aa you’re a history teacher? what age group do you teach ! would love to hear your thoughts on teaching (i am interested in going into it)
i’m finishing up student teaching rn as a grad student and am gonna start at the same grade level i’m currently at full time next year (14-18 year olds. a bit weird since i’m currently 22 but i do love teaching high school.) the pay is terrible covid has exacerbated every system failure and inequity and the republican party is trying to destroy the public education system including and especially the teaching of accurate history and i’m pretty sure i only have a few more years tops of being able to safely teach as a gay person in the south.
BUT Fascist apocalypse stuff aside i LOVE it so far. Was torn between trying to get a history PhD and teaching K-12 and i’m so happy i picked this i love working with people so much. my students are very cool and it’s so fun to work with them. obviously it is also very hard but it feels very worth it at the end of most days. teaching is one of those things where i think you have to like working with kids as much as you like the content, which is definitely something you gotta figure out for yourself. but i’m happy with having picked it :)

Hot take but if AP Daily videos are just gonna be people reading off of slides, then Collegeboard should also just post the slideshows in case some of us prefer to go at our own pace.

Yesterday, I was taking one of those big future deciding standardized test whatnots, and our proctor was just this sweet older Eastern European lady who Did Not Give A Shit™️
She read some of the rules/regulations that she was obligated to read at the “wrong times” (i.e. between sections of the tests instead of at the end when we all want to leave the goddamn building) and just straight up skipped over some sections that were mind numbingly repetitive
AND she completely overlooked the rule that said “you can only eat during your break” she just looked up and told us, “Yeah, I’m going to let you guys eat whenever you want to during the test, just be sure to put it on your desk.”
She actually told us “I’m not paid enough to care about this” when she was going over some other excessive regulations. It was glorious.
All in all, for a final testing experience for this particular test that I’m going to have, it wasn’t such a bad way to end.

ap class tips
for those in ap classes who are struggling. also for those who aren't really. whatever.
just as an intro to my qualifications:
i go to a stem high school (will be graduating next sem!) where all the classes are already advanced as is (our ap classes are also taught differently!) i've taken a total of 10 ap classes during my time, and while that isn't as much as others, i'd say i have a pretty good spread of ap classes i took!
general ap class tips
remember that the ultimate goal for you taking this course is to take the exam and get a 4/5 (reach for that 5!). yes, the grade is important, but that score at the end after that exam might save anywhere from $600-$1200+ in college. so focus your energy on that exam once the exams are encroaching!
make friends in your ap classes. trauma bonding is real (/j) so making friends that will help you study or might save you when you accidentally forgot is key.
and while they all say "study a bit every night!" that's hard to do. the rule of thumb here for every class will be in the categorized sections, so don't worry (i gotchu!!)
ap math (calc ab/bc, stat, physics, chem, etc.)
i personally didn't take physics or chem bc i didn't want to, but i did take bc and got a 5 (yes, i'm so proud)!
rule of thumb for studying at home: do your homework everyday and actually take the time to understand what the hell you're doing. understand what the process is behind solving the problem. be able to pull out the variables. practice, practice, practice. also, this is one of those subjects where it's actually worth it to study it at home everyday.
ANOTHER RULE: practice tests. these math exams are about stamina and speed. if you can solve a problem, great! but now here comes 20 more screaming your name. but, if you can get the timing down before your exam, that's even better. so go waste your saturday afternoon at that mock exam if you need to. another saturday will come in time anyway. ask your teacher for mock exams. get that practice workbook. whatever it takes. get the timing in your hand.
just as a quote from my teacher, "life is about choices, and we are all busy people." don't waste your time doing something that'll waste your time. even if you can't remember it, that's okay. just keep moving and score more points somewhere else. and also, do the easy route. only memorize the easy route.
math is about patterns. patterns rule math. extract that pattern out of that problem, memorize it, and you'll be just fine.
FRQS WILL HURT YOUR BRAIN AND THAT'S OKAY! collegeboard has a very specific way it wants you to answer these questions. the best way to learn the format is to do so many frqs your hands hurt. because in any exam that involves math, you genuinely need to do better on the frqs. they'll land you more points. yes, the mcq might get you that 5, but the frqs become the basic 3 or 4 that you need. your teacher will hopefully teach you the format, but if they don't, the collegeboard ap website has all the past frqs they've ever made.
YOU WILL BE OKAY. I PROMISE. make sure that if you cry, you understand your disappointment then move on to a larger action plan.
ap histories/humanities (art history, u.s history, euro, world, etc.)
i've taken all the histories that my school offers (apush, euro, apwh, apah, etc.)
rule of thumb: don't study at home unless there's a test coming up or you're bad at putting stuff in order.
GET YOUR WRITING SKILLS DOWN PAT. this is the thing that'll get you the most points. that mcq section is a killer, but doing 3-6 (looking at you apah exam) right after might just kill you. so please, get your stamina up. just write. just keep writing.
timeline shit for history. because when it comes down to it, knowing the sequence of events and knowing the events themselves are more important than dates or whatever.
if you're worried about coherency in your writing, jot down a small pre-writing list.
memorize every single rubric. luckily, the dbq/leq rubric is the same across apush, apwh, and euro. you'll get away with just memorizing the two. the apah rubric is a little different, and the ap lit rubric is a little different. just memorize them as best you can.
when writing, cater to your reader. make things easy to spot and easy to grade. they'll give you a higher score if they can clearly see where things are.
just practice mcqs. all the stimulus will have something you can pull out of it (unless it's like apah where you're meant to memorize the works). but every question will have an answer that's in the passage. practice finding that answer. (this one is still really hard)
all these tests are tests of stamina. and sometimes, they're on the same goddamn day because collegeboard hates love us. just keep going. grab a snack. rest your eyes, go.
essays are the bane of everyone’s existence in ap courses because you’re on this strict rubric and have this mythical complexity/sophistication point that you need to give your hopes and dreams of achieving. BUT. but. you’ll be okay. especially for exams like the ap lit/apah exam, you get to come in knowing at least a bit of the exam (for ap lit, a good part of the frq weight. for apah, 90% of the test). TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT!! know a novel inside and out. know the works inside and out. you’ll be okay. stretch your hands, breathe, write.
ap sciences (bio, physics, chem, psych, econ)
i've personally taken bio and both econs, but these are all concept based, so the same general tips apply.
rule of thumb: if you don't understand it in class, you need to study it at home asap. seriously. because you sure as hell won’t be able to put it together during class the next day. whats good though is that there’s so many resources online (esp videos!!) for all the ap sciences that it’s actually crazy.
read your textbook. science is great with a textbook in your hand. you don't even need to read the whole thing. just skim through it to add information to your class notes. most times that works.
because the questions are concept based, the mcq/frqs are a little hard to get used to. SO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS: don’t ignore your responsibilities and learn what these questions look like.
flashcards. USE FLASHCARDS. so much of science is not only understanding concepts but applying them. to apply them, you need to know them by heart. and to know them by heart means flashcards to drill yourself.
and speaking of applying your knowledge, you need to take things slowly. approach questions with this framework: 1) read the problem + understand what concept it’s asking about. 2) pull out that information from your sexy brain. 3) solve the problem based on what you can remember. to truly understand, include a lot of examples in your notes. AND MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND WHY AND HOW THEY WORK. the why and the how are more important than the what.
misc tips 🌷
burnout is inevitable if you don’t manage your time correctly. there’s people online that can explain how to manage your energy more than me so please go watch them instead lmfao
try your best to stay on your schedule. the more you push your tasks to this arbitrary tomorrow, the more you absolutely won’t do them.
honey, you need to bring a snack and a water bottle to those exams, you get like a 10 minute break that isn’t enough for the mental taxation (without representation) that happens on those exams. they’re brutal.
the classes themselves are not as bad you think. i promise. most of the time, you’ll actually have fun. and it’s really cool to be learning at a college level. so keep at it! the moment you hate something, the moment you begin to stop trying as hard and your grades start slipping. keep finding the next thing to delude yourself into enjoying (/hj).

wait i just saw ur taking an ap test soon and as a former ap kid i have to offer you my best advice because i took six ap tests and passed all of them
okay 1) do not stay up and cram anything the night before. you know all you can by that point. instead get a good nights rest. a nice sleep will do way better than anything else
2) bring water and snacks. hydration is key to success. also eat a really good breakfast/lunch depending on when your exam is. filed your brain girl
3) if you know nothing about the prompt you get just start writing. literally write so much that eventually you hit something. i did this with my ap lit exam and ended up getting a 4 because i just wrote and wrote and wrote until eventually i felt like i got something somewhere that had to be right
4) comfy clothes. i can not stress this enough. layers too because you never know if the room will be hot or cold. and you don’t want to be uncomfortable for hours on end. also my personal preference was to wear slides/slippers because wanted to be able to sit however i wanted and not wear shoes lol.
above all else remember that the collegeboard does not care if you succeed or fail. they are an evil corporation and if i could fist fight trevor packer i would. fuck him and his cryptic ass tweets. this test does not determine you.
(also i feel like i remember you saying you were taking ap gov and as a former ap gov girlie let me wish you the best of luck and if you need any help from me and my stupid tricks to remember the court cases i got you let me know)
six- SIX APS IS CRAZY OH MY LORD I THINK I WOULD DIE LMAO- one is enough for me.
ALSO all of this info is life saving and i will DEF be using it bc ya girl is a tiny bit stressed. but honestly?? ap gov has been my jam so far!! i'm really really good at making little tricks to memorize amendments
for example, the 26th amendment is the one that set the voting age at 18 bc 4+2 =8 which is just 18
im crazy but it works lmao!! im working on writing all them down and memorizing them from there but honestly im having fun with it and im not super concerned about passing (PLEASE LORD LET ME PASS IM BEGGING YOU TO LET ME PASS ILL RIOT IF I DONT PASS)
but ive already been accepted into a college so do i really care??? nooooooooooooo ma'am!!
once again THANKS FOR ALL THE TIPS LOVELY GIRL!!

hi hello ! i really really love your blog so much; as a high schooler still considering something in IT, it gives me a glimpse of what you do as a software developer
the research im doing about software developing and programming has me feeling a little overloaded, so i just wanted to ask (if it's okay)
do you know of any blogs / websites / resources that can aid a high school student in learning more about software development, and what to take in university to get there? any guides to help a high school student overwhelmed with information ?
if not, that's more than okay! thank you very much, and your blog aesthetics are simply stunning <3
Hiya! Thank you so much for your kind words, I'm thrilled to hear that you enjoy my blog and find it helpful as you think about having a career in Tech!! I assume you're an American high school student so I'll try my best to help because I'm British and only know the British school system.
It's completely okay to feel overwhelmed with the amount of information out there about software development and programming, especially when you're still in high school and just starting to explore the field. It's great that you're doing research and trying to learn more about what interests you.
One way to manage the feeling of overload is to break down your research into smaller, more manageable pieces. Try focusing on what courses/classes you can take now to work towards applying for university to do Software Development (or related). Watch YouTube videos about students who are already in university studying the course and watch a 'day in a life...' to get a glimpse of the coursework load, what you will learn etc.
As for what to take in university to prepare for a career in software development, it's a good idea to start with a degree in computer science or a related field:
Software development obviously
Software Engineering
Information Technology
Computer Engineering and more
This will give you a strong foundation in programming, algorithms, and data structures, which are all essential skills for software development.
For choosing AP courses, you could use this tool to help get the right majors for university (I don't know how to word that since I'm British):
"Connect AP to Majors and Careers: Match college majors and careers with the AP courses that can help you get there" - CollegeBoard [LINK]
About how what to take in university to get into Software Development, here are some articles to read, that might help you:
"How to Become a Software Engineer: A Guide for Those Starting From Scratch" - Columbia Engineering [LINK]
"How to Become a Software Developer | 9 Tips" - Coursera [LINK]
"How To Become A Software Engineer: Salary, Education Requirements And Job Growth" - Forbes [LINK]
"How to Become A Software Engineer/Developer: #10 Steps" - Guru99 [LINK]
To find more people your age who are into programming, I recommend joining HackClub! They have a slack group where many teenagers from 13 to even 19-year-olds hang out and talk about coding/programming. It's really inspirational and there are older leaders who can help with university advice as there are people who want to do software development at university as well!:
Hack Club - A Home for High School Hackers [LINK]
Have a go and see what they can help you with! People are really friendly there and want to help as many teenagers as they possibly can. US-based but it's online!
Have a couple of programming languages under your belt to get a head start in university. The first language I was taught during my apprenticeship was Python and then it was C#. I'm guessing you already know your HTML and CSS, pick an OOP language. Read some university courses and see what language comes up the most when researching and start reading more about that language... maybe even start programming in it.
Hope this helps in a way and remember, it's never too early to start exploring your interests and planning for your future. The advice I gave is something I would have done if I was 16 again!
>> If anyone else has advice, please do share! Thank you! 🥰

So with you an anon discussing the terrible conditions of your schools and how all the money go to bullshit like P.E, basketball courts, uniforms etc
Lemme tell you some funny stories, you think California sucks? The deep south is WORSE
My mother went to a middle school sometime in the 70s, while playing volleyball in the gym she spiked the ball so hard it broke an upper window.
It was never fixed and by the time I entered that school in the mid 2000s it was still broken
.Same school was notorious for the heater to always be busted, same with the AC. my 7th grade English class was the worst with temperature since the windows faced the sun, and so we'd cook like weenies over an open fire
The female locker room bathrooms were never took care of and middle school girls are barbarians and would doodle dicks, and offensive language all over the walls and mirrors
The mirrors were confiscated afterwords
By the time I enrolled in high school it was worse, the textbooks hadn't been updated since the Civil rights era (holy fucking shit southern 60's something textbooks were TRASH) and one textbook I got was my mom's and i yelped when i saw her name scrawled in it
The high school had busted old soda machines that were just left to rot int he cafeteria and were a constant reminder that we can't have nothing nice
Oh but we can definitely afford NEW GODAMN MAC BOOKS JESUS GOD
And last but not least, back in the mid 2000s there was a devastating tornadoe that hit the neighboring town to ours and decimated the local high school there. Just wiped it off the fucking map.
SO OUR TOWN got super butt hurt when the president came down and gave funds to help rebuild the school and wanted a new high school as well
Once they secured the funds to build it sometime in the 2010s they went nuts trying to have it built before the next school year, so instead of replacing outdated textbooks, repairing the ventilation and other issues they decided NOPE WANT NEW SCHOOL NOW
Hilarious though nobody realized until too late that the new school was built on several sink holes, we lost a school bus to one I shit you not and now the school is sinking making the building lopsided as all hell
In summary all the money are schools received went to a brand new school that's half sunk in the ground, and shit for the football team
Not to take the Lord's name in vain but Jesus fucking Christ.
And it's so fucking blatant that education in the U.S. is just being sidelined in the priority scale. Like, yes: we don't need to push the narrative that kids HAVE to go to college to have successful lives. But holy fucking shite, K-12 has to be able to properly teach kids 'Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic' and Critical Thinking so that students can leave schools with at least basic comprehension and calculating skills.
There are far too many districts and school administrations that either focus too much on the fluff (sports, aesthetics, and 'Customer Service') or who have given up on their students completely so they just dump tax dollars into shite that really doesn't help student success in the long run but, hey! It's educational, so it must be good, right?
THE PRE-AP 'CURRICULUM' IS FUCKING BULLSHIT, and if you are a parent whose teen comes home with an English class syllabus that says 'Our class utilizes a PreAP system', you need to either hit the dash or call the district and lodge a complaint. Because that shite is useless and it's just school districts paying CollegeBoard for access to a nonsense website and workbooks and the ability to say 'we prep students for college'.

so one thing that was really fun was when i was making my collegeboard account it asked for my gender identity. not my sex. not what i was assigned at birth. GENDER IDENTITY. and so i put down male. and then i went to take my psats and it my biological sex on there and it was listed as female. sure not an issue that's all true.
however :3 when i got the email that my psats scores were available and i went to check them out, i wasnt able to see them !! my collegeboard account info didnt match the info of the psat taker !!! so i had to change my 'gender identity' to female to see my fucking test scores. killing biting maiming collegeboard

I'm so tired of being trans
I'm so tired of having to deal with emails and letters of colleges that don't know me or care about me calling me a name I haven't used in years
I'm tired of seeing pictures of a version of myself that I don't associate myself with at my grandparents houses
I'm tired of seeing a fake name on my credit cards and collegeboard account and even the fucking pills I'm taking to become a woman in the first place
I'm tired of constantly having to worry if my very existence is going to be made harder or even impossible by stinky senile old white farts of excuses for men who happen to hold a snivel of power and not an ounce of humanity in their veins
I'm tired of looking at my shoulders and feeling shame or feeling my chest and it's noticable lack of breasts making me feeling worthless or hearing my voice in recordings and recoiling from how deep it sounds
I'm tired of feeling just above my lip and feeling that disgusting fuzz that I missed or across my entire arm or leg
I'm tired of hearing that name
That stupid disgusting name that isn't mine nor did I ever liked
Uttered by relatives or people I used to know
Or forgetting the letter 's' in 'she' when they refer to me
Am I not feminine enough? Did you forget?
Did you forget who I am? Is it that important to you?
On top of everything else in my life
All the stress, anxiety, and agony of just being alive
I have to deal with this
Maybe not every day
Maybe not even most days
But it adds up
And it adds up fast
I'm so tired
I'm so tired
If you have a trans friend in your life
Please give them a hug
Let them know they matter and that you're there for them
Because they might really need it
I know I do
