“My God, are you always this bossy when you’re cold?” asked Arthur, sounding slightly dazed.

This story was inspired by the thought of Prince William of Wales (and indeed the current Max von Hapsburg) studying at the University of St Andrews; it is also, as the title suggests, at least a little inspired by the operetta ‘The Student Prince’.
If you are newish to the Merlin fandom and haven’t yet listened to it, let me HIGHLY recommend the audio performance of the Student Prince performed by the author. I am not exaggerating when I say it is one of the best audiobook performances, professional or otherwise, I have ever heard. You can tell the author has training as an actor and, since it’s her work, she is able to fully embody the emotions of every character and scene.
I listen to it every Christmas and you should too.
The Student Prince by FayJay. I’ve read it well over ten times in the past few years I imagine, and I never cease to enjoy it. The beautiful blending of modernity, magic and romance - mixed with a few fight scenes and some political intrigue. Something I tend to miss when reading modern AUs is Merlin saving Arthur, and this fic is certainly not short on that front. I love Lance and Gwen, and Morgana and Morgause. They are greatly enjoyable, and I am only sad that the fic came out before Gwaine appeared in the show - he would be an excellent addition. I am glad of the character of Kay (though not overly fond mostly) because I he portrays the kind of character rarely seen - a bigoted prick with the redeeming element of loyalty. Awful man. Great fun to hate on. Overall all the characters are well rounded and endlessly interesting, and there’s a fair bit of smut (though none of it so plot essential it can’t merely be skimmed and moved on from). The quiet moments in it are also greatly appreciated. It combines most of my favourite elements of Merlin fic into one beautiful original template that many others base their tone or characterisations off. 2010 is early fandom in a lot of ways, but the fic is incredible. And the tiny sequel to it is cute and fun - I remember watching the Opening Ceremony of the Olympics, and despite being of an age to know better, thinking it simply must be magic.
I'm going into fandom history and reading The Student Prince for the first time, I don't know what the vibes are yet but I am very intrigued by the summary
On the “it was supposed to be a joke!” theme, is mustard!trey your favorite?
Back when all I knew about Twst was fanart I thought things like fairies not being able to resist Leona (fairy gala), Jack wagging his tail and then denying it while it is actively happening and Rook hunting his classmates for sport was just fandom hivemind stuff.
Every time I come across something from art that turns out to be real I am delighted, like Jamil’s towel conversation with Kalim before GloMas, I was 130% sure you’d made that up and could not stop giggling.
Trey's Mustard Mania is up there, but I think my favorite will always be Azul's robes story, in which -- I know I've talked about this before, but honestly we should be talking about this 24/7 because really -- it turns out the secret ingredient in Vil's fancy high-end moisturizer is Floyd. Vil has been spending the entire story walking around with Floyd Juice rubbed into his face. what does that mean? who knows! they just wring Floyd out like a towel (somehow?!) offscreen and put the drippings into a cute bottle and sell it to Vil for an exorbitant price! this is just something that happens in canon! why not!
also, the birthday boy sashes. for some reason no one ever believes the birthday boy sashes are real at first, and it's always a sheer delight to see "WAIT, IT ACTUALLY SAYS BIRTHDAY BOY?!" on my activity page. :D
Cinch had three charges in her care once, Celestia entrusted her with the day-to-day care of Prince Blueblood, the new Princess Cadence and her student Sunset Shimmer - running a kingdom is difficult enough alone without three young ponies to look after - so when Celestia is absent (often) that means Cinch was in charge of these three ponies. And while the matron of the castle was always rigid about rules and wanted her three charges to uphold her reputation and to build their own budding reputations high, she cared about them very much. You'd have to, spending your time with the same three young ponies for so long, guiding and teaching them to be their best...
By the time Ditzy came into the picture, Cinch was down to two charges. She refused to fail them the way she failed...
Well, with one down, there were two left and she cared so much she wouldn't let anyone ruin them, especially not themselves. Surely they would come to realize Cinch was only helping.
I love the notion that Malleus is possessive, but can we also toy with the idea of him having a just as/if not even more possessive partner like-
MC: *pouting while watching Malleus be dotted on by diasmonia students or whoever else*
MC: Malleus could you come here please!
Malleus: Oh! Pardon me.
Malleus: Yes my treasure, is something the matter? You usually don’t use my full name unless-
MC: Unless somethings wrong. We have plans Malleus but you seem to be a bit distracted..
Malleus: Don’t mind them, I was just engaging in some conversation.
MC: Of course, because you know very well that- *tugs on tie*
Malleus: oh-
MC: I was fortunate enough to score the most eligible bachelor in the entire wonderland. I’m the one who you come to on late nights to keep you company. And I! Don’t ever plan on letting you go.
Here we can clearly see Gouenji sizing Fubuki up. Gouenji therapy is very precise and the ball needs to hit Fubuki Just Right to glue his personalities together else it wouldn't work and the words wouldn't hit him as hard either
Having created this Tumblr for no other purpose than send HIUH (Hand in Unlovable Hand) asks to @thickenmyblood, I figured why not dedicate winter break to fic analysis posts?
So let's start with the title!
How could you possibly be here if you're worried about spoilers, but...
Hand in Unlovable Hand.
At first I was oriented toward the Mountain Goats song (“No Children”), you know how it goes :
I am drowning
there is no sign of land
you are coming down with me
hand in unlovable hand
And throughout the fic's posting, lots of readers have been alternately finding Damen and then Laurent very hard to like (which was an awesome reading experience in and of itself because fanfic doesn’t always tend toward deeply complex characters). So the sort-of-toxic relationship view felt plausible (except I was always going for “appears-toxic-but-is-actually-true-love-and-totally-fixable” because this is make-believe anyway and it’s based on CP, so).
But now I’m thinking, what if the “unlovable” is actually about people who think they are unlovable? And what if that’s not just both Damen and Laurent, but also Nicaise?
So, like, what if what this little family actually has in common – even if Damen appears to have a very different history and Laurent has said they are too different – is their individual fears that no one will ever really love them?
Like Nicaise obviously doesn’t think Damen can actually love the real him and tries to be on his best behavior (even while pushing Damen’s boundaries). And Nicaise seems like he’s doing his level best to drive Laurent away, so that when Laurent eventually abandons him – as he fears - he can pretend that’s what he wanted anyway.
And Damen has panic attacks about Maxime not because he gives a shit about Maxime but because he’s let Maxime represent the idea that Laurent never really loved Damen, but was just using Damen and moved on quickly and painlessly. And Damen had no mother and had a distant father and a resentful half-brother and he’s only just beginning to believe that chosen family can be real family.
And Laurent completely doesn’t get that Damen has this insecurity because he sees Damen’s life as so normal and charmed.
And, finally, even though our unreliable narrator thinks Laurent has always been in control of everything, including their relationship and entrance into the family formed by Laurent and Nicaise, Laurent’s insecurities (on nearly full display in Chapter 19) have been sprinkled throughout this fic like breadcrumbs.
In the original breakup:
“We’re different. We want different things.”
Damen said nothing. The coffee was ashy in his mouth. Dry.
“I’ve got Nicaise,” Laurent said, “and I can’t—this is not working. It was never going to work.”
In the overheard conversation with Ancel:
Ancel’s back is all Damen can see. His hair shakes from roots to ends when he tilts his head in Laurent’s direction. “I thought,” he says, slowly, “that you wanted different.”
“I did.”
“Ugh, Laurent, you’re giving me a headache. What even is the pro—”
“I’m not,” Laurent says, louder than before. The shock of sound works like a slap, and Damen wants to move back into the hallway, to scurry to the other bathroom, to leave them alone, but his legs simply won’t take him there. “ I’m not. I’m still—you heard what Nicaise—”
In Laurent's interpretation of the breakup:
“You wanted out,” Laurent says, “so I gave you out.”
But Damen finds Laurent so loveable – and he didn’t ever really talk to Laurent about the effects his abuse – that he can’t understand how unloveable Laurent feels.
So I feel like they three are all so much alike (and so lost in insecurity) that now they’re all talking past each other.
But I also feel like when they come back together in the right way, the family will be so good for each other, damn it!
“You do realise that you aren’t allowed to go turning people into frogs if they insult me, don’t you?” he said, cautiously. “I mean – there’s a lot of smiling and waving and smiling and waving and gritting your teeth and being polite.”
“I can do that!” Merlin said, staunchly. “I’m not stupid.”
Arthur closed his eyes. “Oh, God,” he said, his voice quivering with suppressed laughter. “This is going to be a nightmare, isn’t it?”
