1. when/how did you discover them? + what was the first song you listened to?

i consider my 'official' discovery of twenty one pilots in january 2019 when the chlorine mv dropped and randomly got on my youtube homepage and blew my mind

though before that i had already heard stressed out/ride/heathens, i think the very first song i heard from them was ride

2. have you been on concert(s)?

sadly no... my dream is to go one of those small venue shows like they did during takeover tour

3. do you remember where you were when trench dropped (if you were a fan by then)?

i wasn't a yet fan back then but what i would give to be in the trench rollout dmaorg updates yellow everywhere era!!

4. favourite thing about the clique?

how we weren't just drawn to the music but the message behind it—and everyone on here is so nice i love y'all and also we have the best artists (drawing/writing/making music)

5. any memorable/funny/interesting quote (from interviews/bts footage/…) you especially like?

i learned the word plausible from the boys, also shoutout to will smith for being such a great friend and providing them places to shoot music videos in

6. what would you want to ask/tell them if you got the chance?

i would like to tell them they're not alone in their struggles either, they're always helping us with their music but it'd be nice that they were the ones being supported for once, i would ask tyler what were the nicher inspirations for the dema/trench world, i'd thank josh dun for overcoming his fear of public speaking because i'm the same look up to him so much

i love them all but if i had to choose, self titled. because it started as just a sketch drawn by a friend of the band, and nobody had expected it to mean so much to people years later. so i really love that authenticity and that how by looking at it you feel connected to tyler in 2009

around a month ago i found a random personalised mug at my school left by a past student and the drawings on the mug were a reference to neon gravestones... that moment of connection with someone in the same place but different times really moved and if i never discovered this band i would've never had this experience <3 (i made a post abt it here)

That's a good one. I had this intense feeling of being irrelevant. I didn't really have anything that I cared about and not really any friends. I wanted to make a new social media account so I could maybe have more followers and a community and people to talk to. The relationship with my ex was also not going good anymore. Yes I shaved my legs on Saturday. But that was the first time in like 3 months.

BTS is on their world tour, and the reader has just released a new song. However Jimin seems to be the only one to remember. So when the reader decided to surprise everyone by singing it on stage they’re in for one hell of a surprise.

This was our biggest tour to date. We worked on this for a year along with the album, new coreo, new music videos and more. And somehow I had just released a new single. Of course with the interviews, talk shows and trying to remember the new coreo the rest of the boys had forgotten that I had a new song coming out. Everyone except for Jimin though, he barged into my room on the release day with a bouquet of my favourite flowers and grabbed my hand to take me out for dinner to celebrate while the rest of the boys were at practice.

“Hello everybody!” Namjoon yelled into the mic, getting a roar in response, “We are BTS!” 

The sound of the crowd was defining. And kept getting louder as the cameras panned from one member to another.

As Namjoon started to go on with the usual speech of thanking everybody and introducing the members to people who may have been dragged here, I quietly snuck off stage to do a quick change.

 “And last but not least, our youngest member”, “Y/N!” The boys said in unison as they gestured to where I stood a few moments ago. “Where did they go?” Jungkook asked as he walked over to where I stood and waved his hand around before continuing, “I think they disappeared.” earning a laugh and some screams from the crowd.

“They probably just went backstage to get changed before the rest of us. Always has to be first that kid.” Yoongi said as the rest of the members still searched around for me, Hoseok even laying on the edge of the stage and looking into the crowds, earning some yells and a few hands reaching out to try and grab at him.

“Y/n?” Jin yelled as he wandered around the stage holding Tae’ hand.

“Yn?” Yelled Jimin as he peaked around the curtains backstage, only to see me climbing under the stage and taking a seat at the white piano the Yoongi had used a few songs ago. Putting a hand over his mic he took another few steps into the wings, “y/n? What are you doing?” he asked as he popped his head down into the little cubby I had crawled through. Seeing his eyes light up he said, “you’re performing Screen aren’t you! I can’t wait for the others to hear it. They'll be so shocked that you performed it live!” Placing his mic down beside him and signaling for the tech crew to turn it off he slipped into the cubby next to me, “I’m so proud of you. You know that right?” He wondered as he grabbed my hand, “yeah, I know. I’m just worried, what if ARMY doesn’t sing along and I just freeze up, or what if I forget the lyrics and I mess up the whole concert, we've worked so hard to be here Jimin, or-or what if the others don’t like it” sighing I looked up at him and whispered, “I’m scared Minnie.” as I stared down at the keys in front of me,

“Hey hey hey, look at me.” Jimin said as he grabbed my face softly, careful not to mess up my makeup, “You’re going to be amazing. I promise. And if you don’t think so, then you’re wrong, because we’ll all be at side stage, cheering you on louder than all the ARMYs in the world. Got it?” Staring straight into his eyes, “Got it Minnie.”

“We’re going to go look for y/n backstage, we’ll be back in a few minutes ARMY!” I heard Tae yell as Jimin gave me a kiss on the head and pulled himself out of the platform under the stage. Looking back and giving me one last nod Jimin disappeared to go rejoin the rest of the band. Seeing the light through the gaps in the stage platforms go light blue and white I felt the piano start to rise up. The sound of ARMY became defining as I finally came up along with the piano. Lifting my finger to my lips I gave a quiet hush before adjusting the mic and letting my fingers ghost over the ivory keys.

(Start song) 

Pressing softly on the key I let the first note ring out into the silenced stadium. A few seconds later continuing to play softly. Hearing the backtrack come in I heard my earpiece turn on as voices rung out, “what are they playing?” Tae, along with a few other murmurs of confusion over me being alone on stage,

“Incase you guys forgot, which it seems you did. Y/n’ new single came out a few days into the new tour.” Jimin said in a motherly tone as I heard a few curse words thrown out from the other members as they finally realized why I was up there.

“I do not know why I would go, in front of you, and hide my soul. ‘Cause you're the only one who knows it, yeah you’re the only one who knows it.”

Looking up from the keys that I had been so focused on, and up into the wings I saw the boys standing there looking at me. Some with sad looks in their eyes upset that they had forgotten, but mostly in amazement over the fact that over the past year as I had been writing this and asking them for their opinion they had completely brushed me off, as though I wasn’t as important as other things in their life. Jimin however, he looked like a proud mama, grooving along to the song and mumbling the lyrics quietly to himself as he watched me slowly get into it more and become more confident in myself.

“And I will hide, behind my pride, don’t know why I think I can lie, ‘Cause there’s a screen on my chest, yeah there’s a screen on my chest.” 

Letting myself get into the song I started to bang my head to the song as the chorus kicked in, and I heard ARMY sing along with me, 

“I’m standing in front of you, I’m standing in front of you, I’m trying to be so cool, everything together trying to be so cool. I’m standing in front of you,  oh I’m standing in front of you, I’m trying to be so cool, everything together trying to be so cool. ” 

Playing the last few notes on the piano myself I let the backtrack take over, grabbing the mic from the stand and standing up I started the rap/semi-slam poetry part, “I can’t see past my own nose, I’m seeing everything in slow-mo, Look out below crashing down just like a vertical loco-motive. That’s a train, am I painting the picture that’s in my brain? A train from the sky, locomotive my motives are insane!”

Starting to walk slowly up the stage until I got the the smaller stage further into the crowd where I was surrounded by voices, singing along with me, “My flows not great, okay, I conversate with people who know if I flow on a song I’ll get no radio play. While you’re doing fine, there’s some people and I” taking the mic away from my mouth I crumbled in on myself slightly kneeling on one leg, as I screamed into the stadium, “Who have a really tough time getting through this life, so excuse us while we sing to the sky!”

Waving my one arm back and forth as i held the mic up with my other I watched as the ARMY bombs around the stadium lit up blue and white in time with the swaying the the crowd, “I’m standing in front of you, I’m standing in front of you, I’m trying to be so cool, everything together trying to be so cool.” Pulling the mic away from me I continued to wave my one arm and the other hung to my side, I watched in awe at the people singing back to me, singing back my song, “I’m standing in front of you, oh, I’m standing in front of you, I’m trying to be so cool, everything together trying to be so cool.” 

Tossing my mic down to the rodie below I started to yell the lyrics, “oh, oh, oh, we’re broken, we’re broken, we’re broken, we’re broken people, we’re broken people, yeah.” crouching down and turning to face the giant screens I saw the photos I had asked for start to show up. 

They were photos of all of us. Me and my boys. The day we first met each other, Jungkook and I making faces at the camera during one of our first practices, our first debut solo concert (where barely anyone showed up), Yoongi and I asleep during a horror movie that we we’re supposed to be watching, our first american award show, Taehyung and I out shopping in front of the Eiffel Tower, out first live talk show, Namjoon and I sitting quietly cuddled up next to each other as we read, and even some photos of the eight of us together a few days ago we were laughing so hard all leaning on each other with tears running down our faces over something that Hoseok had said to us during our dinner out. All the while the crowd behind me chanted out, “We’re broken, we’re broken, we’re broken, we’re broken people oh, we’re broken people, oh yeah.” A photo of Jin and I during our first time on a plane as it lands gripping each others hands so tightly our knuckles turned white, and Jimin and I during our dance practice today, him giving me a piggyback and him laughing as I tucked my head into his neck scared that he was going to drop me. Finally a younger version of the eight of us hugging each other after seeing one of our music videos hit 1 million likes for the first time.

Spinning around and standing all in one fluid motion I turned back to the crowd knowing that the big finish was about to happen I started to get choked up. “We’re broken, we’re broken, we’re broken, we’re broken people oh, we’re broken people oh yeah.” I felt tears start to swell up in my eyes as I continued to sing, hearing my voice crack once as I started to remember all that we’ve been through, and how we’re still here, making music, and that even if it may take a while you won't be broken forever, “I’m standing in front of you, I’m standing in front of you, I’m trying to be so cool, everything together trying to be so cool.”

“I’m standing in front of you, I’m standing in front of you, oh I’m trying to be so cool, everything together trying to be so cool!” I finished as I saw the confetti cannons go off around me as blue and white confetti goes out into the air being carried by the wind all around the stadium, being light up by the ARMY bombs waving frantically in the air.

“Whoomph” I let out a hard breath as I felt someone's arms come wrapping around my midsection, followed by six more pairs of arms come to hug me. Feeling someone pick me up and spin me around they planted a kiss on my head, “YOU DID AMAZING Y/N!!” Jimin yelled as he softly grabbed my face to look at me directly in my eyes, “I told you, you would be fine.” He said softly as he let go only for the other members to hug me again and start clapping, that along with the cheers of ARMY it was almost deffining.

After the rest of the concert was over,  we had all decided to go get something to eat.

“Hey y/n come here for a second.” Tae said quietly as we both fell back from the group, continuing to walk but at our own pace. “Why didn’t you tell us about your single. We had no idea.” He asked softly.

Avoiding his eyes I started, “well, I did try to tell you guys, and I even came to you during the writing process but you all just brushed me off. Except for Jimin, none of you even knew that I released it, you were all completely oblivious to what I was doing. Even on the release date when Jimin said that we were going out for dinner to celebrate my new song you all just brushed him off saying that you had more important things to deal with and-” my rambling got stopped short by Tae hugging me. We were silent for a few moments, just standing there hugging each other and letting silent tears fall down our faces, before he whispered a soft, “I’m sorry. We didn’t mean to push you off like that.”

“It’s okay Tae. It’s not your fault, sometimes people just forget things.” 

“But we should never have forgotten you and I’m so sorry about that, we all are.” Tae said gesturing to the rest of the group now standing in front of us.

A few small “we’re sorry y/n.” and “I’m sorry about that”s floated around before Jimin finally broke the tension by saying, “Well I’m not sorry at all, I was supportive the whole way through and I didn’t forget once!” Earning laughs and giggles from the rest of us.

Taking a look around at my friends, I wiped my eyes and cheeks, then grabbed Tae’ hand before saying, “well what are we just standing around here for! I just performed a new song and I’m starving!”

so something seems to be going on again with twenty one pilots, everyone’s speculating about what it means, and while i am in principle of course ready for the new album i wanna say... this whole scavenger hunt mystery business... is not what i‘m here for. if you enjoy it, good for you, but to me it is stressful and anxiety inducing. it gives me serious fear of missing out if i don’t bother to try and keep up with it (which is hard given that a) these things always seem to happen at US daytimes so when i am asleep and b) i am not doing good mentally at the moment due to the current state of things in the world). twenty one pilots used to be a safe haven for troubled kids and as a depressed college student myself i just wish for them to give me a new album to cheer me up and give me some hope back, and tell me when exactly i can buy concert tickets maybe. i‘m not up for being played mind games with by my favourite band :(

If I had the energy to fully wrench my life in a completely different direction I would like to become a professional scuba diver and study the ocean. I already am a scuba diver, but it’s a hobby and not something I’m able to do very often at all.

1. Its your birthday! What did you ask for and did you receive it?

I haven't asked for birthday presents for a while now but usually I just talk to my parents about something and they have the power to remember it for a long time and then make me stunned on my b-day. Last year I got a ticket to see Hamilton in London as my birthday present and I told them I'd love to see it maybe once? It was an unforgettable experience as well✨

2. What was the last song or album you listened to?

For the album I'm pretty sure I listened to All About Luv by Monsta X (since I love love love it). And yesterday I was also listening to some kpop groups that I haven't heard much from before to see if I like any. And so far I'm really in love with Zombie by Day6 and Summer Breeze by SF9.

3. What is your go to snack when you’re hungry or bored?

Anything that contains chocolate~ which is a bad idea most of the time bc I can get a really bad stomachache if I eat too much. Never stopped me tho. And if I'm not in the mood for chocolate, maybe some dried fruit or cornflakes, or chips.

4. What is your morning routine?

Eeee *laughs nervously* I wake up late, spend another hour in bed, get up when my mom tells me the food is ready, eat and spend some time with her probably browsing through social media as well or playing Pokemon go, then we go on a walk around the lake nearby, and after we return, I go to my room to watch something/play the sims/listen to music/etc. I usually also write a small part of the story I've started recently, so I'm trying to make a habit out of writing.

5. What mythical/cryptid creature would you be?

Ohhhh there's so many good ones. This will probably sound lame but I think I'd go with a mermaid or a hippocamp because I'd love to be able to explore the ocean as one of its habitants for the rest of my life. I have always felt a connection with water and there's that something that always scared me and intrigued me about it.

6. How do you interact with someone that you don’t like?

Avoid them at all costs. Don't interact or if you have to, do the very least and go. I mean, obviously it depends on what they did for me to dislike them and if I absolutely have to interact with them, I'd probably try to be nice. But generally: a v o i d.

7. How do you define a toxic person?

Someone who slowly makes you feel worse and worse about yourself and better about them. I'm an introvert so any human interaction is exhausting for me, but my friends give me so much good energy and I feel tired but satisfied. Meanwhile with a toxic person you'd feel absolutely exhausted and with no energy to go on. You'd find excuses for that, you'd try to defend the very person who hurts you, hurting yourself more in the process. If you do something wrong, you're the only one to blame, but if they hurt you, it's nothing. It's not a relationship of equals, a toxic person thrives on the other one being miserable.

8. Have you ever been to a concert or fanmeet type event?

I have! But not to a lot and not any that I would really like to go. I've never taken part in a concert/fanmeet that I'd wanted to go for a very long time, I think. But I have a few ideas about what groups I'd love to see live (Seventeen, Blackpink, 5sos, twenty one pilots)

9. Do you believe in astrology? Why or why not?

Do I? My friend is interested in astrology so he often tells me about it and I find it genuinely interesting. I'm sceptical a bit and probably not as into it as he is, but I can think of it as something fun to know about. There are probably some parts of it that I genuinely believe in tho.

10. If you only had one sense (hearing, sight, touch… ect.) which one would you want?

Oh noooooo, this one's hard. There are too many beautiful and amazing things to experience with all of the senses so I'm not sure which one to go with. Probably,,, hearing tho. I could do without smell, sight and taste would be hard to lose, but I'd manage and touch, well... If I could still hug people even without feeling it, I'm good. So hearing! Probably, bc I love music and listening to some of the tunes feels like entering different worlds to me. I could still listen to podcasts and audiobooks, too, so I'm all good.

11. Who is your favorite celebrity or idol?

Ummm, do I have one? I have a lot of people that inspire me, but I wouldn't call them celebrities for the most part. I'm just gonna say Saint Suppapong, since I love the boy and he's an idol, and I'm proud of him💖

12. If you could talk to Your favorite celebrity for a limited time, what would you tell them?

Oh lord. I'd have a heart attack, first. Then, I'd just have sort of a friendly chat. Tell him, I support him, I am proud of him and I look forward too see more of his work in the future. Something uplifting to make sure he feels appreciated. Maybe I'd present something handmade for him so he could remember that, too.

13. I’m taking you out on a date and its your choice. Where are we going, and what are we doing?

A picnic! I'm dying to go on a picnic for a date. But generally anywhere is fine, as long as we can spend time together. A zoo, an oceanarium, a planetarium, a museum, a cinema, a cafe, a dinner, a walk in a park, doesn't matter. I just want to spend time with you and probably have you close💗

14. Do you like sweet or savory foods?

Both ofc but I lean more towards sweet~

15. Do you have any band merch or anything from your favorite artist? If so what?

I don't have a lot of merch in general so no, I don't think so. But I'd love to buy some of my favourite kpop albums, the only thing is which ones 😭😭

It's funny how the music I listen to evolved.

When I was about 10 years old, I got my first mp3-player. It was quite old and often broken. The music that I could listen to, sounded bad because of rustlea and it got cut off often. I didn't care though, I was happy that my dad gave it to me (even though my mum was against it, but that's another story). I listened a lot with it. Mostly songs of a Flemish music program for kids. So only national music then.

A little time after that my parents found out that my mp3-player was of really bad quality, but I didn't want them to buy a phone, because I was happy, idk I was a strange kid. I was happy that I had some rusty music and I didn't need more I guess. It was around that time that I saw "The Lazy Song" from Bruno Mars on TV and I asked my dad to add the song on my player. He added the whole album and for a few months I only listened to that. It was one of my first encounters of the English language. Yay.

On my twelfth birthday, at the end of 6th grade, I got my first phone. It was a very cool one, 'cause it had a touchscreen and a yellow case. I always loved yellow. Still my favourite colour and yes I am a proud hufflepuff. Deal with that. Anyways, this phone gave me a new possibility, bacause now, I was able to search and download my own music. So I discovered some more music. Mainstreet (a Dutch band), MBAND (a Russian band), some single songs and music from movies and musicals. I really began listening to international music, and as I said before, it helped me evolve my english. That, and also Harry Potter (the first movies me and my sister watched with english audio and Dutch subtitles. Now we watch every series and movie with english subs and english audio. Yay).

Around 9th grade my phone broke. The buttons for sounds and the on/off button didn't work anymore. Well I got another one. With almost unlimited music download possibility. New music wave. Serguei Lazarev, Alexander Rybak, Kpop (yeah your heard that right my dear emo friends, and i can still read the Korean alphabet).

Actually Kpop gave me some good things. So I'm happy that I went through that phase. It was the final thing to make me a non-rascism person (i am ashamed of the fact that i was, indeed, rascist. I'm not anymore though. Thank God for that). Also, I got my taste of fashion there.

Then. The emo begins. It actually doesn't begin good. It has a story too. There was this girl, a friend of mine. Let's call her A. Well she had her own problems, not gonna get into that. She listened a lot to punk/hard-rock kinda things, didn't know back then. I always judged her for that (fuck past-self me). That's not important. She had a friend (let's call him S). She was in love with him, he wasn't with her. He was also a friend of my sister's. He was a huge fan of Twenty One Pilots. Anyways, this friend S told my sister about A's problems, and my sister told me. So I knew A's problems and I knew that S told my sister, even though he was supposed to keep it secret. I did the stupidest thing by telling a good friend of mine (let's call her E) about it. I asked E not to tell A, because it would only make things worse. She told A. Still mad at her for that. Everyone found out, it was a huge mess, I hurt myself, started crying and hating myself (hasn't stopped), etc. I knew I needed help. And then I remembered about that guy S, who was a fan of tøp. I started listening to it. I fucking loved it. With whole my heart. The whole summer of '18 was a tøp-summer. It was also with the start of Trench. I was really happy. I still am. I wonder what I would be if I hadn't decided to listen to them. Fucked up probably. I still am, but I try to become better. Anyways. I went to their concert in March too. Magical night. Tøp teached me to think about what you feel.

Through Twenty One Pilots memes and all I heard a lot about the other bands of the emo quartet. A lot of a certain "Gerard Way" too. Also "Frank Iero". Well I posted a post on my tøp blog (if anyone's interested it's @trenchil ). I got to know this perfect girl @fangirling-account . She told me everything about mcr. Everything. (And I can't thank you enough for it, dear) I love mcr. I love them so much, but I guess you know that, based on my little blog here. Mcr teached me to accept myself and not trying to be someone I'm not.

I plan on getting into other bands too. Green Day, p!atd, fob, ya know.

Also, when I get into something, I mean getting slurped up in the tornado of songs, inside jokes, memes and feelings. The whole damn package. Sometimes it hurts, but I love doing it. It's called obsessing and I love it.

The thing I enjoy about music nowadays too, i the fandom. You get to share your experience with the world, there are other people who get you, there are people you can have a discussion with. People who have the same interests of hands (looking at you @areebbbb).

Anyways music kinda saved me.

Eh! I went for cocktails with my uni friends the day or so before I left and I got a little rubber duck in the cocktail and we all had a really lovely time. I paid for everyones drinks so that people weren’t worried about spending money and it was just a really really happy night uwu

Okay, so i’ve been dying my hair since I was like 13 but uhh my hair is now died black and styled in a long asymmetrical bob with an undercut. I’m really digging the style, but I might consider going a lighter colour again soon.

Never gotten high, but i’m usually just a really flirty drunk. So maybe some fluttered eyelashes at other people but nothing more than that .

1. What takes too much of your time?

Work. I live too far from it so it takes around 2 hours to get there and almost 3 hours to get back home.

2. What makes your day better?

Watching movies, writing, eating chocolate.

3. What’s the best thing that happened to you today?

I kinda dyed half of my hair grey. And I ate Japanese food.

4. What fictional place would you like to go to?

I never got over the fact that Genovia isn’t a real place so I would just go there if I could.

5. Are you good at giving advice?

People tend to come to me for advice so I guess I am?

6. Do you have any mental illness?

Depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, panic disorder... the whole package

8. What musician inspired you the most?

Jackson Wang. But also Yoongi and Namjoon, from BTS (duh).

They inspire me in different ways, but mostly because of how hard they work, how they don’t give up on the things they want to do, and for Jackson, how he isn’t afraid to show his feelings... They also remind me that men can be good.

9. Have you ever fallen in love?

Yep. I do not recommend it.

10. What’s your dream date?

I guess the dream is to be asked on a date. Just take me someplace where we can have a nice conversation and maybe eat something nice.

That I don’t talk much. I am constantly teased for it. Also, people always tell me they were scared to talk to me at first because I look too serious. It’s not my fault that I have a resting bitch face (I actually have been trying to smile more and I just look goofy). I’m also very shy and an introvert so that doesn't help.

I eat my depression and anxiety away. So I’m constantly putting junk food inside my body and now it got to the point that is making me sick, so i’m trying to change that.

It’s kind of a mix?? Like I leave my clothes folded on top of the drawers rather than putting them away bc the drawers stick and it’s just easier access. The messiest thing about my room is that I’m a human magpie who likes collecting shiny/interesting things so I have a lot of stones and bits of metal or ceramic and some nuts and bolts lying around pffft. XD But mostly I keep things kinda tidy.

For myself, personally? Lots when I was a baby bc I had chronic ear infections and would literally just scream 24/7 and never sleep, I was in so much pain (poor tiny Matt. :(((( ) Once because I had a really bad migraine around age 13 that literally would not go away and had me throwing up every other minute and in such bad pain I wanted to literally die. And once recently when I felt super sick for months and months and finally went only to find there was nothing wrong with me?? turned out it was my gluten intolerance but dear god I had never felt that sick.

Just my asthma preventer (and I forget to take that a lot and end up not being able to breathe as well as I should, bc I’m the World’s Biggest Dumbass :)) XD )

“jumpsuit” & “nico and the niners” by twenty one pilots

emo alternative hip-hop rap-rock electropop superstars twenty one pilots dropped two songs a few days ago from their upcoming album “trench” to come out later this year; here’s my take on the two very different but very awesome singles.

a note before i start: i have researched a good deal about the meaning of this song by making mental links to the journal entries twenty one pilots have been posting on a cryptic website and by reading up on genius lyrics annotations as well as a decent variety of clique theories. if you haven’t really done this, some of my review may be a little confusing. 

i’ll start right off by saying this; i’ve had both songs on loop for several hours already throughout these past few days and i have to say that i’m pretty impressed. i think that both of these songs are extremely creative, well written, and well produced, and although each, to me, has a very different energy, i love that many aspects of the “blurryface” era were both kept and switched up. overall, i love both songs a lot, yet i do have a couple of nitpicky issues that i’ll address as best as i can in this review. 

let’s begin with “jumpsuit” which is the first of the two. the first thing i have to say is that i am absolutely in love with the baseline, and when those synths and more powerful drums kick in, it feels very much like a mashup of a “vessel” song and a “blurryface” song, which i am absolutely here for. tyler’s vocals sound excellent on the first chorus, though personally i would have perhaps toned down the effect on his voice a little bit. i also really enjoy the simple verse, especially the way he says “friend or foe?”. another highlight of this song is definitely the bridge -- here’s a place where the vocal effect totally works for me and actually enhances the song rather than taking away from it. the piano here is also beautiful. and of course, there’s tyler’s signature screaming and that extra heavy breakdown, which is my personal favourite part of the song in terms of sound.

lyrically, i find the bridge to be the most interesting. some clique theories are saying that based off the music video, these lyrics represent tyler expressing his intentions to blurryface, which are that yes, he will likely be afraid and desperate and sad and hopeless again, but he will not succumb to these things (ergo, to blurryface) without fighting tooth and nail for his sanity and happiness, an intention which he further crystallizes with the powerul screaming of the common line “jumpsuit, jumpsuit, cover me”. i think this is a brilliant message to send and a very clever way to link the blurryface era and the “trench” era. to me, the yellow jumpsuit represents hope and perseverance in the search for happiness (or in the alternate metaphorical world that tyler and josh present to us, the escape from the fictional city of dema, which i think represents depression). i do find the repetition of that one line a bit irritating after many listens, but not enough for me to dislike the song or anything. i just wish tyler had maybe taken a variation on that particular line at certain points in the song, that’s all. overall though, a very solid track in all aspects.

now onto “nico and the niners” which is my personal favourite of the two. the moment i heard the ukulele in the beginning, it made me incredibly happy. my constant fear is that artists will omit or at least gloss over with too much production some of their signature instruments or sounds in their further work (for example, i always fear that further fall out boy work will lack catchy but intricate guitar riffs (and unfortunately that fear became a reality with the release of “m a n i a”)), so i was glad not to see the disppearance of the ukulele which was so well-used, especially in the blurryface era. the hip/hop reggae mixed hook is absolutely incredible, encompassing a lot of meaning and solid sound in only a few short lines. the bass and vocals also really contribute to that reggae vibe when tyler sings the line “my jumpsuit takes me so high” (among others), while the percussion is what makes me think of hip/hop. i really like those very subtle notes in the background of the second hook, although i still can’t tell if they’re guitar or keyboard. the quick rap part is a highlight of this song as well -- it sounds awesome and it’s incredibly meaningful as well. sound wise, there really isn’t a thing i dislike about this particular song.

in terms of lyrics, i find this track to be stronger than jumpsuit, partly because it has a good bit less of repetition, but also because of the meaning behind the lyrics. the hook is extremely catchy, i love that “east is up” kicks off those first three lines; it really grabs my attention and gets me to listen closely to what he’s going to say next -- sidenote: this is a prime example of repetition being used accordingly and very well. according once again to the clique and to genius lyrics annotations, nico is rumoured to be the name of one of the nine bishops that rule over dema, each bishop representing an insecurity, fear, etc. that holds tyler back from getting out of his depression (aka escaping from dema). what i then interpret is that tyler explains that “dema don’t control us” and that even when the “bishops come together” (when tyler’s struggles rise and become greater and perhaps cumulative), he understands that he can still control his own mind and make his own path away from depression. this part really made me think of the lyrics from “holding onto you” in which tyler describes tying a leash around his mind in order to gain control over it. the entire song is pure lyrical genius to me, especially the quick rapping part, where tyler says that the escape from dema will be “funded” by all the money that razorblade stores have made, and that they have so much that they could “start a concert, a complete diversion” to help them get out. these lines could mean so many different things, both together and on their own. what i get from them is that there’s this vicious cycle of self-harm/suicide, getting clean/bringing awareness to it or mourning the person, and then falling back into it all over again/forgetting about it. this cycle happens so often that if we were to turn around and crush these things by actually using or channelling that strength, time, resolve, etc. that is being taken away from us by depression into working for our escape instead, we’d be able to buy a racehorse, fund a concert, etc., all very expensive things, so basically we’d find the means to get out, and not just be “not depressed” but actually be happy because of this surplus of lost potential that we have. for me it really refers to the ability we have as people to take control of our lives, purely because we are able to be so down and sad and lost; why shouldn’t we have that very same ability to be so high and happy and grounded in our lives and in who we are, seeing as we can be such polarized beings (see what i did there)? instead, however, we fall back into our old habits. basically, i see these lines as a discussion about all of our wasted/buried potential even as depressed humans, which in itself is either sad or hopeful. i could be dead wrong on this interpretation, but either way, overall, these lyrics are extremely deep and incredibly clever.

now, i did say i say i had a couple of nitpicky criticisms. i mentioned one above which was a little sound thing in “jumpsuit” -- my only other criticism relates to both songs, and it is that both of these tracks, though especially “nico and the niners”, have direct references to the entire fictional universe of dema, clancy, the bishops, etc.. since i consider myself a pretty devoted member of the clique, i’ll go out and research all this stuff because i enjoy it so much. however, for someone who enjoys twenty one pilots but is not that invested in them or in music in general, these songs, at times, make little sense. i think anyone could catch onto the fact that the jumpsuit is this idea of shielding yourself from your struggles, of striving towards recovery, but in “nico and the niners”, tyler talks about dema, the bishops, the banditos, etc. and i don’t think that these references are obvious enough for a more casual fan to really catch onto. that is not to say that these are bad lyrics; far from it -- i just mean that i don’t think that they can really be appreciated by those who are not crazily dedicated to this band or to music, and may be written off as meaningless shit that just sort of sounded good, so tyler and josh made it into a song. we had a few direct mentions of blurryface in the past album, in both “stressed out” and “goner” yet blurry was always a slightly more abstract concept than what we’re seeing with dema and the whole rest of the “trench” stuff, making it so that if a casual fan listened to the entire blurryface album, they’d probably be able to understand some sort of progression or evolution in going from “my name’s blurryface and i care what you think” in “stressed out” to “i got two faces, blurry’s the one i’m not” in “goner” even without totally knowing what blurryface himself represents. if you want to argue and say “who cares, this is for the clique anyway” i’ll just stop you right there because i honestly disagree. it’s totally okay for tyler to make all of these direct references to this beautiful and brilliant concept that he’s creating, but i don’t think that a song should require hours (okay, exaggeration, i know) of online reading for just an average fan to even understand. i think that a song should be mostly able to stand alone, without the concept of the album doing most of the work in holding it up as a quality piece of work. i’m not for albums that are all over the place or singles that just don’t fit either, don’t get me wrong; i just mean that i want the song to be cohesive so that it doesn’t rely fully on something that not everyone will research. of course it can (and should, at least in terms of concept albums) refer back to that common storyline or at least theme, but not so much that it’s literally meaningless wihout it. excellent concept albums have been released in which every song can stand alone but also link right back to the common storyline; i mean, look at every single album by my chemical romance (“danger days: the true lives of the fabulous killjoys” does walk that line a little closer than the rest with tracks like “destroya” and in some moments “na na na”, but not nearly as heavily as these two twenty pilots tracks do). for me, “jumpsuit” passes the standalone test with only a bit of difficulty, but “nico and the niners” walks that line quite precariously, leaning a bit towards the side that says that it just doesn’t quite work if you don’t understand the bigger picture.

all this to say though, that is honestly my only criticism of these songs, and since it doesn’t really apply to me as i’m a pretty dedicated fan and proud member of the clique, here are some pretty high ratings for these two tracks:

my final rating for “jumpsuit” is an 8.0/10.

my final rating for “nico and the niners” is an 8.5/10.

Lately it’s been Twenty One Pilots. It’s fun to match the rhythms and raps and their songs help me get through a wide range of emotions.

Tiger lilies, dwarf Japanese maple/weeping willow trees, succulents.

Green, red and purple (and black, if you count that!)

Lately it’s been Attack on Titan characters. Usually it’s Jean. A lot of the time it has to do with RPs I’m in/have done.

- how do you take your coffee/tea? If you don’t like those what’s your fav warm drink?

I put sugar in both my tea and coffee. Usually what would be considered a 2 cubes, probably. For coffee, I also add creamer and, instead of creamer, I’ll add honey to tea. Bonus: My fave warm drink that isn’t either of these is hot cider.

I love fall scents! Maple, caramel, campfire... ones that aren’t too artificial but have a nice rich throw.

I love taking baths. They really help me relax and tune out the world. Music also helps with this, as well as candles. They all sound like the stereotypical go-tos, but they really do help me out.

Autumn! I love the smell of the rain and the colors of the leaves. The crisp wind, but occasionally still warm day. The bonfires and watching horror movie marathons on TV before Halloween... all of it. It’s also when my birthday is!

*cries* all of them...? I’ve been single for so long, I miss romantic contact. I wish I was more outgoing with those things without needing the bond but I just don’t have it in me. 

- what does your happy place look like?

Man. This is hard. Probably a nice apartment or small house with a cat (or a few) that’s by a body of water and woods, yet not too disconnected from the city. I’d be around my friends, who would want to come visit and spend time with me. Even having a roommate who I click with would be fantastic. I have a steady job in art somehow and I’m still able to enjoy concerts or other fun things without having to worry too much about money. 

- favourite breed of dog?

I love my Sheltipoms but I’m biased. For bigger dogs, I’ve always liked huskies and German shepherds. For smaller ones I’ve always loved Corgi, Papillon. and Pomeranian or German Spitz.

- do you ever want to be married? If so what colours would you pick for your wedding theme?

I mean, I would love to be comfortable enough with someone to settle down like that but right now it feels so unrealistic. Romance has actually been a really difficult thing in my life and it remains one of the things I’m most insecure and emotionally upset about. That being said. . . I think orange, reds and purples (like a sunset) would be really pretty. Or I’d go total nerd and want to do a Harry Potter type wedding and have silvers and greens (Slytherin represent!) and whatever my partner’s house colors would be.

favourite weather?

I’m a fan of warm to what most consider as hot weather (60-80s) but I also love a cool, crisp day. One where you can get away with a light jacket and maybe a scarf without feeling bitter cold any time the wind happens to blow. I’m very over feeling cold to my very bones over half of the year (I live in Ohio.)
