My theory (the one that I had to change because research) was about Doc Janus’ potions and what they do—
Anyhoo, long story short, the potions are standard dnd potions and will do the following…💛🖤
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Source:
Not that it matters but my OG theory involved how the potions gave the drinker traits of the sides depending on which one they drank
ie. the purple potion would give the drinkers fight or flight strength; ability to talk to spiders; etc… a la Virgil’s traits
But it’s debunked

The Choosing Ball
----
The law is clear and very very simple: Janus must choose someone at the ball to become his future husband or wife. He would have two days to pick and at the ball they would choose. If he refused or wasn't chosen, he would be considered an outcast, a criminal against the state. Easy, simple, there was just one tiny problem.
Janus was already in love with someone else. Someone who he didn't have the option to choose.
Fortunately for him, Prince Roman doesn't seem to see that as a problem at all.

Ok if you can't tell I'm very excited about posting this. I actually considered for a while using this as my entry for the TS Storytime Big Bang (btw, go sign up, lol) but I decided against it, so now you guys have it!
I've had this sitting in my google docs for a very long time, I tried my best to fix up grammar and stuff, especially in the first part, but please bare in mind that it's probably not as good as it could have been, I don't have anyone to beta read for me, lol.
Regardless, I really hope you guys enjoy this au as much as I do!!

“I know, my darling,” Janus whispered quietly into the dark of his room, the man curled into his side on the comfortable window seat groaned and shifted, “It’s unfair.”
“But why,” Virgil hissed out, Janus carded fingers through his hair, trying in vain to calm him as he had been doing all evening, but his personal guard - and secret romantic partner - was so worked up that even now he refused to relax, “What will happen to us after this weekend? My prince… I don’t want this to stop…”
“I know, darling,” Janus whispered again, squeezing Virgil’s shoulders. The situation they were in was indeed an unorthodox one. Virgil was his guard, no-one of noble blood, it just so happened that he had been the best that the castle could hire. Janus had found that he’d taken an immediate liking to the anxious boy - it was deceptive, how nervous he was, Janus had seen him with a sword, and Virgil could be deadly even without one - the moment he’d been presented in the throne room.
“I must pick a husband or wife at The Choosing Ball,” Janus said, quoting the law he knew off by heart, “If a royal has not found their partner by midnight on the night of this decennial ball, they shall be exiled, disowned and outcast, no longer considered of royal blood.”
“You’re twenty three years old now,” Virgil murmured sadly, “So you have to go this time.”
“Yes,” Janus nodded, “And you will be accompanying me.”
“I- what?” Virgil shot up, wide eyed, “But- but isn’t the ball only for royals and nobles?”
“It is, though we are allowed to bring some guards and servants, though weapons must be deposited on entrance,” Janus said, pulling a scroll from his sleeve, as though he’d just made it appear, and handing it to Virgil, “Here, all the regulations are written.”
Virgil read for a moment, before his eyes went wide, “Any servants or guards accompanying the royals and nobility will be given separate chambers? We’ll… be apart?”
“Indeed,” Janus said, tone a little sad, before scowling “It is supposed to help give us a chance to bond with the other candidates, since we will be sharing rooms with the ones the organisers consider us most likely to get along with, it is not necessarily to help up find our matches, moreso to strengthen future relations between kingdoms,”
“So we… won’t be able to see each other?” Virgil asked, voice shaking a little, Janus knew that he was panicking, trying hard to push the anxiety away, he was losing the battle quickly.
“You can accompany me around the castle and at the ball itself,” Janus reassured, kissing his cheek, “And besides, I am known for my ability to sneak, I’m sure I’ll be able to sneak out and find you at nigh.”
He pressed another kiss to the top of his lover’s head, pulling him close and rubbing his ungloved hand up and down his arm. Virgil relaxed, if only slightly. Later, Janus would lift him and move them over to his bed, curling himself protectively around his guard- though it should really be the other way around- and falling asleep.
—-
The next day, the castle was all a flurry. Handmaids manhandled him into a luxurious bath, scrubbing him down harshly. They didn’t care about his winces and huffs when their sponges and brushes moved too close to the delicate snake scales adorning the left side of his face - which also ran all down his chest and arm and coated his hand. Afterwards, he was manhandled back out of the bath and forced into more formal clothes than he would normally ever wear, even for council meetings with his father.
The morning passed in a daze as servants rushed around, making sure everything he would need for the three day long trip was packed up and making sure he himself was ready. He couldn't find a moment of peace - or even a moment to see Virgil (his guard was getting much the same treatment as himself since everyone who would be in their convoy had to look perfect).
Even in his room he was constantly being addressed by servant after servant, one bringing him the jewellery the seamstress had instructed go with his clothes and making sure it was all fastened properly. Three maids came in after that to comb and style his hair, a crown of braids pulled back into a perfectly neat bun on the back of his head that would keep his actual crown (which was to be brought to him later) secure on his head.
The crown had a black veil attached to one half, hiding the golden scales on his face, the curse made him look unbecoming, they said.
By noon most of the convoy was ready to set off and the few handmaids and servants who would be making the journey with him were already settling into their own carriages. Janus still hadn’t seen Virgil, who was supposed to be riding in Janus’ carriage with him at his request. He was starting to become worried. He was stopped though by the approach of the king.
“Father,” Janus bowed deeply as the king stopped in front of him, placing a heavy hand on his shoulder. Janus looked up, worried, wondering if he was about to be lectured for… something.
“Son,” His father responded, though he seemed to lose words after that, he took a moment to recover, when he did he didn’t sound angry, just… tired, “Just- please pick someone, Janus, you are my only son, I can’t lose you.”
Janus’ stomach did a flip, but all he did was take a deep breath to calm himself, before speaking, “I’ll… try, father.”
“Good boy,” His father nodded, stepping back and looking him over, eyes flickering to his scales, now hidden by a veil that made it even more difficult than normal to see though his left eye, “The handmaids did a good job making you look presentable.”
“Indeed,” Janus replied through gritted teeth, he never really knew how to feel about the way they treated his curse, but now there were more pressing matters, “Father, has anyone seen my guard? Storme? I haven’t seen him and he should be accompanying me.”
“I’ll have someone look for him,” His father nodded, “Get comfortable son, you have a long journey ahead of you.”
—-
“We found your guard, sire,” two other guards called from outside his carriage, “He’s not in the best state, we managed to get him out of the palace, but he’s asking for you.”
Janus was out of the carriage in two seconds flat, and the two guards led him back up the driveway to the doors, where another guard was holding onto Virgil. He looked absolutely stunning, decked out in the castle guard uniform, his own hair done up neatly and a shining sword at his back, though Janus quickly stopped his train of though, this wasn’t the time for admiring his partner who at present looked to be hyperventilating. The guard holding him let go as Janus approached, the prince crouched down next to Virgil, resting a gentle hand on his back.
“Shh,” Janus whispered, drawing the ‘s’ out into a low hiss- he’d learned the sound was calming for Virgil, though he tried his best to repress the hiss in regular conversation- “I’m here, I’m safe, you're alright, deep breaths, Vee.”
“Jan?” Virgil murmured, finally looking up, his pupils were blown wide in panic, “You’re here?”
“I’m here,” He nodded, gently rubbing Virgil’s back. He could feel the guards gawking at them, so he shot them a glare over his shoulder.
“Inform the convoy that we will be present momentarily,” Janus commanded them, one nodded and the three scurried off, leaving them relatively alone.
“Can you walk?” Janus asked, voice gentle, “I will be able to comfort you better once we’re situated in the carriage.”
“I thought…” Virgil mumbled, already trying to get to his feet, “I thought you’d leave me behind…”
“Now why would I do that?” Janus asked, bracing Virgil with an arm so that he wouldn’t fall, “Of all the stupid things,”
“I… don’t know,” Virgil looked away, ashamed, “My thoughts ran from me again, I’m sorry.”
“Now now, I thought I’d gotten you to stop with apologising for that,” Janus said, flicking Virgil’s nose with a finger to show he wasn’t angry.
“Sorry,” Virgil mumbled again as they finally reached the carriage, the door was held open for him and he stepped inside, before turning to help Virgil in as well.
“Close the curtain,” He commanded, though gently, as he reached to close the other. Virgil did so quickly, before slumping down onto the seat, Janus sat carefully next to him, taking his hand and squeezing it gently.
"Are you alright?" Janus asked once they were finally in private.
Virgil hesitated, taking a few deep breaths before sighing, "I’m much better now, thanks to you."
"You're certain?" Janus asked, reaching his other hand to cup Virgil's face, running a thumb over his cheek. He saw the blush creeping onto his guard's pale face and smiled.
"I'm alright, I swear it," Virgil nodded, turning his face in order to kiss Janus' gloved palm.
“You look gorgeous,” Janus said with a smile, lowering his hand to his lap and gently nudging Virgil's shoulder with his own. Virgil turned to him, rolling his eyes.
“They- they pinned back my bangs,” He said, a hint of annoyance in his voice, Janus couldn’t help but chuckle, giving Virgil a distraction would help even more than his presence alone already had, he knew.
“Yes, and I can see your pretty eyes now,” Janus grinned, leaning forward a little so they were mere inches apart, staring into the deep purple of Virgil’s eyes, the head of the convoy had called for everyone to begin heading out and the carriages all began moving,
“I can’t see yours,” Virgil said, glaring at the veil before reaching forward and pushing it out of the way, trying to tuck it behind his ear, Janus couldn’t help but smile, in the end Virgil gave up and simply took off the crown altogether, “There, much better,”
"I'm glad to see that you are feeling better,” Janus said, he couldn’t help leaning forward to press a kiss to Virgil’s cheek, "And I'm sorry I couldn't come to find you sooner,"
“It's alright, my own fault anyway for letting my thoughts get to me so much,” Virgil said quietly, leaning forward to kiss Janus’ cheek in return, though Janus turned his head at the last seconds and caught Virgil’s lips with his own, when they broke apart, Virgil’s face was red with blush and Janus couldn’t help but chuckle.
“Good,” he said, before returning for another kiss.
—-
The castle in which the ball was held was bigger than his own, though it was also in the middle of nowhere with no surrounding kingdom. Royals and the highest of nobility from all of the ruling kingdoms in each of the twelve surrounding countries would be attending, so Janus had really no idea what to expect after they arrived. Likely to be forced into mingling with forty-odd other barely adult royals and nobles. How annoying.
“Once we leave the carriage we will be separated,” Janus warned Virgil, squeezing his hands tightly, “As they will be showing us to our sleeping quarters, I will come and find you as soon as I can, alright my darling?”
Virgil nodded, pulling back one of the curtains to look out of the window only to see the carriage pass under an enormous, elaborately decorated gateway.
“You’d better be ready to tell me about how awful all your roommates are when you do,” Virgil smiled at him, though it didn't quite reach his eyes.
“Oh trust me, I’m sure I’ll have much to complain about when we meet again,” Janus smiled, before reaching up to remove one of his earrings- an ear cuff designed to look like a snake coiled around his upper ear- and handed it to Virgil, “Keep this safe for me until I come back, will you?”
“Of course,” Virgil said with a nod. It was a game they liked to play, really, whenever Janus or Virgil had to leave for whatever reason, Janus would give Virgil a piece of his jewellery to ‘keep safe’ until they met again. It seemed to help with the anxiety of being apart. Though Janus would never admit that it helped him as well as Virgil to deal with separation.
Janus sighed as the carriage stopped moving and he began to hear a flurry of noise from outside. He pressed a quick kiss to Virgil’s forehead, squeezing his hand one last time and hastily returning his crown to his head before the door of the carriage was opened for them and they stepped out. Immediately Janus was whisked away by a person who was unfamiliar to him, though from their clothes Janus could guess that they worked for the castle’s staff.
“I will be showing you to your room, your highness,” The butler informed, “And I am head of servants for your room during your stay, You may call me Elliott, if you need me for any reason, do not hesitate to ask another servant to retrieve me,”
Janus only hummed an acknowledgment, keeping his expression set in stone. Gone were the kind smiles and gentle words he allowed to be shared with Virgil, now all they would see was the stone cold face of the serpent prince, as the rumours called him.
As they walked, Elliott had informed him that he was the first of his room to arrive, and that he’d be staying with three princes other than himself, though he wasn’t informed of who exactly they were, and he didn’t particularly care, as for now he was focusing on surveying the area and committing the rooms he saw and the route they took to memory.
They stopped when they arrived at his room, Elliott opened the doors wide and allowed him to look around their shared chambers. The room was shaped as an octagon, with four beds large enough to fit three larger people comfortably each on every opposite wall. Each fourth of the room seemed to be identical, with a vanity and dresser each, though each space was decorated differently, with different delicately painted art on the walls of each quadrant, different colours and designs of bedsheets and drapes. It seemed that the room was designed as four separate rooms with the walls between them simply removed.
“Since you are the first to arrive, you’re able to choose which space you want,” Elliott told him, “Your belongings will be brought up later in the day, otherwise you are asked to wait here until all of your roommates arrive unless informed otherwise, and then you will be given free reign to explore the castle until the communal banquet at eight this evening.”
With Janus’ sharp nod of understanding, Elliott left him in the room alone. Immediately Janus moved towards the section of the room decorated in purple and gold. The wall art depicted scenes of nature- golden vines with lilac flowers wrapping delicately around each other in front of a background that showed through different shades of purple. The bedsheets were plum, with royal purple and gold patterning stamping similar curling vines into the sheets. Janus found the colour reminded him of Virgil- purple was always his guard’s favourite colour.
He found there was nothing much to do- if he were to be confined to this room until his roommates arrived- so he simply laid down on the centre of the bed and resigned himself to wait.

Sorry if this is random, but not many people are in the rswr fandom so you may be flooded with questions for the next week.
how related do you think Roman from sanders sides is to Roman from rswr? I know they address it in the first episode a little, but it’s still unclear to me. They seem very different in terms of personality and goals. It can’t be a coincidence because Thomas sanders wouldn’t just use one of the names of his well established characters for nothing.
sorry again, this was really long.
No need to apologise for sending me asks! I'm always happy to talk, especially about roleslaying
This is a topic that's been rattling around my head for a while so here goes
I would agree with you there, sanders sides and roleslaying with roman are very different. Different universe, characters, message, tone, etc. I think there's probably no in-universe connection between the two series tbh (although it can be fun to imagine the roleslaying universe as the creation of princey, for example).
Some people call roleslaying a spin-off of sanders sides but I'm not a fan of that tbh. It's a show that involves a guy who makes another show, not a spin off. Roleslaying has a much larger cast of entirely new characters, much more worldbuilding and whats looking to be a more complicated plot. Spin-offs usually take place at least in the same universe as the original media, but that's clearly not whats happening here.
Plus if it was a spin-off or if sanders sides had any real in-universe significance to roleslaying, "doc" Janus probably would have had more than 5 minutes screen time and Roman would be more similar to side!Roman
Personally, I think that dnd is the kind of game where someone who has an established oc might choose to adapt them to fit a new universe, because people are very attached to their ocs and it's fun! I do feel that at it's core, roleslaying is just thomas and his friends having fun and telling us a cool story as theu do it.
So Roman was taken from the sanders sides universe because he was an established character who Thomas enjoyed playing, and then he created a new character based partially on side!Roman and partially adapted to better fit the context of the campaign. A prince really wouldn't have fit with the story they're telling here, and changing that part of Princey changes a lot of Roman's character so we end up with a very different person. But they have the same name because rswr!Roman came from side!Roman.
When it comes to doc Janus, some people might say that he was there as a way to grab sanders sides fans' attention and in some ways I'd agree. But I also think his inclusion in the story (and likely any inclusion of other ts characters in the future) probably started from AJ thinking "hey my friend has these cool ocs, and the character he's playing is already inspired by them, I bet he'd enjoy it if we put some of his ocs into the campaign!" But doc janus isn't plot relevant or anything because at the end of the day, roleslaying isn't supposed to be a spin-off or sanders sides focused at all
So. This got a bit longer than I was expecting but to summarise. I think that the roleslaying and sanders sides universes are totally separate, but they have references between them just for fun. It's like the equivalent of putting a character into a private campaign as a reference to an inside joke, except theres an audience who's also in on it
I know my mutuals have a lot of thoughts on this topic too so if anyone else has something to say, go ahead! This is just how I personally think of the 2 universes and what I'm guessing the intentions are behind how they reference each other

carry them home (1)
warnings: arguing, cliffhanger
-
Despite their best efforts, the kid stood out from the moment they entered town.
They walked stiffly, their posture ramrod under unfamiliar stares and their steps just a bit too fast to be measured. It was as though they were masquerading as a tiny adult, complete with an air of faux importance that mustn’t be interrupted.
In a town as small as this, everyone knew everyone, which meant that there wasn’t a person out on the street who didn’t notice the strange cloaked child striding down the road with purpose.
Janus had noticed first, of course. It was in his nature to be observant like that.
So, by the time the kid was done attracting the attention of the local gossips and therefore the entire population, Janus had long since found himself a seat across the way, content to subtly track the kid’s progress all the way down to the little menagerie shop on the corner.
After just enough time had passed that the less nosy neighbors had returned to their own business, he closed his book, dusted himself off, and headed down the cobblestone path after them.
How fortunate that he happened to have a tome to return to the shop’s owner.
The kid, apparently inspecting a corner of bookshelves quite intently, went entirely rigid when the little bell overhead announced a new customer. They weren’t foolish enough to spin around defensively, but Janus could tell he was being watched with tense anticipation.
He didn’t even bother glancing that way, instead waving as the owner caught sight of him and smiled brightly. His book provided a convenient excuse for him to strike up a conversation with her, and before long, the mystery kid returned to browsing the shelves, a bit more relaxed now that another patron had showed up to drag the owner’s attention away from them.
Janus idled for a while as the shopkeep rattled off recommendations for future reading, weighing his options. Being in close enough quarters to see what the kid bought would make it much easier to figure out which lies were at play here, but if the kid was on the skittish side, they would wait until Janus left to make a purchase.
Before he could decide one way or another, the kid chose for him, walking confidently up to the counter and setting down a stack of books. Their hands were gloved, Janus noted.
“I’d like to purchase these, please.” The words were carefully enunciated, only adding to the mature adult impression.
The shopkeep looked at the kid as though she wasn’t quite sure what to make of them, but after a moment of pointed silence, she shifted to the side to face them properly. “And how’ll you be paying then?”
Her tone, somewhere between amused and suspicious, made their shoulders pull up further, bristling with indignation under their cloak. With sharp movements, they retrieved a small pouch from their person and upended it.
Several shining trinkets fell out, a few crusted with dirt or rust, almost all having inset jewels of some kind.
To exactly none of Janus’s surprise, the woman recoiled at the sight of them.
“Do you think me a fool?” she asked, all amusement wiped from her voice. The kid took a step back, glancing at the door before remembering themself. “That I’ll take any shiny token as payment from a stranger, that I know nothing of curses or tricks? I’d bet a greater sum that these will turn to rock when the sun’s peak has passed.”
“It is not— They’re all in reasonable condition, there’s no reason to believe they’re charmed,” the kid argued, frustration seeping into the edges of their words.
“No reason not to either, is there?” the shopkeep retorted sharply.
Apparently unable to see a losing battle for what it was, the kid opened their mouth to continue—
And was cut off by the distinct clink of solid silvercoin placed on the counter. “I’ll buy the kid a book.”
Both parties turned to Janus in varying levels of silent disbelief. He shrugged, pulling on the amicable half-smile of his current persona, the harmless traveler who dropped by every so often, one who had been staying in town for the past few weeks.
“Just the one, though. There’s a reason I normally pay the loan fee for books rather than start my own collection.”
Shadowed by the hood, the kid’s lips went a little less thin, some of their wariness fading at the understanding that Janus was a purveyor of knowledge himself. It wasn’t quite enough, though. “And what do you want in return?”
The words were half-recited, clearly a familiar phrase, which made Janus’s skin prickle slightly. He didn’t let the tension show. A common bartering phrase was no surefire sign of a fae, and he’d certainly sense the magic if a Deal was being struck. “If you want to pay me back, I’m willing to chance one of the trinkets you brought. I do hope you’ll give me the least cursed one, though.”
His words coaxed a snort from the shopkeep, but he could see the way some of the tension loosened from the kid’s frame. They’d assumed his game was the jewels, that he’d realized they were real and jumped on the opportunity to obtain them.
Which wasn’t entirely incorrect. He would never turn down a good advantage, after all.
“Very well.” The kid carefully shuffled through the stack, setting a few titles aside almost mournfully. Janus plucked a ring inset with rubies from the trinket pile and cast a speculative eye over the rejected manuscripts.
A few were as he half-suspected: Toidi’s Guide to Alchemy, Star Alignments and Spellcasting-- even the book on common dissection practices was well within the interests of a burgeoning mage. Some of them, however, (an illustrated children’s book featuring a frog and a spider, a well-worn play script, and a booklet full of plant diagrams) were more obscure in nature.
In the end, the book that they slid firmly across the counter to him was the truly interesting one. He caught the slow tilt of the shopkeeper's expression, from grudgingly tolerant to the beginnings of genuine suspicion.
“The Soothsayer’s Codex,” he read aloud, ignoring the way the kid was going tenser by the moment. He met the shopkeeper’s gaze with a sort of friendly nostalgia, silently inviting her to share in it. “Quite an interesting choice. I remember being young, and trying to read every old, magic-looking book I could get my hands on. They were always longer than I expected.”
She snorted, her focus dragged away from the kid for the moment. “I suppose if kids were patient enough to get through it all, they would just wait for the future to arrive rather than trying to determine it early, hmm?”
“If only I could waste the hours away cloud watching now,” Janus replied mournfully, smiling when she laughed and slid his payment into her hand. The kid’s fists were clenched at their sides, but they were smart enough to keep their injured pride quiet.
“Oh, that we were young again,” she replied sardonically. “Take your book, child, and bring real coin next time. Pawn those trinkets off on Johansson, maybe.” She added with a snicker.
The kid barely glanced at her before holding out a hand expectantly, and Janus handed the bound pages over obligingly. They shuffled it under their cloak, and he took the opportunity to nudge the door open, gesturing for them to go ahead with a smile.
He maintained the harmless demeanor even as he followed and fell into step with the kid. Their cloaked head snapped up sharply, eyes certainly assessing him under the hood, and Janus held his hands up inoffensively.
“Just thought you might like some company getting out of town,” he spoke smoothly. “There are some real busybodies who might object to a mystery kid wandering around alone, but I figure you’re probably well enough at taking care of yourself.” He hesitated, and then added, “I’ve been there. I’ll ward them off for you.”
The kid visibly bit down on their first retort, taking a deep breath before turning and continuing down the path. “Do what you will.”
Janus ambled alongside them, greeting those he passed and receiving greetings in turn. His gambit worked like a charm; the more superstitious folks saw him with the kid and assumed that he had the situation well in hand. Which was true, though not in the manner they imagined.
The kid, in turn, lost a little of that stiffness in favor of taking the town in bit by bit. They still avoided any staring, and were quite careful to keep out of Janus’s easy grabbing reach, but he could see their curious glances from the ways the hood twitched towards each new sound for inspection.
No wonder the kid had beelined for a library. They were like a sponge, soaking in anything and everything new around them.
Janus added a few extra tidbits to his polite greetings, asking after the seamster’s daughter and complimenting the health of the goat tender’s herd, strengthening bonds while also giving the kid more details to put to the roles. The kid clearly hadn’t spent much time in towns and needed all the help they could get.
If his suspicions were correct, the kid had more than a few reasons to try and learn how to blend in.
They finally reached the edge of town, where the path turned and became well-trodden dirt, curved to stay clear of the thick forest nearby.
By now, the slope of the hill kept any nosy townspeople from seeing them, and there were no passersby at this time of day. No witnesses. Janus wouldn’t have taken the risk if he hadn’t been fairly certain that the kid wasn’t planning to attack him, not for themself or another. They bore no signs of being tied to Janus’s enemies, not to mention his suspicions about their nature made it even more improbable that they were working for anyone.
Soothsaying was a trait that was only valued in those powerful enough to channel it. A church grim, white lady, or harbinger, perhaps. No self-respecting monster hunting guild would trust any of them enough to allow them to roam as a free agent for even as short a period as this.
Janus turned to the probably-inhuman child he had just escorted to town’s edge. “Well, it seems this is where we part. I hope you found what you were looking for.”
The kid had gone all stiff and twitchy again, which was smart of them. Situational awareness was one of the best assets for someone constantly being hunted.
Luckily for them, Janus wasn’t the man he’d used to be. His plot had ended the moment he’d gotten the kid out of the Iron Guard’s view without any fuss. He would be more than happy to never see them traipsing around in this town again.
“I’ll bid you goodbye, then,” he continued once it became clear that the kid wasn’t going to answer. As always, he couldn’t resist a bit of parting snark. “Next time you wander into a town, try to focus more on giving off a human impression, rather than hiding an inhuman one.”
“Just a bit of advice.” He patted the kid’s shoulder absently in farewell, and then startled when that patch of cloak twitched oddly under his hand. Rather than the solid lump of a shoulder, that had felt more like wiry tendons. Almost like there were extra limbs under there.
… He didn’t know any soothsayer types that had wings.
The kid looked up at him for the first time, and Janus had exactly enough time to think, ‘Well, shit.’ before eyes as dark as the ocean pulled him under.

If Janus has shown up in dwit, Remus would of just called him by his name, no you cannot change my mind

got a fascination (with you)
chapter 1! @heavenly-roman
Summary: Roman has a Plan™ (its effectiveness is,, debatable) Warnings: self-deprecation, maybe some secondhand embarrassment, threatened fratricide (roman doesn’t really mean it), all caps in a few spots Wordcount: 3181
Step 1 - call him pet names ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“What do you think, darling?” Roman turns to Janus for his opinion.
“Ihavetogo,” Janus says in a rush, before hurrying out of the room, face bright red.
Roman grins to glowself—he’s flustered! Glo has a chance!—and turns back to Remus.
“I guess he doesn’t want to share what he thinks.”
“…What was that.”
“What was what?”
“‘Darling?’ Since when do you call Janus ‘darling’?”
“That is step one of my master plan to woo Janus,” Roman informs him haughtily. “I was gauging his interest.”
“Or making him so uncomfortable he had to leave.”
“Wait, you think so?” Looking back with that perspective, that could definitely be the case. Oh no, what if glo’d ruined glows chance by calling Janus a pet name when he didn’t like people calling him those? What if Janus was so agitated by it he didn’t want to be friends anymore? “Shoot.”
Roman pulls out glows phone and opens glows messages with Janus. ‘dude i am so sorry, i didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable. i just’
Roman looks up at Remus. “Quick, what do I tell him I did it for?”
“I don’t know, why are you asking me? You said I’d be terrible at wooing!”
“Remus!”
“I don’t know! Say you do it with your friends sometimes? Or tell him the truth.”
“Friend thing!” Roman crows, typing ‘use pet names on my friends sometimes? but i won’t for you, sorry again’ and sending it. “Thanks, you’re a lifesaver.”
“I think the truth was the better option,” Remus tells him snobbily.
“Everyone’s a critic.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What was that?  “Darling??” Since when is Janus Roman’s darling???
Janus buries his face in his hands, keeping enough visibility that he can actually see where he’s going. He makes his way to the nearest bathroom and plops to the floor. He’s too gay to worry about germs or whatever else because Roman just called him darling.
Did that mean glo likes him back? Maybe? But surely Roman knew what glo was saying when glo called him darling, and Janus doubts glo just calls crushes darling without confessing first. That sounds like it has the potential to be incredibly awkward. But maybe glo does?
Or maybe there’s some explanation Janus had just forgotten about? Or an obvious answer that he’s just completely missed?
Roman had said it so casually. “Darling.” Like it was normal. (One part of Janus’s brain whispers what if it was normal and Janus can feel the blood rushing to his face.)
Janus’s phone dings and he pulls it out, hoping he can distract himself from the massive gay crisis he is having. No such luck, unfortunately.
‘dude i am so sorry, i didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable, i just use pet names on my friends sometimes? but i won’t for you, sorry again’
Oh. It was a friend thing. Roman didn’t mean anything by it.
Janus buries his face in his hands again, this time from embarrassment, and groans. Stupid, thinking Roman calling him darling meant anything. Although, who just calls their friends pet names randomly? That’s such a stupidly (endearingly) Roman thing to do.
Oh, he hasn’t answered Roman yet. He should do that.
Janus sits up and taps the screen so the little cursor and keyboard pop up. He thinks for a minute on how to spin his sudden departure as not very gay, then realizes Roman gave him an excuse. Wait, no, because then Roman’ll think he’s upset with glow or something because of it. Maybe he can pretend he had somewhere to be? Flimsy excuse, but he doesn’t want to leave Roman on read for longer to think of a better one and risk Roman thinking he’s mad at glow or something. The double “sorry” almost definitely means glo feels guilty for saying it.
‘it’s okay idm! I just remembered I had somewhere to be. sorry if I made you feel bad, you’re fine I promise ’
Janus rereads the message a few times, changing the exclamation point into a semicolon and rearranging the last bit so it reads ‘I promise you’re fine’ before sending it. There’s a pause of a few seconds where Janus stares at his screen, then a bouncing ellipsis appears for a moment before Roman replies ‘it’s okay!! gl with your thing!!’
Janus smiles at his screen, then puts a hand over his mouth to hide it. He’s so gone on Roman.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Step 2 - see how he reacts to the idea of them dating ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Hey, Janus!” Roman calls, running up and skidding to a stop in front of him. “Hey.”
“Hi, Roman,” Janus says, smiling at glow, which glo takes as a good sign.
“I wanted to ask you something.”
“Okay?”
Shoot, Roman realizes, I am not going to be able to just ask how he’d feel about going on a date with me. What do I do now?
“Roman?” Janus does a little wave at glow. “You good?”
“Yeah!” Roman flashes him a grin.
“What’d you wanna ask me?” Janus prompts after another few moments of Roman frantically trying to make up an excuse.
“I, uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…” Screw it. “I wanted to ask if you’d want to hang out with me sometime?” Roman winces at how squeaky glows voice got by the end of it.
“I mean, sure? Why do you sound so nervous, though? We’ve done that plenty of times before.”
Roman’s shoulders climb up near glows ears. “No, I mean like? Hanging out? One on one?” There’s a pause where Janus opens his mouth to speak and Roman realizes that glo isn’t sure glo wants to know what he’s going to say, so glo rushes out, “Oh look at the time I’ve gotta go sorry bye see ya!” and sprints off.
Roman runs outside, to glows car, and slides into the driver’s seat, letting glows head thunk against the top of the steering wheel. That certainly could’ve gone better.
It’s only after Roman’s started driving home that glo realizes glo’s finished the first two steps, which means past-Roman was too optimistic about glo’s ideas-ability and current-Roman has no clue what glo’s going to do next.
“Besides wait to see if he unfriends me because of how weird I was acting, I guess,” glo mutters to glowself. Janus doesn’t seem like the type to do that, but if he pieces together that Roman likes him, gets uncomfortable, and decides to distance himself from Roman because of that? …That sounds like an unfortunately realistic scenario.
Roman sighs. There’s nothing to do now but wait and see how (or if) Janus reacts.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Step 3 - ??? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Janus looks at the fake potted plant across the hall from where he’s standing.
“Did that seem really weird to you too or is it just me?” he asks it, in lieu of an actual human being anywhere nearby to ask.
The plant, predictably, doesn’t reply, and Janus sighs.
He considers messaging Roman to ask what all that was about, but judging from how dodgy glo was in person, Janus doesn’t think he’s going to get a better answer through text.
Was Roman asking you on a date? his traitorous brain asks, and Janus scrunches up his nose and tells it to stop seeing things that aren’t there. He’s not going to let himself assume and then make a fool of himself when he turns out to be wrong, weirding out Roman and potentially losing glow as a friend in the process.
Even if Roman’s anxiety levels did seem disproportionately high, glo’d only asked if they could hang out. They’d only hung out in groups before! They were still in the process of being comfortable around each other! Being nervous about hanging out with a friend you aren’t very close with yet is perfectly normal! If Janus’s brain could shut up about what if glo likes you back and it seemed kind of like glo might’ve been asking you on a date that would be great, thank you! He isn’t going to read too deeply into things and find some meaning that doesn’t actually exist, thank you very much!
…If this line of thought could stop sounding like he’s trying to convince himself of it, that would be great too, thanks.
Janus shakes his head to clear it and pulls out his phone, turning on some music to distract himself as he walks out to his car. He just needs to stop thinking about this for a bit, and then he can do something—ask Remus? Maybe? That sounds like a decent plan—about it later.
By the time Janus has driven home, the plan to ask Remus about it has solidified in his brain, so he goes inside and grabs an apple to snack on while he texts Remus.
‘hey’
‘Yooooooooo’ comes a few minutes later. Janus squints, counts the o’s, considers asking how Remus remembers the exact number of o’s he’s done each time so he can add one more every new conversation, then decides he doesn’t want to get into that.
‘has Roman been acting,, off? at all with you today?’
‘No why’
‘glo asked me if I wanted to hang out one on one then ran away before I could answer?? I was hoping you could tell me about that?’
‘SLDKJFSLDF glo DID??’
‘yes’
‘Omg this is too good,,,,, glo’s never living this down,,,,, tried to ask you out on a date and ran away before you could say yes KASNFKENFNSKFNE’
Wait.
Date? Roman had been trying to ask him out on a date??
Wait.
Before he could say yes???
‘remus wth’
‘I can’t,,,,,,,,, as soon as glo gets home i’m gonna look at glow and burst into laughter,,,,,,, this is amazing,,,,,,’
‘remus wdym “before i could say yes”?? who’s to say that i would’ve agreed to a date??’
‘Would u have?”
‘i mean, glo asked if we could hang out. not go on a date’
‘Okay but you totally would’ve said yes either way’
Janus doesn’t respond, trying to figure out how to deny it without sounding like a complete liar.
‘( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Your silence is condemning you fool’
‘...maybe,’ Janus finally acquiesces. ‘i admit to nothing.’ Then, because Janus is still very confused about this, ‘roman was trying to ask me out??’ Remus has been annoyingly unhelpful about answering that so far.
‘Kakandfdfas yeah’
‘i see’
‘Jdgsfskdfsdsjsjjsdj what’s that supposed to mean’
Janus leaves him on read, already plotting how to use this information to his advantage (and a little bit to spite him. Just because he can).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Virgil,” Roman groans. “I’m an idiot.”
“Yeah.”
“And Remus won’t stop laughing at me about it, thus forcing me—what do you mean ‘yeah?’ You’re supposed to be supporting me! I—you don’t even know what I’m complaining about yet!”
Virgil rolls his eyes. “Don’t need to know what you did to know you’re an idiot.”
Roman scoffs offendedly. The disrespect! And after glo is trusting him enough to open up about glows problems!
“I don’t have to take this!”
“But you will.”
Roman hums, conflicted. Usually, glo would take Virgil’s mocking, giving just as good as glo got, but glo doesn’t really feel good enough about glowself at the moment. After embarrassing glowself in front of Janus, Roman’s ego is at an all time low, and Virgil isn’t helping.
Virgil pokes glow. “If it’s bothering you I can stop.”
“Tone it back a bit?”
“Yeah, sure.”
“Thanks.”
“‘Course.” Virgil pokes glow again and Roman bats at his hand, but glo’s smiling now. “What’d you do this time, princex?”
Roman sighs and puts a hand to glows forehead dramatically, slumping back in glows seat. “It’s tragic! I’ve been humiliated and can no longer show my face around school.”
“I’m heartbroken,” Virgil deadpans. “What happened?”
“I asked—” Roman falters. This sounds… stupid. Glo asked Janus a question and then ran away before he could answer? Virgil’s probably going to laugh at glow. Roman would probably laugh if the situation was reversed. “You know what, nevermind.”
“No, what is it?” Virgil presses, smirking, but he drops it when he notices Roman’s expression. “Are you okay?”
“I’m fine, I just... don’t really want to talk about this anymore,” Roman says, putting an elbow on the table so glo can cover glows mouth with glows hand as glo looks over at the wall.
“Okay,” Virgil agrees. “Is this ‘I’m scared of being vulnerable’ don’t want to talk or something else? Because if it’s the first thing then I promise not to laugh at you or judge you or anything.”
Roman wrinkles glows nose, considering. Still staring at the wall, glo says, “I was going to ask Janus out on a date, but I chickened out and asked him how he’d feel about ‘hanging out one on one’ or something stupid, and then chickened out again and ran away before he could answer. And now I think he’s probably figured out I like him and he’ll probably stop being friends with me because now it’s weird. So.” Glo gives a short, self-deprecating laugh. “Anyway, how’re you doing?”
“I’m fine,” Virgil says lightly after a moment. “My best friend was scared to tell me something, but glo opened up anyway, so I’m proud of glow and happy glo was comfortable enough to share that with me. And despite how anxious glo is about the situation, I think it’s gonna work out for glow.”
Roman looks over at him, asking softly, “I’m your best friend?” Glo’d figured, kind of, but it was the first time either of them had said it to each other.
“I mean, one of, but yeah. I don’t annoy just anyone; my anxiety’s way too high for that.”
“And your standards,” Roman jokes, pointing glows nose in the air.
“And my standards,” Virgil agrees, grinning.
“Well, I suppose, then, that I could concede that you’re my best friend too, and that I appreciate you saying all that,” Roman says primly, making eye contact with Virgil for a moment and smiling before glancing away nervously. “Do you really think it’ll work out?”
“Oh, yeah,” Virgil says, with much more confidence than Roman thinks he maybe should have. “Definitely.”
Roman squints. “I’m trusting you.”
“As you should.” Virgil sticks his nose up in the air in what Roman is certain is a mockery of glow earlier, and so of course glo reaches over and shoves him, laughing at the indignant squawk Virgil makes. From there it devolves into them hitting at each other, not hard enough to really hurt, and laughing so hard that for a while Roman forgets about Janus.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Step 4 - profit ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ “Hey, Roman,” Janus calls, walking the last few steps over to glow. He wonders briefly if the roses are too much, but Roman’s already turned to look at him so he guesses it’s too late to try to subtly get rid of them or something.
Roman’s face does a thing, where it sort of… spasms? Just for a second, but it’s almost like a flash of fear before Roman’s grinning at him and Janus wonders if he’d imagined it.
“Hi, Janus!” glo chirps. “Whatcha got there?” Glo leans over to the side, trying to look behind Janus’s back.
“A gift,” he tells glow, “to, uh, try to— actually, yeah. Just a gift. For you.” Janus mentally facepalms. Remus said Roman likes him; he shouldn’t be so nervous about this!
“For me?” Roman’s eyebrows raise. “What’re you trying to do?”
“Um.” Janus gathers all his courage, pulling the roses out from behind his back and shoving them towards Roman as he says, “Ask you on a date?” It comes out sounding more like a question than he’d intended, and he squeezes his eyes shut, bracing.
Nothing happens, and after a few moments he opens one eye to peer nervously at Roman, who’s sitting there slack-jawed.
“Roman?” Janus asks, straightening up and letting his arms relax.
There’s a squeak.
“Are you okay?”
There’s another squeak, a lot of sputtering, and then finally glo echoes, “Date?”
“If you want to go on one?” Janus offers.
“You want to go on a date… with me?” Roman’s gaze is flickering between staring at the roses and looking up at him in bewilderment.
“I—yes?” This isn’t how Janus envisioned this going. “I like you romantically, you like me romantically, we go on a date and maybe more if we both enjoy ourselves? Does that sound right?”
Roman’s face, which had been steadily growing pinker as the conversation continued, now flames bright red, and glo buries glows face in glows hands.
“Who told you I like you?”
“Remus.”
“I’m going to kill him.” Janus can see Roman take a deep breath, shoulders rising and falling, and then glo looks up at him, face still fairly pink. “And then I’m going to go on a date with you, provided this isn’t your version of a joke or something, and then if it goes well then maybe I’ll resurrect him.”
“Sounds lovely.” Janus grins. “Maybe leave the fratricide until after the date so you don’t have to go through all the work of bringing him back to life?”
“Sure.”
Lacking any response, Janus holds the flowers back out to Roman. Glo takes them gingerly, tracing the edge of a petal and rubbing another one between glows fingers, lifting it up to sniff it and admiring the bouquet. Janus watches glow, a small smile creeping on his face at how enraptured Roman is by the flowers.
After a minute or two, Roman looks back up at him.
“Thank you,” glo says, hiding the bottom half of glows face behind the roses. “No one’s ever bought me flowers before; they’re beautiful.”
“Just like you,” Janus says before his brain can do any silly little things like consider the consequences and Not say stupidly sappy stuff. Roman’s face ducks further under the flowers, and Janus thinks he hears a squeak.
“Thank you,” glo repeats.
“You’re quite welcome, dear.” Janus tacks the pet name on as revenge for how flustered he’d been when Roman called him darling on impulse, curious to see how Roman reacts. Which is, apparently, to squeak more loudly and actually pull glows face up from the bouquet enough to glare weakly at him.
“Stoooooop,” glo complains. “I retract my agreement to date you.”
“Well, in that case, let me retract my roses.”
“No, they’re mine.” Roman clutches them closer against glows chest.
“Alright, then pay for them.”
Roman squints at him. “What’s the payment?”
Janus reaches out, gesturing towards glows hand. Roman stretches it out towards him slowly, watching for what he’s going to do. Janus takes it carefully, bending over it and looking up through his eyelashes at Roman.
“Is this okay?”
Roman nods, blushing, and Janus kisses glows hand, straightening up and smirking at glow. (And if he doesn’t release Roman’s hand, it’s surely just an oversight on his part.)
“Payment.”
“This is unfair,” Roman complains. “I had this whole plan to try and woo you and now you’re being mean and you stole my idea.”
“Well,” Janus says, squeezing glows hand a little. “I’d say your plan worked pretty well.”
Roman looks at their joined hands and squeezes back, then smiles up at Janus.
“Yeah, I’d say so too.”
🍄📚🌗
You’re a really good writer, keep up the fantastic work!!! :)
🥺🥺🥺 thank you so much omg
🍄: how do you get yourself in the mood to write?
I've been writing original fiction for eight years, so a lot of my writing process is just choosing to sit down and go for it at this point! I definitely have an easier time writing when alone, and I have a pretty big family that I've been staying with over quarantine, so I tend to get more done at nighttime when everyone else is asleep, lately.
📚: favorite fandom for write for?
Currently Sanders Sides all the way! It's also the only fandom I've published my works for so far lol. (I have a lot of Strong Opinions about Star Wars, though, so keep an eye on transkananjarrus on ao3 to eventually learn more about how every single character is queer, most of them are trans, and the Bad Batch are all autistic!) I have SO MANY ideas for TS fics and I really enjoy writing the characters; I have a whole google doc full of ideas, some of which are WIPs and some of which I'm holding off on for the moment. (Some highlights from the "holding off until I have a little more time" list of ideas: Magic Schoolbus AU; Inside Out AU; "Five Times Janus and Remus Kissed Right In Front Of Virgil's Salad (and One Time They Didn't)"; X-Men AU; Royality Tuck Everlasting AU; and a bunch of other ideas that are harder to put into quick summaries like that.)
🌗: fluff or angst?
hhhhhNNNGGGG WHY WOULD YOU MAKE ME CHOOOOOOOSE >:(((( /lh
Hmmmmm... I ADORE angst and being put in immense emotional pain/putting others in said pain, BUT I generally need the caveat of an eventual happy ending or at least the promise that they will be okay down the line. I don't like sad endings 95% of the time. (*shoves idea for sad intrulogical songfic based on 18 by anarbor behind my back* shhhh ignore that.) BUT i find it much easier to write fluff than angst. and I do love fluff. HHHHH i can't choose I really like both lol.
Ty for the ask!!
ask me: fic writer edition!
I might have spent a few hours on this and don’t hate it. I wrote their names kinda???? how I’d picture them writing them but Roman’s is a bit messy to be Roman.
Anyway this is my headcanons for everyone’s eyes and skin tones. Virgil has spider eyes but his regular eyes are based off the puppet colours , Janus has a snake eye and the only one with an eye that matches Thomas, Roman has blue-ringed octopus pupils with green eyes and same Remus but red eyes, Logan has human eyes but dark blue and finally Patton has bullfrog pupils with light blue eyes.
Yes they all have minour eyebags except Remus. Also I’m including two versions, one with their colours and one without.
I’ll be honest this is the first fully rendered piece since Janus’ birthday piece (which I genuinely dislike so fucking much, why is his face so skinny???)
anyway this is gonna be like the only time I tag @thatsthat24  because I really like this drawing.
Touched-Starved Janus Pt. 1
It’s been almost two weeks since I mentioned I started writing this, and I said Monday I’d post this this week, well....the week...hasn’t ended it’s only 00:15 on Sunday. This is being broken into multiple parts, idk how many yet, because my doc is at 3.2k words and is 6 pages long. So! Enjoy Part One of the Touch-Starved Janus fic!
Ao3 Link | Part Two | Part Three | Part Four | Part Five |
Taglist!( Please let me know if you want to be added for future parts or if you wish to be removed): @daroamine, @janus-sanders-pain, @imma-potatoo, @whatishappeningrightnow
Summery: Janus is more snake than previously perceived and reacts violently at the sight of the others hugging, only for it to be revealed Janus hasn’t been hugged in years, so long my that he's even forgotten what hugs are,,,, just how touch-starved is he?
Pairings: Platonic Dukeceit (Parental Remus) , Referenced Past Platonic Anxceitmus
Warnings: overstimulation, swearing, Remus yells at the others at one point, swearing, bold and italicized text, referenced unsympathetic unnamed dark sides and Idk what else please tell me if I need additional tags
Additional Notes: So there is,,,,a lot of headcanons by me in this? Like I headcanon Janus as being the youngest side and being like....really young, just barely 21 young. Also there is a lot of parental and protective Remus. This is also probably really OOC but I don’t mind much tbh?
Janus was in the living room, lounging in the early morning sunbeam that was hitting the couch and reading a book. Virgil was on the opposite side of the couch, scrolling through his phone. The two had fallen into this rhythm of this a month ago when Janus and Remus’ rooms had been moved over to the ‘light’ side as they had been accepted fully by Thomas. It had taken a heavy conversation between all of them and a lot of apologies but they were slowly going back to being a real family like they had been before the mindscape split.
Patton walked into the room and smiled at the two sides on the couch, he was so happy everyone has been getting along, especially Remus and Janus with the others. Sometimes he still felt a bit guilty having sent away the previous ‘dark’ sides, but he knew that it wasn’t good to hold onto that guilt when they’ve stated their forgiveness.
He continued his way to the kitchen to begin making breakfast for all the sides. That was also something that the others had taken time to get used to, proper meals made by the father-like side. When Patton had learned the state of the other’s kitchen he had been horrified, it was no wonder Janus and Remus were so thin. He was working on getting them to a healthier size, they were getting there but were still too thin.
Patton smiled as he headed back to the living room after almost an hour to let the two on the couch know that breakfast was ready. He made them all pancakes, blueberry for Logan and himself, chocolate chip for the twins and plain for Virgil and Janus, he knew what his kiddos liked after all. “Heya kiddos! Breakfast is ready!” Patton said as he reached the couch.
“Thanks Pat, “ Virgil said as he stood up off the couch and stretched. He held out his hand to Janus, “C’mon Jan let’s get some breakfast.”
Janus hums and looks up at Virgil, “Ah yes, food.” He takes Virgil’s hand and lets himself get pulled into a standing position, then quickly releases his hand.
With a shout upstairs from Patton it was a few seconds until the other three sides made  their way downstairs. Roman and Remus were groggily arguing about something arbitrary, meanwhile Logan looks like he’s been awake for at least an hour.
Janus and Virgil had already taken their seats at the table when the others began sitting down, Logan on the left of Virgil on one side of the table, with Virgil in the middle, and Janus on the other side of the table in the furthest left seat, Remus seated to his right with an open spot for Roman next to him.
And then it happens. It was so innocent to them, all Patton had did was give Roman a nice snug hug. They honestly hadn’t known the snake side would react the way he did. They didn’t expect him to jump in his seat and stare wide-eyed at Patton hugging Roman and begin to tremble. And they certainly hadn’t expected his shaky voice and frantic rambling.
“W-why are you constricting him like that!? Are you fighting? Why are you fighting? He didn’t do anything wha-” Janus rambled frantically, looking like he was a second from prying Patton off Roman, eyes wide and breathing picking up.
“Constricting him- Fighting? Janus, he is merely giving Roman a hug. Why are you acting like you don’t know what that is?” Logan asked the trembling and panicking side.
“Janny, Jan hey,” Remus gently scooched the chair with Janus in it away from the table and turned it to face him fully. “Do you remember hugs? Remember how I’d hug you when you were really little?”
Janus shook his head no, blond curls bouncing. As he shook his head no Remus hummed in thought. Janus opened his mouth to speak again but Remus held a hand up to shush him.
“That’s what I thought baby blep, “ Remus sighed before he explained what a hug is. “Well ,a hug is just affection. You wrap your arms around them and give just a little squeeze. It’s not constricting and it’s not fighting.” Remus opened his arms in invitation. “It’s like how we used to cuddle but standing up or sitting, do you wanna try?”
Janus looked hesitant as he calmed down. “Will it hurt?” He watched Remus warily.
Remus gave the younger side a sad look, “No noodle it won’t hurt. It feels nice, and if you don’t like it just tell me and I’ll let go, okay?”
Janus hesitantly moved forwards and let Remus gently pull him into a hug. He tensed at the initial feeling of Remus’ arms around him, holding him, but calmed when he didn’t feel the grip tighten to constrict him. Warm, that's all Janus thought as he melted into Remus’ hold, it was like how they used to cuddle.
Remus sighed and gave the others a glare over Janus’ head. “Want to explain why you’ve never hugged him? I know why I hadn’t, I know why Virgil might not have, but why haven’t you?” He turned his glare to Patton, some ‘father-figure’ he was.
The others stood awkwardly looking guilty, even Virgil looked guilty, but Remus didn’t mind Virgil not explaining hugs to Janus. He knew he never had time as a dark side and any sign of weakness was dangerous so affection just wasn’t given in the open, hell it was rarely given behind closed doors. He had other reasons to be upset with Virgil.
“Affection is not something I generally give.” Logan said after clearing his throat and adjusted his glasses. “I never initiated a hug on the assumption he was like Virgil and did not care for them.”
Remus hummed at the answer and then turned to his twin. “Well Ro? Why haven’t you given Janus a hug?  In the month our rooms have been here why have you never given him a hug?” He held a steady, unnerving stare into Roman’s green eyes. However his stare was interrupted when Janus let out a small whine after a few minutes and he averted his eyes to the smallest side.
“What is it baby blep?” Remus asked softly, honestly shocking the others with how soft he was with Janus.
“Burnsss” Janus let out a small hiss and squirmed in Remus’ arms.
“Mkay, here I'll let go now okay?” Remus reassured as he let go of the smaller side. “That was overstimulation. You’re a bit touch-starved aren’t you?” Remus internally snorted at the words ‘touched-starved’.
Janus continued to just stare for a few moments before speaking up, “What isn't that?”
Logan perked up at the chance to explain something and gave a small hint of a smile when Remus motioned for him to tell Janus. “Touch starvation refers to the desire for physical contact that people may experience after receiving little to no physical interaction with others for a period of time. Some people may compare it to the desire for food during hunger.” Logan trailed off at the end.
A look of horror came across the faces of everyone but Remus and Janus. Had they really not gave Janus any physical contact other than the occasional brushing of hands, hands that were always gloved?
“But...what doesn’t overstimulation have to do with being touch-ssstarved?” Janus hissed quietly.
“Well little snake, when you’re touch-starved too much touch at once can cause overstimulation and can feel like you’re burning. We haven’t cuddled in…. a while...so, you’re touch-starved.” Remus calmly explained. He grimaced when various intrusive thoughts about burning flesh flashed through his mind.
“...ᵒʰ” Janus whispered. He fidgeted in his seat, growing increasingly uncomfortable with everyone looking at him and paying attention to him. “....ᵖᵃᵖᵃ ᶜᵃⁿ ᴵ ⁿᵒᵗ ᵍᵒ ᵗᵒ ᵐʸ ʳᵒᵒᵐ ⁿᵒʷ…” Janus whispered again to Remus, avoiding looking at the others.
Remus blinked back tears at being called Papa for the first time in years. He smiled at the small side in front of him and nodded. “Yea baby blep you can go to your room. Today has been a bit much, huh?” He said as he stood up, stepping away so Janus could leave to his room. He watched with unshed tears as Janus scrambled away.
Once Janus had left and everyone heard Janus’ door click shut they all turned to Remus with questions. “Did he call you Papa?”, “How long has he been touched-starved?”, “How can we help him?” Roman, Logan and Patton all spoke at once.
“One question at a time.” Remus stated, giving them all a cold stare when he turned back to them. “Ro, you first.” Remus gestured at Roman to talk.
“Why did he call you Papa?” Roman asked, genuinely very confused.
“ I raised him. He formed when I was 7, Virgil was 10.” Remus shrugged. He was surprised they didn’t figure that out. Virgil wasn’t exactly the most parental side but he guessed he wouldn’t be seen as one either.
“Wait what?!” All of them but Virgil shouted.
“Remus are you sure he’s that young? Deceit and denial are formed much younger than that,” Logan questioned.
Remus looked Logan directly in his eyes, making the glasses clad side fidget. “Are you stupid?”
Logan sputtered and Roman looked angry and ready to intervene when Logan spoke up, “Of course not! His primary function is Deceit and that would make him around my age! Ergo, just a year younger than you and Roman as one creativity!”
Remus raised a single brow, “Really? You genuinely believe that deception is Janus’ prime function? Have you ever listened to him? Do you remember him forming back then, before the split?”
“Of course I have! I-...oh” Logan stopped, a perplexed look crossing his face before and understanding look.
“Oh what?! His primary function is Deceit is it not?! That’s why he’s called Deceit!” Roman threw his hands up as he spoke.
“Deceit is just...part of him Princey, a big part but....his primary function is societal self-preservation. Like Patton said in Jan’s first episode. ‘Deceit is an inner couch that acts with the one intention of self-preservation’ his primary may...seem like deceit but it’s not” Virgil said reluctently.
“Well put Virgey!” Remus grinned unnaturally wide and then as soon as the grin appeared it dropped. “Janus formed when Thomas started to have the desire for things to be fair and when Thomas started forming his sense of self on his ability to perform. He formed when Thomas was ten years old.” Remus stated.
The others looked guilty. “So...he...he really does want the best for Thomas?” Patton questioned.
Remus groaned and threw his hands in the air. “Of course he fucking does! That’s all any of us want for Thomas! What? You thought that because he often speaks in lies and encourages certain lying he wants to ruin Thomas? He wants Thomas to throw everything down the drain? That he wants Thomas to lose his friends?! Are you fucking stupid!? You and Roman had a whole fucking 50 minute video on the topic WITH HIM! He literally said he’s looking out for Thomas’ mental wellbeing!! The whole wedding debacle in the courtroom was trying to get Thomas to be HONEST with himself!” Remus growled as he stomped around the table to Patton.
 “You all view things in black and white, well Padre , that’s not how life WORKS! That’s not how ANYTHING works! Nothing is in black and white! It’s shades of grey daddy-o!” Remus spat at Patton, a boney finger jabbing him in the center of his chest as he stared down at the ‘father-figure’.
“Like I fucking said in my song ‘good and bad is all made up nonsense’.” Remus huffed as he pulled away and crossed his arms. “Now if you excuse me I need to help a certain snake get used to touch again and not be overstimulated when I cuddle him to death.”
Virgil went to open his mouth but quickly snapped it shut when Remus threw him a glare.
“You ,Virgil, are the last person to visit him right now.” Remus snapped as he sank out and into Janus’ room, leaving the room cold and unsettled.
7. What made you pick your name?
quickly sweeps fandoms under the rug Haha, no reason! I just liked the names! Definitely no relation to Remy Sanders from the TS shorts or Janus Sanders!! At all! Nope! Nothing to see here!!!
9. What names have you considered using?
So many. I'm going to take this as "that you have not ended up actually using" since that's a different question. I know I've thought of Orion, Moon, Grey, Winter, October, Indigo, Hyacinth, River, and Ember. There's definitely more that I've at the very least thought about, but those are just some off the top of my head. I also had a huge list compilation of gender neutral names at one point on a google doc, but that unfortunately got deleted because it was on my old school's gmail account, and apparently they decided to delete my account since I no longer go there.
