She’s in the kitchen with the washing-up and the laundry and the nappies and time travel feels gorgeously possible, like she could reach out and touch it.
Before Ruby runs into the TARDIS and to the Doctor, she stands in her kitchen and pieces it all together.
i found this moment from the christmas special absolutely enchanting and couldn't resist exploring it further!

“What did he mean, he went back?”
She’s got two dirty plates in one hand and an old bottle of baby formula in the other, and Ruby’s mind is with the man in the long leather coat who runs across roofs and jumps onto ladders dangling from the sky and can be in two places at once. When he was here, the little attic flat seemed tiny and massive simultaneously; his huge presence lit up the whole space but somehow made it feel all the more important.
“Where did he come from? Why was he here in the first place?” Carla asks after her as she drifts to the kitchen.
The sunlight streams in over the sink and its piles of washing-up as it always does. She leaves the dirty plates on the side. There is a giant crack running through the ceiling of their home and she doesn’t even remember it getting there, just that the world fainted around her, and then the Doctor was here again. The man who’d looked at her just now like he found something brilliant he thought he’d lost, and hugged her with such a tight fierceness he could’ve been wearing those kinetic gloves. Then ran.
“I don’t know, he sort of popped up at the right moment. And then he was gone,” Ruby says. Her speech slows. “Like…how?”
She hadn’t asked how when the goblins had taken Lulubelle, she hadn’t asked how when the Doctor learned the language of rope, she hadn’t asked how when she opened her mouth around a new tune and lyrics came flying out. There hadn’t been time, there had just been the Doctor. A man whose every word is half science, half magic, and undoubtedly true. They’d had a baby to save, and themselves, too, if they could manage it—which they did.
Now she gets to stand in her kitchen and remember time-surfing goblins eating babies in a pirate ship in the sky. The laugh bubbles out of her before she can catch it; she feels slightly like she’s inhaled helium.
“It’s been so mad I haven’t actually had time to stop and think! He said I was taken as a baby, isn’t that what he said just now? He went back.”
The world fainting around her and the Doctor resurrecting it. The man who was adopted and is alone, and is maybe, beneath the magic and in some wild way, like her. That had been coincidence, the Doctor said. The two of them together was a coincidence, an accident. But the Doctor leaping onto the ladder with her wasn’t. He chose to help her. Multiple times.
“He said he went back. What did he mean, he went back?”
Through time.
She could feel crazy but she doesn’t, she actually doesn’t. The email she got with her crappy A-Levels on wasn’t half as tangible as this. The helium feeling dissipates as raw solid potential lands in her lap, and she could hold that way she’s feeling right now in her hands. It’s within reach; he makes it viable.
“When was Houdini? Houdini was, like, 1900s, 1920s.”
On that goblin ship the Doctor had struck the music up again, he’d brought the bass back and told Ruby to sing. And somehow, completely out of place and strung between fantasy and reality, with a man who knew far more than she could comprehend, she felt like the frontwoman of a band rather than just the girl on keys.
“How could he? And then he spoke about time travellers and then he…”
She’s in the kitchen with the washing-up and the laundry and the nappies and time travel feels gorgeously possible, like she could reach out and touch it.
There hadn’t been time to ask how before, but she asks it now. How can you see London laid flat before you from above the clouds and be standing about in your kitchen mere hours later? How can the nice room in the attic flat be anything compared to all that?
How does she get more?
Without even a goodbye, just a drop of a kiss on Carla’s head and a twirl away, she sprints to the jackets hanging in a row on the wall. Distantly she can register Carla’s calling after her, “where are you going now?” Ruby doesn’t know the answer but she does know she is going to get one, and it will be spoken in the language of ropes sometime far away by big brown puppy eyes and a stunning wardrobe.
If she doesn’t find him now she’ll never find him at all, she can feel it like it’s instinct, like it’s fact. With the Doctor you’ve got to hold on tight and never let go, nevermind if it burns, or pulls, or hurts. That’s why he’s got the gloves.
But there’s a moment she has, just as she grabs her jacket; the familiar row of Carla and Cherry’s coats catches her off guard.
She’s not like this Doctor who has no one. She has a family. The final fixed-rent flat in London, a newborn to help care for, a crack in the roof to fix. A Christmas dinner table to set and a mum and grandma to pull the crackers with. She’s nineteen. Is all that worth a life she feels has yet to begin?
She’s nineteen.
Who will she be, if she lives the rest of her life not knowing?
She throws on her jacket, running clear across the threshold of her home and down the stairs and out into the blue blue sky and to the blue blue box, thinking of fantastically possible things she never could have conceived this morning.
She’ll wonder about it in the weeks to come, the extraordinarily unlikely events that led her to this newfangled life she’s managing to live. How did she come to those conclusions in the kitchen? Who trusts in time travel, and a time traveller, with such little proof?
The answer is, of course, that on Christmas Eve, Ruby learns what everyone who comes to know the Doctor learns: the Doctor is the kind of person who makes you believe.

A Chabad synagogue in Pomona, New York, burned to the ground on April 17th, along with its three Torah scrolls.
Torah scrolls are hand-written, hand-made, and kept in elaborately decorated cases or wrappings.
Many of them have long histories; my synagogue has two, I think, that were smuggled out of villages being destroyed in pogroms or in Nazi attacks. One of them is the only remaining piece of that village on earth.
Sometimes, the Torah scroll doesn't even belong to the synagogue, but is on loan from a place like the Memorial Scrolls Trust:
There's an entire Jewish holiday just for taking them out and dancing with them: Simchat Torah, "The Joy of Torah."
In fact, that was the holiday on which Hamas's invasion took place.

So it's a particular tragedy when a Torah is destroyed.
Chabad itself has a page about what goes into making just one Torah scroll:
"An authentic Torah scroll is a mind-boggling masterpiece of labor and skill. Comprising between 62 and 84 sheets of parchment -- cured, tanned, scraped and prepared according to exacting Torah law specifications -- and containing exactly 304,805 letters, the resulting handwritten scroll takes many months to complete.
"An expert pious scribe carefully inks each letter with a feather quill, under the intricate calligraphic guidelines of Ktav Ashurit (Ashurite Script). The sheets of parchment are then sewn together with sinews to form one long scroll. While most Torah scrolls stand around two feet in height and weigh 20-25 pounds, some are huge and quite heavy, while others are doll-sized and lightweight."
I learned all of this on Tumblr.
Once upon time, in people's "punch Nazis" days, I would've been able to find some mention on Tumblr of this synagogue burning.
There is none, so I'm posting about it.
And I'm going to quote Daniel Weiner, Rabbi of Temple de Hirsch Sinai in Bellevue, Washington, when his own synagogue was vandalized last November:
"It’s horrific and heartbreaking.... [Taking out your feelings about] what's going on in the Middle East by defacing a sacred space of a synagogue -- that’s the very definition of antisemitism."
I'm also posting about the Kehillat Shaarei Torah Synagogue in Toronto, whose windows were broken on Friday, April 19th, by someone who also tried to break the front door down.
And the April 15 graffiti outside a Bangor, Maine synagogue that said, "Nazi Israel 30K murdered," next to a crossed-out Star of David. The same synagogue faced pro-Hamas flyers plastered around it in November.
I was going to include all the synagogues vandalized over the past six months. But there are way too many. Several every week. Lots are swastikas.
I'll go back to just doing attacks on and near synagogues.
Someone has to talk about the 1-year-old who was stabbed outside Temple Beth Zion-Beth Israel (BZBI) synagogue, in Philadelphia, on April 13th.
The foiled terrorist attack on a Moscow synagogue on April 11th.
The man who, on April 9th, screamed at the rabbi at Moldova's Great Synagogue, "What are you doing here? How come no one has finished you off for everything you are doing to the Palestinians?" Just one week after people had vandalized a Holocaust memorial in nearby Soroka, and sprayed "Free Palestine" on it.
The Oldenburg, Germany synagogue that was firebombed on April 5th.
The Florida Las Olas Chabad Jewish Center, which on March 16 burned, but not to the ground. The Torah scrolls were safe, and no one was hurt, but the back of the building was severely damaged.
The planned-but-thwarted-on-March-7th ISIS massacre in a Moscow synagogue.
The stabbing of an Orthodox Jew in Switzerland on March 5th. (He was badly injured, but expected to survive.)
A man leaving a synagogue in Paris was beaten on March 3rd.
People set the courtyard of a synagogue in Sfax, Tunisia on fire on February 27th. Firefighters managed to put the fire out before it consumed the inside of the building.
The synagogue is no longer used; there are no Jews left in its area, and fewer than 1,000 Jews left in Tunisia overall.
(Thousands of Tunisian Jews were sent to work camps during the Holocaust. Antisemitism across the Middle East continued to increase rapidly for decades. By the 1970s, 90% of Tunisian Jews had fled to France or Israel.)
On February 18, an Orthodox Jew leaving Synagogue of Inverrary-Chabad in Lauderhill, Florida, was beaten by an attacker yelling racial slurs.
Someone deliberately chose International Holocaust Remembrance Day, January 27, to smash all the windows in the front of Sgoolai Israel Synagogue in downtown Fredericton, New Brunswick.
On December 29, Turkey arrested 32 people linked to ISIS who were planning attacks on synagogues and churches.
On December 17, a man drove a U-Haul truck up onto the sidewalk between a barrier and the front door of the Kesher Israel Congregation in Washington D.C., got out, and started yelling "Gas the Jews." He also sprayed a foul-smelling substance on two people leaving the synagogue.
December 17 also saw 400 synagogues across the United States receive bomb threats.
On December 11, a man attacked an elderly couple on their way into a synagogue in Los Angeles, screaming, "Give me your earrings, Jew!!" and beating one of them bloody with a belt. (Happily, he chased the guy down the street, and caught him when his pants fell down.)
On December 10, a 16-year-old was arrested in Vienna for planning an attack on a synagogue.
On December 8, on the first night of Hanukkah, 15 synagogues in New York State received bomb threats. And someone screamed, "Free Palestine," and fired shots outside of Temple Israel in Albany, NY. Which has a preschool that was in session.
Meanwhile, the five Jews left in Egypt were canceling public Hanukkah candle-lighting at their synagogue out of fear of reprisals. Particularly after two Israelis in Alexandria had been gunned down by terrorists on October 8. (While Israel was still fighting Hamas in Israel.)
On November 15, a terrorist group set the only synagogue in Armenia on fire.
Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia (ASALA) has a history of working with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP).
(PFLP is part of Hamas's network of groups. Samidoun is their nonprofit arm - which is why Germany banned Samidoun last year, although it's still active in many other countries.
PFLP is also actively supported by the Palestinian Youth Movement (PYM), a diaspora nonprofit group, and Within Our Lifetime (WOL), an SJP spinoff in NYC.)
On November 11, halfway through Shabbat services, police asked Central Shul in Melbourne, Australia to evacuate "as a precaution" due to a "pro-Palestinian" protest that had chosen the neighboring park as its gathering place. Australia has seen some very outspoken antisemitism at protests, including the march shortly after October 7 that chanted "Gas the Jews."
Also on November 11, protesters targeted a synagogue along a march route. They sat in their cars, spraying green smoke and shouting at people leaving the synagogue. The march itself featured a record number of horrifying signs and chants.
On November 7th, Congregation Beth Tikvah in Montreal was firebombed, and the back door of the Jewish organization across the street (Federation CJA) was set on fire.
On November 4, protesters chanted "Bomb Israel," and burned an Israeli flag outside the only synagogue in Malmo, Sweden.
During October, there were 501 antisemitic acts under investigation in France in just three weeks, including groups gathering in front of synagogues shouting threats, and graffiti such as the words “killing Jews is a duty” sprayed outside a stadium.
On October 18, people firebombed a synagogue in Berlin after homes all over the neighborhood were graffitied with stars of David.
And also on October 18, hundreds of "pro-Palestine" rioters attacked the Or Zaruah Synagogue, in the Spanish enclave of Melilla in North Africa, while worshippers were inside.
Based on the video, they seem to have blocked the synagogue entrance completely, while screaming "Murderous Israel" and waving Palestinian flags. (Melilla is an autonomous zone belonging to Spain. It borders Morocco.)
On October 17, during pro-Palestinian protests, hundreds of rioters set fire to Al Hammah synagogue, an abandoned house of prayer in central Tunisia. They hammered down the building’s walls and raised a Palestinian flag on the building. Police did not intervene.
The Facebook page "Tunigate", which has around 88 thousand followers, published a video of the assault. So did "Radio Bousalem”, with 83 thousand users. The vast majority of comments on these videos welcome these acts. The building was severely damaged and almost completely razed to the ground.
On October 15, bomb threats were sent to many East Coast synagogues. Attleboro synagogue Congregation Agudas-Achim received one of the emails, which read, "The bombs will blow up in a few hours. A lot of people will die. You all deserve to die."
On October 8 -- again, while Hamas was still in Israel -- Madrid’s main synagogue was defaced with graffiti that read “Free Palestine” next to a crossed-out Star of David.
And on October 7, an assailant in Rockland, NY fired a BB gun at two women entering a synagogue. Later in the month, a banner at the Stephen Wise Free Synagogue in the area was vandalized with the words, “Fuckin kikes."

1990s Breakbeat Playlist
Alright, updating this 90s breakbeat playlist this week with a total fuckin' banger from 1997 that I originally discovered on a terrific DJ mix by France's Dimitri From Paris called Monsieur Dimitri's De-Luxe House of Funk, which was released as part of UK electronic music bible Mixmag magazine's Mixmag Live series back in '97. That mix itself, which is one of my favorite mixes of all time, is more in a nu-disco/garage house vein, but the one breakbeat tune it does have is phenomenal, and thankfully, it's also on Spotify 🤘.
The "Sun Barrio Break Mix" of Tokyo musician Takada's "Ola-Le," that was done by London's own legendary Ashley Beedle, is a beautifully layered, over seven-minute, sweat-inducing workout, which includes a sweet and jaunty Latin keyboard riff as its crowning melody, and then delivers a super satisfying electric guitar solo on the back half after the breakdown too 😌. And get this, folks: it only has ~8,200 plays on Spotify! Way too low!
Takada - "Ola-Le (Ashley Beedle's Sun Barrio Break Mix)"
Now, I added that one to the YouTube version of this playlist as well, but this week's update comes with another new track for that YouTube playlist too, which can't be found on Spotify. I first discovered it on a comp that was put out by the legendary German label, Harthouse, which was co-founded-and-run by trance pioneer Sven Väth. In its early days, Harthouse was primarily a trance and hard trance outfit, but in their final phase, they had broadened their horizons, and in 1996, they released a showcase of some North American electronic artists who hailed from the west coast, spanning from the Los Angeles area all the way up to Vancouver. And Vancouver is where we find this exclusive YouTube add this week.
The song, an unpredictable piece of breakbeat psychedelia called "Slog," is from Pacific Rhythm - The First Wave, and is by a very prolific guy named Phil Western, who went under the name of Cap'm Stargazer for this one. With this track, Western takes us on an under-five-minute journey through a dark forest of sorts, with an alternating slate of complementary drum breaks that get surrounded by a cycle of changing and reverberating ambient sounds and synth tones. A creative and lively gem that's currently sitting at just under 1,000 plays on YouTube.

Ola shook her head as she calmly knocked on the door, she looked around the hall before her gaze was ripped back as the door opened and there the devil stood himself. Randy peered down at her with his brow raised slightly,
“Where have you been?” He muttered out as Ola rolled her eyes and squeezed her way past him, brushing against his chest. “I had a meeting with creative. They had some ideas for me, that's all.” She gave a lame shrug as she looked around with a confused look. “Where the hell are Cody and Ted?” She frowned slightly as he closed the door and stepped towards her again. Goddamn she always forgot how short she was, especially compared to him. She studied him silently as he walked past her and sat by his bag. He moved like a panther stalking his prey, every step was calculated and you could see the muscles flex under his skin. Had he toned up more? His thighs looked bigger, if that was even possible.
“They went to dinner.” She blinked as he finally answered her, it wasn’t the time to get distracted by him. “Right…why didn’t you go with them?” She was genuinely confused, they usually went together and it wasn’t like they needed her to be there.
Randy looked up from his bag slowly, making Ola freeze. God talking to him lately even made her nervous. His blue eyes were darker than normal before he looked back down, “I wasn’t really hungry and Cody mentioned you had to hang back so I offered to stay.” She nodded dumbly, “Right….well..” She used her thumb to point to the door, “I’ll wait outside while you get dressed so we can go…?”

It is September! It is fall, for whatever flavour fall is for you. For me, it is the beginnings of oranges and a joint-warbling gradient of temperatures that range from the 80s to 60s. This is the shortest playlist of the year so far, but it felt complete and it was nice to loop it over the workday.
There wasn't much of an originating theme here other than the concept of school beginning, summer ending, treading into the depths of fall. I was grateful for Dead On A Sunday to drop 'Bloody September' this month (or maybe it was August as I often throw songs that aren't right for the month into future playlists) as it let me have a good dark ending for the start of October.

Strongly suggest you listen to the cover of 'Mad World' before you watch the video because if you don't know who Puddles Pity Party* is it is quite the surprise.
It looks like 'C'est la vie (Edit') is not currently on Spotify, but here it is on Youtube. Like any dance song, there are a couple of versions but the plain "(Edit)" one is what I dug.
Unlike their other albums, Boy Jr.'s Sheesh! isn't available outside of Spotify, as it was for a commercial music library, which is exciting for them! I would like their music to be in things.
There's a Chavela Vargas song in here and I love her and if you can find a way to watch the 2017 biography Chavela, do so (Reelgood shows it as available on Prime, Tubi, Plex, and Kanopy).
