I remember discussing Tintin casting choices with a friend from Germany and remarked how it was odd he often has an English accent in adaptations rather than a Belgian one, and my friend just replied "that's because Tintin gives incredibly strong English boy energy (derogatory)"
Here in the UK there's a lot of weird classism tied into accents. Today accent diversity and representation in broadcasting is actively pursued but in Tintin's time there certainly was a preferred accent to have.
imagine this exchange happens between pages 28-29 in The Crab with the Golden Claws

SCOTTISH WORDS AND PHRASES TO USE WHEN WRITING FOR SOAP MACTAVISH ☀️
Tumblr media
i know i've made a couple of these posts before, but i'm going to go for less obvious ones. this is coming from a scottish person, if you're interested. :3 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
i saw a tiktok talking about this and i was surprised that some people don't use these words... (╥﹏╥) these are just some that come to the top of my head, although i might update it later. 💌
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
bolk/boke — can be used if something is so disgusting that it makes you feel sick, or gag. “that gives me the bolk.”
minging — i love using this word... minging is disgusting, it's something that is gross. “oh, that's minging.” if someone has done something is gross. you could use it if something smells bad or unpleasant.
belther — a blether is a chat. if you're having a blether, you're having a conversation.
chinwag — i'm not sure if other countries use this, but similar to a ‘blether’, a chinwag means to chat.
scran — i don't think this is just scottish, but if you're having a scran, you're eating.
mockit — mockit means dirty. for example, if someone's shoes are mockit then they're very dirty.
piece — a piece is a sandwich. a bacon piece, a chip piece, etc.
eejit — if someone is an eejit, they're an idiot.
greeting — most people would think greeting means to greet someone, but ‘greeting’ in scottish slang is crying. if a wain is greeting, they're sobbing.
wain — a wain means a child.
dreich — dreich is gloomy, dull, depressing. “a wet, dreich morning.”
tattie — a potato is a tattie. for example, mince and tatties would be mince and potatoes.

there's this cafe near the base that soap likes to frequent. he's a regular, and he goes there everyday when he can. it's a nice, cozy cafe where he can sit back and relax, enjoying the quaint atmosphere away from sweaty soldiers running around the base. sometimes, he even brought price and ghost some coffee or tea, if they so prefer.
now, the base has a pretty great coffee machine, sure, but johnny likes to dabble on some other beverages. perhaps try some matcha latte or some hot chocolate, but if anyone asked him if he's there for the drinks, he would lie and nod at them, saying how the latte or the chocolate was the best thing he's ever tasted.
the drinks are amazing, don't get him wrong. the ingredients were high quality, and the prices were a little bit on the pricier side for a local coffee shop. but it was the cute barista that got him hooked in the first place.
you were the barista on the morning shift, and johnny would walk in at around 9am sharp if he could drop by. he'd always order whatever you recommend, being the lovestruck boy he is, and happily give them a try with your pastry of choice. and then, you'd always ask for his name, but he'd give you some funny names that would make you laugh instead. one time you asked him for his name, he'd say "pope turté the third" and you kept giggling while making his order. when you called the name of the order, it drew a laugh from everyone at the cafe, and johnny would proudly pick up his drink and pastry from you, giving you his signature smile before leaving.
it was just that, your whole friendship with him. he makes you laugh with his ridiculous names, and you'd make his drinks the way he asked you, perhaps give him a few cakes or pastries for free if you're feeling generous. both of you were too scared to go further, afraid of being too forward. but you knew that you adored him, and he adored you too.
so, the next time he comes over for a cuppa, you simply hand him a paper cup with a lid, already made fresh, together with a single croissant by the counter.
"thank ye, bonnie. hoo muckle?"
"seven quid with the pastry." you replied sweetly, a small smile on your face.
he happily paid for it with his card, handing it over to you. you processed it as he wanted, returning it with a receipt and his orders. as he bid you farewell, he took a sip of the cup, finding it to be a delicious hot chocolate, with some spices in it.
turning the cup, he sees his name, john, written on the paper cup with a marker, a heart as the "o". just below his name, a number with a "text me" was written, together with your own name.
somehow, his hot chocolate tasted sweeter than usual.

ngl I was considering reading Fourth Wing but after seeing a tiktok by a Gaelic speaker saying that the author throws in random Scottish Gaelic for the names of things because it sounds “fantasy-esque” presumably without consulting anyone who actually speaks the language so some of it doesn’t actually make any sense and the audiobook butchers the pronunciation has put me right off. Anyways here’s her caption because quite frankly some of you need to read it.

When I was around 10 my lil bro logged onto our shared Webkinz account and sold a bunch of stuff, including the signature item of my favorite one (my Webkinz husky named Snowball). I never got over it… until now.
I traded with someone on Reddit to get her signature item back last night!!! Nature is healing, finally, after 13 years!
Look at how happy she is to have her bed back!!! :3

I just want to say I love your blog- I came across it last night and completely went down the rabbit hole and completely convinced of the MS/DT love. I wanted to know what you thought of this video
https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZT8p7x9jV/
Even the mere mention of his name that is not appearing to be about Michael Sheen, David makes it about him and lights up. What do you think about how David reacts in interviews, shows etc where either David brings him up on his own or he comes up and he reacts? I see his demeanor change almost instantly. I feel that people don’t see as much of this coming from David and even though it’s not as obvious as Michael, it’s really there.
Tumblr media
Hi there! Well thank you so much for the kind words about my blog--I'm always happy to know folks like what I am doing and are enjoying my ridiculous posts. I really appreciate it!
That video you linked to is a great one, and one I have talked about previously on my blog. I'll put my gifs up here so we have a visual reference:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first thing (of course) that stood out to me was this random fan mentioning his friend, and immediately David thought of Michael. Because there are a lot of Michaels in the world, after all. Michael Caine. Michael Myers. George Michael, even. And yet David's mind went straight to Michael Sheen--his Michael--and that seems so telling.
I also have a tag on my blog for the many instances of David and Michael bringing each other up when the other isn't there, as that is also one of my favorite things. There are a lot of wonderful examples there, but I think one that is really worth checking out is a podcast David was on two years ago with fellow actor Paapa Essiedu. Paapa brought up Michael earlier in the interview, but later on it's David who brings him up, and there is such impossible fondness in his voice when he talks about him.
(I think this also ties into something I've discussed a few times on my blog, which is David feeling more comfortable opening up when doing an audio interview where we can't see him, versus a video interview where we can. A supposition that rings particularly true in the case of David's own podcast episode where he interviewed Michael in 2019.)
One of the most memorable things David said in the interview with Michael is, "You're an honest version of how I'm feeling." Five years ago, this seemed especially true because David was so much more reserved than Michael--less obvious, as you said--but in no way did that mean his feelings were less strong. What we see now in David's reactions when Michael is brought up--that shift in demeanor, that complete softness he emanates in a way he doesn't with others--is the externalization of something that was always there on the inside.
In that vein, I want to make sure your second Ask doesn't go unaddressed, as the NTAs are another vivid example of David's softness around Michael, and to date, still one of the most special nights in the fandom. I've written about a lot of my thoughts on it in detail, so I invite you to check out my #NTA Awards 2021 tag for a whole lot of analysis and discourse.
I hope this helps to answer your questions. Thanks for writing in! x

I don't mean this to come across as mean or rude by any means, I literally love your writing sm, but I was curious if you were aware that "bonnie" isn't typically used as a noun? It's like calling for your partner via "Pretty! Commere Pretty!" which doesn't sound quite right
Oh!!! I wasn't, I'd seen other authors using at as a nickname and thought it was cute. Like calling your partner beautiful as a nickname. As in "Hey there beautiful" or "how are you today beautiful". In the viking au Soap is going to call reader Vænn which also means beautiful or pretty in old Nordic. I don't see it as a noun nickname as much as an adjective nickname, reinforcing that he sees he darling as a bonnie lass/lad without the added gender on the end.
I don't know if that makes sense! Sorry if it doesn't read well for you 😅 it will probably happen again, but I'll change around nicknames with Soap.

crying and looking at simon after he says the most Manchester ass shit like "oh my god you're so British.."
imagine he's comforting you, just rubbing your back while making his stupid ass jokes, saying the most manchester thing ever known to man.
“simon, what the fuck?!” you weep, hiding your face further into the pillow, listening to his confusion and questions.
“you couldn't have said something more british, jesus christ..” he just snorts, patting your back and telling you more downright disgusting, gag worthy, terrifying, fear inducing, britsh thing to ever say.
