writing patterns tag game
Rules: list the first line of your last 10 (posted) fics and see if there's a pattern! tagged by @x-i-l-verify! thanks friend-o! Looking at these, I seem to usually start with a rather short and snappy opening line, and the majority of the time it includes a character's name as well as starting in the midst of some action. 1. Similar Differences As the ambulance left Captain Strand came up the ladder and waved a roll of caution tape. “Think if I hold your harness you can lean across the gap in the walkway and we can festoon the whole danger zone?” 2. A Matter of Who is There May would not be ashamed to admit that she spent a solid minute outside the front door debating if she would rather knock than use her key to come in. 3. Support Capacity Sue Blevins had been to an appalling number of government-mandated teambuilding events in her time, and there were a couple things she had learned. 4. Advice for (young) Captains When the shaking was over both Naomi and Crewman G’nass were buried under a pile of stuff that had been a neat rack of supplies in Cargo Bay 1 about forty seconds ago. 5. <emperor penguin defense mechanisms> Bruce had said that he would call Alfred once he knew when exactly the flight would be landing and they would be able to disembark and leave the airport, but once he realized that the time in question would overlap with when Damian’s school let out he instead arranged for a company limo to pick him up. 6. mine own Back when Stephanie was little, before her dad went off the deep end, he would take her on walks to the park some of the days her mom had to work late. 7. remembered to remember me (or: an eye to see remix) There were extenuating circumstances. 8. an eye to see things as they are “A year and a day,” she said in a voice like stones grinding together, and Bruce’s breath caught in his throat. 9. Knightfall: Near Miss Jason ended the argument by punching her. 10. Great & Terrible & Inarticulate Most men, upon waking up in the middle of the night and finding nothing in their environment to explain why, would roll over and go back to sleep. tagging: anyone who sees this and wants to do it <3

Is the quality of popular literature truly deteriorating or is this a bias?
Probably a bias. Remember Sturgeon's Law -- 90% of everything is crap. What tends to happen is that the stuff that survives is the 10%, so if you assume that, for example, all Victorian Popular Literature was like Dickens, who was a popular writer, you're ignoring the people who really were popular back then, who have been, for the most part, justly forgotten.
George W M Reynolds outsold Dickens. He was a proper Victorian Popular Author. And it is not easy to read him for pleasure now. I've tried...

the best moment of artemis fowl’s redemption arc is when he’s about to steal $280 million dollars and then his conscience kicks in and he’s like, ‘do i really need all this money?’ and then he’s like, ‘uh yeah!’ and steals it anyway

Peeta‘s panting hard as he fights the nightmares raging in his head. “No. I don‘t want to…”
I clench his hands to the point of pain. “Stay with me.”
His pupils contract to pinpoints, dilate again rapidly, and then return to something resembling normalcy. “Always,” he murmurs.
