HP fic rec list: underrated gems of 2022

AO3 collection here. mostly ultra rare pairs, gen fic, character studies, and G/T rated fic. all are short <10k-ish reads (plenty of <1k ficlets) - do give them a read if any look interesting!

transports of delight by @swoontodeath (1.7k, G). The Knight Bus meets the Catbus. Sometimes destiny looks a lot like driving in the same direction.

pairing: Knight Bus (Harry Potter)/Catbus (My Neighbor Totoro). come for the crack ship, stay for the autistic stan shunpike. i’m a sucker for outsider POV and this is why — such great opportunity for some unique characterization, which this author took full advantage of here!

Life of Pye by @houseofhebrideanblacks (9k, E). Augustus Pye sees patients at St. Mungo's.

SUCH a creative unique fic - love it when authors take their deep IRL expertise and weave it into the canon HP verse. as the author put it, for anyone curious about what a nonmagical doctor sounds like writing about what they imagine magical medicine is like, day in and day out.

“It’s Puddlemere versus the Cannons tonight. The cup final.” Pye stopped mid-stride and mid-thought, shoulders seeming to weep under the weight of realisation. “Oh no,” he almost whispered. “Oh yes,” Marge glowered, “and you’re alone tonight, Rupert is off sick.” “Good heavens,” Pye whimpered, his coffee seeming to shrink in his hand, both in potency and relevance. In the waiting room behind him, three blokes hurricaned in chanting “CANNONS, CANNONS, CANNONS,” their unconscious friend slumped and dragged between them. “You know how it is, Pye,” Marge turned and shuffled back to validate the young witch’s national insurance card. Speaking over her shoulder, she finished, “never a dull moment at Mungo’s.”

postwar cho/padma. i ADORE this fic. there are literally LINKS to all the places and foods and songs mentioned, it’s an ENTIRE immersive multimedia experience in 3k words - a beautiful and horrendously underappreciated fic, imo.

Parvati quoted that saying to us one evening last month, suggesting that it would be good for Cho and me. My parents knew that I had been with Cho for just over a year then, and welcomed her to stay with us after the Battle … Cho actually looked interested at the idea and suggested our home countries for a month each. And so, we’re currently visiting Mumbai first, staying in a Muggle area at my Muggle maushi’s place, in July—during the monsoon season.

one of my absolute favorite characterizations of reid. this functions as both a character study of reid in season 11 through the lens of unrequited love, and is wonderfully angsty. cw: drinking, referenced past drug use

reid’s time in prison and the toll it takes on the team told through text messages between garcia and morgan. i’m not usually a fan of text fics, but this is so subtle yet evocative and moving. cw: brief implied suicide

an excuse to get hurt by innerslytherin

reid’s is struggling after he’s kidnapped by tobias hankel, and morgan gets a front row seat to this when he sees spencer at a club. this captures spencer’s anger and bitterness, but also his hurt and fear in such an organic and genuine way. cw: drug use, sex

reid’s take on the toll his neuroses have on him, while trying to reconcile those aspects of his personality. short character study. though reid is autistic, i think this fic feels very accurate to how he would understand himself if he didn’t have/use that label. no content warnings.

this is a series where reid helps out with taking care of hank after morgan leaves the bau. one of my favorite characterizations of reid; i think it captures his flaws and how he processes emotions, especially considering the season. ***unfinished*** cw: discussions of sex and masturbation, panic attacks, mentions of depression, unhealthy relationships

this is set directly after emily’s death, and follows the teams grief, specifically spencer’s struggle with an eating disorder. this fic is heavy and can be a difficult read at times, but it’s beautifully written. major cw for eating disorders, discussions of weight and food. additional cw: implied alcoholism, referenced drug use, suicidal ideation

beautifully captured spencer’s grief after gideons death in a way that feels raw and authentic, complete with much needed hurt/comfort. cw: referenced major character death

set during 11x21, very needed scene between hotch and reid after reid’s interaction with antonia slade, taking into account his issues with germs and neurodivergence. i think some portrayals of reid as blatantly autistic (as opposed to a more implied approach) can infantilize him but i think this is incredibly well done. hurt/comfort. cw: germaphobia, panic attack/meltdown, self harm (as part of meltdown)

moreid fic set during 5x10. the characterization of both reid and morgan is spot on, and this is so soft. i also so so appreciate how this includes reid’s knee injury! so many fics set in season 5 forgo mentioning it altogether and have reid doing things that he would not be able to. cw: references to the events of 5x09

as he loves you (author unknown)

moreid fic again, basically an in depth character study of both from the others perspective. there is not enough good and accurate characterization of morgan and this does it so so well. even if you don’t ship moreid at all, worth the read for that alone. cw: racism, homophobia, referenced csa/molestation, referenced bullying

relief in regrets by @imagining-in-the-margins

reader insert angsty smut set during early season 12. i truly do not see people write about pre prison season 12 reid enough, and this is so so good. cw: sex

the mirror man by blythechild

another fic about angsty early season 12 reid, but this time it’s from emily’s perspective as she tries to navigate her romantic feelings towards him while he falls apart. this diverges from canon and he doesn’t go to prison. honestly, as someone who thinks emily and reid are both gay, this spemily fic is one of the best cm fics i’ve ever read. once again everything by this author is incredible, but this fic in particular is dark and emotional and great. cw: minor character death, grief, depression, drug use, alcoholism, sex, suicidal ideation

angels by dilaudiddreams

the most poetic, beautifully written reid whump i’ve read thus far. reid struggles with his addiction but it gets much, much darker. the characterization of reid is heartbreaking and compelling, and morgan is spot on as well. ***unfinished*** major cw for drug use and addiction, torture, and violence. additional cw for referenced incest, csa, and child abuse.

casimir pulaski day by highway58

this fic diverges from canon and follows reid as he struggles with cancer. this is so detailed and the writing is so heartbreaking and powerful, this fic has made me emotional multiple times. it is a very heavy read, but i cannot recommend it enough. ***ongoing*** cw: cancer, hospitals, graphic medical stuff, depression, drug addiction

missing pieces of sleep by highway58, masterworlds

obviously i don’t read much hotchreid, but this fic is too good not to include. follows reid after he gets out of prison and hotch as get gets out of witness protection, as they come together again. ***ongoing*** cw: ptsd, illness, vomiting, panic attacks, brief referenced suicide

(Different anon, just wanting to clarify that real quick.)

This is mostly my own spin with some wholesomeness thrown in:

During Legends, Raymesis ends up teaming up with Rayman (hence why he's playable) in order to take Ales down, as he got quite enough of the dude.

Before Legends though, all the way back during Rayman 2 actually, Raymesis ends up befriending Dark Globox and at some unknown point also Glombrox. Despite being a seemingly big brute who likes to scare people, Glombrox was surprisingly the most level-headed of the group. Raymesis ends up actually prefering the hero-turned-criminal that was Glombrox over his original father (Mr. Dark). So Raymesis ended up getting himself and his two siblings some new frog friends. If you know that meme of a tired looking guy holding a gremling on a leash, that's pretty much Glombrox with the group, or at least most of them, but he wouldn't have it any other way.

Glombrox and Tychon could enjoy just taking the day of and read or go explore some ancient ruins for lost knowlegde.

Zephyr and Dark Globox pretty much constantly encouraged each other's chaotic nature.

Raymesis mostly just rolled with everyone quite frankly.

At some point Tychon does end up getting a crush, this being on the princess Olympia, after she saved him by stopping a large ogre's fist with just one hand. Tychon ended up chatting with Olympia quite a bit, about her home of Olympus, her powers, why she was here and so on. She in return asked about a lot of the things Tychon had going on, true she wasn't booksmart like they were, but they were still curious which Tychon liked.

Zephyr meanwhile does end up getting a wholesome friendship with Tily the Fairy, both of them going around pranking people and causing mischief. This does help Zephyr slowly leaning more towards the good side of chaos. Zephyr does have to remind her that Dark Globox is not a frog to use as a bouncing castle from time to time though.

Rayman and Raymesis meanwhile becomes rivals/frienemis, but Raymesis would never admit to actually liking Rayman's company after all these years.

In the future, we're talking about post-Mini here, Mr. Dark returns to the group. Raymesis, after both meeting Glombrox and teaming up with Rayman is kinda hesitant to return to his side. At first they team up, but it's actually Glombrox and Zephyr who decides to make a change here; first with Glombrox beating Mr. Dark to a pulp after getting enough of his ego ruining everything they planned and just overall not liking the guy, and Zephyr who when later on Mr. Dark is near-defeat asks her to open a portal to get him out of there, she refuses which ultimately leads to Mr. Dark dying. (I was also thinking Ly the Fairy, but i thought Olympia would be more interesting, unless you want me to elaborate.)

For a moment they don't know what to do with themselves, but as time passes, they end up actually prefering to live without Mr. Dark. Tychon does eventually leave the group, deciding to move to Olympus with Olympia, while Zephyr ends up becoming Voodoo Mama's new assistant. Raymesis stayed behind with Dark Globox and Glombrox though, the three of them turning one of Ales' old hideouts into a new house. Raymesis still keeps in contact with his siblings to this day, and while he still doesn't wanna admit it, he's thankful that Rayman won that battle all those years ago.

Oh, this is very wholesome indeed...

Besides some things that I wanted to clarify is with that battling Mr Dark is much more of a team effort and I'm not too sure if I want Tychon to have a crush on Olympia, perhaps just have her as a friend or what not. Other than those, this is such good stuff.

I especially enjoyed Dark Globox and Zephyr being chaotic buddies so here ya go. I might draw the rest soon. And I think I'll rename Dark Globox into Maddox, to fit in with the group.

I've chosen "Renegades" by X Ambassadors for them because I think there are lots of ways this song is fitting for Gajeel and Juvia who are (at least when we first meet them) kind of these misfit rebels trying to find their way in the world. But I think this song really speaks to them leaving their more chaotic days in Phantom Lord behind and starting a new life in the Fairy Tail guild without knowing what would happen just like well... (at the risk of being too on the nose) "renegades" 😁 There are a lot of very fitting lines for that ("Go forth and have no fear" and "It's our time to make a move/It's our time to make amends" for instance), but I think my favorites are probably in the opening verse:

For your related headcanon, here's a Gajeel and Juvia friendship headcanon from when they first joined the Fairy Tail guild...

When Gajeel and Juvia first joined the Fairy Tail guild, people were (naturally) a little leery of them and a bit standoffish given their complicated history. Gajeel (who was always the type of person who could take or leave people) didn't care too much what they thought about him, but it did make him more worried for Juvia who had always been more openly kindhearted and sensitive than he was. He knew how desperately Juvia wanted to be accepted in Fairy Tail, and he didn't want her to get a bad rep or the cold shoulder from their new guildmates given her past in Phantom Lord, so when people did eventually start to converse with him and he (slowly) started to make some friends/be adopted by the guild, he always tried to make a point to talk up Juvia and share stories about her that painted her in a very favorable light so (hopefully) people wouldn't be scared of her and would be more welcoming towards her. Even though Gajeel tried his best to be discreet and nonchalant about it (and would never admit to doing any of this), some of the more observant guild members (like Mira Jane and Levy) caught onto what he was doing and thought it was sweet how he thought so highly of Juvia and was really trying to look out for her and help her be accepted by their new guild.

louise is a hard person to appease as far as i can tell. if anyone is going to fit her ideal type—be it platonic or romantic—they better be ready for a hot pursuit. there's far too many characters to name that make her feel a certain type of way. so i'm sticking with plastique (bette sans souci), firehawk (lorraine reilly) and deadshot (floyd lawton) as the three primary examples of louise's genuine crushes, obsessions and sexual interests based on canon evidence.

the first person she had a crush on was plastique when she was beginning her criminal career. frost was pretty expressive and shameless in her pursuit, yet backed away whenever bette displayed disinterest. they barely knew each other and kf was already in awe of her upon their first meeting after she got saved and plastique 'killed' firestorm. she seemed to get over the abrupt rejection and went after firehawk who was sorta similar to bette in terms of their appearances.

the thing that stands out to me the most is that killer frost always had a thing for redheads because she also flirted with firehawk and these were tough women on opposite sides of the law. arguably enough, louise was in a mourning state and probably wanted a distraction away from the inducing pain she felt from crystal's death.

unlike with bette, louise unleashed her sadism onto firehawk and it was more about trying to snuff the flames rather than pursue an actual love interest. she developed a weird, hate obsessive streak and it's mainly rooted with the fact firehawk was allies with firestorm. the only excitement is just the thrill of the kill and the thought of firestorm being devastated by his friend's death. plus, firehawk's blue flames trigger a euphoric response from louise since she thrives on heat source. blue fire burns the hottest does it not?

next we have deadshot. a great example of a healthy friendship she had in the comics. no matter what race he was depicted as, they're shown to be close friends in the suicide squad. floyd and frost had a knack for killing people, their banters were on point and even wholesome at times (in their own twisted way) and more importantly she holds floyd to a high regard when it comes down to their contract jobs. later in the suicide squad run she expressed sexual interest towards him and offered to hook up when they knew each other for a long time, but he turned her down because he didn't see her that way. she took it well and moved on rather quickly. they are still close friends to this day.

in conclusion, louise prefers intelligent, strong-willed, witty and stoic characters. if the person she's interested in is a redhead then it makes her sexually excited. she won't bother them if they show signs of disdain. with heroes like firehawk, frost will never hold back from being a creep. there's been times where she would be disrespectful on purpose and cause firehawk discomfort. i would call this 'one-sided mock flirting' at best. it's the sole reason why i don't like shipping frost with heroic characters because she will be the most unhinged bitch you've ever seen lmfao

🦒 ---- How does your muse feel about height? Do they like their height or are they ashamed of it?

her height makes her incredibly insecure because she got chubby as a teenager from eating fast food and suffered from body issues from how much of a fat slob she felt, which was accompanied by chubby short legs and muffin top pouring out whenever she wore tight jeans. it was obvious because of her shortness. even sucking her stomach in or wearing baggy clothes couldn't prevent from being viewed as a 'bloated beach ball' if you will.

louise got bullied by the popular girls in her school and developed low self esteem issues ever since. unfortunately it's how she got obsessed into incorporating workout routines everyday by playing sports such as netball or tennis until she finally slipped into the ideal image society wanted her to be: petite and adorable with a trim figure. nobody wants a chubby pig for a friend. it's been ingrained into her brain ever since.

most of the time louise wears high heels, platform shoes and boots with thick soles to seem taller than she actually is. loves to tower over people (mostly the men) when it comes to staircases. it's all about the power trip she receives from it, growing tired of getting picked on or underestimated just because she's 5'3''. she stopped growing the moment she hit her teenagehood and had to make up for her lack of intimidation in appearance by resorting to boosting her personality up. even before her criminal career she felt powerless and unheard among others.

living in nyc isn't for the weak willed and as a result to that, become louder than the city ever could be and i mean that in a "you listen to me! not the bustling of the city streets and cars passing us by!" kind of typical nyc attitude. it worked for her and others would usually notice her volume first before her height came in second place.

i would also like to incorporate that louise stands on her tippy toes whenever she's angry without even realising it until someone pokes fun at her for it. it's funny af.

hear me out here because i have this idea, and i've been thinking about it for only hour now, and it's almost midnight and i have two major assignments due tomorrow morning but this takes precedence

so buckle up guys, cos sherlock bbc......... but doctor who bbc (this will all make sense in a moment)

I. the characters are absolutely perfect for all the relevant roles, and im sure there are tons of others which i just haven't thought of yet:

sherlock as the doctor: he has the intelligence, the deduction, the spontaneity, the trauma, and some of the humour (current work in progress). i'll admit his charisma can be better but we've seen a few awkward reiterations of the doctor in the past, so i'll let it slide. it'll give him character. his little quirk of knowing the most useless stuff about the most useless things to solve the most important cases but in space could be such an interesting perspective to see, and look at what the writers come up with surrounding the details of the galactic environments. and to be honest, the doctor themselves are already essentially a consulting detective, the only difference being that they hire themselves. plus, i feel like he would be oddly extremely attached to his tardis, and maybe his screwdriver could have like a collapsable magnifying glass at the other end, just for shits and giggles. he'd also remind me of twelve a bit, and not just because of the cheekbones.dr

john watson as the companion: he has the morals which the doctor sometimes lacks, the rational thinking, he's the emotional support for the over-the-top doctor, he essentially fulfils every role of a companion. we can see how it fits in with his sherlock bbc character too: as many of the doctor's companions, he learns over time and actually becomes higher-than-averagely adept at working out solutions for problems. hes so wonderfully human, and it would fit well with the alien/human dynamic between the doctor and his companion. and i feel like john would have big rory energy. we haven't even taken in the consideration of the "the doctor. which one?" jokes.

jim moriarty as the master: don't tell me you can't see it, because you know deep down that i am right. both the master and moriarty are chaos loving antagonistic figures, charming and charismatic, full of ambition to control whatever they can and whoever they want, yet they focus on what they may consider their homoerotic arch-rival. plus, they're commonly referred to with a name beginning with the letter "m" (which is literally just bonus points!) and just imagine the possibilities of a female moriarty. like fuck off that's too much for my blood pressure. (eurus?????)

irene adler as river song: it's the vibe, it's the attitude, it's the intelligence. irene would be such a good river: she's independent, a borderline criminal, and witty beyond anyones comprehension. however, in this case irene would be a mix of both the irene from the book and from the show, since she's substantially smarter in terms of "who has the biggest brains" in the books rather than the tv series. nevertheless, i would still like to have her as not a love-interest but a love possibility, edging on that with the maximum being flirts, and obviously john in the background going full rory mode (as mentioned earlier). i just think it would be so neat.

greg lestrade as kate stewart: police/chief officer on earth, usually the one to contact the doctor when the planet is in danger? has some form of kind of stale yet wholesome but confusing friendship with the doctor, where they know both a lot and absolutely nothing about him? i think it fits the criteria for greg lestrade perfectly, and i love that it adds the possibility of banter between sherlock's doctor and chief greg of unit.

mycroft holmes as a member of the high gallifreyan council: what could the doctor consider to be the greatest nuisance, and what has recordedly tampered with his relationships and plans and life in the past? the council of his home planet, which could realistically allow for one of the doctor's brothers to be part of the council, and possibly even be it's leader. however, a cool dynamic which i think could be explored is that mycroft wouldn't be the head of the council but rather a side yet very important member, who can slightly interefere with the council's plan to assist his brother sometimes, only sticking by the rules if he disagrees entirely with the doctor. what his time-lord name could be? the officer, the official (something like that), though i'd appreciate name ideas

mrs hudson as sarah jane smith: this was a bit hard to decide on, but i think this is by far the most interesting idea i've had for mrs hudson after a solid 5 minutes of looking up characters. i can see mrs hudson, or martha as she'd be called then, act as a companion for the doctor in a previous reincarnation many years ago, like in the 70s or 80s, otherwise staying at home at 221a baker street, working on a computer and serving cuppas should the doctor and john ever stop by. could give a more alien context to her drug dealing husband; maybe he was caught up in an otherwordly drug scandal, and that's how the doctor and mrs hudson ended up meeting. additionally, i think that she'd also have k9, but he'd be shaped a bit like a bull-dog after the bull pup which john has in the books.

II. the tardis. there are so many ideas for the tardis itself, and i can imagine that she'd kind of resemble a hybrid child of eleven's tardis and the interior of the 221b flat. plus, she could have an address this time: 221b, anywhere. i know it sounds a bit corny, but i wanted to find a way to weave in the famous address into this narrative.

III. wholock.

This photo is at number 10 as it is a beautiful photo but it’s not my most favouritist of his photos. Why? Because his gorgeous face is covered, and as wholesome as this photo is, it still takes that tenth place.

That’s not necessarily a bad thing though, he looks goofy of course and that’s my favourite type of photos that Charlie has done, but I just feel there’s better photo, and trust me you’re gonna see them very soon 😏

I realised this week that Part 3 has SEVEN plotlines, which sort of put things in perspective. I don't feel as bad for how many chapters it's taken to move things along. I'm just holding seven plot threads while trying to keep weaving them into the story without dropping any.

Metropolis actually looks like the city of tomorrow. You know how Batman adaptations make Gotham very distinct with a broody atmosphere and Gothic architecture? We need the same energy for Metropolis. Metropolis should look bright, shining and borderline futuristic. Metropolis should have a proper 50’s retro-futurism vibe. Long monorails, golden shiny buildings, rounded glass penthouses

A proper Fortress Of Solitude.

Properly show that Jonathan and Martha Kent instill in the values that makes Clark Kent Superman.

Show Superman actively saving the people of Metropolis and Smallville. Show why Superman is a symbol of hope and why the people love him

Do not kill off Pa or Ma Kent in the first movie.

Actually focus on Clark’s life as a reporter for the Daily Planet, how the non-superhero aspects of Clark are just as important as his time as Superman and so there should be a good amount of screen time dedicated to showing and exploring that. Oh and actually show his friendship with Jimmy Olsen instead of stupidly introducing Jimmy and killing him off. Hahaha fuck you Snyder.

Make Lois the sassy and hard as nails reporter who gets shit done no matter what with Jimmy as her right hand man

Make the Clark and Lois dynamic as wholesome and charming as always. Have Lois figure out about Clark being Superman quite early, but waits for Clark to tell her. Make sure that it's clear that Lois loves Clark for Clark, not just because he's Superman, 'cause I'm sick of that "She wouldn't look twice at him if he was just Clark" bullshit some people spout.

Have General Lane, Dr Hamilton, Maggie Sawyer, William Henderson and Dan Turpin be reoccurring characters

Make Lex Luthor a legit threat that could bring Superman to his knees. Show Lex as a corrupt businessman. Like a Jeff Beezos/Elon Musk type Billionare and show him as the mad scientist who tinkers and experiments on humans to further the reach in his quest in destroying Superman. Lex Luthor is cunning, he’s a genius, a criminal mastermind and will ignore all ethical boundaries until his goals are met. When Luthor is in the room, he owns it. Every word that comes out of his mouth is meticulously planned and he is a master manipulator. The reason why he is such a brilliant Superman villain is because even though he has no physical powers, he can always beat the Man Of Steel on intellect alone. And the worst part? He believes his crusade against Superman is just and to some degree would have reasons some might believe him. Also? Lex should see himself as The Man Of Tomorrow. Lex worked hard all his life. Studied for years to increase his knowledge. Did everything he could to escape his abusive father and the town he grew up in, and eventually became one of the richest people in the whole world. And then this alien comes out of nowhere. He sees all the destruction he’s caused and sees the terror he could represent. But the people love him? and suddenly everything is all about him and everybody seems to love him…and Lex can’t understand that at all nor can he do anything to be like Superman. He’s human after all. All he can do is view Superman with distrust and think of the worst cases possible. What if this flying man decided to rule us all? What effects will this flying man have on humanity? Will he actually prevent humanity from evolving by making them dependent? Those are the questions Lex Luthor has and in his mind, he’s the one in the right…and if you really think about it, some of his concerns are quite valid. In his own way, He believes he’s helping humanity by trying to eliminate Superman and that one day, humanity will understand why. In his mind, Lex Luthor is the Man of Steel determined to save the world from the evil alien. But we’d see this is all a façade. The true Lex is nothing but a megalomaniacal maniac, a genius who gives a reason why he hates Superman, but at the end of the day, is just a petty jackass who refuses to help advance humanity until he gets what he wants.

More than just Lex. I want to see more villains than just Lex. Adapt What’s So Funny About Truth, Justice and The American Way? So we can see Manchester Black(and for the love of god don’t cast a person of colour to play a racist, because WTF Supergirl) Monstrosities Of Lex Luthor:Show off the mad scientist aspect of Luthor and introduce both Metallo and Parasite and maybe include Bizarro in this mix. Bring in Brainiac as the big bad around the third movie. Hell even throw in Livewire, Mongul and Darkseid. I’m tired of people saying Superman doesn’t have a good rogues gallery, so we need to show them how wrong that is.
