Just...gonna say it right up front. If Katara's character is turned into another girlboss warrior type the adaptation has offically failed for me. If they take out the huge part of her character that is maternal, nurturning and loving, they've lost the spirit of the character completely.

I did some thinking about it, and I realized that the new Velma show gave Daphne the Lucy Westenra treatment. In which the makers of a modern adaptation of a pop cultural horror franchise saw a female character who was hyperfeminine and loves fashion and romance and decided that that must mean she's a shallow slutty mean girl while also ignoring literally all other aspects of her original character.

I struggle with wording things succinctly, but let me try:

The obsession with Ayra vs the hatred of Sansa in the early seasons of GoT is simply due to misogyny. You hate Sansa bc she is 'traditionally feminine' and follows a more 'traditionally feminine' path, while Ayra seeks to defy the confinement of the gender roles forced upon her. And being feminine is far too often looked down on, even by people who call themselves feminist.

I like to think I hold some trad values but I feel some disgust over girls on platforms like twitter and tumblr trying to claim being pro patriarchy. The majority of them will also praise just European history and cultures, there’s so many white pride people in those communities. honestly most e-s fans arent like actual traddies even if they like the aesthetic. i think they mostly just consider the godfather of imperialism and race superiority thing under the blanket of “villain aesthetic” and like him as like, the bad boy option in a YA fantasy romance novel. their protags are usually spunky willful pretty-but-different girls full of fire and wit and funnily enough “anti traditonalist” in the way that they aren’t submissive homemakers but rather wild and uniquely smart and a bit of a manic pixie towards their uh other half who is still this relatively traditional man who loves their character the way a “man loves a woman” with assertiveness, power, protectiveness, and a hidden gentle vulnerable side that they only share with The Woman (or some feminine bridge) in their life. he does not see the woman as below him but looks to her as the one and only light and heart in his complicated life, something venerated despite the fact she might be considered “weird” by larger society. in a sense they want to flip around the woman-supports-man into a man-supports-woman thing but with the picture intact. like the point isn’t being a…TRADDIE traditonal woman but a “nontraditonal” woman who is still traditionally loved by a fairly traditonal man in that they like the romantic conflict between “strong willed feminine who subverts expectations of piety” vs “stubborn powerful masculine who subverts expectations of moralism” and the compromise found between that. everything else matters very little.

so 2: has G-d making Adam and Eve, man and women they created them and we learn that man are suppose to cling to their wives and be fruitful and multiply. Which are parts of jewish life that alot of queer jewish people struggle with.

For the issue of being fruitful and mulitplying we could see this in a different perspective. Are we really being fruitful and perserving our community if we abandon ourselves and enter marriages and have kids that we never wanted. are we going to have happy communites if our spouses and kids are unwanted.

We create a future for ourselves and for queerness.

And for gender in judaism. Despite torah having many examples of gender fluidity (including adam and eve being originally created attacted back to back, adam had both genders), Halacha is alot more ridge in it’s gender binary. perisex Non-binary jews figuring what rituals they should do could take example from halachic rulings on intersex/andronyos people and say that generally you do duties of men and women but when you have to chose between something for men and women that you should do the thing for men because male characteristics over power the feminine ones.

The other point of view you could have is inspired by the early jewish femminists. They fought to be included in jewish life and to have a say in jewish communities. Just because for a long time rabbim were men and wrote with their male-favoring biases doesnt mean we have to continue that. and nowadays women are more included in jewish life and Judaism adapted more to the modern day. but maybe its time for another period of growth by including non-binary people who are often pushed to less observant denominations or pushed out of judaism entirally because they feel like they dont fit in and because of the transphobia they face. But while we wait for rabbis to acknowlegde non-binary people more we can take the answer of what rituals to do as “what rituals will keep you particpating” what if doing rituals that are gendered in a certain way makes you unhappy then don’t do them and find the rituals that do make you happy. You aren’t going to want to particpate in Judaism if it doesn’t make you happy.
