happy sleepover saturday, sola! what's some of your favorite vietnamese foods? i've heard there's good vietnamese food in the area i just moved to and i would love some recommendations of things to try!
happy sleepover saturday shiloh! ooh okay some categories:
i think genuinely everyone should try these at least once, and they're pretty easy to find many places:
pho (beef noodle soup, there are also chicken and vegetarian [chay] versions)
banh mi (sandwich on a french baguette–"dac biet" aka combo style will often have some different bbq meats, pickled radish and carrot, and cilantro)
harder to find but i like them a lot:
bun bo hue (spicy beef noodle soup with a tomato-y broth)
che (dessert pudding, great on a hot day, lots of different boba-like toppings. bambu is the most popular us chain)
my personal favorites, mostly central region or home-cooking specialties that are harder to find elsewhere, unless there's a vietnamese deli:
xoi (sticky rice! my favorite savory kind has chinese sausage and chicken, and my favorite sweet kind is bright red and sprinkled with sugar, sesame seed, and dried coconut, but there are lots of different "flavors")
mi quang (my all time favorite food. bright yellow noodles, tomato-y soup, shellfish and pork and banana flower shreds. it's peak central cuisine to me)
banh bot loc (crystal tapioca dumplings) and banh nam (flat dumplings wrapped in banana leaf)
ca kho/thit kho (braised caramel sauce fish or pork belly, sometimes with eggs! ideal homecooked meal)
ca ri ga (chicken curry! thinner than most indian or japanese curries—you can dip a baguette into it and soak up all the good broth)

Tofu veggie pho hits every time! 🍲 The pho noodles are from Costco. I just added in my own sautéed veggies; tofu, broccoli, carrot, zucchini, yellow squash, leeks, and water chestnuts. Top with crushed cashews. Meal prep 101: Double up when cooking so you have enough for lunch the next day!

Hanoi Night Street Food Tour
Hanoi Night Street Food Tour
Long Biên Bridge at Night – iStock Nighttime in Hanoi is a happy part of the day. People relax, socialize, and get a break from the hot, punishing sun. Experiencing Hanoi at any time of the day is priceless, but nighttime is not quite so hectic. I’ve been suffering a bit from the intense daytime heat. It zaps my energy and sometimes makes it hard to concentrate and focus. Some days, I feel like a…

Homemade pho, featuring carrot, choy sum, mushrooms, baby corn, chilli and our homegrown mung bean sprouts!
I cooked this low fodmap dinner for my food intolerant partner, a life without garlic and onion isn't as scary as you might think! This meal was incredibly flavoursome, thanks to some whole spices, and ginger, chilli and turmeric!

Happy Buddha Kitchen, 5551 Rosemead Blvd, Temple City, CA 91780

Mr. Froyo loves Vietnamese food but he’s sensitive to MSG and vegetarian. When the new Vietnamese vegetarian restaurant opened in Temple City, it seemed like a place that he would like. I did ask if they use MSG. They had a hard time understanding what MSG was and then one person seemed to know what it was but could not answer the question. So, I’ll assume that there might be MSG but they don’t knowingly add it to their dishes. It might be in the sauces???
They have appetizers (summer rolls, egg rolls), pho, bun bo hue, fried noodles, vermicelli bowls, fried rice, curry, and Vietnamese drinks. Prices are cheap. Nothing is over $11.95.
Banh uot dac biet ($11.95): steamed rice rolls topped with a few vegetarian versions of faux meat (tofu, taro, something else), shredded veggies (substitute for shredded pork), fresh herbs, fresh bean sprouts, lettuce, flat wide rice noodles, fish sauce, hot sauce. I didn’t try any but Mr. Froyo said it was light, flavorful, and fresh. And he didn’t have an MSG reaction.
Curry bun ($11.95): rice noodle soup in a spicy yellow curry broth, thin rice noodles, cilantro, fake/faux meat (seitan, yuba, soy), mushrooms, and tofu, served with fresh bean sprouts, fresh basil, jalapeno, lime wedge on the side. Vietnamese curry is usually made with chicken broth and yellow curry powder. Well, I did not miss the chicken broth. Their curry broth had a ton of flavor, not too much coconut milk, and a good level of spicy heat. There were several types of faux meat and they actually tasted different and had different textures. The fake chicken had the texture and flavor of chicken!! The fake beef was chewy and meaty though it didn’t taste like beef. I didn’t miss the meat. The noodle soup was complex and interesting.
Online ordering available on their website. The restaurant is in an older space but it looks nice and recently remodeled. It seemed clean with mirrors around the perimeter (a popular look for Vietnamese restaurants). Strip mall parking was easy to find.
5 out of 5 stars.
