pairing: chris x (gf) reader, some reader x bsf matt and nick <3
summary: how chris would support his girlfriend before, after, and through wisdom teeth removal, as well as being under the influence of anesthetics!
warnings: fluffy!headcannons, dentist, mention of teeth pulling, little blood, slight mention of needles, anesethetics, established relationships.
authors note: kind of a blurb more than hc's tbh? it was a little rushed! sorry!
₊⊹⤑ you had been talking about how nervous you were for a couple weeks now..
₊⊹⤑ so it was no surprise when the whole car ride there, you were holding your boyfriends hand and avoiding the topic of what you knew was coming.
₊⊹⤑ chris had been reminding you everyday that besides the needle, the rest of it you wouldn't even remember. he ensured that him matt and nick would be there the entire time if you needed a hand or two.. or three to hold.
₊⊹⤑ with some encouragement (and chris lending you his grey zip up to wear for emotional and physical comfort) you did manage to enter the building just to get it done and over with.
₊⊹⤑ while the IV was intruding your skin, chris stayed next to you, asking about what flavour of ice cream you'd be getting after as a distraction from the needle.
₊⊹⤑ from there on, the process itself you had no memory of but chris stuck close by the entire time incase you needed anything or for some reason woke up.
₊⊹⤑ "hey sweetheart how'r ya feeling?" chris would ask while gently holding your hand when you come to your senses
₊⊹⤑ confused, your instinct was to sit up but chris would immedietly usher you to lay back down, letting you know that they're done working on your teeth.
₊⊹⤑ "why dtha fack is this bullshit still in my fucking arm then HUH?" your words wonky from the cotton in your mouth and the haze of anesthetic.
₊⊹⤑ "shh, were in public stop cursing like a sailor" "dude, nobody under like 100 says 'cursing like a sailor'" "yeah, what he thsaid!"
₊⊹⤑ chris would of course glare at you for agreeing with matt. but his thumb soothingly rubbing your hand tells you that he's obviously not too mad.
₊⊹⤑ you would leave later then you should have because everytime a password was given to you, you'd forget less than five seconds later..
₊⊹⤑ "it was ass right?" "no, it was GRASS sweetheart...."
₊⊹⤑ everything that came out of your mouth had the doctors and the triplets giggling.
₊⊹⤑ when it came time to take the IV out, chris thought that a 'got your nose' joke would be funny to distract you with. it was... definetly distracting at least???
₊⊹⤑ usually you were sweet to your boyfriend but something about anesthetic had you more than arguementative today.
₊⊹⤑ chris would try complimenting you "you look pretty even like this"
₊⊹⤑ "i KNOW i do. stop being corny you sthtoopid fuck" chris's jaw drops like he's offended but you don't care because nick's contagious laugh brings out your own laughter out as well.
₊⊹⤑ "i thought i was supposed to be the stupid one right now, not you"
₊⊹⤑ "maybe YOUU need to see the dentist about all those terrible jokes that come out of your mouth."
₊⊹⤑ you had no filter, just having fun rebelling against your usual niceness to your loved one.
₊⊹⤑ then finally the car ride came.
₊⊹⤑ now you leant on chris' shoulder to take a nap
₊⊹⤑ "thought i was stupid?" he questions, arm coming around to pull you in closer. "shhhh i'm sthleeping" the inpedament on your speech makes him giggle. "I SAID SHHHHHH" "jesus. my bad sleepyhead"
₊⊹⤑ the whole car ride he was making sure you didn't need your gauze changed, asking if you need water, offering you chapstick. you had to tell him to shut up at least 100 times before he'd relax, telling him you could put your own damn chapstick on. (you ended up asking him for help two minutes later...)
₊⊹⤑ the whole rest of the car ride was filled with you zipping up and down the zipper of your boyfriends sweater you had on, mixed with your favourite artist playing as you attempted to sing along
₊⊹⤑ the second you entered the triplets home, you rested on the couch with your legs over your boyfriends lap, singing a song that everyones pretty sure doesn't exist..
₊⊹⤑ "i love... YOUUUUUUU, i lovovovovovee YOUU, all three of YOUUuUuU-" "someone sedate her again." nick jokes while handing you an ice pack you'd previously asked for.
₊⊹⤑ "want me to hold it on your jaw for you bab- oh" before he can finish speaking you're gripping his wrist, leaning toward him "wanna know something?" you ask eagerly "hm?" "I LOVE YOU!" "i love you more"
₊⊹⤑ matt and nick didn't enjoy the next 30 minutes of the predictable arguement at all.
₊⊹⤑ once the delusion of the anesthetic wore off, you were just plain tired. nick and matt had both chosen to chill in their own rooms by now.
₊⊹⤑ the second you mentioned wanting to lay down, chris curled up behind you with a blanket over the two of you. he held you tight, muttering in your ear about how good you did today and how proud he is that you went.
₊⊹⤑ "sorry for calling you stupid" you apologize with a sweetly apologetic smile.
₊⊹⤑ "aw, it's okay. i know you didn't mean it-" "wellll sometimes.." "nevermind i don't forgive you."
₊⊹⤑ he'd make sure your favourite cartoon was on and that he held your ice pack on your sore jaw till you eventually drifted into sleep.

In honour of Doctor Who's 60th birthday, here are 60* things that I like about less popular** Doctor Who stories.
(*in multiple posts because I'm falling foul of the character limit)
(**IMDB rating of less than 7/10)
1. Susan is great in The Sensorites. She's at her absolute best in stories like this where she gets to be genuinely a bit alien and a bit weird.
2. "So," said someone at the BBC, "we're going to produce an allegory for different political systems, using insects. Choreographed by a mime artist. On a budget of about £2.50." The Web Planet might not entirely have succeeded, but my god, you have to love that they tried.
3. They introduced Jamie, the best companion, in The Highlanders! How is does this have less than a 7/10 rating, what is wrong with you people. It's Jamie.
4. I applaud the utter bonkersness of The Underwater Menace, and Patrick Troughton really gives it socks.
5. The Wheel in Space is proper 60s sci-fi: Servo-Robots, x-ray lasers, radio beams! I can practically smell Penguin mass-market paperbacks thinking about it. And with the introduction of Zoe, it completes my all-time favourite TARDIS team.
6. The Dominators contains the Quarks, who are adorable. They weren't supposed to be, but it doesn't matter.
7. Zoe is still relatively new to the TARDIS, but she has heaps to do in The Krotons. Nice having a female companion who's written as smart and capable.
8. We have entered the 70s, so with Colony in Space, we get Social Issues. Especially an Evil Mining Corporation, which are always fun.
9. More Social Issues in The Mutants, but this time they're paired with big sci-fi ideas. Ancient tablets! Strange life cycles! Love how much is going on here.
10. The Time Monster is like the Eurovision of Doctor Who. Deeply silly, but what would Doctor Who be without silliness? I'm sorry about Jo's coccyx too.
11. I love that they returned to Peladon in The Monster of Peladon, especially with the 50-year time jump. I'd like to see that kind of follow-up more often.
12. Is it not cool to love K9 any more? Well, I like my Doctor Who with a dose of silliness, and The Invisible Enemy delivered that. Every time traveller needs a robot dog.
13. The design of the Seers in Underworld is excellent, I love a brass dome.
14. Doctor Who doesn't have enough giant squidmonsters looming on the horizons. I'm glad the The Power of Kroll does something to address the deficit.
15. The Creature from the Pit gave us the line "a teaspoon and an open mind", and I appreciate it for that at least.
16. Romana wears one of her best of many splendid outfits in The Horns of Nimon.
17. I liked all the arch dialogue between the Doctor, Enlightenment and Persuasion in Four to Doomsday.
18. Heathrow airport is an underrated setting. I also appreciate how Time-Flight prominently features Concorde, making it far more 80s than they could ever have planned.
19. I don't intend this to be damning with faint praise (even though it probably sounds like it) but my favourite thing about Arc of Infinity is that we get a little jaunt through 80s Amsterdam. I do love a tram.
20. Babyfaced Martin Clunes doing his spoiled princeling thing in Snakedance is enjoyably disconcerting.
21. Terminus is tense and scary and bleak. Another one that I'd expected to be more highly rated.
22. Warriors of the Deep gives us a very solid base under siege. Silurians + Cold War is a winning combination.
23. Landing in a modern village doing a historical re-enactment in The Awakening is a witty touch.
24. I can’t say I enjoyed the idea of the Doctor’s violent moods in The Twin Dilemma, but I have to commend it as a punchy way to introduce the new regeneration.
25. The Mark of the Rani should surely get some love just for introducing the Rani: camp, delightful, iconic.
26. Herbert turning out to be HG Wells in Timelash is a lovely twist and handled well.
27. The Trial of a Time Lord is so grand and ambitious. If the show hadn't been struggling in general at this point, it would be among the all-time greats.
28. With its colour-coded gangs and faux-urban slang, Paradise Towers is gloriously of its time in a way that currently feels quite naff, but that I suspect will be fascinating to revisit in about 30 years.
29. Delta and the Bannermen is action-packed and has one of the best titles in 80s Who.
30. Possibly the most terrifying moment in all of Doctor Who is Kane's face melting in Dragonfire. This series is nothing if it doesn't send children running for safety behind the sofa.
31. Got to love it when Who gets aggressively anti-Thatcher, and they never did it more than in The Happiness Patrol.

We should start a star trek voyager project to rewrite the 138 episodes that take place after Threshold. Maintain the original plots for the most part, but now the lizard babies are there.
Introduce a crewman who is a babysitter for them when Janeway and Paris have to go do Mission Stuff. For one episode the babysitter gets injured or something and tuvok and neelix to take care of the babies and they're teething! Have Paris tell his dad that he's now a grandfather. Seska steals Voyager in Basics but she misses the babies because no one has gotten around to adding them to the crew register yet, so now Lon Suder has to take care of them while sneaking around the ship.
By the time of The Year of Hell, they can talk, and they're of equivalent intelligence to like 5 year old (modern) humans. One of them dies during the episode, and Janeway is devastated. They come back at the end, of course.
They get mad when they find out the publisher edited them out of The Doctor's hit holonovel of life on Voyager. They show up in Barclay's recreation of life on Voyager, but he gets them completely wrong. They look like iguanas, not salamanders.
During The Killing Game, one of them eats a Hirogen Nazi. Janeway is so proud.
The Voth use them as PROOF that their two species are related, during Distant Origin.
When Q wants to have a kid with Janeway during The Q and the Grey, she replies "I've already got enough kids, thank you very much"
One of them decides to stay with Neelix when he leaves Voyager, having become attached to him, and Neelix treating them like the child they never had.
By the end of the show they'd be six years old, and they obviously grow up fast. They could easily be junior members of the crew by then. They are close friends with Icheb and Q2.
Tom has redesigned the Delta Flyer so that one of the Lizard Kids (the "oldest", Mark) can fly it too, as they're taking after their dad and becoming a damn good pilot.
Another (the middle child, Owen) is helping out B'Elanna (and later, Seven) with tech stuff, and he enjoys helping fix the ship. You'd be amazed how fast a quadrupedal lizard can run through Jeffries Tubes and fix a plasma coupling.
The third (the youngest, Shannon) is an artist and a musician, and is closest to her "godfather", Harry. She's not sure she wants to join Starfleet like her siblings, but she's still happy to help out when she can. She's doing some training with Tuvok as it seems Future Humans have some empathic abilities, and hers are strong enough to need practice to be able to control.
There's a subplot in some random episode where Mark is unsure how they fit in with (modern) humans, and decides they don't fit the gender binary. The Doctor rattles off a long list of species with more than two genders, and he mentions humans. Mark then decides their gender is "lizard" and uses they/them pronouns for the rest of the show. They keep the name Mark for now, commiserating with The Doctor about having a placeholder name until you can figure our your True Name. The gets referenced in one of the future segments of Endgame, where it's revealed that The Doctor has taken the given name "Mark", but it's not revealed what name (if any) Mark has changed to.
Speaking of Endgame, Shannon is on Vulcan helping take care of Tuvok. She's become quite a good doctor by then.
And Owen... didn't make it. He died on the long trip back, valiantly saving the whole ship from a destabilized warp core on the verge of rupture, but took a lethal dose of radiation in the process. Janeway held him in her arms as he died, and she posthumously gave him a promotion to lieutenant, first class. It's one of the things that drive her to go back in time and get Voyager home sooner, and can you really blame her?
Mark's teaching at the academy, after they'd enrolled to make their enlistment official. They barely made it a semester before they were being asked to help teach classes, and then eventually just running half the navigational and piloting divisions. Half of Starfleet wants them as a pilot for new missions to uncharted space, but for now they're staying close to home. Dad is so proud. Their little (half) sister Miral Paris likes to gently rib them over this, pointing out that she's probably gonna end up becoming a full Captain before Mark even gets out of the Academy. Mark points out they could have graduated years ago, but they need to stay here and train the next generation of Starfleet pilots, or Captain Miral Paris's first mission will end real quick when some badly trained ensign accidentally flies them into a black hole.
(Momma Janeway, of course, likes to point out that their dad already DID fly into a black hole, and he even managed to fly out of it afterwards. Miral and Mark both agree that the physics on that one doesn't make much sense, so they're not sure how much they believe that.)
Basically I just want to radically reimagine most of Voyager from Threshold onward, first in small ways with the lizard babies being a small background element and occasional B-plot, but then having their role grow until they're regulars, on even footing with the main cast, appearing in A-plots and having plots of their own dominate an episode.
I get why the show couldn't manage having full-time cast members who are fully CGI, it was 27 years ago after all. But that's no limitation for writing, and besides: we've got Janeway appearing on a fully computer generated show now! We could totally have the Threshold Kids as primary characters.
There'll also be a crossover episode taking place in the primary (no-threshold-babies on board) timeline. It's after voyager, and more importantly after DS9. Janeway and Chakotay are relaxing on earth, having made it safely back home, when they get a vision. The missing-in-action former captain of Deep Space Nine has learned about what happened, and he is pissed. At first he's angry at Janeway for leaving her children behind, no matter the circumstances of their birth, but then he learns it was Chakotay who made the decision (Janeway was too busy being a lizard at the time). His anger is only mostly redirected, as Janeway had every chance to turn around the ship and go back and get them once she'd been cured. He talks to them about the importance and duty of being a parent, and both Janeway and Chakotay agree... They messed up. Janeway wishes she could fix it. The Sisko ask her if she really means that, and when she confirms it, he smiles. You never left them behind, you know. Chakotay made the right choice and when you had the chance, you agreed with him. The Sisko fades away, and six years sideways Tuvok and a younger Chakotay are staring at a pond on some unnamed alien world, having just zapped Lizard!Paris and Lizard!Janeway with a phaser. They see a light on their faces as they go into an Orb of the Prophets Vision , and The Sisko, official demi-god and prophet of Bajor, gives them a direct order. They are to bring those babies on board their ship, because Starfleet is about discovering new life and new civilizations and THERE IT SWIMS. Voyager is a family, and it's a family that just got bigger. He holds the lizard babies in his arms for a moment, even if only in the vision, and he's so proud of them. The Sisko has always loved babies, and the number of Bajorans who have reported having unprompted Orb Visions in the days after they give birth is becoming a bit of an epidemic. (For what it's worth, they're very happy about it. It's a great blessing after all. Imagine you just gave birth and Jesus or Moses shows up in a vision to tell you your baby is very cute and is going to grow up big and strong. You'd probably take that as a good omen, you know?)
Back in 2372, Chakotay and Tuvok agree. The rest of the episode is altered: Janeway and Paris have a brief talk in the med-bay, then go down to Cargo Deck 2 to see their kids swimming in the little artifical pond that Kes and Tuvok set up for them. Neelix is there, trying to feed them small spoonfuls of Feragoit goulash. They don't know what to make of Tuvok and Chakotay's report of getting a vision that told them to bring the babies on board, but they agree it was the right choice, even if it's going to be a challenge raising three babies on a starship this far from home. The episode ends with one of the babies missing the spoon entirely and latching onto Neelix's thumb, and Paris and Janeway laugh.
His high-pitched screaming echoes through the ship as we cut to the view of Voyager flying through the stars, and the card "Executive Producer Rick Berman" pops up on screen. As if on cue, the screams get louder.

Love it as long as a translation happens either within the fic, or in the author's notes so I know what it says. I use the Vulcan language a fair bit in my Trek fics.

Technically it was Harry Potter before I knew what fanfiction even was. But it was Supernatural when I knew it was fanfiction I was writing, and it was the first fandom I posted fic for. My first fic: Acceptance (Supernatural)

So, the current state of affairs...
The settlement's in pretty much its final shape. A few of the original buildings are still hanging around, but they're almost solely used for utility.
All the living area stuff is clustered around the rec hall. Everyone's got their very own Extremely Impressive bedroom, except the Thavon/Josefin/Payne polycule, who still share one. Still in the process of making rugs for all of them. Toward the right is the new hospital, and past that, the new guest rooms. There are now six paid guest rooms of roughly the same quality as the ones the actual members have, and the old rec room has been converted to free/cheap shared guest rooms. 18 guest beds, 8 hospital beds, and 4 prisoner beds, and at times most of those are full.
There's also a kill pacification-of-new-friends box to the south, since everything's walled in now. Apart from the spotlight, those are all tranq turrets off to the right. The lack of traps + lack of battle animals or mechs + use of nonlethal weapons means that fights are still pretty dicey in here, even with the raid difficulty set at like 50%.
Out of the 22 factions on the planet, 5 are allies, 5 more are neutral, and the rest are hostile. Not bad progress. Unfortunately, one of the factions...
... is perma-hostile, and can't be reasoned with. Nothing I've been able to do by fucking around in dev mode or anything can change this, so I think that probably Bandits don't have a generator for non-hostile pawns. Some other groups are like that, and thus can never be non-hostile. I thought I'd disabled them all at the game start, but guess I missed one.
So the Dancing Flock is gonna bring peace to the planet apart from these very stubborn bandits.
Aelanna "Anna" Cessara
Still not much to say about her. Anna spends all day cooking, gardening, and doctoring. Anna and Josefin have been close friends pretty much the entire time, and if it weren't for the penalties for non-human anatomy, they'd definitely be banging by now. Josefin is literally her only friend.
Josefin Xiontara
Just look at her. With 18 Shooting, an archotech arm, and the Askbarn bonuses, she's great in a shootout on the rare occasion that she gets to use an actual weapon. As it is she just makes masterwork furniture all day. You'd think that with double passion for Crafting she'd be great at it by now, but this group's needed so much construction that it's just about a full-time job.
Josefin actually gets along really well with almost everyone. She doesn't even hold a grudge against Saio for her still-broken nose. However, there's one exception: Sonia. That sassy little brat can't get enough of insulting her.
Erika Belsaas
She's now the group's Scalpelizer, their official super-doctor, so she's pretty much running the hospital. That, research, and getting high accounts for pretty much her entire day.
Similarly to Josefin, Erika likes everyone. Unlike Josefin, almost nobody likes her back that much. Erika really likes insulting people. Not sure what that's about, since there's no reason she should. But, while Erika considers about half the group to be her friends, only two of them actually think of her as a friend back. Presumably everybody else isn't fond of being compared to ungainly animals by a stoned moose.
Stork Saio
Saio's still the group's official artist, and he's damn good at it. (Apart from the Really Nice Pants incident.) He's pretty much constantly making sculptures these days. His melee skill... well, he still gets to use it sometimes, but I try to keep him and Payne out of combat when I can. They're too kill-y.
Saio only really likes Payne and Josefin, and barely has an opinion on anybody else. This includes Trav, who's his lone romantic option as a gay guy. For now, at least.
Thavon Rovon
Being the local mechanitor really should be a big deal, but this isn't a group that has a lot of use for, say Centipede Blasters. I probably should start progressing through the mechtech tree a bit, though. Thavon's melee skill is pointless. She's the group's second-best crafter, so she gets saddled with making a lot of the 'it's nice to have quality but I don't really care' stuff like clothes, and she trades off research duties with Erika.
Thavon's married to Payne, of course. Thavon's up there with Josefin in being pretty close with the whole group. ... except Josefin. Somehow these two have shared a bedroom and Payne for like half a year and they have basically no opinion of each other. I'd blame the fact that Josefin's always running around doing construction and Thavon spends all day in the workshop, but... so does Payne.
Willow Payne
20 melee hell yeah. Also, in addition to the combat aura and flight powers, Nephilim also have Lay On Hands, which is an instant wound-mending, similar to the one Sanguophages get. That's been such a fucking godsend for this whole hospital thing, because somebody can walk in half-dead and Payne just zaps them back into one piece. Payne's good at enough stuff that she stays pretty busy.
Married to Thavon, sleeping with Josefin, etc. Payne is so fucking pretty that most of the colony loves her, but she's only fond of a few people in return. And, she's the one person to outright hate someone. She cannot stand Saio. -41 relationship. She'd get a mood boost if he died. I think they have general low compatibility, but the two also got into a fight a while back. Since they're two melee monsters, it did not go well for anybody involved, and Payne ended up on the floor with about half her bones broken. She's holding a grudge.
Travis "Trav" Roth
Trav... isn't good at a lot, but another shooter is nice, and his weird fox powers are pretty handy in combat. The Animals skill would be great, if this group had any use for war animals. As it is, I've assigned Trav to handle the group's Gauranlen tree. It makes little fighty plant guys, don't worry about it. Getting some melee tanks out of it. Anyway yeah he spends about 6 hours a day pruning a magical tree because he isn't good at much else.
Trav's got it rough. He considers Payne, Thavon, and Anna to be friends, but none of them like him in return. The only person who does consider him a friend is somebody that Trav moderately dislikes.
Sonia Pseugite
Listen... she's 11. She's working on it. She got garbage growth at 10, thanks to showing up when she was already partway through that age bracket. She also got intensely unlucky though--she hit 10 right when she was literally about 20 in-game minutes away from ticking up to the next growth level, which would have given her another passion. As it is... I gave her a gun and she's been pitching in as a junior nurse, so hopefully some day she'll be good at something except digging. Right now she's like some kind of mole racial stereotype.
Sonia really likes Payne. Literally nobody likes Sonia. Nobody really hates her either. Not sure why that is. She's new, but she's not that new, compared to...
Luis "Silver" Vital
Okay look yes I never announced Silver when he showed up. He arrived here as a pirate, and a 7-flame Genie who was only a teenager was just too good to pass up. I mean, that Crafting is the main draw though. As soon as he arrived I put him in charge of making charge weapons for everyone who can shoot. They don't need them often, but when they need to fight, they need actual guns.
Despite being a socially-inept newcomer, Silver's friends with most of the group already. He's even the closest thing Sonia has to a friend.

I have lots to say about S07E23 Preventative Medicine but my document was swelling with analysis of this one line from Hawkeye, and I want to write a whole post about it for a very particular reason.
I've often expressed my frustration at the show being wishy-washy with its anti-army messaging in the later years or not doing right by the Hawkeye character by either softening his opposition to the army or making him say straight up OOC shit. And I've talked broadly about the show doing the same thing in general, saying stuff that I think is OOC for MASH - it's hard to give specific examples because they're so numerous and dispersed.
So when I stumbled upon this one example of I think, very good characterization of Hawkeye that is particularly rich yet distilled nicely in a single line of his dialogue and then masterfully camouflaged by the show's tone and Alan Alda's comedic acting chops, I wanted to point it out. I realized, this- this is why I get so cagey about the poor, inconsistent writing on the show in the later years, because when it is good, it is so fucking good. And Hawkeye is so, so, so fucking good:
Hawkeye: Colonel, you left out a lot of good stuff. What about "Into the Valley of Death" or "Remember the Alamo" or the ever-popular "Damn the Torpedos!"
Lacey: Doctor, why do you just take care of these brave men?
Hawkeye: "I have not yet begun to fight!"
Just before this, BJ does call Lacey's speech "disgusting" which is gutsy, for BJ. I have to say "for BJ" because to be fair to him, anyone will have a hard time looking gutsy next to Hawkeye (with the exception of Klinger, more on that someday)
Anyway, Hawkeye elevates it from the obvious and situates Lacey’s actions within a broader system of military incompetence leading to senseless death. He makes no less than four historical references:
“Into the Valley of death” From Alfred Tennyson’s poem about the Crimean War, which similarly glorifies the high death toll rather than condemns it. Important to note that Tennyson’s poem is in the same spirit as Lacey’s speech and both Hawkeye and the writers of this episode know that. An aside regarding the poem: Because I am so continually gutted and angered by any positive framing and re-framing of Rudyard Kipling, in the world, but particularly in this fandom, I will be the first to point out that Kipling later wrote “The Last of the Light Brigade” in conversation with Tennyson’s poem. It's not that difficult to find out. Yes, Kipling's "transformative" poem is about the hardships faced by veterans (a departure from Tennyson's poem) and no I don’t think that’s enough to see past Kipling’s extraordinary racism and white-supremacist artistic accompaniment to the brutality of British Colonialism waged upon my ancestors and millions of other people's ancestors - the effects of which are still felt deeply to this day by us as individuals, our communities and are imbued in the systems that oppress us. That should always be at the forefront of Rudyard Kipling's legacy, regardless of context.
“Remember the Alamo” - a similar “last stand” often framed and re-framed as being a brave sacrifice. A favourite war story of the American canon.
“Damn the Torpedos!” you don’t have to live like a refugehhh both Hawkeye and Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers are referencing a quote attributed to US Navy commander, Admiral David Farragut, although it’s doubtful he actually said it, the meaning of the quote remains: charge forward even if you’re likely to die in your attempt. Farragut was a decorated career army man who fought in multiple wars and after his death in the late 1800s became a mascot for the US Navy and his likeness was used on WWI and WWII propaganda posters, urging citizens to sign up. I think Hawkeye and the writers are aware of this too.
After Lacey tries to remind Dr. Pierce MD that he is in fact a doctor not a soldier (cries in the Hawkeye Pierce complex) Hawkeye exclaims “I’ve not yet begun to fight!" – that’s John Paul Jones during the American Revolution while appearing to have lost a battle at sea with the British. He succeeded, but it's worth noting that the ship he was in command of, the Bonhomme Richard, sustained such damage, it sunk.
That is a lot for barely 20 seconds of dialogue.
Hawkeye being anti-army isn’t just broadly true of him. It’s packed very densely into these kinds of lines (of which I'm sure there are many) and then dressed up in theatrics. Alan Alda hams it up here and I love it, because it highlights how vapid and fake military propaganda and nationalist refrains are.
If you’re not familiar with the references he’s making and the analysis of them that I've laid out here/other facts associated with them, then they might just land as a “haha, Hawkeye is such a funny guy” perhaps with some vague awareness that he doesn’t like Lacey.
It's very hard for me to accept anything less from this show, and from Hawkeye in particular, when you have examples of how concentrated and deep his rage and passion runs.

I was fully aware that the average internet user is unable to identify doctored/photoshopped images.
I was fully aware the average internet user is unable to identify edited videos.
And I see both happen ALL. THE. DAMN. TIME. Some feel so blatantly obvious it leaves me scratching my head.
The number of people who are actually able to identify signs is small in the grand scheme of things; they're such a small percentage of the whole wide web. Most are going to dabble or work in image and video editing or processing of some sort. I include digital artists in this category too. You learn to recognize things once you've used them before.
I've grown up seeing how images and videos get manipulated firsthand. I've personally played with PS and other editing software for countless, countless hours.
People can easily be fooled.
The unbelievable number of posts that use filters, CG, cuts, or just general editing magic that most people DO NOT and CANNOT figure out is gargantuan.
The problem now arises when there are REAL photos or videos and people are SCRAMBLING to call them cgi or edited or photoshopped or, I consider the most heinous, AI. Misinformation is more rampant than ever because people cannot pick the two apart, and the quality of media that has been falsified or tampered with is only going to become more and more indistinguishable.

Aw, thanks^^ But I can't take that credit (never have, never will). It's not me who 'brings' the Korrasami art, it's the artists - whom I always tag first in my reblogs 😁
But see? this is why rebloging/sharing is so important, to spread others' talent and make it seen by more people that like it as well. And to credit the right source is equally important so - as much as I aprecciate the compliment (at least, I take it as such) - please, let the real creators know how much you like and appreciate their work.

Okay anon, you asked for it! Long answer ahead because you just asked about my favs and I'm such a broken record about'em!
Also, I apologize in advance because this is going to look like fic recs and I don't know if you asked for that, specifically. But these ARE, indeed, some of my most favorite korrasami works (as for as fanfiction is concerned lol)
From the top of my head this are the ones I can't stop reading (a.k.a. I've read more than once)
It goes without saying, lanagotconed20's Road Trip series is at the top of that list. Specifically, I remember part 9 , 'All In, All Yours' being one I almost know by heart💘 but seriously, you can't go wrong with ANY of Lana's stories. They're all fantastic, and I actually did a ranking of her works to date (the complete ones, at least) a few months back, here
@hohfics Marriage or Bust has 2 complete works (same universe different paths) and damn, what masterpieces!🤩
I couldn't possibly decide between them because both are incredibly well written and convey so much emotion! Plus, there's moments on both stories that get your heart racing (either because of how intensely romantic or frightening they are) But from the two I have to give a shoutout to 'The Honeymooners' for being the very first Korrasami fic I ever read - a really high bar that I'm elated to know has been met by many great authors!
ireallyshouldnt_behere's 'Would you risk it ALL?' is a doctor au, with Korra being a cancer patient and it's fine if you're not into that but, just so you know, amongst the medical drama aspect of it there's many fun and heart warming moments and quite the satisfying ending - well, technically not an ending since is the first part of a series, but it's not complete, and the second part hadn't hooked me as much as this one. But the author has other korrasami works you may want to check out 😉
The Seeking Balance trilogy by @simplykorra is the best canon-divergence fic I've read! The way Korra's struggles and traumas are depicted through these stories (specially, the first two parts is MIND. BLOWING. and though I couldn't recommend one story more than the others (the journey is best experienced from start to finish), there's something so heart wrenching about the second part, 'Relapse' (as if the tittle didn't pull you in deeply enough) that just makes me point it out - if only to read Korra's parting letter to Asami at the end of that story. It squeezes my heart every time I read it and I can only imagine Asami's anger, sadness and fear as she reads it.
This is without a doubt my favorite 'what if' korrasami fic and I can't thank the author enough for the way it turned out! 😄👏
Last, but not least, my latest discovery/obsession is *drum rolls* @greatestchange Roll with the Punches series, it isn't complete (yet) but there's tons of top-notch content amongst the 10 works it has written by now. It is my latest reading and it easily skyrocketed to the top of my fav korrasami works, I'm still in shock!🤯
But this series comes with a *warning sign* as it is the most painful, intense, gut-punching stuff I've ever read. Some of these works, e.g the main tittled story, and the ones I'm about to be mentioned are basically "angst turned up to 11".
I gave a brief description of my experience reading that one here, if you want better understand what I think/feel about it (my opinion holds up to this day!) plus, you can check out my rwtp tag for some really good art and a few highlighted passages of certain chapters that got to me very deeply.
One tip though, I can't recommend enough that you read the main RWTP first before reading certain other works, namely 'Senna', 'Nebraska', 'The Offer', 'Family Reunion' and 'Shattered' (all in that order).
But in case you want to read some of the 'lighter' ones (and I use that word loosely because they're all intense in some way or another), some I really enjoyed reading, besides the unskippable ones are 'Say You'll Be There', 'The Assistant' and 'The Fire Place'(ch. 7 of Afterward, which is a collection of snippets). These latter works are one-shots but give you a good taste of the main story without being the main story.
I know, I know, that's a lot of reading but I really hope you get around to check at least some of these and maybe leave a comment on them. Let the authors know of your thoughts, they all deserve to know how much they're appreciated and a simple 'I love this story/your work' are never small words!
And I should've said this before, but since I don't know how old you are, please check the rating and tags of the stories since there's very mature stuff in there.
Road Trip, I think is the more PG of these literary creations, and by far the one with the most fluff out of these, but honestly - with over 30 works made - it has something to please all kinds of tastes. Though, is not excent of explicit content. But trust me, it's absolutely NOT in bad taste and very organic.
RWTP, I'd say is the extreme opposite with almost zero room for 'fluff' and, by FAR, the most mature series of them all (it deals with lots of heavy topics), but while most of the time you get pain instead of pleasure, the moments you spot the latter are that much, much sweeter, and in my experience they're more than worth it to reach!
And as far as AU's go, those two along with Marriage or Bust, are must-reads for any Korrasami shipper.

They're all workaholics so they get sent on an enforced break - the retreat. Nobody is pumped about this. Obi-Wan stoically (sarcastically) endures. Rex is so damn tired. Fox really couldn't care less. Quinlan only comes because Fox is there. And Cody just wants some peace and quiet. Ahsoka and Padmé are probably the only sane ones there.

idk if this will add or subtract or just mean nothing at all but fwiw I think a lot of people who said "it's both" probably didn't mean it in That Way. I don't think Scully ever wanted to ditch and I don't see how anyone over the age of like...10...could watch the show and honestly think that? They're both so stupid [affectionate] and Scully definitely knows it and literally relishes it! I just think anyone with a sideeye/facepalm game that strong is probably looking at their beloved idiot sometimes and thinking "you. why." It doesn't necessarily mean they're not happy to be there! She said "I'd kiss you if you weren't so damn ugly" and that was definitely one of The Most things she could possibly say no matter what body he's in! Then again where I'm originally from a friend's affection can be directly measured in how deadpan teasingly mean they are so something like "my daddy wanted me to be a doctor and instead I'm here" or "I should have become a nun" would actually be a huge compliment. Like that's basically saying ily without actually saying ily. So idk maybe something just got lost in translation for some peeps?

i did get to my lecture and it was so great, thank you so much!! i love you!! i totally see what you're saying, and i think most people were just joking, or it did get lost in translation, but it still just leaves a bad taste in my mouth? to forward that line of thinking at all? i also find it disrespectful to roz, as an artist, to look at something that they invested in creating and rag around in their notes going completely against the point they were trying to make. i totally see how that was frustrating to them, people do the same thing on my writing, totally bypassing what i'm trying to say to argue logistics, and it sucks? like it feels like people don't even care to think about what i'm trying to say? roz also mentioned here about how as someone who relates to mulder, it's offensive to see people view him as not worth listening to, or a burden. and it's true! there's nothing wrong with the theories he has (he's almost always right, but regardless) or the way he shares with scully, and scully loves it! why confront that concept on someone else's work? the first piece was clearly derogatory and portraying scully as disinterested or annoyed or wishing for something else, which isn't true!! roz is right, it's not what the x-files is!!
