I’ve just finished watching ‘The girl in the picture’ on Netflix and it’s one of the most horrific and heartbreaking documentaries I’ve ever watched.

Watched "The Girl in the Picture" on Netflix, and I was impressed with the way it was handled right up to the point they had the girl's mother talk about being with the violent offender that stole her child after he'd approached her in a church where she was praying to get her kids back after having them taken away for going to Social Services to try and get help for her PTSD.
He told her God had sent him to help her. He then spends the next few years psychologically abusing her, and then when she's in jail for a 30-day sentence for passing a bad check, he disappears with the eldest and dumps the other two at an orphanage.
And then it cuts to the adoptive mom of this woman's granddaughter, and she talks about the biological grandmother clearly doesn't care because she doesn't want to see the granddaughter, and they speak to a friend of the kidnapped girl, who says that she was kidnapped, and her mom spent five years searching for her.
And, like, This poor, old woman is clearly traumatized by what happened to her. When she went to the police for help in finding her kids, they said that since she was legally married to the dude, it wasn't considered a missing persons case.
And this is after the PTSD and his years of abuse, and whoever sat there and went, "Oh, you know what'll really make the last ten minutes of this documentary pop? What if we show a traumatized, wheelchair-bound elderly woman, and then immediately show two people talking shit about her because they don't agree with the decision she made.
Just have some fucking compassion. Not sure if that's aimed more at the adoptive mom or the friend of the kidnapped girl or at the crew of the documentary, et. al, but fuck you.

2022 Documentaries Highlight
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This year I have watched a lot of documentaries. The first half of the year I watched documentaries on famous people: musicians, actors, basketball players and public figures. These were interesting, insightful and in some cases shocking. In some cases, they made me remember my childhood and my teens. Then I started watching true crime documentaries. I like the investigation process of how these crimes are uncovered. These are unbelievable horror stories and it sadness me to know they are not fiction. We really need to be careful of who we trust.

how do conservatives think talking to children works? if a four year old came up to me and said “i’m a cat!!” i would say “really? what makes you a cat?” and they’d say some shit like “i have claws >:)” and i’d be like “oh wow, you do have claws. but wait, i thought cats had pointed ears!” and they’d say “they DO!!!” and then i’d pull up a picture of an elf and ask “is THIS a cat?” and they’d yell “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO”
u wouldn’t say “fucking hell, Emily, get it together. this is the real world”

it drives me bonkers the way people don't know how to read classic books in context anymore. i just read a review of the picture of dorian gray that said "it pains me that the homosexual subtext is just that, a subtext, rather than a fully explored part of the narrative." and now i fully want to put my head through a table. first of all, we are so lucky in the 21st century to have an entire category of books that are able to loudly and lovingly declare their queerness that we've become blind to the idea that queerness can exist in a different language than our contemporary mode of communication. second it IS a fully explored part of the narrative! dorian gray IS a textually queer story, even removed from the context of its writing. it's the story of toxic queer relationships and attraction and dangerous scandals and the intertwining of late 19th century "uranianism" and misogyny. second of all, i'm sorry that oscar wilde didn't include 15k words of graphic gay sex with ao3-style tags in his 1890 novel that was literally used to convict him of indecent behaviour. get well soon, i guess...

LITTLE COMIC based on how I made a friend at 1 am while crawling on the ground, picking up Maybugs to save them from getting squished by cars.
PRETTY SURE I must've looked like a strange little gremlin to any onlookers passing by. Also yes he held a bug like a CHAMP. He passed my test. We still hang out 😂
