of a song reaches your ears as the darkness begins to recede, and you realize you’re standing on the deck of a square rigged, fat hulled trading vessel. The shanty continues unabated, the sailors not at all talented but giving it their all.
“Come all you young sailor men, listen to me I'll sing you a song of the fish in the sea
And its windy weather, boys, stormy weather, boys When the wind blows, we're all together, boys Blow ye winds westerly, blow ye winds, blow Jolly sou'wester, boys, steady she goes
Up jumps the eel with his slippery tail Climbs up aloft and reefs the topsail
And its windy weather, boys, stormy weather, boys When the wind blows, we're all together, boys Blow ye winds westerly, blow ye winds, blow Jolly sou'wester, boys, steady she goes
And then up jumps the shark with his nine rows of teeth Saying, "You eat the dough boys, and I'll eat the beef!"
And its windy weather, boys, stormy weather, boys When the wind blows, we're all together, boys Blow ye winds westerly, blow ye winds, blow Jolly sou'wester, boys, steady she goes
Up jumps the whale, the largest of all "If you want any wind, well, I'll blow ye a squall"
And its windy weather, boys, stormy weather, boys When the wind blows, we're all together, boys Blow ye winds westerly, blow ye winds, blow Jolly sou'wester, boys, steady she goes!”
The song ends to rousing, raucous laughter, and you watch as for the next several minutes the crew scrambles about their duties, the sails humming in the strong, constant breeze emanating from the south. After about a half an hour of watching the men work, a voice shouts from the top of the mast.
“Oy, Cap’n! Sails on the horizon, Sou-sou-west! White sails, with a blue trident!”
A well-dressed elven man steps forward into your view, resplendent in a blue and green trench coat that clashes awfully with an orange tricorner hat. He snaps out a retractable spyglass, and you watch as the blood drains from his angular elven features. His voice, however, remains fairly clam as he turns out to the crew.
“Everyone, you will need to move more quickly than you ever have before today. First mate Olina will relay my orders. You are to perform precisely as I instruct. Is that clear?”
The captain begins relaying his orders through a small half orc woman to his left, whose booming voice is utterly incongruous with her small frame. As you watch, the crew in less then twenty minutes runs out a new flag, unfurls an additional small sail on an attachable, smaller mast at the bow of the ship, the ship begins to plow through the waves, kicking up more and more spray. You drift over to the captain at the stern of the vessel, looking for this other ship, and just barely in your vision is a wisp of sail with a bright blue trident. It seems to be rapidly closing the distance with the current ship you’re on, growing larger as you look at it. The captain and his first mate are discussing in low voices, and you drift over to eavesdrop.
“It’s him. You know it is. And we can’t outrun him. You’re just buying time, and not much. What’s the plan here, captain?” Olina says.
“I’m thinking. Shut up and let me think,” the elf growls, rubbing his forehead with a knuckle. After a moment he raises his head.
“Tell them to grab their swords and hand crossbows. Run out the Ballistae and secure them with pitch and torches ready should we need. Get Gilberto ready with materials for his transmutation magic. Maybe we can get lucky and transform our cargo into something innocuous.”
“Done,” the half orc growls, before perfectly relaying every order the captain gave at ear splitting, profanity ridden volumes. You watch as 8 Ballistae are rolled onto each side of the ship, their bolts loaded and winched back, the actual ballistae themselves sinking into the floor slightly, immobilizing their wheels in the wooden deck below. A human man appears on deck, blinking in the sun, clad in threadbare brown and grey robes. After about a half hour of watching this flurry of activity, you turn to look for the sails behind you, but cannot make them out. A moment later, you hear the voice from the crow’s nest again.
“Cap’n! Sails aren’t there anymore! I think we lost em!”
The elf frowns, clearly unconvinced.
“Keep a close- “
WHUMP. CRACK.
You spin around at the noise, and see an incredibly strange sight. A well-dressed Halfling man in fine, what looks to be silk clothing, stands on the deck, a rakish half smile on his lips. In one hand, lazily held against his person by a leather belt, is an odd device. A wooden handle, carved with a trident, attaches to a metal frame, a cylinder with 6 small holes in it. A long thin metal tube extends in front of the cylinder, poking through the halfling’s belt. The man steps forward, revealing a cracked and splintered piece of wood behind him, before sweeping into an ostentatious bow, his green cap being swept off his head. A low but perfectly audible voice emerges, light, carefree, but brimming with a very real sense of danger that makes you try to take a step back involuntarily.
Tumblr media
“I greet you, crew and captain of the smuggling vessel known as the Black Rat. Word has reached the Lady of Geldorcraft that you have been engaging in cargo runs of a more nefarious sort, more recently. If you would not mind, as her instrument upon the high seas, may I inspect your vessel?”
The dry mouth breathing of the captain is audible. The halfling’s position hasn’t changed, but you watch as his hand slowly drifts upwards, removing the oddly shaped piece of metal and wood from his belt. As his hand begins to move, the captain steps forward, raising his hands.
“Good sir, we have only the usual cargo of spices and other herbs that we are taking to the good continental colony of Begrunsburg. While this is not strictly speaking legal by the laws of sea trade, I would ask that you humbly allow us to complete our journey safely before confiscating such cargo.”
The halfling thinks for a moment, his foot tapping against the deck of the ship. In one fluid motion he draws the device from his belt, the barrel glowing with a faint blue light as he points it at the captain.
“I think you’re going to show me the cargo. I think you’re going to show me the hidey hole you had built in this vessel downstairs between the first and second ballistae on the starboard side of the ship. And I think you’re going to explain to me why I just talked to a corpse on the bottom of the ocean two days past who swears that your crew boarded them, slaughtered them, then took their cargo and left.”
The captain’s face twitches, before he suddenly and violently turns to the side, vomiting loudly for a few seconds. The halfling rolls his eyes, his attention slackening, and he begins to turn away, opening his mouth as if to speak. The captain pops back up behind the rail suddenly, drawing a hand crossbow in one fluid, fast motion.
CRACK.
Where the captain’s head once was is a smoking crater, bits of meat and skull scattered about the ship’s stern. The halfling sighs, blowing a bit of smoke away from the barrel of his weapon, which had just produced a bright blue bolt of electricity, lancing out unbelievably quickly, leaving a scorch mark in the railing that the captain had been using. It appeared to your eyes that the halfling had been able to turn, sight, and fire before the captain even drew his weapon. The halfling eyes the rest of the crew, who are noticeably angered by his action.
“Lads, I wouldn’t do anything hasty. You know who I serve. She wouldn’t let you all within 100 miles of the sea if you were to kill one of her chosen heroes, now would she? Besides…. It looks like you’re all outnumbered now anyways.
A shadow falls over the ship, and you watch as the sailors of the pirate vessel look up, their mouths and faces going slack with fear and wonder. Hanging above you in the air is a magnificent longship, forty oars to a side, two sails, floating in the air silently. You watch as ropes begin to fly down, sailors sliding down them with practiced ease, drawing fine rapiers, cutlasses, and hand crossbows, methodically and professionally disarming the pirate vessels crew members. They outnumber the smuggler’s crew by almost two to one. After a bit, they begin bringing up gold, jewels, and other valuable cargo from below. The halfling bows to the crew of the pirate ship.
“Now then, my lads and ladies. We have taken only the cargo that you have taken first. It will be given to the families of the men and women you killed and drowned two days ago. Additionally, a charm has been placed on this vessel. It will take you to the colony you stated you were heading to, but if you try and change course, it will sink this ship. The authorities of that colony have been contacted via sending stone. Have a nice day.”
The halfling grabs a rope, scaling it hand over hand incredibly quickly. You watch as the ship begins to silently float higher into the air before the sails unfurl after a shouted word in Halfling, and it escapes into the sunlit air, disappearing behind a bank of clouds. After a moment you hear the half orc’s voice growl out.
“I fucking hate Bjorn Ironsides and that fucking Ship.”

With a bottle between his fingers, William wanders aimlessly through dark streets, his destination entirely unknown. Perhaps he doesn't need one, content to go where his feet take him for the moment as he sings old sea shanties quietly to himself, taking in the scenes around him.
“Come all you young sailor men, listen to me, I'll sing you a song of the fish in the sea;  And it's... Windy weather, boys, stormy weather, boys, When the wind blows, we're all together, boys; Blow ye winds westerly, blow ye winds, blow, Jolly sou'wester, boys, steady she goes....”
