self love is important and all, but so is every other type of love that you’re yearning for. yes, its important to love and adore yourself. but you can only heal so much that way — especially when your trauma exists because of who or what wronged you. self love is the first step, but the steps after it too are just as important. all this to say that it isn’t a burden to ask for love. people who love you will give it readily. it isn’t embarrassing or burdensome to tell people how you want to be loved.

ap class tips
for those in ap classes who are struggling. also for those who aren't really. whatever.
just as an intro to my qualifications:
i go to a stem high school (will be graduating next sem!) where all the classes are already advanced as is (our ap classes are also taught differently!) i've taken a total of 10 ap classes during my time, and while that isn't as much as others, i'd say i have a pretty good spread of ap classes i took!
general ap class tips
remember that the ultimate goal for you taking this course is to take the exam and get a 4/5 (reach for that 5!). yes, the grade is important, but that score at the end after that exam might save anywhere from $600-$1200+ in college. so focus your energy on that exam once the exams are encroaching!
make friends in your ap classes. trauma bonding is real (/j) so making friends that will help you study or might save you when you accidentally forgot is key.
and while they all say "study a bit every night!" that's hard to do. the rule of thumb here for every class will be in the categorized sections, so don't worry (i gotchu!!)
ap math (calc ab/bc, stat, physics, chem, etc.)
i personally didn't take physics or chem bc i didn't want to, but i did take bc and got a 5 (yes, i'm so proud)!
rule of thumb for studying at home: do your homework everyday and actually take the time to understand what the hell you're doing. understand what the process is behind solving the problem. be able to pull out the variables. practice, practice, practice. also, this is one of those subjects where it's actually worth it to study it at home everyday.
ANOTHER RULE: practice tests. these math exams are about stamina and speed. if you can solve a problem, great! but now here comes 20 more screaming your name. but, if you can get the timing down before your exam, that's even better. so go waste your saturday afternoon at that mock exam if you need to. another saturday will come in time anyway. ask your teacher for mock exams. get that practice workbook. whatever it takes. get the timing in your hand.
just as a quote from my teacher, "life is about choices, and we are all busy people." don't waste your time doing something that'll waste your time. even if you can't remember it, that's okay. just keep moving and score more points somewhere else. and also, do the easy route. only memorize the easy route.
math is about patterns. patterns rule math. extract that pattern out of that problem, memorize it, and you'll be just fine.
FRQS WILL HURT YOUR BRAIN AND THAT'S OKAY! collegeboard has a very specific way it wants you to answer these questions. the best way to learn the format is to do so many frqs your hands hurt. because in any exam that involves math, you genuinely need to do better on the frqs. they'll land you more points. yes, the mcq might get you that 5, but the frqs become the basic 3 or 4 that you need. your teacher will hopefully teach you the format, but if they don't, the collegeboard ap website has all the past frqs they've ever made.
YOU WILL BE OKAY. I PROMISE. make sure that if you cry, you understand your disappointment then move on to a larger action plan.
ap histories/humanities (art history, u.s history, euro, world, etc.)
i've taken all the histories that my school offers (apush, euro, apwh, apah, etc.)
rule of thumb: don't study at home unless there's a test coming up or you're bad at putting stuff in order.
GET YOUR WRITING SKILLS DOWN PAT. this is the thing that'll get you the most points. that mcq section is a killer, but doing 3-6 (looking at you apah exam) right after might just kill you. so please, get your stamina up. just write. just keep writing.
timeline shit for history. because when it comes down to it, knowing the sequence of events and knowing the events themselves are more important than dates or whatever.
if you're worried about coherency in your writing, jot down a small pre-writing list.
memorize every single rubric. luckily, the dbq/leq rubric is the same across apush, apwh, and euro. you'll get away with just memorizing the two. the apah rubric is a little different, and the ap lit rubric is a little different. just memorize them as best you can.
when writing, cater to your reader. make things easy to spot and easy to grade. they'll give you a higher score if they can clearly see where things are.
just practice mcqs. all the stimulus will have something you can pull out of it (unless it's like apah where you're meant to memorize the works). but every question will have an answer that's in the passage. practice finding that answer. (this one is still really hard)
all these tests are tests of stamina. and sometimes, they're on the same goddamn day because collegeboard hates love us. just keep going. grab a snack. rest your eyes, go.
essays are the bane of everyone’s existence in ap courses because you’re on this strict rubric and have this mythical complexity/sophistication point that you need to give your hopes and dreams of achieving. BUT. but. you’ll be okay. especially for exams like the ap lit/apah exam, you get to come in knowing at least a bit of the exam (for ap lit, a good part of the frq weight. for apah, 90% of the test). TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THAT!! know a novel inside and out. know the works inside and out. you’ll be okay. stretch your hands, breathe, write.
ap sciences (bio, physics, chem, psych, econ)
i've personally taken bio and both econs, but these are all concept based, so the same general tips apply.
rule of thumb: if you don't understand it in class, you need to study it at home asap. seriously. because you sure as hell won’t be able to put it together during class the next day. whats good though is that there’s so many resources online (esp videos!!) for all the ap sciences that it’s actually crazy.
read your textbook. science is great with a textbook in your hand. you don't even need to read the whole thing. just skim through it to add information to your class notes. most times that works.
because the questions are concept based, the mcq/frqs are a little hard to get used to. SO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS: don’t ignore your responsibilities and learn what these questions look like.
flashcards. USE FLASHCARDS. so much of science is not only understanding concepts but applying them. to apply them, you need to know them by heart. and to know them by heart means flashcards to drill yourself.
and speaking of applying your knowledge, you need to take things slowly. approach questions with this framework: 1) read the problem + understand what concept it’s asking about. 2) pull out that information from your sexy brain. 3) solve the problem based on what you can remember. to truly understand, include a lot of examples in your notes. AND MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND WHY AND HOW THEY WORK. the why and the how are more important than the what.
misc tips 🌷
burnout is inevitable if you don’t manage your time correctly. there’s people online that can explain how to manage your energy more than me so please go watch them instead lmfao
try your best to stay on your schedule. the more you push your tasks to this arbitrary tomorrow, the more you absolutely won’t do them.
honey, you need to bring a snack and a water bottle to those exams, you get like a 10 minute break that isn’t enough for the mental taxation (without representation) that happens on those exams. they’re brutal.
the classes themselves are not as bad you think. i promise. most of the time, you’ll actually have fun. and it’s really cool to be learning at a college level. so keep at it! the moment you hate something, the moment you begin to stop trying as hard and your grades start slipping. keep finding the next thing to delude yourself into enjoying (/hj).

things i wish i knew in my freshman year of high school
now that i’m a senior in high school i really wish i had someone to tell me these things!!
a little disclaimer: i went to a STEM high school which had a different school culture compared to most schools in my area. therefore, some of this is skewed towards my experience.
it’s not worth it to involve yourself in pointless drama. yes, your feelings are important. and YES, your boundaries are important. don’t let people walk over you, and stay out of any relationship drama. don’t start anything. because genuinely, it won’t matter. i promise you that you’ll look back at any situation you were involved in and think you were dumb.
you’re young, live and enjoy your youth. it’s hard to say that you should do what you want, because you genuinely can’t sometimes. BUT!! you should make every day something to be happy about.
study. i don’t care. study because it’ll help you study in college, if you’re going. study because you’re going to be happier with yourself. study because it’ll help you make a competitive application for safety schools and a good applicant in reach schools. and most of all, study because it helps you now.
you matter. yes, theres probably posters all over the goddamn place telling you that, but there’s a reason WHY they’re there. you matter, and your feelings do too. don’t waste time allowing yourself to be used.
make friends with upperclassmen. they’re not as scary as you think you are.
ASK FOR GODDAMN HELP!! go to help sessions, write down your questions, and trust that uneasy feeling you get when you don’t understand something. LISTEN to that feeling.
always always always understand what you did wrong. in any situation. when you’ve gotten an assessment back, go over what you did wrong. when someone tells you that they’ve been hurt by your actions, own up to it and ask them how you can make it up to them and change and learn. remember: you are young and learning how to live well with other people. again, you are young and learning how to live.
keep a record. a journal. whatever you want. whether it’s of creations you’ve made or the things you’ve experienced — nothing is too small or stupid to be recorded. you’ll look at it someday and you’ll laugh at yourself, but you’ll be able to forgive yourself easier.
sometimes you won’t make friends. that’s perfectly fine. it’s better to be around people that genuinely care about you rather than a bunch of friends that don’t. it’s perfectly okay to eat lunch alone, it’s perfectly fine to decline invitations, and it’s perfectly fine to prioritize yourself.
GO TO GODDAMN SLEEP. WHAT ARE YOU DOING. GO TO SLEEP LITERALLY RIGHT NOW.
drink tea.
sometimes you’ll be in love with your first ever love and you’ll feel so much. i don’t want to say it will end (because sometimes you won’t) but you need to forgive yourself if it does. take your time to heal. understand that you’re going through things that are breaking your soul into pieces, and move through life learning how to carry it. DON’T IGNORE IT. look at it in the face (when you’re ready to) and say “i forgive myself.” because you have to. there’s no time in the world not to love yourself.
take a mixture of classes that you like and ones that are required. if a class is required, only do the one that you’re interested in. for example: we have a choice of taking ap chem/ap physics/other science classes in junior/senior year. i picked anatomy because i don’t like chem or physics. DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY.
have that scary conversation about what you’re majoring in in college EARLY. that way, if your parents don’t support you, you have time to change your plans.
nothing will last forever.
read your textbooks.
your friends will help you if you ask them for help. get their help, whether it be notes you missed or a missing assignment.
your friends think about you. i can’t tell you how many times i’ve been in the gutters and one of my friends will mention that they missed me if i was sick, that they appreciate the notes i rewrite neatly and let them read, that they love when i make them laugh. so many people think of you — you just don’t know who does and what they’re thinking.
speaking of which, tell people what you like ab them, whether in passing as a stranger or as their friend. BE FRIENDLY. BE KIND. make someone’s day if you can.
realistically, try talking to people. ask them what grade they’re in if you’re not sure. say that you share a class. ask them what they like doing. start conversations, and you’ll have better connections
do your goddamn assignments. i can’t tell you the number of friends i have that fail classes, not because they find the class difficult but because they didn’t turn something in. it doesn’t matter if it’s late — anything is better than a zero.
please please please love yourself. love yourself enough to do your hair everyday; to find yourself so fucking pretty; to find that quiet spot to spend the morning it; to set boundaries that make you feel comfortable.
you don’t need a job if you don’t want one. you don’t have to drive and get your license as soon as you can. listen to me: you are NOT falling behind. do NOT rush yourself to “catch up” with everyone else. let life take its course, let yourself breathe, let yourself go slow. you are okay. YOU ARE OKAY. YOU ARE NOT FALLING BEHIND.
be real: the mention of adulthood is scary. it’s terrifying. have the courage to look at it in the face and say “i will deal with you today, even just a little.” and then you will.
you’re fourteen. you’re the smartest you’ve been been but also the stupidest person you’ve ever met. don’t take disdain from older students as hate. take it as advice from people who’ve experienced a little more life than you.
get off your phone the SECOND it gets to your head. you will love yourself more, promise.
yes, get in touch with your native language/parent’s language. give them and yourself that pathway to communicate. it’s also just a valuable skill.
getting a permit is easy.
it’s not the most carefree time — it’s the most emotionally turbulent time. keep being nice to yourself.

random study tips for the start of the school year
(or if you’re in the middle, or haven’t started — just whenever)
utilize the library! whether it be after school or before or even during the weekends, a quiet space away from your normal desk is a good way to keep things fresh. (also, it really helps with keeping yourself creative)
along with getting ready in the morning, do something that’ll calm you down. always remember to slow down! for me, it’s listening to jazz in the car. (laufey, anthony lazarro, etc. are all good! even lofi in the morning is nice. just find something.)
make a list of your wrong answers for each class. seriously. by this, i mean when you get homework, quizzes, and tests back, don’t just passively look at the right answers. make the effort to write the concept down, write down any definitions you weren’t sure of, and—most importantly—write down why you got it wrong. (if you missed something because you were careless you don’t have to add it.) it’s not a diss to yourself. think of it as a way to keep everything you need to work on in one place. it even can work as a review sheet of your most missed topics.
i know it’s been beat over your head, but use the SQ3R method for reading your textbook. there’s a reason why research has been put behind it.
okay, listen. don’t listen to music. i know it’s boring at first, but it’ll get you more focused—trust me. (also don’t use this tip if it just doesn’t work for you.)
have a solid, non-negotiable stop time. don’t go past it. mine is 21:00, and that’s when i stop studying and begin to wind down. health > school every. single. day.

i’m having this unique experience that i think maybe some people can relate to?
basically, yes, i was raised as a woman but for so long i felt so disconnected from that version of womanhood that was taught to me that i thought i could not possibly be a woman. however recently, i’ve begun to think otherwise. i’m much happier been perceived as a woman, but not in the traditional way that the patriarchy puts on you? more in the “i choose myself and by doing that my ways of expressing my femininity are my own and i love that” way? and i feel like maybe people can relate to that.
anyway, now as a person who spent a lot of their life trying to disconnect from being a woman, it feels like i’ve missed out on so many common experiences. like watching movies with friends or having that circle of women or catching up over coffee, etc etc. however, i’m also not afraid not give myself that anymore? me missing out is not a bad thing. that means i can do it for myself now.

how to deal with feelings (a guide by an autistic person)
first of all i’d like to say that this is just the way that i deal with them. there are general tips in here, but this is how i deal with my feelings. there is no one size fits all approach, but i hope this can be a starting point for you! another note is that these are methods to deal with your feelings alone. however, you could adopt these tips to include other people if need be !!
journal as soon as possible
the thing is my thoughts and my feelings feel nebulous until i define them with words, and even then it’s harder for me to articulate myself sometimes when i just can’t speak out loud. writing out what i am feeling really helps, especially for people like me who are fine with writing and a bit worse at speaking. it helps you get a grasp on what you’re feeling. if you prefer to talk, record yourself. sometimes when it’s easier for me to talk, i record voice memos, and some people like video recordings. whatever it is, get it all out as a cathartic release.
talk back to yourself
what i mean by this is basically respond to the journal entry. ask questions if needed. for example, “why do you think x way about yourself?” or “why did [x] event trigger you to feel this way?” what is hard is finding the cause when you are depressed or anxious. it can feel like it came out of nowhere, and sometimes that is the case. at those times, treat yourself with care and comfort/validate yourself instead. write down your responses in the margins of the first, as if you’re responding to yourself in real time. as an extra, more spiritual step, i take the time to affirm myself as well. be proud as well that you’re taking the time to take care of yourself.
allow yourself to go through the motions.
scream, cry—whatever it is you need to do to express the emotions. don’t be ashamed in needing to do so. get comfortable, put on your favorite movie, and wallow in those emotions until you’re ready to let go. a lot of people talk about detachment, which can be helpful if applied. however, if you’re unfamiliar or new to that technique (which you can do more research on) then take your time with it. it’s like another skill/habit you need to build up.
basic needs
when you’re upset it’s easy to lose sight of your basic needs. please drink water, take a shower if you can bare it, and eat your comfort food. brush your teeth if that’s all you can manage to do.

how self love works
self love is a habit. it’s a reminder. it’s not carved into our brains until we let it be and we build that habit. if you’ve ever read Atomic Habits, it’s all about getting over the initial obstacle of the effort for the long term result of loving who you are. it’s a learned skill, not inherent—especially when you’ve been deprived of your love and asked to build it yourself. unlearning the bad habit of not loving yourself is the same as learning how to.

finding closure is not always about forgiveness. sometimes, it is about understanding; it is about anger; it is about emotional release; it is about listening to mitski while writhing on the floor; it is about getting the goal you always wanted despite everything; it is about faith.

this is ur daily reminder that pain is immeasurable and can’t be quantified by anything — time or money — and that pain is different for every single person and it’s okay to be honest when you’re in pain and that you don’t deserve to be in it and there is no competition when it comes to it because we are all hurting in some way xx
