Cuddling with the Stranger Things Older Teens

I’ve been thinking about this for a very long time and decided to write this to revive my tumblr 😭 I will be doing one for the party too :D (also shoutout to all the shifters who see this let this serve as motivation for your adventures)

In order- Robin, Steve, Eddie, Nancy, Jonathan, and Argyle

Robin

It's very easy for her to get comfortable in any position. You’re elbow stabbing her stomach? She’s fine! You’re laying on her throat? If she can still breathe she’s good!

This is amplified especially if she’s already rambling on about something because she is more focused on not trying to sound stupid in front of you

In between thoughts, she’ll ask if you’re still comfortable or if she needs to move

“You’re still ok right?” “Yeah I’m fine” “Are you sure? Like 100% sure. Because I can move like I’m totally fine with moving, it's really easy.”

Would definitely be more like a base for you to snuggle up to because she moves her hands around to talk a lot

If you were the one sitting up she’d just lean her head against you as she keeps talking

After she’s been talking for a while if she needs a break she’ll just lay there in silence for a few minutes before continuing on

If you fell asleep she would definitely freeze up until you woke up

Overall a comfortable experience and you’d probably get to hear all about whatever she was obsessed with at the moment

Steve

He’d probably be a little hesitant because he’s not incredibly touchy, but since Dustin is he sort of learned to be

Touch starved growing up so he does not know how to accept it

His default would be to just hug you, but he’d move however you moved, trying his best to not make it awkward and to not ‘mess up’ as he’d say

Would fake confidence because he’s dated many girls in the past, but he honestly does not know what he’s doing

If he ever ended up uncomfortable he would ignore it and would deny his discomfort at all costs

“Steve, are you ok?” “Of course! Why do you ask?” “You’re tearing up” “Those are happy tears because I’m so comfortable!”

He’d somehow get you to believe him, either that or you’d have to hide your movement so he doesn’t end up feeling bad

Would get very cuddly and would probably end up sharing his innermost thoughts with you

He’s a weirdly comfortable person like a giant pillow so you’d get sleepy really fast, his hair is also really soft so that’s a plus

If he did fall asleep he’d make sure you did first to make sure you’re ok

10/10 you both end up asleep

Eddie

Always, and I mean always up to cuddle with literally anyone he knows, yes it’s because he’s touch starved but in the opposite way of Steve where he’s very touchy

Would pretend you’re weird for asking but, of course, he’s joking

“You wanna ‘cuddle’ with me?” “Yeah” “That’s so weird wth” “Oh” “I’m kidding, IM KIDDING”

Latches onto you immediately and won’t let go until you let go

He moves around a lot until he gets comfortable and you will probably end up as his pillow whether you like it or not

Makes sure his hair isn’t all over your face because it does that a lot

He wouldn’t ask you if you were ok with him talking a lot he would just give you a look and you’d sort of have to notice

“Eddie?” “Hm?” “Would you like to say something?” “Yes, ok so-“

Would whisper “are you sleeping?” in your ear a little too close and would get really apologetic if he accidentally woke you up

A very fluffy person 10/10 experience

Nancy

She is not a very touchy person at all and would be very reluctant to say yes and would probably resolve with an “ok but only for a few minutes”

However if she was working and you asked she’d absentmindedly say yes without really thinking about what she’s agreed too

At the beginning she’d just sit down and she would be very awkward about everything but after a little while she’d warm up to you

You’d be able to tell when she’s comfortable because she’d stop tensing up and just relax

She would have her eyes closed very tight and she wouldn’t really speak to the point where it’d be a little concerning

“Nancy? Are you ok?” “Yes.” “Are you sure?” “Yes.”

If she falls asleep be prepared to never move again because she goes deadweight pretty much immediately

Since she’s always busy she will more likely than not fall asleep

It takes some getting used to but she’s sweet 10/10

Jonathan

He definitely grew up cuddling with Joyce and Will a lot so I feel like he’d say yes and not think much of it

Very much the type to hold you versus having you hold him because with his family he was always the one doing the holding

He would let you hold him but you’d have to ask

Surprisingly takes up very little space because he sort of just curls up with his knees pressed to his chest to make sure you have enough room to get comfortable

Would sit there in silence but not in an awkward way it’d be a comfortable silence

It’s weird to describe but he has the same vibe as a cold pillow so you might get a little sleepy

If he’s either high or just very comfortable with you about 30 mins in he’d start asking you the most random of questions

“What do you think frogs think of puddles?” “Hm?” “Like, imagine finding a smaller version of your house” “Jonathan-” “Just saying it’d be a little weird”

Eventually he’d up silent again and his hold would get tighter than before as he slowly gets used to you, but he somehow isn’t aware he does this despite doing it every time

Overall you’d feel very secure and comfortable, plus you’d get to hear a wild thought, 10/10

Argyle

Of course he would say yes

Basically a giant teddy bear this man is so cuddly

Would probably just close his eyes and wrap his arms around you before whispering ‘this is nice’ in the most stereotypical way

Makes comments about your clothes if the fabric is uncomfortable or especially if it’s really comfortable

An awkward silence will not happen because if it does he’ll call it out and start a conversation

If he’s high he might try to stand up before apologizing

*he tries to stand up* “Dude I’m still here!” “Oh sorry man totally forgot you were there”

Will randomly start singing just because he likes singing and he does it whenever he’s comfortable around someone

If you guys started talking if something you said reminded him of a story he would immediately change the subject because he needs to get the thought out

“Yeah, I had a frog once and-” “FROGS! That reminds me-”

Would later on apologize for interrupting you

If he somehow ended up uncomfortable he would definitely tell you but he would make sure you didn’t feel bad about it because to him it’s not really a big deal since it’s an easy fix

Overall he’s a very comfortable and chill person, 10/10

I forgot how fun writing stuff was so I think I’m gonna start posting a lot more now. Anyways, I hope you guys like it :)

Stranger Things 5 predictions

I think it's time, before the spoilers hit.

Things I am sure about:

Byler endgame!!!

Elmike drama/breakup/friendship arc very integral to the plot

Will has powers, duh.

Jopper endgame

Happy ending

which necessarily means Jonathan surviving!

and OG party surviving + El

VH1 dying, duh

Things I am pretty sure about:

Mike gets vecna'd

Will is like Henry, not like the lab kids, an OG power kid (his parents are Joyce and Lonnie)

Max survives, cause happy ending, dammit

Steve and Robin and Erica survive. Happy ending.

Lumax endgame!!

Rockie endgame

Things I predict, because I can:

Mike meets Max in the deeper mind lair or something, gets her out, has to stay/doesn't make it out with her

Vesna outs Mike in front of Max, cause another character being there makes it more interesting

Willel teamwork to go get Mike, no simple piggybacking possible because deeper mind lair - different ... time? (wth do I know?)

Flickegate - It doesn't have to be a kiss but timefuckery explaining the flickering with connection to Byler. I SEE THE VISION

Jancy not endgame, I think. Definitely no other Nancy ship tho!

I COULD see Nancy dying. I know I'm the only one, but I'm gonna predict it, It could be devastating without being show ruiningly devastating. It would fit thematically (when Steve for example would just be random cruelty so someone dies)I just have this feeling. Still, she might live and it's a happy ending sweep. If someone important dies, I say her.

Things I wish for:

Argyle

For my beloved Mike/Max plot, I'll add Lucas thinking they are in love now (because Mileven breakup and Max obsessing about that Mike saved her and they need to get him out) and then being so relieved he is gay. Come on, there is always time for romantic hijinks and it would be such a fun thing for Lucas character. He would be all sad and saintly about it, so good.

In the last ep there is a moment that makes the painting prophetic. Mike leading Will and Lucas and Dustin into battle against the big bad.

I do want a moment of darkness from El, a fitting development from that time in S2 when she attacked Max - I do not mean attacking Max again, but maybe attacking Mike or ... something dark and the she has to actively choose the light again.

Kali comes back, proving that she wasn't for nothing.

10 appears! And somehow he is Eddie? 😂

STEVE/KALI the only Steve ship that truly slaps for some reason

Hopefully it will be the best "This only worked out because of everyone's actions" finale ever. Or at least second best since ST1.

Propaganda under the cut

Erina Pendleton

Erina is SO MUCH MORE than just a "Generic Love Interest" that was brought in the story to continue the bloodline after everything that happens (and it's made abundantly clear time and time and TIME AGAIN that she means everything to Jonathan, to a point that she was his exact reason to standing up against Dio for the first time) but without fail she's only ever allowed to be the supportive best friend. Or a wingman for Jonathan and whoever he's being shipped with. Or simply supposed to sit there and allow her husband to have a male lover (the amount of posts I've seen of ppl using the excuse that 'it was very common back in the Victorian Era for men to keep male lovers that their wives were aware of and quietly accepted so it isn't a stretch to say that Erina and Jonathan wouldn't be the same--especially given how progressive she's written". Or of course my favorite when they completely erase her from the narrative and pretends she doesn't exist Jonathan's got their son for some reason, but nope she ain't there!

a lot of times ppl who ship her CANON HUSBAND jonathan joestar with speedwagon will put her on the back burner of HER OWN CANON RELATIONSHIP in favor of propping up jonawagon, to the point where 90% of the archive for jonawagon/jonawagon(eri) is either erina giving jonathan and speedwagon consent to be happy together while she acts like a #LoveIsLove wingman OR they'll have the audacity to write fics where erina comforts speedwagon at HER HUSBAND'S FUNERAL

Our hero’s hot wife who was the first (and arguably) only person to give him the emotional support he needed. She’s the only person who never expects him to fulfill some mythical role, she just loves him for who he is. She’s been his best friend and the love of his life since he was 12 years old. When it comes to hero/sidekick ship, she’s forced to be a wing woman for her own husband, either nobly letting him go or peacefully agreeing to an open relationship but only for him!!! She gets nothing out of it, she’s just a good Victorian wife who is “ahead of her time”. Usually, just so she can provide a womb so that the hero/sidekick can be dads and she can conveniently be offscreen. OR she’s written as a lesbian in order to completely and “justifiably” take her out of the equation but there’s a.) no other woman in her vicinity to even ship her with b.) there’s vaguely some faceless, nameless woman we’re meant to assume she’s pursuing, not even a real OC for her.

Molly Hooper

She's in love with Sherlock, and in fandom she's just considered annoying. Listen, I don't ship them but jesus christ

Honestly I thought her relationship with Sherlock way too abusive (he treated her so badly wth) to turn into a healthy romantic one but the Johnlock shippers were super nasty to the actress -I think she even received dead threats ??? Over playing a fictional character ??? Just because people shipped two dudes ???- and the character deserved better personal development that didn't revolve around her unresolved crush for the main character

Set up as a romantic partner for Sherlock. Often gets shit on for being in the way of Johnlock.

hi marie, its me again <3 the anon with byler doubt haha ... you made such great points! and tysm for such a thorough response.

I am SO CURIOUS how do you think they'll get Mike and Will together? I think that's the aspect that has me doubting the most because it feels so so MESSY and they can very easily mess it all up if they aren't careful.

Explaining Mike's internalized homophobia etc might be something too difficult to unpack in just one season, on top of everything else going on as well with the world literally ending. I also don't know what the point was of having Mike say he loved Eleven if it wasn't true, what do you think they were trying to achieve with that?

Do we truly think she'd be okay with breaking up with Mike? And if the answer is yes, how will that affect Mike and El's dynamic going forward, you think? Will they really not only break up milkvan, but leave elmike underdeveloped in favor of Byler?

I look at the Steve/Nancy/Jonathan love triangle and that has been a mess for seasons now and still no resolution, so I don't know how they'll do it for Mike and Will. I fear they'll go for the "easy route" (aka milkvan endgame) to focus on the supernatural and other characters more. Because if Byler is endgame I feel like they'd need to devote a great chunk of the season to them in order to explain wth is going on with Mike specifically + giving him closure with El.

I suppose something else that gives me doubt is how Mike and Will have been sidelined in these last few seasons to give more screentime/protagonism to other characters and dynamics, so I don't know if I can fully believe the Duffers care THAT much about romantic!Byler if that makes sense.

Hopefully this all doesn't sound overly pessimistic or something, I am genuinely curious about your thoughts in some of these more like looking for reassurance tbh! Especially after reading your response to my first ask <3 TYSM once again!!

hello again!

To be honest, you've got a lot of questions that require separate (and equally detailed) responses, but...let me see if I can briefly explain each, and maybe link to other analyses I've done that might help make sense of why I say.

note: some of these are just my frankest opinions unfiltered, but I do have analytical reasons for all of them. Your questions are also asking things it's taken several rewatches and a year to sort through so...apologies if you just get the simplest version of the idea delineated here haha. also, a cut, because this got really long.

1: How do you think they'll get Mike and Will together? Transparently? I'm not really all that into specifics, because expecting specific things means I'm going to fall into the trap of thinking I'm the one writing it when I'm not and then say The Duffers "lied" or "messed up" because I expected something they never put in there. That said—in terms of plain setup, they will need to address the painting because that was a critical plot point from damn near minute one of S4, and now it's become fully integrated with not only Will's feelings for Mike, but Mike's own sense of El's feelings for him.

Beyond that...I think El will need to be the one to initiate the "complete" breakup, because she's the one who wanted space in the first place, the one who is repeatedly having her romantic partner paralleled to parental and tragic figures, the one refuses to be vulnerable & who built lies into their relationship...and the one whose general arc centers around reclaiming autonomy and choice from the men in her life. I also think Mike will be the one to initiate the romantic aspect, if its not a bit mutual.

2: Mike's internalized homophobia etc might be something too difficult to unpack in just one season - I disagree. We managed to sort through introducing Will's romantic feelings and sense of his queerness in a single season just fine...and Mike has had queer-coding show up throughout every season if you know what you're looking for.

The fact that this boy already has a one way sign into his closet, has repeatedly yelled about "boys only" every season AND shows clear signs of male attraction already has most people (even the supposed 'GA') suspicious of his sexuality, and combined with his devotion to will + the wider context, there are plenty of ways to introduce the idea of him liking boys explicitly that don't require any intense delineation...unless you expect them to say "he's gay" out loud, which they didn't do when Robin came out, and still haven't done for Will either...despite everyone knowing damn well they're gay.

3: I also don't know what the point was of having Mike say he loved Eleven if it wasn't true - I think that most of the breakdowns I've done of parentified!mike make clear that the love he has for her is somewhat genuine...though its being written as misplaced familial love, because he spent so much time believing he needed "a girl" to assuage his insecurities.

While I absolutely lean toward a gay!Mike reading myself, it's still clear even without a label that Mike's love mirrors Hopper's more than it resembles any of the love given by potential romantic partners to other women across the show—and Mike, given that he was being told by Will that El needed him to say he loved her for her to win, did what he thought was necessary to help her.

I do not think his love for her is a lie—I simply think it isn't romantic, and has now been so conflated with something negative in El's mind that it wouldn't matter if he mean't it romantically anyway. That said: narratively, Mike had to say he loved El because unless the fullness of what was expected (an I love you) was accomplished, it would hang over the story and any relationship Byler might have. El needed to hear it...so she could reject it, which she did.

4: Do we truly think she'd be okay with breaking up with Mike? yes. I think El will be absolutely 300000% just fine being broken up with Mike lmao. She has Hopper back now (who she was mourning the loss of, and therefore looking to fill with Mike emotionally), on top of having Max's "there's more to life than stupid boys" at the fore of her mind saving her.

Mike is also paralleled to parental and abusive figures in El's mind, on top of the fact that she has been keeping him at an emotional distance for the entirety of S4. Given that she and Lucas will probably also get closer in the search for Max...I'm quite sure she's not going to take it as hard as people imagine, especially given the fact that we already know she was happiest in S3 when they were broken up.

I also don't have any expectation of ElMike being super close friends (beyond party bonds + civility) either, which...I mean if you are I apologize but. I don't see that happening in canon, so them being developed deeply as friends before the show ends is not important to me as a plot point, and doesn't really have any canonical backing considering their ongoing lack of platonic connection outside of the necessary + lack of common interest. That's even a note thematically in the show...which means its makes sense for them not to be that close by the end of the narrative.

5: Steve/Nancy/Jonathan love triangle and that has been a mess for seasons now and still no resolution, so I don't know how they'll do it for Mike and Will. Truth be told, that love triangle has a resolution—Nancy has chosen Jonathan, and continues to, even though she flirted with Steve when she felt lonely. Nancy's arc has always centered around choosing something different than her parents and has from S1—her brief flirtation with Steve aside, her loyalty to Jonathan hasn't changed, though they are absolutely not a perfect couple.

If anything, the end of S4 set up Jonathan and Steve learning to be friends less so than anything implying Nancy might choose Steve instead—Jonathan is finally in a narrative position to choose something for himself now which frees him up to be honest with Nancy, and even outside of that, Nancy is far more likely to end up with single than she is with Steve—which is the exact opposite of how they've set up Mike to be with Will rather than El over the course of the season.

6: I fear they'll go for the "easy route" (aka milkvan endgame) to focus on the supernatural and other characters more. I don't agree. The supernatual plot has always been well-integrated with the romantic elements in every couple across the board, from Mike's "first love lost" energy happening when El disappeared in S1, Lumax bonding in S2 in a fight with demodogs, Jancy's bonding across S2-3 happening in the lab seeing the gate, while Will was un-possessed, and while they fought the thing monster in the hospital....and Jopper in Russia fighting a demogorgon in S4.

The Duffers have never slacked in setting up their romances in conjunction with the supernatual plots, and there's no reason to think they're gonna start with Byler, especially given Will's mirroring of Vecna/Henry, the way the day his disappeared is the day the UD is frozen, and how he's the one who can sense him...while now having Mike glued to his side.

7: if Byler is endgame I feel like they'd need to devote a great chunk of the season to them in order to explain wth is going on with Mike specifically + giving him closure with El. The 5th season is going to bring all of the characters together again, and they've already said Will is central to that. I've written before about the reason why they had to sideline Will in their plot to make a narrative point, but regardless...like I said before, if you know how to read subtext, Mike being queer won't come as all that much of a surprise.

Note: I've done several (1, 2, 3, 4, 5) analyses on Mike and his arc, which might help.

Beyond that...again, I honestly don't think The Duffers care much to make ElMike besties like fanon seems to think they should be (they haven't done it with any of the other romantic couples they've broken up) so...closure can include civility and acceptance for them the way it did S2 Steve with Jancy, imo. What Mike needs most is to gain the courage to accept himself and realize he doesn't need a girl to assuage his insecurities—and him being casual friends with El the same way he is casually supportive canonically with Max makes more sense than trying to skirt over all the mess of their relationship for the sake of an attached fandom ☠️

—that was a lot to cover, but hopefully that cleared up my position on a lot of your questions? Its really easy to get caught in other people's wants and headcanons for the show if you don't keep going back to it yourself, so—as lovingly as possible, I really do encourage you to just sit and watch it with the "byler knowledge" you have from users like me, your other fave analysts, and maybe some of the "old guard" like @kaypeace21, who was integral in my own development of opinions before I dug in for myself. If you're ever doubting, that's always your best bet.

That said: It's literally impossible to summarize a framework crossing nearly 37 hours of TV in a single ask (or even 20)...which is why I've got almost a year worth of posts about it (and have evolved my depth of understanding dramatically over time).
