Based on the superhero team from Marvel Comics, this film and its sequel feature a fantastic cast, striking visuals, playful humor and tons of crimefighting action.

The actors who bring Stan Lee’s heroic quartet to life include: Jessica Alba as Susan Storm (aka the Invisible Woman), Ioan Gruffudd as physicist Reed Richards (aka Mr. Fantastic), Chris Evans as Sue’s brother Johnny Storm (aka the Human Torch) and Michael Chiklis as Ben Grimm (aka the Thing). Julian McMahon plays a wealthy scientist/entrepreneur named Dr. Victor Von Doom. In addition, Kerry Washington appears in both movies as Ben Grimm’s blind love interest Alicia Masters.

The first movie depicts the Fantastic 4, ordinary astronauts and scientists, receiving their powers from a cosmic radiation in outer space. Together, the team goes up against a power-hungry Victor. The second film shows the group’s confrontation and eventual alliance with a god-like entity called The Silver Surfer.

Jessica Alba is the epitome of someone whose attractiveness visibly stands out even when she’s invisible. Chris Evans (in his first Marvel comic book role) is absolutely hilarious as the immature, charismatic daredevil who happily flaunts his powers to the public. Ioan Gruffudd is an exact replica of Reed Richards as he’s got the look, helpfulness and intelligence of a good leader. Michael Chiklis definitively embodies the role of a person whose physical rock-like formation resembles his grumpiness, but is a soft-hearted soul. Julian McMahon is someone whose intimidating onscreen presence is enough to unleash the conceited, menacing demeanor of Victor Von Doom (who’s also the monarch of a fictional country known as Latveria).

The special effects involve each ability related to the defining personality traits of the characters. Reed’s stretching represents the expansion of his scientific methods. Sue, despite her own brilliant mind, sometimes seemed a little out of place from the beginning. Aside from her invisibility, she has the power to project force fields, releasing her inner physical and emotional strength. But she gradually comes out of her shell as she embraces her gift. Johnny’s fiery engulfment represents his hotheadedness and wild enthusiasm. He can also fly when fully ablaze (just by saying “Flame on!”). Ben Grimm’s rocky appearance is the result of severe exposure to the cosmic storm. But his ability to perform superhuman feats of strength make him worthy of a superhero. He even has his own catchphrase as he throws his punches to the bad guys: “It’s clobberin’ time!”. Victor Von Doom’s condition is a durable metallic alloy (following an explosion that left a scar on his head during the storm). He wears a metal mask to hide his facial deformities. He can even manipulate electrical and magnetic currents, thereby absorbing massive quantities of energy to become an all-powerful enemy. As for the Silver Surfer, he’s a humanoid extraterrestrial whose reflective skin and cosmic powers represent his heraldry. The main source of his power is a surfboard-like device, which enables him to fly faster than the speed of light.

While the first movie is set in New York City, the second film goes around the world as the Surfer creates global disturbances and craters as he serves for a destructive entity called Galactus. That’s where the Fantastic Four (especially Sue) come in to reason with the Surfer in order to spare mankind and Earth.

The soundtrack includes a collection of songs from a diverse group of musicians. The track list includes: “Come On, Come In” by Velvet Revolver, “Noots” by Sum 41, “On Fire” by Lloyd Banks, “Everything Burns” by Ben Moody featuring Anastacia and “Surrender” by Simple Plan.

Finally, the message is don’t ever be ashamed of whatever power you receive as it can make an amazing difference to ordinary people. All in all, I recommend both those movies to every Marvel fan.

Mini Review - The Blackening (2023)

i really like it (high tier?) 🤔

Quite a Black-ass funny-ass horror, but much more of an interesting Black movie than a horror. Like, the main horror is in the racist murderer at a cabin in the woods. Like,... I'm not even gonna explain that. You either get it or you don't. Which brings me to the main thing I wanna say. This really is for Black people. I wouldn't recommend it for people who aren't in some way "Black" (biracials, getcha ass in here).

I'm serious when I say this isn't for Euros. Like, y'all really shouldn't* watch this unless you were out of the blue invited by Black people or are yourself very involved with Blackness in some way. (whatever dafuq that means) Should full-on Euros who have no actual exposure to Blackness see this movie? Absolutely not. Everything's dangerous in the wrong hands, and some of y'all asses are gonna do the absolute wrong shit with this. Intentionally or not.

for the African Descended

Y'all, this some shit. God damn. So glad I just happened to see this in a small theatre filled to a third with mostly Afros. Got to enjoy the reactions almost as much as the movie. Is it great, though? As a Black movie, yeah. As a horror movie, nah. As a Black horror, yep. As a Black comedy horror, hell yeah. And to be real, I don't think non-Black reviews/opinions/criticisms should even be taken into account for this one. Like, I read 7 recent reviews on Letterboxd before getting to Darryl Buckhanan's and seeing all the convincing I needed. This ain't for everybody. And I'm glad it ain't. Let ma ass be. Real talk,... how many o'y'all would'a failed that shit? 💀

Real talk, I didn't trust this movie to not be for Euros because of the director (Tim Story). Here me out! Of his 23 movies listed on Letterboxd, I've only seen five: Barbershop (2002), Fantastic Four (2005), Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), Think Like a Man (2012) (they just had to put Rihana’s abuser in this 🙄), and this one. While I enjoyed all of the other four, I 1) haven't seen his other Black-casted works and 2) strongly suspected Shaft (2019) of being made for Euros everytime I saw its preview in theatres. Never bothered to confirm that suspicion, but I don't feel the need to. Fortunately, that review convinced me of this one and I saw it yesterday.

Side Notes:

Would not recommend watching 3Peat Presents: The Blackening - Uncensored before the movie if you're already interested. If you ain't, then go ahead and ask yourself if you want a feature length film inspired by this 4 minute Comedy Central skit. (the answer is yes)

Is it weird that I hope Doctor Doom isn't the Big Bad in the MCU’s Fantastic 4 ?

Like I’m not saying exclude him entirely - I have no doubt with the right writers, they could introduce Victor and build up his presence for Avengers: The Secret Wars...but he doesn’t necessarily need to be center stage in F4.

Let me explain. Doom has been the Big Bad of three of the past live action F4 movies. He was the secondary antagonist in Rise of the Silver Surfer, and even then they pull the “Hijacked By Ganon” card.

And I’m just sitting her like “Why not give the Mole Man a shot?”

Plus with the Skrulls being built up to in Secret Invasion, the Skrulls and Kree were also recurring antagonists to the Fantastic 4, and I doubt they’d wrap up that arc in a miniseries. So perhaps they’d be the main threat in F4 ?

And it’s not like they could exclude Doom entirely. MCU’s Fantastic Four isn’t meant to be an origin movie, so they could establish Doom as being a villain they fought in the past, in some unseen origin story. 

Maybe they establish Victor as being someone of importance, especially to Sue and Reed, without him being the threat they’re up against. Doom could be the Greater Scope Villain, someone who has/had an effect on the, but little to no direct presence in the story. 

Or he could be a supporting character, put into an Enemy Mine situation, so they could directly build his relationship with them, but unlike Rise of the Silver Surfer, he doesn’t betray them by the end of the film...they’d still plant the seeds setting up a villain role in Secret Wars.
