Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima). Almost as great as my originary nemesis, Chinese fucking privet. Definitely warrants long sleeves, gloves, this facial expression, and multiple sharp blades since in addition to sucking in general, this invasive nightmare plant can cause contact dermatitis. It's currently trying to kill my citrus trees. Somebody please tell me they know a way to kill it that doesn't involve 2x/year applicaton of herbicide or some shit. As it is, we have 10 acres of pretty much privet, tree of Heaven, and camphor fighting it out. It's a who's who of the shittiest invasive trees in North America. It's a case study in why you have to *manage forested areas.* It's an uphill battle. Rafael Sánchez, Tree of Heaven

Signs are everywhere, and objects have a life that stems from the atomic level. Rafael Sánchez’ exhibit Tree of Heaven, which is up at Marlborough Gallery Viewing Room until December 22, vibrates with motion, beauty, and storytelling—the room radiates an energy...warming...inviting.

Ever since first meeting Rafael, I noticed he’s in tune with an ability to sense communications from objects and their surroundings. I felt comfortable right away with this shared quality, as poetry often stems from the acknowledgment of ethereal communication.

Art is a shamanic, poetic practice. The objects created—or found, nurtured, and transmuted—intuitively find a place within a landscape of the mind, and later the landscapes of installations, performance, exhibits….

Tree of Heaven is the result of a practice of intention.

After Rafael’s partner, the artist Kathleen White, passed away in September 2014, Rafael went into a time of mourning that included a hiatus from drawing. Fast forward to spontaneous drawing circles (‘Magic Mirror’) at Joel Handorff’s place, and New Year’s Eve 2016-2017. Joel and I had made dinner, and Rafael came over with Gail (Thacker). After dinner, and past midnight, we all sat and did portraits and drawings of objects.

Rafael did a drawing of chairs, I did a drawing of Gail that ended up in the show Rafael curated in Provincetown at AMP Gallery, The form is stone, the dress is rain. It was a momentous evening. Rafael drew a thickly multilayered circle with an orange crayon on a notebook, and this became the genesis of a process that would lead to the piece Sun (w/ splinter), where he applied yellow crayon over and over and ended with a gilded splinter falling serendipitously into place.

Weather Station II sits like a ballerina in the middle of the Marlborough Viewing Room, the latest in a series of pieces that continue Rafael’s work with umbrellas, and balloons. With “arms” extended, the installation unifies a pair of performance shoes and a Pink Jar—full of razors used to prepare for performances—with Ghost Dance, a form emerging on paper from strawberry juice.

The eye moves towards 3 Jars, a piece comprised of three honey jars with objects, an intuitive exercise which arose out of dealing with having become HIV+. Rafael told me the jars, with their mysterious content that evolves through time, are batteries: “They are obviously storage vehicles—the meaning and behavior of what is inside intensify over time. Unlike ‘useful’ batteries, as communication vessels these gain power over time. Joseph Beuys made a piece called Capri Battery with a yellow light bulb that plugs into a lemon…the idea of energy and transmission is very clear and I think of that work as a relative to the honey jars. I guess it is not too far-fetched to think of all the medicinal ramifications that can also be associated with the materials.”

Rafael’s book stand, which he started with Kathleen and sets up when he feels like it, across the entrance to his home, is half actual point-of-sale and half installation. The folding tables are open tableaux where Rafael places objects, books, and creations in a constant experiment of association and context.

One night, while visiting the book stand, Rafael was sitting next to a curious lightbulb sitting on a mason jar filled with rubber bands, which he explained he had found and collected from the sidewalks. He told me this was a new sculpture and asked me how does one say ‘mason jar’ in Spanish. I figured ‘tarro de albañil,’ so the piece became Tarro de albañil con ligas rojas y bombillo.

I had a new notebook and made a drawing of the sculpture with my blue rollerball pen while sitting at the stand. I realized, as I made the lines of the drawing, how the process was exactly analogous to writing poetry...the meshing and placement of the lines would change them in the same way as words change on a page.

Rafael graciously included the drawing in the show, placing it next to his sculpture. He also included a Polaroid of him by Gail, who has captured myriad moments of Rafael’s performances and life moments, generating more artistic layers.

A grove of intentions, energized objects doing their quiet work...dynamic and emanating, Tree of Heaven amply demonstrates that well-being, a heavenly state, is here among us if we take a moment to stop and perceive.

अतिक्रमण के क्षेत्र में आ रहे दुर्लभ कल्पवृक्षों को बचाने के लिए अधिकारियों ने बदल दिया कलेक्ट्रेट का नक्शा

चैतन्य भारत न्यूज सागर. कल्पवृक्ष एक विशेष वृक्ष है। पौराणिक धर्म ग्रंथों और हिंदू मान्यताओं के अनुसार, माना जाता है कि इस वृक्ष के नीचे बैठकर व्यक्ति जो भी इच्छा करता है, वह पूर्ण हो जाती है। यह दुर्लभ व पौराणिक कल्पवृक्ष मध्यप्रदेश के सागर में भी है। जिलाधिकारी कार्यालय परिसर में मौजूद दो कल्पवृक्ष अतिक्रमण की जद में आ रहे थे, जिसके तहत उसे काटा जाना था। लेकिन अधिकारियों की सूझबूझ से इन दोनों वृक्षों को एक बार फिर जीवन मिल गया। अधिकारियों ने वृक्षों को ना काटकर निर्माणाधीन कार्यालय का नक्शा ही बदल दिया। (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || ).push({}); ये दोनों कल्पवृक्ष जिला मुख्यालय में बने ज्वाइंट कलेक्ट्रेट भवन में हैं। दोनों बरकरार रहे इसलिए जिला प्रशासन द्वारा भवन के नक्शे में कई बदलाव कर दिए गए। जानकारी के मुताबिक, जिले के तीन कलेक्टरों के निर्देशन में बने इस भवन की भूमि को अतिक्रमण मुक्त करने के लिए प्रशासन ने कानूनी कार्रवाई से निपटते हुए करीब 40 साल पुराना अतिक्रमण सख्ती से हटाया। लेकिन जब बात इन दोनों वृक्षों को हटाने की आई तो अधिकारियों ने भवन के पूर्व निर्धारित नक्शे और डिजाइन को ही बदल दिया। शंकराचार्य भी आ चुके हैं दर्शन करने जानकारी के मुताबिक, ज्वाइंट कलेक्ट्रेट भवन के निर्माण के बाद मुख्यमंत्री कमलनाथ यहां का उद्घाटन करेंगे। बता दें इस भवन की एक ही छत के नीचे कई विभाग होंगे। यह भवन करीब 15 करोड़ रुपए की लागत से 2700 वर्गमीटर में बना है। 1995-96 में शंकराचार्य जयेंद्र सरस्वती जब सागर आए थे और उन्हें यहां इन कल्पवृक्षों के होने की जानकारी हुई तो वह भी इनके दर्शन करने पहुंचे थे। कहां-कहां हैं कल्पवृक्ष दुनियाभर में कल्पवृक्ष केवल अफ्रीका, ऑस्ट्रेलिया और भारत में ही पाया जाता है। भारत में रांची, मंदसौर, अल्मोड़ा, काशी, नर्मदा किनारे, कर्नाटक में कुछ स्थानों पर यह वृक्ष पाया जाता है। इस वृक्ष की आयु साढ़े चार हजार वर्ष से भी ज्यादा मानी गई है। इस वृक्ष की शाखाएं नीचे और जड़ें ऊपर की ओर होती है। इस वृक्ष का उल्लेख गीता में भी किया गया है। पौराणिक ग्रंथों के मुताबिक, समुद्र मंथन से प्राप्त 14 रत्नों में से कल्पवृक्ष भी एक था। इस वृक्ष को इंद्र देव को दिया गया था। फिर इंद्र देव ने इसकी स्थापना सुरकानन वन में की थी। शास्त्रों में कहा गया है कि, जो भी व्यक्ति इस वृक्ष के नीचे बैठकर सच्चे मन से प्रार्थना करता है, उसकी हर इच्छा पूरी हो जाती है। ये हैं कल्पवृक्ष की खासियत विश्व स्वास्थ्य संगठन (डब्ल्यूएचओ) के मुताबिक, हमारे शरीर में आवश्यक 8 अमीनो एसिड में से 6 इस वृक्ष में पाए जाते हैं। कल्पवृक्ष एक परोपकारी वृक्ष है, जिसमें संतरे से 6 गुना ज्यादा विटामिन ‘सी’ मिलता है और गाय के दूध से दोगुना कैल्शियम होता है। कल्पवृक्ष की 3 से 5 पत्तियों का रोजाना सेवन करने से हमारे दैनिक पोषण की जरूरत पूरी हो जाती है। साथ ही इस वृक्ष की पत्तियां कब्ज और एसिडिटी में भी सबसे कारगर है। कल्पवृक्ष के पत्तों में एलर्जी, दमा, मलेरिया को समाप्त करने की शक्ति होती है। गुर्दे के रोगियों के लिए भी इसकी पत्तियों व फूलों का रस लाभदायक है। जहां भी कल्पवृक्ष अधिक संख्या में पाया जाता है, वहां सूखा नहीं पड़ता। कल्पवृक्ष की यह भी खासियत है कि, यह अपने आस-पास कीट-पतंगों को फटकने तक नहीं देता है और दूर-दूर तक वायु के प्रदूषण को समाप्त कर देता है। Read the full article
