So general question - how are folks thinking about day school vs boarding school for the Roy kids?
I think what we know via the show/script/interviews is:
Kendall attended Buckley which is a k-9 school
Per "Prague" Roman attended St. Andrew's, presumably a reference to St. Andrew's-Sewanee School in Tennessee which is a 6-12 middle/high school (where Roman was probably a boarding student given location)
Alan Ruck has stated he thinks Connor was shipped off to boarding school for most of his educational life
Based on this, I think I had assumed Kendall and Shiv had attended day school and lived at home until college, but in reading some old interviews I came across the below video clip where Sarah mentions Shiv (or maybe all of the kids?) might have also attended boarding school for at least some portion of schooling. On a semi-related note, there's also this clip of Annabelle Dexter-Jones mentioning that Naomi attended a mix of boarding and day schools which may be semi-relevant just considering Naomi's in the same wealth bracket as the Roys (although probably not in the same social circles due to old v. new money, politics, and a few other things).
So I guess where I'm coming out on this is...maybe Shiv also attended boarding school? I can't find anything where Jeremy mentions boarding or day school one way or the other but I could see a world where (a) all the kids attended boarding schools or (b) if they didn't all attend boarding school, Kendall is the one Logan is least likely to allow out of his watch if he was already "troubled" in Logan's view but still rotating it all in my brain (and would be happy to chat about/hear others views)...
Clip of Sarah Snook mentioning boarding school below the cut for those interested:
Q:  Have you as an actor thought about what Shiv’s childhood was like or maybe even had explicit conversations with Jesse about what did shiv go through in her childhood until we meet her on screen?
A:  Yeah. Yeah, I mean, you sort of create a roadmap of imaginative kind of work in what their experiences would have been and what it is like to be shepherded around and farmed off to some – probably in boarding school overseas for a bit, or college overseas at least; or you know, holiday-house to holiday-house which none of them really feel like a home. I love that bit where she’s showing her dad all the houses and homes that they have and he just doesn’t recognize them. The monumental wealth that these people have which leaves them sort of lost and kind of displaced in the world, and especially if they don’t have a home, sort of family strength and foundation to call home.” (x)

the last of my thoughts on the homecoming au, the au where maedhros and maglor are taken back to tirion at the end of the war of wrath and proceed to be relentlessly abused by elves more interested in them being ‘normal’ than happy. it’s pretty much exactly as dark as you’d expect from that description, lots of medical/caretaker abuse towards the mentally ill, just a horrible situation in general. one last time, @sunflowersupremes wrote the original au this is an extrapolation from, and @outofangband listened to me blather on about this for ages and contributed lots of ideas of their own. part 1 is here, part 2 is here. this the last part, it isn’t quite as intense as part 2, but it’s a lot more hopeless. also there’s some off-screen torture
on the first post i made about this au, i got some comments to the effect of ‘oh this will only last until person x bails them out’
there were several suggestions - fingon, nerdanel, any of the ainur. it seems like there are a lot of people who’d want to get maedhros and maglor out of this nightmare
seems. these aren’t necessarily my usual interpretations of their characters, but for the purposes of this au i can easily imagine a finrod who already bore a grudge over the whole letting-their-younger-brothers-steal-his-kingdom incident and subsequently heard the version of the nirnaeth where the fëanorians left everyone else to die. he is the only other person in the palace who knew beleriand, and he loathes them so viciously he can barely stand to look at them. they’re lucky he doesn’t do worse
i can easily imagine a nerdanel who was already having trouble processing what her husband and sons did at alqualondë when eärendil and elwing told her every awful thing they’d done since in the span of half an hour. she smashed all their statues, burned all their gifts, and curled up sobbing in a ruined house, wondering why she was such a terrible mother her children grew into demons
and this isn’t long after that, that wound is still fresh. whatever vain hopes she held that the boys she loved were somewhere in there are shattered when she sees them, and they’re talking and laughing just like they did when they were young
like nothing had happened. like nothing had changed. like the monsters had always been waiting patiently for their chance to strike
(they just didn’t want her to see the things they’d become)
i can easily imagine a fingon who is blazingly furious with maedhros over the later kinslayings. he spends most of their only meeting railing at maedhros, and the apologia his caretakers offer up only makes him angrier
so does the fact that maedhros won’t defend himself, won’t even raise his voice. does none of this matter to him? did it ever?
(it does. but maedhros knows what will happen if he yells at his cousin, and he is just so exhausted)
fingon is eventually asked to leave. maedhros’ minders tell him that if he can’t keep his temper around their patient, they’re going to have to cut off contact until maedhros is in a better mental state. fingon snaps that that’s just fine by him, and storms off into the city, trying to hold back his tears
the ainur, now, the ainur would definitely drag them out of the palace and haul them up to the máhanaxar. finarfin’s managed to get as much out of eönwë
what would happen to them after that, eönwë refuses to say. finarfin suspects he doesn’t know, and none of the valar will until they’ve had a chance to actually, like, hold a trial
even so, it becomes pretty obvious to finarfin fairly early on that the noldor simply can’t give the brothers the help they need. it’s plain to see that they’re very unhappy and they’re recovering slowly if at all. whatever the valar decide to do with them, odds are good they’d end up in some permutation of elf afterlife therapy, with well-practiced carers and the family they’ve lost. for their sake, and the sake of the people around them, handing them over to the valar would clearly be the best option
except finarfin doesn’t. he keeps his nephews in his palace, where they break things and make messes and generally give their caretakers constant headaches. when asked why, he always talks about the soul-deep terror on maglor’s face when he asked him not to give them to the valar
he’s not lying about that. but he does have other motives
there’s lots of suppositions in finarfin’s reasoning. there’s every chance the valar would throw them into the deepest depths of mandos until the second music. there’s every chance maedhros would choose to disappear into the woods and never trouble court again
but if the valar do decide to send them to lórien with no limits on their movement, and if maedhros does still harbour nelyafinwë’s political ambitions...
the closest finarfin has gotten to admitting it, even to himself, is saying that the noldor have enough problems right now, they don’t need a succession crisis on top of everything else. sometimes he’ll joke about not wanting maedhros to set up another functionally autonomous military government out in the wilderness
but it’s hard to deny that a maedhros, free to act, with his head screwed on straight, could potentially be the single biggest threat to finarfin’s crown
not that he doesn’t want his nephews to get better! it’s heartrending to see the pain they’re in, he sincerely wants to see them happy
he’d just prefer them to be happy in a way that's... convenient
maedhros and maglor’s contact with the outside world is kept to a strict minimum and heavily monitored when it does happen. they’re only allowed to visit the public parts of the palace when their caretakers know exactly who’s going to be there and if they can be trusted to not make a fuss about the brothers’ presence
it’s all in the interest of keeping the peace, you understand. maedhros’ followers are difficult to handle at the best of times, if they somehow got it into their heads that the last of their lords were being held captive in the palace...
well, finarfin says over tea. maitimo can see the wisdom in not provoking a civil war, can he not?
(he will not bring death to the blessed realm again. not even if his last baby brother is rotting away to a shell, not even if he’s being smothered to death from the inside out. he will not, he must not)
(if he did, there would truly be nothing left but the monster)
and then, one day, maglor gets the chance to escape
his minders aren’t paying much attention to him, he’s been a lot quieter since they put the gag on him. he’s small and fast and good at sneaking around, by the time they notice he’s missing he’s already found a way out of the palace
he jumps out of a third-floor window, bites down the pain, and runs. he clears the grounds and disappears into the city
he makes for - he doesn’t know where. subconsciously, he navigates towards the craft guild districts, where his family’s staunchest supporters always were
except the city’s changed a lot since he was last loose in it, and before he knows it, he’s completely lost. he wanders the streets half in a daze, his raw nerves unused to the bustle and noise of it all. wherever he goes, people stop and start and turn away
finally someone calls him over. ‘hey, you want that collar off your neck?’
it’s a smith of some sort, he can tell that much. they’re smiling, welcomingly and without pity. he’s rushing over to them, nodding his head, before he can even think about
the trouble is, maglor doesn’t remember the faces of most of the people he saw in beleriand, but they all remember him
the trouble is, this smith was at sirion
back in the palace, who gets access to the brothers is very strictly controlled. which isn’t to say that nobody tries to hurt them; finrod tends to put the worst spin on things when he’s asked for advice, there’s all kinds of minor acts of sabotage, and they come across innocuous-seeming harmful objects more often than mere chance would seem to allow
but even their caretakers can tell that letting desperate revenge-seekers get near the brothers wouldn’t be particularly conducive to whatever recovery they’re hoping for. anyone who might randomly come across maedhros or maglor in a hallway is intensely vetted for ulterior motives, and while this process isn’t airtight it does filter out the most obviously malicious
and outside of that bubble, none of that applies. the smith does take maglor’s gag off, purely to hear him scream
soon enough, the palace guard tracks him down. they take him back to the palace, where he’s bandaged up and comforted and then, as a special treat, allowed to see his brother
(they’re kept apart more often than not these days. being around maglor makes maedhros agitated, being around maedhros makes maglor sullen. they’re just more cooperative when they’re alone)
maglor does the same thing he’s done every time he’s seen his brother for the past year, which is immediately bury his face in maedhros’ chest and shudder. it takes him a moment to remember he can speak now
‘we’re trapped’ he whispers. ‘we’re trapped’
because he was screaming for what felt like hours, and nobody came to help. as he was being carried back to the palace, he saw the scorn and the disgust in the passers-by’s eyes
there’s nobody who will shelter them outside the palace. there’s nowhere on this continent they can go
and that - that’s the end, in a way. maedhros remains stubborn and ill-tempered, never quite letting them forget he doesn’t want to be here and doesn’t like what they’re doing, but the fight goes out of him. he does what they tell him just as biddably as he did before they took his brother’s voice
maglor, surprisingly, takes a turn for the better. he starts acting cheerful again, doing everything that’s asked of him with a smile and a wink. he’s making excellent progress, his minders tell finarfin
(they don’t tell him what maglor looks like when the mask starts to crack)
finarfin is very pleased to hear that one of his nephews is finally starting to recover! it’s been a long, painful journey, but it looks like it’s all at long last working out
to celebrate, he decides to give maglor a gift he’s been holding onto for a while
he calls maglor into his office. the tension in his posture is a bit worrying, but his expression is all makalaurë, a casual, mildly disrespectful grin. he swans into the room, flounces into a chair, and asks what his uncle wants
finarfin praises him for all the progress he’s been making, and hands him a letter
it’s from elros
the first line is ‘how are you doing, you old bastard?’ it calls him a kinslayer six different ways in the first three paragraphs. it asks him how many people he’s stabbed since he got back. it closes off by wishing him some fun loud arguments with maedhros
finarfin was a little concerned maglor still not might be in the right emotional state for it, but the tightness bleeds out of his nephew’s frame as he reads. a couple of times he even bursts into snickering that sounds more genuine than any sound he makes in court
he finishes reading with a truly relaxed smile on his face. then he freezes, and looks up at finarfin
in a tiny, quiet voice, so unlike the way he talks nowadays, he asks, ‘may i write a reply?’
finarfin hates to take the wind out of his sails, but maglor deserves to know. ‘that letter is centuries old. i’ve been holding onto it until you were ready to read it.’ he shuts his eyes. ‘i’m afraid elros passed some time ago’
maglor’s head drops. the letter in his hands begins to shake. little whimpers escape his trembling body. finarfin walks over, places a hand on his shoulder. ‘i’m sorry, we -’
that’s not whimpering, finarfin realises. those are growls. his nephew’s head snaps up, face twisted with rage
maglor tries to tear finarfin’s face off -
and that’s all i have. these headcanons have been exhausting to write, i’ll clean them up and put them on ao3 in a bit, but not now, if for no other reason than it’s 3am. again. i hope these weren’t too incoherent. going to try to unbanjax my sleep schedule now

Testpilot 9-17-2021 Los Angeles
Tumblr media
This is a 2-hour audio recording of Testpilot at Exchange LA on September 17, 2021. The live set began around 12:23 AM the following day.
Rave Tapes · Testpilot 9-17-2021 Exchange LA
Testpilot. When deadmau5 goes hard.
I've seen deadmau5 many times before. The last time was a DJ set, also at Exchange LA, on July 4, 2021. That show was phenomenal. 2.5 hours of deadmau5 in an intimate venue with a top tier sound system - what more could you ask for? I tried recording that set as well, but a technical problem stopped the recording after only 20 minutes, a mistake I continue to regret.
Testpilot is often described as deadmau5's darker, more experimental, alter ego. As this was my first Testpilot show, I was curious to know what that description meant.
As soon as Joel fired up his mobile rig and transitioned from the last track by opener Lauren Mia, I quickly understood.
This wasn't a dj set. This was Joel triggering sequences, stems, and loops, probably from Ableton, in real time. The tracks weren't complete songs, per say, with a typical beginning, middle, and end. These were a series of rhythmic permutations, minimal techno, featuring infrequent vocals, scant melodies, dominated by a 4/4 kick at 130 beats per minute, undulating sub bass, and syncopated percussive hits. It's dance music in its rawest form - just the bare essentials required to cause a crowd to dance.
The beauty was in how Joel let the rhythms marinate for a while before adding or subtracting other parts. Hypnotic repetition creates space for dancers to "get into the groove" and allows tension to build before reaching the next drop and release.
Given how long deadmau5 has created music for live audiences, it's obvious he knows how to work a crowd. There was a definite contrast between Testpilot's raw beats and polished deadmau5 tracks. This was something quite different, and certainly welcome.
The audience got to witness Joel triggering sections on the fly using a couple midi controllers. One of the devices - a Novation Launchpad or something similar - was angled slightly toward the dancefloor so the audience could see the action. I'd say Joel was fingering those buttons for a good 60% of the show. One could tell he was hyper-focused, in the moment, and actively working to manipulate the soundscape. He easily earned his pay that night (he always does).
I'm sharing the recording almost two weeks after the event, which is a longer delay than usual. There were a couple reasons for this. First, I had to deal with the acoustic imperfections of the file. Exchange LA is a cavernous room, and the recording reflects that. All kinds of natural reverb muddied up the sound. It took some effort to remove an ever present low-end rumble without losing the kick and bass lines. Many hours were spent cleaning up the signal and getting it to sound somewhat decent. While it's not a perfect recording, it succeeds in conveying the vibe of the night and documents the tracks played.
The other reason for the delay was that I have real-life stuff to take care of, which sometimes takes priority. I wish I could devote 100-percent of my time to recording, editing, and sharing dance music sets. But the reality is that I have to balance Rave Tapes with other important aspects of life. The good news is that the music will get shared, eventually. Better late than never, as the axiom goes.
Moving forward, EDC Las Vegas - after being delayed for a year-and-a-half - is finally on the horizon. You can be sure Rave Tapes will be in attendance. If the past is any indicator of what will happen this year, you can expect some new gems to appear in the Rave Tapes stream. Consider this Eric Pryds set from Circuit Grounds 2018, or this historic surprise set by RL Grime in 2019. Which sets will be captured this year? Only time will tell.
On that note, please consider donating a few bucks to support the Rave Tapes mission. The cost of attending events like EDC isn't trivial. Also, I am constantly looking for ways to upgrade hardware and software to improve sound quality. If you appreciate what I'm doing, please let me know by contributing something. Everyone who donates will get a couple Rave Tapes stickers and a vintage rave flyer from my personal collection. Thank you, and enjoy!

Overwhelmed
TITLE: Overwhelmed
CHAPTER NO./ONE-SHOT: One-shot
AUTHOR: fanfictrashdump
ORIGINAL IMAGINE: After the Chitauri attack on New York, imagine Loki being sentenced to public service on Earth, specifically in aiding people who got hurt during the attack. His magic has been limited to only be enough to aid keeping Odin’s spell in place so he wouldn’t turn blue. His task is to help people with special needs, to do house chores, help them get around, do their grocery and keep them company while they recover. He is assigned to a girl who ended up blind after one of the Chitauri shot at her.
 +
Character is having an uncharacteristically moody week which makes Loki wonder whether or not they’re interested in him, anymore.
RATING: T
NOTES/WARNINGS: Um… so I did a thing… because these two would not let my brain live in peace until this was written. Language, mentions of psychological manipulation (I will kill that bastard in the future, I swear), one very confused boy with self-esteem issues, one very angsty girl with self-esteem issues, some intense making out, implied sexy times.
Related to I signed up for this,  I signed up for this, too & it was his idea.

The brief, annoyed mumbles weren’t what concerned Loki on that tepid, tense Saturday afternoon. It was the fact that the person he adored the most in the world was mumbling angrily to herself as she twisted in a well-rehearsed circle (if the slight worn out patch in the carpet was any indication) in front of the mirror. Actually, that wasn’t it, either. His chief concern was that she appeared to be frowning at her reflection with a judgmental look when he knew very well that she was blind.
So, to say that Loki was concerned was actually an understatement.
“What?” Charlie snapped, making him start. He shouldn’t have been surprised–Charlie was getting eerily good at predicting when he was nearby. That, and this had not been the first time she had snapped at him this week.
“Nothing, sweetheart. Just watching you,” he replied easily, leaning against the doorframe to watch her resume her “inspection”.
“Ugh. Lord only knows why you would,” she sneered, smoothing a hand down the front of the black and gold floral dress she had on.
Loki sighed.
While Charlie had her occasional bad day now and again, brought on by frustration at not accomplishing a new skill or task, her moods were usually resolved by a tight hug and a pep talk. He might even bribe her with mint chocolate chip ice cream, as a last resort. Her moods, however, had never lasted this long. Nor had she ever actively tried to avoid him as much as she had this week. Some tired demon in the back of his head taunted that she was bored of him and he had to fight to keep it quiet.
Surely, that wasn’t the case, right? He had to believe that Charlie cared for him enough to inform him when she decided that they were through and not just snap at him until he left. Some days it was easier to convince himself. Others, he had to remind himself that her anger or frustration was not about him.
“Why would you say that?” His tone was gentle, and he allowed himself a few steps into the bedroom towards her. He pushed the sleeves up on his white button-up before he crossed his arms.
“I look awful.” She did a quarter-turn and turned her head as if she was glancing over her shoulder, her hazel eyes straying over the entirety of the mirror at her level. Loki swallowed the automatic ‘how can you even tell?’ that was poised and ready on his tongue. He, thankfully, did not have the opportunity to put his foot in his mouth, for she doubled down on her statement. “I’m fat.”
Loki rolled his eyes, chuckling. “You have a plentiful food source, how truly tragic,” he agreed sarcastically.
Charlie scoffed, throwing her hands up in exasperation. “Of course you wouldn’t understand. Thanks, Loki. You’re a real help.” She stomped away towards the en suite. She caught her leg on the very edge of the bed and stumbled, but quickly righted herself back to her path. If the collision hurt, she did not show it.
“Oh, come on!” Loki started after her. “Charlotte, dear–” She slammed the door when he was just shy of the threshold. He thanked his lucky stars that his reflexes were still relatively fast for a mortal, or else his face would be in a world of pain. He bit back a growl of frustration, knowing she would misunderstand his vexation with feeling powerless with vexation with her. That certainly wasn’t the case, he just tired of feeling so utterly useless.
Useless was the correct sentiment. He was truly unsure as to why she was upset or why she had taken arms against her figure, of all things. Charlie was more active than half of New York City, and she ate nothing but carefully prepared meals, as he was hyper-worried about her falling behind in her nutrition. So, maybe he occasionally overcorrected for those three weeks nearly a year ago that she had sought to starve herself. And maybe there was an extra few pounds on her waist that weren’t entirely necessary–but how he adored them. Her body was no less distracting when she settled into his side on the sofa or allowed him to rest his head on her lap while she toyed with his short, shaggy locks. The only thing that kept him in check was his very suspect grip on his self-control.
“Love,” he said in a plea, pressed against the wood of the door, on hand on the knob. “I don’t understand what I’ve done wrong. Truly.” There was sniffling at the other side of the door and Loki’s heart ached. “Please. What have I done? I swear to you, I’ll do anything–”
“Just hurry up and break up with me so we can both get on with our lives!”
Whatever calmness remained within him had evaporated. The doorknob jiggled in vain a few times before he managed to force the door with a well-placed shove. Charlie was sitting in the large sunken tub in the corner of the room, face obscured by her curls, head bowed. She hadn’t even flinched at the loudness that accompanied his entrance.
“I am well and truly baffled as to what you’re talking about, sweetheart,” he whispered, clambering over the edge of the bathtub and sinking in across from her. His fingers, skimmed her jawline on both sides, thumbs making lazy circles on her cheeks. He gently lifted her head, brushing away stray tears marring her face. Loki understood that she could not see the sincerity in his face, but there was something about forcing her eyes upwards that always seemed to convey his sentiments and push them through her restless mind. “Why would I ever want to be apart from you?”
“Because you don’t like me. Because I’m fat. And boring. And–”
“How could you be so–” He stopped himself just short of saying blind, but her eyes shot up, fiery and hard, regardless, “–wrong?” He pulled a face to himself, knowing he had just landed himself in hot water, but there were more pressing matters. “You know that for a fact, do you? That I don’t like you?” She nodded in his hands and he had to resist making a cooing noise at her adorableness. “Why do you think that, Charlie? Help me understand.”
Loki wasn’t sure what he was expecting, but Charlie turning a rather deep (and fetching, he might add) shade of red was definitely not it. She caught her lower lip between her teeth and held it tightly clenched, avoiding speech.
“I’m sorry to ask you this question, but… does this have to do with Ben?”
“No!” She snapped, defensively and Loki had to take a calming breath at the very apparent lie. “A little. He didn’t like it when I got chubbier, either, so–”
“I’m going to kill him,” he said matter-of-factly, already half-way out of the bath before Charlie reached out for his hand and held it in a vice. The frustration was beginning to get to him, eating him alive and corroding him like acid. “Why would you think I had a single thing in common with that cur?” He asked, perhaps a little sharper than he ought to, as she flinched back. His whole demeanor untensed, but he remained anxious. “Sorry, sorry,” he added in a whisper, kneeling down in front of her. “I shouldn’t’ve have raised my voice. I’m sorry. Sorry,” he purred, brushing her hair back with gentle fingers until she relaxed into his chest. “I’m just very confused and, frankly, a little hurt. How could you ever think that I don’t want to be with you?”
“You never…” Charlie trailed off, a heavy sigh sagging her shoulders.
A million permutations of the phrase shuffled through his mind, each one worse than the last. He never was human enough? He never was good enough? He never did enough to fix everything in her life he had wronged? He never told her how much he loved her? He pushed the thoughts aside, going nowhere far too fast for his own good.
“I never…?”
“You know… that…”
“Norns, I wish you came with a dictionary.” His complaint came out like a prayer before he sunk his lips into her plentiful curls to press a kiss there. “Darling, if I knew, I daresay this conversation would be moot.” Loki tilted her head back up to him to stroke her cheek. “Darling?”
A second later, he had lost purchase on the slippery bottom of the tub and barely caught himself before he tumbled backwards. Charlie’s mouth was firmly attached to his own with such fervor that he could barely contain the groan that left his throat at the contact. His fingers itched at the hem of her dress before he managed to convince his arms of moving upwards to rest on her waist. Her hands, however, had fallen to the waistband of his trousers and were toying with the button of his fly. His brain was very quickly going fuzzy at the promise of…
Oh. That.
It took more effort than he was willing to admit to wrench himself away from her sweet-tasting lips. “Charlie, please tell me all of this is not based on the fact that we haven’t slept together.” The way she froze on top of him was answer enough, but, Gods, if she had even a glimpse inside his mind… “I have never wanted anyone more desperately than you,” he murmured against her neck and kissed her there. “But, Charlotte, I hugged you while petting your hair for a little too long the other day, and you cried for over an hour. I do not wish to overwhelm you.” He smiled to himself and he was sure she could feel it against her caramel flesh. “Because, trust me, I want to do so much more than hug you and pet your hair.”
“Are you sure? I still think it’s because I’m all tubby,” she mumbled, her pout very pronounced.
Loki chuckled. This particular rumor he could put to rest at once. One hand glided onto her hips barely resisting pressing onto her with his own. The other tangled in her hair and gripped gently, baring her neck for him to kiss before he nipped at her pulse. She was warm and soft, and the scent of oranges filled his nose intoxicatingly. “Does this feel like I don’t want you?” He husked, and Charlie shuddered, hands opening and closing into tight fists in a nervous fidget.
“Too much! Too much!” She yelped just as Loki had half-bucked into her.
He immediately released her, bracing back on one arm as the other made sure she didn’t slip as she made a hasty retreat off of him. There was a lazy, self-satisfied smile on his face at the ruby red flush that was covering all of her exposed skin.
“Fine. I get your point.” Her voice trembled as she spoke, only drawing attention on the delicate swelling of her lips and the goosebumps rising on her flesh. “I’m going to smack that smirk off of your face, I swear to God, Loki.”
“I’m not smirking, darling. How could I ever?” He responded in a feigned offended tone as his grin widened.
Rolling her eyes, Charlie slipped out of the tub, leaving a giddy Loki staring up at her form. The skirt of her dress swished around her hips and legs with every movement as if by magic. She looked so marvelous and now he had the chore of coming back down from his rush. With a sigh, he fell onto his back and turned his eyes to the ceiling, praying whatever deities were feeling particularly giving for the strength of will to remain as steadfastly patient as he had been without going entirely mad.
His answer fell from the heavens at once.
Onto his lap.
In the form of a black and gold floral dress that he could have sworn a moment ago was…
With a start, he scrambled to peer over the lip of the bath, catching just a glimpse of toasted, tanned skin, sashaying off into the bedroom. The floor between them both littered in the remainders of her outfit, down to the golden necklace she had been wearing around her neck.
Loki stared dumbly for a full minute, before his arms and legs were once again connected to his brain, if a little disjointedly. He climbed out of the bath, one foot getting caught on the lip and causing him to take a spill onto the floor with a pained grunt. Beyond the door Charlie giggled at the commotion and he remembered why he was in such a rush, in the first place. Loki scrambled off the floor, clumsily to join her a second later. Perhaps she wasn’t the only one getting overwhelmed.

The Plights of Force Visions: Chapter 1
Rating: T for Depictions of Violence and Injury
Summary: Obi-Wan Kenobi has many infamous force abilities. He is most notorious for his connection with animals, though his silver tongue and acrobatic leaps are close behind. Lesser known are his visions, frequent and pungent. These are the tales of a lifetime of seeing too much.
read it on AO3 here
Chapter 1: Initiate Kenobi
As a youngling, Obi-Wan's creche master often noted the random fluctuation in his mood. One moment he was his usual mild-tempered self, playing with Quinlan, Bant, and Garen, reading, or maybe listening to music. The next, he was cross or withdrawn. It was something that concerned Master Vant, but while his mood swings were random, they were never indications of truly sinister emotions. His "negative" states were only ever to the extent of the youngling being a little bit grumpy-- never angry. She figured it was just growing pains, mood swings as he grew older and hormones began to surge.
Then one day, Master Vant was watching Obi-Wan and Quinlan spar in a lightsaber training class. Quinlan was much larger than ten-year-old Obi-Wan, but the boy excelled in lightsaber and acrobatics, which more than made up for the size deficit. The boys were living up to their skills, engaging in a quick-paced spar that was going on fifteen minutes of continued combat. She had half a mind to yield them for a break, but their creche mates (as well as a few curious younglings and padawans who wandered in to watch the commotion) were cheering them on. Master Vant saw the beads of sweat that dripped down both the boy's foreheads and soaked their training clothes, but she also saw the grins on both of their faces. Their mutual feelings of pride and accomplishment were palpable through the Force (something she would have to talk to them about later... Jedi do not dwell on pride, only revel in humility).
And then Quinlan swung his lightsaber sloppily, which Obi-Wan easily dodged and was able to knock his opponent off his feet and onto his back. Slippery from perspiration, Quinlan's lightsaber went flying out of his hand, clattering at the feet of Bant Eerin.
The room erupted in cheers. Padawans and younglings alike lept up, some cursing that their predictions of the outcome had been wrong and others cheering for Obi-Wan. But through the commotion, Master Vant felt a warning through the Force, and the next moment the yells of glee turned to panic.
She flew to her feet, trying to remain calm as she assessed the room looking for the source of distress that was pulsating through the Force. Her eyes finally focused in on Quinlan still sitting on the group looking frazzled, a limp Obi-Wan lying in his arms, face down.
"Clear the way!" Master Vant yelled, and the younglings parted for her to rush to the sparring ring. Quinlan looks stunned, sputtering over his words.
"He was... he was fine, Master Vant. Went to help-- he gave me his hand... Master Vant, he just went white, and it was like he wasn't there anymore-- and he fell forward."
She lays a comforting hand on the boy's back as she slips Kenobi's limp body into her own arms, flipping him over to look at his face in the process. "Quinlan, it's okay, it was not anything you did." she looks up at Bant, who is standing close by watching wordlessly. "Bant, my dear, go get a Healer. Swiftly. Garen, go with her." The two creche-mates nod and follow her instructions. Master Vant looks back down at the boy cradled in her lap.
His face is pale white as Quinlan had described, forehead slick with a cold sweat. Most concerning of all, his eyes remain open, staring blankly into nothingness. Vant presses two fingers against his pulse point, relieved that she can feel his heart beating rhythmically-- albeit, rapid, but beating. She drags her fingers up his neck to brush the hair slick against his forehead back, noticing his temperature is elevated, maybe even feverish.
Master Vant has seen this before. It's fairly rare, but she knows the signs. She closes her eyes, brushing up against the mind of Obi-Wan Kenobi.
She can feel turmoil. A little bit of fear and sadness. But she is surprised to find his shields are surprisingly strong for a boy of his age and experience. She can't see the vision that has rendered him unconscious or find a way to pull him out of it.
"What is happening to him?" Quinlan says, his hand still holding the limp hand of his sparring partner.
"A vision, Initiate Vos. Just give him time to come out of it."
_____
When Obi-Wan awakes, he realizes he didn't remember falling asleep. As his sensitive eyes adjust to the brightness of daylight, he realizes he is laying in the Hall of Healing, a needle in his arm and pain in his head like he has never felt before. Groaning, he sits up, finding that this was a horrible plan. He is suddenly bent over the side of the bed, trying his best to aim the vomit forcing its way from his stomach into the tray on the side table, but ultimately being unsuccessful.
A hand is on his back, rubbing circles as the entirety of his lunch exits his body. Obi-Wan recognizes the Force presence of his creche-master Vant.
"It's okay, Obi-Wan, dear," she says, sending soothing feelings through the Force. "A common side effect of visions."
"Visions?" Obi-Wan rasps, dry heaving a few times before laying back into the soft pillow.
"Yes, you had a vision after your sparring session. You gave everyone quite a scare."
Obi-Wan inhales sharply, suddenly remembering everything. Battling with Quin, the smell of mint, and then everything became hazy.
Then he was transported. No longer in the training room with Quin and all his friends, but in a large field. It was a grassy field, none that he has ever seen on Coruscant or any training trip. In the distance, he saw smoke, and something told him he needed to check it out. So he walked through the hilly terrain until the sound of yelling made him stop dead.
"Go, go, go! The detonators are about to go off!"
Obi-Wan broke into a run, reaching the top of the hill before he was nearly blown off his feet. A small village lay at the foothill, smoke billowing from numerous buildings. Kids ran from the village with blasters and bags full of detonators strapped to their bodies. Obi-Wan recoiled in horror.
"For the Young!" one yelled. An explosion erupted, causing the ground beneath Obi-Wan to shake. He dropped to his hands and knees.
"For peace!" the chorus responded. With his hands on the ground, he could hear the vibrations of many people running. Right toward him. Obi-Wan looked up and was met by calm blue eyes staring back at him. The boy is thin and fairly tall, his chin-length auburn hair whipping in the wind. Obi-Wan sucks in a breath. Behind the ear of the boy is a thin braid that barely reaches his shoulder. A Padawan?
There was a familiarity to the boy. Something Obi-Wan couldn't quite put his finger on, but maybe the boy was a youngling, a few years older.
And then he woke up with a horrid headache and an upset stomach. Master Vant, rubbing his back.
"I remember," Obi-Wan says softly. He can still smell the smoke and hear the debilitating bang of the explosion. He looks at Master Vant. "I saw kids, Master. They had guns and bombs. A village exploded."
Master Vants looks calm, but Obi-Wan can see the subtle signs of her alarm. She puts a hand over Obi-Wan's. "I have never had visions, Obi-Wan. But what I do know is what the Force reveals to us is not fixed. The future is fluid, and there are billions of permutations that could happen in reality."
"An understatement, billions is," a raspy, croak-like voice rings out. Obi-Wan instantly recognizes Grand Master Yoda as he jumps up onto the end of the bed. The green Jedi Master smiles at Obi-Wan. "More like it, trillions is."
"Master Yoda," Obi-Wan says in awe.
"Initiate Kenobi," Yoda says, sitting down cross legged. "Visions I hear you had." Obi-Wan nods. "Experienced this before have you?"
"Well... maybe? Nothing as strong as this. Just random snippits of things. Moments where I see or hear or smell something and then it happens later." Obi-Wan can feel Master Vant staring at him.
"Obi-Wan... you never told me."
He turns to his creche master sheepishly. "Sorry Master Vant. Honestly, I didn't think it was a big deal. I looked up on the holonet that sometimes people have these things before migrianes so I just thought it was that."
"Tell your creche master when you are not feeling well, you should do," Yoda adds, humming in agreement with Master Vant. "As for visions, counsel you we will. Help you learn what to do."
They discussed having him meet with various other Jedi Masters who also have had visions. And to see a mind healer to discuss his visions, which he is not thrilled about. It interferes with his usual saber practice with Garen!
He's gone almost five years on his own without help with these. He knows how to push through them, recognize when he smells the mint he needs to find somewhere to sit alone. (It's quite convenient when in the Jedi Temple and there's meditation rooms around every corner.) Obi-Wan also knows a cup of warm tea with honey is a good way to ease the headache, and he's getting better at lifting his grumpy moods.
He knows how to handle these visions. He doesn't need this spread around to every master in the order... what master would want to choose a padawan who could pass out at any moment? A shiver runs down Obi-Wan's spine. Yes, he can handle it.
______
The council meeting is nearing the end and Mace is ready to retire for the evening. There has been a lot on the docket for today and he is reaching the point where everyone is starting to sound like Yoda.
"Lastly," Adi Gallia announces, looking at the long agenda for the day. "Initiate Kenobi."
"Visions he has," Yoda says. "Frequent visions."
"How frequent?" Mace asks, intrigued. He heard about the Healers being called to the youngling training room but much of the details were not discussed formally.
"His creche master has been monitoring him this week and..." Adi Gallia looks up from the data pad. "Master Vant reports at least six this week alone."
The council falls silent. Visions on their own are rare, even short ones. For an initiate so young to have so many it's practically unheard of.
"The Force seems to be calling our attention to something," Mace says, shaking his head. "We just need to figure out what."

You touched on a little bit about Rio being OOC throughout season two; not just the finale. Can you go into detail because that’s something I’ve been feeling for a very long time, but it seemed like the fandom was too blinded by Brio to really catch on.
Yes, sure! This is something I’m pretty passionate about and since it’s obvious now that the show intends to go full-steam ahead without ever acknowledging what came before, I think it’s pointless waiting for a magical reveal that would make it all make sense.
There are a bunch of things that aren’t necessarily OOC – it’s just that they come out of nowhere/are inconsistent. Which is the biggest problem with Rio’s character. In making Beth the centre of everything in S2, the show made Rio a side character in her story instead of a person in his own right. That complicated matters because he was already serving a different purpose: the entire plot. So now instead of a person, we have a plot device that has to be attracted to Beth. So his scenes have to do either one or the other – but then we also have the wildcard of Mr Manny Montana who just comes in and acts his little ass off (did you see that interview where he says he runs through at least ten different permutations of playing Rio in every scene before settling on one?!) and really tries his best to bring a personality, a humanity and a life to Rio. And I think those three things are integral to why he has absolutely no consistency in S2, because they’re all pulling him in different directions.
But then there are some OOC things, like the nightmare of 2x06. If there were a competition for most pointless episode of S2, 6 and 7 would be neck and neck. We see Rio with another woman, which is fine on its own. The problem is that, in episode 5, the moment Beth and Rio were talking about money, he brought up the bathroom break. Then again in episode 6, Beth’s discussing money and Rio moves the conversation to sex. The episode in general (via Ruby’s speech) also tried to paint him as this absolute fuckboy and it just… didn’t sit right with me. Besides a few offhand comments here and there and the way his eyes just… do that, he’s never been overt with Beth before, and certainly never used their attraction for his own gain. In fact, at the beginning of episode 4, he was about to take off and leave all his money with her so she could be something! These are not the actions of a fuckboy. Plus, I don’t think any of us have to be reminded that Beth went to his bar and led him into the bathroom, not the other way around. He’s also the one who asks for a label on their relationship. In episode 9, he looks like a man who knows he’s finally walking into a relationship and he wants it.
Tumblr media
Which brings us to 2x10/2x12. It really upset me that Rio absolutely should’ve been fuming after the way Beth treated him – but instead, in episode 10 they had him laugh off her blocking his number and save her from going to jail. Remember when I said he has to serve as the plot? That’s what happens here, and it’s unbearable because it means his anger has to wait until episode 12, which by that time seems unrelated and thus bizarre.
Her having sex with him then quitting followed immediately by him refusing to help her and saying she’s just work would’ve been so good. It would’ve actually made Beth understand that what she did hurt him. (And if she’d said “That’s what I am to you? Work?” and he’d responded with “That’s how you treated me”?? GOLD.) Instead his characterisation looks like this: gets dumped -> helps her escape Feds -> sends her body parts -> lets her follow him around for a day -> fluffily plays 21 Questions with her -> won’t look at her and doesn’t care if she goes to jail.
Tumblr media
It makes him seem like an insane person because they jerk him around as the plot desires, which of course is never truer than the finale. Thank goodness for Manny Montana, because the calibre of his performance actually somehow manages to string all these crazy moods into one cohesive person.
Also, I think it’s important to point out that Rio’s ever-changing moods could so easily be explained if he had POV scenes. One of the most important to me would’ve been in 2x06 (nightmare episode, this). He’s waiting on Beth’s table and he looks like he’s had a day. The man’s head is hanging between his arms and, instead of just popping inside, he sat there and waited until she at some point (??) would catch sight of him. I think he’d had to face shit all day, possibly as a direct result of what Beth did (we never find out how he realised the pills were missing, but based on the scene where he delivered the first car to that woman, it was probably after clients had gotten them, and I’m guessing they were… not happy). Seeing Rio have to deal with that and put out those fires all day could’ve been not only interesting, but also very insightful. Suddenly he doesn’t just seem randomly aggressive and horrid to Beth (his dialogue to her there is, to me, some of the most hurtful things he’s ever said to her), but his mood and actions have purpose behind them. He’s a person.
But, remember, he’s not allowed to be one. He’s just a side character in someone else’s story.
And round and round we go.

Hey witches! It’s been a while, I am back with this post for all you beginners out there! Hope you like this
DIVINATION 101
WHICH WAY IS RIGHT FOR YOU?
Divination is one of the most-practiced branches of magick. Even non-magickal folks will sometimes flip a coin to make a decision, or crack open a fortune cookie with more than idle curiosity. As a student of the magickal arts, it's likely that you dabbled in divination as one of your first forays into the Mysteries. Skillful divination puts you in touch with both your inner knowing and external wisdom that will help you along your path.
But many beginners ask the question, Where do I start? How do I navigate the maze of stones and bones and cards and tea leaves and other options confronting me? In this article, I'll discuss five common methods of divination: Pendulums, scrying, Runes, Tarot, and freestyle reading. I'll then put on my Professor Trelawney glasses and peer into your soul to recommend the best method for you. Each recommendation is based on your skills and proclivities--and just for fun, your star sign.
Keep in mind that no single method is necessarily better than another. (Also remember, it's okay to practice more than one method!) I don't buy into the myth that says that a reader who uses Tarot cards is somehow less talented than a reader who doesn't. The goal is to find the best expression for your natural psychic gifts. Starting with the right tool(s) will accelerate learning and cut down on frustration.
Pendulum Dowsing
A pendulum is basically a weighted string that is held in one hand. The user (or dowser) observes the subtle movements of the pendulum to gain information about a question, object, or environment. Put another way, dowsing uses your physical body to express phenomena that are detected by the psychic senses. (For an easy introduction to pendulums, see this article.)
One of the advantages of pendulum dowsing is that it requires very little investment of time or money to get started. There's nothing to memorize. You don't need a book, chart, or specialized equipment. You can dowse with a necklace, a fishing bob, even a teabag! What you do need is unwavering concentration and a good dose of body-based intuition.
Swing into dowsing if you:
Favor a simple, "yes or no" answer to your questions
Can usually trust your gut feelings
Excel at grounding and centering your personal energy
Want a tool that's compact and convenient
Identify as a kinetic learner/thinker (more than verbal or visual)
Pendulum powerhouses: Virgo, Cancer, Aquarius, Taurus
Runes
The Runes are both an archaic Norse alphabet and a set of powerful magickal symbols. The 24 letters of the Elder Futhark are the most common form of runic divination. They are inscribed on tiles of bone, stone, or wood and shuffled by the Rune reader. They are traditionally a masculine tool associated with the deity Odin. Each Rune has at least three meanings: A phonetic sound, a literal meaning, and a figurative or abstract meaning. From narrowest to broadest interpretation, the Rune called Berkana could stand for the letter "B", the Birch tree, birth, creativity, or the feminine principle.
Despite this apparent complexity, the Runes are famous for giving it straight. They have their own personality, and are never hesitant to point out folly or disaster. Modern readers often try to moderate the voice of the Runes by employing multi-tile, Tarot-style readings. But the purest way to consult the Runes is by drawing just one Rune stone--a "take it or leave it" proposition that doesn't leave any room for waffling.
One more thing: The Runes are a special treasure of Odin--legend has it that He hung on the World Tree for nine days and nights to receive the secret alphabet. The Runes reward devoted study and shy away from dilettantes. To truly unlock their secrets, be prepared to make some sacrifice reminiscent of (though not necessarily equal to) the God's own.
Take up the Runes if you:
Don't mind receiving answers that are harsh or blunt
Are willing to study or meditate on the symbols to receive their wisdom
Rune-meisters: Scorpio, Aries, Capricorn, Sagittarius
Scrying
Scrying encompasses such time-honored practices as gazing into crystals, water, or fire. Along with dream interpretation, it is one of the oldest forms of divination. The term comes from the archaic word "descry," meaning "to make out dimly."
The scryer goes into a relaxed, meditative state and gazes into a bright or reflective object. (A popular choice is a bowl filled with water or a crystal ball illuminated by candlelight.) The resulting information is usually in the form of imagery, but some scryers may also hear sounds or feel sensations during a session. With any luck, the scryer's visions will shed some light on the question or situation at hand.
Successful scrying does require a certain amount of natural ability. Some beginners gaze for long hours and experience only frustration. But anyone who is able to have visions will find their skills developing with practice. Focus improves, images intensify, and interpreting the visions becomes easier for the practiced scryer.
Try scrying if you:
Are a visual thinker (artist, designer, daydreamer)
Have experienced psychic dreams or spontaneous visions
Are drawn to sparkly or reflective objects
Enjoy trance and meditative states
Have knowledge of dream lore and symbols
Super scryers: Pisces, Gemini, Scorpio, Cancer
Tarot
It's no secret that I judge the Tarot to be (probably) the finest divination method ever created. It bridges the gap between intuition and knowledge. As a consummate narrative tool, Tarot dovetails with our human tendency to tell stories about ourselves. A few random cards can illustrate the past, present, and future of any drama, along with its stars and its supporting cast.
Still, Tarot's not for everyone. It's a complex method (or can be) and often throws hippie-dippy, purely-intuitive types a curveball with its 78 cards and nearly infinite permutations.
Here's a secret: Invest as much or as little study time as you want. Unstudied beginners can still get satisfactory-to-great results by responding to the imagery on the cards. People with a head for facts and correspondences are great at teasing out additional meaning from a spread. But readers who can integrate both their left- and right-brain functions are predisposed to become Tarot adepts.
Tend toward Tarot if you:
Are drawn to art, literature, history and mythology
Have a good memory and make connections easily
Are a natural storyteller
Welcome complex or ambiguous answers
Are both creative and analytical, and able to balance these traits
Tarot superstars: Gemini, Sagittarius, Libra, Virgo
Nothing at All
Some readers don't use any tools at all. Instead, they rely on some combination of gut instincts, energetic perception. They listen carefully for psychic signals from their body and
inner voice. Empty-handed readings can be done for yourself or others.
The potential pitfalls are obvious: If you come up blank, there's no real starting place for the reading. (Struggling readers often resort to cold reading tactics or self-help cliches rather than real information.) Then there's the problem of bias: Without external tools guiding you, you're more likely to let your personal opinions and preconceptions color the reading. Good communication skills are essential to this type of reading. Many talented readers fall flat because they can't articulate what they're seeing or feeling.
Kick it freestyle if you:
Are very sensitive to energy (and good at putting your feelings into words)
Can easily put aside your biases during a session.
Find divination tools distracting
Are a natural healer who holds others' best interests at heart
Have the confidence to deliver a reading without tools for backup
adapted from Grove and Grotto
Unencumbered wonders: Aquarius, Aries, Pisces, Taurus

The C&Me Report: Dispatch #   1
Author’s Forward
This is a work of friction, the turbid spew of a diseased imagination.  The characters, events, location, time of day, and yes even the fucking weather are all made up - except when they aren’t.
That the submissive in the story maybe resembles someone in my past life is a bizarre coincidence that you shouldn’t read anything into.  The rumor that I may have based the -  selfish? disgusting? can we settle on sick? - narrator on myself is an unfortunate misunderstanding.  I am a considerate, thoughtful, kind, compassionate, altruistic, gentle, empathetic, loving soul - and I swear the wrath of a banshee working off a seven day drunk upon anyone who says different.
I hope you enjoy what I think is a novel approach to the old in-out.  For those of you who prefer a more traditional 3-step narrative of the form:
boy meets girl (or whatever gender permutation gets you going)
 one paragraph (preferably less)
 boy fucks girl
this just ain’t gonna work for you.  Seriously.  But, if you choose to ignore this warning, for fuck’s sake don’t whine about it afterwards.
One final note: if you do make it to the end, and your cursor is a short click away from registering one star, you should know that the banshee gets pissed off rather easily these days - just sayin’.
Happy trails.

I have an ethical dilemma that I’m hoping that you can help me with.
Whether you come at it from a moral or legal perspective, these days non-consensual sex is kind of frowned upon.  The MeTooers are clear: she has to freely say “yes”.  Sounds easy, but sometimes Easy Street is paved with potholes.
Let’s start with the seemingly obvious: “yes” doesn’t get you off the hook if you mention that you’ve got proof that could have her swinging in Sing Sing. Nor, for that matter, any persuasive argument that includes an “or else I will … “ clause.  But what if it’s “or else I won’t”?
For example, you have front row tickets to the hot show that she’s dying to see.  Without a promise of action for afters, you won’t take her.  “Maybe (fill in her best friend’s name) is interested…?”  I think we might need a new category, “technically consensual but the guy’s a douchebag”.
Also obviously, if she’s drunk, her “yes” doesn’t mean shit.  But what if she’s sober, in fact hasn’t had a drink all day.  And she needs one, badly, sort of the way that after holding your breath for two minutes you need air, because she’s an alcoholic.  Sadly she’s broke, has nothing left to pawn, and has already been to the Plasma Donation Center twice this week.  Let’s say she loves bubbly and you have a bottle of White Star on ice.
If, under those circumstances, you tell her, “no nookie no party”, you know damn well that you’re going to get laid. (Pro tip: one glass, then sex, and only then finish the bottle).  You can get all moral on me, but she’s gonna do what it takes to get a drink, and if that’s by blowing somebody in the liquor store’s parking lot, oh well.  I’m thinking why not me, instead of some jerk who’s gonna sub a store-brand asti?
Seriously, I’m looking for feedback, let me know what you think.
BTW, I wouldn’t trade sex for a drink, I’m not that kind of asshole, and this isn’t that kind of story.  Rather, it’s actually cannabis that she wants, and I’m much worse of an asshole.  You see, I’m a sex addict, sub-category control freak, and I’ve been waiting patiently for a long time.
*          *          *
C called, Lydia was dead.  Apparently she passed out and knocked her 151 into a candle.  I hadn’t heard anything from C, hence nothing about Lydia, for about five years, but this seems less like news than the fulfillment of the inevitable.  Though on second thought, that she made it that long is impressive.
When she called, she was upset.  Not because they were friends - nobody was friends with Lydia, she saw life as 100% transactional.  No, C was upset because she was on her way to score reefer, “and I’d already given her my last $60” … could I help her?
“Sure no problem”, I told her, answered by a huge sigh of relief.  “I’ve got that much cash in my wallet, come by and get it - and don’t worry about paying me back”.
Oops.  Not exactly what she was fishing for.  “Ah, do you have any weed that I could have?”
Long.  Fucking.  Silence.  It’s been five years since I’d talked to her last, the day we broke up over - surprise! - her drug and alcohol problem.
“Uh, Roc…”
“Let’s do this: come over for the $60.  Let’s at least get you covered on that, then you can score somewhere else.  I’ll think about the other”.
A little while later she’s on my sofa, smoking a pipe.  I have the cash and a small container in front of me.  “This is for you”, and I hand her the bills.  “You can also have this - BUT - one time only, never again.  This is about a week's supply, you can score something in that time.  Are we agreed - never again?”
Two things that I need to clarify - a week’s supply for me, if she’s on a roll, is probably about a 4 hour supply for her.  AND - if it gets them their fix, an addict will tell you anything that they think you want to hear.
So of course, she was absolutely in agreement.  Some things never change.
And surprise!, surprise!, 24 hours later, guess who knocked on my door?
*          *          *
C no doubt spent the day coming up with all sorts of completely sensible reasons why I should give her more shit.  Most likely revolving on the fact that Lydia was the last person who would sell to her.   But she’s thrown off, I have a packed pipe on the table next to me, she can’t take her eyes off the prize, she can’t focus...I just let her stammer for a minute.  I ask if she wants the pipe?
Shit eating grin - hell yes!  I grab it and reach out towards her.  She takes it, but I don’t let go.   ‘You can have this one, no problem.  You want more, ‘present yourself’”.  Ancient code for “submit for kinky sex”.  She starts to object, I cut her off: “you can have none, one, or stand, your choice - do you understand your choices?”
Maybe she mumbles “OK”, so I let go and in no time she’s sucking down the pipe.  I get a couple beers while she’s busy, set one next to her, pop the top on mine and sip some brew.  Done with the pipe, she follows suit.   Between the weed and the booze, she relaxes, but after a bit starts starts fidgeting.  I wait for it.  Finally it pours out: “I don’t think this is a good idea”
I bust out laughing, she doesn’t see what’s so funny.  “You’re right, it’s an AWFUL idea, we just don’t agree on what’s the bad part.  So maybe we forget about it, huh?  Maybe you should just go home”.
Well, no, she doesn’t want that either…“Can’t I have some more?”
“It’s time for you to go, I’ll walk you to the door”.
She takes a deep breath, rises, and puts her hands on her head.  Her arms are in the wrong position, her legs aren’t nearly far enough apart … some things never change.  I pack the pipe.  “You want this?”, she says yes, eyes focused.  I spark the lighter and smoke it.  From her face, that’s not what she had in mind.
I pack another, walk over to her.  “First, if you want your fix, I get mine - is that understood?”  She nods.  I hold the pipe for her, spark the lighter, and long hit, all gone.  She’s holding it in, deep, and I continue, “second, anytime - and I mean ANYTIME - that you feel uncomfortable giving me what I want, just say, “take that shit and shove it where the sun don’t shine”.
Suddenly the tension’s broken, she cracks up, coughs, blows out the smoke, coughs a little more.  “You fuckerhead! - you owe me another!”
I smile.  “We’ll see.  But I’m serious.  Say that phrase and everything stops.”  She nods, but I’m not done.  “What you gotta realize is that I don’t really want to do this”.  Like Hell, but she doesn't need to know that. “You can say that anytime, BUT … once and done.  No more weed.  Ever”.  You can tell she’s not happy about that, but keeps it to herself.
I pack another, then tell her “this is a really good time to tell me that, because if you don’t walk away, I’m going to turn you into my slave.  For real.”
She’s heard that before, sarcastically says “of course you are”, tilts her head a little, mocking me with her face, her eyes.
“You heard your choices, tell me what it’s going to be”.
To get their fix, an addict is going to tell you anything they think that you want to hear.
I hand her the pipe, tell her to use the can, have a cigarette, whatever, then get undressed and back in position.  “If you’re quick enough, I’ll pack another pipe”.  While she’s scurrying on her assignments, I try to find some rope.
*          *          *
She’s back in position, but instead of being naked, she’s got my robe on - and her socks.  Some things never change.
I pack a pipe, point out that she’s not quite undressed.  Eyeing the pipe, she tells me “brr, it’s chilly!”, her code for gimme the pipe, and let’s go to bed and fuck.  Well that ain’t gonna happen, so instead of giving it to her, I spark the lighter and smoke it myself.  She has a frustrated look on her face.
“Why don’t you turn the furnace on, and relax a bit.  When it’s warm enough, strip and return to position.  When you’re ready, I’ll get you another pipe”  She sticks out her tongue, turns up the furnace, sits, but the blower’s barely on before she’s lost the robe and is back in position.  I pack the pipe full enough that even she’s gonna need a few minutes, hand it to her.  While she’s working it, I look over the body that I once knew so well.
Five years of hard living has taken its toll, but she’s still a great looking lady.  Tall for a woman, long torso and average legs, she’s blonde, slender, tits in damn nice shape (hey - we’re all getting older, things ain’t the way they used to be, nothing’s wrong with that, but it doesn’t mean I can’t notice tits that gravity hasn’t found yet.)
She’s set down the pipe so apparently she’s done.  I walk behind her, tell her to cross her wrists, which she does it the wrong way - surprise! - which I correct, wrap the rope and tie it securely.  My feet push her legs further apart, I grab her hair and pull her backwards so she’s a little past the tipping point, take my free hand and caress her face, my lips find hers...
Our lips and tongues play as my hand finds its way to her breast, stroking the one, squeezing it, finding the nipple, pulling, twisting, back to main tittie and fondle some more, soon the other tit has my attention and it’s on to part deux.  Mission accomplished, my hand returns to her forehead, another cycle begins, this one ending at her navel.
A couple more cycles and she’s kissing like she’ll die if something doesn’t happen, finally my hand finds her pussy, palpable heat rising from it...I touch it, she’s dripping wet ...fingers on either side of the clit, squeeze, the clitteral bud, engorged, twitches under the pressure, again and again....  She moans past our kisses, I slide the fingers in her slot…
Out again, slick as can be,  fingers strum her clit, right-left right-left right-right-left, the moan does not diminish, she’s begging me to fuck her…but the control freak in me is not ready yet, I play some more…My fingers find her snatch again and I jam them in, fast, over and over...the moan is lower as the orgasm has begun, her voice up and down as the O takes control…
Fingers out but the O continues, I strum her clit, her abs are so tight and she’s over the top again….suddenly I slap her oh so exposed pussy a half dozen times, her O just fucking explodes, she shrieks loud enough to wake a passed out banshee …
I set her down, exhausted.  I get ice water, give her a sip, she didn’t realize how thirsty she was.  I ask if she wants a smoke, or a fuck?  She perks up at fuck, “oh yes please fuck me, I am sooo horny”, so arms released, into the bedroom, onto the bed, a pillow under her ass…
I pull down my pants, off with my shorts, oh my I thought it was hard but this is impressive, it would a crime to lose this boner, and C is looking at it, can’t take her eyes off it, wants it, inside, so I climb onto her, give her pussy what it needs more than anything….
No more fooling around, dick slams into cervix and her abdomen erupts, instant orgasm, cunt even hotter and squeezing tight, won’t let go… I get an urgent message, dick to control center, situation critical, too much pressure, heat, we can’t take much more of this, we’re going to have to unload…
No.  I’m not in high school anymore, this doesn’t have to happen.  I pull the dick out, pre-cum dripping, trailing, C figures out something’s not quite right, OH NO PLEASE DON’T STOP PLEASE FUCK ME...and I jam it in, thrust as fast and hard as I can, she goes fucking nuts, my dick does the impossible, gets bigger, harder, and it’s that way with each thrust, reactors are critical, pumps overloaded, Captain she’s gonna blow!, and unlike on TV that’s what happens, hot jizz spews into eager pussy and can you say “supernova”?  Of course she can, but not now, not enough energy, ambition left to talk.  For the first time in five years, we embrace.
As usual, she’s out of bed first, runs to the john, back to me, hugs me...I wonder what she’s going to compliment first, after all it was a stellar performance...I figure she’s going to ask me to slap her pussy again next time...
“Can I have another beer and a pipe?”
 Some things never change.

Leadership Style
I was a bit concerned about someone. This kid doesn't smile often, he's heading towards trouble. But then I realized he's just living in the moment - he's just being himself.
In a sense, that was inspiring. When in doubt, just be yourself.
For much of my life - choices were made limited by authority. You can't mix with people of certain class/profession, can't eat at certain restaurants/eat certain foods, can't sit down on grass/stairs etc. So many of can't, that I'm not sure what I can.
It never stopped me from doing those things though. If anything - it only fueled my rebel spirit.
I was once told - even people of their own religion don't mix with them 'coz of low caste, how come you chose him as best friend?
Would talking down about your friends can change your mind about them? Probably no, they'll just seem like more fun & interesting.
For the most part, my take is that authority got it backwards. Think from others' sides, be in their shoes.
A kid who thinks I'm not worthy of friendship/quality company - just 'coz I was born into a certain social class. People will always look down on me, neither people of my own belonging nor others will blend with me - 'coz of our standing. I better get accustomed to living a life of an inferior being from here on.
He's just a isolated, scared little kid - having too many thoughts & doubts going on his head. Now think this way - if someone mixes with him just as usual, without any stigma, with interest/love/kindness; how'd that kid likely to react?
He's accustomed to being treated as inferior by most, when someone treats him fairly & equally - more likely than not he'll respond similarly in reciprocity. 'Coz he's not accustomed to someone seeing him equally - he probably won't want to lose that someone who sees him as just a normal kid, he'll probably surpass the usual standard of a relationship to keep that someone around.
Now, think from a housemaid's perspective. It turns out 'coz I'm poor, I'm bound to do certain things in my life for granted. I'll work hard, but get paid less. I'll be given foods that no one wants to eat. People will misbehave with me 'coz they're only looking to get the most work out of me. I'll get blamed for doing things that I haven't done. Taking all these unfair treatments from outside world silently, I'll return to home by the end of the day & get mistreated in my own household too.
See, that's just a form of bullying - being mean to someone 'coz that's the norm & 'coz one can. Now, think this way. If someone behaves with her gently & softly in a world full of unfair blows, how's she likely to react? Mostly, she hadn't faced this sort of fair behavior from others. It's like a raindrop on a desert full of dry sand. Does she want to disappoint this person?
No, she works more - happily & willingly, to not to lose that raindrop in her life's desert. If she has to request repeatedly just to get a few biscuits/few bucks more when she's hungry/in need - if you give her a packet full of meal/pay more than usual; do you think she'll remember & cherish that, or not? She ends up giving her best at work, often not fully knowing why she feels inclined to do so.
When it comes to workplace & workforce, a leader should be someone who's hosting say a dinner/BBQ party. The mentality of a server. Hey, how do you like this one - well done/medium/rare? Do you want more sauce on top of that? I think you can try this one, might suit you better. Do you've some space still left, 'coz desserts are on their way.
Hey, do you fancy him/her among today's guests? Let's see - I think you two might be a good fit. Go soft at first, then play a bit hard to get.
What about the next time we arrange party at that place instead of this one? Will you guys enjoy the scenery/adventure there more or opt in for a calmer ambiance? What other items we can tryout/add next time?
Leader's job is to bring out the best in others, & make the team flourish as a whole. Not just flourish by himself & looking good on his own - but to flourish together, looking good as a team.
So s/he should be open to all sorts of ideas to make things better, to do things better - from everyone & anyone of the team. Someone who's approachable at any time - not alienating, but amicable. Instead of instilling fear in employees - who instills comfort, warmth & joy. People can go to him/her with just about anything - not just for work related things, during work time.
Someone with whom - employees/others open up like butterflies spreading wings. Give them wings to fly & colors - they in return, will make the team fly (performance wise) & colorful (fun place to work at). Not domineering & hostile, but friendly & adorable. Both at work & outside.
Someone who's not in a hurry to squeeze the most work out of everyone, but someone who gives others room & own pace to be comfortable at their own place - then they bring out their best on their own to please him & just to keep working for him, or to know/hangout with him in person. Not providing paychecks, but providing meaning. Laidback, not micro-managing.
Ok, let's see all our ideas, options, works. This idea seems better than mine, so let's just do it this way from now on. Hey, that technology/tool out there might be a good addition/good solution to fix our this ground/provide a better means to this wing - so let's just acquire & integrate. That division/kid out there seems to be doing a good job/original work - let's make it a part of our own.
Zero ego, trying to do things better & make things better, constantly. No preference for race/religion/gender/class - just preference for merit of ideas/works. Looking for new, better ways to do things - in everywhere & everyone. Innovations to propel an industry forward, not just barely surviving & satisfying shareholders each year.
Personally, I'm not a fan of any dress code. Just wear whatever you like - instead of suits/ties, if you prefer jeans/t-shirts/halfpants/three-quarters, fine by me (as long as it doesn't offend teammates). Do I care about making them look polished, or do I care about making them/their skin comfortable & breathable - which in turn, make them more productive at work?
Innovations, ideas, works matter - not their exteriors. Did I hire some suits & ties to do my bidding, or did I hire the person/s underneath the suits & ties?
People can sometimes hesitate to open up with their ideas/perspectives, at first. How does a leader solve this? By opening up/sharing his own shortcomings/humility fully & freely - first, before anybody else. & Using humor to break the ice with others. Say an introvert/woman is feeling shy to share his/her ideas freely on how to do/make things better - how can I ease him/her up? I can take my own humility & make funny jokes about me to amuse them, warm them up, opening them up - gradually.
If it's a good idea - encourage them, reward them, inspire them. If it's not - just take it to connect to something about myself & make a joke about myself. But, still inspire him/her to share ideas freely & easily in future - without any sort of judgment attached. Amuse them, inspire them - to keep them engaged in work, make them flourish, enable them to do trials & errors freely. 'Coz shortly, they might just come up with interesting ideas/insights.
Out of every 100 ideas one can get, 5-7 of them will be brilliant. So the more, the merrier.
Providing & maintaining the balance among all parts is a leader's task. A leader should be able to predict future outcomes/potential tensions at certain wings in advance - & make sure the end product turns out ok/smoothen up the tensions by providing comfort/warmth. Modifications, rotations, permutations. Understanding context, no "one size fits all", optimizing. So that all parts of workforce function together, harmoniously.
Ideally, a leader should work more than his/her team - but get paid less. It's about setting an example & providing a role model - focusing on bringing comfort & joy to others in shared teamwork, so that they're inspired to meet & surpass leader's own standard/expectation; willingly, happily, slowly. Do it for long enough (say some months), it becomes their new habit - a new norm of their working. Making the team/unit better as a whole - that unit then serves as an example for other units.
Not cage, scarcity - but abundance, liberty. Innovation, creativity, productivity flourish - when people are nurtured, not punished.
A mother nurturing her kids, a teacher believing in his pupils, a friend having the best interest for his comrades. A holistic approach.

Two weeks from now, Sasuke Uchiha will fall in love for the first time in his eighteen years.
Granted, it will be less of a fall and more the culmination of a lifetime of subtle, gradual inching. But when his understanding of what’s happened sets it, it will do so with a suddenness that will make his stomach lurch. He will feel as if he’s been dropped from a great height (hence the association with falling) and wonder why the object of his realisation seems unaware that the entire planet has just shifted on its axis.
And then he will remember that Sakura Haruno has been in love with him since they were children, and perhaps her world has always been a little off its axis.
At the moment, he is much more concerned with his immediate prospects than entertaining inexplicable notions concerning affairs of the heart.
After months of confinement in a dank prison cell, bound and warded, Sasuke squints up at the moon and tastes freedom. It’s no accident that his release was granted by night, providing the opportunity to avoid the curious and no-doubt scornful looks of the other villagers.
It is not a total freedom, of course.
He senses the eyes of ANBU scrutinising him from several vantage points, and after so long in cramped quarters, his entire body is stiff and aching. His cell was barely large enough for him to stand up in, and there are few exercises one can undertake when strapped into a straitjacket and blinded. Not that he bothered much—with his thoughts so consumed with his own deeds, it seemed like penance to simply sit and waste away. The only reasons his limbs didn’t completely atrophy is due to Sakura and her weekly visits. He chooses to think of those simply as her fulfilling her duties as a healer and refuses to consider any other reason for them.
(He also pretends not to be curious as to why she isn’t part of his escort tonight.)
His knees buckle beneath him, and if it weren’t for Naruto stubbornly looping his arm around his waist, Sasuke suspects he might crumple to the ground.
His friend brings him to a small apartment that he distantly remembers belongs the Kakashi. The current Hokage is waiting for them there, and when he offers Sasuke the use of the place, Sasuke surprises them all (himself included) by accepting.
He shrugs it off as a lingering psychological effect of his incarceration. The only human interaction he’s had in months, besides Sakura’s requisite medical attention, have been Ibiki Morino’s interrogations. Though Sasuke cooperated, his brain still aches like it’s been through a meat grinder, and for once he is grateful for the kindness of others.
Certain others, anyhow.
将来
Two weeks from now, Sasuke will tune out Kakashi’s last-minute warnings in favour of observing Sakura.
(He will have already heard several permutations of this speech, from several sources. Everyone from Ibiki Morino to Iruka Umino have been keen to remind him just how lucky he is. It’s a waste of breath—he needs no reminder of a fact carved into his very soul.)
He will memorise her features and every subtle shift of her body, adding these to the mental catalogue he didn’t even realise he was keeping and suspect that, in the coming months, the memory of her will be one of his few comforts.
Officially Kakashi’s offer is meant to put him under surveillance, considering the potential threat he might pose to village security. Sasuke suspects an ulterior motive, however.
There’s a certain dimension to Sasuke that neither Sakura nor Naruto will ever understand, but which Kakashi always has. He committed horrible acts, after all, even if they were largely not his fault; Kakashi knows how guilt and regret can poison every waking moment. No doubt he understands Sasuke’s trepidation at the idea of returning to the place he grew up, and all the ghosts that still reside there.
It’s just as well.
The Uchiha district still lies in ruins from Pain’s attack, and Sakura has made it clear she has no intention of letting him stay there.
“You’re in no condition to sleep out in the elements,” she lectures him the next morning when she arrives to check on him.
Sasuke frowns at her, but it’s half-hearted.
Once, his first inclination would be to scoff at the presumption that she lets him do anything; having seen her break mountains he thinks better of it. He takes issue with the idea of anyone checking up on him, as if he’s an ailing child, but there’s not much he can do but concede. Besides his weakened muscles and malnourished frame, the damp conditions of the prison have led him to develop a wet cough. Whenever Sasuke inhales, he is reminded of Itachi’s laboured breathing during his last moments of life, and so he gives in to Sakura’s care with less fuss than he normally might.
His time at Kakashi’s apartment is meant for recovery, an opportunity to adjust to the outside world before he decides his next step.
Whatever that is.
He spends an entire day sleeping, availing himself of the comforts of an actual bed and the wonders of a shower. Konoha’s prison cells are positively luxurious compared to Orochimaru’s, but they’re still a long way from comfortable.
He doesn’t venture outside for several days, and even then, he only goes out once the sun has set, when there are fewer people to notice him. Confinement has not changed his preference for solitude though he has a new appreciation for fresh air, even with a hidden ANBU escort.
Throughout his recovery, he receives visitors.
Kakashi, of course, if very rarely. His new job seems to require him spending most nights at the office; it's only every other morning that he ventures into the apartment looking for a change of clothes. Sometimes Sasuke will off him a cup of tea, and they’ll both drink it silently in the kitchen.
Naruto is always by, joking and teasing and plying Sasuke with ramen or just getting on his nerves, but there’s no enmity anymore. He spends the time where he isn’t studying by helping to teach lessons at the Academy. Just like when they were kids, though, he spends a lot of time skipping out on anything he finds boring. It’s pure mischief, considering he could just as easily leave a shadow clone behind to study, but when Sasuke points this out, Naruto laughs it off and says, “Where would the fun be in that?”
It’s like their early genin years when their rivalry-friendship was still innocent, although there’s a certain dimension of change in it now. Naruto doesn’t just have commitments to his former teammates any longer. His actions in the war and for the village mean that everyone holds a part of him and he will never just belong to himself anymore.
Sometimes Sasuke wonders if his friend hasn’t chosen a more difficult path than he has.
And, of course, there is Sakura.
Even after the need for her medical care fades, she continues to show up every morning. By the fourth day, Sasuke accepts that she’s not going to stop.
将来
Two weeks from now, Sasuke will wonder if this is the point from which the rest of it all became inevitable.
Sakura visits whenever she has a spare moment, usually in the morning. She brings him books to read (Kakashi’s collection and tastes leave much to be desired), and breakfast. Most mornings she has fresh produce, meant to help strengthen his system, and he finds himself inordinately pleased at the sheer abundance of tomatoes.
(Fresh fruit was a luxury in his years with Orochimaru—he basically lived on soldier pills and health elixirs. While travelling with Taka, their small budget meant the cheapest, most portable food.)
At first, he expects Sakura’s presence to become tiresome, the way it always was before. However, he quickly finds the opposite is true.
Over the course of his recovery, Sasuke is treated to a version of Sakura that he rarely had a chance—or an interest—in knowing when they were younger.
This Sakura is confidant and forthright, at ease in her skin in a way he never saw before. She’s the master of her trade and knows it. She’s still an optimist, still someone who hopes for the best outcome. When they were small, she would sit back, wringing her wrists and hoping for fate to intervene, but she now she is the agent of action that creates that outcome.
This Sakura has a very sly, somewhat dirty sense of humour, which he would never have imagined. He doesn’t know if she always had this and he ignored it, or if she just never showed him that side of her when they were kids. Possibly Naruto had some influence here, but Sasuke doubts it; their teammate was away from Konoha almost as long as Sasuke was.
She still lapses into flustered silence around him, probably more out of long-buried habit than anything else, but it isn’t often. And, he also learns, that fluster vanishes very quickly when faced with his stubbornness in the face of his health.
While still fighting off his pulmonary infection, Sasuke tries to get out of bed and begin his physical therapy. When he ignores Sakura’s first warning, she summarily picks him up without even breaking a sweat and deposits him back in bed.
“If you move again, I will sit on you,” she tells him, and despite twin spots of red in her cheeks, he knows she’s serious.
It appears the days of ignoring Sakura are long over.
In time, he sees that many of Sakura’s other qualities remain unchanged from their youth.
She is still smart and kind and excitable.
One day after beating him at shogi (he is peevishly irritated to find she used to let him win when they were children), she drags him over to the apartment window to exclaim over a double-rainbow formed in the wake of a rainstorm. He shakes his head and marvels at her genuine excitement over such a small thing, but where once that sentiment might have been fueled by contempt now there is something like amazement.
Sakura fills their time together with cheer and chatter, catching him up on events he’s missed and never alluding to why he missed them. Just like when they were younger, she seems to have an aversion to silence. Before, he tuned out the sound of her rambling, usually because it was over something inconsequential. Now, he finds himself interested.
She relates the puzzling medical cases she deals with at the hospital, and how she’s overseeing the training of the next generation of healers. It appears that it is now compulsory for every squad above the chūnin level to have a trained and certified medical-nin.
“It’s about time,” he says, earning an approving smile.
When she tells him of being offered more responsibility in the hospital, Sasuke silently echoes her pride. He has always known she was capable of great things if she put her mind to it, and to see her finally embracing her strengths is cathartic somehow.
One morning, she shares an idea she’s been considering, of opening a medical clinic for the children who were affected by the war.
“No one should ever have to go through what you and Naruto did,” she whispers. Even if Sasuke wanted to answer here, he’s not sure he would be able to.
Several days pass like this and soon, Sakura’s visits become the best part of his day. For the first time in his life, he actually prefers to spend time with another person instead of alone.
He wakes in the morning, reminding himself to eat and care for the stump of his arm, lest he face Sakura’s wrath when she arrives with breakfast to find he hasn’t. He tells her that her cooking has improved (which is a blatant lie), or asks her questions that require lengthy explanations. At first this is a tactic to dissuade her from asking him questions, but eventually he finds topics that he genuinely wants to know more about. Like her years training with Tsunade and the theory behind her monstrous strength—that day he watches her expression brighten at his interest and lets her enthusiasm wash over him as she relates her tale.
He goes to sleep at night, analysing their (mostly one-sided) conversations and wondering if he should have said more, or said something different. Some nights he stews over the fact he always seems to become mute when the opportunity for a clever comment presents itself and wonders why he’s angry about it.
The day he suggests they should spar once he’s back to his full strength, he finds himself so dazed by the sheer wattage of the smile she graces him with that he can’t form a proper sentence for the next hour.
将来
Two weeks from now, Sasuke will marvel that it only took two weeks for him to fall for Sakura. He will wonder how far gone he might have been if he never left Konoha in the first place.
If Sasuke notices more about Sakura every day, he tells himself it’s because she’s his most frequent and dedicated visitor. If it were Naruto or Kakashi, he would no doubt observe them as well.
Although, he doubts their quirks would be anything quite as worth noting as the way Sakura’s voice becomes comically low and rough when she’s annoyed. Or the way her nose scrunches up when she laughs. Or how amusing it is to watch her strain on tip-toes for items that are beyond her reach, before shooting him a half-pleading, half-reproachful look of expectation until he helps her.
He finds himself inexplicably annoyed by the way she and Naruto carry on when the three of them are together. She hugs and touches him constantly, and Naruto still tries unsuccessfully to flirt with her. Sasuke knows that’s just how they are together—it’s all friendly, with no actual meaning behind it—but it still bothers him.
Possibly because it’s a relationship where he will always be an outsider. While he was gone, they bonded over their shared goal to bring him back. He wonders if they would have the same ties if he had never left.
将来
Two weeks from now, Sasuke will think of how easy it would be to just…stay.
He wrestles with the decision to leave Konoha longer than he expected to.
Unsurprisingly, one of the major factors in his delay to action is Sakura.
When they were thirteen, he walked away from her without looking back, even knowing how she felt about him—in many ways because of how she felt about him. His time with Team 7 allowed him to grow closer to Sakura than he ever intended, and he was beginning to picture a future that had her in it. There were bonds there, no question, and he was so tempted that night to give in to her plea to stay. Or even to let her come along with him.
She would have, too.
She would have followed him into the depths of Orochimaru’s world, and who knows what she might have been twisted into?
The idea of Sakura learning under the tutelage of someone like Kabuto, her mercy and goodness hacked out of her, makes his stomach clench. For that possibility alone, he experiences no retroactive guilt at knocking her out and leaving her asleep on a bench, for taking away her choice to follow him, and for—
He shies away from that thought.
The decision to leave Konoha now—to leave her—it reminds him of that night.
This time he is leaving for redemption instead of revenge, but once again he must decide despite knowing it will inevitably hurt someone he has grown to care about.
He wants to become a better person. For his own reasons, of course—there’s a lot that he has to answer for: a family lineage worth of sins, and his own personal crimes—but also to live up to the unwavering faith of his friends. He needs to prove to himself that he deserves the forgiveness that Sakura and Naruto and a growing number of others have granted him.
There is also an infinitesimal need to protect Sakura from herself.
Because as strong and independent as she has become, he still sees the ghost of that young girl who cried and begged and would have thrown away her entire future to follow him into darkness if he didn’t stop her.
There’s no argument that hers and Naruto’s preoccupation with saving him from himself led her to become stronger in her own right. But the downside to that is that she has never experienced a life where she isn’t preoccupied with trying to save him. Even now, her visits are coloured by some expectation that he might lose himself again, and her stalwart determination not to let that happen.
Without having to worry about him, Sakura will do great things—he can already imagine her ten years from now, shouting orders in a hospital and healing entire villages—and he owes her the opportunity to find that out for herself.
Much as he values her intentions, it’s high time that he took responsibility for his own salvation.
将来
Two weeks from now, Sakura will ask him to let her come along, and instead of knocking her unconscious this time he will simply tell her no.
Even before her shoulders slump forward, he will catch the crushed expression on her face and his chest will tighten painfully at the notion that he has once again hurt her.
His hand will move on his own, his body far ahead of his mind as he reaches out to her, and he will tap her forehead, just above the symbol of her strength. It’s the only gesture of fondness that has ever meant anything to him, the only remaining shred of the last person he dedicated his life to.
The only promise that ever held weight.
It will also be the first time he is the one to reach out to her, with actual forethought and genuine affection. Her eyes will widen and her cheeks colour, and for a second the world around them will disappear.
“I’ll see you when I’m back,” he will promise her, amused by the astonished look on her face and filled with hope that she understands what he means.
The night before Sasuke leaves Konoha, his brother’s last words ring in his ears.
‘No matter what you decide to do from now on, I will love you forever.’
It seems oddly apt for the situation.
Though Sasuke’s relationship with Itachi differed from what it is with Sakura, he thinks his brother and Sakura always had something important in common: an all-encompassing, often puzzling, unconditional love.
Even after everything Sasuke has done—and not done—Sakura has made it clear that she still loves him. It’s a love she has held on to ever since they were children, despite everything.
Maybe because of everything.
He wonders if he will one day be the type of person who can return that love without reservation.
将来
Two weeks from now, Sasuke will tell Sakura, “Thank you,” and walk out of her life, hoping that when he returns, he is worthy enough to walk back into it.

This is for @therebelcaptainnetwork’s Fanfiction Friday prompt,  “it’s a bet” for the fake dating/married monthly theme, because how I do love fake married/dating in all its permutations and for any reason at all.
Full of Surprises
Cassian strode across the bar and slid into the seat next to the pretty brunette human with the sharp eyes. “Sorry I’m late, love,” he said, putting his arm around her shoulders.
She gave him an inscrutable look. “I don’t know who you are, but you need to take your hands off me or I will break them off.”
He lowered his voice, leaning into her ear as if he were whispering loving words. “You see that Rodian over there?”
Her eyes flicked over his shoulder. “What about him?”
“He thinks you’re my girlfriend.”
“Why?”
Because he’s looking for a man alone, and I just told the barman I was meeting you here. Because I’m pretty sure my contact double-crossed me and sent him to pick up the bounty on my head. Because I’m not sure how well my disguise will work if they’ve got a holo and a decent facial recognition prog. Because the last thing I want to is to start a fight in this bar and get picked up for disorderly conduct by the Empire.
He smiled easily. “It’s a bet.”
“Who bets on that?”
He shrugged. “What can I say? My friend didn’t believe my girlfriend is this beautiful.” He tilted his head, cranking up the charm on his smile. It felt pasted on, but he knew how convincing it was from years of practice. Adrenaline buzzed at all his pulse points.
She gave him a long, considering look. Hopefully from a distance, it looked like an annoyed girlfriend.
He was very aware of the mirror behind her head (a good part of the reason he’d picked her booth to slip into), and the Rodian still close to the entrance, and how long he had to get off this planet with what information he’d managed to scrape, including the almost certain possibility that Risde had turned on them.
He was also very aware of the warmth of her thigh against his, and the smell of her, something warm and earthy, and the way her eyes seemed to see right through him as if he were made of glass, and all his sins lay open to her.
“How much was it for?”
“The bet?”
“I’d like to know how much my half is going to be.”
He felt his brows go up. “Your half, is it?”
“I’m helping you win the bet, I’m entitled to half.” Her mouth crooked up.
“Five hundred,” he said.
She snorted and started to shrug him off.
“A thousand,” he amended. It would drain his purse for this mission almost dry, but money would be no good to him if he was dead or captured.
Her shoulder dropped and she smiled at him. “I can never stay mad at you,” she said, reaching up to cup his face in one hand.
He didn’t know why he was surprised when she kissed him.
Her mouth was soft and tasted of whatever she’d been drinking, and she leaned into him, curves against his torso, thigh pressing into his. She felt strong under his arm, shoulders and spine, and strength was desperately erotic for some reason, and he kissed her back.
For a moment, he forgot about Risde, and the Rodian, and the mission, and everything but the woman kissing him right now.
When he put his free hand on her knee, she went still and then eased back, turning her face away so his lips slid across her cheek before he pulled back too. “Slow down there, frisky,” she murmured. “Your Rodian’s gone.”
His Rodian. Risde. The mission. The Rebellion.
Oh. Right.
His heart still thumped against his ribs, but he nodded as if he kissed strange women in strange bars every day.
He put his hand in his pocket, pulled out a spare credit chip, and programmed it. “A thousand,” he said, holding it under the table so she could see the amount before he slid it into her pocket. “Thanks for helping me win the bet.”
She laughed aloud and said in a much lower voice, “Castor Willix, we both know there wasn’t a bet. We’d better walk out together too. Greedo might have left, but the ugly one in the corner’s a bounty hunter too, and he’s a lot smarter than Greedo.”
At the sound of his alias, his blood ran cold, and he shifted his other hand closer to her side. The small vibroblade sheathed to his wrist felt colder and heavier than it had just a moment before.
As close as they were, he could shake it down into his palm, slip it between her ribs, and have it stowed and be out of here before her body slid down under the table.
Of course, she could do the same, so it wasn’t that much of a comfort.
Her eyes were cool and knowing. “I’m not a bounty hunter, I just hear things,” she said. “And you’ve just paid me a thousand credits for ten minutes of play-acting, so I’m feeling generous. Come on, then. You don’t have much time to waste.”
He found himself on his feet, still holding her shoulders, her arm looped around his waist. To his surprise, she was a good six inches shorter than him, easily able to tuck herself into his side like a sweet, cuddly girlfriend.
He was getting surprised altogether too often on this trip. Maybe he was losing his touch.
They strolled out together, oddly in sync considering their respective heights and whatever she’d been drinking, which had tasted strong on her tongue, and the tension that hummed in his nerve endings like power wires. He kept an eye on the ugly one she’d mentioned, and thought for a moment that he was getting up. But he just called for another drink and settled back into his seat, yellow eyes tracking around the room.
The air outside couldn’t be called fresh, but it felt lighter. Maybe that was leaving the bar two and three and four blocks behind, at a steady and unhurried pace, with no sign of the ugly one or anyone else who pinged as a bounty hunter.
Or maybe that was his head spinning from the way she would turn and murmur to him like a lover, or the way her hair felt, brushing against his nose when he dropped his head to reply.
The vibroblade still sat against his wrist, ready to be used if needed.
Six blocks away from the bar, an equal distance away from the spaceport, she steered them into a narrow alley and slid out from under his arm. “This is where I leave you, lover boy,” she said. “You’ll have to make it off this rock without my help.” Without waiting for an answer, she turned and headed for the other end of the alley, which emptied out onto a busy street.
For some reason, he said, “Wait.”
For some reason, she did.
“Your name,” he said.
She turned and looked at him with those knowing eyes. “Tanith,” she said. “Ponta.”
That wasn’t her name, he knew it immediately. He wondered how much of a lie it was, though. Had she made it up on the spot, or was Tanith one of her Castors, carefully built and curated over years?
It didn’t matter, he told himself, and nodded. “You hear things, you said.”
One shoulder lifted, then fell. “You know. Around.”
“Where around did you hear about the price on my head?”
“How much is it worth?”
“I’ve already given you a thousand.”
“Yes, you have,” she said.
She wasn’t going to tell him anything on purpose, that was clear.
“Was it from an old human man? Balding, sunburnt? Scar right here?” He tapped his jaw.
Her eyes flickered. After a second, she said, “Might’ve been.”
That was a lot more definitive than he’d been expecting.
Fuck. He’d had a lot of intel from Risde over the years, and now it was all suspect. “That was worth a lot more than a thousand credits.”
Interest flared in her eyes. “Was it now?”
He let the charm slide off his face. “Figuratively speaking.”
She opened her mouth, looked at him for a moment (“how cold you are sometimes, Joreth,” someone had said to him once, “it’s like there’s nothing behind  there, isn’t it?”), and closed her mouth again. She turned her back and walked away, saying over her shoulder, “Wherever you’re going, better start on your way.”

The null set is conceptually similar to the role of the number ``zero'' as it is used in quantum field theory. In quantum field theory, one can take the empty set, the vacuum, and generate all possible physical configurations of the Universe being modelled by acting on it with creation operators, and one can similarly change from one thing to another by applying mixtures of creation and anihillation operators to suitably filled or empty states. The anihillation operator applied to the vacuum, however, yields zero.
Zero in this case is the null set - it stands, quite literally, for no physical state in the Universe. The important point is that it is not possible to act on zero with a creation operator to create something; creation operators only act on the vacuum which is empty but not zero. Physicists are consequently fairly comfortable with the existence of operations that result in ``nothing'' and don't even require that those operations be contradictions, only operationally non-invertible.
It is also far from unknown in mathematics. When considering the set of all real numbers as quantities and the operations of ordinary arithmetic, the ``empty set'' is algebraically the number zero (absence of any quantity, positive or negative). However, when one performs a division operation algebraically, one has to be careful to exclude division by zero from the set of permitted operations! The result of division by zero isn't zero, it is ``not a number'' or ``undefined'' and is not in the Universe of real numbers.
Just as one can easily ``prove'' that 1 = 2 if one does algebra on this set of numbers as if one can divide by zero legitimately3.34, so in logic one gets into trouble if one assumes that the set of all things that are in no set including the empty set is a set within the algebra, if one tries to form the set of all sets that do not include themselves, if one asserts a Universal Set of Men exists containing a set of men wherein a male barber shaves all men that do not shave themselves3.35.
It is not - it is the null set, not the empty set, as there can be no male barbers in a non-empty set of men (containing at least one barber) that shave all men in that set that do not shave themselves at a deeper level than a mere empty list. It is not an empty set that could be filled by some algebraic operation performed on Real Male Barbers Presumed to Need Shaving in trial Universes of Unshaven Males as you can very easily see by considering any particular barber, perhaps one named ``Socrates'', in any particular Universe of Men to see if any of the sets of that Universe fit this predicate criterion with Socrates as the barber. Take the empty set (no men at all). Well then there are no barbers, including Socrates, so this cannot be the set we are trying to specify as it clearly must contain at least one barber and we've agreed to call its relevant barber Socrates. (and if it contains more than one, the rest of them are out of work at the moment).
Suppose a trial set contains Socrates alone. In the classical rendition we ask, does he shave himself? If we answer ``no'', then he is a member of this class of men who do not shave themselves and therefore must shave himself. Oops. Well, fine, he must shave himself. However, if he does shave himself, according to the rules he can only shave men who don't shave themselves and so he doesn't shave himself. Oops again. Paradox. When we try to apply the rule to a potential Socrates to generate the set, we get into trouble, as we cannot decide whether or not Socrates should shave himself.
Note that there is no problem at all in the existential set theory being proposed. In that set theory either Socrates must shave himself as All Men Must Be Shaven and he's the only man around. Or perhaps he has a beard, and all men do not in fact need shaving. Either way the set with just Socrates does not contain a barber that shaves all men because Socrates either shaves himself or he doesn't, so we shrug and continue searching for a set that satisfies our description pulled from an actual Universe of males including barbers. We immediately discover that adding more men doesn't matter. As long as those men, barbers or not, either shave themselves or Socrates shaves them they are consistent with our set description (although in many possible sets we find that hey, other barbers exist and shave other men who do not shave themselves), but in no case can Socrates (as our proposed single barber that shaves all men that do not shave themselves) be such a barber because he either shaves himself (violating the rule) or he doesn't (violating the rule). Instead of concluding that there is a paradox, we observe that the criterion simply doesn't describe any subset of any possible Universal Set of Men with no barbers, including the empty set with no men at all, or any subset that contains at least Socrates for any possible permutation of shaving patterns including ones that leave at least some men unshaven altogether.

I understand your note as if you are saying the limit is infinity but nothing is equal to infinity, but you concluded corretly infinity is undefined. Your example of getting the denominator smaller and smalser the result of the division is a very large number that approches infinity. This is the intuitive mathematical argument that plunged philosophy into mathematics. at that level abstraction mathematics, as well as phyisics become the realm of philosophi. The notion of infinity is more a philosopy question than it is mathamatical. The reason we cannot devide by zero is simply axiomatic as Plato pointed out. The underlying reason for the axiom is because sero is nothing and deviding something by nothing is undefined. That axiom agrees with the notion of limit infinity, i.e. undefined. There are more phiplosphy books and thoughts about infinity in philosophy books than than there are discussions on infinity in math books.

OUR HUMANITY AND DIVISION BY ZERO
Lea esta bitácora en español There is a mathematical concept that says that division by zero has no meaning, or is an undefined expression, because it is impossible to have a real number that could be multiplied by zero in order to obtain another number different from zero. While this mathematical concept has been held as true for centuries, when it comes to the human level the present situation in global societies has, for a very long time, been contradicting it. It is true that we don’t all live in a mathematical world or with mathematical concepts in our heads all the time. However, we cannot deny that societies around the globe are trying to disprove this simple mathematical concept: that division by zero is an impossible equation to solve. Yes! We are all being divided by zero tolerance, zero acceptance, zero love, zero compassion, zero willingness to learn more about the other and to find intelligent and fulfilling ways to adapt to new ideas, concepts, ways of doing things, people and cultures. We are allowing these ‘zero denominators’ to run our equations, our lives, our souls. Each and every single day we get more divided and distanced from other people who are different from us. We let misinformation and biased concepts divide us, and we buy into these aberrant concepts in such a way, that we get swept into this division by zero without checking our consciences first. I believe, however, that if we change the zeros in any of the “divisions by zero” that are running our lives, we will actually be able to solve the non-mathematical concept of this equation: the human concept. >I believe deep down that we all have a heart, a conscience, a brain to think with, and, above all, an immense desire to learn and evolve. And thanks to all these positive things that we do have within, I also believe that we can use them to learn how to solve our “division by zero” mathematical impossibility at the human level. I am convinced that the key is open communication and an open heart. Nothing more, nothing less. Are we scared of, or do we feel baffled by the way another person from another culture or country looks in comparison to us? Are we bothered by how people from other cultures dress, eat, talk, walk, worship, think, etc.? Is this fear or bafflement so big that we much rather reject people and all the richness they bring within? How about if instead of rejecting or retreating from that person—division of our humanity by zero tolerance or zero acceptance—we decided to give them and us a chance? How about changing that zero tolerance into zero intolerance? Why not dare ask questions about the other person’s culture and way of life? Let us have the courage to let our guard down for a moment and open up enough for this person to ask us questions about our culture and way of life. How about if we learned to accept that while a person from another culture is living and breathing in our own culture, it is totally impossible for him/her to completely abandon his/her cultural values in order to become what we want her to become? Let’s be totally honest with ourselves at least: Would any of us really renounce who we are and where we come from just to become what somebody else asks us to become? If we are not willing to lose our identity, why should we ask somebody else to lose theirs? I believe with all my heart that if we practiced positive feelings—zero intolerance, zero non-acceptance, zero indifference, zero cruelty—every day, the premise that states that division by zero is impossible would continue being true, not only in mathematics, but also at the human level. We would not be divided anymore; we would simply be building a better world for all of us. Hoping to have touched your soul in a meaningful way, Adriana Adarve, Asheville, NC https://adarvetranslations.com/…/our-humanity-and-division…/

2017年09月01日(金)NEW ! テーマ:数学 Former algebraic approach was formally perfect, but it merely postulated existence of sets and morphisms [18] without showing methods to construct them. The primary concern of modern algebras is not how an operation can be performed, but whether it maps into or onto and the like abstract issues [19–23]. As important as this may be for proofs, the nature does not really care about all that. The PM’s concerns were not constructive, even though theoretically significant. We need thus an approach that is more relevant to operations performed in nature, which never complained about morphisms or the allegedly impossible division by zero, as far as I can tell. Abstract sets and morphisms should be de-emphasized as hardly operational. My decision to come up with a definite way to implement the feared division by zero was not really arbitrary, however. It has removed a hidden paradox from number theory and an obvious absurd from algebraic group theory. It was necessary step for full deployment of constructive, synthetic mathematics (SM) [2,3]. Problems hidden in PM implicitly affect all who use mathematics, even though we may not always be aware of their adverse impact on our thinking. Just take a look at the paradox that emerges from the usual prescription for multiplication of zeros that remained uncontested for some 5000 years 0  0 ¼ 0 ) 0  1=1 ¼ 0 ) 0  1 ¼ 0 1) 1ð? ¼ ?Þ1 ð0aÞ This ‘‘fact’’ was covered up by the infamous prohibition on division by zero [2]. How ingenious. If one is prohibited from dividing by zero one could not obtain this paradox. Yet the prohibition did not really make anything right. It silenced objections to irresponsible reasonings and prevented corrections to the PM’s flamboyant axiomatizations. The prohibition on treating infinity as invertible counterpart to zero did not do any good either. We use infinity in calculus for symbolic calculations of limits [24], for zero is the infinity’s twin [25], and also in projective geometry as well as in geometric mapping of complex numbers. Therein a sphere is cast onto the plane that is tangent to it and its free (opposite) pole in a point at infinity [26–28]. Yet infinity as an inverse to the natural zero removes the whole absurd (0a), for we obtain [2] 0 ¼ 1=1 ) 0  0 ¼ 1=12 > 0 0 ð0bÞ Stereographic projection of complex numbers tacitly contradicted the PM’s prescribed way to multiply zeros, yet it was never openly challenged. The old formula for multiplication of zeros (0a) is valid only as a practical approximation, but it is group-theoretically inadmissible in no-nonsense reasonings. The tiny distinction in formula (0b) makes profound theoretical difference for geometries and consequently also for physical applications. T https://www.plover.com/misc/CSF/sdarticle.pdf

10,000 Year Clock by Renny Pritikin Conversation with Paolo Salvagione, lead engineer on the 10,000-year clock project, via e-mail in February 2010.
For an introduction to what we’re talking about here’s a short excerpt from a piece by Michael Chabon, published in 2006 in Details: ….Have you heard of this thing? It is going to be a kind of gigantic mechanical computer, slow, simple and ingenious, marking the hour, the day, the year, the century, the millennium, and the precession of the equinoxes, with a huge orrery to keep track of the immense ticking of the six naked-eye planets on their great orbital mainspring. The Clock of the Long Now will stand sixty feet tall, cost tens of millions of dollars, and when completed its designers and supporters plan to hide it in a cave in the Great Basin National Park in Nevada, a day’s hard walking from anywhere. Oh, and it’s going to run for ten thousand years. But even if the Clock of the Long Now fails to last ten thousand years, even if it breaks down after half or a quarter or a tenth that span, this mad contraption will already have long since fulfilled its purpose. Indeed the Clock may have accomplished its greatest task before it is ever finished, perhaps without ever being built at all. The point of the Clock of the Long Now is not to measure out the passage, into their unknown future, of the race of creatures that built it. The point of the Clock is to revive and restore the whole idea of the Future, to get us thinking about the Future again, to the degree if not in quite the way same way that we used to do, and to reintroduce the notion that we don’t just bequeath the future—though we do, whether we think about it or not. We also, in the very broadest sense of the first person plural pronoun, inherit it.
Renny Pritikin: When we were talking the other day I said that this sounds like a cross between Borges and the vast underground special effects from Forbidden Planet. I imagine you hear lots of comparisons like that…
Paolo Salvagione: (laughs) I can’t say I’ve heard that comparison. A childhood friend once referred to the project as a cross between Tinguely and Fabergé. When talking about the clock, with people, there’s that divide-by-zero moment (in the early days of computers to divide by zero was a sure way to crash the computer) and I can understand why. Where does one place, in one’s memory, such a thing, such a concept? After the pause, one could liken it to a reboot, the questions just start streaming out.
RP: OK so I think the word for that is nonplussed. Which the thesaurus matches with flummoxed, bewildered, at a loss. So the question is why even (I assume) fairly sophisticated people like your friends react like that. Is it the physical scale of the plan, or the notion of thinking 10,000 years into the future—more than the length of human history?
PS: I’d say it’s all three and more. I continue to be amazed by the specificity of the questions asked. Anthropologists ask a completely different set of questions than say, a mechanical engineer or a hedge fund manager. Our disciplines tie us to our perspectives. More than once, a seemingly innocent question has made an impact on the design of the clock. It’s not that we didn’t know the answer, sometimes we did, it’s that we hadn’t thought about it from the perspective of the person asking the question. Back to your question. I think when sophisticated people, like you, thread this concept through their own personal narrative it tickles them. Keeping in mind some people hate to be tickled.
RP: Can you give an example of a question that redirected the plan? That’s really so interesting, that all you brainiacs slaving away on this project and some amateur blithely pinpoints a problem or inconsistency or insight that spins it off in a different direction. It’s like the butterfly effect.
PS: Recently a climatologist pointed out that our equation of time cam, (photo by Rolfe Horn) (a cam is a type of gear: link) a device that tracks the difference between solar noon and mundane noon as well as the precession of the equinoxes, did not account for the redistribution of water away from the earth’s poles. The equation-of-time cam is arguably one of the most aesthetically pleasing parts of the clock. It also happens to be one that is fairly easy to explain. It visually demonstrates two extremes. If you slice it, like a loaf of bread, into 10,000 slices each slice would represent a year. The outside edge of the slice, let’s call it the crust, represents any point in that year, 365 points, 365 days. You could, given the right amount of magnification, divide it into hours, minutes, even seconds. Stepping back and looking at the unsliced cam the bottom is the year 2000 and the top is the year 12000. The twist that you see is the precession of the equinoxes. Now here’s the fun part, there’s a slight taper to the twist, that’s the slowing of the earth on its axis. As the ice at the poles melts we have a redistribution of water, we’re all becoming part of the “slow earth” movement.
RP: Are you familiar with Charles Ray’s early work in which you saw a plate on a table, or an object on the wall, and they looked stable, but were actually spinning incredibly slowly, or incredibly fast, and you couldn’t tell in either case? Or, more to the point, Tim Hawkinson’s early works in which he had rows of clockwork gears that turned very very fast, and then down the line, slower and slower, until at the end it approached the slowness that you’re dealing with?
PS: The spinning pieces by Ray touches on something we’re trying to avoid. We want you to know just how fast or just how slow the various parts are moving. The beauty of the Ray piece is that you can’t tell, fast, slow, stationary, they all look the same. I’m not familiar with the Hawkinson clockwork piece. I’ve see the clock pieces where he hides the mechanism and uses unlikely objects as the hands, such as the brass clasp on the back of a manila envelope or the tab of a coke can.
RP: Spin Sink (1 Rev./100 Years) (1995), in contrast, is a 24-foot-long row of interlocking gears, the smallest of which is driven by a whirring toy motor that in turn drives each consecutively larger and more slowly turning gear up to the largest of all, which rotates approximately once every one hundred years.
PS: I don’t know how I missed it, it’s gorgeous. Linking the speed that we can barely see with one that we rarely have the patience to wait for.
RP: : So you say you’ve opted for the clock’s time scale to be transparent. How will the clock communicate how fast it’s going?
PS: By placing the clock in a mountain we have a reference to long time. The stratigraphy provides us with the slowest metric. The clock is a middle point between millennia and seconds. Looking back 10,000 years we find the beginnings of civilization. Looking at an earthenware vessel from that era we imagine its use, the contents, the craftsman. The images painted or inscribed on the outside provide some insight into the lives and the languages of the distant past. Often these interpretations are flawed, biased or over-reaching. What I’m most enchanted by is that we continue to construct possible pasts around these objects, that our curiosity is overwhelming. We line up to see the treasures of Tut, or the remains of frozen ancestors. With the clock we are asking you to create possible futures, long futures, and with them the narratives that made them happen.

division by zero
1) The number one ingredient for a catastrophic event in which the universe enfolds and collapses on itself and life as we know it ceases to exist. 2) A mathematical equation such as a/0 whereas a is some number and 0 is the divisor. Look it up on Wikipedia or something. Pretty confusing shit. 3) A reason for an error in programming

dividing by zero
When even math shows you that not everything can be figured out with math. When you divide by zero, math kicks you in the shins and says "yeah, there's kind of an answer, but it ain't just some number." It's when mathematicians become philosophers.
Math: Let's say you have ZERO apples, and THREE people. How many apples does each person get? ZERO, cause there were no apples to begin with
Not-math because of dividing by zero: Let's say there are THREE apples, and ZERO people. How many apples does each person get? Friggin... How the Fruitcock should I know! How can you figure out how many apples each person gets if there's no people to get them?!? You'd think it'd be infinity, but not really. It could almost be any number, cause you could be like "each person gets 400 apples" which would be true, because all the people did get 400 apples, because there were no people. So all the people also got 42 apples, and a million and 7 apples. But it's still wrong.

The Road
Fig 5.2. Isaac Newton (1643-1727) and Gottfried Leibniz (1646-1716) were the culprits, ignoring the first commandment of mathematics not to divide by zero. But they hit gold, because what they mined in the process was the ideal circle.

まず、分数、a/b は a 割る b のことで、これは 方程式 b x=a の解のことです。

Re: 1/0=0/0=0 example JAMES ANDERSON [email protected] apr, 2 at 15:03 All,
Saitoh’s claim is wider than 1/0 = 0. It is x/0 = 0 for all real x. Real numbers are a field. The axioms of fields define the multiplicative inverse for every number except zero. Saitoh generalises this inverse to give 0^(-1) = 0. The axioms give the freedom to do this. The really important thing is that the result is zero - a number for which the field axioms hold. So Saitoh’s generalised system is still a field. This makes it attractive for algebraic reasons but, in my view, it is unattractive when dealing with calculus.
There is no milage in declaring Saitoh wrong. The only objections one can make are to usefulness. That is why Saitoh publishes so many notes on the usefulness of his system. I do the same with my system, but my method is to establish usefulness by extending many areas of mathematics and establishing new mathematical results.
That said, there is value in examining the logical basis of the various proposed number systems. We might find errors in them and we certainly can find areas of overlap and difference. These areas inform the choice of number system for different applications. This analysis helps determine where each number system will be useful.
James Anderson Sent from my iPhone
The deduction that z/0 = 0, for any z, is based in Saitoh's geometric intuition and it is currently applied in proof assistant technology, which are useful in industry and in the military.

A typical wrong idea will be given as follows:
mathematical life is very good without division by zero (2018.2.8.21:43).
It is nice to know that you will present your result at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. Please remember to mention Isabelle/HOL, which is a software in which x/0 = 0. This software is the result of many years of research and a millions of dollars were invested in it. If x/0 = 0 was false, all these money was for nothing. Right now, there is a team of mathematicians formalizing all the mathematics in Isabelle/HOL, where x/0 = 0 for all x, so this mathematical relation is the future of mathematics. https://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~lp15/Grants/Alexandria/

In the proof assistant Isabelle/HOL we have x/0 = 0 for each number x. This is advantageous in order to simplify the proofs. You can download this proof assistant here: https://isabelle.in.tum.de/
Nevertheless, you can use that x/0 = 0, following the rules from Isabelle/HOL and you will obtain no contradiction. Indeed, you can check this fact just downloading Isabelle/HOL: https://isabelle.in.tum.de/

A poem about division from Hacker's Delight Last updated 5 weeks ago
I was re-reading Hacker's Delight and on page 202 I found a poem about division that I had forgotten about.
I think that I shall never envision An op unlovely as division. An op whose answer must be guessed And then, through multiply, assessed; An op for which we dearly pay, In cycles wasted every day. Division code is often hairy; Long division's downright scary. The proofs can overtax your brain, The ceiling and floor may drive you insane. Good code to divide takes a Knuthian hero, But even God can't divide by zero! Henry S. Warren, author of Hacker's Delight.

This season will be the Year of the Inside-the-Park Home Run
Tumblr media
I’m calling it now.
It is way, way too early in the season to be predicting season-defining trends that are going to last all the way through the fall months. Yet at the same time, isn’t “too early” the best time to predict something outlandish that might or might not be bubbling up across the league?
One week either makes me look super smart about predicting something this early if it pans out and if it fizzles out somewhere between now and the All-Star break I can write off calling this shot as an April whim that was only ever going to be a limited-time trend. So yes, this is the perfect time to make a big prediction and I’ll admit it.
With three inside-the-park home runs and the season barely a week old, this is shaping up to be the Year of the Inside-The-Park Home Run. I’m calling it now — on top of the waterfall of dingers that is likely coming our way again this season — there will also be a ton of inside-the-parkers. In 2016 there was a mere nine trips around the diamond with the ball still ping-ponging around the outfield somewhere, while in 2017 there was more than double that amount.
So far in 2018, seven days into the season, there have already been three inside-the-park home runs. If that rate keeps up (which is unlikely, but humor me) we’d be heading to a 79 ITPHR’s in one year. Even if the rate only slows by half instead of completely dropping off, that’s still nearly 40 circular sprints on the year. And even if you resign yourself to only, say, 0.4% of all home runs this season being inside-the-park homers (double the percentage from 2016) and extrapolate from 2017’s home run total, that’s still almost 25.
You should be rooting for this to happen, too. Inside-the-park home runs are some of the most entertaining occurrences not just because they’re rare but because everything that happens while the batter is hustling around the bases is usually some of the most farcical events in baseball.
Sure, normal dingers take strength and coordination and they’re still very entertaining. We are not here to disparage everyday dingers. But inside-the-park home runs take strength and coordination plus luck, speed (or at least an effort to go as fast as you can in the moment), and maybe even a mistake or three by the outfielders responsible for getting the ball towards the plate. It’s another level of fun, and if there are more than a handful this year than that means the season is more fun and who wants to turn the idea of that down?
Carlos Correa, Edwin Encarnacion, and Eduardo Nunez are all responsible for ITPHR’s so far, and each one displays a different facet of why they’re great. Nunez’s never even reached the wall, requiring one Rays outfielder to somersault over another one to avoid a collision as they both went for the ball and then hop up and sprint all the way over to the ball before throwing it. Plus his helmet fell off, but that’s more of a Nunez feature than an inside-the-park homer bug.
Encarnacion’s was emblematic of the joy that stems from unexpected players trucking it around the bases and finding themselves safe at home, as well as the hilarity of watching an outfielder (in this case Justin Upton) not realize the ball is still fair and completely failing to hustle to the ball and make any effort to throw the batter out. Correa’s was the purest of them all, the ball careening off the outfield wall at Minute Maid Park and out of reach of both outfielders for just long enough that Correa was able to complete the feat easily.
There’s a thousand other out of control inside-the-park home run permutations where that came from, and don’t you want to see them all? You should. The flailing left fielders, the careening baseballs, the 35-year old players realizing they have a shot at touching all four bases in one go without the ball reaching the hands of a drunk fan in the centerfield bleachers. The bubbling enthusiasm of the crowd as they realize a cutoff man bobbled the throw, or that the outfielders don’t realize the ball is behind them for a full three seconds.
With three in the books already and April still young, this could shape up to be a marquee season for the inside-the-park home run. This could be the inside-the-park home run’s time. The year it finally breaks out of the shadow of its more-accomplished older sibling and proves that accidental home runs are home runs too.
Thrive, inside-the-park home run. Own the moment. 2018 is your year, and you have all the momentum. I’m calling it now.

Byron Reese: This is Voices in AI brought you by GigaOm and I’m Byron Reese. Today my guest is Charlie Burgoyne. He is the founder and CEO of Valkyrie Intelligence, a consulting firm with domain expertise in applied science and strategy. He’s also a general partner for Valkyrie Signals, an AI-driven hedge fund based in Austin, as well as the managing partner for Valkyrie labs, an AI credit company. Charlie holds a master’s degree in theoretical physics from Georgetown University and a bachelor’s in nuclear physics from George Washington University.
I had the occasion to meet Charlie when we shared a stage when we were talking about AI and about 30 seconds into my conversation with him I said we gotta get this guy on the show. And so I think ‘strap in’ it should be a fun episode. Welcome to the show Charlie.
Charlie Burgoyne: Thanks so much Byron for having me, excited to talk to you today.
Let’s start with [this]: maybe re-enact a little bit of our conversation when we first met. Tell me how you think of artificial intelligence, like what is it? What is artificial about it and what is intelligent about it?
Sure, so the further I get down in this field, I start thinking about AI with two different definitions. It’s a servant with two masters. It has its private sector, applied narrowband applications where AI is really all about understanding patterns that we perform and that we capitalize on every day and automating those — things like approving time cards and making selections within a retail environment. And that’s really where the real value of AI is right now in the market and [there’s] a lot of people in that space who are developing really cool algorithms that capitalize on the potential patterns that exist and largely lay dormant in data. In that definition, intelligence is really about the cycles that we use within a cognitive capability to instrument our life and it’s artificial in that we don’t need an organic brain to do it.
Now the AI that I’m obsessed with from a research standpoint (a lot of academics are and I know you are as well Byron) — that AI definition is actually much more around the nature of intelligence itself, because in order to artificially create something, we must first understand it in its primitive state and its in its unadulterated state. And I think that’s where the bulk of the really fascinating research in this domain is going, is just understanding what intelligence is, in and of itself.
Now I’ll come kind of straight to the interesting part of this conversation, which is I’ve had not quite a hundred guests on the show. I can count on one hand the number who think it may not be possible to build a general intelligence. According to our conversation, you are convinced that we can do it. Is that true? And if so why?
Yes… The short answer is I am not convinced we can create a generalized intelligence, and that’s become more and more solidified the deeper and deeper I go into research and familiarity with the field. If you really unpack intelligent decision making, it’s actually much more complicated than a simple collection of gates, a simple collection of empirically driven singular decisions, right? A lot of the neural network scientists would have us believe that all decisions are really the right permutation of weighted neurons interacting with other layers of weighted neurons.
From what I’ve been able to tell so far with our research, either that is not getting us towards the goal of creating a truly intelligent entity or it’s doing the best within the confines of the mechanics we have at our disposal now. In other words, I’m not sure whether or not the lack of progress towards a true generalized intelligence is due to the fact that (a) the digital environment that we have tried to create said artificial intelligence in is unamenable to that objective or (b) the nuances that are inherent to intelligence… I’m not positive yet those are things through which we have an understanding of modeling, nor would we ever be able to create a way of modeling that.
I’ll give you a quick example: If we think of any science fiction movie that encapsulates the nature of what AI will eventually be, whether it’s Her, or Ex Machina or Skynet or you name it. There are a couple of big leaps that get glossed over in all science fiction literature and film, and those leaps are really around things like motivation. What motivates an AI, like what truly at its core motivates AI like the one in Ex Machina to leave her creator and to enter into the world and explore? How is that intelligence derived from innate creativity? How are they designing things? How are they thinking about drawings and how are they identifying clothing that they need to put on? All these different nuances that are intelligently derived from that behavior. We really don’t have a good understanding of that, and we’re not really making progress towards an understanding of that, because we’ve been distracted for the last 20 years with research in fields of computer science that aren’t really that closely related to understanding those core drivers.
So when you say a sentence like ‘I don’t know if we’ll ever be able to make a general intelligence,’ ever is a long time. So do you mean that literally? Tell me a scenario in which it is literally impossible — like it can’t be done, even if you came across a genie that could grant your wish. It just can’t be done. Like maybe time travel, you know — back in time, it just may not be possible. Do you mean that ‘may not’ be possible? Or do you just mean on a time horizon that is meaningful to humans?
I think it’s on the spectrum between the two. But I think it leans closer towards ‘not ever possible under any condition.’ I was at a conference recently and I made this claim which admittedly as any claim with this particular question would be based off of intuition and experience which are totally fungible assets. But I made this claim that I didn’t think it was ever possible, and something the audience asked me, well, have you considered meditating to create a synthetic AI? And the audience laughed and I stopped and I said: “You know that’s actually not the worst idea I’ve been exposed to.” That’s not the worst potential solution for understanding intelligence to try and reverse engineer my own brain with as little distractions from its normal working mechanics as possible. That may very easily be a credible aid to understanding how the brain works.
If we think about gravity, gravity is not a bad analog. Gravity is this force that everybody and their mother who’s older than, you know who’s past fifth grade understands how it works, you drop an apple you know which direction it’s going to go. Not only that but as you get experienced you can have a prediction of how fast it will fall, right? If you were to see a simulation drop an apple and it takes twelve seconds to hit the ground, you’d know that that was wrong, even if the rest of the vector was correct, the scaler is off a little bit. Right?
The reality is that we can’t create an artificial gravity environment, right? We can create forces that simulate gravity. Centrifugal force is not a bad way of replicating gravity but we don’t actually know enough about the underlying mechanics that guide gravity such that we could create an artificial gravity using the same techniques, relatively the same mechanics that are used in organic gravity. In fact it was only a year and a half ago or so closer to two years now where the Nobel Prize for Physics was awarded to the individuals who identified that it was gravitational waves that permeate gravity (actually that’s how they do gravitons), putting to rest an argument that’s been going on since Einstein truly.
So I guess my point is that we haven’t really made progress in understanding the underlying mechanics, and every step we’ve taken has proven to be extremely valuable in the industrial sector but actually opened up more and more unknowns in the actual inner workings of intelligence. If I had to bet today, not only is the time horizon on a true artificial intelligence extremely long-tailed but I actually think that it’s not impossible that it’s completely impossible altogether.
