MOR! My beloved. I can always expect the truth from you. Overall thoughts on Between Us? I know the final ep was not your fave but how about the series? What would you want to keep? What would you want to change?

Eboni, my darling- hoo, boy. you're about to get way more than you bargained for, but I got some Thoughts™️ & some Things™️ to say.

disclaimer: Between Us was a sweet, serviceable, inoffensive show. I mostly enjoyed watching it & I loved being back in the UWMA universe, however tangentially.

speaking to the collective “you” here: if you loved the show from start to finish, I'm sincerely happy for you! if it'll lessen your BU fandom experience to read critiques- which is valid & completely understandable- click away. I swear I'm not trying to rain on your parade (or argue with anyone, which I won't be- period).

also, let's check ourselves: this is a show. it's not that serious- it couldn't be less serious, actually. sometimes I just like to go off the analytical deep end...it's a good time for a nerd like me. this is my house (my blog) & I'm just having fun, throwing digital paint around.

with all that out of the way, let's jump into it.

UWMA set an extremely high narrative standard. we knew from scene one the writers weren't messing around. that opening is burned into my memory forever.

from compelling flashbacks, to multiple couples that had something for everyone, to little plot details weaved in from the beginning that only made sense later- they knew exactly what story they were trying to tell & they told it in a big way. it was tightly constructed, cleanly delivered and hit all the right notes for me personally.

UWMA is a tough act to follow. in the end, it felt like Between Us barely tried. to quote an MDL reviewer (before the finale even aired): in with a bang, out with a whimper.

step one of any good story is solid character development. it's what draws us in, making & keeping us emotionally invested. we have to like these characters- and know enough about them- in order to care. that- and a good, solid plot- is what sustains our attention.

in a pretty atypical way, Between Us had serious emotional fan investment long before it had basically any character development (thanks to BounPrem's chemistry, IMO).

Win and Team had roughly 31 minutes of total screentime in UWMA, but you'd have never known it from the fever-pitch fandom support years before its release. we didn't have much real character knowledge or depth to go off of, but many of us came into this show ravenous for more of their story (raises hand).

the show's over now and, disappointingly, I don't feel like I learned much about either Win or Team that I didn't already know. we did see them struggle- Team with his guilt and insecurities; Win with his vague intimacy aversion and self worth issues.

Team and Win had plenty of things between (heh) the two of them to overcome- so what went wrong?

for me, Between Us suffered from a tragic case of barely-scratching-the-surface character development (there was so much there to play with narratively & yet- sigh), paired with serious flaws in the rising action.

every single story in existence uses rising action. to quote Henry of The Closer Look, a media analyst I like: "rising action is basically narrative tension. it's the way the conflict builds as the story goes along."

when a story utilizes rising action effectively, the audience ends up feeling almost elated by the end. it's almost like we actually went on the same journey as the characters, and we now get to bask alongside them in just how far they've come. we want to see characters we care for improve, persevere. overcome, conquer.

when rising action is handled correctly, the plot progression looks something like this.

Between Us had tension, it had conflict- but it looked something like this (I'd add way more hills, personally).

"what you're seeing here is an abomination of story structure." hey- Henry said it; not me.

the conflicts went up and down throughout the story. Team internally spirals; Win does something sweet and pulls him out of it. everything seems fine; Win pulls back.

rinse, wash, repeat in an endless cycle, made worse by the fact that they struggled with- and apparently overcame- the same. exact. issues, over and over, the entire time.

conflicts that seemed to be resolved came back exactly as they were, sometimes multiple times in a single episode. by episode 7 or so, it was getting tedious. by the end, I was just bummed.

for me, watching Between Us was going around in circles, hoping we were working towards some actually-important climax that never came. and I wanted to believe we were going somewhere, right up until the bitter beige-on-beige end.

there were no scenes that actually made me hold my breath, ala Bad Buddy’s confession-of-legends on the rooftop. no repeating themes, masterfully culminating in the finale (running up the cape in ITSAY). Between Us left me with an itch for depth and impact that only fan fics can scratch at this point (bless you writers).

yeah, Win and Team ended up together- of course they did. I don't think anyone had any doubts they would eventually. but standing at the finish line, do I care that they ended up together?

I hate to say it, but- not really. they didn't give me enough to make it feel meaningful- like it actually meant something. it just- is. yay? I guess?

this post was brutal enough, but to answer your question about what I'd keep & what I'd change? it's hard to pick when the whole thing just felt like special episodes (filled with lots of cute, sweet moments, to be fair) with an enormous dash of missed opportunity.

all in all, I don't regret watching but it's a universe I'll only be returning to via fan fic fixes- and UWMA, my forever top 3 BL beloved.

✨: gah, i struggle giving myself compliments so, oof, this'll be a struggle. but if i had to, i guess i'd sayyy: it's... personal in some aspects (see: all the times i rip off my own life and shove my woes gleefully upon the ghouls). i guess you could say it's straightforward (as in, i always try to explain what's happening in a scene in a way that's somewhat obvious), and uhhh...... horny can be used an adjective, right? haha ! :')

🍰: comfort fics my beloved <3 @miasmaghoul's "When Walls Come Down" and @crimsonclergy's "Home" are such massive comfort fics to me (and, of course, how could i forget your very own "Guppy" !!). i hold all of those fics very close to my heart <3 WWCD is one of the most cathartic fics i think i've ever read, Home feels like a cosy hug and a warm cookie, and Guppy is such a perfect comfort fic when i'm regressed :')

Slowly, he lifted his head ever so slightly, so that only his eyes would be visible to Swiss above his bent kneecaps; he didn’t think he’d be able to bear the multi ghoul seeing anything else—not right now, at least.

“Yeah, that’s it, nice and slow.” Swiss’ fingers twitched from where he’d rested them against the couch cushions, as if he was having to control himself to respect Rain’s wishes and avoid comforting him with a hug, or a hand on his arm. He lifted one hand—and Rain noted the sorrow in his eyes when Rain drew in a sharp breath of panic at the possibility of touch—and held it in front of Rain, moving it up and down in time with his own breathing. “Deep breaths for me, yeah? Nice, big breaths. Then we’ll keep talking, ‘kay?”

Rain sniffled—he didn’t even realise the tears had started falling again—and nodded, drawing in deep, shuddering breaths as Swiss told him to, following the movement of the multi ghoul’s hand as a guide for his inhales and exhales.

When Rain’s breathing had evened out somewhat and Swiss had determined that was as good as they were going to get, he began speaking again. “I know this isn’t easy for ya’, Rainy. I– I’m sorry this has to be so unpleasant, but if something I said upset you, then I need to know. You get that, right?”

Rain hummed in agreement, nodding along numbly for what felt like the thousandth time.

My three most recent faves are The Ground You Walk On by @st-danger, this ficlet by @riconas and this ficlet by @crimsonclergy!

As for emotional scenes, I do pull from personal experience for the most part, but I try my best to get into the headspace of the character in question. It's fun to imagine how they would respond to a situation vs how I myself would respond to it. For example, if someone threw an insult at me I would generally shrug it off and try not to show how it stung. Dew, though, would be more likely to scowl and get his hackles up. Swiss would probably laugh it off while formulating a revenge scheme. Rain would have a sharp, cruel retort at the tip of his tongue. It's a fun thing to figure out.

btw I have not finished Umineko (I’m literally on the last leg of Episode 8, shortly after an important jump happens) but I’m so gushing with things to say about that I feel like I need to type this all out now (will start with impressions that are non-spoilery and go into impressions that are big spoilers. there will be a dividing line which I earnestly recommend you do not cross if you have any interest reading it yourself.)

Absolutely 10/10 for me. Can feel like a climb at times but that feeling increasingly goes away as you get used to the pacing. Any fumbles Umineko has for me personally are so small in the grander scope of what it’s doing that it doesn’t even feel worth acknowledging them. Literally a story that is going to affect my view on life. I really fell for the charm of Ryukishi’s goofy ass old sprites too after a while, it’s really compelling to me that Ryukishi was able to make such a good, earnest story while having kind of limited drawing ability. I’m dead ass serious, it’s really inspirational. The quality of the writing and voice acting especially is so good that after a short while you kind of don’t even process that the sprites look kind of silly-goofy at all. I highly recommend playing with the original sprites and voice acting if you can.

And the music! holy shit I can’t imagine getting through this story without the music! The fucking 1800′s pipe organ songs one minute, intense trance the next, distorted choir singing, a mellow beat that’s sampling that fucking ambulance siren! Probably my top faves are Infant Queen Bee, Golden Nocturne, far, Rain, Daydream’s End, Fall, Miragecoordinator, Melting Away, Dead Angle, Hope and probably like 15 more I’m forgetting. Absolute banger of a soundtrack. Virtually no misses and the ones that hit, HIT. I think I have spent nearly as much time listening to the soundtrack in between sessions as I have just playing the game itself.

I won’t go into detail about what the central messages of Umineko are because they could ostensibly be spoilers but they are pretty fucking hard to miss. If you have two eyeballs and a brain you will probably figure them out as you go because Ryukishi is NOT subtle about what he wants to say. He will smash you with a hammer making sure you get it. But it’s less of a giant metal warhammer and more of a little wooden mallet that he’s just hitting on your knee every 20 minutes to make sure you’re awake and following along.

The writing honestly can be very... it straddles the line between very straightforward descriptions and waxing very poetic about a particular topic. I won’t even say it’s particularly the best prose ever or anything - I think Ryukishi’s biggest talent is simply in how he’s able to convey the characters by always having a really solid understanding of how they react to things. Maybe his worst flaw is that sometimes he includes a scene or concept where I’m like “oh Ryukishi just thought this would be super fucking cool” but I can’t even hate because most of the time it is super fucking cool actually. Umineko is so dripping with earnest cheesiness in a lot of its delivery and character interactions that I can’t help but like it most of the time. Granted I am biased because I do enjoy stuff that is earnestly cheesy like 90% of the time. The goofy ass anime interactions characters sometimes have are used just sparingly enough and contrasted with the serious scenes that I found pretty much all of it enjoyable for what it was.

Be warned it is 150+ hours (faster if you are just reading but seriously those voice actors are top tier, big recommend) but it really needs... at least most of that time. I struggle to find a single exact point that I would shorten any part of Umineko because so much of it really is required to understand what the story’s going for but at the same time sometimes Ryukishi does love to sit you down and talk about the process of liquidating gold into cash money for 30 minutes. A lot of the worst of that is in the first episode to be honest so if you can get past that you’re probably golden. It’s got a hell of a hook by the end of episode 1. Go in as blind as possible and enjoy yourself.

All the losers are gone let’s partay.

Heads up I’m a little blasted so this might be a bit scrambled and all around the place so sorry, just writing stuff as I think about it.

I really adore the way that Beatrice is in literally every layer of this story. Like the concept of the masses being in such a rush to figure out what the truth of the Rokkenjima Massacre is that they end up literally trampling over the deeply embedded and sad story of Beatrice really gets to me. Like, the people who are looking at the Massacre from the angle that she even “exists” at all literally only see Beatrice as a piece in their own constructed games, an explanation that’s just one step to figuring out what was really important. But of course, Beatrice IS the heart of the story. The whole family is arranged around her like a web and she’s right at the center. She’s in every possible layer of this story that she can be, she’s the connecting fabric of everything important.

Also I really adored Battler and Ange as characters. It’s rare that a main character feels so relatable but I ended up really enjoying his personality by around episode 2 or 3. He’s just so stupid but also earnest and flustered. Try to give him a slight pass on episode 1 because he is supposed to be kind of dumb and immature on purpose... even if it probably could’ve been toned down maybe just a bit. He gets better, I promise.

(btw literally been here. so relatable.)

anyways moving on. Ange. absolutely enjoyed the hell out of her story in episode 4 and was so glad to see that she’s basically the conclusion to the whole Ushiromiya family story in the final episode as well. also, her being the focus of this really inspirational message of what it means to move forward with your life was really well done. it’s insane to me that people are still out there trying to “figure out” the mystery when Umineko tells you as bluntly as it possibly can that it doesn’t really matter - finding out what “really” happened can’t bring closure no matter what and holding and walking this tenuous tightrope between belief and non-belief is a better way to live. her goodbye with the family and battler was about where it got me pretty good I could not fucking hold back crying at that.

and speaking of the family at large, I really like pretty much all of them! even the stinkers are fun to make fun of. also, Eva in particular is the milf of all time for me, personally. in fact thinking on it the only character I can really think that still rubs me badly (even though it is of course entirely intentional that the reader feels this way) is Rosa. good fucking lord the moments of episode 4 with Maria and Rosa’s relationship being explored (or rather, the complete lack of it except for the spouts of child abuse) really hit me. that... is probably the most I’ve ever been emotionally effected by a piece of media in a long ass time, it was a rough chapter to get through. that said ryukishi’s understanding of domestic abuse is fucking incredible, does not surprise me that he was a social worker before working on VNs. beyond even just that dynamic he clearly has an understanding of the kind of broken adults that come out of highly abusive households. the final game of episode 8 with ange getting to see this world that could theoretically have been real had kinzo chosen love in the future versus love in the past was so sincerely sweet to me. sorry I am a sucker for sappy shit, it got me.

anyways let’s talk about the illusions. loved them all too. feels obvious to say but Beatrice is one of the characters of all time. also really liked Ronove, his and battler’s occasional moments of being bros out of nowhere were really enjoyable to me. also sorry gamers Virgilia is another milf of all time. loved her tender and sweet personality. but as for beatrice and co as a whole - I do enjoy what Ryukishi has to say about fiction. Indulging too much of your life in fiction is ultimately harmful but it can be a valuable crutch to people who are dealing with life or even just people who could stand to learn and grow more. it’s also such a loving letter to mystery as a genre, you can really tell Ryukishi was going hog for mystery at the time. and it does work as a completely conventional mystery too - figuring out stuff as you go and putting the pieces slowly together is a huge blast! I loved the scenes where he’s clearly celebrating that with the readers who tried their best to understand the story.

I managed to avoid most spoilers - the ones I saw beforehand were really minor and didn’t really help me in putting the mystery together - that said, I really only figured out that Shannon and Kanon were being performed by the same person not terribly long before the game revealed it pretty directly - I think only a few hours ahead of time. that said, I really did give it my all, I’m just not super good at mysteries. I did pick up on some hints early on, like being able to figure out some of the early closed rooms but I didn’t have enough context to join them all together and realize the Truth before the game spelled it out for me. and tbh, that’s fine! I loved how the game congratulated people who simply try to figure it out for themselves, regardless of if they’re successful.

btw it also took me so fucking long to read because I was reading it side by side with a friend (who had read the manga but not the VN) and we basically set it up to auto play (with japanese voice acting + the original sprites of course.) we’d play intermittently roughly every few months in leaps and progress little by little. I can’t fucking believe I wasn’t spoiled on any of the major elements playing like that, it’s a fucking miracle. we started reading it on and off like that nearly two years ago now but honestly it was worth.

god I have so many thing I could spend rambling on about this manga but it genuinely is up there with, like, War and Peace and Crime and Punishment and I’m not even joking. there’s some of what I would call “Goofy Anime Bullshit” that happens (and it’s especially coated in that layer of stuff you only really got in the late aughts anime communities) but even that I found pretty enjoyably silly after a short period of time and just ended up rolling with it. if you know someone who can see past that layer of Goofy Anime Bullshit and enjoys reading 150+ hour long visual novels, this is the thing for them.

and speaking of the length boy fucking howdy. it’s worth it. the amount of time dedicated to fleshing out every character and making me understand what kind of person they are underneath everything else really makes me appreciate everybody in this fucked up family unit. it’s not something you could replicate in a movie or any reasonably lengthy manga. the magic of getting to know the whole family, flaws and all, really sells you on what a tragedy it is regardless of what happened. there are so many early scenes where I was like, “okay what’s the point of this” that I look back in hindsight and I’m either like "oh that was actually super fucking important and I just didn’t realize it” or “oh this was giving me time to become familiar with this character.” fuck man, I even liked Hideyoshi and he almost didn’t do shit!

btw I got the culprits in bernkastel’s game figured out in one try (with the help of my friend bouncing ideas off of eachother)

anyways... I think that about wraps it up for me... honestly just a stellar game. It feels like one of those things where I’m going to catch myself thinking about the themes and what it was trying to say, just like Disco Elysium or a lot of Wildbow’s works or EEAAO. It almost makes me wish this story was in a more conventional book form because I think you could tell the core of what’s there but at the same time I don’t think it’d be worth losing all the other aspects that make it so memorable. It’s going to have probably 1/100th the readers it could have just for being a long VN rather than a long book series but I’d honestly rather have it this way. It’s such a weirdly specific gem of that era of internet-anime culture that I think the time has already passed that anything quite like it could come out. What a special little piece of media. If I have more to say after finishing out the ending proper I‘ll probably just edit my impressions on to this post and reblog again at a later date.

EDIT: It is now two days later and I have finished everything, including the last “????” segment. My thoughts on the ending - I liked it. It’s very sweet and depending on how you want to interpret certain facets of what you see, it can be read several different ways. Of course the way the narrative is set up, it very much wants you to pick the most optimistic interpretation but I like that there’s always room to explore just a bit. The point of whether Beatrice as a witch is real or not is entirely beside the point almost - there was a woman named Beatrice who brought happiness to her family (at least, in one world) as well as she could given her fucked up circumstances. That’s honestly all there really is to say on it. I can very much vibe with that message.

I was also earnestly expecting the last scene of Umineko to be even more bittersweet than it ended up being - I was really waiting for the very last scene to be Ange literally throwing away the key to Eva’s diary into the ocean. That is kind of what happens in a way, and the scenes in which they do explore Ange opening the diary and reading it are left deliberately obscure (as they should be) but I was really expecting it to be even more poignant than that. I was thinking Ange would literally never see the diary in any part of the story the reader saw at any point. It would’ve been very Titanic-esque in a way - Ange throwing away the only way for her to even possibly know what happened on Rokkenjima. The story does effectively do this, kind of, anyways, it’s just a lot more roundabout.

But yeah. Supremely sweet story. I will probably be thinking about it for much of my life.

What are your fave scenes from each Mxtx work?

I probably don’t need to say this, but I will anyway! SPOILERS for SVSSS, TGCF, and MDZS below!

Ill start with TGCF since it was the first I read. There are so many scenes that I loved, and this series was so long its a bit hard to narrow down, but everything in the White No-Face arc was impactful to me specifically. The 100 sword scene, the drunk scene, the suicide scene…I just think the arc did a really good job of portraying how helpless Xie Lian felt. There was literally nothing good happening. But my FAVORITE scene from it all was the bit where the man came back, in the rain, to apologize for being angry and tell Xie Lian to suck it up and get out of the rain. Something about the scene was so incredibly human, both for Xie Lian and the man. We have a tendency to see bad and assume there will only be bad, and it wasn’t just that it was a “happier” ending to it all. It was interesting and very REAL to see someone who had yelled at him for no reason turn around and apologize, explain he’d had a bad day, and then help him out without babying him.

MDZS was the second I delved into (technically at the same time as SVSSS but that’s not important) and I loved it for a lot of the same reasons. My favorite scene is probably the one where Lan Wangji visits Yiling and runs into Wen Yuan and Wei Wuxian. Everything about the setting was bittersweet—despite all of their disagreements in the past and the situation they’re in now they walk on egg shells and just sort of. Be friends for a bit. And then, Wei Wuxian, who knows on some degree that he’s ruining himself to save these people, walks in on the Wens throwing him a large dinner. And Wen Qing says they were AFRAID to ask him. That they thought he was some scary lofty figure but have grown so grateful that they want to give back somehow. And he just feels as if it doesn’t matter anymore how hard it is. Something felt so…painful but heartwarming about this scene. Like watching an old video that includes a family member that passed away or finding something from a friendship that didnt end well but was happy at the time. Im not sure if that makes sense. In that moment, despite their troubles, they just got to exist.

For SVSSS I’ll cheat and choose something from the extras because its kind of a tie. I loved the Bamboo Branch Poem extra so much, I love Zhuzhi Lang and Tianlang-Jun’s familial relationship a lot. The Airplane extras are also very near and dear to me as a moshang lover, but I love the bit specifically where Shang Qinghua runs away and Mobei-Jun tries to take him back and is actively making concessions to do so (carrying him, offering to make noodles) because

Overall, I think what I love most about MXTX books is how human the characters seem. Theres never a “good” or “bad” outcome necessarily. The Banyue arc is a good example in TGCF, or Wei Wuxian’s struggle to save the Wen prisoners in vain and tearing himself and his relationships apart in the process in MDZS. The gods in tgcf are more human than god, and the cultivators in mdzs and svsss are still flawed despite all their training and skills. Scum Villain is a bit different because it comments a lot of fandom culture and media consumption but ultimately its commenting about the READER instead of a character—still in a very human way.

I hope that wasn’t all gibbrish—I’ve been drawing and thinking about this question for a bit now and my mind is soupy from a busy week. So I hope my thoughts make sense. Thanks for the chance to ramble a bit and I wish you a great weekend ❤️🫶

REAL THOUGH about the drama you mentioned in your tags, that's exactly how I felt reading If My Wife Becomes An Elementary School Student's title, for example, but I'm told it's wholesome☠️☠️I would love to hear about the one you were thinking of though!

I WILL BEAR IT IN MIND TO PREPARE FOR ARACHTAGON WHENEVER THE TIME COMES... totally understandable to get frustrated with RNG on top of that, RPGs can be so evil 😭😭😭still, again, I'm glad you're back to it! Also totally understandable to want to play on the original consoles... NOTHING beats the experience... the availability of playthroughs nowadays is nice for sure to be able to experience the series without investing that much!

I would LOVE to see more Normal interactions between Ichiban and Jo for real😭they have so much potential for silly moments... ever-thankful for your content and I Can't Say Enough always looking forward to whatever you might have in store :] whether it's that or something else :]

I EXPECT YOU'RE DONE WITH EPISODE EIGHT NOW AT MINIMUM SO I WILL JUST SAY the Ohashi arc and Episode Ø [<- why the hell is ep eight called this] are peak to me I am soooo glad you enjoyed the arc... LOVE the OST too, Yugo Kanno is a legend. HOWEVER all the songs on it are titled words that start with S and P so you get titles like Scarlet Pussy 😭

OH BUT SPEAKING OF SP'S WACKASS STRUCTURE pleeeeeaaaase consider watching SP: The Motion Picture and SP: The Motion Picture: The Final Episode after you finish the show... there is A Cliffhanger and those are the true conclusions to the story... and SP Final In Specific is what blew my nuts clean off...

2022 Megaman Summer Fanart Contest - Rules Thread (CLOSED)

Happy Rockman Day! Here are your tasks for this year’s edition, if you would like to join in my 11th annual-ish Megaman Summer Fanart Contest. Deadline is a little shorter than normal (Aug. 14th), but still gives you 2+ months to draw. See more below.

Three categories, in which you are allowed to submit one entry for each category, if you would like. If you place in one category, you will be automatically disqualified from the other, for reasons of fairness, and to give other people a chance to win a prize.

CATEGORY 1: Under my Nombrellan

For those who are always happy when it rains. While they can also be powerful and destructive, I think a lot of us can appreciate and enjoy a sudden summer storm or downpour of rain. Sometimes you just have to enjoy splashing in puddles or getting drenched in an outdoor shower, and that fresh and clean smell as nature purifies everything.

For this category, your goal is to draw a scene with the characters of your choice with an umbrella as an accessory in a rainy setting. This can be a standard umbrella of your own design or including Mega Man characters that have umbrellas as part of their design (like Nombrellan, Rackaser, Cloudy Viruses, etc.) It can be a beach pic where rain ruins a day catching some shade under a huge beach umbrella. It can involve relaxing under a simple patio umbrella. Whatever creative way you can think of, as long as it involves an umbrella and a rainy day scene.

Content Requirements:

* Megaman character(s) of your choice

* Umbrella

* Rainy day scene

CATEGORY 2: Rockman World Amusement Park

Another rite of summer has been visiting an amusement park, whether it's the end of school field trip or for family fun. We've had the Hanayashiki park events in Japan in the past, but what if we had a full-fledged Mega Man amusement park in the vein of Nintendo having their Super Mario World park?

For this category, I'd like you to create a Megaman-themed amusement park scene, with your favorite characters interacting in some type of ride or attraction at this park. You are welcome to get as creative as you like, so if you want to make like a full park map with multiple attractions in your hypothetical park, go for it! But you will be mainly judged on the specific scene you draw, and how creative your ride/attraction is, to fit within this Rockman World concept.

Content Requirements:

* Design your own Mega Man-themed amusement park ride(s) or attraction(s)

* A scene with characters interacting on one of these rides/attractions

CATEGORY 3: Boing Boing Inflatable Pool Ride-Ons

This is the summer contest, so since the main categories aren't really swimsuit-themed at all, I figured I'd keep a third category if you still want to draw your faves in their beachwear.

Bounce Man and Boing Boing Industries are expanding their rubbery business ventures into the world of inflatable pool ride-ons, rafts and floaty accessories. For this category, you can draw your favorite Megaman characters relaxing, reclining, or playing around in the water on a specially-designed, Megaman-themed pool floaty raft or ride-on character. It can be whatever you want - item like an inflatable ride chaser or Item 2, a character like Rush or Cygnus Wing, or whatever, as long as the inflatable is also Megaman-related in design.

Content Requirements:

* Design a Megaman-themed pool inflatable ride-on, raft, or flotation accessory

* A scene with the Megaman character(s) of your choice interacting/relaxing in the water on one of these inflatables

PRIZES:

Inflation is killing us all, and shipping is still rough everywhere. So still no physical prizes, but much needed cash for you to use as you please.

The winners for each category will receive the following:

1st Place: $125 USD 2nd Place: $75 USD 3rd Place: $50 USD

When you submit, I would prefer you to include the following information in this format, along with your entry:

• (Your name/preferred alias) – As much as I usually know who you are, there’s always someone new or somebody who has a different preference from what their email name says.

Only submit your own work, as usual. Any character, major or minor, from any series is allowed. OCs are allowed, as long as your art contains at least one canon Megaman character.

As always, participants are allowed to submit from all over the world.

Paypal is still the preferred method for cash prize payouts. Please have a valid account to receive your winnings.

Okay! So I can only apologise profusely for how terribly late this is! My decision to draw certain bits was… arguably a little imprudent, given just HOW rusty I am atm. But nevertheless, here we go!

Mel:

Mel LOVES rain. It’s her absolute favourite weather. She’s never more content than when it’s raining. The torrential-...er (yup, that's a word) the better! Lil' lady takes after me, in that respect. Her fave thing to do when it's raining is go out and find a nice big puddle to wallow in :3

-👎 Is there someone your OC can’t stand, despite them being on the same side or sharing basic values?

She doesn’t get on particularly well with her aunt Pressyne, for reasons I’ll explore in-fic.

She HATES Matthew and would gladly unalive him, should the opportunity arise 😂

She also... doesn’t seem to like Scott all that much? And I have absolutely NO idea why, LOL. Just, every time they’re in a scene together she starts getting testy. She’s not a huge Christmas fan tbh, so maybe that’s it? Finds the whole thing a bit too twee. (I <3 Christmas, so idk what she's on about).

-🤝 Does your OC have someone they want at their side when they are scared? Who?

This is a really fun/interesting one, because it kind of depends on, like— at which point in her timeline the question is being asked? When Marthinus (her son) was still alive, I’d have said him, honestly. He was a really sweet, engaging little mans. Very bright, very funny. Mel also had a friend/confidant growing up who wasn’t all they seemed, but I’ll touch on that/them another time! Then we have Seb, who Mel adores but honestly, he’s a bit hopeless, even if his heart is in the right place.

Lucy is perhaps the biggest contender.

(Will be posting this artwork in full, later on! Am much happier w Mel's design here, which was inspired by lmelodie's wonderful illos! (And I also really like Lucy's witchy turnout))

The older and more capable Luce gets, the more she assumes a sort of maternal role, where her bestie is concerned.

And finally — perhaps surprisingly — we have Jack.

I think it’s fairly clear from the end of Chap 3 that Mel and Jack actually like and respect each other a great deal, and this relationship only gets stronger as time goes on! I know I ham up the “frenemy” thing, but really it’s just friendship with a heck of a lot of banter. Mel comes to see Jack as a bit of a pillar, when things get Tough. And I’m gonna be throwing a spanner in the works at some point that will ultimately (re)define their dynamic for centuries to come.

(Mel IS going to meet and befriend Jacquie at some point, too. I'm just being incredibly careful about how I write that bc I wanna do le frosty bagel justice!)

-🪤 What is one thing that could be used to lure your OC into a trap?

She’s fiercely loyal, so probably the threat of someone she loves/cares about getting hurt. Either that or copious amounts of dark chocolate. The really bitter kind. We’re talking 80% cocoa-plus, here (salted is even more tempting).

-🎒 If your OC had to pick three things of all their belongings to keep, which would they chose?

The snuffbox under her bed, the portrait miniature of Marth and her cockle locket.

Sebastian:

So, this is kinda out of left field but she tames sea monsters, lmaooo. Yup. The below is part of a much larger artwork that I'm honestly enormously proud of, which doesn't happen often! So thank you so much, Dani, for inspiring me to do an art piece that reminded me of why I went to art school/decided to plunge myself into tremendous debt 😂😂

No, they're not the best songs from animated movies. But they are pretty, and don't serve any other purpose than to make you feel good. We need to appreciate and celebrate that.

10 Chim Chimney Cheree

Feel good, optimistic song. It's just... about simple joys. He doesn't expect much so every little thing he gets is a source of joy and happiness and it makes him a happy man. Sometimes it just doesn't have to be complicated, you know ? It's just an homage to life, from poor people for which life isn't easy. Made us love chimneys for a long time...

9 Hail to the princess Aurora

Sounds better in french so I kinda get if english speakers don't... see the appeal I get. This song is part of the very old disney animation movies. Personally, I love it. Aurora is my fave princess and a song that celebrates her just makes me feel good. It's very melodious, very poetic and fluid sound-wise, it's a chorus that blends all voices perfectly. It's an euphoria filled celebration, it has the medieval aesthetic nailed, it sounds just this side of intense and serious. I love it, I think we should all be more grateful for old animated movies.

8 Suddenly - Help I'm a fish

Ok this one, I couldn't find an english dub for. It's german so maybe there isn't even if that surprises me. Help I'm a fish is very very good movie that sadly isn't known enough for my tastes. The story is very good, the villain has a lot to love, and there are good songs, and my favorite is this one ! It's a celebration, it's feeling good, it's feeling amazing and just plain enjoying the experience of getting to live as a fish, when you're a kid it feels like a dream. I wish I was a fish...

7 Your mother and mine

Soooo cute ! It's the exactly feeling of having your mom tucking you to bed with a soft voice and a gentle care, and you falling asleep to it. For some of us it's something we only imagine, but that imagination is always based on that scene. It's care and love and just summarize the 'mom' experience so much. Not me agonizing over getting the 'mom' in the heart tattoo from Mr Smee...

6 My own home

Just a pretty little song, something a child could sing irl, a little rhyme that you could hear anywhere in the world... I really love that song. It's cute and beautiful and soft and melodious and simple. Speak of a simple dream for the future. It's just that simple to get into my metaphorical pants.

5 Tomorrow is another day

Now this one is a good one. It's an 'optimistic through hardship' kind. It's a 'see the sunshine through the rain' one. I need that, sometimes. To remember there is beautiful things in the world, that I'll see that again tomorrow, when the rain will be gone and the sun will rise. It's a lullaby, it's something to listen while drinking coffee before work, when the sun isn't even up yet. It's the song you want to hear after you cried. It's seeing flowers in the asphalt. Sure, it's for kids. But we're all kids from time to time, and we are ready to believe pretty lies.

4 To the fairies they draw near

I really like that piece, that one minute long song. It's just light and sparkly like a fairy. A little rhyme to sing before going to sleep. It's pretty, it's hopeful, it's bright and cheery, it speaks of moonlight and spring and secret fairies that, during the night, make the world pretty and alive for you to witness in the morning. Those hidden little helpers without which the world wouldn't be as bright. Little fairies in the moonlight and a promise of spring, what else could we ask for ?

3 With a smile and a song

A classic. First Disney long movie, they just made a song to be pretty and cheerful and starting the long tradition of animated characters singing at random just to be happy. With a smile and a song, everything is better, the world doesn't seem as gloom, and your heart is a little warmer. It's that simple. And if haters mock you for spontaneously start singing out of nowhere, don't listen to them. Singing feels nice, even when you sing terribly.

2 All in the golden afternoon

One of my fave, of the ones I'm ready to make a cosplay and cover in a video for. Yes, it'd be of the buttered toast butterfly. I prefer the french version but it's probably only because I heard it first. 'Our thoughts are sometimes very deep, it's good to hear our opinions, because we are the beauty of the world in that flowery morning of may'. I just love it. It's pretty, it's flowers, it's beautiful and soft, a feel good song in the middle of a wild ride of a movie.

Honorable mentions

Stories (only listen the the french version, the english one is rubbish) : The Beauty and the Beast 2 shouldn't have existed. We mostly agree on this one. But I like the christmas song, and I love Histoires (french version of Stories) more than life. It's the song I listen to when I can't write and I feel like a impostor for calling myself a writer. It's forcing me to go back to basics, to remind myself that I love stories and that I love telling them, and that it's the reason I'm a writer. Powerful, fantastic, eerie, it's all the books you ever read, all in one song. I love it so much... Listen to the french version, please. Ditch the english along the rest of the movie.

God help the outcasts : it's hopeful if not too much, it's freaking beautiful visually, it's powerful while being a simple message, it's full of love and care that gets lost too easily, it's sad, but it's hopeful too. Beautiful.

Once upon a december : it's a classic and there's a reason for that. It's too powerful and intense a song to actually be in the top ten, but it's beautiful, with a fantastic aesthetic, and it really nails the vibe of the music box melody, at least at the start.

Heaven's light : yes it's in another top ten posts. I love it, okay ?? It's the musical embodiment of soft moonlight in a summer night, it's a shard of hurt wrapped in a blanket of soft hope, it's love in its purest and most innocent form, it's just the simple, unassuming joy of being in love. I'll die defending Heaven's light.

1 Little april shower

Clap clip clap little april shower. Only Bambi was truly an hymn to the beauty of every little parts of nature and life. The simplest beauties in the mundane moments. That little april shower that is warm enough not to chill you to the bone. Falling slowly like little diamonds or little stars. It can easily transform into a storm that destroys everything, but it's not, it's a harmless little rain that sings a song and make everything shine. It's a song about something that make us happy, so it makes us happy just as easily.

Scenes Between Akane and Sebastian

A/N: still can't draw bc of my carpal tunnel so here are some scenes I made between my farmer oc and everyone's fave emo boi Seb during their first days!! Also I attached a pic of how Akane would look like (made in picrew bc I still can't draw!!)

The first time Akane met Sebastian was on a rainy night. Akane was still new to Pelican Town and Sebastian was just returning from the beach. She was running around in the rain and got lost, bumping into Sebastian. He immediately knows she's the new girl everyone's been talking about but hurriedly says his apologies and left, leaving Akane confused and intrigued

Sebastian didn't like Akane at first because he thought she was just another foolish goody-two shoes. Sam likes Akane and even develops a small crush on her.

"Hey man, Akane is cute huh?"

Oh what?" Sebastian says, "I don't really care," he adds, focusing his attention on his cellphone.

Sam laughs, "Good, because she's my girl!" he says jokingly .

"Whatever dude, she's all yours."

When she first gave him a gift, he was flabbergasted. So surprised to the point he only let out a whisper of thanks. Akane barely heard and took this as a bad sign and apologizes. Before Sebastian can stop her, she turns his back to him and leaves, saying a polite goodbye. Things get really awkward between them

The next time they met, it was by the docks on the beach. It was another rainy evening. Sebastian was there first but Akane stood right next to him with her fishing pole.

"The ocean is best enjoyed alone ...don't you think?"

Akane gives him a gentle smile, "Don't worry, you won't hear a peep from me."

Sebastian huffs. The thunder and rain grew louder and stronger

Sebastian looks over at her. She was shivering. He sighs and holds his umbrella for her.

"Huh?"

"Get under here. I'm not gonna drag you to the clinic."

During the Flower Dance Festival, Akane asked Sebastian if she could dance with him but he immediately turned her down, saying that he doesn't dance. When Akane was whisked away by the other bachelors to dance, Sebastian felt a weird sensation in his heart. After the dances were over and people started to go home, he heads over to where Akane is

"Hey, will you honor me of a dance?" he asks, trying not to stutter.

"Oh what? I thought you didn't like dancing?" Akane replies, confused.

He smiles meekly, " Well, there's always a first of everything."

Akane grins and takes his offered hand, "Show me your dance moves, Sebastian!"

This was so fun to do!!! I really loved imagining scenes between my character and Sebastian in Stardew Valley HAHA feel free to insert your own characters! might do a part two! 🐸

damn well i've been meaning to send you a valleys sneak peek anyway so birds, stone.

A song finds its way into his head as rain begins to mist down again.

It comes to him from long ago, some winter he's forgotten, and it consists only of a clear, high voice, sharp as the bitter cold. Lover, come to find me in the dark, it croons in the back of his mind.

Nothing comes to him in the night, nothing but the whistle of the wind between buildings and cold water stinging his cheeks as it blows in under the eaves. He huddles down into his collar and bunches his sleeves around his fingers, drawing his cloak tighter. His breath heaves precious warmth into the air like steam rising from a kettle, but his body doesn't feel like it is boiling.

i've had to step back for a couple weeks while i finish my job and transition back into my horse stuff and all that, so just this week i've been really proud of the quality of writing that i'm producing. the hawkeye fic is a real solid fluff piece, and the one scene of valleys i've written has come out way better than i actually thought it would.

i'm also proud of myself for stepping away from valleys and coming back again. generally when i step away from my multichaps i end up accidentally leaving them for like two years.

😈 Is there anything you enjoy doing that you think your readers hate?

sad endings? hopelessness? mostly i guess because i personally hate that in books and fics....and yet i keep goddamn doing it lmfao. anyway there was a 'people roo made cry' club once so uh...sorry babes.

📚 Do you read your own fic?

haha. yeah i do. guilty. my bucky fic is a work of goddamn art and if you guys aren't gonna read it i'll do it myself. i also reread my pokemon fic a LOT it's my therapy fic lmfao.

💭 What is a headcanon you have about your own work?

uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. that it's the best body of work by any author in the zombies fandom. lmfaooooo.

no i guess. there's a running theme in my zombies future fics that are canon compliant of things going downhill a bit after school; tightening restrictions again, protests, etc etc. so i guess that's my headcanon in all my universes. things get hard for them again after high school. and no, i haven't published the fic that actually explores this yet.

i mean any of the disney ones, right. they're going to copyright strike us into the ground one day aren't they.
