@la-pheacienne This is the best political fight ever in Turkish media:
youtube
Basically in this TV program from the 90s three leftists of different kinds fight about the future of Turkish leftism and one of them accuses the other of having defended Abdülhamit II (who was an Ottoman Sultan who died 86 years before) and the other one goes berserk. They also accuse each other of being hippies. I wish this masterpiece had subtitles.

TO SAY YOU WERE SHOCKED was an understatement.
your boyfriend had made no indication that he was learning your home language, just like you made no indication that you were learning his.
“why didn’t you tell me you were learning it? I have to find out through twitter?” you asked, your voice filled with amusement as you sat across from charles.
“ok, for one, I wanted it to be a surprise so that I could communicate better with your family, and two, you didn’t tell me you were learning french.” he responded with a large smile on his face.
“alright let’s hear it, tell me a sentence.” you asked him, leaning back in your chair with a grin on your face as he let out a chuckle.
“sen benim hayatımın aşkısın ve seninle evlenmek için sabırsızlanıyorum.” charles said confidently, a smirk on his face as he looked at your reaction to his words. “you are the love of my life and I can’t wait to marry you.”
“baby, do you really mean that?” you asked, shocked at his statement and his perfect pronunciation. “tu veux vraiment t'épouser?” you asked shyly. “you really wanna marry me?”
“yes baby, of course. it’s why i am learning, so that i can communicate with you in a language you’re more comfortable with, and also so that I can talk to your family better.” he smiled, “and can I just say your french is very good.” he told you, taking your hand in his and kissing your knuckles.
“thank you my love, and your turkish is so good, you pronounced everything so well.” you told him happily.

"(...) and another thing, i've never seen lewis more relaxed than he was after the race on sunday; in the post-race press conference he had the floor to himself, just him on his own, answering questions about the season and what the title means to him; and his answers were heartfelt and illuminating. it was lewis, at his most articulate and endearing...but it was what happened immediately after the cameras stopped rolling that showed what a weight of his shoulders title number seven really is...he walked to the edge of the room and sat down, and even lay down at one point…and i think this must have been the first moment he had to himself since the end of the race and he was soaking it up; he was clearly emotionally drained but also really happy, you could really see the smile on his face. and as i walked out of the room, i said to him: "you alright!?" and he laughed and he wanted to chat, which is something that lewis, the racing driver, isn't usually very good at over a race weekend because he is too focused, too in the zone, too busy, but after clinching this title the wall came down ever so slightly...maybe just for a few minutes but i did see lewis, the man, and he is both interested and interesting, and very likeable. the wall might have gone back up by the time we get to bahrain because one of the things he said was that he still has three races to win this year...but i will always remember witnessing that moment of relaxed euphoria from the champ: turkey 2020."

The Turkish government asked Twitter to censor its political opponents right before an election, and Elon “free speech” Musk complied.
Make no mistake: Elon Musk will use Twitter to manipulate the US. elections in 2024.

if you're still not boycotting israeli products, protesting against the genocide, sharing the news, asking for a ceasefire, I am judging you. I know my followers, I know my mutuals. I know the ones who selectively interact with my anime shitposts and ignore the ones about palestine. I am seeing you and I am judging you. I won't call you out on your bullshit personally, because if you can still ignore this humanitarian crisis while being active online and seeing all those posts, you're just not worth trying to reason with. But know that if you still choose to be silent, if you still think this issue is too political or complicated you're an ignorant, pathetic little bitch. you can't live without your starbucks? grow the fuck up. you think celebrities don't owe anyone their support and it is okay for them to stay quiet when it's the brown, the muslim who suffers? you're fucking delusional and you're pathetic. you think you get to turn a blind eye because it's not effecting you? you're a self-centered whiney little toddler. stay in your bubble and keep quiet all you want, i know you will lie to your kids one day and tell them you stood with palestine.
none of us are free until all of us are. free palestine 🇵🇸

A lot of people here in Türkiye got recommended a Podcast channel's video about OnlyFans on YouTube..
I was surprised OF made it's relevancy all the way here but it shows the West's problems are everyone else's problems now. I can see why China wants to censor and separate their internet from the rest of us.

One last thing about racism and Nigar. Her looks aren’t really racialized in a Turkish context, Turkish people can look both “Asian” and “White”. To be fair people from East Asia are still racialized, for example this is how the Chinese princess in a show about Ancient Turks is depicted while Ancient Turks themselves are (quite unrealistically) portrayed by European or Middle Eastern-looking actors:
Tumblr media
But a more Eurasian-looking character like Nigar wouldn’t be racialized, since that is typical for Turkish people, indeed the actress is an ethnic Turk. Her almond-shaped eyes are often mentioned in appraisal of the character on Turkish social media but always as a sign of beauty, not as a racist insult like in this gross comment by a Russian fan of the show:
Tumblr media
And the show actually points attention to her eyes when Ibo praises them which I prefer to read positively.
That being said, completely accidentally (because it isn’t a Thing in Turkish media, when East Asian women are depicted in Turkish historical dramas like old Tarkan films or the above-mentioned drama about Ancient Turks or even in passages in history textbooks about “Chinese princesses”, they tend to conform to the “Dragon Lady” stereotype) Nigar fits the Lotus Blossom stereotype almost to a T in her relationship with Ibrahim:
youtube
Again it is completely accidental since these two people (Ibo and Nigar) aren’t racialized in a Turkish context, but I still couldn’t resist to quote Madame Butterfly in “An Insignificant Death”. It doesn’t necessarily mean anything racial, after all Fatal Attraction heavily alludes to Madame Butterfly and Glenn Close does not look Asian lol. It can be referred to in any story about a woman disposable to a man. But anyway I find it interesting.

I think the massive rise in Korean and Turkish dramas following in the last couple of years has to do with the fact that they treat romance without the annoying sort of dismissive "self-awareness" that American romcoms have displayed in the past years. Like the earnest feeling of the scripts, the acting and the dialogue feels like it respects the audience, which we know is mostly female. Idk it feels sublime to watch a "women's" genre get treated with as much respect and artistry as any other.

HAREMDE DÖRT KADIN (1965) dir. Halit Refiğ Sadik is an ignorant, heir-less, self-indulgent yet religious Ottoman Pasha who lives in a luxurious mansion with his three wives. Mihrengiz, one of the women in his harem, grows attached to the Pasha's nephew, Dr. Cemal. Gülfem, often left in the background, is trying to conceive a child with the help of Rüştü, the Pasha's military-driven nephew, in order to increase her importance in the mansion. Şevkidil (the main wife) is a strong, scheming woman who is capable of managing the mansion and its people on her own, and who is in love with Mihrengiz. Things grow exponentially more complicated once the Pasha announces his wish to take the young and innocent Rusan as his fourth wife. (link in title)
