Lester Young outside the Five Spot Jazz Club, the Bowery, 1958.
The first jazz musician I ever photographed, Lester Young performing at The Five Spot Café, on the Bowery, 1958. Now here was a quiet soul, someone who let his music speak for him. I took this shot outside before the show, Lester being greeted by an unknown admirer or so I believe. I've never been able to identify this person. The famous pork pie hat at a slight—and cool—angle.

Shine Brightly Forever and a Day
Happiness is an inside job. Don't assign anyone else that much power over your life. Hello dear friends and readers. Welcome to another write-up moment. I want to be an all genre lighthouse off the shore one day, where my role would be to shine brightly as possible to the darkness. Come join me on this exploration and discover music's exceptional gifts.
For over 45 years, American composer musician and arranger Benny Golson has been one of the architects of Jazz. His compositions have contributed to the songbooks of many groups and leaders, from Miles Davis to Quincy Jones. Golson is known for co-founding and co-leading The Jazztet with trumpeter Art Farmer in 1959.
The song of the moment was performed by American vocalist and pianist Shirley Horn, who was backed by a string orchestra consisting of 12 cellos. The song was written as a tribute to the late wife of Golson’s dear friend and colleague, Art Farmer.
