QUEEN AND KING OF HEARTS
Happy Halloween everyone! Hope you’re having fun in this spooky day. I’ve got a treat of my own today as there is once again, a double feature. Tony and Janet, and also their evil counterparts because why not. I decided to theme it after playing cards as I thought it would be very fitting for them (also hearts because, Tony and Janet are the heart and soul of the Avengers for a reason duhhh)
I hope you guys enjoy them as it took me about less than two weeks to do on this (than expected) so yeah.

The Darkhold (event)
So, I read 'The Darkhold' event on Hoopla. It's... mid, to be honest. It's one of those undercard events Marvel does every now n then that will ultimately not matter but could be a fun time. This does have some good parts - the Alpha & Omega issues werent really for me and I skipped the Blade issue a few panels deep. Here's the deal: someone digs up The Darkhold, a book of evil magic that also keeps an evil magician at bay. SPOILER: it's Dr. Doom. The Scarlet Witch often has to deal with The Darkhold and said evil magician (Cthon), so she gets wrangled into this mess. Wanda figures out that she needs five warriors to defeat Chthon and she assembles her crew of five. She tells them to read a little bit of a story in The Darkhold, and things predictably go off the rails. Also, this plan is bad. Whatever though, the event is off and running. So that was all in the beginner Alpha issue. Things close out in the Omega issue. In between, each of the five get their own issue of "things have gone to SHIIIIIIIIT!" They are surprisingly solid on their own (though I skipped the Blade one). They don't quite come together though. The Iron Man one does setup Darkhold Tony and it is BALLS CRAZY. The others dont really do tie back in though? Wasp's maybe does, as her changes are largely just "different outfit". Spider-Man seems to change a lot and his issue doesnt address *any* of it (even though it's good). The Black Bolt issue is really good and if you dig like ‘The Twilight Zone’, you’ll probably really enjoy it. But then we close out with the Omega issue for the boss fight. It's fine, if a bit generic in the Alpha and Omega issues. The one-shots in the middle will largely determine if you'd rank this positively or negatively, but the event does lack cohesion as a whole. It can be found now on Hoopla.

Concept for an episode of What If…?: What if Nick Fury’s roster for the original Avengers was completely different?
* This would at least be a two-parter
* This would be one of the most divergent timelines in the MCU since pretty much the entire flow of events would be different compared to the main timeline. Not just different Avengers, but different threats.
* Keep in mind, this timeline is completely different, so the characters that appear will have altered personalities and motivations.
* The line-up, for me, would be -
Alexei Shostakov (Red Guardian) replaces Steve Rogers (Captain America) as the Avenger who is the pride of their respective nation
Xu Wenwu replaces Thor as the Avenger whose powers come from a mystical item(s)
Robbie Reyes (Ghost Rider) replaces Bruce Banner (Hulk) as the Avenger who transforms into a powerful monster
Hope van Dyne (Wasp) replaces Tony Stark (Iron Man) as the Avenger who is a brilliant inventor and an executive of a powerful corporation
Gamora replaces Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow) as the Avenger who is a femme fatale spy seeking to redeem themselves
Frank Castle (The Punisher) replaces Clint Barton (Hawkeye) as the Avenger who is a regular guy and a combat veteran
/
/
/
Despite the changes, there are parallels to the original timeline, such as -
1) The main villain is an evil Shang-Chi. In this timeline, he wants to usurp his father as the leader of the Ten Rings (paralleling Loki’s actions).
2) Gamora feels guilty about abandoning her sister, Nebula (paralleling Natasha and Yelena)
3) Frank Castle is a depressed loner since he lost his family (paralleling Clint’s love for his family)
4) Hope van Dyne requires a constant use of Quantum Realm energy due to an incident in Afghanistan (paralleling Tony’s injury)
5) Alexei Shostakov hopes to see his wife, Melina, once again and is depressed over the loss of his daughter Natasha, unaware that Natasha had actually been transferred to the Winter Soldier program (paralleling Peggy and Bucky)
6) Robbie Reyes is on the run from the Ancient One and the Sanctum Sanctorum due to him keeping the Darkhold away from anyone to use (paralleling Bruce running away from General Ross)

your witch hat atelier piece is adorable, are there are any other non-X comics that you're fond of?
yes! i am not a very broad reader when it comes to comics, but there are a lot i enjoy.
i've really liked sleepless, mamo and step by bloody step were both really good!
si spurrier's hellblazer ruled, and was one of the first appearances of constantine i've read in a while that actually felt substantial, and substantially scummy. Both bergara and campbell killed on it, and jordie bellaire is one of my favorite colorists (her work in wasp: darkhold and killjoys: national anthem also rules).
in the past couple of years i've been able to read my body unspooling by leo fox and anomoia and prism by fatima wajid ( i think i first read both creators bc of shortbox 2022?), and those comics all stick in my head, story wise or stylistically. ALSO. c'est bon anthology vol 51 is incredible, and has some of my favorite comics in it. i think about art from that anthology all the time, and i really need to get my hands on some other volumes.
i obviously loved witch hat atelier a lot. the writing is fantastic and the art is beautiful, and i can't wait to see where its going. it really hit that sweet spot of being good and making me want to make drawings about it, which a lot of things i still really love don't do! including most of the stuff i've mentioned here. i think that's fine. the stuff i'm getting out of these other works doesn't have to directly lead to my own output yk

we need better female representation
this is for all those people who i thought would feel the same. i just want to discuss the two dominating female characters in the multiverse saga: wanda and sylvie. okay, so first of all, this is clear of the statements like ‘she’s badass’ or ‘she’s hot.’ i could just go look at the actress if thats what i wanted in the character.
wanda: i understand that many people like her and that i might get hate, but it’s just an opinion. i think that if scarlet witch was meant to be a villain, then why try to justify her actions? it was just cheap writing to drive a powerful character to become a murderer because she lost her family. and then try and make us empathise with her. what she had gone through was horrible, but instead of adding depth to her (beautiful) character over time, they ruined her whole arc. she knew what she was doing in westview. even if it’s hard to let go, there is no excuse to enslaving and torturing people. a lot of male characters have done that too. but they have faced the consequences. wanda just escaped and started reading the darkhold, which became another excuse for her bad actions. god i was so disappointed. i was really excited to see a significantly powerful character who dominates, who also happens to be a strong female character. but it was so easy to make her an angry vengeful person and down pull other characters to make herself seem powerful right?
sylvie: her character straight up agitated me. at first i didn’t see why they added her to the show. i had no emotional connection with her from the past, and its kinda hard to focus on her when you actually want to see loki’s development. what was special about her wasn’t really a specialty. even if she didn’t want to rule, she was just vengeful and angry all the time. again, everything backed up by her tragic past. if you keep giving everyone the same back story, just exactly how many times should we sympathise with someone? i remember characters like natasha, who were self-made after embracing their flaws. i remember shuri, who was faced with a decision to save one nation or save both. i remember the wasp (hope) who actually cared about her family and her team mates. none of these characters went on blaming their (specifically male) counterparts and calling them annoying. sylvie didn’t even bother to take accountability for what she did. she didn’t regard loki’s emotions, and she couldn’t see past the fact that she was only thinking about what she believes. i don’t think that shows strength, that shows weakness.
it would be easy for any of you to say that ‘if it was a male we would have shrugged it off’. but marvel actually gave their male characters deeper arcs and more time to develop. they made them face consequences and didn’t make their stories all about their hardships. it’s also easy to say that ‘i understand why she did it because she suffered and we would have done the same’. it’s the wrong message coming from movies/tv shows that show good over bad. we need to motivate people to find strength in hard times. we need strong characters.
i honestly watch marvel for suspense and plot, because that’s what i’m into. and i love the content (except for 2022)
but,
i think one thing marvel needs to understand, is that they can’t just put some white woman, give her a sappy backstory, make her do ‘badass’ things, make sure she’s called ‘girlboss’ on twitter and call it a day. we don’t need mean, bitchy attitudes and damaging actions.
we need better female representation.

Dear Mr. Whitley,
It seems one plot that has been happening a lot for Janet Van Dyne in the last decade or so is that she keeps living through lifetimes that aren't her own. First she lived through the Planet X timeline with the Uncanny Avengers, then she was shown a twisted version of herself by the Darkhold, and most recently, she was stuck in an alternate scenario by the Creature from Kosmos.
If you got another chance to write for the Wasps, would you try out an alternate timeline for Janet?
Honestly, I'd just like to see Janet have more adventures of her own and/or at the lead of her own team. She's had so few.

one of the most annoying thing abt liking hank pym for me personally is how a lot of people who hate him seem to think they're telling me new information about him or what they're saying hasn't been said before. "he's abusive" do you think i have read as many comics with this man as i have and somehow managed to avoid that issue? do you think i don't know what tie-ins, what aus, what arcs you're talking about? you think i don't know abt darkhold wasp or about the yellowjacket trail?? CBR and screenrant release articles about it like every month. you are not telling me anything new your takes are nothing i haven't seen before. read into him how you want but it isn't a new thing to do. you are not unique in the comic community i promise.

Into the Anthill pt 40 - The Mighty Avengers
Out of skrull captivity and back in action, Hank was tapped by Jarvis and Amadeus Cho to lead the Mighty Avengers. Tony immediately tried to take control of the team, four of the others quit (although some rejoined later), and the whole world made Chthon stronger by refusing to believe in him. Honestly a pretty normal day in the life of Hank Pym. So he stuck it out and proved them wrong, saving lives at unheard of speeds thanks to his newly-invented, multi-dimensional base of operations.
And as an added bonus, he really pissed off Norman Osborn.
Mighty Avengers vol 1 #21-24
Tsunamis of blood flooded New York, San Francisco was encased in amber, Oklahoma disappeared; all over the world bizarre natural disasters were popping up with no end in sight. Amadeus Cho named this disaster the Chaos Cascade and worked with Hercules to research it. They tracked down Jarvis once they knew they would need the Avengers, certain that he was the factor that held them together. Jarvis led Amadeus and Herc to Hank’s secret base in a Van Dyne’s outlet store outside of Chicago. Hank initially refused to help them, but they convinced him that despite his insecurities they needed someone capable of leading the Avengers and he’d done it before. His new base of operations, stored in what he deemed a “Pym Pocket” was larger on the inside and capable of linking to doorways anywhere on Earth for convenient travel. Amadeus had tracked the Chaos Cascade to Mt. Wundagore, so Hank linked to a doorway in Transia and discovered the Scarlet Witch waiting there for him with recruits for him: the new Vision, Stature, U.S.Agent, and the Hulk.
The source of the Chaos Cascade was Mordred the Mystic, who had already lured Quicksilver to Mt. Wundagore to use as a vessel for Chthon. Wasp led the charge against Mordred but Iron Man arrived on his own to finish him off and take charge of the developing team. Hank asked Tony for one good reason why he should let him lead them instead. Tony gave him a 3 word answer: "You're Hank Pym." Iron Man took Herc and U.S.Agent to deal with Chthon his way, not seeing any of the others as useful enough. He planned to detonate the mountain's uranium core hoping that would kill Chthon.
Seeking a less volatile option, Hank instead thought to broadcast to the people of the world and diminish the power Chthon gained from their fear of him. He announced to the world that he and his Avengers had the situation under control, but the global lack of faith in him actually made Chthon stronger. His ego bruised, he then worked with Amadeus to scramble the language center of Pietro's brain to keep Chthon from casting any spells. Mordred tried to siphon Chthon into his own body to help him avoid this, but Vision and Amadeus interrupted the process and sucked him back into The Darkhold. They had to temporarily download Quicksilver’s mind into Vision until Hank could put him back into his own body.
Seeing this as an opportunity to officially lead The Mighty Avengers, Hank offered everyone there membership. Iron Man, Hulk, and Quicksilver refused, leaving Wasp to lead Jocasta, Stature, Vision, Hercules, Amadeus Cho, and U.S.Agent. The Scarlet Witch who appeared to their team was secretly Loki working to undermine Norman Osborn’s efforts as the current leader of the Avengers. After solving nearly a dozen superhuman crises in one day, Hank was asked by a reporter if it was okay for him to also call his team Avengers due to Osborn’s insistence that only his own team was “official.” Hank argued that by the rules of the original Avengers Charter, since he was the only founding member operating that meant his team was by default the more official one.
While fighting the Altantean Titan off the coast of France, Wasp and Stature both grew to about 200ft in height to restrain it. Quicksilver arrived at the last second and used a cyclone to disable Titan just before the strain caused Cassie to faint. Agents Ace and One-Eyed Jacquie of G.R.A.M.P.A. (Global Reaction Agency for Mysterious Paranormal Activity) offered to deputize the Mighty Avengers into their organization to grant them legal passage into every nation, as well as to keep them out of Osborn’s jurisdiction. Hank accepted, not thrilled about the name but eager to do more good for the world.
Minor/Cameo appearances from this period:
Fantastic Four vol 3 #569
Marvels: Eye of the Camera vol 1 #1, 3
Captain Britain and MI-13 vol 1 #13

Dyk in dsmom scarlet witch's first kill was supposed to be Mordo? Basically Mordo went to Wanda's cabin to take her powers bc she was corrupted by the darkhold i think its also that he had a limp? So she behead him and presented it to dr strange when he went to her cabin, and she was also gonna kill the wasp bc she was a part of the illuminati so when Janett shrunk Wanda clapped her hands and killed her like a mosquito. Here's the link.

Bet if the boys witnessed that they would be very very terrified i mean who wouldn't 😭
omg yes i saw this! that was absolutely brutal bruh, imagine if the MoM movie rating got pushed up higher because they decided more horror and gore would be better? i'd love to have seen that version, too, as much as i despise watching horror 😅😆

Marvel comics Sept. 2023 solicitations initial thoughts
The one I did for DC a few days ago was fun.
The JMS Cap sounds promising - like a lot of JMS stories - but I’m going to have wait until what the second issue solicit promises. And Saiz on art on a Cap book gives me a strange feeling of Deja Vu. A hard maybe.
This is Iron Man’s third engagement in how many years. The thing with the Wasp happened right? I hope I’m not lying to myself on that. I find it funny because I wanna see where it goes. I know certain Emma Frost fans are livid at this, but what else is new? Could be fun. I’ll remain curious.
Percy on Predator Vs. Wolverine is ideal, but the some of the artists mentioned are sus. Probably a no.
Avengers Inc by Ewing and Kirk sounds thrilling, but Vision being a main character kinda makes me think a soft maybe. Vision just doesn’t do anything for me as a concept or a character. He’s just old Pinocchio!
Ahmed and Kuder Daredevil: Yep! Yep! Yep!
The renaissance Venom has had since 2018 - the Venomsance if you will - is so odd to me. Good for the fans I guess. Never been a fan of Venom, except when Gargan was a Venom. I was a Marvel U reader at the time and it was interesting (to say the least.)
Immortal Thor is a probable yes, but that’s subject to change. Hard to articulate thoughts about it right now.
Nightcrawler is gonna be a Spider-Man for five issues. Okay. Let me know how that goes.
Uncanny Avengers. Skip.
Never been an Alpha Flight fan.
Children of the Vault feels like it’s a placeholder series that’s setting up for something after Fall of X. Nah.
Dark X-Men #1 had a very fun cover of the characters that will be in the series. Issue #2 has Madelyne fighting... Maggot?! I hate Maggot! Stupid!
Not a big Jean Grey fan.
I’ve read two Iceman series and it took me both to realized I’m not a Bobby Drake fan.
Realm of X feels like a Magik book in disguise.
Emma Frost/Tony Stark marriage is just funny.
X-Men Red seems to be a series I should be reading, but the solicits never do the series justice. Shame.
I am going to be getting X-Force starting with #43 because Quentin Quire is finally out of the book for now.
Fall of X being a “scattering” will play big here, and I think it could work.
I hate Classified being a way to sell books.
Wolverine is a maybe, but I’ll forget and probably trade-wait.
Weapons of Vengeance!!!!!!!
Should I be reading Ghost Rider?
Wake me when Ultimate Invasion has ramifications.
ROM and Micronauts Facsimile editions? Could be fun.
Contest of Chaos is something that could be fun, but also something that people remember sparingly years from now.
Oh, it’s just happening in the annuals! Bold. Seems to be the only one you need to get is the Avengers one to see who really wins. A new Darkhold? Didn’t that happen recently?
Why does ASM feel like it’s treading water? Like, what are you waiting for?
Tangential related Carnage and Spider books. No.
Miles fighting a speedster villains sounds fun. I am getting the Hobgoblin issue(s?) so I will wait and see how that story works out before committing myself to more issues.
All these miniseries! No!
The What If Carnage one-shot by Hama... MAYBE!
Not a Hulk fan, and I’m actually beginning to not like most Hulk fans I talk to. They are always unhappy.
Trade-waiting Avengers.
Lot of ongoings I am not really interested in.
Not getting the Scarlet Witch issue but I hope Loki and Wanda do start dating. That’ll be fun.
I’m gonna get Moon Knight because I’ve been enjoying it with Comixology. Wink!
I think I’m going to drop Dr. Strange because I don’t care for the art.
Star Wars! Same problems with the Hulk fans as above.
Did Planet of the Apes only get five issues.
Most of the questions posed in this post are rhetorical

Spoilers for the Wasp issue for Darkhold, I guess?
So, for Janet, the thing that caused her to go down her “dark path” and all, it was a bit of light manipulation by Kang the Conqueror, so that when Hank’s infamous slap happened, she straight up murdered him in a rage.
Sorry, but while I didn’t cheer this act on or anything, I do find framing that as the moment she broke and just went all mad and everything to be very suspect. I’m almost surprised that the same team that gave us Wanda just taking back her agency and eating Cthon gave us that.
