Cobra Kai
youtube
I heard Ralph Macchio talking about the show he was making that was a continuation of Karate Kid.  I was curious and it was on Netflix so I started watching it. Sooooo glad I did!  These times are tough and dark so I don’t feel like watching more dark, creepy shows right now. I want something fun and Cobra Kai is super fun.  It starts out a little cheesy with tons of throwbacks to the Karate Kid movies, but in like an 80′s cheesy way.  It feels intentional rather than a byproduct of bad writing or acting.  Macchio and Zabka do an awesome job in their roles as Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence, stuck in the past, right where the movie left off.  Johnny Lawrence in particular is funny because he’s so stuck in the past, it’s almost like he was stuck in a time capsule all these years.

He drives the same car, wears the same clothes, listens to the same music, and makes comments that aren’t exactly PC these days.  It’s refreshing and funny and we truly enjoy watching it at my house.  I’m in the middle of season 2 right now and I can’t wait to keep watching this one for a while.

Superstore
I guess I’m watching more TV shows than movies these days.  Just rewatched Superstore and there are just so many gems. Superstore also brings up some super relevant social issues (gun control, maternity leave, illegal immigration) while staying light and funny. I’ve also heard from friends who’ve worked in retail that some of the crazy stuff the customers do in the show totally happens in real life.  Funny and relatable and 5 seasons so far, it’s a great one to start watching if you’re looking for something to binge!

Not a movie, but I’m watching The IT Crowd and I just wanted to share how angry I am that it’s been sitting in my queue for years before I finally decided to watch it.  I can’t believe such hilarity was just sitting there!

High Fidelity
youtube
Here I am, a total audiophile, probably even more than I am a cinephile, and yet I have never seen this move.  A movie about someone who uses music (for better for worse) as a way to relate to world, as a means of communication, as a means of expression....and yet I’ve NEVER seen it.
I’m not going to say it’s officially my favorite movie or anything, but I think that anyone who’s into music will relate to a lot of the movie.
Tumblr media
I can’t seem to find an easy way to explain the story without making it sound..bad.  Rob Gordon- played by the forever cool John Cusack- owns a record shop in Chicago and is going through a tough break up.  Like the lists of songs he’s always making, he makes a list of his top 5 break ups and decides that going over them will help him understand why he has such trouble with relationships.
Be warned,if you’re looking for a rom-com that will make you smile and fill your heart with warm feelings, this is not that movie.  Rob is shallow, self-possessed, arrogant, and immature.  But that’s what the movie is about.  He has to figure out what his role has been in all these failures.  But that’s what’s awesome.  Aren’t we often so self-absorbed in our own misery and desires that we fail to see what we were doing wrong?
Tumblr media
It’s so easy to wallow in our own self-pity that we often fail to see the situation clearly.  Rob Gordon did nothing but frustrate me.  I got annoyed with his attitude.  But that’s what makes it such a great, honest film.  Maybe I’ve been a little bit primed to expect a big, sappy, emotional ending, because the end left me a little bit underwhelmed.  There was no sigh of relief or happiness, just a shrug.  Like, “Ok, let’s make this work.”  Meh.
My favorite part is definitely all the music references.  Music is an incredible tool for dealing with life.  Is it worth watching again?  Meh.  Sure.  I’m a sucker for the Cusacks and the Chicago music scene.  I’m actually really interested to read the book, now that I’ll be picturing John Cusack as Rob and Chicago instead of London.
