On Banshees, Death, Love, & Foreshadowing
A few Thinky Thoughts about 3x23 (Insatiable) and 3x24 (The Divine Move)... but surprisingly not Dergent-related this time (Stydia- and Scallison-related instead). =)
I foster a deep, abiding love for narrative parallels, and that's probably one of the many reasons Teen Wolf continues to appeal to me, despite its many flaws: this show has narrative parallels in abundance, and the more you watch, the more connections you make. If you're me, every single re-watch looks like you shouting "Oooh! OOOHHHH!" at the TV screen while gesticulating wildly, sending your startled cat flying off your lap for the fifth time just this episode.
(I mean... I do that with lots of shows, actually, but y'know... hyperfixation and all that. Ahem. Anyway.)
There's something really painfully beautiful about the way Allison tells Scott it's perfect that she's dying "in the arms of [her] first love" in 3x23 - that he is "the first person [she] ever loved... the person [she] will always love" - and then dies in his arms while he cries over her body... followed by the camera changing to show us Lydia screaming Allison's name and then crying, slumped over the fading, unconscious body of Stiles... Stiles, who, for all they - and we - know at this point, is going to die, too. Lydia - Stiles' first love, the person he will always love - is shown weeping over Stiles' body in a way that parallels Scott weeping over Allison's body.
Damn.
(One could also argue that, in the same way Allison was Scott’s first true love, Stiles eventually becomes Lydia's first true love. Did Lydia love Jackson? Absolutely... but, as she tells Allison, not "like that". What she eventually comes to feel for Stiles by S6 is the first romantic love she experiences that is like the love Allison describes feeling for Scott in 2x06: "Remember what it feels like? All of those times in school when you see him standing down the hall, and you cannot breathe until you're with him? Or those times in class when you... you can't stop looking at the clock because you know that he's standing right out there waiting for you? Don't you remember what that's like?")
And then there's the parallel of the way Lydia and Stiles spend much of the next episode clinging to each other, and the way Scott’s last scene in 3x24 shows him bringing Malia into his pack and teaching her how to control her shift. Lydia and Stiles, who end up together by the end of the series, bonding... and Scott and Malia, who end up together by the end of the series, bonding.
There's also the parallel of Lydia's previous love interest (Aiden) dying in 3x24, with her reacting by flinging herself into the arms of her future love interest (Stiles)... while Scott’s previous love interest (Allison) dies in 3x23, and we then see him connecting with his future love interest (Malia) in 3x24.
Allison being Lydia's best friend, and Stiles being Scott’s, just makes the Scott/Allison + Lydia/Stiles parallel that much more powerful. The rescue mission to save Lydia and Stiles from the Nogitsune results in Lydia losing her best friend and Scott very nearly losing his; while Lydia wasn't able to save Allison - although she certainly tried (she even left a hidden message on the inside of her car window, knowing that was how Scott and Allison used to communicate, clearly hoping Allison would think to check for it... maybe Lydia even taught her that technique?) - Scott is able to save Stiles (with the help of his pack, plus some... including some who eventually become part of his pack, like Derek and Chris). Plus we get the further parallel of Lydia, who tried so hard to save her best friend in 3b, but ultimately couldn't... and Scott, who tried so hard to save his best friend in S6, but ultimately couldn't.
Could any - or all - of this have been intentional foreshadowing? Foreshadowing of the events of S6? Of Stiles being taken and erased by the Ghostriders? Of Lydia's love - and banshee powers - ultimately being what brings him back? Of Stydia ending up together and Scalia ending up together? Could it even have been intentional foreshadowing of Allison's highly hypothetical - but potential - future return? (J*ff Davis has said that he has always wanted to bring Allison back. In the teaser trailer for Teen Wolf: The Movie, we see Lydia, all bansheed out, screaming Allison's name... and then we see that Allison has indeed returned (in some form/capacity); does Lydia maybe have a hand in bringing her back as well? Does Scott maybe get his first love back? I guess we'll see.)
Anyway. It's unclear how much - if any - of these narrative parallels were intentional (foreshadowing doesn't have to be intentional on the writer's part in order to qualify as foreshadowing), but, intentional or not, these connections certainly are interesting to think about... especially when your brain thinks like Stiles' and a) delights in picking apart all the little threads that weave a narrative together, and b) likes solving cases problems and eventually arriving at some sort of closure/conclusion.
