this is somewhat of a vent post & something i said i would not do again but has been plaguing me enough that i think getting it out might feel better. so. has anydoggy else been. Baffled and upset by nora sakavic’s refusal to speak on how terribly aftg has treated its characters of color? with the author of the series coming back with a new book and starting up on her online activity again, and questions of what she’d change about aftg bubbling up, it’s particularly glaring to me that we are all playing this very long game of pretend where we ignore how badly the non-white cast has been treated & her lack of thoughts on it
and i understand not wanting to bring up nicky and thea because people pick on her for it. i’m not trying to discredit nora sakavic’s terrible history of getting harrassed online by aftg fans. but i think it is very cynical, and it is very juvenile, and most of all very cruel, that she gets to ignore the very real ways the books have set up these characters to be hated. i think it’s obvious why the characters who get the most hate are the only canonical characters of color, and i think we do not get to treat this like a deliberate decision on the fandom’s part when the books have put these same characters in degrading and embarrassing and terrible positions in the first place. aftg is not a story about nice characters with clean pasts, but there is a very specific nastiness to the only characters of color being a brown man who sexually harasses and later assaults the main character, a black woman whose only scene is her lashing out at her love interest after being ignored for the first two books, and the japanese villain who gets maybe two lines of complexity before he goes back to being a terrible person. the white cast, in comparison, while not at all free from flaws, are never shown to commit mindless evil; all of their actions are ultimately justified. the book goes out of its way to give them concession after concession. we know exactly who to side with, because aftg tells us who these people are. does nicky’s assault ever get addressed in the books? does riko’s reasoning to be the way that he is ever gets more than briefly aluded to? is thea reserved even a shred of humanity or grace in her one scene?
anyway. it’s been years of talking about this and the fandom has been constantly hostile to criticism in this regard, and more recently any criticism at all, and it’s Grating to be on the other side of this discussion. it’s exhausting to know that in ten years we do not get even an acknowledgment besides the author saying she will not answer questions about nicky and thea anymore. it’s upsetting and it’s ugly and i wish no one had to talk about this again, but we do because what i thought was common sense has been washed away by a sudden influx of no-nuance adoration for the trilogy. basically i hope we all explode
two hours later edit: you're allowed to reblog this! sorry about the confusion
#this has been so upsetting to notice but 🥹whatever#there is a different kind of bitterness to thinking about how ten years have passed#and we are getting new content that changes and maybe even rectifies many of the ways we see and interact w aftg#and none of it not a bit of it addresses the racism#how it’s been ten years and the only thing we really get to show it is a book about a ship between two white men the fandom came up with#after seeing them be Suggested to interact in canon#i understand not wanting to hurt nora sakavics feelings by asking her about this#but imagine how tired we are. Imagine how tired we are#do you know how bad it feels to read through nicky’s worst moments in aftg#and know that he was written this way because he looks like me?#do you understand how exhausting it all is. can you imagine?#the fandom has been so quick to undo the criticism fans of colors have been making since day one#and for what. for what! my doves. for what?#have we come out of it any greater? have we done anything but lie to ourselves?#and anyway this is not some mindless pessimism#this is not me telling you that aftg is bad and you cant love it; cant have it mean anything to you#this is me saying that when we acknowledge these things it makes us better readers and better people#nora sakavic if you are reading this from whatever hellhole america you find yourself in#grabs you by the shoulders. This is not the end#this is not something to sit back and feel bad about#you have opened the floodgates of hell with tsc. kick the door in and release a revised version of aftg#there is a real material way for you to make this better. it is possible and it will not kill you#i would read a revised aftg. my mutuals would. many many many many fans would#making mistakes is not just a human right its a human inevitability#but we do not have to let ourselves get defined by them. We can do hard things#lets go of nora sakavics shoulders. anyway. where were we#aftg#txt#tsc

Ya know, I was gonna be done. I spent hours yesterday talking friends off ledges when people were harassing them for being excited about the watcher announcement, or when their anxiety ballooned while watching the never-ending fucking tide of absolutely entitled morons kept piling on and on and on and spreading baseless bullshit every where.
But like, I cannot be done.
Because I am just so fucking disappointed. I'm so fucking sad to be sitting here watching people writhe with glee over the reactions to the announcement, and fill their little vengeful mugs in anticipation of watching the fall of a fledgling independent media company they are literally standing around lighting matches to throw onto the pyre.
Y'all make me sick.
You profess to love these guys, to want to see them succeed, to enjoy the stuff they make for you. You beg and demand and scream for more time with Ryan and Shane and bitch constantly during periods of the year when it's not Ghost Files or Puppet History time. You complain to anyone who will listen about how this is a betrayal, as if they're your fuckin' friends who you know personally.
News flash, they're not. They never were. You're parasocially attached to the plush puppet and the guy who sticks his hand up it in a way that is detrimental to your critical thinking skills and you know what? Fucking don't subscribe to the streamer. Who fucking wants you around anyway?
I would bet American cash money that none of you have EVER had to sit with your staff in a meeting and figure out how you were going to keep your company afloat. That none of you have ever had to decide to take a risk like this, in this kind of economic climate and be cautiously excited about what it might mean for you and then to have this absolute viciousness being the response.
I'm really sorry that for some people the price is just out of their reach. I completely understand wanting to join in on something and being unable to because of the money. The amount of times I've had to say no to doing something fun because I just didn't have the cash is not a small amount. It sucks. It really sucks.
But you know, the emotionally mature response to not being able to afford something is to be like, well is there a way that I can save up for this? Something else I can cut out? And if the answer is no, then, unfortunately, sometimes, you just have to be left out. This is a fact of life.
Do you people also get bitchy with artists who charge commission prices that mean they can afford to live?
The comparisons of Watcher to non-network television streamers are laughable. Like, Watcher is absolutely not on the same level of operating profitability as other streaming services. They are an independent production studio that gives a shit about making content that they like to make and taking care of their employees and the other people who are associated with them. And in order for them to continue to make the stuff we like (Ghost Files, Puppet History, et al), we're gonna have to buy-in.
Seeing people say with their full chests that they should just fire people? Are you fucking hearing yourselves? Who should they fire? Their queer employees? The people who write and do sound and edit? The people who make Ghost Files or Puppet History look the way it looks? The people who are the reason the shows work?
And, I'm sorry, but if you think that the solution here is that they should just ... make worse shows, I don't even know what to say to you at all. Sorry that Steven and Ryan and Shane wanna do more than lifeless unsolved copies for the rest of their lives. Go watch fucking unsolved if you want that, watcher has always wanted to do more, do better, make bigger things. And you know what? They are for sure allowed to do that.
I am also utterly enraged by the racism. I cannot even imagine what it's like to be any Watcher employee of colour today, watching the hate and the cruelty roll in. Y'all are just fucking mean, and gross, and I hope you all walk on legos in the dark in bare feet.
Everyone who is acting like this is some fucking personal betrayal needs to go smoke a bowl or do a bong rip and chill the fuck out.

i have a lot of gripes with the way mizora's sex scene (and honestly the relationship she has with wyll in general (thanks, christmas animation)) is handled, but its not necessarily a terrible addition to an rpg where you can do some bad shit (iirc you cant fuck mizora if you assaulted the grove tho, so mostly good pcs even get this option). what is terrible is the lack of gravity given to it, and the fact that you can only betray wyll in this way. if you could also fuck gortash or shar, and doing so had tangible consequences no matter what, id be much happier with it. as it stands, a player who is in good standing with wyll (or doesnt play with him anyway) and is romancing astarion, shadowheart, or even fucking karlach (why is this not a dealbreaker for her???) gets away with it. why is fucking the woman who owns an origin character's soul and calls him her pet and turned him into a devil and has condemned him to eternal torment not a big deal?
it would also sting less if (and i say this as a lesbian) wyll had a sex scene. wyll is the only romanceable character with no sex scene, and his abuser gets a long-ass full frontal cutscene. come on. do larians writers understand that abuse against men is always bad, or is it okay when the abuser is a sexy white (coded) woman? wylls selflessness to the extent of self-harm is a core part of his character, but its fucked up that everyone gets away with hurting him. he only leaves if you attack other people (the grove), but you can do whatever you want to him personally. you cant hurt mizora, even though shes hanging out in. your. camp. because who gives a shit? hurting a black guy is a victimless crime in this game

I have so many people telling me to play Helldivers 2, and yet every time I tell them I just don't like the vibes of it and I played the first game and didn't like the satire, I get told I'm just not media literate enough, and that I obviously don't just get satirical treatments of overwhelmingly evil ideologies.
I've been a 40k fan since I was eight, and I've had tons of great friends and cool people into warhammer my whole life. I have dealt with countless fucking dipshits who were either outright fascists or /pol/-ass cryptofascists. I have also dealt with countless people who assume being a fan of any warhammer property is a mark of being a cryptofascist. Both of which are exhausting douchebags.
I'm also a fan of Starship Troopers, specifically the movie version that's a direct fuck you to the original author, and all the deconstruction and exploration of political propaganda that franchise has been able to put out over the years, especially its satire of the U.S.'s involvement in the Vietnam and Iraq wars.
In both of those communities, we have to constantly deal with the fact that parody (or really any portrayal) of an authoritarian ideology inevitably attracts real life fuckwit brainwashed members of that exact ideology who are all-in gung ho enthusiastic about the fictional authoritarian ideology of the setting. I'd like to think we do a good job. I'd like to think for every pasty teenage asshole screaming slurs at Eldar players, we've got ten more rational and emotionally mature folks who understand it's fiction.
So for a while I was inclined to re-examine my experience of the first game, and potentially give this new one a shot with the same caution and "media literacy" I apply to Warhammer and other games where you actively play as the villains.
...but then I actually looked up discussions of the game, and it was truly astonishing the number of times I saw supposedly levelheaded fans of the game shouting slurs (like libcuck K***), saying shit like (This is just another gamer gate/SMH why are there no straight pride flags), and typing stuff like "Kite Yams Street" at people who dared expressing their concerns at how the community actively glorifies some of the stuff in the game.
What really fucking disappointed me is how many upvotes and people agreeing with them there were, even on the main Helldivers communities.
As an example, from just a handful of Steam threads. (AND THEY ARE ALL FUCKING LIKE THIS)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are some of the least gross examples I could find.
Virtually any topic on Reddit, Steam, Twitter, or Discord that even mentioned fascism indirectly becomes an absolute shitstorm, with Helldivers fans actively arguing with both people who think the game fails as a parody, AND with people openly, unironically, and EXPLICITLY self-identifying as fascists.
Because saying this game about authoritarian dystopia is attracting authoritarians is stupid and bad. There are no authoritarians in our community.
But also remember to tell the authoritarians in our community that they're stupid and bad.
I have to conclude that the Helldivers community is just instinctually hostile and dismissive to people who are in any way uncomfortable with the premise or delivery of the satire or the state of the community. "Stop putting politics in our political parody game!" I guess.
If your fandom is actively in a pitched civil war with openly avowed fascists within your community, you are not "just a parody," and it's extremely immature and hypocritical of the Helldivers 2 community not to openly admit to this issue and address it without screaming invectives at people who are scared off by it the same way Warhammer, Star Wars, and Starship Troopers have been able to in the past.
So let's just say now I don't feel bad in the slightest for being completely uninterested in Helldivers 2 anymore.
If I wanted to get slurs yelled at me over voicechat by a bunch of 20-something MAGA CHUDs I'd just reinstall Mordhau or Call of Duty. That I'm used to.
But it's one of the most depressing things in the world to get yelled at by self-identified leftists just cause I said a mean thing about their funny new Not-Starship-Troopers game and how it might, possibly, have attracted some of the exact sort of people they supposedly oppose.

More than a year has passed and people are still vilifying Allison for:
Killing one man over Viktor killing a billion. Or Five killing a good hundred given his status as a prolific assassin.
Or Allison killing Viktor’s “child” over Viktor killing Claire. (And again, never was it even implied that Viktor saw Harlan as a son. He babysat Harlan for a month. Allison birthed Claire and raised her for 8 years.)
Or Allison forcing Luther to kiss her (and stupidly calling it attempted rape) over Klaus who slept with his brainwashed followers.
Take a seat and sort through your double standards and then think about why they’re there.

i swear some of you people need like. a sign next to mcr art that has the rising sun in it telling you not to reblog it, or something. i keep seeing art with the rising sun in it making the rounds again and again without mention of, i don't know, the symbol that represents a longstanding history of imperialism and genocide? like did you guys just never learn from the myriad of people telling you on here not to do that or is there something i'm missing. it's not an unreasonable request not to spread art with hate symbols in it, so either you didn't see the posts, or you care more about the aesthetics than east and southeast asian people. judging by how many posts have been made and how far they've spread, i think i know which is the answer.

You know it is so fucking tiring to try your best and explain to people why so many of the arya fan arts are criticized by us but you have them pretend like we are screaming our heads off for no particular reason. They see nothing, they hear nothing, they try to tell you that no you are just seeing things that aren't there and ruining it for everyone. That it is nothing but some olive tonned skin and not as if the character is being made a whole different race. At the end of it all you are just another angry woc screaming at them in hopes they will listen.
The gaslighting is truly on another level and it doesn't matter how clear we are with our points, they refuse to listen to anything we say. The same people who pat themselves on the back for regurgitating faux-progressive talking points won't even let us have these conversations in peace or amongst ourselves. Like I've said before, their only interest in discussing racism is when they can use characters of color to make a character they hate look bad. Otherwise, they don't care and they have no problem talking over, or talking down to, fans of color. We're supposed to tiptoe around fandoms nonsense guidelines for misogyny ( which only really pertain to one character) but the second we broach the topic in a way that isn't to prop up a character, we're the problem. This is why I try not to give them any attention because in the long run, they're not worth the time or effort.

I’m putting the energy out there from now bc I’m sweating
Being a black fan in fandom has always been so damn nervewracking and now that I’ve found my new fav thing I’m absolutely begging y’all not to ruin it with racism
Please please don’t make this fandom space another regret. Please give louis & Claudia the grace of nuance and just basic compassionate understanding I see everyone zealously granting lestat with all this brat prince apologism (me too bitch tf)
I know how tides can turn when bipoc characters do the same messy and toxic shit their white counterparts do and it’s always turned me away from consuming media with a disheartening quickness
Dealing with all the coded bs a la micro aggressions and then the more blatantly problematic shit takes from 1 brain cell (not affectionate) ppl in fan spaces is like waiting for the other shoe to drop almost always. I don’t wanna be disappointed, I’m begging y’all to behave yourselves and to act with decorum and some goddamn sense. Like on my knees pls don’t make me give up this show out of sheer frustration
This is just a manifesting post for what’s coming now that shit’s imminently hitting the fan. Just a quick tumblr prayer bc PLEASE I’m trusting y’all (real allies i hope) not to be as basic and reductive and disappointing as countless other fandoms I’ve had the misfortune of being in
I’ve loved this property since I laid eyes on the movie 20ish yrs ago and now having Jacob Anderson Sam Reid and Bailey bass bring these characters back to life so lovingly is making my gay ass transcend in the best way. Full offense to Scientologist Tim cruise and domestic abuser bred Pitt but this show is giving what they couldn’t and I am in shambles as evidenced by this rambling post. Like I haven’t done anything on here except reblog shit for years so it’s serious now bitches (affectionate)

the reason that the US treats the holocaust the way it does is so it can congratulate itself on "saving" jews from it and ending the holocaust. never mind that a huge reason so many jews died is bc the US basically wouldn't let us in after 2023 and we weren't able to escape Europe (many, many tried). Anyway the response to this isn't "stop thinking the holocaust is important" or "antisemitism isn't pervasive/non-Jews don't harbor subconscious antisemitism." Honestly your post is pretty gross and I've unfollowed. Sorry my intergenerational trauma no longer serves whatever political affiliation you have, and so now you have to minimize it as a reaction. Maybe Jews shouldn't be rhetorical tools at all. The Holocaust was a massive disaster to Jewish culture and soul and identity that will take centuries to heal from, and we never fully will. And none of that is what the US cares about. Be careful when you critique philosemitism you don't just veer into antisemitism instead. Because that's all philosemitism ever really was.
...why are you repeating everything I said back to me?
Me: ''The US governments
used philosemitism to weaponize the Holocaust by pushing a revionist narrative about their role in it
and making themselves look like the champion of Jews
to push their own military propaganda and deflect from their own ongoing war crimes and genocides
and turned antisemitism into a cudgel to attack anyone criticising Israel or the political establishment
(mostly BIPOC‚ so it looked like racism and anti-blackness mattered less)
all the while ignoring actual antisemitism or protecting their own Jewish citizens in any material way
as though the state had no role in empowering white Christian nationalism
because it served their purpose for Jews to migrate to Israel."
Some weirdo who can't read: ''you think antisemitism doesn't exist and the Holocaust doesn't matter??? Antisemite??"
I have better things to do than endlessly refute shit I never said nor implied and deal with your piss on the poor reading comprehension. This commitment to misunderstanding everything a PoC says and whitesplaining stuff we already said comes from your own racist suspicion and condescension. Dont let the door hit you on your way out.

Maybe this is my “I’m from New York so I didn’t choose to live here I was just already here” kicking in but can we actually learn to respect people’s privacy and acknowledge the fact that not everyone who lives in a major city is doing so because they want to be famous or the main character or an influencer or whatnot. I’m so sick of seeing tiktoks go viral that are just plainly stalking or doxxing random people who didn’t ask for attention or fame and are just living their lives. Especially given how many people in NYC are living with a wide variety of mental states, abilities, divergencies, and diversities treating them as a spectacle for your entertainment is deeply dehumanizing. Particularly in the past few years seeing so many content creators move here and gain their fame here it is becoming increasingly frustrating to feel like just existing in my home is not coherent with the burgeoning voyeurism culture that’s growing online. I, nor anyone who lives in a large city, should have to leave their homes every day worrying about the potential of being recorded and ridiculed online for just being a person.
People should be able to live their lives with the right to privacy. This isn’t to say that certain instances of internet activism shouldn’t have happened; for instance the Central Park bird watching incident (google it if you aren’t familiar but a woman was being racist towards a black man bird watching in central Park and his recording on the incident vindicated him). But instances like those are the exception and not the rule and many cases of publishing interpersonal conflicts/interactions is not from good faith activism or even from an activist point at all. Honestly what sparked this for me was that dumb tiktok that blew up of that girl looking for the person who kept writing “monke” on the whiteboard at her gym and the series of videos she made amassed more than 25 million views as she made a very public game out of trying to find the identity of this person. Some of her tactics included staking out at the gym waiting for this person or even asking the employees at the front desk who the person was. Maybe this person didn’t want to be a viral tiktok sensation and just wanted to write something goofy on the whiteboard at their local gym. Instead, this person has millions of strangers online seeking them out using unethical/invasive methods. All over someone who just wanted to write “monke.” Can we not just be a little silly in public without being at risk of it being the next internet sensation? If you live in a busy metropolitan area is it now your responsibility to make yourself as invisible as you can every time you step outside your front door? I genuinely leave for work each day wondering if I’ve maybe picked the wrong outfit, makeup, or maybe there’s an embarrassing stain or issue with my appearance that someone is going to see, record, and share online. I’ve even now seen TikTok’s of people recording through peoples windows commenting on how they’re living in their private lives now as well (the video in question is of a young woman recording a couple dancing through their apartment window). Even the guy who goes around “turning average people into models” initiates these videos by first taking non-consented photos of strangers on the street. Invasion is not flattery as much as people on the internet might like to think it is.
It is deeply unfair to ask human beings to live their lives in an unending panopticon. We should be able to go outside, make a joke, leave a silly note, have a bad day, an embarrassing moment, an emotional outburst, leave the curtains open with the knowledge that these moments belong to ourselves and are not suddenly (and without our consent) just become something for the masses to consume. Small spats that should remain small spats become global debates, a conventionally attractive or unattractive person becomes the internet’s object of desire or disgust. Let people exist. Let them have their dignity.

The Forgotten Heirs
Chapter 2!! Woohoo! I don’t have much to say here, I just hope you all enjoy this little peak into what Eric has been up to. The prompt for today is Overworked (also sorry the chapters are so short, but then again, you’ll be getting one every day, so… yeah.)
CW: (illegal) slavery, captivity, mouth whump, exhausted whumpee, fantasy racism
(*Note: Eric is called “the boy” a few times through this, even though Eric is an adult. This is because of how Eric sees Eric.)
— — —
Eric whimpered, twisting in the bindings. It had been weeks or months, Eric didn’t know. The only thing the vampire knew was the misery, agony, and cruelty that came with this life. All of the vampires here were put in cages and only released when it was time to shove them into painful contraptions that drained their mouth of their salvia, which had healing properties for the mortals.
Everything ached so much, but especially Eric’s mouth. It had been pushed and used beyond the realms of healthy, and then much further past that. Eric couldn’t even rub it, for the people that kept the vampires here also chained all of their arms behind their backs.
Eric longed to see the sky. It had been so long. So long since the fresh air has settled on Eric’s skin, so long since the breeze and the sounds of the night enveloped the boy like a newborn baby swaddled by their mother.
The workers here were all human and free, though Eric recognized the scars on some of their necks. A small handful of them had spent life much like the vampires’ situation: trapped and treated like an object, used only for fluids. The only difference was the humans were food and the vampires were medicine.
Eric was… conflicted about the fate of these former prisoners. Many humans had been rescued in recent years from enslavement. Eric should know, after all the money, time, and resources the vampire had donated to the cause. It was very possible that Eric had been instrumental in freeing the people who now held all of these immortal beings captive.
Eric was overjoyed with each and every person rescued, especially after how Eric had sat by and not cared as a child and very young adult. But where this internal conflict came in was how the humans were acting in return. They had every right to be upset, but to turn around and continue a cycle of violence and cruelty? Eric hated this. How dare they? Shouldn’t these humans, if anyone, know how horrible it is to be treated this way?
Eric didn’t expect all the humans that were rescued to bow and worship their vampire saviors. That would be ridiculous and vile. But Eric had not thought the humans would willingly become slave holders themselves. Surely they knew vampires could also experience fear, humiliation, and sadness?
Vampires and humans had been living amongst one another in the area for a very short 200 years. In that time, relations between the two species had been rough, to say the least. Eric’s parents and uncle had been some of first come, eager to establish themselves here too as an influential and impressive family, as they had been for more centuries then Eric could count.
The people at this salvia plant knew Eric. They knew the Dandrigdes. And they knew vampires were just as sentient and capable of pain and change as a human.
But they didn’t care.
And Eric was so, so tired of people not caring.
But there was nothing that could be done, was there? Nothing that Eric could achieve all alone.
