btw, the violinist in tmp 4? he's probably james smithson, of "founder of the smithsonian institute" fame
so what do we know about our violinist? he grew up in alnwick abbey, he was illegitimate and had legitimate full siblings, a father "certain of his celestial significance", and he has a nephew to whom he leaves his violin
and smithson? well, his father restored alnwick abbey in the 1750s, which was in ruins up until then. smithson was the only illegitimate child of any of the dukes there in the 1700s, which is when the statement is set
smithson also left his estate to his nephew after his death, with the condition that his fortune would establish the smithsonian institute if his nephew died without any children.
here's a point of divergence, however. in our timeline, smithson was a chemist and mineralogist. in tmagp's timeline, he was a violinist. however, as u/New_Helicopter836 pointed out to me on reddit, when smithson's body was disinterred by andrew graham bell, his right little finger was such that it suggests he played "the harpsichord, the piano, or a stringed instrument such as a violin"
looking at smithson's life, he left for university in 1782, so it's likely that tmagp 4 is set around the same time. it might be a bit earlier since the royal court orchestra moved from mannheim to munich in 1778 (putting smithson at about 13), it might be another point of divergence, or smithson is describing it this way to call back to its earlier significance. i'm not sure, but it's weird either way.
all that said, i'm not terribly sure why smithson describes his father (sir hugh smithson/percy, duke of northumberland) as "certain of his celestial significance", especially when the only other time he says celestial is to describe the violin's music. the user i mentioned before found that sir hugh, a major patron of architectural projects, had an observatory built, but i find smithson's language too specific. is his father an avatar too? mannheim is only a bit north of schwartzwald, after all, and this is about thirty years before tmag 23 where albrecht writes to jonah magnus.
let's look a little at smithson's bequest to found the smithsonian institute in the first place. smithson asked for it to be "an establishment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge among men". the magnus institute, notably, is described in the arg as a place of education, and it was founded in 1818. although smithson died in 1829 and his nephew in 1835, the original smithsonian (the columbian institute) was granted a charter by the us government in 1818.
the letter is strangely absent of any names for the violinist or his family, and i can't help but wonder if this is why. and if it is because this is smithson - is this related to why the magnus institute exists instead of the magnus archives? the smithsonian, before it was renamed, was originally granted a charter by the us govt in 1818 - the same year that the magnus institute was founded in tmagp.
this is set 30 years before we know anything of jonah magnus, at least in tmag, so is it possible that he persuaded smithson to fund his educational institute focusing on the supernatural? the changed course of smithson's life from scientist to supernatural violinist would certainly be conducive for that, not least to mention the strange absence of his fortune from his letter to his nephew.

After the whole Kuwei auction debacle, Kaz suddenly becomes a huge stickler about pairing off during jobs. The Dregs all complain to each other about what a hard-ass he's being, but unless they want to be scrubbing toilets for a month, they'd better stick to their pairs all the way until everyone reconvenes at the end of the job, no matter how in-the-clear or "finished" it may seem. No detours, no dallying, and absolutely no one going on their own. The Dregs don't get what the big deal is, and maybe Kaz doesn't even admit it to himself, but some buried part of him knows why.

Zim, Dib, Gaz, and Tak are actually all horribly vindictive spiteful people to more or less equal degrees, but the interesting thing is that Zim and Gaz both exact vengeance in very specific, premeditated ways, which are often wildly out of proportion but once they feel like they've evened the score they will pretty much immediately forget about whatever pissed them off in the first place—whereas Dib and Tak are both ostensibly above being ruled by petty grudges, but very obviously boiling over with a constant resentment that sends them pouncing like rabid dogs at even the slightest opportunity or excuse to make the object of their ire suffer (and if they're both working towards their own self-serving end game that just HAPPENS to involve every terrible thing imaginable befalling their enemies, well... that'll just be a happy by-product of their personal success).
I don't I have any point to make here, I just like it when these freaks are all an overwhelming danger to society (and each other)

No but I'm obsessed with the situationship where Durge and Karlach are friends, Durge and Gortash are lovers and Gortash and Karlach can't stand each other.
Also, depending on Durge, the Durgetash reveal can be messy af with both Durge and Karlach reacting violently, Karlach at the fact what her friend is the architect of that mess and Gortash's lover and Durge at her and the team's reaction.
Bonus point if Durge is loyal to Gortash to a fault bc they went against their Father's direct wishes bc of the affection towards that man, and everyone having an awful time dealing with it.

No but something I love is how fucking loyal Miklan really is (in Hopes specifically since we don't have enough information in Houses).
At the camp, he takes his job seriously. Very seriously. He doesn't act begrudging or like he's just doing anything by force. As the chapters go on he not only goes from relatively aloof to a full fledged commander (which is great development in that span of chapters btw considering how fast the story has to progress) and one who fights for Faerghus because he wants to (why would he reassure the player that he's going to, literally, hold down the fort? Why doesn't he flee when his life is in immediate danger despite that Dimtiri prefers his allies to flee and save their lives over sacrificing themselves? Why does he like helping citizens who had their lands destroyed by the war, despite being a bandit who used to plunge towns just like those?).
At any time when the Empire was attacking, he could've surrendered and even joined their side because of not liking Faerghus and its people... if he didn't like Faerghus and its people. Also, someone brought this up to me once that Miklan likely has family in the Empire still, because his mother was from the Empire. He had a perfectly good out that wouldn't even necessarily be considered treason to Faerghus, i.e. surrendering and going to the Empire to protect that side of his family.
He doesn't. He dies for Faerghus. It was both a matter of honor due to the fact that he was finally living the life he always should've been and wanted to be respected for that, and also his loyalty that followed in the past's wrongs being righted. No matter what you think of Miklan post disinheritance, he was the heir who was removed because he didn't have a Crest. All over just that, despite that Sylvain having a Crest never meant they didn't still have someone capable of fighting off Sreng invasions.
They had someone able to wield the Lance of Ruin, so why did it matter if he was officially the heir? Miklan felt like his life was stolen from him (and I'm not saying what he did to Sylvain was okay either). Dimitri gave him all of that back and he started to become loyal to Faerghus and its king because Dimitri was giving the chance even the man's own father never gave him from the moment Sylvain was determined to have a Crest.
What happened in his life before Dimitri had him brought to him as soon as he became king is, in a way, almost like it never happened as far as Miklan's behavior. It was obviously there at first, but over time it's like it never happened. That is, if someone met him and didn't know about his past, by chapter 9 they'd never even know he'd had that history. He was the person he would've been years ago if he hadn't been disinherited, which led to the mess that led to him being disowned (and he says he just "left", but Matthias doesn't mince facts. At all. If that had been the case he wouldn't just say he disowned him. He would admit Miklan ran away. That means Miklan claims he left as a means of coping and trying to convince other people that it was his choice and not forced on him).
Miklan became a lot more loyal than he's ever given credit for, both in the game and in the fandom. Gwendal did recognize it, but that's about all we're given.
Gwendal corrected himself when Miklan died, referring to him instead as Sir Miklan instead of the insults he was spewing during their fight which were very clearly pissing Miklan off; but Miklan kept fighting and defending the fort, not just because he wanted to prove Gwendal wrong but because he was here because he was pulled out of his life as a bandit. The people he was defending the fort for were the people who effectively gave him his life back.
Basically, he would've been there in that fort defending it anyway if he had lived the life he should have to begin with. If his value was acknowledged all along, he would've been defending the most important fort in Faerghus all along (if this exact scenario occurred and everything was the same except him being disowned in the first place). He would be there being the commander and fighter he was supposed to be.
Mind you, it was the king himself who gave him that chance, meaning the person who reigns over Faerghus and has the most power to change whatever the hell he wants - including how people with Crests and without are treated. Miklan was part of a fight to better their society and be part of the new generation taking over. Nobody could truly change things unless the king - the top power - had the thought to change them (not saying Lambert thought the political climate was good the way it was, but he clearly had other priorities and it didn't seem to be something weighing on his mind. He may not have even truly noticed the problems and power discrepancies because he was so focused on other things).
However, the moment the king thought to change all that old stuff, Miklan was one of the first people who came to mind, and one of the first people he took action regarding, to integrate into his new army (and he even mentioned completely rearranging his army and whatnot, and then we find out he had Miklan located basically right after becoming king. We had a two year timeskip and Miklan had been there for those two years because of how soon after Dimitri was crowned that he had decided to bring Miklan back and give him another chance).
If the king sought to change things and was taking active action to prove it, that was something Miklan could see and realize was actually going to happen. It wasn't a blind trust - he could see Dimitri was actually doing it. He had a reason to be able to trust him with this.
He was also able to trust the people who were watching over him, i.e. the people Dimitri had making sure he didn't revert back to any sort of banditry. Those people could have easily faked it, made up that he did something and that they had killed him on the spot. Dimitri trusted those people not to do that of course, but those people were not told to bring him to Dimitri if he did anything. They were told to apprehend him and kill him immediately (which is reasonable, given what he'd done in the past, and they wouldn't want to try to wait to get Dimitri over to wherever they were. If Miklan escaped in that time, they'd just have a big problem on their hands).
So that is to say, those people could've just faked it at any point and killed him. They didn't. They, like Dimitri, were willing to give him another chance provided he didn't do anything bad.
The same goes for Felix and everyone else who had qualms about him being allowed into their army. Dimitri explicitly stated if anyone had issues with his appointment as a commander to "by all means" kill him themselves. He literally made it an open option for his friends to just up and kill him if they truly couldn't forgive him (which at that point was more reasonable of a time because the war was still new and people didn't know if they could trust him with this specific appointment yet. By later in the story I don't think it would have been as reasonable for someone to try to kill him after he'd already been proving himself).
In other words, nobody did it. Everyone, literally everyone, backed off and respected Dimitri's decision (and technically Sylvain and Matthias' as well). None of those people, even when given open opportunity, turned a weapon on him. Not one. These people all gave him a chance. These are the same people he died fighting for, and for himself to be able to feel like he was fighting and dying for what he would have to begin with if he hadn't been disinherited - Faerghus and its people.
In the end Miklan was in both rank and heart a top ranking commander of Faerghus and he both appreciated it and knew he appreciated it. He was looking forward to the future Dimitri would bring, basically saying that he thinks Dimitri is a fool ("weak-willed") for it but that he now believes in it too. If anyone wants to try arguing those points, I have receipts as the young folk call them, fresh from Miklan himself about his feelings about it as spoken to Catherine and Shamir!
Miklan fought for the future he was hoping to see, and he died protecting that future. Again, not something he by any means whatsoever had to do. He was tasked with guarding the fortress, but was never told to lay down his life defending it. After years and years of being hateful and angry, he finally had some peace of mind and hope for what he could be. He was loyal to Dimitri in the end because Dimitri was loyal to him - that is, he kept his word and Miklan was able to thrive in Dimitri's society without being a bandit or having to worry about his future because of his status.
Like Dimitri said, the only thing holding him down by that point were his past mistakes. It was up to Miklan to do something about that for himself with the opportunity he was given to fix it. Dimitri said here, fix it, and Miklan said okay, and worked to fix it. For me the saddest part is that he didn't even get enough time to properly fix it and be able to be free of his past. He died for Faerghus though, with his dying words being that he was able to buy them time (to arrive and fight back against the attacking Empire). That's not something someone who holds a resentful grudge would say in their last moments. He was grateful he managed to buy the other fighters time, even though it cost him his life.
hopes was a dumpster fire a whole lot of times but its incorporation of miklan into the plot was not one of them. miklan fire emblem my love you will live on in my heart and in my fics. i am also deeply grateful to hopes for uh i guess hopes-canonizing (hopesonizing???) basically every one of my headcanons about him before the game came out.
#Miklan#Miklan Anschutz Gautier#remember the time i mentioned working on a fic and it was an au and like#i had planned to kill him and glenn off together for the plot? and how i scrapped it bc i got too attached to them?#and i couldn't go through with it when i thought abt sylvain and miklan's could be would be relationship?#that was me on the right track for the rest of my life. even back then i see i had a FEELING#i just KNEW something. funny enough in hopes miklan has a line that's like#pretty close to what i had him say in the fic... so uh my assertions and understandings of his character#were scarily accurate before we had anything but him as an enemy in houses to go by#and what dimitri talked abt post that chapter. uhhh maybe i am a miklan whisperer???#anyway miklan is easily by far the most underrated character in the entirety of hopes#and one of the most underrated characters overall#he has one of the most interesting stories from start to finish (esp in hopes)#how he was a noble family's heir to being disinherited to becoming an angry and hateful child#to growing up like that bc evidently nobody tried to steer him on the right path#to getting disowned only to be disowned for a lol measly for few months or so TOPS in hopes lmao#before being told to come back. in houses he was disowned presumably exactly as long but#dimitri wasn't the top power of faerghus. he couldn't have made the decision he got to make in hopes#so ofc the whole yeehaw lance of ruin thing happened. in hopes' case he was gone that long and just#took a vacation basically and came back and was basically told /B E H A V E/#except everyone was finally trying to steer him in the right direction even if it was SUUUPER fucking late#and he was grown up and set in his ways/behaviors/mannerisms that arose due to his childhood and onward#BUT from there and after being a very spiteful bandit he pulled himself together and was genuinely happier for it#enough to the point of considering himself ''weak willed'' to have started to believe in these visions dimitri has for the future#it makes me sad how he died in ag and like... even outside of ag there was never any hope of that family being whole#they weren't whole from the moment sylvain was determined to have a crest#and they couldn't be whole in houses bc dimitri never had the chance to change anything#then in hopes they could never be whole bc a different gautier dies in every hopes route#my poor fam never even had a chance to be whole again even though they genuinely tried so hard to be ;n; ;n; ;n;

I am so fucking sick of living with my roommate and his fuck ass boyfriend. Also watching my roommate burn every single one of his (already rather minimal, I might add) bridges for this guy is also kind of painful but also his relationship with me is one of said bridges so I'm almost past the point of even feeling bad for him lmao
#i have had to piss for probably the better part of an hour now#because they decided to take a shower together and have been in there for well OVER an hour now#and this is a nightly occurence atp sometimes MULTIPLE times a day#we have one bathroom.... can yall not be considerate enough to not be in there for up to TWO HOURS AT A TIME???#also it's such a waste of fucking water....#idk we've hit a point where i literally hear the bf doing anything and i get pissed off#but also tell me why i'm sitting in my room (which shares a wall with the bathroom) and i can hear this man hacking and spitting shit up#and this is also something that happens multiple times a day#like.... dude.... why are you spitting up toothpaste so fucking loudly oh my fucking god#but yeah no i'm like my roommate's only friend atp and he's about to not have me lmao like we're about to reach#'i'm cutting you off when i move out' levels of me being pissed off with this whole situation type shit#and apparently the bf convinced him to come out to his family which his mom was chill which is good#his dad's side of the family though....? not great. and my roommate KNEW that would be the case cuz we'd talked about it before#also love that my roommate has constantly talked about moving out of the city we live in because he hates and also there's no good career#opportunities for him here (which is true)#and now. MAGICALLY. he's like 'idk i think it'd be best for me to stay here'#like oh my GOD???? are you hearing yourself???? are you fucking stupid???? you fucking hate it here???#but sure throw your life away and ruin all your meaningful relationships for a guy you met six months ago jfc#and the thing is i *know* my roommate we've been close CLOSE friends for nearly a decade now#i know he is not like this.... like yeah he's being insane by allowing this but also i know these aren't the kinds of decisions he would ma#and also i know he wouldn't treat me like this all on his own#it's the deranged fucking control freak of a guy he decided to date and my roommate has too many of his own issues to put his foot down#about certain things and tell the guy no so he's just allowing him to completely take over his life#and fuck everything up until the bf is the only thing he has left once it's all said and done#and yeah. it's painful to watch. but also wtf am i supposed to do because obviously my opinion is not respected nor wanted regarding this#that has been made PAINFULLY clear#ugh this is so fucking horrendous#what is it with ppl who start to date someone and then go clinically fucking insane and destroy their lives all for this one person#who. realistically. they barely know in comparison to all the other ppl in their life#like explain it to me jfc

Hello again so soon. I’m kind of just generally curious about the “redemption” part of Grian’s arc too, like, what forces them to finally confront each other’s identities? How do they Deal With it? What about the reactions of the rest of Team Scar? What is their dynamic like immediately after? What do they Do to shift it until Grian’s officially part of the Team?
(I’ve had this bit of idea hanging in the back of my mind since I first got the gist of this AU where in whatever event forces them to confront each other’s identities, Grian’s actually manages to get hurt enough that he breaks a wing, and because its not a limb he normally has, he can only partially de-transform until its healed. So he cant really leave his house at risk of his identity, and may or may not have anyone able/prepared to treat an injury like that, so he somehow (begrudgingly) ends up being cared for by Scar, forcing them to actually talk and not just hide from each other forever—)
so, the "being forced to confront each other's identities" works a bit like this currently in my head:
scar figures it out first.
he then immediately represses it, because he's still associating the enemy magical girl with being a villain, even if a villain he's trying to help. but scar figures it out. grian isn't that subtle, and while everyone else seems to be fooled by the magic, magical girls themselves are somewhat resistant to their own identity-concealing magic. so, he knows it's grian, and he refuses to know it's grian. this continues for a bit.
for a while, it becomes clear that A) grian does not actually have the same goals as the shadow organization and often disagrees with them despite working with them and B) grian is in over his head and can be redeemed. scar reaches out the most. cub actually disagrees with this for a while but after cub is possessed he mellows a bit because he Gets It more. cub's still more likely to shoot grian in this phase than try to help but you know, won't try to argue scar should stop anymore. bdubs is interestingly mixed; given that bdubs joins the team late he has a weird perspective and doesn't really Get scar's fixation but also is like yeah okay. i don't trust her but okay.
so then we start to get more stuff where grian is forced into a role where he's on the same side as scar occasionally. pearl's arrival in town is the first of these - pearl gets caught up in a monster attack and gets possessed while trying to investigate the shadow organization and grian ends up helping fight/rescue her against the shadow organization's will. he tries to do this sneakily but team scar catches on. he also starts helping civilians a bit more as he fights team scar and generally despite trying to present himself as terrifying is nearly at the end of his rope.
it becomes somewhat clear what grian's real goal is - while he agrees with the shadow organization that magic should not be re-sealed, some past experience with a freak magical accident that happened in one of the rare times magic still leaks through into the world in combination with his partner spirit being the spirit of freedom has lead grian to want the spirits to be able to run free. he wants magic back in the world in full and he wants the spirits to have some safe way to run free.
he's just... started to realize the consequences of that and is having trouble getting out of the situation of 'he has to work with the shadow organization because unlike team scar he has literally no one else to help him'. in addition, grian has thoroughly convinced himself he's a villain (a villain for a cause he believes in but a bad guy he's a bad person and he knows it) and refuses to work with team scar when scar reaches out.
this is about when grian puts two and two together and realizes that the guy at work he's becoming close friends with, scar, is also the enemy magical girl. i think grian has to actively catch scar transforming to figure it out he figures it out WAY later than scar does. unlike scar though he DOESN'T repress, he just panics, because the thing with grian is that while he hurts a lot of people and acts like he likes doing it, he actually doesn't want to hurt anyone, let alone his friends. which is why pearl was the initial catalyst for him to work with team scar in emergencies more often, and is why he's suddenly awkwardly holding back when he and scar fight.
this comes to a head when scar gets very badly injured in a spirit fight. the spirit is something like the spirit of death or something and it's bad and grian flips and drives out the spirit again (albeit without sealing it because grian can't actually do that). he saves scar's life and scar basically is like. i knew you could do it. you're one of my best friends i knew you could do better. i knew it was you, grian, i knew you were a good person.
grian flees because he Cannot Handle This. he's injured himself, so he has the conversation with doc i wrote at one point in his last conversation with the shadow organization as an ally. he gets patched up.
grian then vanishes for two weeks.
he doesn't tell his boss, he doesn't tell scar, he doesn't tell anyone, and scar is terrified. the only reason scar isn't more terrified is that no new magical warriors have come from the shadow organization or something. meanwhile grian has just like. fucked off to another city because he's had a panic attack slash crisis of faith over being called a good person and the fact that scar has known and not done anything about it what the fuck. he also sorta realizes that he doesn't like where he'd gotten stuck and starts trying to talk with the spirit of freedom, who has developed into kind of a friend, to figure out what to do with himself.
he proceeds to get captured by the shadow organization, which has managed to hunt him down and decided that, since grian clearly isn't cooperative anymore, he's a threat, and more useful to take apart and study than as a distraction for team scar now. grian proceeds to have a Bad Time for several days before being given an offer by the spirit of freedom:
grian is now powerful enough as a magical girl to transform on his own. he knows this, the shadow organization doesn't quite know this but that's because grian's refused to give it away, the spirit of freedom knows this. grian has also never been easy to possess; he wrested control from the spirit of freedom on his own, after all, way back in the beginning, in order to become a mage all on his own.
but he can still become possessed willingly.
and an actual, fully-fledged and independent magical girl being possessed is a calamity on a scale that no other possession can compare to.
grian agrees. cue madoka-inspired creature made of wings and broken cage bars basically entirely destroying the underground facility he'd been in and briefly becoming effectively a natural disaster, a 'king of monsters' arc where grian basically out of fear and anger and pain and all his conflicting emotions decides that fine, he's fully joining the side of the spirits, he's done being human he's done dealing with this. he's also pretty done being in his right mind because neither he nor the spirit of freedom are actually capable of fully handling the resulting power of "spirit fully possessing a magical locus as powerful as grian had gotten at that point".
team scar has to fight him and also talk him down enough for grian to manage to claw back enough right mind to separate from the spirit of freedom, but also to want to. combination fight scenes and VERY emotional final conversations and also i think scar just completely detransforms in front of grian and is like "no more secrets all this laid bare now come on please let me help you, you were right i don't actually think all magic should be sealed anymore but i also don't think what you're doing now is right, you are hurting people and you are hurt and this isn't you".
scar manages to talk grian down from being a pure calamity and then spirits him away to a hiding place where he can stay safe while team scar tries to figure out what the fuck to do now.
for the record, even after ALL OF THIS i think cub doesn't fully trust grian. bdubs trusts that grian is too much of an emotional and physical wreck when he first switches sides to do anything but cub's like. have you seen some of the stunts this lady has pulled. i am not keeping my eyes off of her. and grian knows he has some SERIOUS work to do to get people's trust again especially after what just happened.
and this leads into team scar finally doing a full assault on the (now much more damaged) shadow organization like this is the last arc before that happens i think lol
subject to change of course if other people have good ideas i REALLY like your idea too i just had the very dramatic image of grian, king of monsters, for a while now and so that's definitely happening.

The thing I hate about peoples "Venom is supposed to be scary!" takes is I dont even really disagree inherently but the scary thing about Venom was originally the fact that they knew everything about Peter and used that information to relentlessly stalk him, showing up where he lived and where Aunt May lived multiple times and just kind of terrorizing him. Genuinely Venom just being a stalker is so much creepier then the whole like "Venom is a scary evil monster man and the symbiote turns you into the worst version of yourself!" kind of thing people go for
