I believe this is the only photo of Freddie I have seen when he did 'Bohemian Rhapsody' at The Royal Ballet gala in 1979. I've seen most fans saying that this is Freddie from 1984 when Queen did 'I Want To Break Free' video (the ballet segment without his moustache) but he just looked different there. source: Sotheby's

Honolulu Roast: the story of a coup
This is a crack meta, but I think I found something. I cite as inspo and incorporate by reference this coffee shop scene breakdown by @snek-eyes and response meta by @embracing-the-ineffable
Preamble: a sign featuring the daily special isn't present, then it is:
Tumblr media
I went searching for any kind of symbolic meaning and this is what I found (below the cut):
Honolulu is a Metaphor for the Bookshop
At first I suspected there was some connection between Freddie Mercury and Honolulu, since an instrumental version of Bohemian Rhapsody plays diegetically in this scene. But that didn't yield any results, so I tried "Honolulu Queen" and I got this.
Tumblr media
citation: Smithsonian
Liliʻuokalani, the last monarch of Hawaiʻi, came to power over the tiny independent islands as the result of an untraditional chain of succession. She only held power for two years, until she was ousted by a coup led by American plutocrat Sanford Dole (as in Dole pineapple). Ionlani Palace in Honolulu was the seat of power of the independent monarchy: the coup began with a warship anchoring in Honolulu Harbor (source). Subsequently the islands were annexed by the much larger, much more powerful United States.
In a statement, in exchange for a pardon for her and her supporters, she "yield[ed] to the superior force of the United States of America" under protest, pointing out that John L. Stevens, U.S. Minister to Hawaiʻi, who supported the provisional government, had already "caused United States troops to be landed at Honolulu."
A quote directly from the mouth of queen herself reads:
"Now, to avoid any collision of armed forces and perhaps loss of life, I do, under this protest, and impelled by said forces, yield my authority..."
Following the coup, Sanford Dole set himself up as the ruler of Hawai'i, until ceding authority to the United States.
Aziraphale = Liliʻuokalani
Who else do we know that could be characterized as the ruler of a tiny independent nation...
Tumblr media
...that is violently invaded by an overwhelming larger force...
Tumblr media
...and then forced to surrender to annexation to protect their loved ones...
Tumblr media
...and now their tiny independent nation is being occupied by representatives of the invading force?
Tumblr media
I mean. C'mon. It's right there.
Metaphorical Parallelism between Heaven:Hell and Federal:Corporate
But indigo, you say, wasn't it Hell that couped the bookshop and Heaven that annexed it?
Yes. Just like Dole of Dole Pineapple, a private interest, couped Hawai'i, which would later be annexed by the United States.
Public and private interest are, theoretically, at odds, but America in particular has a long and storied history of these forces colluding and working together for common (and often sinister) purpose.
We already know that Heaven and Hell in the universe of GO have significant interests in common, such as wanting to bring about the Apocalypse (even if that common interest is in having a war with each other). The parallelism is there.
Anyways. Yeah.
Honolulu Roast.

🔸December 13th, 1974, Barcelona, Spain - Queen chatting with ‘Rock'n'Roll Popular 1’ Spanish magazine redactor Bertha M. Yebra, who also is combing Freddie’s hair in the first picture, for a photoshot session with Martín Frías (known as Martin J. Louis)

Can someone please translate into English? 🙏
Hello dear anon, here's a translation of the interview. I used deepl as usual and made some changes to fit the messages Richard wanted to convey better. The interview was published on the 2nd of December, 2018.
Here's the german link again as the interview source and comparison for the german-speaking folks:
Richard Z. Kruspe presents his third album as part of the band project - Till Lindemann contributes vocal part
On November 30, Rammstein guitarist Richard Z. Kruspe released his third solo album "A Million Degrees" (Universal) as part of the band project Emigrate. Among others, Till Lindemann, Ben Kowalewicz (Billy Talent) and Cardinal Copia (Ghost) are represented with vocal contributions on it. Christiane Wohlhaupter spoke with the 51-year-old about the collaboration with the singers, his daughter and the interaction with Rammstein. They say all good things come in threes. Do you have this thought in mind for your third album as well?
I used to say that I would make three albums with Emigrate. But in the meantime I can also imagine a fourth one. Maybe in a different constellation, maybe in a completely different musical environment. I've been thinking about how it would be if I were to write a purely electronic album. Or an album with a completely different singer. As long as the world of Rammstein exists, there will probably also be the world of Emigrate. Emigrate puts me in a good balance to let off steam musically. From the age of 50, you also generally think about: Where does life still want to take me? Is there something else that could inspire me? Or just music? I think to myself, maybe there is also a completely different challenge. Creation can also be found elsewhere - perhaps in film. I'm a cineaste who watches two or three films a day. What was the last film that really excited you? So about a year ago, "Fences" with Denzel Washington. I went to the movies last week and saw "Bohemian Rhapsody" and was a little disappointed because I thought it was a Queen movie.
But then it was more like a Freddy Mercury movie ... Yes, the others came a bit too short. If I had known that from the beginning, I might have gone in with a different expectation. What's the story behind "A Million Degrees"? The basic idea comes from 2015, from the time when I was completely burned out for the first time in my life. Hence this text "A Million Degrees." This state then changed when I rewrote the album. I thought about how "A Million Degrees" could be represented visually and came up with the idea that you can also understand it geometrically with the degrees. This versatility, these "Million Degrees" - exaggerated - is what Emigrate is all about.
One of your guest vocalists on the album is Cardinal Copia from Ghost. How did this collaboration come about in the first place? The meeting came about for a completely different reason. We were looking for a producer at Rammstein. I actually wanted to ask Cardinal Copia about a producer. He then said, "I'll be in Berlin next week, let's meet." I asked him if he was interested in a collaboration, and he said he didn't do that on principle. I asked him anyway if he wanted to hear the song I was thinking for his voice. And then when he heard it, he was like, "I'm in, I'm in." He was completely influenced by the music. That's what makes it fun for me, to work with so many artists. I don't have that in my Rammstein world.
Someone who was also influenced by the music was Serj Tankian. He said about "War", the song you thought of for him, that your voice would fit much better. Will you write another song that fits his voice better?
No, I don't work that way. I write first, and then the song tells me where it wants to go. The song takes on a life of its own. It's like cooking. You have to taste it. And with the song, you have to listen very carefully. So you didn't think of Till Lindemann when you wrote "Let's Go"?
That's another story. This song was already created at the time when Till and I wanted to do something together - ages ago. The original idea of Emigrate was, Till and Richard want to do this together. The other bandmates didn't like that, so we put it on hold. But there was the idea of this song - with a different lyrical statement. I then rewrote it again, because this very, very intense time after the fall of the Wall came in mind, when we commuted between Berlin and Schwerin. That was such a wild time.
You dedicated the song "You Are So Beautiful" to your daughter Maxime. What does she think about it? She doesn't take it so seriously at seven years old - maybe that will come later. We shot a video for the song together in Los Angeles. That was a risk, of course, and there was some thought about shooting it with another child. But she did a great job. With Emigrate, I also live out the personal-emotional part. Something I don't do at all with Rammstein. How well can you reconcile rock star life and father duties?
I think the majority of artists generally struggle with themselves. And the majority of artists realize at some point that they can write better under the influence of pain. Of course, there are moments when you enter that zone as an artist. I don't think you can cut that out completely, and a child always feels that, too. My daughter is with me one week and then with her mother the next week. So I live that out in the week that she's not with me. I'm a very moody person, my mood changes sometimes by the hour. But she has such a fun character - it just melts you. I became a father for the first time at 23, and I'm a father now at 50. That's when I gained a certain maturity and experience. Taking the family on tour - we don't do that with Rammstein as a matter of principle. That would be another experience. To what extent does your musical work with Emigrate affect Rammstein? In the past, it was completely separate. Now things are merging - and I think "War" would have fit Rammstein as well. A lot of ideas that come out on Rammstein now were Emigrate ideas - although I actually make sure that Emigrate sounds different. But, of course, you can't split yourself completely. But because there are also five other strong individuals in Rammstein, it's not that noticeable.

On April 13, 1978,
Queen performed in Copenhagen, (Denmark)
Venue: Falkoner Theatre
Setlist:
We Will Rock You (slow/fast), Brighton Rock, Somebody To Love, Death On Two Legs, Killer Queen, Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy, I'm In Love With My Car, Get Down Make Love, The Millionaire Waltz, You're My Best Friend, Spread Your Wings, It's Late, Now I'm Here, Love Of My Life, '39, My Melancholy Blues, White Man, The Prophet's Song, guitar solo, The Prophet's Song (reprise), Stone Cold Crazy, Bohemian Rhapsody, Keep Yourself Alive, Tie Your Mother Down, We Will Rock You, We Are The Champions, Sheer Heart Attack, Jailhouse Rock, God Save The Queen
The entire crown lighting rig couldn't fit in the venue, so only the bottom of the crown was used at this show (and also the following night in Hamburg).
Before the medley, Freddie says, "We have a lot of music for you tonight. That's why we don't have a support. I just wish there were a bit more of you."
During the "Take me with you and love me forever" line in The Millionaire Waltz, a single person in the audience shouts "forever" at the right moment, to which Freddie responds, "That's nice."
Freddie replies to the audience's rhythmic hand-clapping after the medley. "You're the only audience that does that... did you know that?... in the world. I mean, if you all clap together, I'll have you sing together too, right? Let's what you can do in this next song. We ended up with a song called You're My Best Friend. For those of you who didn't know, it was written by John Deacon, and we'd like to do another song written by John. This is our latest single release. This is called Spread Your Wings." What follows is perhaps Freddie's best live version of the song, delivered with complete conviction. His voice is in incredible shape tonight.
He once again responds to the hand-clapping. "Do you do this for everybody? Do you do this for Led Zeppelin?" (They haven't been in Denmark since 1973, but they would return in 1979 to a few thousand clap-happy fans for warm-up dates for big their Knebworth shows). An excellent version of It's Late follows, with the perfectly executed vocal harmonies making it one of the best versions ever.
Roger drums up a storm in Now I'm Here, especially in the first verse.
Brian, before Love Of My Life: "This is a song for Sheer Heart Attack which Freddie wrote, and it was written for piano and voice but we're gonna do it with guitar and voice tonight, so we'll see how it goes." Brian had forgotten which album it was on, and it seems to become an ongoing joke between him and Freddie throughout the tour.
Brian's use of his echoplex delay unit in the last minute of White Man is nothing short of masterful.

The type of music I think Penny, Nemona, and Arven would listen to
Source : trust me bro
Penny
oh god why did i start with penny
mela got her hooked on Green Day and MCR so i think that’s a good place to start
she’s also deep into the internet, so yk, tally hall, jack stauber, lemon demon, maybe will wood?
also lofi she’s literally the lofi girl in the lofi live streams
i think she’d listen to a lot of game soundtracks and some anime openings
overall she has good taste in music
i could also see her liking kpop, i don’t listen to kpop and it’s a scary place so i’ll leave it up to ur interpretation of which groups she likes
Nemona
This is also another hard one, but i could see her jamming to 70’s and 80’s disco funk
she would VIBE to ABBA. Cannot tell me otherwise
also upbeat 2010’s pop. for nostalgia.
as for newer music, she listens to lizzo and doja. lot of women-empowering music too
i could also see her listening to rap
she’s the rapper eminem was too afraid to diss
nemona va MC of RIP rap battle when????
so speaking of in-game musicians, she’d be a huge fan of Ryme not only because she’s a gym leader but her music is amazing
Arven
Tumblr media
i see a lot of people saying arven wouldn’t really listen to music, but i disagree. in his official art from the art book you can see him humming in a lil sketch (i attached it cause i’ve barely seen anyone talk about it please can we talk about this 😭)
ive said this in a pervious headcanons, but arvens a whistle guys. there’s whistle guys, singing guys, and humming guys. arvens a whistle guy
ok so i think he’d like almost every type of music, but if favorite is classic rock
bohemian rhapsody is his favorite, he cries during the “mamaaa ooooooo” part (me too, me too)
he’s a big elton john, queen, billy joel, and david bowie fan
tho I can see him listening to almost every type of music, depends on his mood
for example, when it’s time to let out a good cry, he’s putting mitski on (the girlies that get it, get it 😔)
his favorite mitski songs are class of 2013 and townie
ok this was fun, if anyone has any other ideas if what these dumbasses would listen to let me know and i’ll add them! also might do one with team star

Thank you for the tag @merriell-allesandro-shelton!!
Twenty Questions for Fic Writers
How many works do you have on ao3?
Apparently 74! I'm not sure how that's possible but okay! Not what I was expecting. That's like twice as many as I thought.
What's your total ao3 word count?
2,178,053
What fandoms do you write for?
The works that I have posted on AO3 are for Bohemian Rhapsody Actor RPF, BoRhap/Queen, Ted Lasso, 13 Reasons Why, Teen Wolf, 6 Underground, Midsomer Murders, and Shazam. Pre-AO3, I wrote in a lot of other ones. Hypothetically, I write for Gran Turismo, but I've never finished any of those fics lol.
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
1. I'm breathing in the chemicals (Teen Wolf) 2. and you know you don't have to go (Ted Lasso) 3. Fear and Self-Loathing in Beacon Hill (Teen Wolf) 4. you're the sunflower (Ted Lasso) 5. into the blue and sunny morn' (BoRhap Actor RPF)
Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yes, absolutely! I appreciate when people comment and I like the interaction.
What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
I try not to have angsty endings! All my angst is sprinkled throughout the story (maybe more than sprinkled lol) and then they get a happy ending.
What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Since most of my fics have happy endings, I don't know what the happiest of the happy endings would be. Probably a fic in the ITBASM-universe, because I tried to make them all very happy (they deserved it).
Do you get hate on fics?
I did get a couple hateful anons on here in my day but they didn't stick around. Thankfully I've avoided much of that (knock on wood).
Do you write smut?
I do, I do. All M/M, though for my original NaNo story I'm apparently going to be attempting M/F and idk how that's gonna go lol.
Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
I've written two 6 Underground x Midsomer Murders crossovers because Ben and Gwil.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I'm aware of! I hope not.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
I'm also not sure I'm aware of any.
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I have not! I'll be honest that I really don't know how it works and I'm kind of a solitary creature in that regard. so, I don't know that it would be my vibe.
What's your all-time favorite ship?
Everrrrrr? Oh my gosh I don't know if I could pick. According to my AO3 bookmarks, apparently it's Joe/Nicky from The Old Guard but I don't think so (and for the most part I avoid that fandom these days). I don't know, ever???? I still can't decide. I'm too finicky. I will say that a ship that I will always love and I go forever without reading and then I'll be in that mood again is Eggsy/Harry from Kingsman. Like, they're the old stalwart.
What's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?
Probably those Gran Turismo fics I mentioned above.
What are your writing strengths?
I would say dialogue but I don't know if anyone would agree. I find it the most fun, so I enjoy it.
What are your writing weaknesses?
I don't know how to describe what people look like, because 99.9 of stuff I write is fanfic and readers already know what those characters look like, so that whenever I attempt anything original, I don't know how to naturally include some idea of "this person has brown eyes and is very tall." I see it done so badly sometimes and I just try to avoid that.
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I have done it before sparingly. Different languages, I know fics I've done have included French, Spanish, Dutch, German, and Arabic. For most of them, I use Google Translate. for the Arabic, I watched YouTube and tried non-Google Translate sources. for the French, some of it I knew myself and wrote it as I know it (I am not fluent in French). I would never write an entire fic in another language but I think including other languages is fun and rounds out the characters.
First fandom you wrote for?
Probably shockingly, it was Friends. A friend and I wrote it together in the fifth grade. Handwrote it, actually. We had a notebook that we passed back and forth.
Favorite fic you've written?
Overall, every ITBASM fic because it's like, my universe, my world, my characters, and it covered so much time (and space, ha). I don't know that I could pick an individual fic.

‘A Night At The Opera Tour’
John Reid's prediction of a highly successful year was proven highly credible the next evening in Cardiff. The band had still not paused from the rush up to the tour and spent most of the day relaxing and sleeping - no doubt a factor in their near recumbent profile. Also, unlike most groups, they were keeping their dissatisfaction with the show to themselves.
The band stopped off at Harlech TV on the way to see a cassette of the video for 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. The general consensus was quite good for four hours, with much laughter during the operetta. Brian finds film of the group educational - the first time he saw himself was a Mike Mansfield opus for 'Keep Yourself Alive' - "It was 'All right fellows, give it everything you've got but don't move off that spot.' It was terrible." You don't like Mansfield, eh? "Oh, I hate him - we all do... I was horrified when I saw it - I couldn't believe we looked that bad. I looked very static - seeing myself has taught me a lot about stage movement. Some of the things I do are planned for effect, but it's mostly just feeling the audience and communicating that back to them."
Arriving at the motel - several miles out of town - Freddie immediately fell asleep, John held court of a sort, joined later by Brian, while Roger went jogging, a daily event when touring. Tuning in to rock via Bill Haley and Tommy Steele, he became a drummer because he was better at it than guitar. All through school he was in bands; he only went to dental school out of "middle class conditioning, and it was a good way to stay in London without having to work". His mother thought it a bit strange when he opted for a career as a rock star, but she doesn't worry too much now.
The concert starts in much the same manner as the previous night, but there are signs that tonight is work, with posing an afterthought.
During ‘Stone Cold Crazy’ Freddie's movements explode in perfect unison with the music, the lights and surroundings go crazy, and the audience goes berserk.
Freddie asks for requests and receives a roar out of which one can vaguely make 'Liar'. Fred walks along the stage, nodding, agreeing he will do this one and that one while the kids roar on. "I'll tell you what - we'll do them all!"
(Brian twisted his ankle during ‘Liar’ unbeknownst to the audience.)
'Doing Alright' changes into a cha-cha beat, Freddie snapping his fingers, the coolest hipster in town, and then instantly drops into faster-than-light drive - the whole row next to me leaps to their feet as a man, rocking back and forth as Brian roars into a blinding solo.
Two songs later, in 'Seven Seas of Rye', the kids break - very fast - and in five seconds half the audience is a seething mass in front of the stage, climbing on each other in pyramids, sudden openings appearing as a splintering seat sends a few bodies to the floor.
(Seats seats were damaged from the fans climbing over them)
Interestingly, Freddie's strip act during ‘Big Spender’ isn't part of the show every night. On this night Freddie appeared (and remained) in his kimono, while on the previous night he emerged for the encore in his tight white shorts
Queen will probably always be remembered, because as their tour is beginning to demonstrate, they have the ability to actualise and encompass the outer limits of their sense of self-importance. Queen and their music, presentation, production - everything about them says that they are more important than any other band you've every heard, and who has there been, so far, who has objected? Certainly not the 150,000 people (plus 20,000 a day) who bought 'Bohemian Rhapsody' in the first 20 days of its release. Certainly not me.

Kerrang! - December, 1991

IT’S ONLY ROCK’N’OPERA (BUT THEY LIKE IT)
IT’S ONLY ROCK’N’OPERA (BUT THEY LIKE IT)
In memory of FREDDIE MERCURY, a double-A sided QUEEN single was released last week, featuring ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ and ‘These Are The Days Of Our Lives’. It will, barring miracles, be the 1991 Kerristmas Number One. By way of a premature celebration, PAUL ELLIOTT conducted this straw poll of memories from just some of those who will buy the single and mourn his passing...
WRITTEN BY Mercury, Bohemian Rhapsody is Freddie and Queen’s greatest hit. It was originally released in 1975 and went to Number One, where it stayed for nine weeks. Beginning and ending with Mercury alone at a piano, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ includes both operatic and Heavy Metal passages. Its reissue is a fitting tribute to one of rock’s greatest singers and showmen. Here, the Metal community remembers...
ROB HALFORD (JUDAS PRIEST)
“‘BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY’ brought Queen recognition and critical acclaim on a world level. The ability to put together so many diverse musical forms into one song was a first. The video itself was seen as a unique way in which to present music, and to many people it represented the beginning of the music video era.
“Freddie Mercury will be remembered as the consummate frontman on stage and on record. To me, he was a musical genius who constantly explored every area of contemporary popular music from rock to blues through jazz to opera and beyond Freddie and the rest of the band proved a constant source of exciting inspiration to millions of fans and fellow musicians around the world.
“I for one eagerly anticipated every new Queen release, I was never disappointed and always thrilled with the new songs. I never had the pleasure or the privilege of meeting Freddie, but like millions of Queen fans, he made me feel close to him through the music.
“I was deeply saddened when he passed away and I shall miss him greatly. Thank God his music will shine and live forever. One way or another. I love everything Queen have recorded. Their adventures into all styles of music taught me to explore every area of musical form and not remain blinkered or one-dimensional. For that and everything else Freddie and the rest of Queen have given me, I gratefully thank them.”
OZZY OSBOURNE
“‘BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY’ is a timeless classic. It will sound as good in many years to come as it does now. Queen had an individual sound that no one else could ever duplicate.”
Favourite Queen album: ‘Sheer Heart Attack’
Favourite songs: ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, ‘We Are The Champions’
BRIAN WHEAT (TESLA)
“‘BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY’ was one of the first truly long songs to be a hit. It wasn’t a contrived pop hit like so many others of that time. An uncompromising, brilliant piece. Freddie’s voice and flamboyance made him and the group unique. There will never be another voice like his. He had a passion for what he did. Queen took over where the Beatles left off in exploring new areas of music.”
Favourite Queen albums: ‘Jazz’, ‘Innuendo’, ‘Sheer Heart Attack’
Favourite songs: ‘Tie Your Mother Down’, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, ‘Somebody to Love’, ‘Headlong’, ‘Innuendo’
WOLFSBANE (All four in perfect, multi-tracked harmony)
“BESIDES BEING incredibly long, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ is the most over-the-top single ever to make Number One. Queen had a great sense of humour, even down to the band’s outrageous name. They were the one band that proved that great art can overwhelm even the most small-minded and prejudiced bigot.”
Favourite Queen album: ‘A Day At The Races’
Favourite Queen songs: ‘We Are The Champions’, ‘Now I’m Here’, ‘Is This The World We Created?’, ‘Under Pressure’… ‘and everything that wasn’t crap.’
LUKE MORLEY (THUNDER)
“AS A piece of music ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ was totally innovative(?). No one had ever fused opera with rock before and above all that, it was a (…) (…) (…) Queen were like Led Zeppelin in that they could take any form or different musical style and stamp their own authority on it, so you always knew it was Queen no matter what they did.”
Favourite Queen albums: ‘Sheer Heart Attack’
Favourite songs: ‘Killer Queen’, ‘Another One Bites The Dust’
DANNY BOWES (THUNDER)
“‘BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY’ was a landmark in rock music. There was nothing like it before nor(?) since. It’s a classic in every sense of the word. Freddie Mercury WAS(?) Queen as far as I’m concerned. People go on about Brian May’s guitar sound, but I’ve always hated it! Sorry Brian, but for me, it was always Fred! It’s a sad loss.”
Favourite Queen songs: ‘Fat Bottomed Girls’, ‘Bicycle Race’, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’
HARRY (THUNDER)
“‘BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY’ is a unique record(?), one in a million. One minute you’re in the opera and the next you’re at Hammersmith listening to Queen as a rock band. Queen had everything.”
Favourite Queen albums: ‘Sheer Heart Attack’
Favourite song: ‘Tie Your Mother Down’
SNAKE (THUNDER)
“‘BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY’ is simply a classic. Freddie Mercury was top of the league as far as frontmen go and a larger than life personality. I’ll remember Queen most for stealing the show at Live Aid.”
Favourite Queen album: ‘Sheer Heart Attack’
Favourite song: ‘Killer Queen’
GUNNAR NELSON (NELSON)
“‘BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY’ was the (…) of Freddie Mercury — a bold, ‘I don’t give a f**k what people will think’ expression that, fortunately for us materialised in a song that we can (…) in and enjoy forever.
“When you hear the song, pictures instantly form in your mind of a tat(?) lady in pigtails singing her guts out and a romantic tragedy (?) unleashing(?) before your eyes (…) (…).
“I spoke to Uncle Roy (Thomas Baker) about the recording of the song and he said it was not composed(?) and recorded(?) quickly like most Queen songs. Rather, Freddie would come into the studio over a three month period of time with completely new sections and layers to add to the basic tracks. Roy knew(?) better than to edit this creative (…) so he continued adding parts as fast as Freddie was coming up with them. That’s why the finished work was so damn long — and so f**king brilliant!”
Favourite Queen albums: ‘A Day At The Races’, ‘A Night At The Opera’, ‘News Of The World’
Favourite song: ‘Somebody To Love’
SEAN HARRIS (DIAMOND HEAD)
“I CAN still remember the first time I heard ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ on Radio One, I thought it was brilliant. Freddie Mercury was just a star. If he’d been a hairdresser he’d still have been a star. He had a great voice and was the best front man of all time.
“Queen never got the recognition they deserved. A lot more bands could do with being influenced by them.”
Favourite Queen album: ‘Greatest Hits’
Favourite song: ‘Now I’m Here’
BRIAN TATLER (DIAMOND HEAD)
“I WAS at school when ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ was released, and everybody was talking about it. I particularly liked the bit in the video when the heavy end section came in with flash bombs! I watched it every week on ‘Top Of The Pops’ Incredible single!”
Favourite Queen album: ‘Sheer Heart Attack’
Favourite song: ‘Now I’m Here’
JIZZY PEARL (LOVE/HATE)
“I WAS a big Queen fan in school and considered ‘Bohemin Rhapsody’ one of the first (…) pieces of music I’d ever heard. Freddie Mercury had a unique voice, I’ll remember Queen for their live shows.”
Favourite Queen album: ‘News Of The World’
NIGEL MOGG (QUIRE BOYS)
“THE BEST thing about ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ isthe ‘Gallileo!’s... brilliant! I’ll remember Queen for their tight trousers! They were the first band I ever saw at the Ally Pally in 1979. My mum used to work there.
“I remember seeing Freddie Mercury wearing a big cloak and playing keyboards at the soundcheck. I saw Queen before I even saw UFO!”
Favourite Quean albums: ‘Sheer Heart Attack’, ‘A Night At The Opera’
PETE WAY (UFO)
“WHEN I first heard ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ I didn’t like the opera part. Still don’t as it happens, but I really like the hard rock bit and the dynamics. It kinda reminded me of some of the stuff we were trying to do…
“I’ve been watching some of the videos lately and it’s made me realise just how good a band they were…”
Favourite Queen album: ‘Sheer Heart Attack’
Favourite song: ‘Now I’m Here’
ERIC ADAMS (MANOWAR)
“BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY was the first rock song of its kind, a technical and artistic landmark. A technical achievement by virtue of the recording technique. Queen were able to combine incredibly intricate, beautiful and powerful vocals with rock music that was equally powerful’
Favourite Queen albums: ‘Queen I’ and ‘Queen II’
CHRIS McLAUGHLIN (LOUD)
“EVEN AFTER hearing ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ hundreds of times, I will always maintain that it is a supreme work of art. Undeniable! All the members of Queen are brilliant songwriters. Freddie was probably the most magnanimous performer ever. Only Elvis is on a par with him. Lovely guy!”
Favourite Queen albums: “Everything!”
STUMPY (THE ALMIGHTY)
“‘BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY’ was the first single to have a promo video and was at the top of the charts for nine weeks over Christmas, a notoriously difficult period.
“You couldn't predict what Queen were going to do next. Great songs, very rousing live shows.”
Favourite Queen album: ‘A Day At The Races’
Favourite song: ‘I’m In Love With My Car’
SCOTT GORHAM (EX-THIN LIZZY, NOW OF 21 GUNS)
“‘BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY’ broke new ground due to its length and it still hold the interest the whole way through. The video was just the icing on the cake. God! They were breaking new ground left, right and centre.
“The first tour we did with Queen showed all of us in Lizzy just what brilliant showmanship went into rock’n’roll at the highest level. It gave us a chance to see just how an audience could react if you perfomed with them as well as to them.
“My last memory of Freddie is a good one. He invited me up to the studio as Queen were finishing their last album, not necessarily to hear it, but because he’d heard I was a bit of a ping-pong player.
“He told me that he was his university's ping-pong team captain, so we had a competition over 10 games and, yep, I was too good for him and won!”
Favourite Queen albums: ‘Sheer Heart Attack’, ‘A Night At The Opera’, ‘Innuendo’
Favourite songs: ‘March Of The Black Queen’, ‘Now I’m Here’, ‘Sprend Your Wings’
TOBY JEPSON (LITTLE ANGELS)
“‘BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY’ broke the mould. Who would have believed that a song six minutes long would go to Number One? It’s almost the perfect song, combining melody with incredible rock dynamics never tried before. It’s an amazing concept that could only have been conceived by a one-off like Freddie Mercury. It’s never been matched. “Freddie Mercury was the reason I got into rock’n’roll. I spent my childhood trying to emulate him, walking around cloaked in my dressing gown singing ‘We Are The Champions’! Queen were unique because they never compromised in their attempts to push forward the boundaries of rock — and usually did!”
‘Sheer Heart Attack’, ‘A Night At The Opera’
Favourite songs: ‘Death On Two Legs’, ‘Another One Bites The Dust’, ‘We Will Rock You’, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ “and… and… I LOVE ‘EM ALL!”

One thing that bothers me about the whole "educate yourself" thing is the implication (and sometimes outright accusations) that the person lacking knowledge on whatever subject is just willfully ignorant, and don't get me wrong those people are out there, but the average person asking "stupid questions" probably isn't refusing to educate themselves, they probably just don't know where to start. In order to educate yourself on a subject you have to know it's there to be educated about. Ya know?
My seventh grade choir teacher chose a Queen song as part of our performance one semester. That song got me interested in Queens music, so when the Bohemian Rhapsody movie came out I went and saw it, I already liked the music so why not. That got me interested in Queens history, which led me to learning about other artists they worked with, David Bowie, Mott the Hoople, and others. Which led me to glam rock and the shift from glam rock to punk rock and the early days of the queercore punk movement. All of that because my teacher wanted a bunch of 11 year olds to try and sing Somebody to Love. Had she chosen a different song that didn't catch my attention I never would have known to learn about all of those things.
(Wheres that comic about mentos in coke for the first time?)
Secondly, and perhaps more importantly, is the availability of good information.
I'm autistic, if someone wanted to learn about autism, I would never direct them to "educate themselves" on it, not without guidance or giving a starting point. Because the average person is going to google "autism" and you know what's going to come up? Autism Speaks. And ABA. And autism warrior moms, and fight for a cure, and all that bullshit. There's plenty of things that I would love to learn more about but I don't know enough to know how to identify good sources from bad sources. Especially when it comes to information about marginalized people, where so often "the victors write the history books" as the saying goes. (After all, autism speaks has all the hallmarks of being a good, reliable source if you don't know any better.)
Obviously it's not any one person's responsibility to educate another but I can't help but think about how much nicer a place the internet would be if people took the time to say "here's a good starting point if you want to learn more" instead of dismissing people as ignorant.
