BL recs (from any country) that don't have any s*x scenes? I'm too ace to enjoy them at all. Happy ending preferred, angst v welcome:)
BLs Without Sex Scenes
Oof, this is a hard one. Is a dead fish kiss okay? I do have a heat sorting on the spreadsheet of doom, and there are some with no kissing at all, but a dead fish kiss is in most of the HEA ones.
BLs with No Kisses
Tumblr media
21 Days Theory (Thailand, YouTube) - the only thing I didn't like about this pulp was the fact that they don't kiss, so... yeah, this is my first pick for you. Very YA first love angsty, fantastic queer rep and side characters. RECOMMENDED
Tumblr media
My Esports Genius Brother (China, Gaga?) - it's hella odd censored bromance but enjoyable. No real angst tho.
Tumblr media
HIStory My Hero (Taiwan, Viki) - basically a BL with no sex or kissing, but also body-swap so is it BL? I can't remember the end but I think it's happy?
Tumblr media
Silhouette of Your Voice AKA Hidamari ga Kikoeru (Japan, ????) - this 2017 yaoi adaptation is a full on BL just no kissing at all. The source manga (I Hear the Sunspot) is a favorite of mine and the casting was decent. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for you (but not in general). Grey only.
Tumblr media
Love of Siam (Thailand, ????) ALL THE ANGST, I'm pretty sure the most they do is hug, I could be v wrong though because too sad for me to ever rewatch. Very formative to the Thai BL industry.
Tumblr media
The Lover (BL cut) (Korea ????) sometimes you can find the BL cut on YT, it has slapstick comedic sexualized moments that are maybe a little homophobic (or something), no actual sex or kissing, but no angst at all. (Korea's working some shizz out with this early offering.)
Kabe Koji AKA Kabesaa Doujin Sakka no Neko Yashiki-kun wa Shounin Yokkyuu wo Kojirasete iru (Japan, Viki) - I watched this and I was excited about it before it aired, but I seem to have expunged it from my memory and kept no screen caps in annoyance, so that's all I got.
Tumblr media
Love in Spring AKA Spring of Crush (Korea, ????) - a crossdressing historical that flew utterly under the radar. I decided it just wasn't really BL, but it has BL aspects and it's kinda a little queer... or something. Grey only.
Evening Cafe (Thai pulp, YouTube) - No heat and no kisses, but a decent lead pair, about a boy who works in a cafe and the new employee who has a crush on him. That’s it, that's the whole story.
A Shoulder to Cry On (Korea, Viki) - Has no kissing and many people found it really good as @isisanna-blog reminded me, thank you). It certainly has ALL THE ANGST. (I did not like it at all, but I'm a terrible judge of this kind of BL.)
What Did You Eat Yesterday? (Japan ???) - this is such a lovely show, very warm and comforting and slice of life. There is very little angst, they too old for that shit, but little to no sexual content either. It's very warm and loving. A safe extremely yet queer show - and oh boy do we not get many of those. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Censored Bromances
Tumblr media
So No Kisses (TM) for the gays but the hets might do stuff I didn't pay attention to. All these from China. Some happy, most not.
The Untamed
Word of Honor
Guardian
SCI Mysteries
Stay With Me AKA Addicted 2.0 (I never watched this so there may be rough play)
Mr CEO Falling in Love With Me
The Fairy Fox
Youth in the Breeze
Precise Shot
Advance Bravely
His Cat AKA His Cat Boyfriend
The Male Queen: Han Zi Gao
The "Ghost Boyfriend" series
Past Youth
I Go To School Not By Bus (Hong Kong short)
Recommended Shorts with no kisses, but cute & fun
Tumblr media
The 8.2 Second Rule (Japan YouTube)
One Last Order (Korea, Gaga)
Love Advisor (Thailand, YouTube)
BLs with Dead Fish Kisses (maybe? only one, if any)
Tumblr media
His the series: I Didn't Think I Would Fall In Love (Japan ????) - (NOT His the movie) this one has all the angst you could want in your whole life. ALL OF IT. Japan wins at emo, it's their THING.
Tumblr media
Cherry Magic AKA 30 Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard AKA 30-sai made Dotei Da to Mahotsukai ni Nareru rashii AKA Cheri Maho (Japan ????) - there's sort of some bed tussling and implied sex but you could imagine them just being snuggles for the mains, the sides have dead fish kiss. In general there's some angst but not much. It's fluffy and great. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Bonus: overt ace representation for one of the side characters.
Tumblr media
Meow Ears Up (Thailand Viki) - sides may kiss? I enjoyed this pulp especially at the start, the premise is fun. I think my biggest complaint was lack of kissing.
Tumblr media
My Love Mix Up AKA Kieta Hatsukoi (Japan Viki), a case could be made for a demi seme in this BL. So much frenetic angst around bisexual identity crisis. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Tumblr media
My Ride (Thailand Gaga) - my favorite Thai BL pulp the sides have a good kiss and the mains do kiss but it's v dead fish, not at all sexual, and it comes at the very end. Otherwise extremely chaste, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this BL, queer and complex and engaging.
Tumblr media
I Want to See Only You AKA Kimi no Koto Dake Mite Itai (Japan ????) - This is a beautiful piece of cinema well acted, about two boys who are opposite personalities and grew up together. The only kiss is the one pictured above, v dead fish. Full review here.
Nobleman Ryu's Wedding (Korea WeTV) - 12th Night goes BL in this cross dressing historical that ended up feeling like a Cinderfella fairy tale, lightly dramatic and utterly charming. Full review. There is one dead fishy kiss at the end but it's otherwise aggressively pure.
If you like this last style of KBL (with a kiss at the end being okay, I have quite a few more to recommend). Until 2022, most KBLs only had one dead fish kiss in them, so you are pretty safe with pre 2022 KBLs. They tend to be quite chaste and de-sexualized. Other good examples: Wish You, Light on Me.
That's all folx.
Some of the above I may be misremembering (since I don't rewatch this kind of BL and my memory is shit). And I may have forgotten some too, so I hope comments with jump in.
Others to consider:

Saw another "Keanu is a zionist" post with no supporting evidence or citing and this annoyed me so I'm making a post about it. To preface, this is all in good faith and to educate.
Zionism is, to be put simply, the belief that Israel has a right to make their own homeland, to create a "place for all jews" by clearing out the native population and culture. As Israel is committing a genocide, it is perfectly acceptable for those supporting Israel's genocide of the Palestinian people to be labeled a zionist.
Specifically we are going to be talking about Keanu Reeves and his involvement with the zionist company Paramount, who expressed their explicit support of Israel and has not issued another statement changing their stance as far as I am aware. I will also be adding film making information as needed.
To start off, we only know of two examples of Reeves interacting with people who have a connection to Israel. He has not stated his stance on any social or political movement, full stop. The first of two such instances is his weapons trainer for John Wick 2, who was hired by the producers specifically. And the second is his attending of a party in 2014 by producer Arnon Milchan, who you may know from movies like; Fight Club, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, the Chipmunks sequels, and more. At this party Reeves was photographed speaking to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. [image description in alt]
Tumblr media
This photo is the only information we have on this party and their interactions. Here is an article gossip mag MalibuTimes released on it. This article also goes to say that Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife made sure to interact with multiple actors- in fact the photo they used for this article is them posing with James Caan.
Seeing as this appears to be their only known interaction and Reeves has been photographed candid and not posed, it is a fair assumption to say they aren't friends catching up. On the film/actor side of things, parties like this are a fantastic way to network within the industry. Arnon Milchan is a well known name in producing movies with a long history and it would not be a smart move to decline or spur his invitation.
Now back to Paramount and Sonic 3, as is our main discussion. Paramount this last October in response to the Oct. 7th bombing announced that they stand with and support Israel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As you should know by now, six months later, Israel has far gone past "defending itself" as some may claim it has a right to do, and firmly and undeniably into genocide. In this time Paramount has doubled down on their support, donating large sums of money to Israeli based charities and military. In their new Sonic spin off series, Knuckles, one of the human characters openly supports Israel and practices a form of martial arts invented by the Israeli armed forces.
When it comes to Sonic 3 and staff and cast involvement, a little more context is needed. Filmmaking takes a long time and a lot of hard work. The script needs to be written before the cast can audition and then rehearsals, prop design, set and location set up, rigging and prepping Sonic character stand ins for their CGI coverups, and more all need to be done before filming can ever start. According to Collider this last summer Sonic 3 was set to start filming in August of 2023; meaning that cast had been hired months before that. Contracts for movies from big studios like Paramount or Disney often include Non Disclosure Agreements so that staff members wont leak anything before its ready and/or a legally binding punishment should a leak happen. We only found out Reeves is playing Shadow the Hedgehog this last week, and filming has completed earlier this month according to ScreenRant who cited James Marsden for that confirmation. Meaning that Keanu has been done for a little while now, if he was only in booth voice acting rather than some combination of on set and in booth. Depending on the NDA the agreement can last for years, according to BrewerLog Attorney's Office the average amount of time a NDA lasts is 1-5 years and depends heavily on what is outlined and what information the business in question wants to be kept secret.
Reeves nor his PR team has yet (as of 4/28/24) to make any statement regarding his role of Shadow the Hedgehog in the upcoming film, but that's the norm for him. Keanu Reeves rather rarely does interviews or public outspeak; he doesn't even make a statement or announce when donating or setting up regular funding to charities in the past.
To wrap things up there simply isn't enough to say Keanu is a zionist. Circumstantial at best, and heavily assumptionist and bad faith at worst. If in the future there is confirmation that Keanu purposefully or willingly sides, supports, or is politically aligned with anything to do with Israel and their genocide of the Palestinian people and their destruction of Gaza Strip then I will absolutely change my tune here. But there's ACTUAL people who are vocal about their support of genocide who I see get no negative feedback. Jerry Seinfeld openly support and even donates to Israel- why say nothing about him? Or Gal Godou. I have literally seen zero posts about either of them.
TLDR; Keanu isn't a zionist, and explaining why

I watched Across The Spiderverse yesterday, here are my two(hundred) cents!
This will just be a lot of me gushing about how much I love ATSV, no theories because I’m not smart enough for that 💀
ATSV SPOILERS!!
ATSV SPOILERS!!
Alright, let’s get into it. (These are in no particular order and I prob forgot a lot of stuff)
Am I the only one who thought Hobie was a whole ass adult? Like he looks at least 20 am i crazy? (Keep in mind I have no prior comic knowledge sorry bout that 💀)
THE ANIMATION STYLES!!! Omfg they were so good, like the occasional live action elements, the LEGO UNIVERSE, Hobie’s whole thing, it’s all just so fucking cool!! Especially the comic book textures with like the shading and rough line art it’s all just so fun to look at
I kinda hate Miguel but I gotta be honest he is SUCH A GOOD ANTAGONIST. Like he has good intentions (I think) but goes way overboard due to past memories. He isn’t truly evil, he just projects all of his past mistakes onto Miles. He is just barely in the ‘I don’t like you’ category for me but what he did to Miles was wack so he’s staying there.
If I had to pick a favorite, it would be Spider Punk. I’m just a sucker for cool characterization and ‘mess shit up’ people. His big brother dynamic with Miles is just so fucking fun dude. I also just like listening to his voice, bravo to Daniel Kaluuya, he did a great job. Also I heard that just Hobie’s animation alone took about 2 years to do (could be lies)
Pavitr was 🤏this close to being my favorite. If he got more screen time he defo would’ve been my number one, because HOLY SHIT he is the silliest mfer I’ve ever seen. I love the detail on his suit and when he uses his bangles as like yo-yos. And his banter with the other three was just so cute. Like when he went ‘Another easy win for Spider-Man-‘ and everything fucking explodes, I was cracking up 😭😭
The marketing and like almost non-existent foreshadowing for the Spot being one of the main antagonists was so genius!! Like the trailers painted him as just a random guy Miles fought, because that’s how he saw him! As just another d-list villain!! Also The Spot’s lines are so funny dude, and his voice-acting, like the pinnacle of Average Joe™ but he also shares a VA with Ash from Fantastic Mr Fox soooo
I SAW 20 SECONDS OF SUN SPIDER AND I AM BEGGING FOR MORE she’s so fun
In the scene where Gwen n Miles are sitting together upside down, there’s a shot where they are just tiny in the corner and it’s just the whole cityscape, and it is one of my favorite shots in the whole movie, it was so fucking beautiful. The two are small and upside down to show how ostracized and different they feel from the rest of society. (because they are) But, a minute later, it flips so that the two are sitting right side up while the cityscape is upside down, which symbolizes their bond and how they find solace in each other.
I love how the background fades and melts as Gwen is having the confrontation with her Dad near the end. I can’t remember any specifics because it’s been two days since I saw it, but it was so telling how everything melded together except Gwen and her Father because that’s all Gwen could think about.
I thought the movie was PG but they cursed at least like three times so that’s fun
MILES WITH BRAIDS 😍😍 honestly I can’t tell which style I like more, they both match each version’s demeanor so well.
The way I could immediately tell in earth-42 at the end that something was up with Uncle Aaron. But like, aside from the fact that he was alive 💀. His face was constantly casted in shadow with his eyes highlighted, if I remember correctly I think they were purple tinted as well? These not-so-subtle art choices were so beautifully crafted to give me just the right sense of unease.
I really wished they did more with Jessica Drew. I just feel like she was kind of a blank slate with no truly discerning personality. I did like her internal conflict with following Miguel’s orders and doing what’s right. I really hope she has a larger role in Beyond or I’ll be sad.
The themes of teenage relationships are so fucking powerful in this movie and I think that’s beautiful. Neither Miguel nor Jessica supported Miles, or even Gwen. All of their comfort came from each other. Hobie, Pavitr, Gwen, and Miles’s bond is so strong because they are all truly there for each other.
I am so disappointed that we didn’t see any Spider Noir. He was one of my faves in the first movie 😭
Hobie + Pavitr has gotta be one of my favorite duos. Especially in Hobie’s debut scene where they’re roughhousing, their dynamic is just so cute. I’ve seen people ship them and I’m not against it, I just can’t see Hobie as anything more than a big brother tbh
That’s all that comes to mind right now, hope you enjoyed my word vomit. I have so much more stuff to say but that will need a rewatch, I’m gonna go to bed

Transcript:
strange youth
long time coming, this post is....... was.... why am i talking like yoda now?
so, i'm really excited to be writing here. not really sure what i'm going to write about yet but that's what makes it exciting. i guess i can start with, it's been a wild month, to say the least. "life is a daring adventure or nothing at all". is there really more to say about that than that? ok, well one more thing... human beings are no less respectable when they are at their most vulnerable. and that's why i try to have faith in people.
right now, it's about 12:30am - we landed here in Hamburg, Germany about 10 hours ago. all i've done is sleep, watch movies and "glaze" my hair. i'm trying not to dye it at all this summer besides right before the honda civic tour. i like the way the colors fade and how strung out i start to look with my hair turning all sorts of greenish yellow. it's even better when i don't wear any make-up out. what a sight. anyways, i'm tired and at the same time completely restless. and in, what some people would call, a "desperate need" for a shower. and what's most exciting is that my face wash spilled out into the rest of my toiletry bag. there's still a little left though.  on the flight over, i read half of a new book i've started called Wonderland Avenue. it's by Danny Sugerman, in case you're interested, who happens to be my voice doctors' brother. NEATO! the author of this book not only met and hung around The Doors as a young kid around the age of 13 ... but by the time he was out of his teens he was already managing them AND Iggy Pop. (if you aren't aware of these artists, get to googling). so yeah, couldn't put that book down until finally i had to... cause me and jeremy wanted to watch Shutter Island on the plane tv's. that's right, folks, business class seats have an assortment of movies available to you on little personal tv's. what a bunch of snobs we must be! by the time we were done with that movie we realized we still weren't tired so we watched Fantastic Mr. Fox (directed by Wes Anderson, an absolute genius)... and then as jeremy fell asleep i proceeded to doodle in my journal and listen to Nirvana's 'Incesticide', then Mumford and Sons' 'Sigh No More'. it was a good flight. clearly, i got a lot of things accomplished.
again, i'm still just sitting here in my hotel room letting the orange glaze sit in my hair until i finally give in to a shower. i didn't even have enough orange left to cover my full head, so just get over it when you see me and i look like a hot mess.
maybe now is a good place and time to state my opinion on our being everywhere at the same time. seems like we've got just about every magazine covered this month, people are playing our songs and i'm singing on B.o.B's song and it's just crazy all the time. i do love it... it's a lot of fun to work hard and see your work all around you. yet at the same time, there are still large number of people that i don't think will ever get it. the SPIN article (you know, the cover one) that was just printed about us doesn't really seem to say anything ABOUT us as a band. and it seems that in most cases writers simply enjoy looking at us and exclaiming - like they've discovered something huge - "THEY'RE YOUNG!" or of course there's always, "THEY'RE CHRISTIANS"... or "THEY DON'T SHOOT UP IN THE BACK OF THE BUS!" what is this the 80's? is it really that sensational that we aren't the second coming of Motley Crue? does our music suggest that we should be acting otherwise? listen, i'm not trying to sit here and wreck the writer from SPIN. i'm sure it's hard to get a handle on any band within the amount of time given to capture "our story". maybe reading articles about us just gets a little monotonous, that's all. oh and i'm not actually friends with McLovin or Miley. awkward turtle.
and on a slightly different tip, it's my opinion that anyone who is coming onto our band looking for controversy is completely missing the point. the point isn't in the intent of controversy, the point is that there is no way around it. as people, aren't we all bursting at the seams with conflict and controversy? the point of our music is that there are human hearts in it. because anyone knows that eventually, someone will find something on you. if you don't do drugs, you probably have another addiction. even innocent. we could stop looking for the wrongs and realize that they're inevitable on the way to something more meaningful. i'm not totally preaching here. talking to myself as well, in case you wondered. who knows? maybe i really am just bored with giving music journalists the benefit of the doubt. like they're really gonna let people know what we would want to tell them. yet still, i want to have faith in people. and anyways, what WOULD we want to tell people if we had that much space to write about ourselves? it would probably end up just the same. does it ever bug you guys? do you ever feel like some people are just missing it?
when you come to a show do you feel the same thing that i feel when i'm on that stage? i mean, i know you're not standing on the stage... but surely you can feel the same energy that i'm feeling, to some degree. it's so much more powerful than all the trivial nonsense that people chalk our band up to be. it means something great and it feels empowering. it's the grace of knowing that we can all totally suck and be a little messed up and then stand in a room with thousands of other people who are exactly the same way, no matter how dressed up they look on the outside, and we can be broken all the same.
man, what have i gone and spouted off about now? sorry for such a long winded, self-serving type of post.  i'm ready to wash this crap out of my hair and try to sleep til the show tomorrow.  we are actually sharing the stage with The Get Up Kids, Hot Water Music and Dropkick Murphy's tomorrow. should be a good one!

listen, i have been critical on kids movies in the past, and i do not think a kids film needs to be good to children and suffer that by being bad to adults. i think their is a middle ground, films like megamind and fantastic mr fox, two solid movies that any age fully immerse themselves into.
i do not think this movie did that for a lot of adults, and this is deemed a fast paced, colour filled, rushed mess of a film. however. i am incredibly biased.
alas, i sat through this entire film with the widest grin on my face, yes, i was won over by the easter eggs through callbacks, outfits, characters and the detailing in to all the backgrounds that made me constantly remember my time growing up watching and playing around this franchise. i loved the colours, animation and character design and thought it was done so well and beautifully that i kept pointing out the detailing and textures within the skin and hair. i loved jack blacks performance as bowser as, not like donkey kong (voiced by seth rogan), it was not just jack black playing bowser, he became that role and he became this playful but overall quite terrifying character. i loved that despite bowsers goal in trying to marry the princess, he was still this evil, powerful being, during the snap at the wedding he became quite scary, and my little sister sat right besides me was loving it.
i thought chris prat’s performance was not as bad as anticipated, i enjoyed the dynamic between him and luigi and his family from brooklyn. i loved the advert they made and how that continues to call back to all the things we know about the franchise. on surface level, for adult viewing, this is not a perfect movie. the pacing is so fast you do not get a second to care or feel anything for a lot of the scenes and emotions portrayed. sometimes i wish they held on moments more, added a few more lines and pushed a more emotional impact from this film. but i still loved it, i really did. unlike sonic, which is the worst movie from game i have ever fucking seen. i loved this film. but at the end of the day, thats because i love mario and the franchise has been so close to me for the longest time. seeing that world i immersed myself in for so much of my youth, it was nice to see this full recognised, beautifully animated world of the place i loved.
my final note is that i hope one day studios realise that children aren’t completely stupid and pacing does not have to be so fast to make a good movie for them. yes this was a money grab film, but i really do think the voice actors had a lot of fun with it and i sure had a lot of fun watching it.

"Zootopia" (2016)
Let's get one thing out of the way first: "Zootopia" is a treat to watch. Their animation team received quite a bit of praise in wake of its release, and it's extremely deserved. All the different terrains they travel through in "Zootopia" are imaginative, clever, and well-considered. The visual jokes are top notch, and the bits with the sloth DMV and the timber wolves are a hoot.
I think there's a lot to like about the story here, too, and it's not a given that I'd say that since I figured out the twist halfway through. There are important lessons about not painting with too broad a brush, and we see the protagonist, Judy Hopps, on both sides of the coin. She's constantly striving to earn respect within her department despite being a small bunny, but she is also just unsure enough about foxes that it sets up a crushing conflict with her new nuisance-turned-friend, Nick Wilde. Tolerance, forgiveness, and understanding are all as important to this movie as basic heroism, and it deserves praise for that.
In short, it looks fantastic, touches on important life themes not always glimpsed in Disney movies, and has its fair share of humor as well. So… why did "Zootopia" sometimes struggle to hold my attention and ultimately fall in the middle of the pack of my rankings?
It's hard to say. This may just one of those good, old-fashioned subjective opinions. While I enjoyed the story from a thousand-foot view, the execution of it was not super-duper compelling. It wasn't bad by any stretch -- far from it -- but something was missing with the characters. Maybe part of it is that I don't find Jason Bateman as funny as I did when he was on "Arrested Development," though he did a good job with Nick's indignant turn on Judy. And if the the second top-billing isn't quite delivering the goods, then the lead has to crush it, and Ginnifer Goodwin as Judy just wasn't it. Again: not objectionable! Just not capital-g Good. The side characters mostly didn't do it for me, either, and while she only popped up occasionally, Shakira was just distracting. It takes you out of the movie to have her gazelle character pop up on the news and just… be Shakira.
So this one was tough for me because I know how much some people like "Zootopia." Hell, it won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film and this wasn't a "Brave" situation where people watched with raised eyebrows (yes, "Wreck-It Ralph" clearly should have won, why do you ask). But I can't pretend like something was better than I thought. That's OK, too! Taste just varies. So it goes.

Ohhhh The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar
it made my heart melt. it was wonderful it was amazing.
The second they hit me with the 1:33:1 aspect ratio and grainy camera quality they HAD ME. Believe it or not I have not seen many Wes Anderson movies nor did I realise this was very typical of his style. I've seen his Fantastic Mr. Fox movie but I just wasn't aware of his cinematic style. But I'm so pleased to be seeing this aspect ratio and camera quality still in-use! I've always thought about how HD and fullscreen simply cannot work for this type of stuff. Perhaps it can be done, but it's just such a simple way of setting the tone throughout the entire thing, even if it's so easy.
The sets were amazing and gorgeous! Henry's house and the hospital stuck out to me the most and often came out looking almost exactly how I saw it in my head!!
Not to mention, the fact we got Cumberbatch for this one?? *British screaming 🥰*
What I love about Henry Sugar is the piles and piles of frame narratives it has going on- I've always had an attachment to them because for me they instantly make the story so much more immersive. It gets trippy once you realise it's an actor, playing an actor, playing a story, who is telling you a story, inside of a story, and sometimes even- inside of a story. It's a really cool thing that could only be done with the medium of film.
Perhaps one thing I feel it missed was there was not really enough focus on Henry? The original story spends a lot more time describing his disappointment with life, how his boredom sends him to the library, and the long long process of training with the candle, whereas the short film sort of montage-ified it. It wasn't a huge loss, however, and every other aspect I loved immensely.
And for my own personal touch, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar has been my favourite Dahl story for many years! I was amazed when I discovered he wrote books for adolescents and adults, too. And I'm very glad to see more attention being laid to those stories (especially Hitchhiker!) So, yeah. I had a very cosy time with this production, it was so lovely and thank you very much for the nostalgia food.

morse being queer (and other commentary) pt 2:
season 1, episode 2, “Fugue”:
- morse looking over his shoulder to look at jakes
- no need to look morse up and down like that, jakes 🤨
- i don’t like crime scenes that don’t include morse and debryn speaking to each other this is bullshit
- this little husband man of the dead woman deserves better but he looks like one of the farmers from Fantastic Mr. Fox
- morse and jakes are absolutely insane for talking to each other like that and not getting in a physical fight
- morse correcting jakes’ italian pronunciation is insane.
- “not as if anybody NORMAL would think to look there...” jakes shut ur bitchass up🤨
- morse asking immediately for debryn when he gets to the second crime scene
- “i presume you mean anything suspicious?”
- debryn READ him
- debryn is so...... if i speak. 😧
- morse is sooo awk around jakes i’m embarrassed
- this freaky little guy playing piano not being the murderer is also insane of the writers i was so convinced it was him
- i want a show that is all debryn
- it’s just that debryn is on the same level of knowledge as morse is except morse is like a genius in arts and debryn is a genius in sciences and it’s just that they compliment each other so well it makes me ill
- jakes is so petty
- jakes is also a fucking snitch to the PRESS no less
- morse needs to be a better friend to strange
- thursday’s family is the only thing i care about
- bright is ALSO a petty motherfucker
- i wish this episode was more gay i’m tapping my foot waiting for smth gay to happen 😔😔
- the fake doctor is soooooo annoying
- morse is sooo pretty when he relaxes his face
- the gay part of this episode is that the killer is down bad for morse
- “look alive, morse. it’s the competition.”
- jakes fr wants morse to know he also hates the fake doctor
- “something you should see, sir. you too, morse.”
- “looks like you’ve got an admirer.”🤨
- who, jakes? you?
- no but fr that’s the only time we’ve seen jakes actually care about smth having to do with morse
- i hate to tell this mother but those are NOT sandals they’re mary janes
- jakes makes fun of morse a lot for someone who hangs on every word he says during cases 🤨🤨
- “one bloody misfit talking to another.”
- just call morse a slur and GO, jakes
- we all know what it means when a killer stabs his victims 😏
- ^not funny
- this is the only man i’ve ever seen behave realistically when stabbed
- strange is such a real one do NOT hmu
- debryn is so... IF I SPEAK 😧😧
- debryn is the only one who consistently and genuinely cares about morse
- no need to stand so close to his face while talking about how worried u are about him dying, debryn
- “you sure you’re fit for duty?”
- 🤨🤨🤨🤨🤨
- bit late to care about his well being now jakes
- prolly just thinking about how good morse looks in his shirt
- this killer is gayyyyy!!!!!!!!!!
- “it suits him to have you alive” 🤨🤨
- ELABORATE on that.
- jakes subtly letting morse walk in the church before him just like how more subtly let jakes enter the train car before him
- let ME elaborate: it’s morse’s crime scene both times, but morse doesn’t like looking at dead bodies. he knows jakes doesn’t mind and jakes knows morse is uncomfortable, so they switch the order they’re walking in so jakes will get in the train car first and shield the body from morse. in the church, jakes humbles himself and lets morse walk in first because they beat the deadline. there won’t be a dead body and jakes wants morse to get the credit for the discovery of the girl so he steps aside to ensure morse enters first
- are you confused who you ship now? yeah, me too😔
- STRANGE IS SO REALLLLLL
- let me marry him.
- morse turned around SO QUICK WHEN HE WALKED IN IM CACKLING
- even jakes is struggling to look at the body he keeps turning to look at morse 😕😕
- them randomly bringing the weird husband back in for no reason is crazy
- MRS. THURSDAY IS SO FUCKING REAL SHE MAKES ME WANNA CRY
- thursday using his own coat instead of morse’s to lay over him makes me wanna break down
- i know hes looking at the wall of pictures but the director perfectly framing jakes’ face for morse to look at is insane
- jakes out here backing up morse’s theories all of a sudden 🤨🤨
- jakes kicking down a door is 😧😧
- morse getting a little embarrassed talking to jakes about his choir 😔
- why do bad guys always have to monologue
- thursday could have been dead five times over by the time this guy gets done talking
- we get it ur obsessed w morse 🙄🙄
- morse is insane for tackling two fighting men while on a rooftop that could have been the worst mistake of his whole career
- “to be clever is to be alone.”
- can u stfu?????? goddam
- everyone is so mean to him
- i see nothing but myself in morse it makes me so sick.
- morse crying here seems so random but it’s so real i can’t handle it
- FUCK OXFORD IS SO PRETTY
- thursday’s closing speech is something that is so... i’ll cry.

Danger! Danger! Death the Crisis! Dangerous Zombie! Our next round sees us taking on a zombie horde! Likely a nod to the Left 4 Dead series or Capcom's failed multiplayer experience Umbrella Corps. Mmmmm... or perhaps because Bandai, it's a nod to Splatterhouse?
That there slippery fox is leading us down a very interesting trail, that's for sure. I sure hope that it keeps its momentum going strong.
Spoilers, I guess...
-Taira-san... :(
-I guess keeping record of your descent into toxic gamerism would be a good thing to do if they ever find you dead.
-Tsumuri, you are immensely creepy in the best way, I love you.
-Only the Jamato, huh?
-They ate him.
-Poor Keiwa.
-Wow, the Sonozakis would be envious of this amount of real estate.
-Who you lookin' for, Ace?
-Yeah, Trust Last is fantastic. I wanna hear the full version so much.
-Oh... static...
-Mr. Ginpen is gone...
-Neon-chan!
-I wonder... could anybody who was involved with the production of the first episode of the original 1971 series, anybody at all, could they have predicted we'd reach this point?
-NEON AND ACE HOLY FUCK
-The two most famous human beings in the world, together on camera!
-Oh shit, Da-Pan!
-"Streaming your escape attempts?"
-Honey, cats don't do too hot
-Oh shit, the bodyguard dudes.
-Awww, they're starstruck :)
-These guys seem like really fun side characters, hope they stick around
-Zombies!
-Oh my god, video game graphics.
-Oh wow, there's a lot to these games.
-I wonder if they're trying to encourage kids to try and play with these rules?
-I see there's a lot of emphasis on playing fair this round.
-Gambling in full view of Miss Tsumuri, huh?
-I love all the poses!
-Neon's prolonged one is adorable btw
-I love the look of this man's shield.
-Seems like we're all ready!
-Oooooh, and Buffa draws first blood!
-Meanwhile Mr. Tycoon's doing a great job helping civilians, what a guy!
-Oh shit, the boost!
-Nago, you don't have to be so catlike!
Da-Paan: Nobody's stupid enough to help you! Geats: immediately helps her
-You should've gone for the head.
-Man, I love the use of the environment, it's so cool.
-Poor Nago.
-STRAIGHT UP SNATCHED IT
-Hello Mary!
-You seem like a pretty cool guy.
-PAY TO WIN HLJK:KJ
-Costumes, of course!
-"Typical rich people... you are not an EPIC PUBG GAMER LIKE ME, WHO SPENT LIKE 6 HOURS FOR A PAIR OF JEANS!"
-These characters are so funny hjkhgj
-Gotta meet that prince!
-"No fighting :c"
-"Sorry Keiwa, we're all rivals."
-Yep. This is a proper Death Game story.
-I wonder how much money this DGP swag goes for on Premium Bandai? Maybe... 20,000 yen? 400,000? A kidney?
-I see...
-This is fun. I really love these kinds of "death game" stories, there's so much to the way characters are written and how
-To create our ideal world.
-The second wave comes.
-Da-Paan with the assist!
-I see the Pipe Bonk strat has been taken up by Buffa!
-What's this? Ace Ukiyo's just standing around! Oh, and he hops in! Here comes the Zombie Raise Buckle! Gotta say folks, this look is absolutely working for him!
-Ready! Fight!
-Jesus Christ man, what the hell
-Just gonna shoot a girl in the back like that?
-Gotta say, the zombie look is absolutely workin' for Geats.
-I love the brutality behind this weapon too.
-Yep, this is absolutely a Splatterhouse reference.
-I see Da-Paan's score means nothing to him.
-Oooooh, dodging with the revolve!
-Y'know Sumida, you really set my expectations low, but goddamn.
-Oh shit
-Got run down, and your dreams with you?
-Naturally, you gotta make the entire world suffer alongside you!
-You're quite a piece of work, huh man? Monokuma lookin' ass.
-Oh man, we're doing a Sengoku thing again, huh?
-Man...
-Oh shit, Neon
-Damn girl, you waited
-So we have a chance.
-You die in the game, you die in real life. Couldn't have seen that coming, huh?
-Ohhhhhhh, Na-Go's got the Boost Buckle next episode!
-Hell yeah, gurl! Get it!
-Eagerly anticipating our next wave.

Two things happened this week that have led to this somewhat unexpected choice for a SPT: yesterday was Dick Van Dyke's 97th birthday. From his role as Rob Petrie on the (still charming and funny) Dick Van Dyke Show to this album of covers that is great for parties, Van Dyke is a treasure. The second thing was that my wife and I finally got COVID which meant we were stuck on the couch for much of the last few days, streaming an awful lot of television. For reasons I can't articulate, my illness-raddled body wanted to watch Mary Poppins. A delight. Just a movie of fun. Every single one of the Sherman Brothers' songs are fantastic (except for the one about banking that you probably forgot existed. It's funny, but not a toe-tapper.) Julie Andrews is fantastic, a beautiful singer, and very, very dry. Dick Van Dyke's accent is derided, but it's perfectly cartoony and his physical performance is unparalleled. Glynis Johns and David Tomlinson as Mr. and Mrs. Banks are ever so British. There are some special effects in here where you'll say, "Oh, that looks good for 1964!" and some where you'll say, "I have no idea how they did that one." I know you've probably seen this movie. But whether it's the Mary/Bert subtext or the detail of the fox being hunted being Irish, I bet there are some details you've missed. Poppins is not a Christmas movie (if anything its about the end of winter into spring) but whether it's the message of family or love over money, there's something that makes this movie feel right for this time of year. Plus, the bridge of "Feed the Birds" has this part that will never fail to give me chills.  -- I would like to know what your favorite piece of media to come out of 2022 was. Movie? TV Show? Book? Song? Food? Whatever! I plan on sharing a list of our readers' favorite things at the start of 2023, and this is your chance to be a part of it! Just fill out this super short form and you're a part of the official SPT 2022 Going Away Celebration! --

We love a word game here at SPT HQ. Tumbleword is a new fun one that gives a few different tools to try and create the largest number of words using the fewest number of moves. It's deceptively simple, but surprisingly tough. Sorry/enjoy!

wip wednesday
hi guys i was tagged by my fantastic mr. fox @eddiediazes (hey bud ily). here is my new wip, which is summing up to be 8k of stupid so far. this is what happens when you take yourself a wee bit too seriously. also this is one of my favorite parts, so if this ever does see the light of day just forget it
“Okay, hold on,” Eddie stated, and then he crouched down and took Buck into a fireman’s hold. Buck screeched and closed his eyes so he didn’t stare at Eddie’s ass. “Unsafe behavior,” he mumbled, grabbing at Eddie’s thighs. Eddie barely trembled beneath him.  So Eddie crouched down and picked him up, but the problem was that when someone has knocked the fuck out, their head didn’t exactly get with the program.  So Buck’s head was kind of— lolling — with the activity, and Eddie picked him and essentially smacked him into the doorjamb, and well that fucking woke him up real quick.  “Ohmygod Buck,” Eddie stuttered, “was that your face?”   “I’m dead,” Buck mumbled, clutching his aching nose. “You fucking killed me.”   “Buddy I am so fucking sorry,” he said, trying to lean over and look Buck in the face, but the fucker was still holding him, so they were just spinning in circles.   “I’m getting dizzy,” he said, trying to hold onto Eddie with one hand and his nose with the other.  “Okay, I’m going to put you down,” he said, but then he just put Buck down on the hardwood floor and Buck just laid there. “Your nose is bleeding,” Eddie said, staring at him with wide eyes.   “It’s spinal fluid from a brain bleed. I’m going to be pronounced dead in 15 seconds. I don’t have a will. Tell my sister I love her.” “Buck shut the hell up.” He grabbed his nose to stop the bleeding, which hurt, so Buck smacked his hand. “I’m going to sleep here,” he mumbled, his eyes already falling asleep. “Revolutionary.”
and they *big deep breath* were neighbors.
im tagging @fallingthorns and @sibylsleaves and @mmtions but ofc if you don’t want to then dont

💙Smoshblr December Asks Day 2💛
What are your top 3 favourite movies?
And how easily would your friends (or ppl you work with) be able to guess it was you, based on them?
absolutely love these questions, thank u!! gonna speed thru em to keep up :>
my number 1 has got to be fantastic mr fox, and i think it's pretty easy for my friends to guess since i love . orange . and just that Warm vibe with a tinge of existentialism
my second is paprika! i love weird shit! and specifically i love how dreams are captured here? the way the mystery unravels is SO thrilling and i love the soundtrack sooo much. the only downside is literally the ending, bc wtf HAHDHAJSH
third is la casa lobo (the wolf house)! one of the eeriest movies ever. the production is amazing, imagine stop motion with a Bunch of scotch tape and FULL ROOM sets, walls overpainted in every shot. i like its theme of how colonization brainwashes its colonies, i think it is super neat and is a topic i wish more movies explored!!

The Life Aquatic
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is Wes Anderson's most controversial film and his worst received when it comes to critics and audiences... and I do understand why. To start off the protagonist is played by Bill Murray, I have nothing against Bill Murray as a real life person but I haven't been impressed by one of his performances since Ghostbusters or Groundhog Day in the 80s and early 90s. Most of his performances especially in the 2000s feel very similar and his delivery is very repetitive, giving off the energy that he is bored and uninterested in the projects he's involved in. I felt this issue throughout this film as he was quite unengaging to watch and didn't have the charisma of an Owen Wilson. I also have problems with the main character overall, I don't believe he was given enough personal comeuppance after being such an arrogant and unlikable protagonist throughout, having scenes of unnecessary slurs against gay people was also quite uncomfortable and can't be excused by the time it was made as this is relatively new. The main character has his moments of realising he is in the wrong then gets Owen Wilson killed after which made it feel like his arc stagnated as after having a resolution the death happened, felt out of order.
Similar to Darjeeling limited this film is obviously the in-between period of Wes truly realising his style because this film for most of the runtime doesn't feel very Wes Anderson. The least Wes part and honestly weakest portion of this film is the pirate subplot and the action scenes. To start with this subplot didn't really link to the rest of the narrative and felt quite redundant as well as halting the pace, this is Wes' longest film and it definitely felt it. I really disliked the shootouts, the first one was incredibly unrealistic and stupid as Bill Murray takes on a whole band of pirates with machine guns and wins, I thought it was a dream sequence at first due to the distorted sound and overly unbelievable nature of the scene, pushing my suspension of disbelief to the limit. It was the exact same with the second shootout, even having Jeff Goldblum get shot point blank and not only survive but get up and run away.
A few random observations I had watching this were for one, Wes seems to mainly just write characters and especially protagonists that are rich and successful, they usually have a similar arc of accepting themselves or changing from being arrogant and letting go of their riches, finding what is truly important. Life Aquatic, Darjeeling, Royal Tenenbaums and arguably Fantastic Mr Fox could all fit into this. Also I do believe Wes' inner circle of actors limits his films uniqueness as no one brings there best performances, even an actor like Willam Defoe who can be excellent in films like the lighthouse seems one note in this.
One thing I really enjoyed and wanted more of was the underwater sequences, they were refreshing and colourful and the stop motion was beautiful. I wasn't a fan of the CGI pink fish but they were used sparingly. I also loved the framing of the story as a documentary and the opening and ending scene being premier. And obviously the best part of this movie was the set design of the ship itself, just so fun and creative. Overall this is probably Wes Anderson's weakest but still some entertaining and creative elements.

Wes Anderson returns with The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar!
Tumblr media
Although it’s only 39 minutes in length, do not be fooled. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar has immense attention to detail on the highest level. Based on the Roald Dahl short story of the same name, we see Benedict Cumberbatch at the forefront. Cumberbatch plays a rich man who tries to copy the ability of a guru who can somehow see without using his eyes. Henry tries to learn this idea so that he can win bets. This is certainly a quirky concept indeed, and maybe one that only someone like Wes Anderson can pull off. Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, Richard Ayoade and Sir Ben Kingsley round out another delightful Wes Anderson cast. When you think about the best directors, a lot of them have a similar theme in common. That commonality is that all of their films have a distinct feel and style. It sounds simple, but it's actually quite an impressive achievement. When you look at the work of say Guillermo del Toro or even Quentin Tarantino you can recognise their style almost instantly. These directors always bring their classic trademarks to each of their many projects. Another “fantastic” director, who does this with some of the most fascinating sets you ever is of course Wes Anderson. From The Darjeeling Limited through to The Grand Budapest Hotel, his colourful and delicate cinematography has become legendary. Some of his other trademarks include a huge cast (Where some will just feature as cameos) combined with a dry sense of humour. His movies feel like stepping into an art exhibition, and each release is an event. All of this brings us to his latest release, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. https://youtu.be/4RdncisZ_QA?si=lq954z1qJRDzZM8V I really can’t wait to see this, because like I mentioned earlier every Anderson movie is an event, you can pause each frame and find an immense amount of depth, and within the first 20 seconds of the trailer you get exactly that. Also, let’s not forget that Wes Anderson has worked with Roald Dahl material before with his adaptation of Fantastic Mr. Fox, and that was an absolute joy to watch. Even though it’s a claymation film, you can still tell that Wes directed it. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar will be released on Netflix this September 27th. So, how excited are you for this short movie, and what’s your favourite Wes Anderson project thus far? Read the full article
