The Gotham Ghost Pt. 1
This is not how he thought things would go. After the reality gauntlet Danny thought everything would turn out okay when he finally revealed himself. He was wrong.
One thing he neglected to consider was the two times his identity was revealed were life or death situations. Situations where they had to rely on him in order to survive. This was not one of those times. It was stupid really, he was just so tired and he wasn’t paying attention. He walked into the kitchen and made himself breakfast like he did every morning. He didn’t see his mom sitting at the table. She did see him phase his hand through the cabinet. Before he even turned around he was hit in the back with a shot from an ecto gun. He knew his parents could be cold, he knew they could be neglectful. He didn’t think they would be so cruel. He ran through the house, grabbing the bug out bag Jazz insisted he pack and he ran, he ran far and he ran fast, his parents hot on his tail. He ran to the one place he knew the boo-merang couldn’t find him.
Gotham
He’d lost count of the amount of times his parents complained about Gotham. Apparently it generated massive amounts of interference which distorted low levels of ectoplasm. Which meant that so long as he didn’t overdo it with his powers in his human form, and didn’t transform, they shouldn’t be able to track him. So he took buses and hitchhiked his way to Gotham, found a condemned building to squat in and, just to be safe, hid his bag in the walls. The first time someone tried to rob him was pretty fun. He was walking down an alley when some guy held a gun to his back, demanding he hand over his wallet. Danny slowly turned around allowing a light green glow to coat his eyes, his skin began to pale as the muggy temperature slowly begins to drop as he eyes and teeth begin to sharpen. The would be mugger slowly tries to back away when Danny charges, going right through him and stealing HIS wallet in turn before taking off while he was on the ground panicking. It happens a few more times before rumors start to circulate that Gotham is haunted. Nothing out of the ordinary, nothing to truly catch the bats attention, until robin goes missing.
Danny is minding his own business, heading back to his hideout when he comes across the little bird, it appears he bit off a little more than he could chew this time as a massive man slowly corners the brightly colored vigilante. Danny stops and weighs his options. He likely wouldn’t kill the little bird, incurring that level of wrath from the bat would count as suicide. But looking at the downed kid he lets out a long cold sigh, he knew he couldn’t walk away. He pushed his ghostly nature to the front as much as he dared as he slowly made his way down the alley, stretching his shadow out until it reached the end of alley. He speaks with a shattered voice tinged with a hollow echo that reverberates through the alley “Walk away.” The large man quickly turns and gasps when he sees the apparition “Diablo de ojos verdes” but he steadies himself and charges towards the specter..only to was right through him sending an icy wave through his body. Danny doesn’t move he just slowly turned his head around, making sure it cracks as it turns bringing out his fangs as he gives a wide toothy grin and says “run” he fully turns around and starts to move towards the masked giant. He was gone before Danny made it to the end of the alley. Danny gives a out a relieved sigh, he really didn’t want to fight, before release if his ghostly state and turning back to the fallen bird.
He tries to wake the kid, because that is most definitely a kid, with little success. Danny looks around trying to see if he can catch sight of the bat to no avail. Danny lets out a loud groan knowing there was no way he was leaving an injured kid knocked out in alleyway in Gotham, there are sooo many ways that could go wrong. So with some slight struggling he managed to get the kid on his back and headed back to his hideout.
When he gets there he lays him down on his makeshift bed, wincing at the blood that he just KNEW was going to stain. Oh well it’s not like it was anything new. He pulls out his limited supplies and makes a note to pick up more bandages. Once he finishes dressing the kids wounds he’s starts packing up everything ha can and pulls up his go bag. He’s just finishing when the kids starts to stir. Danny grabs his last bottle of water and brings it over to the kid. “Take it easy little bird, you took quite a beating back there.” The bird immediately reaches up to check his mask “I’m not an asshole, your honor is intact don’t worry.” He looks around at the dingy building before looking at his apparent rescuer “who are you?”
“Me? I’m nobody, just a ghost. Now drink your water, I need to head out before your bat dad comes charging in.” Robin snorts the water “I’m sorry my what?!” He laughs.
Danny looks at him like he’s lost it “Your bat dad, the furry that goes around fighting crime with you?” At this point Robin has rolled off the makeshift bed laughing and is holding his bruised ribs “Oh god please stop, it hurts, your killing me.” Danny grins “Well at least your sense of humor is intact.”
Danny sets down his bag.
“What we’re you doing fighting that guy by yourself anyway?” At this Robin looked more than a little offended. “Don’t give me that look, I may not have been here for long but even I know who Bane is and I know that even the Bat has a hard time fighting him. So what possessed you to try doing it by yourself.” Robin gives a huff and looks away.
“It was just a simple robbery, how was I supposed to know it was a trap?” Robin looked dejected “One I walked right into.” Danny sat down next to the smaller hero. “Look you’ve been doing this for how long?” Robin looks at him “about a year now” Danny nods “So you’ve been doing this for one year, ONE, and you fell for a trap meant for Batman, who’s been doing this a heck of a lot longer than you have. Honestly I’m impressed, I only came in at the tail end of it but it’s pretty obvious you held your own better than most. That’s something to be proud of. Don’t get me wrong I don’t think you should be out fighting at all, but at the very least I know you can handle yourself.” The two continued to chat and eventually they were joined by a third. Danny didn’t notice the newest addition, but Robin did and he slowly maneuvered to block the only other exit. It was then that Danny noticed the bat and sighed “You were stalling.” Robin had the decency to look a little ashamed as he said “Yeah, sorry about that.”
He turned towards the bat “I haven’t done anything illegal and I wasn’t the one who hurt your bird, so I’ll just be on my way okay.” Batman narrowed his eyes and held up one of the stolen wallets “OH come on! Who hasn’t stolen a few wallets?! Besides they tried to rob me first!”
“I’m not coming after you for a few wallets, however there is a noticeable pattern among the wallets stolen.” Danny scoffed “and would you like to share with the class?” Batman slowly approached the teen, stopping when Danny too a step back. “All of the wallets belong to people who have claimed to have seen the Gotham Ghost.” Danny starts to take deep breaths, his eyes widening. “Look I haven’t hurt anybody, okay!?! I just needed a place to stay for a bit, sure I took their wallets, but I needed food! They were threatening to kill me!” Batman motions for Danny to calm down as he continues his approach, Danny slowly backing into a wall. “I already said you’re not in trouble for the wallets. I just want to make sure you’re doing okay. I can help you get home, I’m sure your parents are looking everywhere for you, worried—”
“Oh they’re looking for me alright, but they’re not worried. They’re the ones hunting me.” Batman froze, looking towards Robin. He looked back at Danny he came to a decision “I have a safe house near here that you can stay in for the night. If you’re still there in the morning, a man will come by in the morning and we can see about getting you a more permanent residence.” Danny looked at Batman, shocked, before asking “Why?” Batman shook his head and said, “Because you need help.” With that he moves over to Robin and picks him up. He gives Danny a slip of paper with an address on it. “If you’re interested go to this address.” And the two left. Danny sat down and stared at the paper thinking over his options.
————-
Batman gently sets Robin down in the batmobile before getting on his side. Once they are both settled and the hood is up the two head back to the cave. Dick looks down at his knees in shame “I’m sorry, I should have waited.” Bruce gives a soft sigh before placing a hand on Dicks head “You’re right, but what matters right now is that you’re okay. We can go over protocol another day, for now let’s get you looked at.”
Dick looks back at Bruce “and what about Ghost?” Bruce raises an eyebrow. “Don’t look at me like that you know who I mean, he didn’t tell me his name and he sure as heck didn’t tell you it either.”
“For now, if he decides to take the offer, he can stay at the safe house. Tomorrow Bruce Wayne will come to him on Batman’s behalf and try to set him up in foster care.” Dick gives a slight hum “Y’know you could do that or…” Bruce glances over at Dick “or what?” Dick gets an excited look on his face “I’ve always wanted a big brother!”
—————-
The next day found Danny waking up on one of the most comfortable mattresses in his life. He walked into the kitchen and made himself coffee and a half burned omelette (progress!) and sat down to eat. After he finished his meal he pulled out everything in his big out bag to determine what is still usable and what needed to be replaced. After all it’s not like Batman doesn’t clearly have the money to replace a few bandages. It was as he was packing everything back up that there was a knock at the door. Danny sighed before opening the door to reveal… a rich guy, great. “Are you the guy Batman sent?” He asks as he steps aside to let the stranger in.
“You could say that, my name is Bruce Wayne and this is a halfway house that I set up with Batman as a way to help get kids, like yourself, off the streets.” Danny scoffed “Off the streets to where, foster care? No thanks, I’m trying to stay off of the governments radar if you don’t mind.”
“Foster care is an option, there’s also private adoption. Could you share anything about why you don’t want the government knowing where you are?” Danny raised a skeptical eyebrow “I don’t see how any of that matters to you, look I’ll be out of your hair by the end of the day, so just forget about it.” There was something off about this guy.
“I’m not trying to push you out of the apartment, I only want to make sure you have somewhere safe to go and someone looking after you, you won’t have that on the streets.” He said with a frown.
“Yeah, no shit Sherlock!” Danny was starting to get annoyed with this guy, and why did he feel so familiar!! “But that doesn’t mean I’m going to put someone else in danger just so I can feel safe! Look I’m grateful for the offer I really am, but no.” Danny gets up and heads for the door despite Bruce’s protests. “Thank you for letting me stay the night, if all goes well, I won’t be seeing you around.” Bruce grabs Danny by the shoulder and holds out a business card.
“Just think about it, if you change your mind you can reach me anytime.” Danny reluctantly took the card before leaving.
——-
Bruce sat down for a second “Well that went well.” He said with a sigh before touching something behind his ear. “Is the tracker activated?”
“Good news and bad news!” Dick replied “The good news is the tracker is working great!” Bruce sighed, looking to the heavens “and the bad news?” Dick let’s put a laugh “The bad news is it never left the apartment.” Bruce scrunched his brow, ‘This may be more complicated that we thought.’
——-
After leaving the apartment Danny went in search of a new place to stay, as there was no way he was going back to that apartment. He was passing by the Gotham cemetery looking at the card he was given when he heard someone call out to him.
“You should take him up on his offer dear.”
Danny turned to face the woman sitting on a gravestone. “Oh? And pray tell why should I trust him? He’s just another rich weirdo looking for something to gain. As far as he’s concerned I’m just some charity case, he’ll put me in a home and that will be that. For me though? I can only hide so much.” He sighs “I’m tired of hiding.”
“Hmmm, that sounds like quite the conundrum….Walk with me?” She says with a secretive smile. Danny snorts “A gorgeous gal like you? How can I refuse?” Danny steps into the cemetery and breathes in the morning dew.
“Even Gotham has its moments, don’t you think?” She said with an airy voice.
“You could say that. They’re rare that’s for sure but those few moments of peace….they’re worth the chaos.” He says with a soft smile before giving her a heavy sigh “Out with it, I know you want to say something. Probably something about how I should open myself up to new opportunities, or that not everyone is out to get me, or even that I can’t know that things will go wrong unless I try!” A soft giggle echos through the graves. “It seems to me you’ve already told yourself all those things… so what’s holding you back?” He sighs
“I just… I guess I’m scared, I don’t want to put myself in a situation where I can be hurt like that again.” He sighs rubbing the back of his neck with a soft grin. “Y’know this is what happens when your sister is a budding psychiatrist, you become way too self-aware.”
She gives him a soft laugh as she comes to a stop before a grave “There’s nothing wrong with knowing yourself. I think it’s time you take a leap of faith, and for what it’s worth Bruce is a good man. He’ll make sure you’re taken care of, but I may be a bit biased, just don’t forget to visit us every now and again. We all love having you come by.” Danny smiles
“And be deprived of your lovely company, never!” He chuckles “Thanks Ms. Martha, it was good talking to you. Tell your husband I said hi!” Danny turned to make his way back to the entrance, greeting wayward spirits as he passed. He wandered through the streets of Gotham thinking over everything, he looked at the night sky and saw the bat signal lighting up the night.
He had made his decision.
——————
He was in the process of taking a fresh patch of cookies out of the oven when Alfred heard the doorbell ring. Making sure to turn off the oven, he made his way to the entrance, curious to see who had come calling so early in the morning. After all Master Bruce was notorious for being late to rise and Master Dick was already at school for the day. Any…. other guests would attempt to make contact through the cave, not the front entrance. Perhaps a salesman? They so rarely get unexpected visitors, he made sure his shotgun was within reach before answering the door. What he found on the other side was oddly enough a young man, not much older than Master Dick, who appeared to be distracted by the manor grounds.
“How may I help you young sir?” The teen turned to face him and he was struck by tired blue eyes. They reminded him so much of Master Bruce at that age, tired and lost. He pulled out a card from his pocket before addressing him.
“I know he said, but uhh I don’t really have a phone.” He said with a wince. “I wasn’t really sure how else to get a hold of him.”
Alfred gave the teen a considering look “I’m afraid Master Bruce has not yet risen for the day.”
“Oh! Uh I see, I can come back later or not…”
Alfred gave a warm smile “I only just pulled a fresh batch of my famous chocolate chip cookies out of the oven. If you would like we could have some with a fresh pot of tea while we wait for him to wake.”
The teen visibly brightened at the mention of food, deeply worrying the aged butler. “That sounds fantastic!”
“Well then shall we?” He opened the door, motioning the boy inside “Might I have a name for our guest or shall that stay a mystery.” The teen paused looking at him.
“Danny. You can call me Danny.”
——-
Bruce found them in the lounge when he woke an hour later. Alfred was pouring a fresh cup of tea while their mysterious guest spoke, quite passionately, about the travesty of Plutos excommunication from planet hood.
“You know” he paused as the teen swiftly turned “I hear they’ve actually fixed that. Pluto is officially back on the roster.” The teen relaxes just slightly but does not let down his guard. Alfred gives him a LOOK “Now that Master Bruce has risen I shall take my leave for now, to prepare lunch. Young master Danny, will you be staying for the afternoon meal? I’m preparing a nice hearty stew.” Danny looked ready to start drooling, but looked towards Bruce. “That sounds fantastic, Danny and I will be in the office discussing some business.” He said, placing a hand on Danny’s shoulder. “Shall we?”
The two made their way through the manor, passing sculptures and artwork alike. When they arrive at the office Danny sees a large portrait of a rather familiar couple. ‘Oh yeah, definitely biased’ he thought
“My parents” Bruce explained after noticing Danny’s interest in the painting “Both were quite active in charities and trying to reform Gotham. The Martha Wayne orphanage fund has helped hundreds of children, like yourself, find new homes-”
“Cut the spiel. Look if I’m just a charity case to you, I’ll leave right now. The only reason I’m here to begin with is because a friend of mine said you’d be able to help.”
Bruce nodded “Alright then, I’ve been working on your paperwork. There wasn’t much I could do without your name, but I’ve managed to find a family in Fawcett City that’d be willing to take you in no questions asked. They have a good record and—”
“No”
Bruce wondered if he should still be surprised at this point “Okay, your other option is a young couple in Central City, they-”
“NO!” Bruce looks up from the papers on his desk, the teen in front of him looks seconds away from running out the door. “Okay, would you like to talk about why not?”
Danny paused for a moment “Look I’m sure they’re nice, but I’m not leaving Gotham, I won’t.” ‘I can’t’ he thought.
Bruce gave Danny a considering look. “I don’t have any families available in Gotham at the moment to take you in permanently.”
A slight shake of the head “That’s fine, all I really need it documentation so I can get a job, once I turn 18 I’m out of there anyway.” He said seriously.
Bruce thinks over all the families in Gotham he had looked over. Not many would be willing to work with the severe lack of trust, that coupled with the lack of documents and his options just shrank to the single digits. He could a migraine start to for when he hears the pounding footsteps of his ward racing down the halls. He has mere moments to process this before Dick burst the the door exclaiming “You won’t believe what happened at school today!” Danny twisted around at the intrusion and made eye contact with Dick for a few seconds before he awkwardly laughed. “Sorry to interrupt, I didn’t realize we had a guest.”
Bruce smiled at his ward “Danny this is my ward, Dick Grayson, who is supposed to be in school right now.” Dick gave a mischievous grin “That’s what I was just gonna tell you! You might get a letter explaining things, but there was a massive prank played by some upperclassmen. All of the alarms in the school went of for an hour before they decided to end things early. They were still going off when we left. I hitched a ride with one of my classmates, figured you might still be asleep and Alfred would be cooking.”
“Upperclassmen? Really? Well, I guess I’ll just have to talk to the school about upgrading their security if a few students can disrupt the whole school.” He says giving Dick a stern look, he just gave his signature laugh and replied “I guess so!” Neither of the two noticed Danny’s eyes widen just a fraction, before he schooled his features.
“We were just getting ready to head to the dining room for lunch, care to join us?” Bruce asks Dick raising an eyebrow. “Definitely!” He turns to Danny “Alfred cooks the best food, there’s nothing like it.” Danny indulges him a little as they make their way to the dining room, which was surprisingly already set for three. “Alfred always knows.” Dick says with a shrug. The three sit down making light conversation, Bruce dancing around the topic of his housing situation not wanting to scare him off. They start to talk about how Dick came to be in Bruce’s care.
“I’m still grateful that Bruce was able to take me in, at that point I had gone through so many foster homes they were planning to send me to an orphanage.” Danny nodded along “How old were you?”
“I was only eleven when my parents died, I was twelve when Bruce took me in, that was three years ago.” Danny gave a slight hum as he took a bite of his food. “And how old were you when you found out Bruce was a furry?”
Bruce choked, Dick spewed stew all over the table, Alfred sighed. Once Bruce managed to regain his composure he gave Danny a stern look “Care to explain? I think there’s been some sort of misunderstanding.”
“Gonna be honest, you definitely seemed familiar at first but I just couldn’t put my finger on it. It was Dick that gave it away, no offense but you have a very distinct laugh.” Bruce gave Dick a look, he just gave him a shrug “You try keeping a straight face as some guy talks about Batman being a furry.”
“Look I’m not gonna tell anyone, just wanted to get the awkward reveal out of the way. Last time I dealt with peoples secret identities my ex girlfriend shot me. Not something I’d care to repeat.” Bruce sighed “While I appreciate that, somehow I get the feeling that you aren’t doing this out of the goodness of your heart.” Danny smirked
“Think of it as incentive to keep me in Gotham, after all who know what I might talk about while I’m away?” Dick chuckled “Blackmailing the bat? Gutsy.”
He turned to Bruce “Can we keep him?” Bruce questioned his decisions on life. “He’s not a pet, he’s a living, breathing, human being.” Danny’s snort did not go unnoticed, something to investigate later. “Let’s head back to the office and see what we can work out. As for you young man, I’m certain they didn’t send you home without work to do, so you might want to get started on that.”
The two stayed in the office going through files on different programs and families. Danny shooting each one down, too religious, too many kids, to far from the area. They were getting ready to widen their search a bit when Alfred announced that dinner was ready. “Stay for dinner and if you’d like, you’re free to stay the night or take up residence at the apartment for the time being.”
“Thanks, I’d prefer the apartment if you don’t mind. It’s close to the cemetery, it’s peaceful there.” Bruce gives Danny a considering look
“Most people try to avoid cemeteries, they tend to hate being reminded of their mortality.” Danny just shrugs.
“I’m not afraid of dying, not when the living can be so much crueler.” Bruce looks at Danny sadly, wondering exactly what he’d been through.
Dick joined them for dinner and the three sat down, Danny trying and failing to convince Alfred to join them. They talked the whole meal, laughing and sharing stories. Bruce hadn’t seen Dick this happy in awhile, weighed down with more guilt and responsibility than any child his age should. He thought back to what Dick said that first night. Once they finished their meal Danny once more tried to fight with Alfred to take the dishes. A losing battle, Bruce knew, Alfred is relentless. He looked at the bright smile on Dick’s face and the argument between Danny and Alfred. He couldn’t help but agree with Dick, all that’s left to do is plan and ask.
They made it all the way to the door, Bruce trying to figure out how to broach the subject.
“Should I come back tomorrow, to keep working on the paperwork and stuff” Danny asked awkwardly
“You could or…” Danny looked up
“Or what?”
“You could stay, here, I could foster you.” Danny moves to object “Before you say no, I understand that you likely don’t want to be in public eye, we could put together some paperwork as far as anyone will be concerned you don’t exist. You don’t have to be my son if you don’t want to. You can think of this as just a place to stay, but I think… I think you could be happy here. Dick has already expressed his desire for a brother and Alfred would welcome the company. If you want to continue your schooling I could hire a private tutor or i could get you signed up for online classes. So what do you say?”
Danny looked at the ground thinking over everything Bruce said. He was tired of running, maybe, maybe Ms. Martha was right maybe he should take a chance on Bruce Wayne. He square his shoulders and looked Bruce straight in the eye.
“Yes”

Prompt 162
“So,” Danny drawled from where he was sitting, legs kicking slightly. Really, what a fun reincarnation. A world with heroes and villains where he didn’t have to do shit in and could just vibe with Ellie.
“So,” Tim responded from where he was typing on his computer, mostly in civilian clothes save for his gauntlets and boots. The Red Robin outfit was haphazardly dropped across the couch and his pole leaning against the end.
“Technically there’s proper procedures for clones…” Danny motioned to both himself and Ellie from where they sat on the counter, snacking on a plateful of scones. From Alfred, he was certain.
“Technically, yes… but do we want to actually do that?”
All three of them smiled, something almost feral in the motion. Of course not. They all had the same memories after all, and Bruce had just returned from the past, from exactly where and when Tim had said he was. Despite no one believing him, hence why they were in his boathouse, and not in the apartment or manor.
“Think we can pull it off?” Ellie took a sip of tea, mischief swirling in her eyes.
“Of course we can.” Both Danny and Tim spoke at once, one pulling up a new doc and the other pulling the whiteboard out from under a curtain.

Beg You to Love Me
"I'm surprised you even remembered, Harrington," Eddie shrugs, hoping he comes off as aloof as he wants to, instead of shaky and unsure like he feels. He was sitting atop the picnic table, arms behind him trying to look as unaffected by Steve's presence as he can, but he's been thrown for a loop ever since Steve emerged from the woods instead of Robin Buckley, like he was expecting.
"Of course, I remember. I- I've never forgotten," Steve whispers, head down and fists clenched at his sides. He looks more like a child being wrongfully scolded than a man defending himself.
The words pull a scoff from Eddie, though. Never forgotten? What the fuck ever. "Right. Something to hold over me, then, if I'd stepped too far out of line? Mutually assured destruction?"
Steve's head snaps up and he looks horrified, which Eddie will admit to almost believing. Steve doesn't seem like the type to join the drama club but his acting's pretty fucking good. "What? No! I would have never- I would never have said anything about us to anyone."
"Right. Sure. Of course. Your own reputation to think about there."
Something like hurt flashes across Steve's face before it frosts over. This is the face he's used to see on Steve. Cold and distant. "I- whatever, man. I don't even know why I thought..." but Steve doesn't finish his sentence. He just shakes his head and turns his back on Eddie, heading back the way he came.
He doesn't know why that sparks a rage from deep within him. "Yeah, that's right. Tuck tail and runaway again!"
"I ran away?" Steve shouts back, turning sharply on his heel to glare at Eddie. "You think that I ran away?"
Eddie just spreads his hands to the empty clearing as if to say 'look at all this room around me you've never occupied'. "You weren't here, were you?"
"Because you told me to not be!" Steve stomps back to Eddie but stops a couple yards away.
"Like fuck I did," Eddie argues back, because he didn't tell Steve to go away. He'd told him-
"'If this isn't good enough for you, there's the fucking door.' That's what you told me," Steve quotes, "I thought it was pretty fucking clear what you wanted."
"Yeah, I fucking thought it was clear what I wanted," Eddie snarls, lunging from the picnic table, closing those last few feet to get into Steve's face. "Yet here we are!"
"Don't act like this is my fucking fault. Like you weren't the one who forced it to be my fault. My decision-"
"Yeah, it had to be your damn decision! You were dragging it out-"
"-because you were too much of a coward to do it your-fucking-self-"
"-acting like you were. Acting too good to actually slum it with the trailer trash-"
"-so of course I made the choice that was best for me. Because I deserved more-"
"-like what I had to offer you would never be good enough for the goddman King-"
"-than just being your hookup when I wanted to be-"
"-like I wasn't good enough to be your friend, much less-"
"-your fucking boyfriend!"
"-your fucking boyfriend!"
The contrast of this sudden silence that falls following their screaming match that ends with identical sentiments is jarring. Eddie feels wrong-footed and lost. Confusion and hurt mixing in him that he can see reflected on Steve's face.
"What?" Steve is the first to break the silence, drawing into himself. Arms crossing to hold himself at the elbows as he takes several steps back, as if to be able to see all of Eddie will clear the confusion he's feeling.
Eddie just stares back, slack jawed for a moment. That's. What. No, wait. Really, what? "What what?"
"You- you said 'if this isn't good enough for you, there's the fucking door'. How was I- I thought you- you were breaking up with me!" Steve cries, "you. You said that to make me pick, because you knew I wanted more and you didn't. That's- you were breaking up with me!"
Eddie's in just as much disbelief. "No, you broke up with me! I said if this isn't good enough but, like, I meant if I wasn't good enough. And you left! You walked out because I wasn't good enough to be with you!"
Steve looks stricken and he claws harder at himself, sort of folds into himself like he's going to be sick. "No. No no no, that's- then that means I- it's all been my fault. No no no no."
Eddie stares wide-eyed and frozen as Steve talks to himself. Eddie kind of feels nauseous. There's no way that this is possible. That these last two and a half years of heartbreak have been because of miscommunication. That they both thought the other was breaking up with them and neither actually wanted to.
"Why didn't you- Why didn't you say something?" Eddie asks.
Steve laughs at that, sounding a bit hysteric. "Me!? Why didn't you! I wasn't- I wasn't going to beg you to love me like I had with my parents. You were the one who told me I shouldn't have to do that!"
Yeah. He had. When Steve had broken down and cried on his bed, in his arms, wondering what it was he had done to lose his parents' love. Eddie told him it wasn't his fault, never would be, and that he would never need to beg for love from someone who does love him. It was the same advice Wayne had given him when he'd taken Eddie in.
"I already thought you were wanting to break up. You were being so distant, I thought..."
Steve sucks in a deep breath and nods, "Yeah. Yeah I was. I was scared of scaring you away. Of being too much. Because I- what I felt for you was a lot. I was afraid I'd chase you away if I continued to be so clingy. I pulled back, to reign it in but. Fuck. Fuck!"
Eddie drops to a squat. His legs feel like jelly and he can't keep standing. He squats and looks down so his hair becomes a curtain separating him from the reality of the situation, if only for a moment. Fuck is right.
He's spent his junior and first senior year being pissed at Steve. Hurt by him and what he thought happened. And it's- if Steve's being honest, it's all been for nothing. If they both wanted a deeper relationship, they could have had it. They might still be boyfriends if Eddie hadn't been so wrapped up in his Munson Doctrine. He'd been convincing himself Steve was embarrassed of him, and was working on breaking off their- whatever they were. But he hadn't been.
He's thought such terrible things about Steve over the years. God, what has Steve thought of him over the years? No. He doesn't want to know, actually. That's not what he cares about right now.
He lifts his head to see that Steve's plopped himself onto the ground, sitting cross legged, elbows on his knees and head in his hands.
"Steve. Steve!" He calls Steve's name out until he looks up, looks at him, "why'd you come out here?"
He laughs again, slightly less hysterically, and he's shaking his head like he can't believe what he's about to say. "I. Fuck, I was coming out here to beg you to love me."
"No you fucking weren't!" his tone is filled with disbelief.
"I was," Steve repeats, sounding amused and heartbroken at the same time. "I really, really was. Graduation's coming and I know you want to get out of Hawkins the second that happens and I'm. I was running out of time trying to get you to notice me again, so I was going to beg."
Notice him again? As if Steve doesn't haunt his every waking thought. As if he doesn't dream of Steve every night while his eyes seek him across the halls and in their few shared classes like he's the goddamn night sky and Eddie is a sailor lost at sea needing the north star to guide him home. Eddie's never not noticed him, and he thinks he has to come out here and beg? "When someone loves you, you don't have to beg."
"Yeah, I know," Steve sighs, defeated, which lets Eddie know that Steve does not, in fact, know. He looks away from Eddie, down to his lap.
Fuck, it's like every fantasy Eddie's had of them making up and then making out has been handed to him on a silver platter and he's blowing it. His words are too vague, too easily misinterpreted. Again. He falls forward on to his knees, hands catching him so he's on all fours like an animal. "Steve. I mean it. You don't have to beg."
"I get it, Eddie," Steve huffs, not looking at him. Not actually understanding.
Eddie starts to crawl the distance between them. Steve looks up then, probably to see what the fuck Eddie was doing with the shuffling sounds and the chain on his belt clacking. Eddie watches Steve's eyes go wide, mouth dropping open to a small 'o'. "See, the thing is, Steve," Eddie says, pulling himself up to be just on his knees to shuffle the last few inches closer. Steve leans back to keep his eyes on Eddie's face, which opens his lap up. "You said you know, but I don't think you do." Eddie brings his hands to rest on Steve's shoulders and Steve lets him. "You don't have to beg." He uses his hold on Steve's shoulders to balance himself as he swings a leg wide, to straddle Steve, then shifts his weight to repeat the process with his other leg before settling himself into Steve's lap. Steve's hands land on his hips and Eddie isn't sure if it's intentional or a reaction to Eddie plopping himself in his laps but he's going to believe it's the first one. "You've never had to beg with me."
Steve sucks in a sharp breath and then he collapses into Eddie. Steve's hands on his hips slide up and pull him into a hug, as close to Steve's body as he can get, while Steve shoves his head under Eddie's chin, into the junction of his neck and shoulder and breaths him in like it's the last breath Steve will ever take. "We're so stupid."
"Yeah," Eddie agrees, as he lifts one hand to hold the back of Steve's head while the other drops to rub soothingly at his back. "Yeah, we are."
They sit in the dirt, the closest they've been since that summer between '81 and '82. They should probably talk about. They're going to have to, if they want this to work. Full sentences with no hidden meanings, even though the thought of that kind of vulnerability makes Eddie skittish. It's going to be difficult, but it'll be worth it. Steve has always been worth it.
Eddie wants to say 'I love you', just to get it out, in the open, and not just implied, but there's a different first step to take. One that's actually a little easier. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
"Me too," Steve whispers, "I'm sorry. I should have-"
"Shut up," Eddie cuts him off, voice quiet and soft as he can be. "This is, and I cannot stress it enough, a we situation."
The huff of laughter on his skin from Steve feels like the start of something. A new beginning, a start over. A re-do.
A goddamn miracle.
Later, they'll drag themselves apart and up. Make it to the back of Eddie's van in the school parking lot to talk. Going to either's house feel too much, too soon. Their big fight happened at Eddie's home, and Steve's house isn't warm enough for the kind of comfort they want to share.
They'll have a talk. Filled with long pauses, stumbling over words and fears and insecurities because this is the hard part of a relationship. Getting it all out in the open so they can learn if they'll even work. The fear that they aren't going to be compatible anymore looms but doesn't deter. They both want a second chance, to give it a real shot, by the end of that first talk. But taking it slow.
They'll discuss what went wrong the first time (diving in without talking about anything certainly played a big part) and how to avoid that.
But that's later. Right now, Eddie just holds Steve, and Steve holds him back, and it certainly feels like the beginning of something good.

(Part Two aka the final part to this)
As soon as Steve parks outside of Eddie's trailer, he races to Eddie's car door and opens it for him.
Eddie shoots him a bewildered look as he makes his way out of his car. "I can open my door, you know."
"But a proper date opens the door for you."
Eddie snorts. "So this is already starting?"
Steve shrugs as he follows Eddie to his front door. "I need all the time I can get to prove you wrong. Plus, I need to see this charm you insisted you have."
Eddie opens the door and dramatically guides Steve inside, quickly closing the door behind them. He stuffs his hands in his pants and avoids eye contact with Steve, staring off as if contemplating something. Eddie shakes his head and looks back at Steve. "Welcome to my home," he says holding his arms wide.
Steve glances around and nods. "It's cozy. I like it."
"No need to lie to me, Harrington."
"I'm not," Steve insists and laughs humorlessly. "I mean, you should see my house. It's huge but extremely uncomfortable. My parents hired a decorator and insisted that we couldn't make a single change. It's just so..."
"Nice to look at but not nice to live in?" Eddie asks, finishing his sentence again.
Steve nods quickly. "Exactly that."
Eddie gives him a small smile and leans back against his kitchen counter. That same distracted look crosses over his face.
Steve can't help but walk closer to him and say, "Eddie?"
Eddie snaps out of it and asks, "Why are you here, Harrington?"
"To prove you wrong and help Dustin," Steve answers easily, leaving out the part about how he needs to know where this will go.
Eddie hums in response and pauses before asking, "So, you're not going to use this against me."
Steve sighs. "Maybe I would've in high school, but no. I won't tell anyone how much I'm going to 'woo' you." Steve throws up air quotes around the word woo which makes Eddie smile a bit.
"Then can I tell you a secret?"
Steve nods.
Eddie pushes off the counter and steps toward him. "I've never been on a date before."
Steve stares at him for a second. "And Dustin still asked you for help?"
Eddie scoffs and walks past him. "No need to rub it in."
Steve runs a hand through his hair and follows after him. "Sorry, that was stupid to say." He grabs Eddie's hand gently and waits for him to turn to him. "I'm sorry," he says sincerely, "Not cool."
Eddie just gives him an unimpressed look.
"It's just hard to share Dustin. I'm used to him only going to me for help. I don't know. It probably sounds dumb."
"It doesn't," Eddie says, squeezing his hand.
Steve glances down at their hands, having forgotten that he had even grabbed Eddie's in the first place. He runs his thumb over the back of Eddie's and says, "Let's do this trial run."
Eddie pulls his hand away and runs it over his face. "Steve, I don't know how to go on a date."
"Which is exactly why we're doing this and whatever else you have planned for Dustin and Suzie after the movie date. Plus, I still have to prove you wrong." Eddie pulls his hair in front of his face nervously. Steve reasons, "Plus, this can be practice for any future dates."
"A date with Steve Harrington," Eddie says with a laugh.
Steve shrugs. "Why not?"
Eddie eyes him and breathes out, "Okay."
"Okay?"
"We can do this trial run, but just because I'm new to this doesn't mean you'll have an easier time winning me over."
Steve smiles and saunters up to him. "Are you sure about that?"
Eddie's eyes flicker down to his lips and back to his eyes, immediately making Steve's heartbeat stutter. He doesn't expect Eddie to card a hand through his hair smoothly, tilting his head back and making Steve's knees buckle a little. Eddie smirks. "Careful, you're not the only one who needs to prove themselves."
He backs away quickly and moves to his kitchen, rummaging around before coming up with a bag of popcorn which he pops in the microwave. Steve clears his throat, trying to gather himself before asking, "How have you never been on a date before?"
Eddie raises an eyebrow at him.
"I mean, you have all the... charm stuff down."
Eddie smiles. "So, you're already admitting to my charm."
Steve just puts his hands on his hips unimpressed.
Eddie's smile falters before he answers, "Okay, I mean I've hooked up with people at the Hideout, but no one's stuck around to actually go on a date with me."
Steve nods but replies, "That's hard to believe."
Eddie shakes his head. "Let's just say that it's easier for you than it is for me."
It feels like Steve's had this conversation before with... Robin? But why would it feel so familiar? He glances back at Eddie who has a bit of fear in his eyes.
The microwave beeps and suddenly it hits Steve.
He watches as Eddie grabs the bag, cursing slightly when the steam hits him. For some reason the revelation makes Steve feel a bit more nervous as the chance of something happening increases dramatically.
"Hey," Steve says, "It's okay if you're... you know."
Eddie's head snaps up.
Steve holds his hands up. "I promise I won't tell a soul."
Eddie relaxes a bit, but he stays behind the counter as he asks, "And you still want to do this trial run knowing that...?"
"Yeah," Steve says a little bit too enthusiastically, "Now I can be sure that your judgment of my skills is accurate."
This makes Eddie laugh loudly, and Steve immediately smiles. "You know, I think I'm finally starting to see why Dustin likes you so much."
"And why the ladies love me so much?"
"Don't push it, Harrington," Eddie says, pointing a finger at him before grabbing a bowl to put the popcorn in. He grabs the bowl and gestures for Steve to follow him to the couch. "So, you're the expert here, what do you recommend?"
"Like movie options?" Steve asks as he makes himself comfortable.
"Movie options, seating arrangements, where to put the popcorn..." Eddie trails off.
Steve tucks his feet under himself and shrugs. "Depends. If we were Dustin and Suzie I would say to watch something cheesy or something science fiction that they both enjoy. Dustin should definitely watch to see if her hand is free to hold at any point, but that's about it for them."
"And how would it change for us- or me?"
Steve smiles and scoots in closer, throwing an arm over the back of the couch. "If it's here then definitely get as comfortable and close as you want. As for a movie, it depends. Do you actually want to watch the movie or do you want background noise?"
Eddie rolls his eyes. "Classy."
Steve laughs. "No, no, I don't mean like hooking up. I mean if you just want to talk and get to know each other maybe make out a little, you want to pick a movie that you've both seen and won't be upset missing." He glances toward a stack of tapes near them and points at one. "Like Back to the Future, great movie to comment on and talk during, but I wouldn't be upset about missing parts. But I'm guessing you're like Dustin and Star Wars would be a no-go for missing scenes. At least, I was that way when watching."
"You've seen Star Wars? Which one?"
"The one with the little teddy bears."
Eddie hums in response.
"So, what are you thinking for a movie?" Steve asks.
"Back to the Future would be nice, but maybe we do like thirty minutes so we can get to my part of the date without you falling asleep on me," Eddie suggests.
"You already have an idea?"
Eddie shrugs and looks away. "It's kind of always been a date idea in the back of my mind."
"Secret romantic," Steve teases, hand dropping down from the couch to Eddie's shoulder, squeezing lightly.
Eddie tenses up a little, so Steve asks, "Is this okay?"
"Yeah, I'm just not used to it," Eddie answers honestly.
Steve nods and pulls away, moving to put the tape in the VHS player before coming back to the couch. He sits a little further away from Eddie and says, "We can keep our distance if that's more comfortable with you."
Eddie just nods and looks ahead at the screen, tilting the bowl of popcorn toward Steve who takes a handful. He tries to find something to say, but he's struck by sudden nervousness and wonders if Eddie's right about him cruising based on his looks because usually by this point whatever girl he's with is giggling and practically climbing into his lap to get closer to him.
But then Eddie relaxes a bit and throws his arm around the back of the couch which fills Steve with relief. "So, how did you get so close to Dustin? He goes on and on about you, but he never has told me that story."
Steve shrugs, trying not to give away how much the question freaks him out. He tries to keep the answer as close to the truth as he can. "He's friends with Nancy's younger brother so he's kind of always been around I guess. One day, I was bringing flowers to Nancy to apologize for doing something stupid, but Dustin found me instead. He told me that Nancy wasn't home and that he needed a ride and help with something, and the rest is history."
Eddie narrows his eyes at him. "I feel like there's more to the story."
Steve shrugs again and shoves a handful of popcorn in his mouth.
"Like the whole bat with nails that Dustin didn't even look twice at. The story between you two doesn't make sense."
Steve swallows his mouthful and moves closer to Eddie. "What if I told you that it's a story I'll have to come back to another time?"
Eddie twists toward him and tilts his head. "Do you really think that's going to make me less curious? And I see what you're doing trying to distract me with your charm."
Steve tucks a strand of hair behind Eddie's ear and asks, "Well, is it working?"
Eddie just shakes his head and says, "You wish, pretty boy." Nonetheless, he turns back to the movie leaving Steve to privately panic over the way the nickname makes him feel.
And maybe he wants to torture himself or something because next thing he knows, he's asking, "Well, how would you have distracted me?"
Eddie's head slowly turns to him, eyebrows raised. "Do you really want to know?"
Steve blames morbid curiosity as the reason he nods in response.
Eddie sets the bowl of popcorn down - and the implications of that scare Steve shitless - and he moves until their knees are touching. He gets a thoughtful look on his face as he recalls their conversation. "So, I was saying something about how the story between you didn't make sense. And instead of agreeing with it, I would've said something like. You know what doesn't make sense? How someone so gorgeous ended up here with me."
Steve flushes red but simultaneously snorts in response, "That's a horrible line."
"Yet, you're the one who is blushing."
Steve raises his eyebrows and says, "Well, if I got a do-over and time to think like you, then maybe I would've done something like this." Steve leans in and puts a hand on his chest, slouching down so he has to look up through his lashes to say, "Maybe that's a story for another time because right now... I have other ideas about what we could be doing."
Eddie stares down at him, hand slipping off the couch to trail up his back and into his hair. "And here I thought that you had said more intimate didn't mean sex."
Steve smiles and hopes Eddie can't feel his heart pounding in his chest. "It's true, but I also told you that some movies are great background noise to make out during."
Eddie's eyes flicker down to his lips, and Steve can feel his eyes start to flutter shut.
But then, Eddie abruptly pulls back and says, "Okay, yeah, you got me. I understand the Harrington charm."
Steve only smiles slightly, feeling the disappointment settle in his chest at losing the chance to kiss the boy.
"So, I think date part one is covered. Onto my part?" Eddie asks, already standing up and rushing to stop the film.
"Yeah, sure," Steve says.
Eddie glances at him and pauses before beckoning him to follow him. Steve gets up immediately and follows Eddie to where he assumes his room is and suddenly gets a wave of panic.
Eddie glances back and must catch the look. "Relax, I'm just grabbing you some warmer clothes."
Steve nods but stays in the doorway, glancing around at Eddie's room. Something about it feels so Eddie that he can't help but smile at it.
"Here," Eddie says, thrusting a yellow sweater into his hands, "I haven't worn it in forever but it should keep you warm."
"Thanks," Steve says, stripping off his jacket to throw on the sweater before putting the jacket back on. "But why do I need more clothes?"
Eddie smiles. "You'll see." He grabs the blanket off his bed and walks past Steve to the front door. He opens it and says, "After you."
Steve gives him a look of confusion before heading out the front door. Eddie follows behind him and closes the door before grabbing Steve's hand and leading him around the trailer to a ladder which he immediately starts climbing.
Steve tries to advert his eyes from the view Eddie's giving him before he follows him up the ladder, grabbing Eddie's hand once he makes it to the top in an attempt to steady himself. He's never been the biggest fan of heights, but he doesn't want to admit that to Eddie who guides him to the middle of the roof. He lets go of his hand to lay out a blanket and immediately lays down on it, patting the empty spot next to him.
Steve lays down and lets out a deep breath as he sees their view of the night sky, glittering with stars.
"Pretty amazing, right?"
All Steve can do is nod. He doesn't know if he's ever really taken the time to stare at the sky and appreciate its beauty.
"I like to go up here to clear my mind sometimes. But I've always thought it would be nice to share with someone else. But maybe Dustin and Suzie can just lay out in his yard instead because I think it would be life or death before I let one of them up here. Dustin would break a leg or something."
Steve chuckles and glances at Eddie only to find him staring at him as if trying to gauge his reaction. "Thank you for taking me up here," he says sincerely, going as far as reaching into the space between them and intertwining their fingers.
Eddie's hand squeezes his as he turns to look up at the stars, looking so at peace with the world that Steve can't help but stare at him.
Eddie glances at him. "Look at the stars, Steve. You're wasting your time staring at me."
"The stars are here every night though, so maybe I want to spend all the time I can looking at you."
Eddie turns to him with a conflicted look on his face. "Is this your Harrington charm?"
Steve shakes his head. "It's just the truth." He sighs and looks up at the sky. "Do you ever wish you could start over knowing everything you know now?"
"Yes," Eddie answers immediately, thumb running over the back of Steve's hand. "What would you change?"
Steve considers the question for a moment before turning to Eddie and saying, "Everything."
Eddie looks back at him and asks, "Would you change this?"
Steve's eyes search Eddie's, wondering how he wants him to answer the question, but he answers honestly, "I wouldn't have been such a dick earlier, and I would've changed this from a trial date to a real date."
Eddie whispers, "There's nothing stopping it from changing now."
Steve shifts onto his side and looks down at him. "Are you sure you want a date with King Steve of all people?"
Eddie shakes his head. "I don't think that's you. So why don't you prove me wrong?" he asks, running a hand through Steve's hair before resting it on the back of his head.
Steve lets Eddie take the lead to slowly drag him in, pausing when they're close enough to be breathing each other's air. "Are you sure you want this?" Eddie asks.
"More than you could possibly know," Steve replies before closing the gap between them and gently brushing their lips together before breaking the kiss to look Eddie in the eyes and make sure he's okay.
Eddie just pulls him back in and kisses him as if he's pouring everything he's feeling into the kiss which Steve returns just as passionately, unable to deny the truth that no kiss has ever made him feel this way before.
He cradles Eddie's face as they deepen the kiss and Eddie tries to pull him in impossibly closer, both hands making a mess of his hair until Steve pulls away, breathing hard before moving in to kiss him again as sweetly as he can before he rests their foreheads together.
They both try to catch their breath, and neither dares break the silence between them.
Eventually, Steve gives Eddie a gentle kiss on the forehead and rolls away onto his back, finding Eddie's hand and intertwining their fingers again.
They both stare up at the stars, not looking at each other until Eddie finally breaks the silence to ask, "Steve, where do we go from here?"
Steve turns to him and squeezes his hand. "I don't know," he confesses. "But what if we didn't think about it now? What if we just see what happens?" Steve asks, not wanting to think of the reality of their situation.
Eddie nods. "I like that idea."
So, they both turn back to the stars, wishing that their paths will be able to cross again.
Little do they know that their wishes will be granted soon.

“Your delinquent child is outside, and I have assured him that he is very, very grounded.”
Between Yeza and the campers still waiting for their parents to arrive from around the coast to collect them, Veth wasn’t sure any of them saw her move between the dining room and the foyer before she’d thrown the front door open.
Outside, Caleb held Luc by the back of the vest, neither of them looking any worse for wear. Behind them, Jester and Fjord looked a bit sheepish, though not nearly as sheepish as her son, who had almost curled into himself beneath the venomous look she’d given him.
“I thought you were dead! You're never leaving this house again! I couldn't get in contact with anyone and I thought you were fucking dead!” she screeched, before any of them could move, but Luc almost kept pace with her, slipping from his godfather’s grasp and, to her surprise, likely to the others’ surprise as well, threw his arms around her.
“I’m sorry, Mom, I should’ve listened to you, I’ll stay grounded for as long as you want—“
Veth spluttered for a moment, though her arms wrapped around him in return. This had not been how he’d returned under Kingsley’s grasp, caught by the ear and cursing up a storm.
It took a long moment to realize that Luc was trembling beneath her grasp. Very faintly, but definitely trembling.
She looked over his shoulder at Caleb, then Fjord and Jester. “There have been… several lessons learned in the past thirty-six hours,” Caleb said, his tone even stonier than his expression.
Fjord nodded slightly in agreement, carrying the weight of agreement. Her grasp on her son tightened, and she kissed his hair. Her sharp tone felt empty and hollow even to her own ears.
“Don’t you ever run away again— Don’t you know what I’d do if you were killed—“
“I know, Mom,” Luc interrupted, and for the first time in weeks— months— a long fucking time— he didn’t sound petulant.
He sounded like her boy.
“I kept him safe,” Caleb said flatly, also without any defensiveness. There was, even for Caleb, a dark flame behind his eyes. It felt like a spark she hadn’t seen in quite a few years.
“He was very particular about it,” Jester agreed, and then, in a poorly-disguised whisper, “Trent.”
Veth’s grip tightened, and she pulled Luc aside, away from the doorway. “Come in, tell me all about it—“ she pulled back and checked him over as Caleb nodded and passed inside. “You’re all in one piece, you’re alright—?”
“Yeah, Mom,” he agreed, with exhaustion. “Uncle Deuce made sure we were all in one piece.”
Jester pouted as she passed. “I also made sure you were okay, alright, but Caduceus is so helpful, you know, and honestly, in the end, it wasn’t even that bad— we saved most of the town, and we had a great party, and—“
She stopped her rambling in the middle of the doorway and clapped both hands to her mouth as Luc ducked under both of them into the house.
“Oh. My. Gods, Veth, you will not believe— Fjord proposed to me—“
With the number of things Jester had just imparted to her, it was honestly a testament to her own intelligence that Veth managed to process them in time to turn to Fjord just as he started up the steps, stopping him in his tracks.
“You what? And I missed it—?!”
"You know, Jester, I think we can let Caleb debrief the Brenatto family alone—"
She had him by the ear before he could move, which was an impressive feat considering he was over half her height, but he was almost as slippery of a bastard as she was.
Within an instant, he'd turned to mist in her grasp and vanished to the other side of the street, Jester complaining behind her all the while. Veth shrieked after him. "You piece of shit!"
In response, he yelled, "That's soon-to-be Admiral Tusktooth-Lavorre to you!"
