ALL timkon recs I BEG
hello hi! here are some of my favs! it got long so putting some under the cut
💄 Lipstick on the glass by @cairoscene read for timkon being soft and goofy and disgustingly in love, set in vague future college-y years with amazing core four dynamics too. cair is one of the funniest people to ever exist and we are so blessed that they decided to write some timkon. (also read for my own greatest contribution to literature, the fictional “jerry the void nexus” meme)
🎢 been a number and a name by @wynterstars i had SO MUCH FUN reading this one, a 90s comics-divergent AU where robin and superboy become friends—and crushes—when superboy is pretty new on the scene. feat. lex luthor being terrible, tim staging a rescue operation that at one point involves platform shoes and a blonde wig, spice girls references, and fantastic action sequences. it’s also a series, with an installment focusing on kon & clark, and a currently updating longfic sequel with SO MANY timkon identity shenanigans (my beloved) and kon feelings (also my beloved).
📸 the surveillance series by @smilebackwards i feel like i rec this all the time but it’s because it’s THAT GOOD. a tim-centric AU where tim joins the family late, but is still involved in bat business without the bats realizing. there’s some fun timkon identity shenanigans at the top, and some of my all-time favorite tim characterization (ruthless! lonely! brilliant!) plus a great tim & bruce arc, too.
🦉 Detours by miyaji_08 this is part 2 of a series and i def recommend reading the whole thing! a reverse robins + joker jr au that has lots of trauma and lots of healing, and in part 2 there’s timkon identity shenanigans that’s simultaneously enemies to lovers + And They Were Roommates. tim sure does run a gauntlet of horrors in this series, but it has so much healing and also one of my fav reverse robins concepts i’ve read so far.
📱 unfurl by @burins tim and kon might be dating, and there’s no kryptonian sex ed handy. bruce, being bruce, makes it his business, which means talking to clark and Realizing some things about his own feelings. superbat are billed first here, but i think timkon steal the show—i laughed out loud like five different times reading this. hilarious and sweet on all sides. (and if you like this, check out their timkon road trip fic!)
🌾 A Saturday Evening by malcyon in which tim visits the kent farm for family dinner with kon, feat. very sweet established relationship timkon and fun superfamily dynamics, and it touches on tim’s past grief over kon’s death (and complicated feelings post-undeath).
🤼‍♂️ Sore Loser by @hearteyeshayley kon learns that tim always let him win while sparring, and has to process that. this was such a fun exploration of tim’s prowess as a fighter—one who regularly has to go up against superpowered friends and foes alike—and also tim as a person who is always doing mental calculations about the people around him (in an endearing way). kon, too, got his time to shine and grow, and the ending was so smart and sweet.
🔮 Ascension by Violet_Witch an AU longfic where tim is a witchling and kon is a fallen angel who has (oops) just lost his wings. tim sets out to help get kon’s wings back, and there’s a ticking clock because angel wings are dangerous in the wrong hands—and tim has a big, horrible secret that’s about to come due. the plot/worldbuilding of this was WILDLY cool, and there was a big ol misunderstanding in the middle that had me clawing my face off (in a good way).
🌌 straight on ’til morning by merils kon vs. the terrifying ordeal of growing up, feat. sweet friends-to-lovers timkon and really thoughtful exploration of some of kon’s canon past relationships and their abusive dynamics. i haven’t finished this one yet but it’s been rec’d multiple times and i’m excited to dive back in (and it's recently complete!)—and what i have read so far gave me an amazing sequence of kon and dick interacting and dick’s big brother mode activating in an instant, which is something i now desperately need more of.
📧 aaaand would it even be a reclist by me if i didn’t include send to all by @cairoscene the absolute moment i find myself feeling down i go reread this and boom. i am instantly laughing again. timkon are just one part of a bat grab-bag here but they are so so funny and cute and in-character. maybe one day i’ll compile the timkon-centric sequel that exists in my head but for now i’ll just go reread this for the zillionth time.
okay yeah!! i’m probably missing so many good fics here because i constantly have like a zillion tabs open that i plan to read someday. also i reserve the right to reblog later like OH I FORGOT— but in the meanwhile, happy timkon reading!

mid-year book freakout tag
I’ve read 81 books so far this year! I like to look back on my last half of the year and see what kind of books have stuck with me! I stole these questions from YouTube. Here are my answers from last year.
best book you’ve read so far in 2023? I'm going with the Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison (graphic here!) & It's OK That You're Not OK by Megan Devine, Goblin Emperor is about a young goblin who unexpectedly becomes emperor after his estranged father dies. It's about fantasy politics and learning court intrigue, but it's also about kindness. It's OK is about grief and I felt very seen.
best sequel you’ve read so far in 2023? Don't Fear the Reaper by Stephen Graham Jones (graphic here). This series is about Jade Daniels, an outcast Indigenous teen who is obsessed with slasher movies. She begins to recognize the signs of an impending slasher coming to her town, and she attempts to stop it.
new release you haven’t read yet, but want to: Painted Devils by Margaret Owen is the sequel to one of my very favorite fairy tale retellings. To Shape a Dragon's Breath by Monquill Blackgoose is a about a young Indigenous woman who enters a dragon academy. I'm waiting for both of these to come into my library!
most anticipated release for the second half of the year: My two most anticipated books are Family Lore by Elizabeth Acevedo, the adult debut of one of my all time favorite YA authors; The Reformatory by Tananarive Due, an absolute staple author of horror. I read a nonfiction book based on a similar real-life event and I know Due is going to bring such depth to the idea.
biggest surprise: The Bandit Queens by Parini Shroff was a book I picked up on a whim and ended up being one of my favorites of the year!
favorite new author (debut or new to you): Either Tre'vell Anderson for their nonfiction book We See Each Other about trans representation in media, or Jumata Emill's the Black Queen.
newest favorite character: Oh definitely my sweet Maia from the Goblin Emperor.
book that made you cry: Hide and Seeker by Daka Harmon is a delightful middle grade horror, in which the main character is dealing with a monster as well as the death of his mother, and some of the grief stuff made me cry.
book that made you happy: The Witchlings series makes me so happy!
most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received): Probably a special edition of The Song of Achilles.
what books do you need to read by the end of the year? Waiting at the library for me right now are Hamra and the Jungle of Memories and Empire of Exiles!

I'm revisiting my (inner) '90s teen witchling/babygoth and having a little The Craft rewatch.
(Yes, I always get a strong impulse to write a sequel. No, I still haven't written it)

I would love to see what happens next for Witchling should you write a sequel for it. Especially when their paths cross again and what would happen between them.
I think I probably will at this point. I’ve written a bunch of Morpheus/Witchling “he finds out he hurt you” interactions so here’s one for fun.
You’ve never dreamed of a library before. It’s beautiful, with massive ornately carved shelves that tower over you.
You round a corner to find a woman sitting at a table. She’s leaning over a large book, her finger following a line of text along the pages.
It’s not just a book. It’s your grimoire.
You gasp, and she looks around, startled until her eyes find you. Her smile is soft, even friendly as she stands.
“Hello, dreamer.” Your mouth goes dry. Dreamer? She looks down at your hands, the mess of your scarred, skeletal limbs, and her smile falters, just slightly. Shame, and disgust, curdles in your stomach.
“That’s… that’s mine. That’s- how did you get that?” Her smile fades, confusion and apprehension pinching her eyebrows into the middle of her forehead. She opens her mouth to say something, but stops, her gaze flicking towards the end of the shelves. Your nose tingles and you turn to look at whatever it is that stole her attention.
It’s him. He’s standing at the end of row. And he looks, different somehow. Lethal, and yet still beautiful. Your breath starts coming in sharp pants, fear slithering across your skin. It’s just a dream. The power in the room pulses, and as you blink, he’s standing right in front of you. You shrink backwards instinctively, stunned for a moment, and you reach inside yourself to push your own magic out towards him. Before you can even cast it, a vice clamps down on you, strangling your power, restraining it. You look up at him in a daze, expecting to find his callous gaze on yours.
He’s not looking at your face, or your eyes. He’s staring at your forearms, your hands. Your mottled, melted flesh that is missing in chunks, exposing the gleam of bone underneath. It’s gruesome, the aftermath of the spell. His lips are pressed into a firm line, and you can just barely see a muscle in his jaw ticking. His eyes flick up towards yours, and you’re shocked to see an array of emotions behind them. Confusion. Surprise. Rage.
“Who did this to you?”
“You did.”

Rules: Post the names of all the files in your WIP folder, regardless of how non-descriptive or ridiculous. Let people send you an ask with the title that most intrigues them and then post a little snippet of it or tell them something about it! Tag as many people as you have WIPs.
This one will be an open tag to any who see! For reasons that will become immediately apparent oh my god I don't think I've even talked to as many people on this website as I have WIPs. For sanity's sake I'm leaving off anything that is complete-but-not-posted, going to be posted anonymously, or a WIP that is posting in progress.

I finished reading the second Witchlings book “The Golden Frog Games” two days ago. It was SO good! If you haven’t read the first book and it’s sequel yet, why?! This cute middle grade book follows Seven and her Spares coven as they try to figure out who’s hexing competitors of The Golden Frog Games, while also on their journey of growing up, trying to help get other Spares the equality they deserve with other covens, and leaning into their special skills more and learning to love themselves for who they are more.
I can’t wait for more books in this series from Claribel Ortega to come out. And I’m so excited my oldest started reading the first book last night.

Happy October friends!
Welcome aboard this month-long Halloween Special.  Come aboard if you dare :)
Story Summary:
Once, there was a woman who roamed the lands she called her own. She had her people who kept her company, and her children, born in time, who would one day succeed her. Her child of the North was strong, as the winter winds and the evergreen forests. Her children of the South were as fierce as their deserts, and as adaptable as the storms that churned along coastlines and sands alike.
Her children of the midlands were little bonfires rooted in the dance of air and the churn of the earth, and flexible for their lives were always changing. They burned brightly and burned out quickly, if they did not learn to temper themselves as she had once learned at her own Mother's knee.
But her little bonfires were hunted. Stalked and coaxed and devoured, child after child after child, until only one child was left. The only child left to take up the mantle of her midlands as she faltered and faded, and he was hunted still.
Alfred Jones had been hunted since the moment he was born. He'd escaped the entity before, by luck and a parent's protective fury.
But now his luck had run down, and run out, and he was alone against the shadow that sought the bonfire of the sun at his core.

Loki's Witchlings
TITLE: Loki’s Witchlings (Loki and the Witchling part 2)
CHAPTER NO./ONE SHOT: 39/?
AUTHOR: nekoamamori
ORIGINAL IMAGINE: Imagine you’re a healer working with the Avengers when Loki comes to join the team
RATING: T (so far)
NOTES/WARNINGS: This is a direct sequel to Loki and the Witchling.  Also on AO3 click here
You left Loki to the task of getting the realm back in order from the chaos of Hela’s visit and Odin being stripped of his title.  You had other work to do.  Hogun and Thor carried the two valkyrie to the healing wing, following you there.  In Frigga’s absence, you were ruler of the healing wing.  You would take over for her when she was ready to step down.  You had a feeling that now that Odin had been stripped of his titles, that day would come sooner than anticipated.
Everything had a price.
At the moment, the price was coming due for your return to the land of the living.  Everything was moving so fast.  You’d prepared for this, but it never felt like enough.  You’d thought that you would have more time.  Instead, you had to put on your big girl panties and deal with the new responsibilities that had fallen into your lap.
And worry about being queen later.
Right now, you had valkyrie to heal.
You led the boys to one of the rooms in the healing wing.  This particular room had two beds already set up and you thanked the Norns for having competent assistants sometimes.  Thor and Hogun laid the valkyrie carefully in the beds while you called for your assistants.  You kicked Thor and Hogun out and quickly got to work assessing Hugin and Munin and healing them.  They were severely malnourished and weak from their service to Odin.  He’d kept them trapped in raven form for far too long.  It left them weak, left them trapped at the ages that they’d been when he’d ordered them in one form.
It wasn’t hard to get them stabilized, your magic was strong, stronger here than on Midgard, but it would be awhile before they were back up to full strength.
The valkyrie looked to be teenagers, younger than you, closer to Wanda’s age.  Though you knew they were centuries and centuries older than you and Loki.  They both had raven black hair.  That was about where the similarities ended.  You knew that at one point, they’d been fierce warriors.  Now they were frail, emaciated, haunted.  One of them looked older than the other, stern, like a young Professor McGonagall.  That one, you learned, was Hugin.  Munin seemed kinder and more innocent.
You worked for hours healing them, bringing them back to health.  They would have to work to regain lost muscle and strength, but you would give them as much magical help as you could.
“Hela sent you back to help us,” Hugin said, hours later when both women were sitting up eating a hearty stew and bread.  It wasn’t a comment.  She somehow knew of your bargain with Hela.
You nodded and your wings shifted behind you.  “Hela agreed to send me back if I would help her and help the valkyrie,”
Hugin considered that while she continued working on her meal.  From what you could gather, it was one of the first proper meals she’d had in ages.  Both valkyrie were savoring it.  “Our sisters were killed when Odin forced them to fight their Queen.  We’re bound to the throne of Asgard, but Hela is our patron goddess.  Our loyalties span between those two places,” she explained to you.  “There was no way the valkyrie would win a war against Hela.  He sent them to die.  All of our sisters, besides us,”
“How could he do such a thing?” You asked, horrified.  Hugin had spoken the words matter of factly, but you could see the pain in her eyes at the memory of watching the other valkyrie go off to die.
“It was the only way to weaken Hela enough for him to banish her.  The cost was too high and our queen did not deserve such treatment.  Not when her only crime was being what Odin made her.  He has a habit of banishing and hiding problems instead of dealing with them.  He banished Hela, banished Thor, hid the truth about Loki’s heritage.  All of his problems could have been avoided so easily,” Hugin said, clearly displeased with Odin.  You didn’t blame her.  Odin had deserved what he’d gotten.
You nodded and sighed.  “Hela wishes for the valkyrie to be welcome and return to Asgard.  Of course, they are welcome, but… I don’t know how to do the rest,” you admitted.  You and Loki would gladly welcome the valkyrie back to Asgard, if they would come.
Hugin smirked up at you and you saw fight and determination in her eyes.  She would rebuild everything with you to how it should be and fight by your side.  “First, Munin and I will heal.  We will teach you what it means to be a valkyrie, reopen the training grounds here,”
Munin perked up, eager, innocent, so very young looking.  “And then we will welcome our sisters home,” she said softly, her voice ethereal and dream-like.  Her mind needed to heal from being in raven form for so long as her body did.
As both of them did.
You gave them both grateful looks, relieved and awed by them. “Thank you, both.  I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it-“
Hugin held up her hand.  “Don’t thank us yet, fledgling.  There is a lot for you to learn before you’re ready to call yourself a valkyrie,”
You saw the sternness in her eyes that reminded you again of Professor McGonagall and knew unequivocally that you were very, very fucked.

Mid-Year Book Freakout Tag
I’ve read 109 books so far this year! I like to look back on my last half of the year and see what kind of books have stuck with me! I stole these questions from YouTube.
best book you’ve read so far in 2022? A few of the top: Black Sheep, Piranesi, Little Thieves, Passing, Pet, The Final Revival of Opal & Nev, Kaikeyi, Warbreaker, Scout’s Honor, Legends & Lattes, Giovanni’s Room, Witchlings, Someone Who Will Love You in All of Your Damaged Glory
best sequel you’ve read so far in 2022? Jade Legacy by Fonda Lee. Nobody look at me. Nobody talk to me.
new release you haven’t read yet, but want to: I’m doing okay keeping up with new releases, but the two I have waiting at the library are Nettle and Bone (a fairy tale esque fantasy about a young woman intent on killing a wicked prince) and A Lady for a Duke, a historical romance featuring a trans heroine.
most anticipated release for the second half of the year: SO many! I have a huge list of upcoming books, and July - September have some great horror novels coming out. Some of my very top choices are: The Ballad of Perilous Graves, Don’t Fear the Reaper, The Daughter of Doctor Moreau
biggest surprise: This year I’m attempting to read a classic per month, and I’m constantly surprised by how much I genuinely enjoy so many of them! I know that’s silly, since they are classics for a reason, but so many times I am surprised by how readable/relevant they are.
favorite new author (debut or new to you): Gabrielle Union! I devoured both of her memoirs and found her FASCINATING and an incredible writer. I was always a fan of her acting, now I will read anything else she releases.
newest fictional crush: Maybe not a crush, but my favorite new character is Piranesi from Piranesi.
book that made you cry: Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt is a book about a grumpy octopus in an aquarium who becomes friends with an elderly widow. So good, so sweet.
book that made you happy: Witchlings by Claribel A. Ortega, a middle grade fantasy about a group of young witches who are sort of shunned by their town.
most beautiful book you’ve bought so far this year (or received): i didn’t buy this book but I borrowed Slewfoot from the library and I was obsessed with the incredible illustrations and also just the unique size of the book, I don’t know if I’ve ever read a book in that size.
what books do you need to read by the end of the year? I have a huge google doc in which I track the upcoming releases I’m most excited for, and there are just so many. Would you guys be interested in a more posts about new releases? I will say the classic I’m most excited to tackle in the upcoming months is The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, although I’m saving it for a colder month. I don’t know why, but the Brontes always seem like cold weather books for me.

2.  Is your novel part of a series?  What do you need to plan in order to make it all tie nicely together?
=D
So the project I’m currently fucking w/ is Voidsong: Rise of the Warbringer, which is a direct sequel to Voidsong: The Witchling and picks up just moments after The Witchling ended.  Rise of the Warbringer follows the same cast of main characters doing a bunch of stuff they already talked about, so I’m not worried about tying those nicely together b/c it’s pretty much one story in two parts.
The one that’s going to require the most planning is the third installment, Voidsong: Twilight of the Gods.  The Witchling is only novella-length and Rise of the Warbringer is probably going to end up being of similar scope, so if all goes according to plan (fingers crossed) I’ll probably be dipping into that one as well before November’s over.  Twilight of the Gods involves an interstellar war, a very complicated character arc for everyone’s favorite space witch, and the apocalypse, so that’s far more ambitious and will prolly require a deal more work to tie in.  If all goes according to plan, it should also be a direct continuation of the previous installment, but y’know these things so rarely go according to plan.

Will there be a sequel to the Witchling?
I don’t know! Should there be? I never really thought about it being more than a one shot but I can see there being some potential for a second part, storyline wise.

Kat, an original story with the greatest fanfic tropes is gonna be so good, I genuinely cannot wait
bahaha why thank you 😂💖 tbh i love throwing in tropes from fanfic bc it's always fun to find new ways to include them so even people who don't read fanfic can enjoy them. (it's the same reason i enjoy writing romcoms. i love finding ways to making a genre i don't predominately read fun to write, especially when the romcom won't include magic, as my next one won't.)
anyway, i'll be sharing my witchling wip on ao3 at some point this year! one POV (Brim) is almost done but paused while i catch up to that moment in the other POV (Griv), and then it'll just need some thorough editing. still not sure how much i'll share, bc i do hope to publish the book one day (as well as its sequels), but my career plan w my agent doesn't factor in an Adult epic fantasy just yet (which is a good thing; Adult epic fantasies are hard to sell to publishers and even harder to make stand out) and i want to share it anyway.
