Happy Holidays! I really love your writing, thanks for taking the time to write these prompts! I would like some Lady Mo please!
a continuation of 52 53 54 55 56
Wei Wuxian is irritated to see Song Lan, Xiao Xingchen, and A-Qing seated as far as from the main table as possible, but knows saying anything about it won't do anyone any good. Besides, all three of them look as exhausted as he feels, and it's a reminder that he's not the only one that's had a tumultuous day.
He's hoping he can leave the banquet early and crawl into bed and maybe cry a little bit before Lan Zhan joins him. He wants to blame pregnancy for his weepiness, but the truth of it is he wasn't exactly stoic and dry eyed in his first life.
"Lady Mo," on the senior disciples booms, far louder than necessary considering he's right there, "why aren't you drinking? You're not in Cloud Recesses anymore!"
The wine is right there and he can't even have any. What a tragedy.
He glances to the side, catching Jin Guangyao's eye instantly and neither of them so much as twitch but he's sure they understand each other perfectly. He never thought this level of familiarity was something he'd share with Jin Guangyao, but he can't say that he minds.
He briefly considers putting up a fuss at being referred to improperly, considering the very blatant insult in there, but the truth of it is whenever someone refers to him as Jin he wants to throw up a little bit.
"Jin Zixun," Jin Guangyao says smoothly, "Madame Lan is simply adhering to the rules of her sect."
Aw, putting him in his place and reminding him of Mo Xuanyu's status without using the name Jin, because he knows Wei Wuxian hates that. He'd pinch Jin Guangyao's cheek if he didn't think it'd get his fingers bitten off.
The senior disciple scoffs. "Even Sect Leader Lan drinks at banquets. Why shouldn't Madame Lan be able too? Toast to a fruitful year with me!"
Hold on a second, hasn't this happened before? He has a vague memory of drinking for Lan Zhan because someone was causing a fuss. Is this the same guy? It can't be the same guy.
Whatever. He can do the same trick Lan Xichen does and burn the alcohol off with his golden core. Which is sort of a waste, but the sting of it down his throat with none of the fun side effects is the closest he's going to get for a while.
Lan Zhan stands so abruptly that the table he's sharing with his brother scrapes against the floor.
Oh great. What's he doing now?
By the slight twitch of Jin Guangyao's left eyelid, Wei Wuxian knows he's thinking the same thing.

CPN Round Up : Sugar Rush 2023 Part One 🍭🍬
It’s that time of the year again where i attempt to recap all the sweetness we got from the past 6 months. I may not be able to add every single incident/speculation but i did include the ones that were most talked about, and added some cpn “archaeology” here and there too. most of the links contain multiple cpn, especially since i made a couple of mini round ups for certain time frames or events.
Tumblr media
this is also the best time to look back on all the fun we’ve had as a fandom and how the boys give us happiness. i hope this remains the same in the next half of the year and that we continue to support them both. 🫶🏼
past sugar rush posts for reference: 2021 ( one two ) & 2022 ( one two ) ; anything before that is mostly likely archived on my masterlist.
JANUARY 2023
• XZS Vlog Number 3 clues
• NYE CPN things ✨
• Paper Planes again
• A CPN Timeline of how LTS stage was made
• KXZ’s sus greeting and rainbow light show for ZZ’s anniversary with them
• 1/5/2022 tarot card reading of XZ & WYB that made the turtles lose it
• Rainbow Thrasher shirt 🌈
Tumblr media
• BLACK PAIRING. 🖤 and the fact that Yibo was doing the same pose as LWJ, keeping his hand behind. the actual performance of yibo also gave way to lots of fanarts of this pairing! they look so good together!
Tumblr media
• fake bits & pieces ( additional 45 fake rumors )
• their studios posting on the same day, 1/12 and the similarity of teasing that content will be released in parts
we also see more similarities in the drawings:
Tumblr media
The appearance of 🦴 necklace at all the studio rehearsals and even the final one makes me somft. He had to remove it for the stage cause he is meant to be bare. I don’t advertise people to treat this necklace as the indicator of their relationship, but i will be lying if i say i’m not happy seeing it. especially if it’s out there, that he can show it off and not have to hide it.
• XZ & WYB mentioned together three times in one day - 1/14/2023
• YBO’s comment on snow
• 1/17 random cpns = the same trousers again ; 330,000 tickets, bg color of studio posts and YBO’s continuing comments about the weather in the city they are in.
• Bouboo replies to a fan with “DAYTOY” on their username
• CPN @ Xiao Zhan’s lunar new year photos and douyin posts
• XZ’s lunar new year post looks like a movie ticket stub. What a coincidence cause Hidden Blade is also premiering that day ☺️ there was also a cinema that showed XZ’s GUCCI Ad before the show started. Lol. and at the Shanghai Roadshow for Hidden Blade, lots of BXG dolls on in the group photo were captured.
• Hidden Blade Guangzhou roadshow : mention kneepads and looking at dandan doll / yibo asking someone with a suo-er doll and him holding a bjd of himself.
• LRLG contribution 1/23/2023
• XZ’s colleague in ADLAD + Zack ( photographer ) talking about watching Hidden Blade
• 7th day of the Lunar New Year CPN + another xzs and ybo similarity
Tumblr media
I don’t usually go for kadians but yibo-official using 13 = yizhan makes me ☺️ ; also the similarity in how they caption posts again. on the same day. yes it’s not an obscure thing to include on a post that is made on the 7th day of the Lunar New Year. Wishing people good luck on a new beginning and all that. but it’s the countless similarities in how their studios do things. they have the same taste? their employees are dating? who knows.
• GG at Sunshine With Me shooting, looking so much like Yibo:
Tumblr media
FEBRUARY 2023
• Huang Ziteng posted about watching Hidden Blade and the schedule of the film is coincidentally 10:05
• Yibo shares a post about the snowboards given to him by Su Yiming + sweater paws shadow
• Top comment on Yibo’s 2/2 weibo post is a cpf and similarity with GG using a doge emoji when trying to be humble
• YBO posts about a 🍉 video being fake and it looks the same as xz clarification account. !!!!
• Fandom stories that have been on my mind recently. ( includes cpn on wyb kissing xz backstage of SDC and the 232323 kadian which is “new” for this month. ) old ones mentioned : wyb’s side accounts, a bxg story, changsha home and same day tests.
• 2/4/23 Fake Rumor House contribution
• People in the industry supporting (?) them : GQ photographer is a turtles, Yixuan replies to a fan with daytoy on their username, sungjoo using xz’s cover song as bgm for his douyin post back in 2019 + Yubin doing an unboxing of DVD and praising a spread with zz/wyb on it.
• YBO asks to show off glutinous rice balls and XZ responds ☺️
• Night Light fake rumor & same sun emoji
• Candy compilation from Sunshine By My Side filming wrap up
• Fake Story : riding a bike at night / AI art
• LOYIBOARD 🛹
• On 2/12, Yibo posted a douyin, a stock video where you can clearly see what jacket he is wearing. BXGs noticed that it said “milano” and thought it may be a clue that GG will go to Milan Fashion Week. more explanation here.
Tumblr media
• Both boys have been quiet and not “seen” for the better part of Feb, even 2/14 was especially quiet for them online. Yibo-official did post their candid compilation of Hidden Blade behind the scenes but it’s connected to promotions and not exactly for valentines day. It’s a common CPN speculation that when they are together, they get very quiet online and no paparazzi can take their photos. tho I have to say, 2/14 is not that important to them like 520 is. and then come 2/17, it’s interesting how you get to see them. let me rephrase that, they allowed us to see them. xz going to eat a meal with his assistant and wyb filming his drama. i’ve always been a believer that somehow, they can control when people will see them in public. they can be on ninja mode when they want to, especially xz.
the next day which happens to be 2/18/23 Ai Bo Ai Zhan Day, yibo shows up @ Shanghai airport at 6:30 in the morning. knowing that he finished filming past 10:00 PM, dressed in skinny jeans and looking so stylish. which is not his usual airport fashion these days. he will be in beijing for a couple of hours ( no one really knows for what ) and returned to SH the same day @ 5PM. turtles hope they saw each other atleast. Bobo really chooses the early flight so he can be with ZZ longer. ☺️☺️☺️
Tumblr media
• Lost General Jewelry
• Chengyi comic about ZZ cutting his hair before going off to see WYB
• Them looking so similar with these photos, GG’s is from his 2/22 Milan flight. The same hair. looking like twins. Also, one of ZZ’s photos had that BOarding design & photo. Yes I know it fits the whole theme of the pictures but still, turtles’ DNA was moved. Lol.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
• Using the same security personnel @ PEK?
• ZZ was spotted buying LEGO
• The similarity in their photo composition
• ZZ created an instagram account and his username has similarities to Yibo’s. Again. Same brain cell.

• the word “wyb” heard in xzs vlog
• same ip address of shanghai even if XZ was in Xi’An. Fans are saying, WYB might have logged on using a different phone number ( GG’s account ) and that’s how it changed. Because if this was a staff, most of them are in Xi’An or in their Beijing office.
MAY 2023
• May Day Candies - ( ZZ’s off white pants, rumor 1 : learning how to cook and zz giving wyb a rabbit charm rumor 2: couple jackets, in the same magazine, heart with a mole again on ybo

A cruel symphony of love and suffering
Thank you so much for requesting @Aelsher_- !  (from wattpad)
(This ended up being more angst, then how I originally planned. But there's a happy ending  and this was very fun to create hehe).
The Hanahaki is a fictional disease, in East Asian cultures where the victim coughs up flower petals, after they suffer a fate of unrequited love.
Petals drifted from her lips like confessions never spoken, delicate and heartrending. Hanahaki, they named it, a cruel symphony of love and suffering. The room held a sense of solemnity as the petals tumbled from her mouth, each one a testament to a love she had kept locked away.
In the sanctuary of her room, moonlight filtered through the curtains, casting a ghostly glow on the scattered petals that adorned the floor. The scent of plum blossoms hung heavy, mingling with the memories she held close to her heart.
From a distance, she had watched him, Lan Wangji. A figure of ethereal grace and unwavering discipline. His mere presence radiated tranquility, like a moonlit night on a calm lake. Yet beneath that stoic exterior, emotions stirred, evident in the blossoms that fell from her lips.
Lan Wangji, a name that evoked reverence and longing. His dedication to the ways of the Gusu Lan sect was unyielding, but his eyes held secret emotions hidden behind the façade. The petals, a manifestation of her feelings, seemed to bridge the gap between their unspoken connection.
The moon cast its silvery light upon the courtyard, revealing his silhouette as he moved gracefully among the shadows. Lan Wangji, a master of the guqin, moved with an elegance that matched the melodies he played. Their eyes met through the window, a shared moment of unspoken understanding in the moon's gentle embrace.
Y/n found herself yearning for a deeper connection. Her heart craved his affection, his companionship. Why did fate play such a cruel hand? She had meticulously followed the thousands of rules of the sect, and treated everyone with unwavering politeness. Yet, amidst all her efforts, the one thing that remained elusive was him.
As they locked eyes in the midst of reality, y/n moved to dispel the tension, drawing the curtains closed. A weight settled in her chest, her breath quickening in unmanageable spirals. Her heart raced, an unsettling nausea consuming her. And then, as if an unrelenting echo, she vomited those enchanting yet poisonous plum blossoms. Coughs followed in rapid succession, until blood stained her cloth, a grim testament to her condition.
Y/n sought out the healers, desperation evident in her eyes, but even their wisdom couldn't unearth a solution to her affliction. Hanahaki was a rarity of a rarity—an ancient ailment with a mere 0.1% chance of occurrence. Her determination, however, remained unshaken, her resolve stronger than ever. To face this silent adversary, she chose a path of avoidance, steering clear of Lan Wangji with every ounce of her being.
"Xiao Mei!" Wei Wuxian's cheer rang out as y/n crossed paths with him.
"Wei er-gongzi!" Y/n's greeting was accompanied by a warm smile as they drew closer to each other.
"Don't be so formal!" Wei Wuxian playfully scolded, his tone light. "Remember, we're friends."
"Of course," y/n replied, chuckling softly. She covered her mouth suddenly, a fit of rapid, harsh coughs overtaking her.
"Are you all right?" Wei Wuxian's concern was evident as he reached out to touch her face, checking for any signs of distress.
Y/n managed a reassuring smile, though her coughing had left her a bit breathless. "I'm fine," she replied, her voice still carrying a touch of hoarseness.
Wei Wuxian's hand lingered on her face, his brow furrowed with worry. He gently assessed her temperature, finding it oddly normal despite her recent coughing fit.
"I know what would make you feel better!" He exclaimed, gripping her arm gently.
"Where are you taking me?" she responded, amusement tugging on her lips.
"To a-zhans!" he declared, his voice feeling with cheer and excitement.
Her face lit in horror, and quickly stopped.
"Why are you so scared?" Wei Wuxian asked as his brows furrowed in confusion "I know he can be grumpy sometimes, but he's always nice to you, and you guys are best friends!"
"It's not that," Y/n hesitated, as her voice trailed off. But as her gaze met Law Wangji who was now facing them. She quickly turned and dashed into her room, pushing the door.
Y/n could discern the shadow of sadness that crossed Lan Wangji's expression, yet she convinced herself that maintaining this distance was the wiser path. It pained her deeply, this act of pushing him away, but she couldn't bring herself to bear the weight of potential rejection and humiliation. The thought of unrequited feelings gnawed at her heart, urging her to take this route ignoring him seemed the lesser of two agonizing options. The prospect of dealing with the consequences paled in comparison to the agony of baring her unreciprocated emotions to him.
While on the way to the library, y/n found herself abruptly pressed against the wall by Lan Wangji. His arms formed a barrier, preventing any avenue of escape. Fatigue and weariness marred his countenance, the signs of exhaustion evident. Disheveled and disarrayed, his appearance was a stark contrast to his usual impeccable self, his hair unkempt, and his ribbon askew.
"Wangji, what is the meaning of this?" y/n exclaimed, her voice tinged with both fear and the pressure exerted upon her.
"You," Lan Wangji's voice emerged, a soft exhalation. "Why have you ignored me?"
"I haven't," she responded, a hint of defiance in her tone.
"What have I done to deserve this treatment? Why have you turned so distant?" Lan Wangji's voice lowered to a whisper, his confusion palpable. "I witnessed you sharing smiles with Wei Ying, yet in my presence, you flee, your expression portraying fear."
"If your heart truly belongs to Wei Wuxian, there is no need for you to conceal it," Lan Wangji's voice held a quiet conviction. "Just don't leave me again."
A wave of guilt swept over y/n as the reality of Lan Wangji's emotions settled in. Her intentions hadn't been to evoke this reaction from him, but her stubbornness had blinded her to the impact of her actions.
"Is this truly your interpretation?" y/n's laughter held a bitter edge. "You believe that I harbor feelings for Wei Wuxian?"
"Despite our shared upbringing," she continued, a touch of disbelief colouring her words, "it seems as though you know nothing about me." A hint of hysteria crept into her laughter, a poignant reminder of the irony that had woven itself into this situation.
"Then tell me!" His voice cracked with a mixture of desperation and frustration as he clutched her shoulders, tears tracing their path down his cheeks. "Tell me the reason why my closest friend has been ignoring me for weeks."
"Oh, so you're eager for the truth now?" she taunted, her tone edged with bitterness. "You, who can hardly stand up to your own uncle, yet you have the audacity to demand the truth from me?"
Her words faltered as the petals tightened their grip, the sensation almost suffocating. She pushed him away, desperation flaring as she retreated to her room, the need to release the petals becoming urgent. Once behind the closed door, she emptied herself, the blossoms and blood mingling in a haunting display of her unspoken agony. This time, it was more intense, the hue of the blood darker, marking the depth of her struggle.
Her heart raced, each beat echoing in her ears as her vision blurred. The agony coursing through her was nearly unbearable.
As the weight of her suffering intensified, she found herself struggling to remain upright. The room seemed to spin around her, and the pain was as tangible as the air she gasped for. Every heartbeat felt like a thunderous drum, each thud resonating through her weakened body.
Meanwhile, Lan Wangji's determination didn't waver. With a fierce resolve, he pressed his ear to the door, straining to catch any sound from within. His own heartache mingled with worry, and a sense of helplessness gripped him. He knew something was deeply amiss, something he couldn't fully comprehend.
"Y/n!" His voice, raw and urgent, seeped through the door, carrying with it a desperate plea. "Please, let me in. I need to understand. Why are you ignoring me? Every night I wonder what I did wrong. I spent many sleepless nights thinking, where did everything go wrong. I just want my bestfriend back."
On the other side of the door, y/n fought to steady herself, the room around her threatening to dissolve into darkness. Her breathing grew ragged, and her resolve to protect him began to crumble under the weight of her own suffering. Yet, in this moment of vulnerability, her love for him remained unshaken, and it was that love that gave her the strength to respond.
With a trembling hand, she reached for the door, her fingers barely able to push it. Slowly, she pushed the door, as it revealed her disheveled figure, petals scattered at her feet. In that fleeting instant, her eyes met Lan Wangji's, and all the words that had remained unspoken seemed to hang in the air, waiting for a chance to bridge the chasm between them.
Y/n offered him a fragile smile, a glimmer of reassurance in her eyes. And then, without warning, her strength gave way, and she collapsed into his arms. Blood and petals spilled from her lips, a stark reminder of the hanahaki's cruel grip on her, and her labored breathing weighed heavily in the air.
"Y/n!" Lan Wangji's voice cracked, raw with panic and fear as he swiftly caught her, his arms encircling her limp form. "Y/n! Wake up," he implored, his voice a desperate plea, his heart pounding in his chest like a drum.
His arms cradled her, his fingers trembling as they brushed against her skin. Panic surged through him, a tidal wave of emotions threatening to consume his composure. Gently, he shifted her in his arms, his touch tender yet urgent, as if his very presence could summon her back to consciousness.
"Y/n," his voice was a whisper, laced with vulnerability, as he pressed his forehead against hers. "Please, open your eyes. You can't leave me like this." Every word trembled with the depth of his emotions, every syllable a plea for her to return to him.
He held her close, the petals that had once haunted her existence now scattered around them, a poignant reminder of the love he hadn't fully comprehended until this moment. In his arms, he held not just a friend, but a soul he had come to cherish a truth that had remained hidden in the silence between them.
As the seconds stretched into eternity, his heart raced, his every sense attuned to the hope of her awakening. "Y/n," he murmured once more, his voice a prayer in the quiet room, a plea for her to fight back against the darkness that threatened to steal her away.
Time seemed to stand still as Lan Wangji cradled y/n in his arms, his heart aching with a depth of emotion he had never experienced before. He could feel the weight of her frailty, the fragility of life that hung in the balance. Every rise and fall of her chest felt like a precious testament to her existence, and he held onto her as if his grip alone could keep her tethered to the realm of the living.
Desperation fueled his actions as he gently patted her cheek, his touch a mix of urgency and tenderness. "Y/n, please," he whispered, his voice cracking, "come back to me."
The room seemed to hold its breath, the air heavy with anticipation, as Lan Wangji's pleas hung in the air like a fragile melody. And then, after what felt like an eternity, a faint flutter of eyelids stirred. Y/n's eyelashes trembled, and her eyes slowly opened, her gaze meeting Lan Wangji's with a mixture of confusion and recognition.
"Lan Wangji?" Her voice was a whisper, barely audible, as if she were emerging from a dream.
Relief washed over him in a powerful surge. "Y/n," he breathed her name, his grip on her tightening almost instinctively. "Why didn't you tell me? Why didn't you share your feelings with me?"
A weak smile tugged at the corners of her lips, and she attempted to speak, though her voice was strained. "I... I'm sorry, Wangji."
The weight of her apology hung in the air, the unspoken truths between them finally laid bare. Lan Wangji's gaze softened as he brushed a strand of hair away from her face, his touch gentle. "You don't have to apologize, y/n. I wish you'd have confided in me sooner, but I understand why you kept this hidden."
Y/n's eyes shimmered with emotion as she looked up at him, her vulnerability mirrored in his own eyes. "I was afraid," she admitted, her voice trembling. "Afraid of losing our friendship, of facing rejection and humiliation."
Lan Wangji's thumb caressed her cheek, his touch a soothing balm against her doubts. "Y/n, you mean the world to me. Our friendship is invaluable, but if there's a chance for more, I want to take it. I want to explore these feelings with you."
Tears welled in her eyes as his words reached her heart, erasing the fears that had held her captive. "Wangji," she whispered, her voice filled with gratitude and affection.
He leaned in, his lips brushing against her forehead in a tender, chaste kiss. "Rest now, y/n. We have time to heal and to discover what lies ahead for us."
As the room bathed in the soft light of their shared understanding, they clung to each other, a promise of a future woven from the threads of their unspoken love. The journey ahead wouldn't be without challenges, but they faced it together, united by the bond that had weathered the storm of pain and petals.

Soulmate Bracket: Round 1 [Side A — Part V]
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Provided reasoning under cut:
Wei Wuxian & Lan Wangji
They are canonically called soulmates!! In the live action this is platonic due to censorship and in the book it is romantic but the term actually used is zhiji (知己) of which soulmate is the closest english translation but is more literally like. the mirror to your soul. your own self in another person. i am not good with translations only wei wuxian dies but lan wangji mourns him for thirteen years (despite wwx being hated and despised by the world) because he can never love another. when wwx is brought back he recognises him instantly despite being in someone else’s body. they literally would find each other in any time or place
Oh boy. Ok. They're not explicitly called "soulmates" in the show/book but Netflix does use that categorization in its description of "The Untamed". Nor are either of them technically reincarnated BUT Wei Wuxian does get resurrected in another man's body through some shady necromancy, which is pretty darn close. They've got a fascinating relationship journey (basically enemies/rivals to lovers) Mr. Follow-All-Rules-To-The-Letter Lan Wangji meets Mr. Break-All-The-Rules-In-The-Name-Of-Fun-And-Showing-Off Wei Wuxian at teenage exorcist summer camp, they go through some sh*t, Wei Wuxian dies, Lan Wangji spends over a decade trying to find any sign of his lost soulmate while raising his adopted kid, then the shady necromancy happens and Lan Wangji IMMEDIATELY clocks that this guy simultaneously solving exorcist issues using slightly questionable means and causing shenanigans is Wei Wuxian. He might be in a different body pretending to be another crazy man, but HE KNOWS it's his guy because he acts the same and he knows the secret love song Wangji wrote for Wuxian that he shared one time in a cave during one of their near-death bonding experiences. Then history starts kind of repeating itself, only this time they stick together and make sure EVERYONE knows that they've got each others' backs, and they are absolutely legendary. Also Wei Wuxian is INCREDIBLY dense and it takes him just about until the end of the story to realize they're both gay and in love. They're complex and fascinating and tied to each other by the red string of fate so tightly that they are incomplete without each other. That's destiny, baby. They're soulmates, always and forever. (Possibly literally as the proper practice of exorcism (called "cultivation" in this world) can lead to immortality, and you know Mr. Follow-All-Rules-To-The-Letter Lan Wangji has the potential, and he will drag his guy along with him so they are never separated again.)
Okay so I feel like it could be argued if they count but the Netflix description of the show calls them soulmates and WWX *did* get reincarnated and then almost immediately run into LWJ who had been mourning him for 16 years. LWJ composed a little musical theme for them that ties them together and WWX playing it on a super out of tune flute is what let LWJ fully recognize him. Their magic which comes from their souls is very compatible and neither of them have ever been normal about each other in their life even though WWX spent a long time being extremely dumb and repressed about his very gay feelings (they are romantic soulmates, just takes them a bit to get there). Big "you and me against the world" vibes once WWX becomes the number 1 wanted guy in the entire universe due to dabbling in dark magic even though WWX was like "lan zhan if someone has to kill me i want it to be you" (LWJ did *not* want it to be him and did his very best to keep WWX alive even though it meant betraying his clan and the world as a whole). They got fake married as teens back when LWJ didn't even like WWX. There are multiple moments where they parallel other soulmates/soulmate-coded characters (song lan and xiao xingchen, baoshen sanren and lan an). They're the only two characters who get to be happy at the immediate end of the story and that's because both of them being alive and together and getting to wander around fighting monsters and playing music and being grossly in love is all that they both need.
Utena Tenjou & Anthy Himemiya
[SPOILERS] at the end of the series, it is revealed that they weren’t living in the real world this entire time. Utena was sent somewhere else. Anthy goes to find her in the movie, and Utena has lost all of her memories of Anthy in that world. At the end of the movie, they end up escaping to the real world
Utena falls in love with Anthy on first sight and makes sure she becomes her prince without even remembering who she is. They're stuck in a timeloop and eventually find themselves together near the end escaping from the horrors theyre trapped in. (Spoilers kinda) Anthy is hinted to have came back to life after being burned st the stake for being seen as a witch so the reincarnation exists,,,(they're in love your honor vote for my silly sapphics)
Every version of RGU is the narrative repeating itself. Devouring itself again. The serpent eating its own tail. Utena fights for Anthy again and again. Anthy betrays Utena, or lies to Utena, or cannot save the both of them quick enough. Anthy escapes, or they both escape, or they both get trapped again, and the story repeats, and Utena is winning the hand of the rose bride, and Utena cannot escape the narrative. Each time the story is told again Utena cannot quite remember how she got here, but it gets more familiar each time. RGU is a time loop that the characters can hardly escape. In every version, Anthy and Utena find each other. Betray each other. Find each other, again.

Fic authors self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five fics that you've written, then pass on to at least five other writers. Let’s spread the self-love❤
Thanks for asking me, Tee!
This was a lot harder than I thought it would be and it took me a lot longer than I expected it to! These are not in any order after the first one, because I cannot rank them lol.
Tumblr media
Houseboat of Love
I’m weak for exes to lovers and second chance at love fics, so when the prompt came up in the 2022 BJYX Week, I knew I had to try my hand at writing one. And it’s turned out to me my favorite of my fics, or maybe my favorite of my favorites, and based on stats alone I think it’s most people’s favorite of mine. I wanted to start at the new beginning for them, have Xiao Zhan unwilling to see Yibo again because he was afraid of his own remaining feelings and for Yibo to have never stopped loving Xiao Zhan, but he hasn’t been allowed to for some years and how he’s had to get on with living and making space for this love that doesn’t have anywhere to go. I know this makes the fic sound really angsty, but starting at the new beginning I think keeps it in the background, a hum of angst that pushes the story but isn’t the point of the story. And I loved writing tattooed buff Yibo doing the bat crunches and Xiao Zhan being so obviously thirsty for his ex-husband, I let him get goofy with it and it was so much fun to write. The whole fic was a joy to write, honestly. And I’m glad Tash told me to bring back the bit of what happened between them, even though she then (lovingly) yelled at me for what happened between them, because I think it really did make the story more well-rounded. This one was partially inspired by the Sweet Home Alabama movie, where the main character finds out her ex never filed the divorce papers - but I couldn’t bear to have Xiao Zhan be with anyone else in my version so that part of the plot is all I adapted to this story. My sleepwalking/sexsomnia fic was technically my first exes to lovers fic (it came out over a year later) but I feel like this one was my first real “break them up and get them back together because they love each other still” fic. And I’m glad so many have loved it as I have.
Tumblr media
Love the Simulation I’m Dreaming In
I love this one because it is so much fun. It was so much fun to adapt this Golden Girls plot to Yizhan, I made several changes from the Love, Rose plot so it fit a) modern times and b) so Jackson & Yixing weren’t knowingly setting up Xiao Zhan to fall in love with their creation. In the GG episode, Rose finds her fake man in the phone book, and so I decided that a good update for that would be a hookup app. I loved making Xiao Zhan so damn dramatic (swanning around in a Shut Up robe and cooking stir fry for one despite the other two roommates being home, all because they weren’t there for his big announcement) and I made myself laugh with the ostrich feather conversation and so much of it. I’m just glad my humor comes across and other people find it funny too! Also Yibo is hot as fuck in this, if I do say so myself. And that’s always fun 😂
Tumblr media
You Can't Rush the River
This one was my first ever gift exchange fic, and it was for my dear friend Elisa. I had seen the first season of the Witcher and read a couple of chapters of the book, but I’m largely too squeamish with gore to have played/watched the video games. I knew I could write it though, so I did my research and rewatched a couple of episodes and watched my husband play through a bit of the third game. The prompt asked for rivals to lovers, and I love that it turned out as a one-sided Yibo thinks they’re rivals, hated rivals, while Xiao Zhan has been flirting the whole 50 years they’ve known each other. The emotions after what for one was a hate handjob and for the other was the culmination of *decades* of dancing around each other was very satisfying to write. This one is special to me because it was crafted for someone else, but I also learned a lot about what I can accomplish if I want to do it.
Tumblr media
Fireworks in the Stars
I’m extremely partial to this fic. Mostly because it’s a bit of an experiment with a world I’d like to write a full novel in (will that happen? I have no idea but it’s a goal!) So when the set of prompts from a server challenge fit the world I was playing with, I knew it was time to try to write something in it. I’m really happy with how that turned out, and it helped me figure out what worked in that world and what didn’t. I think it’s maybe my most sensuous story, with all the textures and the body paint. But I love the idea of breaking all the rules to find your love again, of meeting your special person in a situation where you're never supposed to see them again and how you can heal from that -- except the other person finds you before you can. Love it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You Belong in my Arms & ad astra:
This feels like cheating, and maybe it is but i suppose you’ve read this far and will be okay with it, haha! So I think everyone knows that I love tentacles, and tentacle stories, so it was finally time to write my own. And guess what, as of this writing, there are still no sexy tentacles, but these boys have found each other and have yet to learn that they are each other’s fantasy. I have outlines for one last chapter, though if it gets long in the writing it may become two. I’ll write it all before publishing; I love this fic a great deal (octopus!Yibo has my entire heart) but publishing it as a wip without it being completed or at least a couple of chapters ahead has hung over me in a way that I don’t like. Each fic teaches you something about yourself I think, and that’s what I learned from this one. For ad astra, it is a Star Trek AU, which like the Witcher, I knew enough to be dangerous but also because I’d written You Can’t Rush The River I knew I could write this one too. And it was a joy, I’m in love with it still and I think I’ve read it the most out of all of my published projects.
So there we have it! Many, many days later you have my top stories I’ve written, though I do love them all and this was a bit like having to choose a favorite child. Do you have a favorite of mine? I’d love to know! Tell me about it here or on the awful site 💖

2023 Cdrama roundup
What I watched in reverse chronological order, mostly.
Under the cut: 11 historical costume dramas, 5 fantasy dramas and a handful of others that I started but haven't finished yet.
Historical costume dramas
A Journey To Love (2023, IQIYI) Delicious beginning, strong middle, sort of fell apart for me toward the end as the focus shifted to siege warfare and succession politics. WTF was that epilogue, even. My Journey to You (2023, IQIYI) My winner for 2023. Visually transcendent, twisty storyline, amazing cast, glorious costuming; this was the whole package of everything I love. I was saving this one up as a special treat and it did not disappoint me. Story of Kunning Palace (2023, IQIYI) I liked it but it didn't hit for me emotionally how I thought it would. Still, very pretty, lots of enjoyable scheming and palace drama, and Bai Lu as Jiang Xuening was great. Mysterious Lotus Casebook (2023, IQIYI) This was the one I gave in and subscribed for. Alas, the Venn diagram of what I got out of this one and what the rest of tumblr got out of it barely overlaps. It was entertaining but did not consume me; possibly the subversions of the usual dudes in the jianghu tropes were lost of me because I am not a great enthusiast of dudes in the jianghu. Loved Li Lianhua's hairpins though. Jun Jiu Ling (2021, Viki) Must a drama be technically good? Is it not enough to have a great script and an excellent cast and let your leads get a bit goofy with the romance? Where is the petition for Jin Han to be given romantic lead roles in costume dramas forever? Twisted Fate of Love (2020, Viki) No, seriously, where is the petition. Stop hogging Jin Han's time with contemporary dramas! I don't care about contemporaries! Ironically I came to this one off the back of Lost You Forever, because it also has Tan Jianci in it, but again with ruining a great actor by casting him as a dutiful prince character of boredom. Let the dudes smoulder, please! So I came out of this wanting more Jin Han smouldering and hence went on to Jun Jiu Ling. Come to think of it, possibly another reason I found Kunning Palace underwhelming was because I'd recently watched Twisted Fate of Love, and I think Twisted Fate of Love did it better. Best non-2023 drama I watched this year. Would rewatch again and again. The Legend of Anle (2023, Viki) I think the problem is since I've seen Word of Honor, every other Gong Jun role is a disappointment. I really like him tender, lovestruck and mischievous. (And Xiao Zhan, I have the same complaint to make about The Longest Promise.) Instead his character in this drama has all the appeal of a bowl of cold porridge. The most fun I had was with Anle and the princess - the rest of the drama felt like a paint by numbers exercise executed with the least possible amount of love. I wrote drawerfic to purge my feelings of betrayal over how the story handled a certain spoiler. Also, Anle was hot with white hair and they should have let her keep it. New Life Begins (2022, Viki) Hello the feel-good feminist solidarity palace drama of my heart. My crops were watered, my skin cleared and my heart lifted. The Heart of Jade/Heart of Loyalty (2021, Viki) Loveable urchin is adopted into Ye Olde cdrama cops, solves crime with serious older partner (opposites attract!). Slightly better made than Jun Jiu Ling, engaging story and cast, not so much comedy but lots of heart. I’ve Fallen For You (2020, IQIYI) Incredibly stupid and very sweet. I loved it but alas it got gradually fractionally less stupid and a bit more dramatic towards the end. I know the older couple's romance was played for laughs but also good for them? Fall In Love (2021, Viki) I am tacking this one on to the historical costume dramas because technically it is one, it's just the historical period is the republican era. Anyway, blazing sexual tension between leads and finishing up with a little joining the glorious communist revolution, as a treat. Must remember to finish writing that PWP I have outlined for it at some point.
Fantasy dramas
The Ghost Bride (2020, Netflix) Deserved much more budget than it apparently got, but they did their best with what they had and I respect that. FL's BFF who got like a whole two minutes total of screen time if she was lucky is my new celebrity crush. Please cast her in more things. The Longest Promise (2023, Netflix) Visually stunning, great costumes, nonsense storyline only saved by a majority-awesome main cast, and a truly godawful main romance. As far as I can tell, Xiao Zhan is just there to supply a warm body where the ML should be and something acceptable to rest one's eyes on. Again, the fact that I first saw him in a role in which he was animated, cheeky and apparently having fun has ruined my ability to appreciate him in stoic, dutiful roles. I kept watching for the FL and to see if the 2ML would get less doomed. Back From the Brink (2023, Viki) Beautiful visuals, excellent female lead, great comedy value in between the blood feuding and violence. Honestly I am mostly watching cdramas of all kinds for the female leads, the beautiful visuals and the laughs, so even though I felt it dragged at times and the storyline gave me occasional conniptions, I enjoyed it. The Starry Love (2023, Viki) YEA BOY! This one was fun, would watch again. It's on the very short list of dramas with weddings that don't go horribly wrong part way through (pro-tip: never plan to hold a wedding in a cdrama, it's got to be 100% spontaneous or someone will get stabbed) Till the End of the Moon (2023, Viki) My initial impression of this one was it seemed to have a lot of suffering for the grimdark sake of it, but it had cute and funny moments too. There was a lot going on throughout, so much so that I could have watched another 20 episodes probably and not complained it was too long. Would watch again, especially all the parts with Pian Ran.
Dramas I started but haven't finished yet
Flavour, It's Yours/Instead of Tipsy Why Not Get Drunk (2019, Viki) Picked up because Gong Jun was fun in Word of Honor, stayed for the wine, weirdly. Put it down because I am not feeling the romance. Our heroine needs a million dollars and all her life problems solved, but I don't believe she needs a boyfriend. Lost You Forever S1 (2023, Viki) Stopped at ep 31 not because I didn't like it but because I like it so much and there will be a season 2 and I want to be able to breeze through whatever emotional hell awaits at the end of season 1 straight into season 2, box of tissues in hand. Would watch again, repeatedly. Odds on for my favourite drama of 2024. Love is Sweet (2020, IQIYI) I had the subscription so I thought I would check it out. Contemporary settings are not my friend, but I stuck with it, and the makeout session in the hallway was super hot, but sadly the main romance went downhill from there and hence I bailed at ep 25. Imperial Doctress (2016, some random Youtube channel) This is not A Journey to Love and I can't believe it took me 7 episodes to stop and question it properly. I might come back and finish watching it though. Or not. In my disappointment I resubscribed to watch the actual A Journey to Love. Mr Bad (2022, Viki/IQIYI) Stopped watching this one midway in order to watch more costume dramas (I have priorities). The Blood of Youth (2022, Viki) I will probably come back to it eventually but I stopped watching this to watch more dramas with female leads (again with my priorities) Love is an Accident (2023, IQYI) Subscription ran out before I got to the end, other priorities took over when I renewed the subscription, but I was enjoying it and will be picking it back up now.

YiZhan Fandom Interview with Renren !!
Preface:
In my attempt to sort out all the massive information that is generated almost daily in the BJYX fandom, I came up with an idea to interview prominent 🐢 for pointers, recommendations and advice as kind of a starter compilation kit for newbies.
Also, my intent is to provide some translations of the interviews (if you’re also interested in translating, let me know thru’ my twt acc below) for international fans and contribute my grain of salt to thin the language barriers and get to know more fans or simply, know your fave person in fandom.
With that being said, this is my first interview, so any constructive FB is welcome!
-::-::-::-
Thanks so very much for accepting my first ever interview, Renren 🙏
So, the first question is kind of a mandatory introduction.
Q. Please, tell us a bit about yourself. How you like to be called or how do you go by in this fandom and how long you’ve been in the swamp?
I’m Renren, but most folks call me Ren. I’m a fic writer and a szd shipper (which for new folks means I believe they’re actually in a relationship, this is also called being a tinhat lol).
I watched The Untamed in January 2021, and then watched the official BTS, and saw a shipper in the comments and was like “huh, people ship real people?” I was no stranger to shipping fictional characters (I’ve written Reylo before), but RPS was brand new to me. But the more I watched of the BTS and then the unofficial BTS, I was like, oh yeah, there’s something here. The cave BTS sealed it for me.
So, I’ve been in the pit since January/February 2021. I lurked for a long time, then joined fandom more actively in the fall of 2021, and started writing and released my first Yizhan fic in Jan 2022.
This is your first RPS? Wow, how cool is that? To debut with such a power couple! ☺️
Q. When you were a lurker, which SNS did you mostly use?
Which leads to the next question…
Q. Where are you most active/ favorite place to dabble in fandom-wise?
I lurked on tumblr mostly, and read Twitter without an account. I didn’t make one until August, and I don’t think I used it to post until September/October 2021.
I’m active most on Twitter, with Tumblr set up as my backup to Twitter.(@renren85105)
I’m also on AO3 as TheDevilandMrsRen.
Tumblr
By the way, you have very distinct profile pic (wyb with an octopus plushie on his head!). Did you always use it?? Is there a reason why you chose that? 🤭
I think I had a different one when I signed up, but I can’t remember it - I chose it because I like tentacles lol
As in a fic trope/kink? or something else? 😆
Both lol, I’ve always loved octopuses, I think they’re darling, but I also enjoy tentacles as a trope.
We’ll come to that later~~! There’s a question regarding that afterwards.
Q. What was your first drive/motivation to start writing about them? Would you share a link to your first fic?
It was Xiao Zhan’s lightsaber video!!! I had this idea for a Star Wars AU with the two of them, and it took me over body and soul and I finally had to write it. The first story I posted though was the first Golden Girls AU,
then the Star Wars AU came out a month later.
By the way, you guys have to go read Renren’s Golden Girls AU cos I can assure you, you are going to enjoy it SO much, if you haven’t already!!
So on to the next one!
Q. How many fics have you written so far? Which one is the one that you’re most fond of and why?
I’ve written 15 Yizhan fics so far, and drawn 10 mushroom fanarts! I’m not sure I can pick a favorite, but it’s between “Fireworks in the Stars” because it’s an original concept that I’ve been playing with for years and want to eventually write a full original novel with it, and “Houseboat of Love”, because I had so much fun with the exes-to-lovers concept. It was a bit angsty but I also wanted it to be a fun time with Xiao Zhan thirsting hard for his not-actually-ex-husband.
But I love everything I’ve published, if I don’t love it, I don’t release it.
I had totally missed that Renren’s mushroom posts are fanarts! I had to rush to see them and they are all SOSOSO Adorable, with capital A! The puns are sublime. I loved them all to bits and she has confirmed there’s more to come in the future!! Be on the look out, you guys!! 🥹🥹
Q. What’s your favorite trope to write/draw or a new one that want to try this year?
Oh, that’s hard! Because it’s different from my favorite tropes to read.
I really like to write getting together stories, especially if there is only one bed/they’re stuck together in some way.
But this is the year I’ll finally write tentacles, which is actually so much harder than I thought because a) I want to do it justice since I love it so much and b) there is SO MUCH choreography involved with all the extra limbs. You Belong in My Arms is my tentacle WIP, with chapter one out. Chapter one just has a cute octopus and tentacle kink, but no actual use of tentacles in a sexy way.
I will just restrain myself to say that Renren’s octopus is so cute like an underwater jianguo. I am hopelessly hooked to her fic that am anxiously looking forward to new chapters! But I digress…
Q. Are you bjyx, zsww or lsfy? Is this dynamic important to you when writing? (Or reading?)
So I am a bjyx-leaning lsfy. I enjoy reading everything, but I prefer writing bjyx or Yibo top lsfy.
That sounds like it’s the same thing, but the power dynamics are different between them (bjyx Yibo is IN CHARGE while it’s much more neutral in lsfy).
You mean like, Yibo makes the move? Or that he decides how he wants XZ?
Yeah, in BJYX makes most of the decisions, he’s very dominant in the bedroom and outside of it.
I like strong Yibo, indeed 😏
Q. What’s your most fave 🍬? Have you written about it? Where do you get most of your 🍬 sources?
My most favorite candy is the tattoo cpn! I have used it, most literally in an unreleased work, but I love to give both of them tattoos in my works anytime I can.
My candy sources are from Twitter (overthinkingthis, ecah, shirasagis, ventus for older candies) and tumblr (accio-victuuri), and I avoid folks sharing stalker footage or making wild claims like they know someone in the business or disparage their co-stars, because it’s harmful to the boys & just flat out rude.
I think for us newbies, we need to be careful and prudent on that and not fall for everything we see or outright edited (fake) info, cos it’s becoming harder to distinguish 😵‍ (out of my own experience)
So, the next question is selective, you can choose either or both…
A) Did you read THE fic? The controversial 22/7 one? How did you like it? How would you end it?
AND/OR
B) Do you wanna talk about wyb’s latest NYG’s LtS performance?
A) I didn’t. I didn’t even go looking for it, it has so many emotions and events attached to it, I think it’s best to just let it rest. No judgment for folks who decide to read it, though! Just my opinion.
B) Yes I do!! it was gorgeous and emotional, all about the yearning and longing you feel when you’re away from your partner and the bright warmth you feel when you’re back with them. It felt real, like he was pulling it from the depths of his soul.
It’s raw and vulnerable, and he did such a good job, I’m so proud of him! (And no, I don’t think it’s a breakup song or born from anything other than long distance relationships being hard.)
That performance was so heartfelt indeed 🥲
Q. Who is a content creator (writer, artist, v/blogger… etc) you would rec to a newbie? (Name as many as you wish) And lastly, a piece of advice for newbie 🐢!
Oh gosh, so many people! It’s hard to not just list all of my friends lol.
OldObsess/Overthinkingthis is a fantastic writer and candy librarian, her fics have great footnotes with all the different things she references in her fics.
Elisamiao is another amazing writer and she is so supportive of new writers in the fandom. I call her the fandom’s librarian because she is fantastic at fic recommendations, and can find what you’re looking for so fast!
Jalpari runs great events, and is a prolific writer, her Yizhan Through the Years is the first/second most kudos’d fic in the fandom. She is also very supportive of new authors/artists in the fandom!
BJYXObsessed is hilarious, her fics are so good and her meme threads are laugh out loud funny, I see them all over the place as reaction memes.
Bjyxnoa is a great update account on Twitter, and for deep cpn and candy discussions I like to go to Accio-victuuri on tumblr.
A piece of advice I have for new turtles is to not worry too much about proof of their relationship. They don’t have to prove anything to us, and each person has to decide for themselves how to interpret the things they do tell us. Everyone has their own “realness” comfort level, and that’s okay! It’s okay to be 100% szd and it’s okay to not be!
Lastly, their privacy is extremely important. Stalker footage is wrong, even if it “proves” what you want to see.
And don’t break the fourth wall with them, for example, if Yibo makes another Instagram post, don’t flood the comments with shipper comments, their social accounts are for work, and so we should keep our comments to the individual and the work they’re doing.
END
-::-::-::-
I can’t thank Renren enough for accepting my offer and come on board with this wee project of mine, and especially her wise words of advice 🙏🙏🙏
It’s a great reminder to all of us 🐢 that we ought to keep in mind and keep our recklessness in check. If we really love and support them, we must first respect their individual works.
And that’s it for today, folks! Thanks for reading! Hope you enjoyed it.
You can find me on twt @fleur_1005 for suggestions and/or comments!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas
Day 2 of WangXian Christmas Stories!
It was a week or two before December 1st that Wei Ying started noticing things in their city changing. The municipality had already started putting up Christmas lights, workers hanging up snowflakes, stars and stylized angels all along major streets, occasionally blocking traffic.
Then, stores all around changed their autumnal displays with Christmas-themed decorations and merchandise, Santas and Christmas trees quickly replacing Halloween pumpkins and scary monsters. Commercials on TV and online announced new collections and gift ideas, and radio stations began playing Christmas music and talking about holiday cheer.
Even A-Yuan’s school announced an event to mark the holidays - a choir of children would sing a couple carols and holiday songs, and then they would act in a shorter, age-adjusted variant of “A Christmas Carol”. A-Yuan was even assigned to play the part of Tiny Tim - his teacher, Mr. Xiao Xingchen, explained A-Yuan looked “small and fragile enough” for the role and, knowing how sickly he used to be, Wei Ying couldn’t argue with that.
Funnily enough, the role of Ebeneezer Scrooge was assigned to Jin Ling, and Wei Ying had too much fun teasing both Jin Zixuan and Jiang Cheng about how fitting and how hilarious that was. Almost as hilarious as Lan Jingyi having been assigned the role of Bob Cratchit - as if Jingyi would allow himself to be overworked like that and not cuss anyone out, 7 years old and all. Wei Ying was quite sure Jingyi would let out an f-bomb during the show at least once.
Then, a Secret Santa event was announced at Wei Ying’s workplace. The company had never done that before, but management had explained it would help people bond and make the work environment more pleasant. So, after picking names written on scraps of paper someone threw in a Christmas hat, Wei Ying was stuck having to gift something to Lan Wangji, the company’s vice-president and Wei Ying’s favorite person to get reactions out of.
It was a bit optimistic to say the two were friends, but hell if Wei Ying was anything but an optimist. He liked teasing Lan Zhan and breaking his steely facade that everyone seemed so intimidated by - after all, Lan Zhan was just another person behind all that pompous job title and he was quite funny if you spent enough time around him. And Wei Ying had been assigned a few projects with him so he got the chance to really get to know this seemingly unfeeling piece of jade come to life.
However, that didn’t mean Wei Ying had much idea about what to get the man. For one, he was filthy rich, so he must have had virtually everything one would need. He couldn’t just give the man a cup or something cliche like that either. Second, Wei Ying didn’t have that much information on him - sure, he liked rabbits and knew how to play the guqin... and that was as far as Wei Ying’s knowledge stretched. Lan Zhan was not very open with talking about himself. Also, more importantly, Wei Ying couldn’t afford something too extravagant - he had a child in his care after all, and that asshole landlord had decided to raise rent for some reason, which tightened Wei Ying’s budget considerably.
Still, Wei Ying didn’t lose determination one bit. He would impress Lan Zhan with his gift no matter what.
(And he would pointedly refuse to acknowledge the reason he wanted to impress Lan Zhan in the first place too).
---
The Christmas party went by smoothly, organized by MianMian and her very skilled colleagues, so much so that Wei Ying had almost forgotten how nervous he had been walking into the refurbished meeting room, branding Lan Zhan’s gift in a light blue, carefully wrapped little box. He had wracked his brain about what to get him and settled into some really cute, bunny-shaped, silver-plated cufflinks with transparent crystals for eyes and a matching tie pin.
Wei Ying had seen Lan Zhan brandish such things before and the moment he saw them on that storefront display, they almost screamed Lan Zhan’s name. They just happened to be on sale, too!
After snacks, drinks and casual conversation, the long-awaited moment came and MianMian announced the time to exchange gifts. There was an uproar of voices and murmurs of gratefulness and laughter - and Wei Ying took a big gulp of wine before walking up to Lan Zhan with a smile.
“So, I’m your Secret Santa, Lan Zhan! I really hope you’ll like my gift, I promise it’s nothing indecent this time! Merry Christmas!”
Lan Zhan looked even more surprised than Wei Ying had expected him to as he himself handed Wei Ying a box. They stared in each other’s eyes for a good three seconds before Wei Ying burst into laughter and Lan Zhan smiled, genuine and happy.
“What a coincidence.” he said, the look in his eyes so soft it made Wei Ying blush. “Must be fate.”
He carefully unwrapped the gift from Wei Ying and felt his heart squeeze at the beautiful items carefully laid out in a velvet box. Wei Ying’s expectant expression almost made him chuckle. “They are beautiful, thank you. I will be wearing these at the next important event.”
Wei Ying grinned widely and unexpectedly threw himself in Lan Zhan’s arms for a quick hug. “You don’t know how nervous I was you wouldn’t like them!”
Lan Zhan looked like he wanted to say something else, but settled on letting Wei Ying disentangle from their embrace and reminding him to open his own gift.
“Lan Zhan... this is...”
“A while ago, you said your flute was damaged when you moved out of your old apartment, so I figured you could use a new one. I was told it was named Chenqing by its creator. The history of the flute is quite... mysterious, but it is masterfully carved and I believe you will make good use of it.”
Wei Ying trailed his fingers along the fine instrument, shining black in its elegant encasing, a red tassel hanging on one end, and a little envelope on the other.
“Open it.” Lan Zhan urged, as Wei Ying curiously glanced at the paper. He found an invitation for two at the Christmas concert to be held at the city’s opera house.
With a sigh, Lan Zhan proceeded to explain. “I would like to invite you to accompany me to the concert...” the tops of his cheeks and ears burned, “...as my date.”
Wei Ying sighed and clicked his tongue. “Lan Zhan... now I feel bad, you know?”
“I- please, there is no obligation for you to-”
Wei Ying laughed instead and latched his arms around Lan Zhan’s neck affectionately, the man’s disappointed expression changing into surprise. “You don’t actually think I’m refusing you, right? It’s just that your gifts are so much better than mine that I feel a little lame!”
Lan Zhan sighed a bit too deeply. “Wei Ying... I thought...”
“None of that! I’d love to go on a date with you! And not just one, hopefully, because I really like you and I hope we can do more than date!”
Lan Zhan’s self control snapped then and there and he kissed Wei Ying before he knew what he was doing. Yeah, they would definitely do more than just date.
(In fact, they marry the following year).

I JUST SAW UR POSTS ABT CQL AND OH MY GOD YEAH ITS. THE WORST my sibling and I just finished it a couple days ago but after they'd finished reading the novel we were mostly making fun of the show as we watched LOL-- one thing I will say is that I like most of their casting choices bcus yibo gets all the little wangji microexpressions dead-on
It's like !! Idk I know it's a lot of people's first introductions to the series, and I do think it's good on its own, but I hate when people analyze it like an improved extension on mdzs. It's not! More than anything it's like. Mdzs-inspired content honestly. Idk maybe discourse has made me too bitter, but I've seen far too many takes that cql makes mdzs better in some way by adding "ace representation" (I'm referring NOT to ace people who see themselves in cql wx! You guys are great and I'm happy for you!! but to the people who say stuff like so glad they got rid of the icky gay sex and PDA, if your ideal ace representation is quite literally government-censored gay content, please reevaluate) or feminism or something. It's like, idk, if you see it that way then good for you, but I can't help but be a bit cynical that a monopolistic company rife with government censorship would have more authentic intentions than a vulnerable young fem indie author who probably barely makes profit off of her original work. It's the scum villain main in me I guess.
Though the casting is so good!! I'm always surprised when I remember that yibo wasn't an established actor before, he gets all of lwj's little details so perfect. Xiao Zhan too is also incredible. You can tell the cast had a lot of love for the characters, and I'll never fault them for that!

Yizhan fic-rec
oh yes, we’re doing this again! here’s a rec of some more recent yizhan fic. there’s been some exchanges, some kink memes, and just some regular good stuff, so the time felt right.
as long as you’re by my side E, 4k, OverthinkingThis, spoonful_of_sugar
"Where are you taking me, gege?" Yibo asks, as if he doesn't already know. The fingers of his right hand find the collar fastened around his neck and absently caress the tags hanging off a loop at the front. They tinkle softly over the low hum of the car’s engine.
Xiao Zhan smiles, buckling his seatbelt. "Somewhere special, darling."
Or: Mr. Xiao takes his spoiled puppy out for an evening of food and pampering.
soft, sweet, kinky
*Against All Expectations 6k, M, jiejieaini
It all came to a head in the middle of filming. There was only so much that suppressants could do to control the baser instincts of the alphas working on any project, especially in such close contact as Wang Yibo and Xiao Zhan were. It felt like they had hardly been apart in months.
Xiao Zhan was restless. Frustrated. The takes weren’t going well and he was getting more wound up with each passing moment. This frustration was only accentuated when Wang Yibo teased him for, yet again, screwing up one of his impossibly long and difficult lines. He had finished the take, stalked off and said nothing on the bus back to the hotel. His skin felt tight and itchy and he put it down to the heat of the day and his sweat-soaked costume.
He got back to his room and slammed the door shut, stalking into the shower to scrub off the makeup and wig glue and hoping to take the edge off by jacking off. The frustration only seemed to grow. It wasn’t enough. Nothing felt like enough.
———
Alpha Xiao Zhan goes into his rut. Alpha Wang Yibo is there for him.
we have some hot gaybo going here.
the blue yearning, the summer light 10k, E, planetb612
In the summer of 2026, Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo swap bodies for the second time. This would not have been a problem — except for the fact that they have not been in contact since 2020.
bodyswap-au! these are fun and not many to be found. got that good future take as well, the kinda getting back together thing.
draw me like one of your good boys 12k, E, sandorara
“Wow Gege, you’re so good. You should draw me.”
Just the words irritate Xiao Zhan before he even looks up. When he does, the annoyance brewing within him only grows. Right behind his shoulder is a young man who looks like a collection of some of the worst parts of humanity: obviously filthy rich, covered from head to toe in objectively ugly, ‘hip’ streetwear and possessing zero manners. He’s pushed much too far into Xiao Zhan’s personal space, and somehow manages to look entirely nonchalant about it all despite the supposed praise and over-familiarity. Clearly nothing but hollow words. Xiao Zhan grits his teeth.
What he wouldn’t give for some peace and quiet.
very nice! sugar didi with dom xz. a truly great combo.

Your streamer is toxic and slams his own fanbase on stream. My streamer talks philosophy and gives life advice while streaming horror games. We are not the same.
Or: When horror game streamer Xiao Zhan reconnects with his oldest fan, it kicks off a relationship that goes beyond the screen. But what does controversial idol Wang Yibo have to do with it all?
famous/non famous. xz is a game streamer, wyb is... well, famous. but also anonymous.
all I ever needed, you’re the one 17k, M, nikefemme
AU. Xiao Zhan, Emperor of the Nine Kingdoms, is determined to find and marry his zhiji, but it’s proving to be a bit of a challenge, even with magic involved.
Wang Yibo has an important quest involving said Emperor, but Lu Ban locks and the odd customs of this strange land are a bit of a distraction.
Things do not go precisely as planned for either of them.
Featuring: Da-laoshi offering unhelpful advice, bigbro!Han Geng, friends-with-too-much-interest-in-your-love-life Yunlong and Xuan Lu, and Ayunga as a helpful bearer of legends. Special appearance by Wang Han to bring good sense to the party.
CW: a/b/o features but is not the main point. Same with mpreg.
cute fantasy au of a sort. here be dragons.
This Must be the Place 18k, E, airinshaw
Yibo is not a fan of the idea of soulmates, doesn’t really think about his soulmark, and definitely has no time for Xiao Zhan, the ridiculously famous idol who, for some reason, keeps coming to stay at the hotel Yibo bartends at and disrupting everything with his fans and followers.
But all of his cynical opinions are tested when someone leaks a photo of Xiao Zhan’s soulmark. Because it is a perfect match for Yibo’s.
i’m weak for a good soulmark au and this was famous/non-famous as well. read it right now.
*Plain talk 22k, E, brooklinegirl
"It's this thing," Xiao Zhan says. "With Yibo. It's—I can't explain it, not really, but I can't stop telling the truth when I talk to him." It sounds absolutely insane as he says it.
"Hm," Xuan Lu says, not sounding as surprised as he'd expected. "And you think that's a...curse?" Her tone is carefully neutral.
Or, while filming The Untamed, Xiao Zhan finds he can only tell the truth. It causes some problems.
when this author does a comeback, you gotta rec it. trust in brooklinegirl, her sweaty xz and *that* summer.
How to Rid Your Gym of Fuckboys 25k, E, lyricalfog
Wang Yibo never intended to fake a relationship with his nemesis just so his mother would stop wasting her time trying to find suitable partners for him. Really. It just kind of worked out that way.
this was a treat!!! no but so many great tropes and really hot as well
*wild flower, wild grass E, 30k, islet
Xiao Zhan turns forty, ends his acting career, buys a house by the sea, and falls in love. Wang Yibo is twenty-one, and, uh - just happens to be there. These facts are not unrelated.
now this was a treat!!! i do love older xz, the fic one that has landed and decided to get out. this was very good.
lying in the dark (no sunshine) 34k, M, OverthinkingThis
Wang Yibo has had Xiao Zhan erased from his memory. Please never mention their relationship to him again.
Xiao Zhan furrows his brow, flipping the paper over and over in confusion, but other than the initials “LWJ” at the top of the page and a line of contact information, there’s nothing more to the letter.
It's been hard enough for Xiao Zhan to move on since the night Wang Yibo walked out, but now someone is fucking with him by sending a prank letter. Erasing someone from one's memory is not a thing that can be done — is it?
If it is, then Xiao Zhan doesn't want to be the only one bearing the burden of remembering what they've lost.
-----
or: It's not easy to forget Wang Yibo.
UPDATED WITH NEW EPILOGUE
uhm, i actually haven’t read this yet but was reminded that i’m gonna!
*Kept You Like An Oath 36k, M, stickmarionette
After all his wondering and all the unanswered messages, to see Xiao Zhan standing in front of him all the way out here seems like a miracle.
Xiao Zhan leans back against the railing and tips his head back into the breeze. The cap casts his face in shadow but Yibo can still hear and picture his megawatt smile.
"Here. I've been here. Waiting for you," Xiao Zhan says. Like that's a normal thing to say. "Aren't you happy to see me?"
Yibo closed the book on that wild summer long ago. He doesn't expect to be faced with it again almost ten years later.
another one of these!!! they’ve moved on (xz has left c-ent) but then! ugh so good. this writer does good stuff as well, check their pseud
ON GOING SERIES: A World Apart, sparkly
The one where Wang Yibo joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Xiao Zhan does Shakespeare and they end up married and disgustingly in love (again).
i almost did not read this because of the m*rvel factor. but then i did, and i do not regret it! a future fic type of thing where they are successful and also find each other again. power couple yizhan.
*WIP: let’s not try to figure everything out at once E, corianderbunnies 🔒
Xiao Zhan takes up the patient's admission forms and turns away, washing and sanitising his hands at the small sink in the corner.
Patient Wang Yibo, he reads. His eyes are blurry with tiredness and he wants to rub them, only then he’d have to rewash his hands. Twenty-four. Presents with a sprained ankle. Urgent investigation and treatment.
Twenty-four? Christ, really? He looks like a kid.
A sprained fucking ankle? He could've strapped it up himself. The Director must be smoking something.
xz is a doctor wyb is WANG YIBO. this is such an ongoing treat, it’s cute it’s hot it’s heart wrenching when they miss each other. i do really recommend following along. (it’s already over 100k)

Random song recs: Mandarin edition
Did one for Thai songs a while back here and thought this might be fun. Idk.
S.H.E.:《痛快》 (tongkuai/Satisfaction)
First c-pop song I ever heard, first I learned to sing (parts of) for karaoke, still a banger.
youtube
信乐团: 《死了都要爱》 (Shin Band: si le dou yao ai/Even dead I want love)
It's dramatic, it's epic, it's rock, what else do I want?
youtube
周笔畅: 《走!》 (Bibi Zhou: zou!/Run!)
this wasn't my first Bibi Zhou song – that honour goes to 别爱我像爱个朋友 (bie ai wo xiang ai ge pengyou/don't love me as a friend) or the one that I feel is most popular (that'd be something like 用尽我的一切走向你 yongjin wo de yiqie zou xiang ni/running towards you with all I have) - but it's a really fun, high energy one that I love a lot.
youtube
梁博:《男孩》 (Liang Bo: nanhai/Boy)
This one is 100% due to a previous fandom, and I still love it. If it's gotta be a love song, self-depreciating bittersweet love songs are my poison of choice, apparently.
youtube
毛不易:《消愁》 (Mao Buyi: xiaochou/Drowning Sorrows)
Mao Buyi is another one of those … god, anything he touches is golden, but this one is special to me. Went over the lyrics with one of my teachers in class and goodness, goodness. All the feelings.
youtube
梁静茹:《分手快乐》 (Fish Leong: fenshou kuaile/Congrats on the Breakup)
oldie but goldie. nostalgic but hopeful. the one we broke out when, at a barbecue where a friend had been uncommonly quiet, she finally told us that she'd broken up with her partner. Got a smile out of her by the end.
youtube
李荣浩:《年少有为》 (Li Ronghao: nianshao youwei/If I Were Young)
It's a tearjerker and a complete feeling-down-on-myself song, but I LOVE it. Love it love it love it to bits.
youtube
孙燕姿:《克卜勒》 (Stefanie Sun: Kepler)
Love it. Instant feeling of having someone support and love me.
youtube
张韶涵:《呐喊》 (Angela Zhang: nahan/Scream)
The energy of this is unmatched. The duet version of this she did with Xiao Zhan is also incredible.
youtube
光良:《童话》 (Michael Wong: tonghua/fairy tale)
this sappy classic was the first thing I heard when I turned on the television in a Beijing hotel room, 2005. I scrambled to copy down the artist's name and song name and had a friend help me hunt down an album.
youtube
I'll probably remember ten more songs I should've included once I post this, but hey, nobody said this'd have to be the last one. Have recs you think I might enjoy? Let me know!!

Dear Xiao Zhan & Wang Yibo,
Hi. You don't know me because I am a slightly eccentric, white, retired lady with a spoiled Shih Tzu and dubious eyesight...but i digress.
As you two may recall, you both shot to fame in The Untamed (or CQL, as you probably know it better).
I watched your show in 2022, at which time I could not spell Beijing, let alone find it on a map.
Actually, it turns out - amusingly enough - i had the entire country of China in the wrong place in the map in my head (the same one where Reno NV is 5 miles from Las Vegas)!
I had China & Mongolia and Siberia/Russia completely flipped about. Who knew the Himalayas weren't near Shanghai! Not me!
Anyway,
Where was I? Oh, your live drama series. I'm a pushover for cute people in hanfu. And, see, I know translations are tricky to do well & can be awful (looking at you, Netflix).
So, i thought to myself, oh, it was somewhere in Episode 20 (around the time i wanted to punch Wei Ying in the face for being mean to Lan Zhan who had just spent 3 looooonng months in the wilderness with Jiang Cheng, aka "Grumpy Bro").
I thought: Self, if you could learn a bit of modern Chinese, you wouldn't be dependent on subtitles!
Yes! A brilliant idea!
And then i thought: Self, if you knew some Chinese history and some things about Chinese politics and culture, both ancient & modern, why if you did that, the drama (and Lan Zhan's speech patterns) would make more sense!
So, i hit the library. I googled. I watched history vids. I read articles.
And here we are, 2 years later, and I am still clueless why calling Lan Zhan "gege" (elder brother) is such a turn- on, but then, I don't get all the biting either. I just roll with it. Kind of like Wei Ying.
Fun fact: The Yangtze River is 6300 km long. It flows from a height of 5 km in the mountains all the way to Shanghai, where it dumps into the ocean in the same place it has for the last 11 million years. Except the Three Gorges Dam (built on ancient earthquake subsidence and fault lines) is stopping the silt from flowing into the area, so eventually poor Shanghai is going to sink beneath the rising tides of climate change. (Sure hope you guys don't own real estate there. Unless you want to swim in your livingroom).
Then there were oracle bones, the meaning of li, Confucious, chengyu, & the entire Han Dynasty, which gave me my favorite emperor, who is (given name) Liu Bang (劉邦). He was not a noble or even gentry. He schmoozed his way, more or less, into a job as a county deputy sheriff who was kind of lazy and drank a lot. A screw up (probably his) in a group prisoner transfer led to him becoming a war lord & then emperor of China. What's not to love!
So, thanks for it all, guys. I started out just wanting to fan girl you, and now I'm at least half-way into an associate degree in China, um, stuff. A bit eccentric of me, yes, but it keeps me off the streets and out of the pool halls, so i can't complain.

Honestly the deeper I get into this fandom the more I think that LWJ is the character who people least understand. WWX’s actions and reasonings are misunderstood by a lot of people, but I feel like his main character traits/flaws/quirks are still apparent in most of the fandoms metas or writings about him. Metas/writings about LWJ always feel like a coin toss: will you get novel!LWJ, who has depth and personality? or will you get some random guy who’s quiet and likes rabbits?
Hahah It's true they don't get Lan Wangji at all!!! Just to clarify WWX has quirks but no flaws* lol. Back to LWJ though, It's so sad because he's hilarious and fascinating and brilliant. His character is wonderful:
I guess a lot of people believe the murder of the remaining Changs were Xiao Xingchen’s revenge, right? Hanguang Jun, what about you? What do you think?”
Lan Wangji shook his head slowly. “Without the complete picture, I cannot comment.”
Wei Wuxian deeply admired his friend’s attitude, his principles and his way of handling affairs. Beaming, he drank another mouthful of liquor. (Chapter 30)
and then there's the sass!
Quietly, he said, “Hanguang Jun, help me ask what this place is, what it’s used for, and who built it.”
Lan Wangji was a master of the qin language. He did not require any time to think before his steady and reliable hand plucked a couple of pure, clear notes. After a moment, his guqin’s strings sounded a couple more times on their own. Wei Wuxian asked hurriedly, “What did it say?”
“I do not know,” Lan Wangji said.
“Huh?”
Nonchalantly, Lan Wangji repeated, “It said, ‘I do not know.’”
“…” Wei Wuxian looked at him, suddenly remembering how, many years ago, they had had a similar conversation about “Suibian.” He rubbed his nose, speechless. Lan Zhan’s grown up too much. He’s even learned how to make me choke.
PHRASING! jk Anyway, WWX is hilariously peeved that he can't get the same reactions from Wangji he would get out of him when they were young!
Upon seeing Lan Wangji turn a deaf ear to his antics, Wei Wuxian continued playing with the sash while thinking to himself, I didn’t expect Lan Zhan’s desire to avenge himself upon me to be this strong. He’s now trying to get back at me for each and every time I teased him back in the day, and is determined to prevent me from having any fun. This is a bit too much personal growth. Not only has his cultivation improved, his formerly thin skin has as well! (Chapter 25)
and genuinely excited when he sees it's still the same Lan Wangji!
Honorable Hanguang Jun, this Wei fellow has no intention of heaping discredit upon you, but without me, you’d be hopeless, making inquiries this way. If you managed to learn anything, now that would be strange.”
These words were perhaps a bit rude, but Lan Wangji’s gaze softened, and he uttered a quiet “mm.”
Wei Wuxian laughed. “‘Mm? What ‘mm?’ Even after that, still ‘mm?’” But his stomach leapt with joy as he silently criticized Lan Wangji. He only knows how to say ‘mm.’ Turn’s out he’s still boring after all! (Chapter 28)
Mmmhmmm. I think one of the worst mistakes people make about LWJ's character is to make it seem like LWJ needed Wei Wuxian to come into his life to become a righteous person when it's not the case at all. The reason WangXian makes sense is because they're the same on the inside.
This should be clear because we see plenty of proof of Wangji's cleverness and righteousness from the Cloud Recesses arc - he takes the same punishment as Wei Wuxian; to the Xuanwu cave- he doesn't let Mianmian get used as turtle bait and is enraged at Sushe's behavior; He doesn't try to take credit for defeating the beast; In the Lotus pod extra we even get a glimpse of all the little acts of kindness he performs casually with no expectations-
The old woman, “Young Master, the lake doesn’t let anyone inside at night. If you want to go, you should hurry up and get there before dusk.”
Lan WangJi repeated, “Thank you.”
Just as he was about to leave, he saw the woman hold her thin bamboo pole high up in the air, unable to knock down a branch stuck under the roof. With a point of his finger, his sword energy struck the branch off, and he turned around to leave. (Lotus Pod)
Although he was warned that he needs to hurry or he won't be able to pick lotus pods he still stops in a field to help an injured farmer.
The young man single-handedly lifted the roof even four farmers couldn’t!
A few moments later, one of the farmers whispered something to the others. With only some hesitation, they proceeded to carry the wounded man over. When they went inside the shed, all of them glanced at Lan WangJi. Lan WangJi looked straight ahead. After they let the person down, two people came over, “Y-… Young Master, let go of it. We can do it.”
Lan WangJi shook his head. The two farmers insisted, “You’re too young. You won’t hold out.”
As they spoke, they raised their hands, wanting to help him with the roof. Lan WangJi only glanced at him. He didn’t say anything, only retracting some of the strength he exerted. At once, the farmers’ expressions changed.
Lan WangJi turned back around, letting his strength flow back. Embarrassed, the farmers went back to squatting.
He also doesn't want to harm the spirit that's haunting the shed:
It was this spirit that made the roof abnormally heavy, unable to be lifted by ordinary people no matter what.
Lan WangJi didn’t bring the tools used to liberate spirits. Since the creature had no intent to harm others, of course he couldn’t beat its soul apart without a care. As of the moment, it looked like he wouldn’t be able to persuade it to let down its hanging corpse, either, so he could only prop up the roof for now. He’d report it afterward and sent people to deal with it. (Lotus Pod exr)
These moments seem so simple on the outside but they paint such a clear and lovely picture of his character and how complementary his and Wei Wuxian's world views are. As MXTX wrote in her postscripts:
"Both WWX and LWJ are highly ideal characters, so there wouldn’t be too much dispute on their moral standing. They’re perfect as the protagonists...
All of their character elements were created in binary opposition. The bold and the principled, the concealed yearning and the flaunting coquetry, the red rose and the white rose, the cold, dignified one and the devilish, untamed one… The more different they were, the better. Still, their core was the same."

Flash Prompt: One of the Wangxian babies is going out on a date. The parents are ... not handling it well.
"Wei Ying, anything could happen!" Lan Wangji hears himself plead, for what feels like the hundredth time that morning, "What if that Nie boy goes out with Xiaohui for long enough to win his heart, and then leaves him?"
"It's a bit early to be worrying about that, don't you think?" Wei Ying yawns, taking another sip of tea. “They’re only going to the mall, my love. Eighteen is too young for love and fancy candlelit dinners, so you don’t need to worry about Yu’er getting swept off his feet anytime soon.”
“I gave you love and fancy candlelit dinners when we were eighteen.”
“You had a car, your father’s black card, and no sense of financial responsibility,” Wei Ying says affectionately. “A-Yan can’t prove himself to Xiao-Yu with anything but his feelings just. yet And they’re both eighteen now, so just be supportive and ask Xiao-Yu if he had fun when he comes home.”
“Supportive? I am the most supportive,” Lan Wangji grumbles. “Very well. I’ll do as you say--”
“Well done, sweetheart!”
“--but I require compensation. Ten kisses for every hour Xiaohui is away.”
Wei Ying laughs, and kisses him twice on each cheek before pressing six swift kisses to his lips.
“Gladly,” he says, with his beautiful eyes so wide and deep that Lan Wangji wishes he could drown in them. “It’s been two hours already, my Lan Zhan--so come here, and I’ll kiss you again.”

Just how much charm does the <The Untamed> have to earn both young actors’ first times? #Harper’sBazaar# #XiaoZhanWangYibospecialedition, let’s talk about their first times, and their stories of youths in the jianghu~
Tumblr media
Xiao Zhan
Black open shirt – Uma Wang
Black agate gourd necklace – Qeelin
 Wang Yibo
Black shirt – Heaven Gaia
Black long-sleeved shirt – Yohji Yamamoto
Black leather belt – model’s own
Xiao Zhan - A smiling journey between worlds
Xiao Zhan somewhat “dislikes” Wei Wuxian’s propensity for crying, and he spent the entire filming period with constantly reddened eyes.  Those few months of filming, from Hengdian to Guizhou. Xiao Zhan has finally said goodbye to Wei Wuxian, and advises him, “Wei Wuxian, don’t pretend to be strong anymore, take good care of yourself.”
The image of Wei Wuxian, in Xiao Zhan’s mind, is that of a “very naughty teenager.” Despite experiencing so much hardship, Wei Wuxian is still able to maintain his cheerful demeanour. There are lots of times where we have to face something we do not want to face – and that is the only way we can become stronger. “That is growth,” Xiao Zhan says.
In the show, Wei Wuxian chose to face life with his emotions bared, smiling and scolding as he goes. Xiao Zhan has discussed this with the screenwriters – how can a person who has undergone so much misfortune still be able to smile? And finally, Xiao Zhan found the character’s foundation: “Wei Wuxian’s temperament is a kind one, an optimistic one. A temperament like that would not change, no matter how the story progressed.”

Xiao Zhan’s favourite scenes were during Wei Wuxian’s growing years in Lotus Pier – he feels that it is a warm and caring place. The motto of Lotus Pier’s Jiang Clan is “To attempt the impossible.” “So, within that broad expanse of what is morally right, you are free to grow in however way you want.” Xiao Zhan explains.
It was love, and its support, that allowed Wei Wuxian to experience the drastic changes in his life without turning evil. Xiao Zhan says, “Wei Wuxian’s upbringing at Lotus Pier instilled a correct set of values in him.”
To Xiao Zhan, Lan Wangji is “principled and calm, a person who talks little but burns with feelings inside.” As for his first time working with Wang Yibo, Xiao Zhan is full of praises, “It was quite easy to get into character, acting with him. When I first met Wang Yibo, I felt like this person has a sort of cold aura to him, a sense of distance. That sense of strangers, do not interact – Lan Wangji is like that.”

The “reunion” between Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji, sixteen years later, is the climax of the entire show. They filmed that scene from 8pm at night to 4am the next morning, Xiao Zhan remembers. The scene had very high requirements of the actors’ emotions, and the camera angle, blocking, and aesthetic of the scenes had to be coordinated perfectly. “It took quite a while.” Xiao Zhan says.
<The Untamed> is Xiao Zhan’s first time filming at “Heng Country”. “It lives up to its name – it has everything. I can take two steps and bump into a friend!” Xiao Zhan comments with surprise.
During break times between scenes, the young adults of the cast would gather round to play games. Wang Yibo, the gaming aficionado, often scorns Xiao Zhan’s not-so-good gaming skills. “I just feel that, is there a need to be so serious about entertaining fun.” He is of the opinion that everyone having a good time is enough for him.
“I would like to try acting as a charming, black-hearted villain.” Xiao Zhan replies earnestly, when asked what other kind of role he would like to try. He hopes to portray a character who has a personality completely opposite of his, in the future.

Q: What is something you most want to say to Wei Wuxian?
A: Stop pretending to be so strong, take good care of yourself and your loved ones.
Q: Of the whole filming period, what is something unforgettable that you may, perhaps, remember for the rest of your life?
A: There was one scene that required filming in the water, a manmade lake, made by the crewmembers.  The initial plan was to film that scene right after  shooting commenced. During then, the weather still wasn’t very cold, and the water was very clean, but we ended up dragging it out for about one or two months before we finally shot it. By then, the weather had gotten cold, and the water had gotten not-so-clean, and I had to submerge my whole body into it, including my head. It was truly unforgettable.
Q: Looking back at the entire drama shoot, which scene are you most satisfied with? And why?
A: I’m pretty satisfied with the emotional scenes I did. But I have the impression that, filming this show, I basically kept filming crying scenes, crying and sobbing my way through. I’m also not sure why Wei Wuxian likes to cry so much?
Wang Yibo - The passion within an aloof teenager
His first time acting in an ancient drama, Wang Yibo had not expected it to be so difficult. The sweltering World Studios, the unnatural headpiece. He is much like Lan Wangji, a cold, wordless exterior hiding a burning, passionate heart. Wang Yibo’s comment on his portrayal of Lan Wangji, after filming ended, “You’re rather handsome.”
<The Untamed> is Wang Yibo’s first time filming an ancient drama. Under the sweltering heat of Hengdian, he experienced his first headpiece. During the performance, the headpiece pulls forcefully on the actors’ scalps, making the facial muscles rather tight. As a result, actors require a lot more control of their facial muscles to portray the required movements and expressions. “That’s why they say ancient dramas are more tiring,” Wang Yibo concludes.
Wang Yibo had to perform with layers and layers of costumes on him, despite the heat of the Hengdian summer. Though the robes he wore in the show appear elegant, they are still long draping robes, no matter how light and breathable the fabric is. Luckily, Lan Wangji doesn’t have a lot of lines. “No lines, so I didn’t need to memorize anything. But I had a lot of fight scenes.”

Lan Wangji experienced three stages of his life in the drama. In Wang Yibo’s opinion, interpreting the older Lan Wangji was indeed difficult. But teenage Lan Wangji was what Wang Yibo anticipated the most.
It took Wang Yibo many tries before he grasped the real Lan Wangji, at the start of filming. “He has a deadpan face, but his mind is confident and planned out. His gaze had to be very firm. I didn’t grasp that at the very beginning, so it felt a bit like he’s sleepy.” Wang Yibo describes how he appeared at the start of filming. After some guidance from the director, Wang Yibo immediately altered his portrayal, and his gaze livened up.
Tumblr media
In the show, Lan Wangji grew up in a strict, stern household. Solemn and dignified for his young age, he felt that “some things should be done properly,” until he met Wei Wuxian. It was this “mischievous but earnest” person who opened the doors to a new world for Lan Wangji. “It was Wei Wuxian’s appearance that changed Lan Wangji’s views.”
Wang Yibo, like Lan Wangji, is not a person who likes to talk. Despite his speechlessness, Lan Wangji is very confident in the things he is skilled at, and Wang Yibo is similar as well. In order to approach Lan Wangji’s body appearance, Wang Yibo lost a lot of weight, and his gaze grew calm and cold.
Once he puts on the robes of Lan Wangji, sunny, cheerful Wang Yibo turns into that silent and reserved youth, who has a mind and logic of his own.

Q: What is something you most want to say to Lan Wangji?
A: You’re rather handsome.
Q: Of the whole filming period, what is something unforgettable that you may, perhaps, remember for the rest of your life?
A: Something unforgettable that I may remember for the rest of my life… I guess it’s that smoke cake. Once we set it off, it feels like you can’t see anyone more than one metre away from you, that kind of scene.
Q: Looking back at the entire drama shoot, which scene are you most satisfied with? And why?
A: The fight scenes were quite alright. As for a particular scene, let me think… When I first appeared, when Wei Wuxian first went to the Cloud Recesses. I think Lan Wangji’s coldness there was quite alright.
