I'm unsure of how to start this, but I felt the need to share the story about my friend who only ate crackers for lunch.

When we were little, she would come in to school with a pink plastic lunchbox full of cheese and crackers, and we would sit on a bench under a tree and eat it together. We would chat about cartoons we'd watched after-school the day before and gossip about other kids as I ate cubes of cheese from her lunch and grapes from mine like a Roman emperor.

She said her mum packed extra so she didn't mind sharing. She only ever ate the crackers. She said it was because she liked the crackers better anyway and let me eat all the cheese. I would give her a handful of daisies and some grapes from my lunch as a thank you.

I learned years later that she was lactose intolerant. She brought the cheese especially for me, so that we could eat lunch together.

I don't know how to end this but I think about her a lot. About how much she cared about me to fill half her lunchbox with something she couldn't eat. I think, if I had to pick a moment where I felt most loved, it would be on that bench under the tree.

Love is cheese and crackers, and a handful of daisies.
