Not a Review: Manner of Death - Manga Version

I got the manga versions of Manner of Death that were released in 2023, and y'all . . .

This is wild bananas! Bun has an older brother and ex-boyfriend in Bangkok even though he is in the closet and dating women as a cover. Tan is younger, has a sick mother, and he thought Jane died by suicide because she was sad he was gay. Bodies are dropping dead left and right until the very end. Sorn and That aren't even side crumbs because they are just a crumb, as in one single crumb and nothing else. Oh, and the inspector is married, to a woman.

Pretty sure it follows the novel closely, so congratulations to Screenwriter Title, who was also behind He's Coming to Me, Dark Blue Kiss, Love Stage, and Low Frequency, for condensing the novel and making the series into a BL because looking at (a version of) the source material, Title really balanced this bad boy out for the show.

Combined, the two volumes are over 500 pages, which, once again, even though they aren't the original novel, probably are close to it, and there is constantly something happening on every single page. If this is how the novel was, trimming it down to a fourteen-episode series took skill. I loved Manner of Death, but people had issue with some of the plot holes in the series. However, compared to these versions of the original novel, the show is very focused and balanced.

These two volumes are enjoyable. I'm glad I have them to add to my small manga collection of BL favorites with Old Fashion Cupcake and Our Dining Table, but this journey is a lot. Seriously, Bun walks out to the balcony after having sex with Tan on the very last page since they got engaged in New York after reconciling two pages before, and a body falls from the sky. The End.

I know Tan proposed to Bun by pretending they were being taken hostage with guns pointed at their heads in the series, but . . . it wasn't a dead body jumping out of nowhere, you know?

Now I see how Dead Friend Forever aligns with Sammon's style, which is a non-ending ending where something ends, then starts again. That also happened in Make a Wish. And I ain't mad at it! It's just a lot, all at once, constantly. But it helps me appreciation the show more. I got two gay men who never felt bad about being gay and scoffed with the inspector even suggested they were straight. I got murder-mystery and romance. And I got a settled ending with Tan and Bun married.

Oh, and I got that kiss in the very beginning.

So this isn't a review. It's an appreciation post.

Because Manner of Death, the series, is solid.

So we know that Gintoki have a lot of problems expressing his emotions so how do you think he would confess ?

I think it's really important to note when he comes to terms with his feelings. Because this is his viewpoint on love (and smoking lol).

I laugh because he's not wrong literally everywhere he goes someone is smoking (tsukuyo, otose, catherine, hijikata, takasugi, kozenigata (hard boiled), even the recycle shop lady).

I would also like to note the build up it takes before the actual confession due to it being difficult for gintoki.

but anyway back to the subject at hand. you know the stereotypical romance movie protagonist who's completely given up on love? but one day a love interest appears and as they grow closer their view on love slowly changes?

yeah that's gintoki when it comes to romance.

something about the relationship gintoki has with said love interest has to feel different. he has the worst opinion when it comes to love.

this goes in line with his ideal type. even when he does start to develop feelings, he won't act on them. at least not on the spot, due to his insecurities of wondering if he really deserves to have a romantic relationship with someone.

especially given the type of person he's attracted to is the complete opposite of him. but also because he's never had an interest in committed relationships. the man is almost thirty and has still never had a girlfriend in his life.

so what causes him to finally decide to act on his feelings? well from the time shachi mentioned how he thinks he's in love with a doctor at the prison & gintoki punched him.

gintoki giving advice makes me giggle because he always says things he himself should be taking advice for.

he's also the type to encourage himself by saying things to like 'c'mon you're not a grade schooler' or 'don't be a coward'. which eventually leads to a very awkward confession.

yes gintoki can make a good pick up line if he wants to. but he fumbles over his words when speaking to ketsuno ana. the situation is different when attraction is involved.

he tries to find a time when the two of them are alone. then attempts to start a casual conversation but he's obviously very tense. so much so his crush would ask if he's alright.

to which he jumps, scratches the back of his head, and tries to shake it off with a nervous smile and laugh. he eventually starts bringing up the confession. but the closer he gets to it, the harder it becomes for him to actually say it.

think back to when he tried to ask kagura if she had a boyfriend and couldn't get the word 'boyfriend' out of his mouth.

as he's finally reaching the end of his rambling to the point where he has to say 'I like you' he stutters and pauses. but instead of 'I like you', it's an alternative, 'I like your hair haha hehe.'

it's stupid but he can't bring himself to say those exact words. so he says something close (but at the same time not) to at least say he tried. But that's not to say his crush didn't notice something was wrong.

"that's not what you wanted to say was it."

being busted has him on edge all over again. he tries to dismiss the remark, but his crush isn't having it. gintoki needs a little (gentle) pushing in order for him to be honest about his emotions.

"please gin-san, you know I won't judge you."

"that's not the problem."

"then what is?"

"...I can't say."

"yes you can. If something's bothering you this much, I can't help but worry. I'm here to support you just like everyone else."

"and what if it drove you away?! what then?!"

"...why would I be driven away?! I know you're not perfect, but not once has that ever made me think less of you. I care about you and want you to be happy. It doesn't matter what it is, I'm here for you gin-san."

"even if I liked you?!"

both look at each other in shock. gintoki slipping up and confessing from having been caught up in his emotions. his crush shocked at the confession.

"...yes."

"what?"

"I like you too."

the two stand still for a solid minute. processing what the other has just said. until finally falling into each others arms onto the floor as gintoki squeezes his crush tight.

Game Development endeavours

(Character art by HV_Micha, background by me) So, a couple months ago, Micha wrote me: "Hey, there is a BL game jam going on, would be fun to join! We were joking before about doing something this summer with Kirian, but never went further. I answered: "Sure, call Kir, and let's start". Micha was "I was joking, unless..." That's how we found ourselves making a visual novel. The first idea that came up was "VAMPIRES" (because pirates and vampires are the pillars of queer creativity, lol). The problem? Among us three I kinda have some narrative skills, but not nearly enough. Enters glorious, amazing @masterofrecords . Gods bless them, since they worked well into the late night to give us a HUGE chunk of text that a visual novel needs. I am kinda sorry for pulling you into that. Micha is a god of art. Every character art was amazing from the first concept, and it was a delight to work with such a professional. (He also knows how to make the interface look good, unlike me). Kirian managed to get a grasp on Godot and do some magic with the dialogue system. Logic is the hardest part, so I am in awe. (Also, was pretty cool to work on code together with someone). Interface coding was uneventful, but backgrounds... Oh boy. My artstyle is too rough to fit well with Micha's, so I decided to pull Julia from Drawfee. AKA, remember how to use blender. I am very proud of library (I dreamt to make a gothic building in 3d for a long time, and I consider making a more complex vault shape an achievement) and of greenhouse (since it required a lot of figuring things out). We finished 2 hours before deadline. There are things we did not have time for. Nevertheless, it was a wonderful learning opportunity. Making a finished game in an amazing team, solving the problems... Loved it, but need a rest now. And a drink.

Mr. Reid: Once again I stand in this House in disbelief as I reflect on comments made by our federal leaders. Last week a federal Liberal MP said, quote: this country will be unable to meet its climate change targets by 2030 if certain provinces don’t do their part. She called the inaction of Ontario’s government irresponsible and, quote, a crime against humanity. Greenhouse gas emissions are a serious issue for Canada and the world, but it’s no crime against humanity if provinces aren’t able to help meet unachievable federal targets in eight short years.

Alberta has done an exceptional job when it comes to reducing emissions and continues to do so not only by reducing its carbon footprint but also by spending the time, the money, and the resources on renewable energy. To hear this Liberal MP knock on provincial efforts to reduce emissions and compare them to such horrible events is absurd. Earlier this year we saw their trust-fund leader Justin Trudeau call Canadians terrorists and bigots when they stood up for their rights under the Constitution. To see a member of his Parliament compare underwhelming climate change initiatives to the Holocaust is outrageous.

Alberta leads when it comes to environmental stewardship and conservation, but we’re always under pressure by this federal government to do even more. Just last week I read an article showcasing how this federal government is unfairly expecting Alberta to carry the weight of reaching those emission goals. In that article, Mr. Speaker, policy-makers at Ag Canada said that they are concerned about greenhouse gas emissions from wheat, barley, and other cereal crops, crops that alongside our oil sands are a pillar to both the Canadian and international economies. Ag producers work extremely hard to feed us in a carbon footprint limited manner.

Alberta should not be the province this federal government continues to focus on when it comes to environmental stewardship. Alberta has made leaps and bounds in trying to reduce emissions. The federal government and their NDP opposition supporters need to reconsider how they plan to reach climate change goals if they continue to put down provinces like Alberta.
