Title: Hamlet Stuffed

Artist: me

Size: 18x24

Materials: Mircron Pen; Copic, Prismacolor, and Tonbow markers; prismacolor colored pencils

I made this as a sort of personality portrait, it depicts my two favorite childhood stuffed animals, Bun and Drago, as Hamlet and Horatio in the famous gravedigging/skull scene from Shakespeare’s Hamlet. I drew it in a simplified storybook like style and took inspiration from Winnie the Pooh with the concept of stuffed animals come to life as well as Drago’s pose is inspired by Eeyore. I chose Hamlet and this scene since it’s the one “comedic” scene in such a serious play and I think it represents how I try and keep things light and fun even in serious situations. I also chose Hamlet because in middle school we put on a small classroom version of it and that’s what inspired me to join my high school’s theatre program later, which really changed the course of my life. Also the skull and that it’s a portrait with objects rather than faces also ties it into the “memento mori” theme of certain renaissance paintings.

Inktober 2017 Brush News

Great news ahead for all ink brush friends! :) In addition to the ROSSBOB wet paint brush series, I've been working on some cool new ink brushes for Procreate 4. With the latest MegaPack update you already got the new BIG IN JAPAN ink and paint brushes, which can be used with normal, glaze or wet brush render mode (3 buttons in the "dynamics" tab of the new brush menu). The first image shows demo strokes in "wet paint" mode.

Inktober 2017: Georg’s MEGA INK BRUSH

As my personal Inktober challenge, I'm creating the INKTOBER 2017 MEGA INKER brush using the amazing new Procreate 4 features! I decided to go for the look and feel of a Pentel or Tombow brush pen in normal mode, which produces "happy accidents" and nicely feathered brush strokes depending on the amount of pen pressure you apply. The ink brush can be turned into a rough marker brush with soft gradients simply by switching to "glaze" mode. You can use pen tilt in any brush mode to add a rough paper texture to your strokes.

I'm still trying out different brush tips, but maybe I'll publish one version per week so you can vote for your personal favorite? Please let me know what you think :)

If only I was this serious when I was in class back in high school. I temporarily took a break from self learning Korean, to going back to learning Spanish so I can converse with the Hubby, In-Law families, and get Chibi to speak in Spanish. Why is everyone so upset about the ODS sticker thing? Does lighting not affect color that way? I'm really confused and I know you said you work in graphic design, so can you explain?

Not gonna lie, you’re putting me in a really weird spot, Anon. I had to do a little more research, because 1) I didn’t precisely know who ODS was referring to (I don’t follow that blog) and 2) what sticker thing you meant. So now that I’m kinda caught up on it--I’m just going to approach this as I would if someone came to me with an issue at work.

I deal with graphics and printing every day. It’s part of my job; I do graphic design and marketing materials when I’m not doing tech writing, and I’ve been doing this weird mix for over a decade. When it comes to Photoshop or Illustrator or whatever graphics program you use, the colors on the screen will not be exactly what you see when you print. This is due to internal screen lighting, how RGB monitors work vs CMYK ink, etc. This means that to ensure you get an accurate sense of what your end product will look like (if your intent is print), you need to print it a few times while doing it to make sure you’re getting it right. This is especially true if you’re like me and have to match the Pantone color system. And this applies even if you work in another medium like markers and then scan it in, which I do on occasion. (Screw Copic, Tonbow makes the best marker sets omg.) The colors won’t scan precisely, so you really need to make adjustments in an app like Photoshop before proceeding.

Now, ambient lighting will affect what’s printed... but only to a point. How much it will wash it out depends on whether it’s paper, plastic, etc. What light will not do is change the base hue of a color. If it’s got warm undertones it won’t suddenly look cool, dark greens greens won’t turn bright purple, etc. If it’s green it will still be green, even with halogen or LED lightbulbs. And that seems to be where the controversy is?

I’ll put it like this. I do a lot with artwork of people who are racially diverse. If someone handed me press copy with skintones that were pale pink and told me that they were of a person I knew was supposed to be of East Asian origin, I’d demand to know what happened with the original artwork file because either they messed up when doing color correction or they didn’t pay attention to the original assignment.

It looks to be a small detail, but it has large implications to many other people. It does them a disservice, and ultimately it does the artist a disservice to their work if they don’t apply themselves to those small details because then the best of their work will get overshadowed.
