Hi, can i request a headcanon for rottmnt turtles with a gn!reader who loves watching movies and play video games with them?
TMNT Boys x Gamer!GN!Reader Headcanons
Pairings: Rise!TMNT x GN!Reader
Summary: How the boys would react to a S/O who enjoys gaming and movies
Warnings: none
Type: Romantic ❤️, Fluff ☁️
A/N: Sorry this took so long! I'm working on applying to colleges right now, so I'm super behind with requests! Hope you enjoy <3
Headcanons start below cut.
Rise of the TMNT Masterlist
Main Masterlist
Tumblr media
Rise!Raph x Reader
Raph is pretty into games
He's not as good as his younger brothers, but he takes every opportunity he can to bond with you
Due to his size, he can sometimes struggle with games since the controller is so much smaller than his hands
Though he hides it well, Raph is just as competitive as his brothers
Since he sometimes struggles with gaming, he makes sure to always team up with you during games night to make sure he's on the winning team
Raph prefers cozy games like animal crossing or stardew valley over more competitive games
One of his favorite things to do with you is vist each others islands and have animal crossing dates
Aside from gaming, watching movies is one of his favorite ways to spend time with you
Before you started dating, he would drag his brothers and April out to the living room for mandatory movie nights at least once a month
Once you start dating, the two of you have ~private~ movies nights together once a week
He’ll watch just about anything, but he can’t handle horror
His favorite movies are either action movies or Disney movies
Since the two of you can go out to normal movie theaters, the two of you sneak out and watch drive-in movies from the rooftops of New York
Tumblr media
Rise!Donnie x Reader
Donnie is very into video games
If you've seen the purple game, you know how competitive Donnie can get
If you're as good as him, he'll be very excited to have a worthy challenger
His brothers can never keep up with him, so the two of you will spend days locked up in his lab playing video games until Raph breaks down the door and makes you sleep
Even if you’re not as good as Donnie, he still won’t go easy on you
He may love you, but he loves winning even more
Like Raph, Donnie always teams up with you during games night
Not that he can't hold his own, but he enjoys the bragging rights when the two of you absolutely demolish his brothers in super smash bros
Even though he'd much prefer to play video games, Donnie will still watch movies when you ask
Even though he agrees to watch movies with you, you won't always enjoy it
Donnie has the tendency to talk during movies
A LOT
Don't expect to actually hear what's going on in the movie
Donnie will spend the entire movie pointing out scientific inaccuracies and spoiling the plot, especially if it’s a sci-fi movie
Donnie is very theatre kid coded, so I think he would really enjoy musicals
Tumblr media
RIse!Leo x Reader
Leo LOVES gaming
He's not as good as Donnie or Mikey, but he's just as competitive
In addition to be super competitive, Leo's also a very sore loser
He's the type of person to turn off the tv right before someone beats him in Mario Kart
Leo would team up with you during game nights to leech off of you and take all of the credit
He also really enjoys watching movies with you, especially if you’re into sci-fi
Instead of staying cooped up in the lair, he usually just portals you into the back of regular movie theaters where you won’t be seen
Leo also tends to talk during movies
He doesn’t spoil the plot like Donnie, but he’ll ask you questions about the movie that you also don’t know the answer to
He’ll spend the whole movie asking you who certain characters are and why they do certain things, which you also don’t know because you haven’t seen the movie
He also really enjoys movie marathons, so be prepared to spend a week straight watching the entire Jupiter Jim franchise
Tumblr media
Rise!Mikey x Reader
Mikey is the second best gamer in the family after Donnie, but he’s not quite as competitive
Besides Raph, Mikey is the most likely to go easy on you and let you win
Even though he’ll go easy on you, the same cannot be said for his brothers
During game night he’ll make sure to pair up with you and give you some of the credit when the two of you beat his brothers
Mikey is a really big movie lover, so watching movies with you is one of his favorite things
He’ll watch any movie you want, but prefers not to watch horror
His favorite type of movie is definitely Disney movies
His brothers are always hovering when the two of you hang out at the lair, so he prefers sneaking over to your house and watching movies in a blanket fort in your room

Femme fatale, long forgotten and "meant to be forgotten forever" mother of Bowser in my Bowuigi Super Mario Bros AU, Lena!
A little backstory: I was browsing through some Mario fanart; particularly of Wapeach drawn by the talented Nico--Neko on DeviantArt when I stumbled upon the character, Lena featured in a few of the artwork. From there, I researched about this character and the 1993 live action Super Mario Bros. movie. I'm not going to lie; the movie was a dumpster fire that contradicts the video games but at least, there were a few gems amongst the mess. I honestly dig Lena's costumes.
I wanted to make a bit of lore predating the Mario storyline in my AU so I decided why not take an original character from the 1993 movie and redesign as well as rewrite her backstory for my own Mario AU? Most of my Lena redesign is inspired from the Lena art done by Nico since the artist's take is so pretty so I did my best to put a few twists to Lena in my style to make her unique in my own spin. As you can notice, I make her around the age gap she was portrayed in the original movie. My guess is that she's around her mid to late 30's, I could be wrong but oh well. 🤷
Comment if you guys would like to hear my AU's backstory for her! Likes, reblogs and comments are most appreciated! ❤️

we are entering the age of endless middle grade video game movies and people are co-signing it. first they made the mario movie no one asked for and everyone memed about how bad it would probably be and then it came out and people went to see it as a joke and then started saying it was surprisingly good and it made a fuckton of money. and like here’s the thing it was kind of just a decent kid movie like it was alright I wouldn’t call it surprisingly good sorry if that’s pretentious. but like fine okay whatever as a one-off that’s fine. anyways then there was the fnaf movie and everyone was like ohmygod why and memed about it then went to see it as a meme and and people said it was surprisingly good and it made a fuckton of money. which like I highly doubt it was actually good and also it’s a game made by a conservative freak who gets money from it. anyways so there’s a fallout movie getting released soon and luckily I haven’t fucking seen anyone talking about it so I really hope it bombs but tbh I’m cynical so I think people are probably going to say it’s “surprisingly good”. oh and also they’re doing a live action zelda now and my bet is on tom holland or possibly timothee chalamet or some version of those guys for link because how could it possibly be anyone else. and here’s the thing they know that no matter what the people will go see it and they’ll make money. like yeah they got rid of mario’s distinct voice and hired an evangelical. doesn’t matter. made a fairly middling movie. doesn’t matter. anyways so the guy directing the zelda movie did um *checks notes* maze runner. which is. um. a choice. but maybe he deserves another chance? and wasn’t working with great material but tbh he kinda just made the material worse? well anyways. it doesn’t matter. it’s gonna make money. and then they’re gonna make a fucking elder scrolls movie. and then they’re gonna make a third doom movie. yes they made another doom movie after the one with the rock. and yeah I watched it like years after it came out and it was bad there’s a reason you’ve never heard of it. the main character’s name was joan dark. do you get it. do you g. do you get it. it’s just like. it’s like a reference. do you get it

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is Good
Yeah, you heard right. I came out feeling like this film was better than I would've ever expected. I'm talking about the Super Mario Bros. movie... from 1993.
Tumblr media
That's right, the live-action one. The one considered the first and one of the worst video game films of all time. I'm not gonna sugarcoat it, I enjoyed this film; it was better than it had any right to be even with its glaring flaws. So yeah, with the animated Mario movie coming out this year, I wanna talk about what went wrong, what they got right, and if this had to be as bad as many have said. It's no April Fools, let's really do this...
Tumblr media
This film doesn't have Bowser in all his thicc glory tho so I won't say it's as good as what Illumination cooked
Now I'll go ahead and say: the '93 film isn't a "faithful looking" Mario Bros movie. Like the alternate dimension they go to is just the Bronx on a Friday evening. There's a nightclub where we meet a Mario enemy in the form of a very hot black woman that results in Mario fishin' in her titties. Donald Tru- President Koopa is a human and yet hates humans apparently? The princess is named Daisy, Toad is just some guy, and Luigi doesn't have a mustache. This is more of a Super Mario World movie than a "Super Mario Bros" movie like omg, it's a mess. Then again, I'm looking at it as not just somebody obsessed with "faithfulness" and I see a film that does some things right both originally and for the games.
Tumblr media
In the least, Hoskins and Leguizamo made for a legit great pair
I think about the blueprinting around this film, back in the 90s. You're tasked with making a movie and if it just had to be live-action, what COULD have been done? I'm not excusing the probable production hell that went on with this or saying the changes are all perfect, but some of what they do here actually worked even if they don't look the part. Mario and Luigi felt like close brothers and we don't get into a forced falling out determining who was the better brother or more in the right. Even if Luigi doesn't have his cowardice, this was before Luigi's Mansion solidified that into his personality so making him a more optimistic leap of faith kind of guy fits with him being the younger brother. Mario's more cautious but reasonably so, all the while he's the reliable take-charge hero he's known for in the games. Dennis Hopper, I don't doubt hated working on this, was great playing the unapologetically nasty villain Koopa. However in name, Daisy is still made the princess and she's as kind-hearted as imagined. Yoshi is still a dinosaur. So much of this movie looks like they bastardized the point of Super Mario but at the same time, I can still say they fit in this original spin of the universe.
Tumblr media
Plus Yoshi genuinely looks great here like it's a mystery how this looked better than Disney's attempt at dinosaurs 7 years later
If there is a genuine problem I have with this film, it'd be a couple of the side characters. Big Bertha (yes, real name) was a minor character that I liked but is never seen again at a certain point. Koopa's relatives Iggy and Spike, also humans, switch from bad to good as well after literally gaining intelligence but it still didn't make sense why they betrayed Koopa. There are more than enough things in this world that will not make sense even if you can piece it together. I don't think this'll leave you hating yourself for watching it, but it'll leave you flabbergasted for sure.
Tumblr media
Then again if the animated Mario Movie doesn't have them go to a nightclub, Illumination needs to fall
Otherwise, this film revels in the chaos and that's why I kinda love it. People who tout this as bad seem to be under the impression that it's Super Mario Bros in name only when I don't see it that way despite the liberties they took. The film gets that Mario and Luigi are plumbers from Brooklyn, that they grow to be heroes, and that they're rescuing a princess from an evil bad guy. Even with this Total Recall-looking fantasy world, I won't pretend to say it doesn't work as a Super Mario Bros adventure. Even if they got too ambitious, it never felt like they knew nothing about who the bros were and how they could make a story for them. Again, if you see it more as a Super Mario World film you'll be less confused. Plus, on its own, it's kind of a shlocksterpiece. It's not as corny as the Super Show cartoon, but this throws you off in very compelling ways. You have a scene where Koopa uses a SNES Super Scope to shoot a guy and transform him into a chimpanzee. It's madness but consistently so. I'm not gonna pretend this is the worst thing ever just because it doesn't look the part and isn't "faithful" to the games.
But you know what? It begs the question. What could've been done differently for this film? I like this film but I can see where people were befuddled and disappointed by it so you know what? I'll be constructive this time because I believe in some alternate timeline of 1993 there's a version of the Super Mario Bros movie that's actually better received.
Tumblr media
Let's make a more faithful adaptation, if I may
It'll still have the characters, accurately costumed, same casting, and if it has to be the case, it will be live-action. Except this time the story... is a road trip. Not like Sonic's eventual movie that just takes place in the real world, Mario and Luigi get transported into the Mushroom Kingdom and their quest of course is rescuing the princess and stopping Koopa. Since most Mario games have been about getting from point A to B, I figure the trip could consist of the brothers traveling through a couple different worlds, meeting the different folk of each world, and incorporating what they learned to defeat the bad guys. The bros would of course get into an argument but it wouldn't result in them separating or being entirely against each other. In their predicament, that would be stupid. They could also be an inspiration for the people they help along the way and they'll have an entire army fighting Koopa's army Flash Gordon style. The final act would be them conquering world 8 or Koopa's domain. It'd be like the Super Mario Adventure comics meets... Robots, I guess? In the end they save the day and while they're sent back to the real world, the door is always open for more adventures just like the original. Easy to execute idea, yeah? It'd be as much about the Mario Bros as it is the actual worlds of this franchise. Wishful thinking I know, but what do I know?
Tumblr media
I just know that adaptations don't have to be faithful to be both enjoyable and considerate of the source material. I'm hard on stuff like Netflix's Cowboy Bebop, the first Sonic Hedgehog film, and the Disney remakes especially not because they needed to be 1 to 1 with the source material, but what they do as their own thing isn't enjoyable and at its worst, they bastardize what worked perfectly before for audiences that don't care. If you want to adapt something and give it a style, go all the way with it while knowing the values of the source material that made it work in the first place. That's what the '93 Mario Bros movie did for me. The directors didn't make Mario and Luigi whole other people, they just gave them a different yet similar adventure. I just hope with this review of mine, you give it a shot and don't look at it for a movie that should've been. All that said,
Tumblr media
It's an amazing 8 Out of 10. Kino with the right eye.

What are your detailed thoughts on the Mario movie?
I appreciate your interest! ^^
Gonna preface by saying I've only been interested in the Mario series for a few years (beyond the Mario & Sonic Olympics if that counts) for about 5-6, compared to 16-17 years of Sonic and still can't say I'm the biggest fan as I haven't played many games and don't have a lot of knowledge. So I feel I'm not equipped to speak much on some parts but I can share my thoughts based on what I do know and saw! And don't be surprised that I compare it to the Sonic movies quite a bit XD
Not gonna go heavy with spoilers by getting too much into specific moments but might mark as such just in case.
I'll start with the summary of my overall feelings and that I think it's simple, cute, and fun and that's been my impression of every Mario game I have played and seen so far, so it's along the lines of what I expected and I'm satisfied with it, I'm not sure what else people were expecting. It made me smile and feel joy the most I have from any movie I've seen in a while. And it's not quite as generic as a lot of other movies of the genre because they care about capturing a lot of the game's essence.
The visuals and atmosphere were gorgeous, I love how they took great advantage of some of the beautiful colorful worlds they've already created for the series and utilized them well, as well as how they merged them all together creatively. That's exactly what all movie adaptions could and should do, it'll always be so much more beautiful and appreciated than anything you can do in boring dull live action landscapes lol
I like all the references and callbacks, I noticed many despite not being the most knowledgeable Mario fan, compared to both Sonic movies where I didn't even notice a lot despite all my knowledge and years of enjoying it because I couldn't even see them. The Mario movie managed to include tons of noticable ones AND has more subtle easter eggs and background details.
The actual Nintendo games music being involved so much more instead of just outside licensed music was really good. The visuals of the returning environments are fantastic. The tons of characters they already managed to include in such a short but sweet movie and handle so well is amazing. The tons of game aspects, references, and easter eggs to find are a delight.
I like the implementation of the power ups and how they didn't turn them into some magical thing and change it drastically. I like how they know that the game mechanic can work for a movie story and cared to add all the things that people actually know and enjoy about the games. Unlike the Sonic movie not doing that and giving him completely different abilities.
The faithfulness to the series capturing the magic and fun all around makes me smile. Despite not knowing Mario for long I can appreciate all of these things too and it feels like they care about what the fans actually want and enjoy about the games. Every video game adaption movie ever needs to take notes from this because it has all the main most important fundamentals.
I like how Mario was silly but still brave and heroic. I like how he determined he is and doesn't know when to give up. I love how it's a good thing and one of his biggest strengths and the important theme throughout. He's told he can't do something or the odds seem against him and he still fights and believes in himself and protects what he cares about. A simple but good message.
I like how Luigi is the cute silly shy scaredy cat he is but how he manages to step up to help his bro at the end. Would've been nice to see him get to do more but his moment of saving Mario and teaming up with him at the end was great. Their bond and moments together was sweet and I like how much it motivates them and how they want to stick together and protect each other.
Bowser was great because he's funny and wants to marry Peach and is also genuinely really threatening. It makes you understand why he's the villain and why it's such a serious dire situation for him to take over, he's fucked up and mean and evil and destructive and that's what I love in my villains!!! And Jack Black did an awesome job and didn't just use his own voice like hey I'm Jack Black lol Very unlike Carrey just being Carrey instead of Robotnik, especially in the first movie.
If I got a movie Eggman anything like this I would've gone insane and died from joy went to heaven ahsjsbfjsnfb it's not faaaair. I'm happy for anyone that feels the way I do about Eggman but for Bowser because I'm sure y'all would've been especially losing it for this. I do love him too and he is hot but you know my ultimate preferred fucked up dilf of the two lol. Bowser got such better treatment in my eyes. Happy for him as a fellow bf of Eggman's XD
Bowser, Mario and Luigi were my favorites so they're the ones I'll bring up here but I think every other character was handled pretty well too based on my limited knowledge of them outside of the movie and I didn't have any issues, they added to the entertainment a lot too. I like how they pretty much all have a good balance between humor and seriousness when the scenes call for it, nothing felt really annoying or forced, handled with respect.
The humor in itself was actually fine too, my brother and I tend to cringe at certain jokes and humor in kids movies these days some stuff being in the Sonic movies ngl but there was nothing of the sort in this movie that made us feel that way, we both noted to each other right way. Very inoffensive, not super obnoxious or hip and just generally enjoyable for all ages, which is a cool pleasant surprise coming out of a movie by Illumination especially lol
The animation is fantastic too, really putting all the character's tooniness to it's full advantage so they're lively and bouncy and expressive in ways that really helps bring out their personality. Again, that's why cartoony characters will always be best in CG no matter how exaggerated and expressive you think your live actors can be. Every character was charming and pleasing to the eye, a ton of love was clearly put into capturing them visually.
I'm surprised it's rated so low by actual reviewers last time I saw, not that I care about their opinions but I'm with the audience more than usual. I don't know what I'm missing about it not being likable because I haven't read the reviews and don't plan to lol. I think this is practically everything a video game adaption should be, though in a perfect world I'd want all the characters to have all the same actors behind them too.
I liked this way more than both Sonic movies combined, though I'm biased as of course I'll love full CG over live action hybrid for toony series like Sonic and Mario any day. But man, Mario is genuinely better and more likable to me than both Sonic movies in every way because I'm not really a fan of those at all in comparison. Even without the comparison as I hardly even thought about the Sonic movie throughout, it was enjoyable and made me really happy.
But then it's funny because I've been a Sonic fan for near my whole life while Mario for a mere 5 minutes in comparison so you think I'd be biased and saying that the Sonic movies are better or just as good but they really didn't do it for me. It felt like both Sonic movies were too concerned about appealing to non Sonic fans with generic Hollywood plot lines taking up huge chunks of the stories than giving them more of what we all actually love about the game series in the first place.
The Mario movie went all out in almost every way it could right from the first movie and THAT'S how it's done, I have so much respect and appreciation for it. They knew they didn't need to appeal to non fans specifically and can hold up great as is. I think that should always be expected out of any video game adaption, especially cartoony kids ones that have existed as long as Mario and Sonic. They did a great job and there's a lot of video game heart in it bravely and unapologetically.
The voice cast is still their most bizarre choice but it's honestly okay once I'm watching it and I don't have major issues with it, I stopped thinking about it after the first few minutes and it wasn't annoying as it was random and unnecessary. But of course I still think it's really sad and not fair that Charles Martinet didn't get to at least have the main role of voicing Mario, despite him literally being right there and more than willing to do so because nobody deserved it more than him.
I wish they'd honor legacy actors by letting them shine in their role on the big screen instead of bigger names for audience and money. Same happened for the Sonic movie and it raises my fear that even if we did get the CG Sonic movie of my dreams, Eggman might not even be voiced by Mike Pollock then either :( But I love what Charles get to do, I'm glad he had some part in it! Hearing him as Giuseppe/Jumpman and Mario's dad was a delight, his performance is always pure joy.
Though he still deserved way more of course and I'll always be really sad that most actors in the Sonic series didn't even get any cameos or side roles at all.
Something also funny to me is there were TONS more people in the cinema than both Sonic movies, both on the first day when we almost went as it was sold out and there were actually a lot of people in there when I went yesterday too. I haven't been amongst an audience for a movie for so long. For both Sonic movies the cinema was near empty for all those, so everyone around here has a big preference! XD
So yeah, I had a great time with it! I recommend it to everyone and this is a movie I want to watch again and own on blu-ray. This has helped me appreciate the Mario series even more because of how much fun it has with things that are in the games and don't stray from using it for the sake of wider appeal. And it's a gorgeously animated and designed movie with a simple but sweet story and sometimes it's all a great movie needs! I loved it 🥰❤️💚🐢⭐🍄🪠

My top 10 unpopular opinions.
10. Sevendust is one of the best Metal bands I have listened to I genuinely love Sevendust, but while the band has many fans, some of us can agree that they don't quite get the recognition they deserve, and because of that, several have indeed labeled them as underrated.
They have a great unique sound that is very heavy yet melodic, and they're one of the few bands that haven't really changed their sound all too much, and yet they still come off as great and fresh...that's just me though.
9. Double Dragon (Neo Geo) is one of the most underrated fighting games I have ever played I love the Double Dragon games (most of them, anyways), and this gem for the Neo Geo is no exception.
It's loosely based on the Double Dragon movie (more on that later), and yet it actually does a great job at making the film universe seem very cool, especially as an alternate take on Double Dragon. Beyond that, it's a fun Street Fighter II-esque fighting game, which is ironic because it's published by SNK (Capcom's long-time rival behind The King of Fighters and Samurai Shodown among others).
Definitely a much better Double Dragon fighting game than Double Dragon V: The Shadow Falls, and it helps that it was developed by Technos Japan aka the company behind the original Double Dragon arcade games.
8. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is overrated I used to like this movie, but upon rewatch and reflection? I realize just how cringe and obnoxious it was.
Every single character is unlikable, especially Scott Pilgrim himself, and I didn't find it all that funny. It does have a great visual style from Edgar Wright as well as some cute easter eggs for video game fans, but that's not enough to salvage it.
7. Pineapple on Pizza is fine While not my favorite topping of Pizza (I prefer Pepperoni and Meat Lovers), Pineapple Pizza is not as bad as some make it out to be, especially when compared to Anchovies.
6. The old Super Mario Bros., Double Dragon and Street Fighter movies are not the worst The first few live-action movies based on video games pre-Mortal Kombat (1995) get quite a horrible reputation among fans, but as a fan of the games they are based on, I can still watch them.
Yes, they are very loose takes on the classic games, which is largely one of the main reasons why fans hate them, and yes, they're not technically great movies either, but they can be very amusing, especially in that guilty pleasure/so bad it's good way.
I can still let them pass for at least trying to make video game adaptations work, especially since they were among the first examples of the concept. We did get better video game movies, especially the animated Mario and Street Fighter II movies, but believe it or not? We also got much worse examples (such as Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li and the adaptations directed by Uwe Boll).
5. I never got into the MCU's depiction of Spider-Man I love Spider-Man, especially the first two movies by Sam Raimi, but I never really got into later Spider-Man movies beyond them...well, except for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which is honestly the best Spidey flick since Spider-Man 2 (I have yet to see Across the Spider-Verse, but I have heard great things).
Tom Holland's version of Peter Parker did get a lot of praise, but I never really liked him all that much. To me, he was kind of a wuss. I recognize that he does mature by the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, but while it was nice to see him with both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield on screen, I had already lost interest in the MCU by that time.
If you like the MCU Spider-Man movies? That's perfectly fine.
4. Street Fighter III and Mortal Kombat X are some of the most overrated fighting games ever Some will scream blasphemy since I am a massive fan of both Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, hence my nickname Ryu Kang, but I never got into these particular installments.
They were both aiming to be focused on the new generations of both franchises, similar to Tekken 3, which I felt did that concept much better. The two games get a lot of love, especially among tournament players, but they're not my cup of tea, and I do prefer other Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat games.
3. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2003) is one of the best incarnations of the TMNT franchise I love the TMNT franchise, whether it'd be the 80s cartoon, the first two live-action movies from the 90s, or some of the video games like the two arcade games by Konami and Shredder's Revenge.
While the 2003 cartoon has a fanbase, it's also one that tends to be pretty underrated, especially in later times. I love how it aims to be darker and mirror the original comic books while still working within the parameters of being a Saturday morning cartoon.
I also have a personal attachment to the cartoon as I used to watch it a lot around 2003-04. Plus, I will gladly take it over later incarnations of TMNT like the Michael Bay movies.
2. Batman Forever and Daredevil (2003) are pretty underrated comic book movies These two movies do get so much hatred, I feel. While neither of them are among the greatest superhero movies ever made, I genuinely feel there was a lot of effort put into them, especially considering that they were victims of heavy studio meddling.
The director's cut of Daredevil (2003) especially salvages that movie, and I would like to see the original cut that Joel Schumacher intended for Batman Forever if they ever plan on releasing it.
1. I prefer Sonya Blade with Liu Kang over her with Johnny Cage Some of you definitely saw this coming, especially if you follow my page, but yeah, I'm not very fond of the CageBlade pairing.
I have already written many times before why I feel this way, but in a nutshell...Johnny annoys Sonya so much, and she only warms up to him whenever she's put in danger and he comes in to save the day. Also, later MK games and movies did a poor job handling their dynamic.
While Liu Kang and Sonya never really hooked up in the canon, the interactions they do have really show that the two get along well, and I do feel the pairing has fan art and fanfic potential beyond what I normally do with them.
With that being said, I don't mind Liu Kang with Kitana either (though recent MK games and movies do a poor job handling them too), and I would be biased and harsh if I said that he deserves only one between Kitana and Sonya.
So yeah, those are my top 10 unpopular opinions. If you don't agree with any of these, it's all good. Let's be civil about it.

Gods, Ortho was probably being nice, but it backfired so much. As for the rest, they’re enjoying this. You know, I don’t think Leona likes kids, but he doesn’t have the heart to hurt one.
Tumblr media
Foreshadowing. Vil, you looking for recruits already?
Tumblr media
It is really good that none of you have your unique magic. It would be a slaughter.
Tumblr media
I LOVE HIM! WHOEVER TRANSLATED IDIA, I LOVE YOU! THANK YOU!
Tumblr media
I really like this. I always love shouting quotes and lines like this.
Tumblr media
Idia reminds me of my frustrations with Pokemon X and Y.... I am still hurt by it.
Tumblr media
-Looks at marvel and the live action Disney movies- He’s not wrong.
Tumblr media
-cries in Pokemon X and Y-
Tumblr media
Oh, you have hope! I don’t! Especially now!
Tumblr media
I am waiting for my Kid Icarus game! Please! 2012 was the last one!
Tumblr media
HE’S SO RIGHT! HE IS! THIS IS WHY I LOVE THE OLD NINTENDO! WHY?! WHY?!
Tumblr media
You don’t know the pain I am feeling....
Tumblr media
To be honest, I felt the same and kind of do still.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I have to say, Vil’s outlook is fantastic. You can always do something to make something happen. If you just do nothing, then nothing happens. His tenacity is astounding. He continues to work hard and pursue his ideal life and dreams. Gotta be honest, Vil really grew on me as a character. I cannot get over him at all
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Azul would love Mark’s Getting Over it Series.... Again, I also enjoy it! Hahah!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I still can’t believe Rook did it... He loves Vil and no one can tell me otherwise.
Tumblr media
ORTHO SHIPS IT?!
Tumblr media
I still can’t believe you did.
Tumblr media
I somehow doubt it...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
........... Foreshadowing. You know, I’m going to make a list of foreshadowing with Idia and Ortho on this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ok first off, Vil did give the best piece of advice, but also the worst one when the gate of hell and souls of the damned are present. Two, I don’t know much about Japanese, but I do know that big brother is said in two different ways. This make sense that Idia had a nickname for us in the West.
Tumblr media
DID IDIA NOT PROGRAM YOU TO NOT LISTEN TO THE SOULS OF THE DAMNED?! ORTHO NO!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah, I get it. I have this mentality at times too. I don’t stop working hard until I can firmly say, “Did I do my best?” or “Am I satisfied with what i accomplished today?” I understand.
On the flip side, I DON’T THINK I WOULD OPEN THE GATE OF HELL TO DO THIS!

OK GOOD i been looking forward to bitching about it
Mind you i only watched the live action film so i dont know if the story is better in other versions
So, Scott begins dating knives, a highschool student, as a way to get over his ex envy. It dpesnt seem to go into a sexual direction (i think there was a joke making fun of scott for that but i dont remember) but it doesnt change that hes taking advantage of this girl for his own emotional comfort
No one in the band objects to this, thwy either find knives annoying/ make fun of scott for seeking a highschool student
Then Scott meets ramona at this party and they go on this most pathetic date together after he wouldn't stop bothering her after she deliverd his mail.
His band is weirded out by him two timing ramona and knives and it becomes a side plot where everyone is telling him to break up with knives before she finds out (i think wallace says something like "youre gonna break this poor girls heart" in a flat tone which is sadly the most empathetic anyone is to knives in the entire film)
But scott is a bitch so of course he doesnt do that
All the while there is this dramatic plotline avout scott having to foght ramonas 7 evil exes, most of which are unintresting
Mathew unfortunately never shows up after his first appearance and his entire character is hes not white and hes ramonas ex (tbh most of her exes are like this, like one guy is a movie star and ramonas ex)
Two other exes that are mildly intresting :
Vegan guy who is now dating envy- after hes deafeated by being tricked into drinking milk (???) Scott and envy have this "moment" where scott calls envy by her real name and she goes "no one calls me by that name anymore" and hes like "well maybe they should" and leaves -like?? I dont care??? Even more so, why the fuck does envy care??? Scott just blew up her boyfriend into mario coins
-At some point sscottbreaks up with knives and she becomes angrily obsessive with ramona for taking scott from her, emulating the way she dresses and stalking her
Second ex thats mildly interesting- a girl, who is ramonas ex (i swear all the exes are like this) shes angry at ramona for cheating on her i think and ramona is like "our relationship was never serious, i was just bicurious" to which she responds "well im biFURIOUS"
She and ramona fight because fuck scott, and someone in the audiance makes a comment about lesbian porn
-she still gets exploded into mario coins (as all of thd exes are)
Scott gets pissed about all of these exes trying to kill him and ramona not telling him about it from the get go and ramona is like "well shit if youre gonna be a bitch about it i guess were gonna break up" And they do
-Ramona gets back with her ex (the last one remaining if we dont include scott now)
-The ex hires scotts band but scott refuses to join, so he leaves the band
-Scott crashes the party to fight this final ex to the death (cause thats a reasonable reaction)
-(Im not joking, it is framed as reasonable because this ex is weird and possesive of ramona, as if scott is some innocent angel)
-knives interrupts the fight because she wants to kill ramona for breaking scotts heart (???? Girl hes not worth defending)
-Knives and ramona find out about the two timing thing
-scott get killed by the final ex
-Scott meets ramona in the afterlife, ramona reveals that shes being mind controlled by the final ex (???? Yippe for lack of agency)
-scott is brought back to life via video game magic
-he defeats the final evil ex
-He apologises for the two timing thing
-he and ramona still end up together
-The End
The only thing i enjoyed from this film is the visual effects
Ultimately it was just boring to me, like a slightly better version of 'ready player one'
Also from my limited knowledge the author is mixed (white + korean) and I saw some places say that he regrets his depiction of knives as he feels he projected a lot of internalised stuff onto her- but idk
gonna be honest i can certainly see your disdain for this series style of comedy coming in through in this recap, heff. interesting to know that about the author tho, that kind of clarifies some stuff i think.
i kind of like the concept of the evil exes and the video game fights and stuff. i like when stuff that's got a serious core is set in a funny, sometimes bordering on nonsensical setting. from what i can parse the comics/movie are generally about like two bad people (scott & ramona) dating each other and trying to be better despite having done some real scummy stuff (mostly they cheated on their exes i think but also probably other stuff)
which yknow. i can get behind that as a concept. i honestly don't care that scott is like a shitty guy who dates a high schooler cause i understand that that's part of him being shitty.
mostly i'm just not sure why it's so popular 'cause i've never really been able to get the appeal. i mean the first version of it i've actually bothered sitting down to watch (despite seeing stuff about it for years) is the new anime one, that i went into knowing was gonna be a complete departure from the original story.
annnyyway that's enough about scott pilgrim. i'm gonna go draw or something.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie
“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is vibrant and a whole lot of fun.
Mario and Luigi are two brothers, living in Brooklyn, who are starting up their own plumbing business. With everyone around them doubting them, the brothers want to make a name for themselves by fixing a city-wide manhole leak. This leads them to a mysterious pipe that transports them into a foreign world. The brothers get separated and it’s up to Mario to save his brother.
I wasn’t someone who played a lot of Mario games growing up. I’ve played some of the staples, but I was more interested in Pokémon. Still, I’ve always appreciated the iconography and incredible music of the Mario franchise. I also think I know more about the Mario franchise than the average viewer. All of this could have contributed to my bias toward this movie, but I wanted to disclose that before I got into my review. For starters, I love the character designs of this movie. They’re extremely expressive in a way that the video games couldn’t make. They’re familiar enough to be instantly recognizable, but also different enough to have their own identity. Second, the voice acting was my biggest fear going into this movie. When the cast was announced, people were laughing at the choices, saying that each choice gets more and more outlandish as the announcement video went on. I’m happy to say, the performances weren’t as distracting as I thought they’d be. Jack Black as Bowser was the stand-out performance for me. Keegan-Michael Key as Toad was also really great in my opinion. Voices like Chris Pratt, Charlie Day, and Anya Taylor-Joy are too recognizable for me, so it was hard to distinguish the character from the actor initially, but after a while, I stopped noticing. The only real voice actor I had a problem with was Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong. I thought the voice didn’t fit the character at all. The score is probably one of the biggest highlights of this movie... when it’s Nintendo music rather than licensed music. The orchestral renditions of classic Mario music were an absolute treat to listen to, but they were mixed in with generic licensed music that barely fit the tone of the scene. I don’t understand why the introduction of Donkey Kong Island had to be supplemented with “Take On Me” by A-ha. Another big highlight was the vibrant look of the movie paired with its extremely crisp resolution. This movie is just a visual treat. It’s exactly how colorful a Mario movie should be. The quality was so crisp that I could see individual hairs on the characters and even the texture of their clothing. The action set pieces were also really fun. There were lots of fight moves that were ripped straight out of the games. It’s all fast-paced, but still had a level of visual clarity that I could understand exactly what was going on at all times. Finally, the jokes were surprisingly decent. I thought this movie was going to cater to an extremely young demographic, but there were a lot of jokes that got a genuine laugh out of me. I know a lot of people felt like Luigi was sidelined and that the movie should’ve been about the Mario Brothers instead of Mario and Donkey Kong, but I understand why they made the decision. Some people also think that turning Princess Peach from a damsel in distress to a warrior princess was a bad decision in favor of appealing to the feminists. I don’t see it that way. The decision is pretty simple if you think about it. Mario is the audience surrogate. He’s the vehicle in which the audience learns about this new world. He’s the main character, so he needs to have some stake, which would be to rescue his brother. If Mario was with Luigi throughout this movie, I think their main objective would be to find a way back home instead of fighting a war for a kingdom of people he just met. Plus, it gives more screen time to Mario and Peach as a pair, which could also lead to their iconic romance in future installments. I do, however, understand the criticism that the writers basically came up with a bunch of references and wrote a loose plot around them. I can see why some people would be upset with that, but I thought the movie still worked. All in all, I think this is a movie for lifelong Mario fans and newcomers alike. It’s just a fun time and I’m looking forward to seeing more from this new movie franchise.

I'm looking forward to the Mario movie TBH.
Like, Mario is now where near as important to me as Sonic is, but the Mario franchise were some of my first REAL video games, and I still have a complete DVD collection of "The Super Mario Bros. 3" show from over a decade ago (honestly though, I watched it mostly for Kooky)
I think it’s because of those cartoons that I can deal with Mario not having an Italian accent in the movie, but, honestly, the thing I'm most disappointed about is they didn't find a way for him to say "let's a go!" Or "here we go!" Instead of "here we come". I hope they change that (though I don't think he said those lines in the cartoon so IDK why I'm hung up on that)
IDK, I'm probably just nitpicking, but I hear "here we go!" Or "Let's a go!" And my brain says "that's Mario" but "here we come just sounds so... basic to me
IDK, I guess I'm also scared Illumination will try to make the Mario movies their new Despicable Me and milk it to death with no real love put into it??? I mean, they don't have the best track record IMO (anyone else remember the Lorax ad?)
IDK, I'm trying to reserve judgement until I see the film, and other than that little nitpick, I can't wait to see the world of Mario on the big screen in a... proper way...I guess... IDK, I haven't seen the old live action, save for some scenes but after hearing that some of the actors apparently hated the movie so much, they drank on set, I'm not sure I ever want to

Super Mario Bros review
Super Mario Bros review:  I saw the new Super Mario Bros movie.  It’s cute.  It’s definitely kid-friendly. I recommend it for as early as Kindergarteners.  You don’t need to be familiar with the games to follow it.  It’s a pretty easy to follow and a simple story.  It’s a bit surreal but so were the games.
Mario and his brother Luigi are plumbers living in Brooklyn and they accidentally end up in a surreal fantasy world where sentient Mushroom people called “Toads” (short for toadstools) are happily governed by Princess Peach. Princess Peach is a human woman who was transported to the fantasy world as a toddler decades earlier and the Toads had decided to make her their leader.
Luigi ends up captured by Bowser (king of the Koopas, a race of turtle creatures).  A Toad named Toad (Go figure. He’s like a human named Human) befriends Mario and eagerly leads him to the princess to ask for help. Mario beseeches Princess Peach for help rescuing his brother.  Knowing that Bowser means to attack her kingdom, Princess Peach first puts Mario through an obstacle course to see what he’s willing to endure to save his brother. Though he never quite completes the course he does keep improving and Mario never stops trying, which makes her decide he’s worthy of joining her.  Princess Peach takes Mario with her to ask the Jungle Kingdom for help.  Gaining an alley of Donkey Kong (a Gorilla prince from the Jungle Kingdom), they set out to defeat Bowser and rescue Mario’s brother.  It’s a pretty straight-forward and easy to follow adventure story.   The movie is well-animated and features some classic 80s rock songs like Bonnie Tyler’s “Holding out for a Hero” and “Take on me” by A-ha.  Along with orchestrated versions of the original video game musical themes.
There are lots of Easter Eggs for people who grew up with these video games, including retro references to the very first video games from the early 1980s.  They even find a way to incorporate the theme song from The Super Mario Brothers super show from 1989.  And it even respects the lore established by the old cartoon series.  This was done with a lot of respect to the fans of the franchise. And it’s cute.  Mario’s big (and heavily drilled) character trait is that he doesn’t know when to quit / never gives up and the movie tells you why this is a good thing. I recommend it for kids even if you never played the games.  Everything is pretty well explained. There are some good themes about Brotherly love, Loyalty and Friendship and why it’s not only a good thing, but important to never give up.  It’s *definitely* a kids film though.   Don’t expect the hard edge and dark undertones of the 1993 Mario Brothers live-action movie.  This is more like a Saturday Morning Cartoon.  And it’s decent for what it is.

Who gives the best advice?  Trina. She's been through everything I've been through which helps make her advice a little bit more rooted in reality when she gives it to me. She's also always been a great listener and just very empathetic.
Is there any band out there that you like every song by them?  Paramore.
What’s the best song a friend has ever introduced to you?  She's not in my life anymore and I hardly listen to this artist anymore, but Athenna introducing me to Banks shook up my little 17 year old world and it made me go down an indie frenzy for a while.
Have you ever smoked?  I have, but haven't done so since college. I'm glad it didn't turn out to be something I'd seek out.
Does your favorite uncle have any children?  I have three favorites – only one of them has kids. The other two is a pair of brothers and don't have kids of their own.
Have you ever been in a lighthouse?  Yes, local ones.
Do you still talk to your first crush?  I can't remember the last time I spoke with Andi...we added each other on Facebook years after she migrated to New Zealand, but I don't think we even said anything to each other then.
Where would you like to travel?  I'd love to go back to Korea, but in Seoul this time.
Are you shy about singing in front of people?  Yes, both because I'm intrinsically shy when it comes to performing, and because I know I can't sing and like what is the point of doing that for people if I know they won't enjoy it anyway lol.
Do you know anyone who always makes themselves out to be the victim?  Knew, but yes.
Have you ever been insulted or called names by a significant other? I don't think so.
What’s your favorite movie battle scene?  I don't like action/war movies.
Have you ever been to a same-sex wedding?  That wouldn't even be legal here, so no.
What’s the population of your hometown?  Close to a million.
What’s the most difficult experience you and a significant other have gone through together?  Just the whole idea of having to navigate the world in silence in front of our families. Otherwise that relationship was for the most part riddled with shitty petty drama.
What’s something you have zero tolerance for?  Animal abuse and racial discrimination.
When's the last time you said you were sorry?  Yesterday.
Would you like living on the coast?  It'd be nice, but honestly I prefer going to the beach/sea as an occasional vacation. It wouldn't make me tired of the view.
Honestly, do you enjoy arguing?  It stresses me out and I try to be as non-confrontational as possible.
Which theory do you wish but perhaps not believe was true about afterlife?  I wish I can be reunited with the pets I lost in my lifetime.
Are you scared of losing the person you like to someone else?
Do you have a hard time making decisions?  I struggle with making major decisions because I hate change and I hate breaking up routines I'm already used to. That's why I've been stuck in this job for over three years.
If there was a large spider in your room, would you stay in the room?  No, and I'd call over my mom to help get rid of it.
What’s your favorite kind of meat? (vegan/vegetarian options count!)  Can't ever go wrong with pork belly and raw seafood.
Have you ever been mistaken for staff at a store you were just visiting?  It's maybe happened once or twice, but nothing to warrant an anecdote.
What’s the coolest or most memorable animal you’ve ever seen at a zoo?  The idea of zoos just makes me sad and I've largely just felt bad when I'd see animals that I used to only see in textbooks.
Do you share a bedroom with anybody?  Nope.
What video game have you played the most hours of? If you don’t know, just make a rough guess.  Mario Kart Wii or Warioware Smooth Moves. Wii was my childhood console 100%.
Who will you see within the next week?  Just people related to work afaik. I don't have any upcoming plans with friends so far.
Do your parents live in their hometown(s)?  Nope.
Have you ever modeled before? I have not.
If offered $1 million, would you do a reality show of your life?  I could but there'd be nothing to show. I work all day and only rest when I'm not chasing after a deadline lol.
Who owns the computer you are on?  I do.
What’s your best friend’s favorite color?  I'm not sure actually, but I'm going to guess white even though I could be completely wrong.
What color was your senior prom dress?  Our prom was in junior year, but anyway mine was beige.
How many boyfriends/girlfriends did you have in 2014?  One.
Northernmost state you’ve been to:  We don't have states but the northernmost spot in the country I've been to is the actual northernmost province we have, which is Batanes.
Think you’ll live to be 100? No. My family doesn't really have a history of centenarians and given my carefree lifestyle I don't think I'll end up living very long haha.
Which YouTuber do you feel like you could be friends with easily?  Vien! Easily the most relatable and seems to be the most approachable in their whole group.
Who do you know personally that has a nice singing voice?  My cousin Maggie.
If you met your favorite musician, what would you ask him/her?  The next time I go to Korea what's the best place I could possibly go to for meat?
What's something you used to believe in that you don't anymore? One Direction getting back together.
What's something you believe everyone should have?  Access to food, clean water, and an efficient public transport system.
What's the first thing you do once you get home from a trip?  Greet and pat the pets.
Do you listen to podcasts? Which ones?  I don't. I lose attention way too quickly with podcasts because I find I need to be watching something in order to process whatever it is I'm listening to. Otherwise I'd forget soundbites within seconds.
What was the last heavy thing you lifted?  I was at a gym yesterday for a workout-themed photoshoot and I was playing around with all the dumbbells and kettlebells lying around haha. I could hardly believe those tiny things could hold weights of up to like 45 kg lol.
Do you have an anchor tattoo?  Nope.
Are your hands unsteady?  No, but they're also not surgeon levels of steady.
Do you think you’re pretty?  I think I look fine, but I know others who are much prettier.
Who do you know that wears the most makeup?  A couple of coworkers.
Are you anyone’s first love?  Possibly? Idk.
Has anyone ever told you they were in love with you?  Yeah.
How much does your mother know about your sex life (or lack thereof)?  Nothing.

Why Were There So Many Throwback RPGs and Remakes In 2023?
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/why-were-there-so-many-throwback-rpgs-and-remakes-in-2023/
Why Were There So Many Throwback RPGs and Remakes In 2023?
Tumblr media
The quality of video game releases in 2023 has been discussed in detail by many, and it will absolutely go down as one of the best years the medium has experienced, strictly in terms of the excellent games that were released. The larger industry and its members will always look back on 2023 with justified frustration.
Patterns in any year are always a given. Trends inspire entire genres to be prevalent, and we also have events like 2009, where there were two high-profile open-world games about super-powered humans: Infamous and Prototype. This year will certainly be remembered for games like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Baldur’s Gate 3, among others, but I can’t help but notice that RPGs citing a specific era of the genre were also, inexplicably, hugely popular.
Tumblr media
Earlier this year, we featured Sea of Stars on the cover of Game Informer magazine. Talking to the team at Sabotage about its inspirations, it specifically cited the classic Super Nintendo game, Super Mario RPG. And when I played Sea of Stars a few months later, I could clearly see how the developer pulled from that game. One of the reasons Sea of Stars exists is because games like it are rare today, which makes it all the more surprising that Nintendo would announce a full remake of the game shortly after. What are the odds?
Tumblr media
And then, within weeks, Square Enix saw it fit to announce and release an excellent remake of the beloved 1998 Star Ocean sequel, Second Story. That game fits right alongside Sea of Stars and Super Mario RPG as an RPG of a specific era – one interested in telling a linear story without overcomplicating its primary mechanics.
Tumblr media
Before all of these games, however, we had Octopath Traveler II, a well-liked sequel to a game that may have served as a strong indicator to people and publishers with money that, “Hey – we miss these kinds of games. We want our characters and environments to look like a bundle of squares while going on an adventure. In fact, maybe it is the game to point to that started this whole thing.
Tumblr media
It was admittedly less successful than the others mentioned here, but even WrestleQuest from earlier this year was another game playing in the throwback RPG medium. Late 2022 also saw the release of Chained Echoes. We also have the Dragon Quest III HD-2D remake coming at some point in the future.
So why is all this happening now? Why has this sub-genre of RPGs – inspired by the 16 and early 32-bit – become so popular all of a sudden? Or was it always there, and I just wasn’t paying attention?
Tumblr media
I have a few ideas to put forward with little basis in scientific research. Video games, even compared to other entertainment mediums, are much more focused on nostalgia. Reliving the TV shows and movies you watched or books you read as a child simply isn’t as strong as the emotions related to existing within an interactive world. I didn’t just passively play Super Mario RPG when I was young – I lived in its universe. And RPGs are particularly good at that. They encourage players to exist within them and take them at a slower pace. The age we are now (i.e. old) has now placed us in a position where the experiences we are looking to remember are less the action-packed platformer challenges of our youth and more the relaxed vacations. We’re too old for the exciting amusement park of memory. Those rides make me nauseated at this age. But the old beach house where I just hung around and swam when the mood hit me? That sounds great. I want to play that video game, and apparently, it’s an old RPG where reaction time isn’t as important as making sure you have the right sword equipped.
It’s either that, or they are just selling really well, and people are buying them. I accept either explanation, both, or neither. Whatever gets me an HD-2D remake of Chrono Trigger the fastest.

Good Stuff: The Super Mario Bros Movie
Tumblr media
A fan shouldn't always sugarcoat it. Even if you get something you never figured you'd ever want but appreciate a lot, that doesn't mean a bias should bury any deeper feelings. What I'm getting at is Illumination's Super Mario Bros Movie can be so awesome and it was worth going to the theaters to see personally, but I can't get over the crippling flaw it has to say it was as great as I could say now. Better to be honest now than get increasingly unfulfilled later. First, though, I gotta give the props where they are due.
Tumblr media
First, Bowser was The Best in this and I want him
For real, the animation was what I waiting for this whole time, no problems here. The film is fun. If it wasn't fun, that means Disney would've made it and it'd never come out anyways because of "creative differences". Illumination I found can make animations that are really bouncy fun, and it's best shown here. Plus the characters look incredible, DK especially, and there are moments where, in the best way, it felt like a cutscene from a video game I would want to play. Not to snipe at the Sonic movies, but this is seriously what I've wanted from video game movies since... Angry Birds 2? Like enough with the hybrid live-action crap, make a cartoon if the sourced game is about a CARTOON universe. "You mean like Ratchet & Cla-"
Tumblr media
We do not... talk about that one.
This leads to something tricky I had in mind to discuss, and that's "faithfulness". Not long ago I watched the 1993 Mario Bros movie, a fiasco that one can argue was unfaithful to most of the source materials even with the few things they got right. Did we get something more suitable here? Well, I definitely wasn't annoyed with the fucking stupid discourse surrounding Peach's characterization and Mario's voice that's for sure. Many will cite this as having a great fuckton of references but I enjoyed the liberties they took whether or not they were references. The fact it starts out in Brooklyn made me already smile but the final act had my booty jiggle with unhinged glee. There's some corniness to it, especially with the certain musical needle drops they do, but even then it felt like they reveled in the corniness of those moments. This made me believe Nintendo and Illumination were looking to just make it excitable and enjoyable regardless of what fits where. It pains me though, knowing that there is that crippling flaw I mentioned at the beginning because while this film was fun, it went by fast. Ludicrously so... disjointedly so.

It was the Apex Cinema Speedrun, if you will
Many negative reviews claim this has a very thin plot and I honestly didn't consider that a wholly bad thing. A thin plot doesn't mean it wasn't cohesive or focused, or that there weren't any arcs to be had. The real problem comes in that certain moments don't feel earned when we barely get any time to cherish them. The pacing of this was kinda atrocious, the tight runtime truly being a detriment behind ideas for characters getting brought up well only to have shallow payoffs. Peach and Luigi especially had something about them I wanted to see more of, but before you got to see the plant blossom, they keep chugging and you're like "Ah, that's it?" They didn't need to spell everything out but let the characters breathe.

Bowser and DK felt like the exception
If this was the only movie we ever got again (knocking on wood), the fun of it all would soon subside for increased disappointment in the long run. I could say "This needs more movie" as a compliment, but that would mean I was fine with what we got. The live-action film, batshit as it was, felt consistent with everything it wanted to show and tell whether or not you saw the director's cut. That's why it became a cult hit, you remember how batshit it was. I genuinely enjoyed the film, but even with its many stand-out moments, it's gonna be hard to remember this film as much as I want to.

Except for Lumalee, I don't ever wanna forget them
I won't tout this overall as mid or "playing it safe" because they did so much right with this. When I say they stuck the landing with the Mario brothers themselves, that genuinely got to me. When we got the adventure, I relished the adventure. Like for the love of god, give me more of all this PLEASE! However, I won't give it a pass and call it perfect just because it tickled the Nintendo fan in me. Illumination's great when it comes to being in the moment, that's why I stopped hating on them, but in terms of their films having staying power this being a Mario film is carrying it hard from being a potentially forgettable one. For me, this is the movie adaptation of the Super Mario Super Show I never knew I wanted but looked forward to and felt was worth it. At the same time, my mind is fighting my heart strong knowing this Mario movie could've definitely been stronger. My final say is that it's a 6/10 movie with 10/10 moments. If you're looking for fun, this delivers no doubt, and don't let this review stop you from calling it a personal masterpiece.
