I am not entirely certain what will happen once the actors & writers strike ends, but I'm pretty sure Michael Sheen will break the sound barrier with how fast he will go feral on the internets about how Aziraphale wants to eat Crowley's ox rib

European regions wetter or drier than London.
by hunmapper
London's reputation as a perpetually rainy city has its roots in a combination of climatic patterns, historical anecdotes, and perhaps a touch of British humor. The city does experience a fair share of rainfall throughout the year, with damp and overcast days contributing to the stereotype. London's maritime climate, influenced by its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, results in relatively mild temperatures but also brings about frequent and unpredictable showers.

Hey Texans (and others in the US)!
We’re expected to have a freeze and harsh weather this week and/or next week (check your local forecast for specifics). Make sure you have some extra water storage, non perishable foods, blankets, and maybe some hand warmers in case our local or state power supply gets fucking destroyed again.
Make sure to at least set your heat to 55°F, keep cabinets with pipes in them open to allow heat in, and drip your faucets to help prevent pipes bursting.
It’s not anything to be scared about, and not likely to be as bad as 2021, but always better to prepared.
There might be snow in the panhandle today, though!

I was surprised that my solutions didn't crystallize over the past week to which my thesis supervisor said lightheartedly that it's normal and that he once waited for something to crystallize for THREE YEARS. I hope my solutions know I need to graduate some day.

But also something so ! about how John Irving, the character with most faith thus most faith to be tested, is the one to find the salvation, the divine providence, the literal manna in the desert, of Koveyook and his party, taking it in with humility and gratitude is just. Irving really did get to see a form of God in the way William Blake wrote it:
“I sought my God and my God I couldn't find; I sought my soul and my soul eluded me; I sought to serve my brother in his need, and I found all three; My God, my soul, and thee.”

Tumblr media
Some months ago, I created a series of maps and diagrams for @iguanodont‘s Birdbug worldbuilding project, representing the planet inhabited by their original species and its planetological data. This isn’t the first time I mapped out this planet, as I was also commissioned by Ripley back in 2020 back when I didn’t have nearly as much experience and knowledge as I do now. Two years later, I’ve been commissioned once again to revisit this world and its peculiarities.
Tumblr media
This first map (in Equirectangular projection and poles-centered perspective) depicts the elevation for this planet, with a color gradient applied to the data.
Tumblr media
Here is the same elevation data, presented without the color gradient.
Tumblr media
This time, the elevation is presented with bodies of liquid water included, such as rivers, oceans, and lakes.
Tumblr media
and in this one, the water is isolated from the other data, against a white background
Tumblr media
Next, there are the surface temperatures that occur on this planet, the key to which is shown above. The four maps below show the seasonal temperatures for land and sea, in order of Northern Spring Equinox, Northern Summer Solstice, Northern Autumn Equinox, and Northern Winter Solstice.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Correlating closely to the above data is the snow and ice cover, which is fairly extensive on this planet owing to its high obliquity and distance from its star. Land ice only occurs where the snow falls and is compacted year-round, but snow and sea ice can be much more seasonal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Seasonal precipitation levels were another important phase of this project, and the below diagram shows those levels for a given latitude (y-axis) on a given date (x-axis), with a key attached.
Tumblr media
My reference for creating the above graphic is the figure below, which comes from a 2019 paper by A.H. Lobo and S. Bordoni titled “Atmospheric Dynamics of High Obliquity Planets”, and shows Earth’s precipitation levels compared to those of a planet with an 85° obliquity.
Tumblr media
The following maps can now be better understood in light of these diagrams and keys.
Tumblr media
-Northern Spring Equinox
Tumblr media
-Northern Summer Solstice
Tumblr media
-Northern Autumn Equinox
Tumblr media
-Northern Winter Solstice
I was also tasked with mapping out the extent and density of this planet’s vegetation (or at least its alien equivalent), and from this you can see how wildly it varies by season, with very few year-round holdings. Precipitation is a major factor in where it is possible for plants to flourish, but snow cover and the extreme temperature swings limit it too. Near either pole, for example, within the space of a year temperatures soar far above Earth’s upper limits and also plummet below freezing; if either extreme were to be the annual norm for a region, some plants might adapt to those conditions, but because of the wild fluctuation any adaptations to one extreme would leave plants especially vulnerable to the other. These regions, then, remain barren regardless of rainfall or brief windows of mild temperatures, while areas with less wide temperature ranges allow for at least brief periods of flourishing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Determining the surface temperatures for this planet required a lot of background work. The first piece of the puzzle for this was knowing the number of daily hours of sunlight for a given latitude and date, which is exemplified first in this diagram for Earth:
Tumblr media
and then for the Birdbug planet, below. Since this planet rotates on an axis of 60 degrees, there are many more latitudes within range of either pole that experience periods of sunlight and darkness lasting longer than a day. The higher the latitude, the longer this period lasts, with the poles themselves experiencing either condition for half a year at a time.
Tumblr media
Another important factor is the height to which the sun is seen to rise (more scientifically, the angle at which the sun’s light hits parts of the planet’s surface), seen here first for Earth and then for the Birdbug planet. In these diagrams, white represents the sun reaching the zenith of the sky (meeting the surface at a 90° angle), and black represents the sun failing to appear above the horizon (meeting at an angle of 0° or below), while shades of green and purple stand in for angles between those extremes. For Earth and the Birdbug planet alike, the sun reaches the zenith within the bounds of either planet’s Tropic circles of latitude, and fails to rise at all only within the Polar circles of latitude; the difference in obliquity means that the Birdbug planet’s key circles of latitude are flipped compared to Earth’s.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The duration of sunlight and the angle at which that sunlight is reaches the planet’s surface determine a planet’s Insolation, that is, the amount of solar energy it receives. The first image below is a preexisting diagram of Earth’s Insolation, where it is measured in watts per square meter. The next two images are my own attempts at replicating this data for Earth, and then for the Birdbug planet.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As seen in the diagrams above, Insolation on the Birdbug planet differs from Earth not only in its latitudinal distribution, but also in its sheer intensity at the higher latitudes. Compared to Earth there are twice as many latitudes for which the sun is shining longer than one rotational period, and many of those latitudes see the sun shine at a direct or nearly direct angle, whereas the Polar circles of latitude on Earth see the sun shine much more obliquely. Below, we can see the data that all the above figures were instrumental in finding: that is, surface temperatures. The first image is a preexisting figure that measures Earth’s mean surface temperatures by date and latitude, and below that is my attempt at replicating the data by my own process.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is done not by just copying the seasonal Insolation data, but by also factoring in the yearly average for each latitude.
Tumblr media
Above, we see the temperatures of the land by date and latitude, and below, we see the temperatures at the surface of the sea, which lag behind the land temperatures and remain comparatively mild.
Tumblr media
Lastly, here’s an image I created to combine the snow and ice cover as well as the vegetation extent and density, as of the Northern Spring Equinox.  This, along with the elevation map also seen here, is what I uploaded to maptoglobe.com in order to produce the screenshot at the top of this post.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These maps and figures (except for the preexisting ones) were all created in Photopea.  Higher resolution versions of many of these images can be seen in my dedicated Reddit posts, linked below: reddit post one, reddit post two

There is more to Tolkien's work than his Catholicism.
I think there's a general tendency in many areas of fandom - fandom broadly, I'm also think academic work and reddit; this post isn't aimed at tumblr fandom specifically. in fact probably a bit more aimed at reddit but there was no precipitating incident that's leading me to write this. Anyways, a general tendency to over-weight the influence of Christianity in his work? Especially when it comes to finding allegories (Andreth talking about her people's beliefs in the Athrabeth is the only thing I think that is one, and Tolkien in his notes talked about how it was too Christian and wanted to change it), but more generally too. And sometimes I think Catholicism is brought into the text in ways that really aren't there. Idk.
Also... I think there is a way that him himself as a creator is. Hmm. I don't want to say under-discussed because it's not. But his work is more than the sum of his influences?

Is Win still traumatized by Team’s near-drowning? I think so because the face he makes right before Team is about to compete reminds me of the scene when he was worried as he saw Team swimming for the first time after almost drowning. Either way though, he’s determined to give Team support, so he smiles in encouragement when Team looks for him.
Then he drives his motorcycle for 2 hours in the rain because he got a phone call from Team, just to hear:
Tumblr media
And yet, Win just holds Team. He doesn’t interrogate Team, he doesn’t lash out at him, or tell him to stop speaking nonsense. He let’s Team grieve and holds him. He understands that Team is emotionally compromised, and he doesn’t give a thought for himself. Even though just a few episodes ago, he was struggling with his own fears of losing Team.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Win does such a thorough job of showing just how important Team is to him. If Team needs him, he will disregard himself and show up, especially since he failed to be there for Team and found him suffering from nightmares on the hard hallway floor outside a locked door. And I’m just here hoping, praying that we get to see the day Team will be there to support Win when he really needs it.

pacing and muttering again
“cinder, i am going to ask you this one more time, and i expect a clear answer. did you… kill ozpin?”
an unknown amount of time prior to this conversation, salem named ozpin’s death as the most important of cinder’s successes at beacon.
cinder did in fact kill ozpin, by melting his face into the floor, and has no reason to doubt herself on this point.
cinder is quick to claim her victories, even to the point of eliding help she received from others, but reports her failures in whatever manner she thinks will be most advantageous to herself.
salem can tell when people lie to her.
salem has been trying—seemingly for several months—to get a “clear answer” out of cinder regarding whether she did or did not kill ozpin.
which is a yes or no question.
if the answer was “yes” or “no” and salem didn’t believe that, she would be saying “i expect a truthful answer.”
salem does apparently take it as fact that ozpin is dead, or else she wouldn’t have emphasized his death in her praise of cinder’s accomplishments.
the point of contention is whether cinder killed him.
the answer is yes.
salem has repeatedly asked the question “did you kill ozpin?” and cinder has, up until this point, refused to give a straight answer—perhaps saying “he’s dead” or “i beat him”—which is peculiar because 1. salem seems to believe that ozpin is dead, 2. ozpin really is dead and cinder killed him, and 3. salem praises cinder for killing ozpin in front of the inner circle.
why has this question become an ongoing point of contention between them which cinder, evidently, is not willing to answer plainly? why, when salem asks “did you kill ozpin,” is cinder afraid to answer “yes”—despite the glowing praise salem gives her for killing ozpin, which cinder did in fact do?
she wasn’t supposed to.
like—it’s either that or cinder left ozpin alive enough behind herself to think he might have survived, which… do we believe that little miss the floor is lava now left without reducing him to a smear of charcoal first? and then shot pyrrha in the heart and incinerated her for good measure? cinder “no kill like overkill” fall? is it plausible to think that she did not know with absolute certainty that ozpin was dead?—whereas,
”that stunt you pulled; she’d have killed you if you wouldn’t just pop up somewhere else.”
hazel’s perception of who salem is may or may not be accurate, and he’s probably making an assumption here based on the intensity of salem’s reaction to learning that ozpin was back, but regardless: the possibility that salem might have wanted ozpin alive so that she’d know where he is has been textually stated. “did you… kill ozpin?”—and cinder is afraid to answer “yes.”
if those seers are something new salem devised after beacon tower fell, for the sake of being able to contact her agents over long distances without the CCTS—and emerald and mercury do react like they’ve never seen one before, and watts does treat the seer like a novelty in v5—then it is entirely possible that the seer in 4.3 is the first time salem has received a report from summer since the fall.
she leans over, listens to what summer tells her, and then tells cinder point blank, this time you are going to give me a clear yes or no. no, not through her—i want to hear you say it.
cinder, cornered:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
either ozpin wasn’t supposed to die that night or salem didn’t want cinder, specifically, to kill him. salem knows he’s dead and that cinder killed him—cinder wouldn’t be this cagey otherwise—but she wants cinder to tell her.
this is probably the first time cinder’s disobeyed salem—or at least failed to follow orders to the letter, if cinder didn’t deliberately set out to kill him but realized their fight wasn’t going to end until one of them was dead—and after months of letting her dodge, salem just backed her into a corner. she’s terrified.
and then nothing bad happens. salem more or less just goes…ok. and moves on.
rolls over.
“i’m not especially fond of failure” / “then i see no reason for your cruelty toward young cinder; she’s become our fall maiden, destroyed beacon tower, and most importantly, killed dear ozpin… so i’m curious: to what failures are you referring?”
<- acquires a completely different subtext if killing ozpin was an act of disobedience that cinder has so far been unwilling to admit.
salem would have preferred ozpin alive as a known quantity over the uncertainty of not knowing when or where he might return, or she had specific concerns about cinder fighting him which are now largely moot; in either case he’s dead and she’s decided to take that as a victory. she isn’t upset or angry. but she does want cinder to tell her the truth.
she’s not stupid. she is undoubtedly aware that cinder is afraid of what salem will do to her if/when she confesses.
“then i see no reason for your cruelty toward young cinder; she’s become our fall maiden, destroyed beacon tower, and killed ozpin”—salem holds eye contact with cinder the whole time she’s saying this. it’s a message for cinder as much as it is watts: i know you killed him, it is of no consequence, i will not be cruel to you. days, weeks, however much longer it is, she corners cinder and then just moves on without so much as a word of rebuke.
compare:
Tumblr media
what she does when hazel lies to her. 4.3 and 6.4 are identical circumstances in that salem already knows the answer and what matters to her is that her subordinate tells the truth, with 4.3 demonstrating how she answers honesty (no consequences at all) and 6.4 the spectacle she makes of punishing a lie.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(<- same posture, same intent.)
it speaks to how much lenience salem gives cinder that she does not extend to anyone else, because she gives hazel just two chances (“i would like you to explain to me how it is you failed so spectacularly,” and then when hazel skirts around it, “stop. let me rephrase the question: who is responsible for your defeat?”) whereas she lets cinder evade the “did you kill ozpin?” question for, apparently, months whilst making a point of signaling to cinder that she already knows and will not be angry before she finally puts her foot down and insists on a straight answer.
salem knows cinder lied to her about what happened while she was reconstituting. the exact moment she clocks it is when cinder says “i couldn’t even stop the maiden from escaping without putting the relics in jeopardy”—
Tumblr media Tumblr media
—she knows. but she knew in v4 that cinder’s caginess came from a place of fear, and made an effort to allay that fear before forcing the issue. (also: “it can sense your trepidation; don’t fight it, girl. you must make it dread you” is a very thinly-veiled “don’t be afraid”). by the end of v8 salem is aware of both cinder’s fear and the intensity of cinder’s resentment; what rapport existed between them before haven is gone and the relationship is badly fractured.
so she is being Delicate.
which isn’t the same as letting cinder get away with the deception; she’s still going to want cinder to tell her the truth.
but she’s going to handle it the way she handled “did you kill ozpin?” and i anticipate that will be the fulcrum of whatever happens between her and cinder during the beacon arc (villains edition), because salem’s practical interest in the relics is secondary to her emotional investment in honesty. and of course there’s the symbol of cinder being the one who knows jinn’s name—if salem wants the truth she needs to first earn real trust, not just the veneer she gained in v4-5 and then shattered in v8.
