I just wrote a bay leaf scene where Frodo chops wood (he spent his entire life in a rural community only to properly learn to use an axe from Gimli) and digs holes in the yard to deal with his feelings, and Sam discovers him and is like "what in the actual hell, Mr. Frodo?... I'm not sure I even want to know what's going on here."
Loosely based on the fact that Count Tolstoy would, from time to time, do manual work in the fields and his serfs would be like "look, master's gone goofy again."
Also loosely based on Wilfred digging up the yard and claiming "anxiety" made him do it.

potential authors that may appear in bsd
Arthur Conan Doyle- wrote sherlock holmes, definitely getting into the DETECTIVE manga (maybe apart of the clocktower?, he was also famously gullible in contrast to his work, was friends with harry houdini and genuinely believed he was a wizard even though houdini repeatedly showed how his tricks worked, was also tricked by the first case of photo-editing by two little girls, prime joke material), THEORY TIME: he's going to have the actual 'super deduction' ability and will make ranpo face once and for that he's a normal person but ranpo will be able to out deduce him thus disproving that normal people can't defeat ability users
Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu- carmilla (the lesbian vampire story that predated bram stoker's dracula by 26 YEARS CARMILLA SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIRST, he could show up with a possible cure to the vampire curse in the current arc?, maybe he or carmilla was even the one to bite and turn stoker)
Lewis Carrol- wrote alice's adventures in wonderland
jrr tolkien- wrote the hobbit and lord of the rings
Hans Christian Andersen- wrote the little mermaid and the snow queen
The Grimm brothers- wrote most famous fairytales
Johnston McCulley- wrote zorro (may appear as part of a phantom theives guild in a more lighthearted arc after this one before jumping back into the main story?)
Marice Leblanc- wrote arsene lupine (had a crossover with edogawa ranpo's kogoro akechi lmao ty p5 knowledge AND sherlock holmes, a near guaranteed shoe-in, also part of that phantom theives guild with a potential past involving both doyle and ranpo)
Prosper Mérimée (?)- in the same vein of p5 references, the thief woman in prison may have actually been carmen from the opera carmen by prosper mérimée (soon to be thieves guild member?)
Robert Louis Stevenson- wrote the strange case of dr jerkyll and mr hyde and treasure island (thieves guild member, possible split personality a la jerkyll/hyde, blackbeard and william kid references incoming)
Alexandre Dumas- the three musketeers, the count of monte cristo (also thieves guild member)
Gaston Leroux- phantom of the opera (possible thieves guild member off work only)
toni morrison- we are in DESPARATE NEED of black writers, although maybe not since she only recently passed, wrote beloved and the bluest eye
zora neale hurston- their eyes were watching god
hughs langston- famous poet
richard wright- black boy, native son
Harriet Beecher Stowe- uncle tom's cabin
harper lee- to kill a mockingbird
robert frost- famous poet, wrote the road not taken
emiliy dickinson- famous poet
ernest hemmingway- famous poet (if his ability is for whom the bell tolls we're fucked)
jane austen- pride and prejudice (would probably get along with margaret and Nathaniel)
the brontë sisters- jane eyre, wuthering heights (would get along with jane, margaret, and Nathaniel)
george orwell- 1984 and animal farm
william golding- the lord of the flies
Joseph hellar- catch-22 (his power would be hell, a literal catch-22)
ralph ellison- the invisible man (ability is obvious, thieves guild member, maybe a conflict with tanizaki considering the similar abilities?)
oscar wilde- the picture of dorian gray (this man was a great big bisexual SLUT in life i want him to be the same in bsd)
virginia woolf- to the lighthouse (maybe will reference who's afraid of virginia woolf?)
c. s. lewis- the chronicles of narnia (personally knew jrr tolkien, famously at odds over Christmas, prime joke material)
charles dickens- a Christmas carol, oliver twist, a tale of two cities, and great expectations
arthur miller- the crucible (maybe his ability makes people distrust others?)
Johnathan swift- Gulliver's travels (teleporting ability definitely, new fast travel plot device although maybe not as it could conflict with Gogol's ability)
Vladimir Nabokov- lolita, pale fire (on second thought i don't want him in here i can only IMAGINE how that would turn out, if he shows up he and mori would either get along or HATE each other)
Leo Tolstoy- war and peace (we already know fyodor is surviving this we still don't know what crime and punishment does CAN YOU IMAGINE HIM AND FYODOR TOGETHER HELLWORLDHELLWORLDHELLWORLD) THEORY TIME AGAIN: his power is one that specifically targets only ability users and makes them slowly start acting in either anger or complete affability until everyone is at war or peace, he would be the perfect compliment to fyodor if crime and punishment kills people who believe they're guilty literally the perfect storm of abilities, the absolute worst case scenario powers we're looking at a dark soukoku here
franz kafka- metamorphosis (he's gonna turn into a bug, isn't he)
Harlan Ellison- i have no mouth and i must scream (the horror related ability to replace lovecraft without being horrifically broken)
authors that i desparately want to show up but probably won't bc they didn't write in the 1800-1900s range that asagiri likes, are still alive, or are not globally recognizable enough
homer- the illiad and oddessy (i hope he starts his ability by making an invocation to the muses)
sappho (LESBIANS RISE UP)
virgil- the aeniad
dante- the divine comedy (virgil is a character in divine comedy like how bsd includes authors of other works, prime joke material)
john milton- paradise lost
Gilgamesh or Enkidu- we don't know who wrote the epic of Gilgamesh so the characters themselves could appear
margret atwood- oryx and crake, cat's eye (potentially another animal shapeshifting power, atsushi's gonna have a little cat colony gang at this rate)
neil gaiman- american gods, the sandman ('american gods sounds like a broken ability)
ursula k. guin- earthsea series
stan lee- i know he wrote comics not long form literature but i think the father of american comics and the superhero genre deserves to be recognized in the superhero/mafia/detective noir manga; plus japanese manga was heavily influenced by american comics after wwii, we would literally not be reading bsd in the same state today without stan lee
stephen king- no explanation needed, PLEASE LET HIM MEET LOVECRAFT KING IS A GIANT FAN OF LOVECRAFT I THINK HE SHOULD GET TO MEET HIS IDOL
r. l. stein- goosebumps, if literally NONE of these authors make it in PLEASE AT LEAST LET RL STEIN GET IN AND LET HIM MEET LOVECRAFT PLEASE GOOSEBUMPS DESERVES SO MUCH LOVE AND PLEASE GOD LET HIS POWER BE THAT FUCKING PUPPET I WANT TO SLAPPY TO BE ABSOLUTELY USELESS AND JUST EXIST TO TORMENT STEIN
chuck tingle- pounded in the butt series guy, he should be the god of the bsd universe this is not a joke

20 questions for fic writers
1. How many works do you have on AO3? going on 50+.
2. What’s your total AO3 word count? I am really bad at math, so I am not gonna even try to answer that... upwards of 20,000+ so longer than any novel or novella.
3. What fandoms do you write for? my most written for fandoms are in order 1) my original work. 2) Vampire Chronicles (books by Anne Rice). 3) TURN: Washington's Spies (blame @musicboxmemories for that one), and 4) Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 (Dave Malloy)/War And Peace(Leo Tolstoy).
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Anti-hero (Multifandom - Original Work, TURN, Vampire Chronicles, and VTM)
Rainy Night & Sister Death (Vampire Chronicles)
July 12, 1804 (TURN)
They Build Coffins (Multifandom - original work, TURN, Vampire Chronicles, and VTM)
Best of Our Circumstances (A Song of Ice and Fire)
It is so random and it feels perfectly on-brand for me. But, I am really proud of Anti-hero and They Build Coffins!
5. Do you respond to comments? I do! But I can be slow at times.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?... They Build Coffins, Sacrilegious Marriage , Hey, Little Songbird and Once the sun sets no candle can replace it - pain is fun!
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? Best of our circumstances is pure AU fluff, and Anti-hero isn't all doom and gloom.
8. Do you get hate on fics? No, cause I don't permit it.
9. Do you write s.mut? Yeah, but I prefer with plot and themesTM.
10. Do you write crossovers? *stares at Anti-hero* I have a few, and if you count my own characters... a lot. Anti-hero/they build coffins was a stroke of genius, I don't take criticism. So thanks for that, @musicboxmemories, for RP and editing obviously I do.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? I've had poetry stolen without credit but thankfully no. Media doesn't exist in a bubble. Don't be rude/weird, lol.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Not to my knowledge, not opposed though.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? No, but I'd love to! I did turn RP plots into all-out fics though. I should probably give @honorhearted / @musicboxmemories co-writing credits for the first 3rd of Anti-hero, but unless she asks, I won't. I am not pushy.
14. What’s your all-time favorite ship? Loustat (Vampire Chronicles), or all my oc x canons. Loustat will always be famous for a reason. Dysfunctional bi4bi vampires!
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will? N/a, I am a completionist.
16. What are your writing strengths? My high school writing teacher said I was well-versed in all aspects of writing, but if I had to pick one, character creation/research for worldbuilding.
17. What are your writing weaknesses? Editing. But I manage, it helps I speak well and (usually) have good grammar.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic? I'd try for the sake of trying. I put French and Hindi in my fics cause those are my strongest (not English) languages.
19. First fandom you wrote for? Natasha, Pierre & The Great Comet of 1812 (Dave Malloy)/War And Peace (Leo Tolstoy).
20. Favorite fic you’ve written? Anti-hero, at least for now.
Borrowed from: @musicboxmemories (thanks Maddie <3)
Tagging: @malicious-compliance-esq, @covenofthearticulate, @selkiewife and @the-bar-sinister (if you want).

reviving a meme I previously got from @swinging-stars-from-satellites
1. How many works do you have on Ao3?
158 (one currently unrevealed).
2. What’s your total Ao3 word count?
103,185. I cracked 100k recently!
3. How many fandoms have you written for?
All the Doctors Who + Gallifrey + Iris Wildthyme + The Time Travellers + GoR etc.; Ancient Greek Religion & Lore; WtOVPIC; Blake’s 7; Dracula; Discworld; Windrose Chronicles & Sun-Cross series also by Barbara Hambly (one crossover); All Creatures Great and Small; Lost at Christmas, heaven help me. That makes nine as I count it. Most only for one small thing or crossover.
4. Top 5 fics by kudos?
Skipping kudos bot victims:
Ms Smith (13 and Sarah, fun with fake names)
don’t worry, he’s with me (Ten and Donna five-times-fic)
Vicarious (Six & Martha drabble)
Time Flies Like an Arrow (witches fly on a broomstick) (Discworld, Lancre Witches, having a philosophical conversation about time) (I have come to detest this title but I’m glad people enjoyed the fic)
to all our nights and days to come (Seven/Romana Time War AU)
It’s helpful to include extremely popular, well-known characters in your fics. Or, apparently, to write a slightly darker twist on your rarepair OTP and happen to plug it one day on a relevant popular post.
5. Do you respond to comments? Why/why not?
I do, because I love getting comments and I am always genuinely grateful to hear that someone has enjoyed my work!
6. A fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
Wow, last time I did this meme I said it was That Which We Call. That’s changed. It might actually be to all our nights and days to come, or else one of the Six-post-Trial ones.
7. Do you write crossovers?
Apparently! But not much, and not well.
8. Ever received hate on a fic?
Nope, touch wood.
9, Do you write smut?
Not my thing.
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I know of.
11. Ever had a fic translated?
Yes!! @sci-firenegade translated Making History into Portuguese! It is so cool.
12. Have you ever co-written a fic?
Sort of, with Moki! We more tend to write sequels to each other’s stuff, but we also have listed ourselves as co-authors on a couple of things.
13. All time fav ship?
Seven/Romana.
14. WIP you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
Never say die! Probably the Eight/Charley babyfic AU, though. If I go back to it it’ll be as a very different writer and I’ll probably want to rework what exists and it’ll be technically a different fic.
15. Writing strengths?
Character voices & dialogue. Also, focalization. I always know what A thinks of B and what B notices about A, which is hilarious as I absolutely do not know any of this in real life.
16. Writing weaknesses?
Used to be length; I’m still very brief but I feel like I have more control over the length of a fic now. Like it comes out more or less the length I expect it to; I can tell what size something’s gonna be. Probably now I would just say plot. I’m not great at Things Occurring. And like everybody else I get hung up on how to describe basic actions like walking across a room.
17. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in a fic?
Don’t do it if you can’t get the other language right (as well as how code-switching actually tends to work). Also, translation convention exists for a reason. Probably don’t pull an ‘opening lines of War and Peace’ unless you are in fact Tolstoy, in which case you don’t need my writing advice. Nothing inherently wrong with it though.
18. First fandom you wrote for?
Officially, DW. Unofficially, probably something as a kid before I knew fandom existed. Redwall or something.
19. What’s your fav fic you’ve written so far?
to all our nights and days to come, probably.
Not tagging anyone, but memes are for stealing!

Sparks Fly
The conclusion of yesterday's story. Dean performs at open mic night while Castiel swoons behind the counter.
Suptober prompt: Crossover Flufftober prompt: "You kept this?" Fictober prompt: "You’re making my head hurt." Inktober prompt: Forget
(Read on AO3)
The door closes behind the handsome man's departing back. Castiel tries desperately to look uninterested, busying himself with the dials on the front of the espresso machine. But he can't hide it: he's flustered, and he feels flushed heat creeping up his cheeks and across the back of his neck.
At the counter, Inias leans over the sign up sheet, then straightens again to crow, “Your future husband has a name! Dean Winchester, or whatever!” His normal, laconic tone has sharpened into something sarcastic, something with bite.
“Inias, please,” Castiel mutters, but his fellow clerk is relentless.
“Castiel Winchester. Mr. and Mr. Dean Winchester. The Messrs Winchester-Novak,” he singsongs, his mouth twisted into a nasty smirk.
“You're making my head hurt.” It's a feeble protest, which Inias gleefully ignores.
“Yours will be a June wedding, I think..”
Castiel groans, “What do I need to do to get you to forget about my... interest in that man?”
“Cover my next five clopens, and I'll never mention your pathetic crush again.”
“Done.”
~~~~~
That Tuesday is a particularly slow day at the store, which gives poor Castiel plenty of time to overthink. Inias had referred to his “pathetic crush,” an unfortunately apt turn of phrase. The man, Dean, is a regular customer at Eagle Eye, and Castiel is absolutely, pitifully besotted with him, and has been for months.
At first it was simple physical attraction. He's gorgeous, with a strong jaw, sparkling green eyes, and full, kissable lips. But it's Dean's literary taste that's got his head so completely turned around. He's in the store at least once a week, buying a book or two at every visit. His preferences run in particular to Vonnegut, Brautigan, and the Beat poets, but he's also taken home some Tolstoy, some Faulkner, a bit of LeGuin and VanderMeer... A few times, he's asked Castiel for a recommendation. He's bought every title Castiel has suggested, on the spot, and come back later to rave about each one.
There's a particularly lovely smile that comes across his face when he's talking about a good book. It's intoxicating to see. Castiel has wasted far too many of his idle hours lost in fantasies of what else he could do to bring that beautiful smile to light.
And now, this evening, Dean will be performing, right here in front of him, in this store. Castiel wonders what talent the man will display. Music? Dance? Poetry? Whatever he does tonight, surely it will be perfection.
~~~~~
Dean's performance is... Not perfection.
He's the fourth act of the night, right after Marv's weekly recitation of his latest mediocre poems. He stumbles and almost trips as he steps up to the microphone, both hands wrapped awkwardly around his guitar.
“Hi, my name's Dean,” he says. He's too loud, too close to the mic. He winces, then tries again, keeping his voice softer. “Sorry, um, hi. So... Wow, there's a lot of cameras in here.” He looks down and fusses with his guitar strap for a moment, takes a couple of deep breaths. “Look, I mean, I don't... I don't do... this? So, if I horribly mess up, and get really nervous, it's uh... Because I don't do this.”
The crowd is stocked with Tuesday-night regulars who have seen their share of nervous newbies. They clap and whistle in encouragement. Dean blanches at the sound.
“Here's the problem,” he says, wrapping a visibly trembling hand around the microphone stand. “I don't play, in front of people..? So, pretend you're not here.”
The crowd chuckles. Dean gives them a weak smile, then he chides, “Alright, shh, you're not supposed to be here.”
Another deep breath. He looks down at the neck of the guitar and carefully positions his fingers for his opening chord.
“Okay, here goes...”
The song he's chosen was a big enough crossover hit in its day that even Castiel, unfamiliar as he is with a lot of modern music, kind of recognizes it. It's a song about wanting someone, a plea to the object of an unrequited desire. Dean plays it stripped down, and slow. This is probably out of necessity; it's clear that he's a just a beginner on the guitar. His hands fumble at every chord change, and he struggles to keep the beat steady as he sings.
His voice, though... It's warm and honey-rich, and he packs the lyrics with all the longing a heart can hold. When he calls, “Meet me in the pouring rain, kiss me on the sidewalk,” Castiel's toes curl in his sneakers with the strength of his longing to do exactly that.
As the song goes on, Dean relaxes a bit. He even manages to stop staring down at his hands and look  out at the audience a little. Across the crowded room, somehow, his gaze finds Castiel's and locks on, and there's that smile, the one he dreams about far too often.
Dean sings, “Get me with those blue eyes, baby, as the lights go down.” Castiel knows the lyrics well enough to recognize that Dean's made a change to the color, and to understand what that might mean. For the first time since the start of his “pathetic crush,” he feels a stirring of hope. He smiles back, and quietly sings along.
~~~~~
On their first anniversary, Cas shows Dean a video of the performance. At the sound of the first clunky chord, Dean's pawing at the screen, too embarrassed to look directly at it. Cas laughs and holds the phone out of his boyfriend's reach.
Dean groans and covers his eyes. “Ohhh my God, Cas! You kept this? Where did you even get it??”
“The store records all of the open mic nights. Sometimes we use clips on our social media, with permission. Sometimes the performers request copies for their own use.” He kisses Dean on the nose. “Sometimes they're treasured mementos of unforgettable nights.”
Dean leans in and kisses him back, full on the mouth. Then he pulls away and smiles. “That was an unforgettable night. The first of many. I'm hoping for many, many more. But please never make me watch that again. I can't believe how bad I used to be.”
“You were never bad, my love,” Cas corrects him. “You were just starting out. I enjoyed listening to you then, and I enjoy listening to you now that you're more skillful.”
“Yeah?” Dean asks, and his boyfriend nods. “Well, I think you're really gonna like the song I wrote for you last night. It's so much better than that t-swizzle cover.”
He grabs his guitar, and Cas settles back to listen.
So Dracula's I too can love and ending up wanting to turn Jonathan than to outright murder him like [insert random man here] could be a influenced by the Tolstoy story?Though they don't share the extreme dichotomy, as Dracula will go feed on [redacted] despite hating her
The Vourdalaks are too sincere and all-encompassing when it comes to love to be a Dracula inspiration, I think. Dracula is cherry-picking pretty young things like you’d pick out pets. The Vourdalaks act on loving relationships that existed pre-undeath, conscripting romantic partners and kin alike.
Weirdly, I think they’d be at extreme violent odds if they met in a crossover. 👀
@belphegor1982 tagged me and I don't want to work so I'm going to spend a whole half hour on this. this is a flawless plan
How many works do you have on AO3?
162. That's what doing two fictobers will do to you. The other 100ish fics i have no explanation for
What's your total AO3 word count?
521,423. Almost as long as War & Peace. Take that, Tolstoy.
What fandoms do you write for?
The whole list is awfully long because I like to drop one fic and then never come back again. But so far the fandom I've really been involved in writing fic for have been Fairy Tail, Batman, Kaamelott, Call of Duty, MCU and Supernatural.
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Ok let's go
O happy dagger! This is thy sheath (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023)) aka that bard REALLY wanted to handle that paladdin's sword if you know what I mean
The House of Denial (Call of Duty) When I got obsessed by two secondary characters and learned more about Mexico in 2 weeks than in 20 years of my life
My lover stands on golden sands (Call of Duty) i had seen many tiktoks about selkie aus and i wanted to write one so bad
Karpman Triangle (Call of Duty) somehow inspired by the three ghosts of christmas story. also gruelling coming to terms with trauma
I think love is something that happens to other people (Batman) man i just love a good time travel AU
Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
I try to respond to every comment I get, because I like engaging with readers. The best feeling in the world is when a reader replies back<3
What's the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Not considering that extremely unsubtle Fairy Tail fic on my FFnet I wrote at 13 with the idea that I was mature enough to talk about suicide (I wasn't), I think my angstiest fics were the two fics I had written for a friend building on one of his fics, where I was trying to out-angst him.
What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I've written some fluffy pieces but finding the happiest ending one is complicated. I'm gonna say The Dead are All Living even though its not exactly a fluff ending. It's very cathartic tho so that counts
Do you get hate on fics?
No. Except for that one person in my Ffnet days who accused me of plagiarism because my fic had been destroyed by the automatic translator on my phone that had made the text look like a very bad translation. They got very heated about it... its funny in retrospective but 14yo me was not amusedTM
Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
I try. I really like writing hate sex, it makes for really interesting scenes with juicy conficted feelings. The rest of the time I try to mix it up.
Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?
No. I should try to though, that would be funny
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not to my knowledge
Have you ever had a fic translated?
I have! I've translated a few of my fics into English, and I've got some fics translated into Russian and Ukrainian. Someone asked me a few months ago to translate another fic into Mandarin but I've not heard of them since
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes! Le Bon, la Brute et le Friand, a western au with @kaantt for the Kaamelott series. I'm ashamed to say i've stopped working on it, but I've just not been into the fandom lately
What's your all-time favorite ship?
I don't have one because I tend to jump from fandom to fandom. At the moment I'm really into Soap/Ghost from Call of Duty and Zoro/Sanji from One Piece, but I stay loyal to my dear Arthur/Venec from Kaamelott and the fuckton of other ships I've been into before
What's the WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
My Kaamelott fic Atropos. I love the fic but i'm not in the fandom that much anymore, so unless I get back into it it's going to stay asleep for a while.
What are your writing strengths?
I can write good metaphors. Also I'm pretty good at research and that helps me at not going for the most obvious thing every time, which I think makes some of the things I write stand out a little more.
What are your writing weaknesses?
Man I cannot write a pwp for the life of me. I always start with relatively kinky ideas and then i feel like I inevitably water it down or the plot takes too much space. One day I promise i'll drop a 33k nasty dubcon orgy fic but that day is far away
Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?
I love sneaking in some French into my English fics, but that's because it's my first langage. I wouldn't do it in langages I'm not fluent on, because i've seen some truly awful French in other fics and that took me out of some good stories. I don't want to do that to others, so when i use words from other langages I limit it to a few words i can be pretty sure of.
First fandom you wrote for?
Fairy Tail. That manga was my introduction to online fandom and it'll always have a special place in my heart (both the manga and the fandom)
Favorite fic you've ever written?
Oh no don't make me choose between my babies uh. I have a few I'm extremely proud of and these are
Figures troubles (Kaamelott) Mehgan's pov on a lot of the events of the series and movie
The House of Denial (Call of Duty) so much personal extrapolation poured into this one
Counting Heads (Call of Duty) John Price being an awfully complicated man
κυνώπιδος (Greek Mythology) my take on Helen of Sparta
Hypothèses d'Hyménée (Kaamelott) me playing around with OCs and different scenarios around Arthur's other potential wives
tagging @kaantt @suzhhou @garnetrena to do this
One day I was reading “Anna Karenina” and my friend sent me a meme with Robin from HIMYM. Suddenly I realized that Kitty’s surname (Shcherbatsky in English and Щербацкая in Russian) is pretty similar (almost identical) to Robin’s surname (Scherbatsky in English and Щербацки in Russian). So, I thought, maybe they can be relatives, Kitty can be Robin’s great-great-great-grandmother? Well, I now introduce you the crossover that you didn’t know you needed.
In Anna Karenina we have the family of Shcherbatsky, they are Princes (or Knyazya, which is a way better translation). Sadly, the only son of this family has drowned and now they have only two daughters – Kitty and Dolly. Both took their husbands’ surnames after marriage, so it’s impossible for this branch of the family to pass their surname to future generations. But the father of these girls – Prince Shcherbatsky – probably has a brother (we are not sure about their family ties because Tolstoy doesn’t like describing minor characters especially when they are mentioned only once or twice). This brother has two sons – the first one is called Nikolay, the name of the second one we don’t know (because why do we need this information), and they are Kitty and Dolly’s cousins. In the beginning of the novel (1870s) they are pretty young, approximately 15-20 years (but we don’t know it for sure because once again, why do we need this information). We can take any of them because it doesn’t matter for us who will be the ancestor of Robin.
If in 1872 (let’s take this year as the beginning) he is 20, in the end of the novel (in 1904) he is around 52. Probably he already has children and among them there is one or maybe more boys that can keep and pass the surname to future generations.
In 1917 after the February Revolution the family of Princes Shcherbatsky emigrate to Canada. Or maybe not directly to Canada, maybe at first, they go to some other countries but in the end, they found themselves in Canada (particularly in British Columbia because they could have some friends or relatives there).
While setting up house in anglophone society, they change the spelling of their surname to Scherbatsky so as it is easy for Canadian people to pronounce it. Around 1945-1955 a boy is born in this family, and he is given the name according to Canadian (or anglophone) traditions – Robin Charles. 20-25 years later he gets married to Genevieve Scherbatsky (her surname before marriage is unknown but her name is more French than English…. But it’s not our topic). In 1980 she gives birth to a girl. Robin has always wanted to have a boy and that’s why this girl is given his name – now we have Robin Charles Scherbatsky Jr.
At some point during her teenage years Robin decides to read the novel by the famous Russian writer Lev Tolstoy because many people told her that there is something similar between her surname and the surname of one of the families from the novel. Robin’s father runs into his daughter reading this book and thinks that it’s time to tell her about their ancestors because the novel is based on a true story and the Shcherbatsky from “Anna Karenina” are their relatives.
I don’t see any plot clashes, everything was the way I described it, try to change my mind
(Art by VintageNinjaFish) Does anyone remember back in the day in the My Little Pony fandom when there was a moderately sized sub-fandom based around a Fallout crossover fanfiction called Fallout: Equestria? I won’t go into the entire plot here (the dang thing was longer than Tolstoy’s War and Peace) but I will never forget that a huge part of the lore of the setting was figuring out how a non-unicorn pony could operate a weapon. The answer, it turned out, was this thing called a “battle-saddle” that could be easily mounted onto any ol’ pony. The thing essentially was a mount with two large weapons (that could range from laser-rifles to shotguns to missile launchers) that were connected to a bit that acted as a trigger mechanism once the wearer applied pressure by biting down on it. One of my favorite designs is this one done by VintageNinjaFish, who you should totally check out!
delighted to have been tagged by @laissezferre to answer some fic writer questions!
1) how many works do you have on AO3? 39
2) what’s your total AO3 word count? 230,440
3) how many fandoms have you written for and what are they? over the years I've probably dabbled in 50-75, but according to ao3 I've published in 22 (not counting "- All Media Type" umbrellas).
4) what are your top 5 fics by kudos? The Devils Before Us (fitzier) Scenes From a Not-So-Clandestine Romance (barduil) One Hundred Twenty-Six Dollars (barduil) These Small Hours (fitzier) magneticisque corporibus (fitzier)
5) do you respond to comments, why or why not? I try to--I don't think authors are obligated, but I see it as a way of saying thanks for the feedback I get.
6) what’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? CHRIST. I guess my chernobyl one-shot is an unambiguous downer, but though many of my fics contain angst, usually the goal is to arrive at a cathartic and/or satisfying resolution.
7) what’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending? you know what. what IS a "happy ending" anyway. who's to say that what one person thinks of as "happy" isn't another person's "ambiguous"? AND ANOTHER THING--
8) do you write crossovers? if so what is the craziest one you’ve written? I do not. truly a strange gap in my oeuvre, given my formative ffnet days
9) have you ever received hate on a fic? speaking of ffnet--someone once uploaded a non-fic rant to the fandom about what its author perceived as an unacceptable spate of ooc-ness in recent fics. several were lambasted in detail, and though none were named outright, one of mine was immediately identifiable. I was 14 and had been writing for probably 6 months at time time so, yes, it was an ooc fic. but who does that???? what a petty and sad life that user must have led. high-quality, lovingly characterized fanfic does not pop up fully-formed like a greek creation myth. awful cringe fic is a crucial and even ongoing part of a writer's journey.
anyway, a fandom bnf immediately called this person out, and then also privately messaged me in support; so all's well that ended well.
10) do you write smut? if so what kind? a) yes, b) the mediocre kind
11) have you ever had a fic stolen? not to my knowledge
12) have you ever had a fic translated? yes! a few of my terror fics have been translated into russian and spanish. the work that goes into translation is insane, so it's honestly such a compliment knowing there are people motivated to put that kind of effort into poring over my words (and also a little bit intimidating).
13) have you ever co-written a fic before? yes; although it was never finished. I've also collaborated very closely on and written independently within several shared AUs.
14) what’s your all time favorite ship? this is an IMPOSSIBLE question which I REFUSE to answer
15) what’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will? having recently resurrected and completed a five-year-old heretofore-abandoned wip, I'm less likely these days to say "never," but I do think my old galennic longfic Sum Total is probably something I won't ever bring to fruition to the degree I'd originally envisioned.
16) what are your writing strengths? dialogue, outlining, subtlety (I would like to think)
17) what are your writing weaknesses? transitions, internal narrative, Actually Finishing the Damn Thing
18) what are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? if I'm tolstoy and my audience is native russian and fluent in french, as was common contemporaneously, then yeah maybe I'll fuck around and open my magnum opus with several paragraphs of unfootnoted french dialogue.
but since I'm not, I would probably do something different. it would depend on the context, the reader, the narrator's degree of subjectivity/omniscience--etc, etc.
19) what was the first fandom you wrote for? sherlock holmes!
20) what’s your favorite fic you’ve written? it'll be a long time before anything I write affects my life as deeply as The Devils Before Us, but as far as fic I'm happiest to have brought into the world? fic that brings me the most joy to know Exists? has to be my west wing rarepair manifesto, last full measure :')
tagging uhhh OH DEAR I have a lot of writer mutuals, don't wish to exclude anyone, just off the top of my head: @wouldyoulikeacupofteadear @tinykings @hensons
AO3 Stats Meme
Thank you, @alleyskywalker!
1. how many works do you have on ao3?
23
2. what’s your current ao3 word count? 12,553 3. how many fandoms have you written for and what are they? 14 + 2 orginal works. These fandoms are War and Peace by L. N. Tolstoy, The Last of Us II, Detroit: Become Human, Sherlock BBC,  Sex Education and others (I’m too lazy to name all of them lol).
4. what are your top 5 fics by kudos? I’m going by my Ficbook statistic here for the obvious reason.
1. Дефект  (Sherlock BBC: Sherlolly; a postS4 angsty-fluffy sketch)
2. Старая привычка  (The Last of Us II: Dina x Ellie; a postcanon angsty sketch)
3. Суженый-ряженый (War and Peace: Sonyakhov; a postcanon darkish soulmate AU).
4. Секрет (Gravity Falls: Mabel x Mermando; a darkish AU sketch)
5. Подождать (Madagascar: Gloria x Melman; a human!Au sketch) 5. do you respond to comments? why or why not? I almost always respond to comments but can accidentally miss some and answer them much later. Mainly it’s just thank yous and/or my replies (and also ramblings x)) on reader’s thoughts. I started respond to comments because I was very enthusiastic when I started receive my first ones, but now it’s more of a a matter of following the habit or politeness. But I really love long elaborate reviews even though the vast majority of them comes from the reviews exchanges.
6. what’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
I’d say Незаживающее (Sherlock BBC: Warstan; a post4x02 angsty sketch) and Сплетения и разрывы are the leaders here. Also Суженый-ряженый has quite grim, if not angsty per se, ending.
7. do you write crossovers? what’s the craziest one you’ve ever written?
No.
8. have you ever received hate on a fic? Thank God no. Although there were comments with some...dubious implications, let’s put it like that x).
9. do you write smut?
No, but I want to try. But it’s seems really hard for me not to end up using metaphorical language to the point of being ridiculous. And absence of neutral vocabulary for sex and genitals in Russian certainly doesn’t help too.
10. have you ever had a fic stolen? Also no. At least no cases I know about.
11. have you ever co-written a fic before? No. I kind of hate to be dependant on someone in writing process. But the original story co-written with my best friend brought me into the writing. And we even posted it on the kids forum.
12. what’s your all time favorite ship? I’m avoiding “all time favorite” phrasing because my feelings for many ships I used to call an OTP are faded away now but Sherlolly is probably the longest current OTP. I also have a soft spot for Simon x Alisha from Misfits even thought I didn’t like them as much as I do now before. 13. what was the first fandom you wrote for? CatDog, lol. It’s the earliest thing I can remember I wrote as fanfic. But I don’t really sure it’s actually the earliest.
14. what’s your favorite fic you’ve written? I’m currently more or less satisfied with all my WaP fics but Как ритм внутри тебя замыкает круг, так из меня твои прорастают корни (a duology about Sonya and Dolokhov getting together in the postcanon) and Суженый-ряженый are probably the favorite ones. I’m also weirdly proud of Наедине (Lord of the Flies by W. Golding: Jack Merridew’s character study) because I still think it’s of high quality when I reread it, even 6 years later. Which is quite an achivement given that I was 14 when I wrote it x)
