I really don’t think we should be treating morality as a linear thing in ASOIAF because what often happens is that we start to stray from the actual conversations that we need to be having regarding the depths of making a moral choice and even the circumstances involved. To try and blankly paint any one character as the “most morally good” isn’t really taking us anywhere. And it certainly isn’t helpful when people in this fandom want to try and prove that characters are “grey” but not moral (what does that even mean??) because they did one “bad” thing. If ASOIAF stans were to have their way, then:

Jon is not a morally good person because he threatened Gilly

Dany cannot be considered to be compassionate because she sanctioned torture against the wine seller’s daughters

Arya cant be good because she has killed people

and so on, and so on….

But this is such a draining, and oft times frustrating, conversation to have because you see just how shallow the above listed examples are? Readers are listing only singular instances across a narrative that spans thousand and thousands of pages, and there’s absolutely no context involved. Why did Jon threaten Gilly? Why did Dany resort to torture and at one point did she do it? Who did Arya kill and why? And why do those singular instances negate everything else in their arcs?

What usually happens when we have the 12847647282th unnecessary conversation about who is the “most good” character in ASOIAF is that we start getting blanket statements with no elaboration. And the only people ever considered are Ned, Brienne, and Davos, and sometimes the children like Shireen or Tommen. Mind you, Ned and Davos are not perfect or without their own faults either; much has been said about Ned’s abilities as a father and it’s implied that Davos was not entirely faithful to his wife. And based on her current arc, Brienne will surely have to make morally tough choices regarding oaths and knightly honor. Plus theres the irony of including literal children when they have not been put in situations where they actually have to make morally difficult choices and live with the consequences.

ASOIAF shows us that people who are capable of incredible kindness and compassion are also capable of doing unpleasant things.

Jon threatened Gilly….because he was trying to save another child whom he believed to be at risk of human sacrifice(!!) and was stuck between a rock and a hard place. But why does that singular instance negate the fact that his arc has been about him standing up for the “lesser than”? Why does that negate the fact that he stood up for Sam against a superior when there was nothing to gain for him? Why does it negate the fact that he went out of his way to equip Arya in a way that society would have deemed inappropriate? Why does it negate the fact that he dedicated the entirety of his time as Lord Commander to fight an institution that had upheld racism/xenophobia for millennia? Why should we filter out all those moments of kindness, compassion, and deep empathy that Jon has even without him thinking?

Dany sanctioned torture….but she was trying to solve the murder of an innocent victim AND this brought her no joy. But why does that negate the fact that when she gained unimaginable power, she could’ve high tailed to Westeros to use it to her benefit and become queen, but instead chose to stay in Essos where she has no personal responsibility just so she could fight the institutional evil that is slavery? Why does it negate Dany who went to personally treat plague victims at great risk to herself?

Arya has killed some….but it’s in self defense or in defense of others who are disenfranchised. But why does this negate that she is one of the few people in the series how goes out of her way to show kindness and friendship to those who are not as economically or politically advantaged as she is (e.g., Mycah)? Why does it negate that she took fellow slaves under her protection when she herself had little power to fight for her own survival at Harrenhall? Why does it negate that when she saw those caged soldiers whom she was angry with for their actions, instead of leaving them to die instead offered them the only kindness she could at the moment: a drink of water?

Trying to have arguments about morality but stripping everything down to ‘x character did y bad thing (regardless of context) and that’s why they can’t be good’ is, to be blunt, ridiculous. And it isn’t a particularly interesting way to engage with the text. Character journeys, especially well written ones, are rarely ever in a straight line. There’s amazing highs and terrible lows. GRRM gives us so many characters like Jon, Dany, Arya, Sansa, Ned, etc. who even in their lows, have gleams of compassion and exceptional kindness. It doesn’t do anyone any good to filter those moments out to make the books more digestible; and I’m being a little generous here, because so many readers have a very shallow level of engagement with the series and it shows in conversation. And we also shouldn’t pit these characters unfairly against those who have never been in similarly difficult situations that required them to make hard choices. Because when we do, we start to completely miss the point all together.

Synopsis: You think of all the times you flirt with Eddie and he doesn't realize.

You couldn't believe it. You wanted to bang your head against a wall. Either Eddie Munson wasn't into you or was a certified idiot. You knew it had taken him three times to graduate, but you never really thought about it as some people don't do well in a classroom setting. You believed that to be the case for Eddie. He could create intricate campaigns for DND as well as explaining chord progessions and why they sounded good. He was insanely smart at things, he just had difficulty focusing sometimes. And yet, you started to feel like you were losing brain cells around him.

You liked Eddie Munson. You thought Eddie would have picked up on the fact since you flirted with him a lot. And yet, he never seemed to notice. It was ridiculous.

You had trailed your hand up his arm. He didn't flinch and just smiled at you. You said he could play a bard as his next character, since he was so charismatic and cute. Eddie had thanked you and said being cute wasnt a requirement, but he was the DM and would be running the campaign.

You had tried leaning in when talking to him. Eddie didn't seem to notice, continuing to talk and move about so often he moved away from you unintentionally. You complimented how he smelled once. He said it was just weed and if you liked it he could give you some (it was absolutely not just weed).

You tried to bat your eyes at him in a flirtatious manner. He asked if you had something in your eye. You tried that seductive lip bite thing you've read about in books. He asked if you were constipated. You had tried the good old yawn and put your arm around them technique. Twice. The first time, Eddie had playfully bit your wrist. The second time, he licked you. You wanted his tongue on you, but not in that way. Of course, both times you went to remove your arm he had grabbed your hand and pulled it closer. But nothing had changed after, it was like it never happened.

So you took to older techniques of flirting. You dropped something so he would pick it up. Eddie just joked that you were clumsy, which annoyed you so much you didn't even flirt further (regardless of how true or untrue the statement was). You made sure your ankles were exposed. He didn't even notice. You weren't sure what you expected with that one. You could try to faint, but weren't sure if Eddie would catch you or not.

You dropped compliments all the time while Eddie brushed them off. You bought him a new ring to wear. He claimed it was metal and would fit right in with the rest. Eddie had put it on then gave you one he wore and said, "Now we're even." You had went home and screamed into a pillow. You also kept his ring on a chain and wore it half the time. Eddie had simply smiled and gave you two thumbs up.

The most recent thing was when you had held your hand up against his. Eddie's hands were slightly bigger than yours. You had mentioned how big they were and hinted at what else was big. Eddie had given you a wink and wiggled his eyebrows. He then went back to explaining the newest campaign. You interlocked his hand with yours and said it fit well. Eddie had simply smiled and said thanks. Thanks!

No. Nope. You were pissed. You hadn't wanted to just flat out say it but enough was enough. You liked Eddie Munson and he was going to hear it once and for all.

You stormed into the Munson trailer without knocking. Eddie looked up from where he was sitting eating chips on the couch. Before he could chastise you for entering you snapped," What the hell is wrong with you?" Eddie's eyes narrowed, "The fuck? You storm into my house and-" "Shut up!"

Eddie's jaw clenches and you glare at him. "No, seriously Eddie, what the hell? I've been flirting with you for months and you don't even react?" Eddie's mouth drops open. He blinks a few times as you continue," I've tried every known thing in the book, but you don't even think twice!"

"You were flirting with me?" Eddie asks quietly. You huff and flop onto the couch next to him," Apparently not well if you couldn't tell." You cross your arms and pout. Eddie clears his throat," I mean I thought you were flirting but...just didn't believe you meant it. Not with me at least." You look at Eddie who is blushing. "Why would I flirt with you if I didn't mean it?" You frown slightly. "Practice? Wouldn't be the first time. Ya know, flirt with the freak." Eddie cleared his throat and your heart sank.

"I uh liked it though," Eddie turns to look at you, "the flirting." You inhale and exhale slowly looking at him. "You just have to be clear. Communicate to me. I overthink things and convince myself I am overanalyzing. That's why I'm a good DM, I think of like every scenario and what could happen. I explained the uh flirting away. Just thought you were being friendly or felt comfortable." Eddie shrugs slightly. "Okay. Then let me be clear. I like you Eddie Munson. Not just as a friend. I want you to be my boyfriend."

Eddie's smile slowly spreads across his face. Eyes lighting up and twinkling with joy," And I like you. And I would love to be your boyfriend." "Good." You nod. Eddie reaches out and interlocks his fingers with yours," Good." You both sit in silence for a moment. "So are you gonna kiss me or-" "yup, yes, yeah absolutely."

Ok so another au idea but story barely changes because this post focuses on Todd. I had small conversation with someone in one of my post made my brain go explode and remember the small scenarios I have with my own nice Todd and it made me giggle cause of the friendship.

In this au, Todd's relationship with Ballister started rough because the boy is insensitive and doesn't realize it.

He was always left confused as to why Ballister seemed so mad everytime they run into each other until Ambrosius (they're friends here) tells Todd about his problem of being rude to others without realizing it.

Upon knowing this Todd feels guilty and plans to apologize to Ballister, before also realizing that he must have done the same thing to Ambrosius a couple of times as well, so apologized to Ambrosius before looking for Ballister (Ambrosius helped him apologize to Ballister).

From then on, Ballister had two best friends who protects him from the bullying and the hate.

Todd developed a crush on Ballister, but soon discovers later that Ambrosius has a crush on Ballister as well. They would have become rivals if Ambrosius didn't share the fact that he(Ambrosius) had been crushing on Ballister before the three of them became best friends.

Todd felt bad knowing that Ambrosius had hid his feelings for so long while he just developed it recently, so he gave up and helped Ambrosius instead.

Cut to Todd's terrible wingman skills whenever Ballister is around. It always results into Ambrosius glaring at him while Todd just smiles and gives him a thumbs up.

Ambrosius: *whispering* "wuh- Todd! what are you doing?!?" Todd: *whispering back* "trying to get you alone with Ballister!" Ambrosius:*whispers angrily* "WITH A RUBBER CHICKEN AND A SANDWHICH?!?"

Surprisingly it works and Ambrosius has no idea why but he'll think about that later, and he'll also thank Todd about it.

At some point, Todd tells Ambrosius that he also had a crush on Ballister but gave it up so Ambrosius could have Bal instead. Made Ambrosius feel bad but Todd reassures him that its fine, and that it would hurt Ambrosius more if he(Todd) would end up with Ballister when Ambrosius had been crushing on him for years.

Soon Ambrosius and Ballister made it official, which made Todd happy for them. Despite the change of relationship, the trio stayed close and would always include Todd.

Except for date nights of course.

As a result, Todd became their child. Always keeping an eye on him and making sure that Todd doesn't accidentally insult someone without realizing it was an insult and to translate what Todd meant to others.

Ambrosius and Ballister would say "mean word/s" to let Todd know. And Todd would correct himself.

Will also add that Todd has the habit to just not continue or pause when he speaks because he assumes that others know what he is talking about, so Ballister and Ambrosius has to always give him a sign to let him know he needs to explain more.

No idea how the story would go in this version because I only focused on the silly Todd moments. Have two scenes that I thought of: Knighting ceremony Ambrosius helped Ballister into his armor, adjusting his shoulder pads in place to secure it. Ballister turned around, smiling at him as if to tell him thank you from his smile. Ballister was about to speak when suddenly an arm was placed over his shoulder which a bit of force which took him and Ambrosius by surprise.

"Hey Ballister, I know things were really tough for you back then, and I really thought you don't belong here." Todd finishes and lightly punched Ballister's shoulder. They were silent for a moment, expecting Todd to continue but didn't.

"And?"

"And what? You proved me wrong and now you're going to be a knight." Todd answers , feeling confused before realizing why both of them seem to look like they were anticipating something.

"Oh, did I do it again? Sorry." Todd apologized, taking his arm off of Ballister before moving to rub the back of his neck sheepishly.

"No worries. it's all right" Ballister reassured him with a smile.

Punchable face "I don't need a si-" "Every villain needs a sidekick"

"I'm not a villain-"

"WOAH! sick murder wall!" Nimona exclaims, excitedly hoping over to the said wall with pictures of people and evidence. "Are these your next targets?" "What?" "Who do you want to kill first?" Nimona asks, tapping her fingers together in a sinister way. Her eyes dart around the pictures on the wall before settling on the picture of Todd with a smug smile on his face. She gasps before pointing towards it. "THIS ONE! This one looks extremely punchable!" Nimona clenched her fist with an excited grin as she pictures herself beating the punchable guy. "Don't say that! He's actually really nice!" Ballister said, clearly offended about what she said about Todd. "Well, he can be insensitive but he's just not aware of it sometimes- wait no- GAH, THAT IS NOT A MURDER WALL!"
