Did you think I forgot about it? The Halloween vocaloid playlist is done!! I'll include the links in a reblog so Tumblr doesn't bury the post, there's a YouTube playlist and a Spotify one, the YouTube one being the longer one with nearly 100 songs... yeah, I got carried away lol Reminder for those who have forgotten/not in the know, this playlist starts with cute lighthearted songs about Halloween and monsters, and gets darker in tone and sound the deeper down the playlist you go

I don't want to make the post too long so I'll just include a general content warning for the songs in the playlist, and under the cut I might list all the songs and ramble a bit about what it was like to make the playlist. I hope you enjoy!^^

The playlist has been done for days, I've just been procrastinating on actually making the post until now lmao sorry! I had a lot of fun making the playlist and going through the suggestions, it also made me fall in love with some producers I hadn't paid much attention to before (shout out to all of the people who sent in Babuchan suggestions, as you can see I went down a bit of a Babuchan rabbit hole and added tons of his stuff to the playlist, same for machigerita lol)

I'll admit that one of the reasons the playlist kept getting longer was because I'd look at other creepy/scary vocaloid playlists on YouTube for inspiration, and every time I was nearly done I would write down 20 more songs to check out, which is why it took me a whole month to get this playlist done lol. I hope it was worth it! I'm very pleased with how it all turned out

There were also many songs/producers I really liked but decided not to include in the playlist, for example I found DaijoubuP, who I really like, but I didn't think it fit the vibe of the kind of Halloween playlist I wanted to make, so none of his stuff is in the playlist. Same goes for SEIKAI, his songs sound very creepy but I found the lyrics a bit too dark and I wanted to try to keep the playlist a bit more lighthearted. Maybe I'll make a more general vocahorror playlist sometime to highlight all of these producers' work! Who knows

Something else I realized because of this playlist is my standard for creepy vocaloid music might be a bit different than other people's. I got many Maretu suggestions, and I love the guy and completely understand why some of his music was suggested (such as Coin Locker Baby), but it surprised me just how much I'd see him suggested in the notes of my post or in Spotify playlists, he's never really given me the creeps even with his darker lyrics. Not judging! Just an observation I had

You'll notice that I've been using vocaloid as a bit of an umbrella term, since there are a couple of songs that use UTAU and even Synth-V voicebanks^^

hey! i was sort of reading “something to rely on” lyrics, and i remembered that you analyse some of miles, monkeys and tlsp songs. so, i just wanted to ask what are your thoughts on this song, cause i particularly think it’s about alex or some of it. anyway, other songs from cdg can be fully about alex, but barely no one talks about this one, so i thought it’d be great to discuss about it.

there’s also “adios tara tara” that i also think it’s about alex, as other songs from change the show, but that’s for another time! i also love your blog, your fanfics and song analysis, they’re always really good! 🫶

sooo first of all sorry for being this late lmao this is kinda embarrassing because this ask was sent MONTHS ago maybe almost a year ago it was so long ago i literally don't remember. i'm only just answering now BUT better late than never i guess skgshdfh

(as usual don't take this too seriously lmao this is just a silly theory, i'm in no way implying it's the truth. it's just delusion o'clock)

now, if you follow me you know what i think of coup de grace as an album - and that is, the fact that it's soooo about alex it's crazy like. bro was so angry and in love and heartbroken????? and he wrote a literal masterpiece of an album????? that's iconic if you ask me

so to no one's surprise, let's follow the usual theory - them having some sort of falling out after eycte because of miles getting serious and alex consequently chickening out, which led to Peak Gay Drama Year, also known as 2018, when they both release albums that - more or less explicitly - contain images that could easily be interpreted as references to each other. something to rely on is no exception:

"crescent moon, left in my drive / all too soon, you made your point"

the reference to the moon creates a pattern, since the semantic field of astral entities is also present in songs such as killing the joke, with "interstellar, dressed in leather, drinking bitter boy" - which as we all know is one of miles' most direct lines when it comes to referencing alex, and it can easily be linked to am's own space-themed album, which miles definitely got to listen before its official release date.

opening the song with a reference to the moon could be a way of @ a certain someone, letting him know that yes, this song *is* in fact about him, if he didn't get the other billion hints in the whole album. (however, for the sake of keeping it vague, i won't be referring to him directly but rather to a ~mysterious person~) (i'm sure you get my point tho *wink wink*) [gunshots]

mentioning the moon could also be a way of referencing the ever-present theme of nighttime encounters in the entirety of mk/am/tlsp's discography: sometimes those encounters are described as fun, sometimes they mean trouble; sometimes, they leave the people involved with a sense of guilt and/or shame, on which we'll come back later and which often leads to bad decisions ("all too soon, you made your point"). in this particular case, the first image that comes to my mind is someone leaving sneakily after a (series of) one-night stands, with the song obviously being from the pov of the person being left, who also gives us a reason why they think the other person left:

"keeping off the radar, how does that make you feel? / keeping it clean, through all the things you wanted me to be / out of touch, with all the rumors i keep hearing of you / keeping off the radar, how does that make you feel?"

this person doesn't seem to want other people to know about their affair, and that's why they keep it secret; it seems that they want miles to be something he's not, or something he can't be - or maybe they ask all these things of themselves, which would maybe make it easier for them to accept the relationship going public. this person wants to keep it neat and clean, picture-perfect and fitting to everything everyone expects from them; but as much as they try to stay lowkey and not attract attention, the narrator informs us that no matter how much this person tries to hide, there's still rumors going around about them, as an individual as well as their relationship(s) with other people, most likely with the narrator too.

"all aboard the guilt train / last call before we leave / last call before we learn to love / the last call before we leave"

the line referring to guilt is insanely queer-coded and i will die on this hill because it just SCREAMS internalised homophobia, with which the other person might be struggling. it wouldn't make sense otherwise - because what would that person feel guilty about, if it were a straight-passing relationship? unless it was a cheating situation, of course... but it could be a cheating situation AND also a queer one, with this person being in another (het) relationship while having a same-sex lover (the narrator), which would give that line a double explanation. also every time i listen to this song i just can't help but think about 'all aboard the kane train' WHAT WHO SAID THAT

however, the narrator tells us that this is the "last call before we leave" - meaning, he's giving this person an ultimatum to make up their mind and decide if they want to be with him for real or not, since the latter possibility would result in him leaving - not necessarily for good, but... just trying to get over that person once and for all. at the same time, though, it's also the "last call before we learn to love" - which is incredibly soft imo, because it's him still putting trust and hope into that person and a positive decision on their part. he believes they will eventually choose to be with him, he hopes for it and trusts the other person to make the right decision, which would lead to them being together and learning how to love each other without limits nor second-guesses. the repetition of the leaving line could also be seen as a way for him to give it a new meaning compared to the first one: if they ended up together, they could leave that world based on nasty rumors and appearances, ignoring them all to just be happy together. because, after all, miles declares it openly:

"you're all that i wanted / all that i need / you're all that i wanted / you're all that i need"

i mean. does this even need an explanation. bro is down BAD

"something to rely on / something to get high on / i don't want to beg or steal, i don't want to borrow hearts / i just want to make it real / something to rely on / the making of a mystery, wishing on a falling star / i don't want to let this sadness rule my heart / your actions from the start / in spite of me insightfully inviting me to fall apart"

i left the chorus last because imo it captures perfectly the whole vibe of the song and what i think is miles' outlook on life in general: the narrator wants something stable and secure, an established relationship with the other person; he doesn't want to have to beg and argue and make it more complicated than it probably already is, he doesn't want to be a pastime or just some lover. he wants something thrilling and intense, almost addictive - but most importantly, he wants something real. this complicated situation with the other person is making them both suffer, and the other person's behaviour doesn't make it any easier; but in spite of everything, and in spite of his sense of self-preservation, he still finds himself unable and unwilling to resist them, to let them go for good. and no matter how self-destructive this might be, he doesn't want to be ruled by negative emotions; he's already fallen for them, too deep to even consider letting them go. he just keeps falling, and yeah, the outcome of their situationship might still be a mystery, but he chooses to be hopeful - "wishing on a falling star", bringing the song to a circular end by mentioning other astral entities that inevitably remind us of the "crescent moon" that opens the song. which also evokes the idea of circularity that is typical of situationships like the one described here, where the moment he seems to have made up his mind (or maybe the other person finally did?) it's like rinse and repeat, and once again they're back to square one.

Initial Thoughts

The night this was released, I was having some sudden internet issues and was slightly panicking about being able to work the next day so I was admittedly a little stressed by the time I got to listen even though I stayed up specifically for it.

Usually I would listen to it first on Spotify before watching the music video but I was able to get the mv to load first for some reason. My first impression on the song itself was actually a little bit of confusion as to how long the track actually would be given all the 'non-song' space in the mv.

When I did finally get Spotify to work, I definitely thought it was too short but I was so excited that I was vibing with it as much as I did. V's solo work is very hit or miss for me, with most of LayoVer being a miss. I don't think the album was bad, I just had a hard time with it since none of the tracks really appeal to me. But Fri(end)s? I liked on the first few listens. Which is kinda funny because I was actually wondering pretty early on if Fri(end)s would work as part of LayoVer...more on that later in this post.

I still think the song is too short. I realize that's the trend these days as it's more of a marketing tactic but that doesn't mean I have to like the trend. Especially with the extremely clear folding of the song into two parts, it's pretty obvious to even some casual listeners that there's something missing. Not enough to make it a bad song but it just feels slightly unfinished.

Performance

If you haven't already watched the Live Film, I highly recommend it.

I know it's kinda a flex in music communities to value live versions over studio releases but I rarely fall into that camp. (I honestly think it has something to do with a sensory issue I have and extra noise that is often present in such recordings...anyway back to V). This performance is so great! It perfectly embodies both Tae's personality and the energy needed for a song like this. I honestly just felt so good listening to him sing this because he did it in the exact same way I do when I sing along to music; adding extra little rifs and bits just for the fun of it and avoiding the typical notes that all of the members leave out of most performances.

I'm not qualified to comment on the musical technique needed for this song but there are definitely some fun challenges that make for a satisfying singalong once you've nailed them!

If you haven't listened to the complete album in a while, here's a link. Always a good idea to give an album a complete top-to-bottom listen every once in a while, especially this one with how Tae agonized over track sequence of his solo work as mentioned during Festa 2022.

So, if you just list the key words of the lyrical themes and musical elements of both Fri(end)s and LayoVer, you'd think they'd be an easy match but the more I investigated, the less I think so.

First, I'm not really a music researcher when it comes to credits or following specific contributors but from what I can tell, there weren't any of the same individuals listed between the two projects except Tae himself. Which honestly surprised me.

Just going off of memory, I thought it'd fit in smoothly either before or after Slow Dancing but after trying it out, it just doesn't land for me. It absolutely deserves to be its own single and I'd initially wondered if it had been ripped out of the album as the track to tide us over during this chunk of ms but I really don't feel that way at all.

It honestly reminds me a little of how JK released 3D as a separate track. That song (as much as I don't love it) does stand on its own without the support of an album. Maybe Fri(end)s was one of the other songs Tae found during his search for LayoVer but that team didn't have enough material for a cohesive album? He didn't want to lose it so kept it as a single to release later.

hi raven :D! I think you've spoken about twst and languages in their world, so I was wondering if you've ever had a discussion about the possibility of a "merfolk language"? obviously they can speak the universal language of the twst world, but do you think they could have a native language too, consisting of something more adapted to living under the sea and thus more inhuman (clicks, growls, etc)? like one that maybe humans can't even hear because human ears have a limit on what they can hear or something like that? I think it's a fun little headcanon but maybe it's just because I am the type to enjoy blatant inhuman traits in inhuman characters 👉👈 (like azul still being able to barf up ink as a human, and the tweels still have a pharyngeal jaw even after taking their human pills)

I don’t think we’ve considered a language for merpeople in detail before?? 🤔 It’s a weird grey area (the same as with any theoretical“beastman” languages) since the race is half human and half animal; Animal Languages already exists as their own separate entity, and then we have the various languages of other groups (we learn in Fairy Gala: If that smaller fairies communicate in sounds that resemble jingling bells, people in the City of Flowers speak “French” like Rook does, Epel’s hometown appears to speak its own language that his classmates find difficult to understand, etc). I wonder if this would mean that a merpeople language would be a marriage of an animal language and a human language, or if it would be less of a whole new language and more of a dialect which combines mannerisms and grammatical rules from both sources???

I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned or written about “Mermish” in some of my own fics! I usually describe it as very flowy and lyrical, like the words just spill into each other and you don’t know when one word ends and when another starts. Basically, it’s less like speaking and more like music. This version of the language is ingrained in siren lore (you know, singing prettily to lure sailors to their doom 😂) rather than the practical lore (ie the more animalistic sounds to navigate the dark, treacherous waters of the deep), but I enjoy both interpretations and find them equally as valid! I do think that the language would probably be audible to a human though how else would their prey be drawn in???. Humans don’t have the most sensitive hearing ever, but you’d be surprised just how much our ears can sense!

There hasn’t been any indication in the lore (at least as far as I can tell) of there being a whole other language or dialect specifically for merpeople, so the idea is just speculation. I’d think if there were to be any proof of this, then we’d probably hear Azul talk about how beneficial it is to know many languages, as this could help his business flourish. Even a mention from Floyd would work, as he does mention (again, during Beans Day) that he, Jade, and Azul went to a month-long camp on land to learn about life in the world above. There wasn’t a mention of having to pick up on a new language (and a month isn’t long enough to become conversational anyway). In any case, very few merpeople are said to come to the surface (for work, for schooling, etc), so it seems unlikely to me that underwater schools would make the theoretical “common tongue” of Twisted Wonderland an educational requirement for young merkids. I’d think the merkids would have to actively seek out and study the “common tongue” as a second language if they plan to pursue a career on land. But already knowing the language cannot be a prerequisite for the camp, since it is said the program was eager to accept the Octatrio (which makes it sound like getting into it is very easy to do).

So I guess my line of thinking is… If merchildren were required to learn the common tongue, it makes sense why the training camp didn’t include language. However, this doesn’t make much sense to begin with because why have that linguistic curriculum if it’s assumed most merpeople won’t engage with the world of land? In the opposite scenario (in which merchildren aren’t required to learn the common tongue), why wouldn’t there be curriculum on language in the camp? Already knowing the common tongue doesn’t seem to be requirement for the camp, since the lore makes it sound like the camp is desperate to take people in (due to most merpeople not having an interest in living/studying/working on land).

Let me tell you, trying to figure out half human, half fish anatomy and physiology is not how I thought I’d be using my brain cells 😂

searching for a song by clicking random on a lyric website. probably not gonna find what i'm looking for but i'm gonna post what i find, listen to, and like here:

moondance just happened to be the first song i got on the roulette wheel, and i can't say i was disappointed. has really nice, understated vocals with an impressive range, and i really like the guitar's stellar blend of simplicity and complexity. wonderful song, couldn't have asked for a better first shot

more than you know seems to be pretty standard for instrumental jazz of the era. definitely solid and enjoyable, but not life changing

stairway to the stars... it feels as if the universe read what i just wrote about more than you know and thought, "heh, i'll show you some fucking jazz, bud". i'm not sure i'm aware of any words in any language to describe how this makes me feel but it's definitely an overall positive one. definitely nostalgic, a bit like if sonder was distilled into a song. overall lovely, i could see this making me cry very easily if i were in the right headspace

shake rattle & roll, can't say i went into this expecting early french rock but i can't say i'm exactly surprised by what i heard either. pretty good by the standards of rock at the time, has a better beat than a lot of what i've heard from the era (though to be fair, a lot of what i'm mentally comparing it to were those drummers that just went thunk thunk in a consistent 4/4 like a less interesting sounding heartbeat)

call me ishmael, by corm. honestly the first one i can say that didn't properly link on the site but i went out of my way to search up anyways, purely because of the band name. corm, what a lovely word, never heard it before now. the song is pretty good for what it is, a lot of songs like this have rather insufferable vocalists but i found this one listenable albeit not exactly intelligible. a lot like green day, and it leaves a similarly vaguely positive impression of quality much like a green day song. nothing special, but definitely worth listening to. i find there's a lot to appreciate in the average if it's well constructed

i concentrate on you is giving me the distinct impression that the best music i'm gonna come across tonight is gonna be jazz. frankly i really should listen to more of it, given my love for genres i'd consider inspired by it like prog and early rap. very good song, would recommend.

weary blues absolutely reeks of 1920s americana in the best way possible. it's got a certain bouncy and bubbly quality to it that i imagine would lend itself perfectly to animation of the era, and is overall just a fun listen

one last one for the night, i'll probably add to this when the mood strikes again. i'll admit i was skeptical about praise ye jah at first since reggae isn't exactly my favorite genre, but i'd like to consider myself open minded and i will say that i was pleasantly surprised overall. the beat is pretty damn good, and i'd personally consider that one of the most important parts of a song. i won't say i especially like the vocals, but i don't dislike them either, and honestly in my experience it's not exactly uncommon for me to absolutely hate the vocals in a reggae song, so that's probably a glowing recommendation coming from me. overall, pretty good!

In that order, Player once again having to explain fan content, but Wild probably being touched/floored people care for him enough as to make songs about his journey, cause Time he can understand but him?

Or he remembers Player used to hum or sing Into The Wild before and after difficult situations or at least non specific lyrics as a way of comfort to his entire situation, it's a touching but jolly song, kind of like a shanty or some of those old folk songs, so it probably helped lift his spirits right up whenever he felt down, or at least offer a measure of comfort.

Something something, Player who has amazing voice control and an Ado/Jane Doe from Ride the Cyclone range (like, lady goes so hard, those high notes are implied to be the characters screams and she does it while suspended, girl goes incredibly hard), like the kind of person who can do voice mimicry really well because maybe they're a voice actor/singer or reach really high notes or those low, guttural growled out sounds you wouldn't expect to come out of a human throat and they're absolutely a gremlin about it, just able to make those high screams and roars or pure unadulterated rage on command. Imitating anyone they can feasibly get away with for the kicks with maybe Wind or Wild throwing suggestions into the ring, or mimicking Legend's voice back at him when he's being a tsundere. Getting into growling contests with Wolfie and actually surprising the Chain that they actually sound wolf like, things like that.

It's all fun and laughs until one day the Chain needs a distraction to maybe ambush a monster or Yiga camp, Player goes "I got this boys", goes perch on a tree or something, takes a deep breath and either just, screams loud enough to wake the dead or sound like a Poe or Redead, or somehow mimicks a lynel's roar or Volvagia's roar, and makes both the monster camp occupants AND the Chain jump. Player continues doing so during the battle to cause confusion (maybe imitating Dink out of spite for maximum stun damage if he's in the area), and then just cackles themselves like a maniac after it's over only to start coughing, their throat will probably be sore for a while afterwards but honestly? Absolutely worth it, can they do it again?

... Now I'm thinking about Cadence of Hyrule Link joining the Chain for some reason, and him and Player getting along purely because he already dealt with a similar deal so he's probably the least suspicious of the Link's when they say they're from another world, that or because of Players vocal range they bond over music tastes and the intricacies of it because his game is all about music. That or a Player that either has an Azura/Shigure from Fire Emblem Fates deal going on, or an Utah Utah no Mi deal.

Eh, maybe I'll elaborate it on another ask, kind of sleep deprived and have coursework to do.

I can see Wild being flattered about the songs! As he probably struggles with the idea that he wasn't able to stop the calamity 100 years before but these songs about him being strong and such, it helps him in a way, to know that people still think well of him even after he "failed."

Time is mixed in a sense because, while he's heard songs, books, and theatrics of his journey never to this depth, not about every second of his journey so while he tries to keep indifferent it makes him a little self-conscious that people know about his story in this depth, even with Player's reassurances.

Mentioning musicals has gotten me listening to them in the background- Okay but with the imitation thing, instead of Player screaming like a redead they imitate Kogha's voice to get the yiga to piss off.

Oh hi!!? It’s always a bit of a surprise to get any likes on my Horrible Histories movie posts, I sorta send them into the void for self satisfaction😆, but it was even more surprising when your username popped up! To tell you the truth, I actually have a whole playlist of songs for Atti and Orla [I call it "Of Love and Sundials" because I amuse myself 😅]. Of course, they have a lot of wonderful canonical songs already (including a (sort of?) love song. That second verse and also the Latin translation makes me think it's a love song, but I suppose it's up to interpretation). Anyway... unfortunately those songs are not available to listen to in my country or to purchase internationally (believe me I've looked into it) which has been such a frustration when the songs get stuck in my head. (True pain is running around humming "something something sharing" for two weeks at time with no respite 😂). My sister and I actually once physically typed out all the lyrics to one of the songs by pausing the actual movie over and over with subtitles, and I also translated part of Atti's part of "Orla Alone" into the original Latin when I super bored once (my teachers would be so thrilled to know how I was utilizing my many years of "serious" Latin knowledge 😂). But mostly, I just made a playlist of non-Horrible Histories songs (and I got really, really attached to song "Lost in The Woods" from Frozen 2) as a way to fill the void. Lil Yachty - the BLACK seminole.: i still don't fully know how to feel about this album. the critical community seems to be rejecting it, saying that it's a shame to see so many rappers try to "escape" their own genre. i think there's truth to that, but i also think this is just such a wild left turn of an album that it doesn't only feel like an escape attempt, and i think it's a little unfair to yachty to treat it as such. there's some decent material on here! and this opening track specifically just has such a great vibe, even if it is derivative

Snot - Snooze Button: this band/vocalist are revered on r/numetal but i've yet to really get into them. upon hearing this song, though, i was sold. nu metal that's properly pissed off about encroachment upon workers' rights? like ya even gotta ask

Chuck Berry - Roll Over Beethoven: did i make a post about this? i don't think i did. but i didn't save the draft either. here's the thing: the beatles covered this on one of their early albums. and it was SHIT. it's such a raucous classic rock banger, written and performed by a legend, and after hearing the terrible cover it makes me appreciate the original that much more

Chapter 1: Through the Fire and Wind

Summary: On the planet of Tir Asleen, on the outskirts of Union's hegemonic benevolence, best friends Kit Tanthalos and Jade Claymore are staring down an uncertain future - and a decision that will change their lives forever.

[This is an old chapter, I'm reposting it here for archival purposes!]

I wanted to repost links to my old chapters as I keep working on the next one, partly as a break/distraction and partly because if I'm going to keep a tumblr for this project I feel I should be complete about it. So here's a link for the first chapter! In an attempt to give these a little more purpose I'm also gonna talk a tiny bit about the process of writing it.

As I think I said elsewhere, I basically started this fic like I was possessed; I outlined the broad strokes and then wrote this chapter in (I'm pretty sure) one fell swoop of like 4 hours far too late at night. It was fairly easy to write because it's mostly a rework of ep. 1 of Willow; this is an adaptation that departs eventually from its source material, not a 100% original fic, and at the start I was playing with how closely I could stick to the original plot beats and dialogue of the show as I found my feet.

Also, I just love that we meet Kit and Jade swordfighting, and making them have a mech practice/paintball fight felt like a great way to establish the world and some of the fantasy-analogues very, very quickly. It also helps me point up one of the fun things about this kind of mech fiction for people who might not be as familiar: in Lancer, pilots (players) modify their mechs extensively, so each giant robot becomes a sort of expression of their personality/approach to fighting or life. So we have Kit's mech, Freedom, which is fast, agile, and expends huge amounts of power in flashy ways, and Jade's, Duty, which is slower, more heavily armored, carefully managed. I hope it helps set expectations for what readers will see in the future!

This is (I think) about the only chapter where I do the fanfic thing of "We've all seen Willow, right? I don't have to totally rewrite that scene in the banquet? Cool." :P

One thing that did surprise me about this chapter - and emerged organically as I wrote - was how much more high-intensity the confrontation between Kit and Jade became at the end. I'm not sure where that came from, exactly, though I think part of it is the idea that in a far-future world with very advanced surveillance technology, Kit's plan is way less likely to actually work for her. So Jade's not only in conflict with her over ideas (should she do this) but because she's concerned for Kit's actual safety.

The Oh Hellos song that corresponds with this chapter is On the Mountain Tall. At the start of this project I was pulling on the songs more for lyric inspiration than anything else, but the song does touch on things that are relevant to the chapter: the intertwining of love and fear, and the sense that something unstoppable has been set in motion. It's the start of the cycle, after all... In hindsight, I'm also very happy that the song hints that some of the drama/violence/oppression happening now is a result of the past:

(Though fun fact: I realized only later that I'd 100% misheard the lyric in the title, and it should be "Though the fire and wind." Oh well.)

overall, i was hooked INSTANTLY- i love your characterisation, especially for jeremy 1.0, and the repurposing of lyrics to a repeated dialogue was one of my favourite bits (also!!! your rewriting of lyrics to fit the fic and to serve as a chapter summary?? that was SO clever i loved guessing the song they came from and humming them before i started the new chapter….)

before you mentioned TGWDLM, i got the vibes - the whole “everyone you know is slowly being infected with this Thing” was written so legitimately scary to me. like it was Tense. turn a corner and yup, they got squipped. oh so did your other classmate. yep, and them too. i’m a big fan of TGWDLM, and i LOVED the apocalypse feel in OOIM; like yeah, they’re trying to stop the Horror, but to do that they also have to Survive, and the odds of that happening aren’t looking too good either. literally every chapter i was screaming JEREMY!!! SQUEREMY!!!!! GO CHECK ON MICHAEL!!! PLEASE!!!!

(all the talk of squeremy being michael’s meat shield…….. houuuuh. i knew something had to be coming but it still HURT!!!)

i just think that this fic was done INCREDIBLY well. i enjoyed it so so so much!!! (the ending i cried a little at!!) thank you for writing it!!!

Thank you! I wouldn't mind writing Jeremy 1.0 sometime (or Christine, who is fun to write) but the opportunity hasn't come up. I kind of sandwiched in the "talking to themself" chapter because I wanted a little reminder of their roots. They can still do a great impression of both Jeremy and the SQUIP if anyone asks. The only person they've asked has said no. :( :'(

I've been surprised at the great reaction to those lyric changes. They're fun but I know I came up with them on a whim at the last second, so it's nice seeing folks enjoy them.

I started rereading that chapter today, and I think your own writing will go through a cycle of "this is brilliant" -> "i still love this" -> "oh no it's cringe!!" -> don't look at it for a year -> "this is brilliant" Sadly, that chapter is at the cringe stage for me right now. I feel like the pacing was all over the place. But it was supposed to be a single date, and Michael is the one who made it a multi-scene production.

In my writing drafts, I have a running tally of who and who isn't SQUIPped and whether this is common knowledge yet or not lol.

😂 Sadly a pretty un-Jeremy-ish thing for them to do, to ignore Michael that long (if only because of their history making that so touchy).

I have an open offer for whenever I haven't updated the fic in 2 months that, if you want to, you can message me for plot spoilers. At some point I was going to just post the plot summary and leave it as a deadfic (because I always hoped authors would do just that, if the fic would never be finished anyway)... Yet, 4 or 5 years later, here we are. I'll write more at some point. Hard to tell when that point will be though. I wrote like 40k in a month and then the rest has been in random bits and pieces since then.

How many words have you written this year? 537,776

How many works did you publish this year? 143

What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)? maybe "It wont be the same when my favorite person leaves" but idk... I worked REALLY hard on that fic and it was really cathartic to see an idea that I have been plagued with for months finally come to fruition in a way that I really enjoyed I think. The first version of that fic I wrote was really discouraging because I really hated it but I like the version I posted. Also "Death, suits you dear sir" that one was just really enjoyable to write and I enjoyed the process of it. I think I would've wanted it to be a little scarier but I like the tone I put and I like how I wrote it. I can say I'm proud of that one. Lastly "I can't escape my shadow" is very near and dear to my heart, it's reminiscent of my old writing and It was really fun to write more horror for the first time in however long.

What work of yours has the most hits? "I want a nice soft place to land I want to lie down forever" which makes sense since its one of my owl house fanfics and thats a pretty popular fandom. But it also really surprises me that it's my most popular fic this year bc like... I really hated that fic when I wrote it like, I had the idea in my head and it didn't come out the way I wanted it to at all. The words fought me and I was SO unhappy with it and I still reckon I could do it better. But it's my most popular fic this year I guess.

What work of yours got more feedback than you expected? Ok so there might be a lot of recent fics bc like I wrote a lot this year but honestly? "Words I don't say" I did not expect a lot of feedback and it was a little bit of a shot in the dark being the first fic I wrote for that campaign. I think I'm noticing a pattern of the ones that I am insecure about are usually received the best

What work took you the longest to write? The unfinished halloween fic anyway probably "A glimpse in time" it's my longest fic this year and I'm pretty sure it took me a REALLY long time tbh.

I have literally no idea tbh but I really like "Here's a health to the company" that one's just a really nice fic, I might add a bonus to it sometimes this year where I add ashe into it which is what I originally wanted to do when I wrote it but I didn't know anything about Ashe enough to be able to write him. But like I had and have an idea of what I could do for him in that 5+1 situation.

From "I cry hard because I have died, and you're alive" I'm actually surprised I wrote that in 2022... just barely but it I thought for sure it was gonna be 2021 anyway that line has always stuck out to me I think. There are probably better lines and stuff I've written recently but that one just sticks out to me, I think it's really cool.

30. Biggest surprise while writing this year? I think just mostly all the fics I managed to write, all the support I've had and I think the friends that I have made. It's really just... shocking to me that people enjoy my fics, a lot of people comment about seeing me upload in their inbox implying that they have notifications on for me and that's just... really wild to me. I can't really comprehend the support and the love people have for my writing, it feels unreal I think. I don't understand it at all haha, I'm just here writing silly things and people actually like it.

I think also my biggest surprise is my growth and how much Jrwi put me in a chokehold haha I didn't expect to write this much this year and I think I'm really happy with where I am with my writing. This year has been amazing and I'm so proud of myself for everything I've done and I'm so glad to have met a ton of amazing people in this fandom and to actually interact and join the community in whatever way I can.

Side note: I'm actually really proud of myself for actually like trying to put myself out there a little more. I hate making fandom posts because it makes me really nervous, but I think that I've gotten over that fear and I've tried to interact more with some people. I've made some great friends and some great mutuals and I'm really happy with that. It's been an amazing year so thank you all.

I’ve got one more character portrait I wanted to get out of my system before I need to work on other projects, so here’s Derek for ya! I honestly wasn’t sure how Sourwolf was going to turn out, but he actually exceeded my expectations. He was thankfully easier to draw than I thought he would be (the grumpy characters I do draw are hard AF to get right), so he was a breath of fresh air. I could definitely get used to drawing him more (and maybe doing some really cool things with his eyes). Also, swooning over that facial hair and the shadows, and this general colour palette was really great to work with. You can view Derek as part of the work Snapshots of Time on AO3. Thinking about maybe working on Scott or Lydia next, but we’ll see!

What were the words that you said to me that made me feel so special now? Here’s my @sterekweek-2022 contribution for the “Sing Me A Song” prompt! This art piece went in its own direction, and I just followed the path it took me. Lyrics are based on Finch’s song, “Stay With Me.” You can also view Makes Me Feel Alive on AO3.     Folks who are familiar with my work know I live for anything inspired by songs and lyrics, so I obviously had to see what I could come up with for Sterek. Thankfully, I have a gazillion songs and lyrics that work so well for them! :D Drawing an almost kiss scene was fun since there’s something raw and emotional about this moment Derek and Stiles are about to share. I loved drawing Derek’s leather jacket, and Stiles’ plaid button-ups have been teaching me new ways to work with patterns and simple clothing. And the way the mixed media spread ended up really embraces the October and spooky feels. I may have another Sterek surprise for ya for Halloween, so stay tuned!

Well, it looks like I can finally share this, after not being able to say anything for...I don’t know for how long?! Anyway, here’s what I made for @hd-wireless this year, which is my first Drarry fest piece of the year so far! Drarry has been with me through and through for a long time, and if you were to look at my Drarry playlist, Three Days Grace’s “I Hate Everything About You” is 10000% in there. I’ve loved this song for ages, and it sums up Harry and Draco’s relationship so well, it’s not even funny. I am so glad @sunflower-swan prompted this song so I could snatch it right up! My #1 post of 2022

Since it’s spooky season, this has a perfect time to delve deeper into more Teen Wolf and lore. So far, it’s been really fun to geek out over monsters, mythology and all things supernatural again. To do that (for a fandom that’s still newish to me) has helped me loosen up my expectations, look forward to trying new things, and I’ve been slowly getting back on track to finish up current art and fic WIPs. I guess this was the breath of fresh air I needed get out of that corner of roadblocks and feeling stuck. It seems to be working! I’m still getting my feet wet with Sterek (a ship I didn’t know I needed and one I adore sooo much). So, here’s a little something for @averysterekfall! The first time they had seen him on stage they were fascinated, more than expected. Until that day they had not thought much of idols despite working with them. Then again, it is part of their job so there was not much to think about. In fact, they saw them all more as co–workers if anything.

Everytime they walked on campus they did not understand the big fuss some students made over the idols. In fact, when hearing some names they could only roll their eyes. Oh if they even knew about some of those guys, what they truly are like. Not as ‘knightley’ or ‘charming’ as they thought. Especially some of the female students. And yet they had been approached out of nowhere by a group of girls. Anyone approaching them would have been a surprise. Yet what had been even more shocking back then was that the girls had not asked for help for assignments or anything like that, no. Instead one of them said:

“It's Anja, right? You're free, aren't you?”

When eating their lunch ‘Anja’ had nearly dropped it, staring at the trio of girls in disbelief. Free? Them? “Uh… That de–”

“You're free almost any weekend! Well, we need one more person to use those tickets for that idol concert! Our beloved Eden will perform but we can't throw away that fourth ticket! So you are joining us!”

“Wha– I but… I–”

Yet one of the girls had already slammed that ticket on the table and stomped off after saying: “We meet three hours before the concert starts! Don't be late!”

They weren't given a choice, they had to accept it. At first they wondered who to give it to but no one came to mind, so they had to go. Even if they could care less about idol performances… Great… But there was no way out now. They had to go, didn't they? Eden groupies are something else sometimes… 

So basically they had been dragged right then and there, expecting to just stare with a blank face. And they did for the most part, just watching one performance after the other pass. Some songs were better than the others, some stuck and others they forgot in an instance. The faces of said idols? Honestly, it slipped their mind. They had not paid much attention to most and were anything but thrilled. Besides, not like all of it had been easy to hear anyway! Given how much screaming and shouting they heard from all those fans. Even the trio right next to them could barely hold their breath. Well, they were having fun at least so Anja was not going to say anything about it.

Well, just when they thought they could maybe sneak away one of the three had grabbed them out of nowhere and forced them to face the stage yet again. “Look look! Here they are!” One of the girls shouted, lost before it had even started. Ah… So it was Eden’s turn. They had no strong feelings towards… Most of the members. Saegusa was a different story but he was a… League of his own, to put it lightly. Something was just unsettling about him and a performance would not really change it for them to be completely honest. Yet they had not been paying attention to him anyway, not at the time at least. No, their attention was on someone entirely different. And they had no idea why it had fascinated them at the time, what it was exactly. The song had not been something they had been unfamiliar with, having heard it so many times before. The melody familiar, the lyrics something they were able to follow along with ease. Even if they did not understand it word for word, they could at least hum along. But they were honestly too occupied to do that. Why? Because of him,

Up until this point they had not paid too much attention to him if any at all. They knew who he was, no problem whatsoever, and yet he wasn’t too outstanding to them. But something captivated them. Seeing him on stage, perform, taking one step after the other. They didn’t know why but he had captivated them. Was it because they could feel it, how he was giving it his all right then and there? Was that why? Them feeling how he was just giving it his entire energy, putting it his all into this performance. It was easy to tell and yet it made it all the more fascinating to them. Or was it just that? Either way, the view may as well have been a whole 180… Their view on Jun Sazanami.

It had been then where Ann themself started to notice Sazanami way more often. While they probably would have just walked past him without a care in the world nowadays… They were watching, at least taking a glimpse before leaving. Maybe a small wave, as a co–worker would or a greeting when close enough, then taking their leave to take care of their business. It was nothing more nor anything deeper than that. At most they probably had developed some admiration. After all, having at least heard of an idol’s schedule it was certainly some hard piece of work. No, more than that. They had seen it a few times… Or rather smelled when some idols had entered their office after practice, being all sweaty and smelly. They were in a rush so they paid no mind to it. They just know that their mother would have thrown a fit at that smell, it was rather reminding them of that. 

Regardless, they had maybe a barebone basic idea. Idol life isn’t easy and yet seeing someone pull through like this, even if they only had a glimpse… It was a job in the end, wasn’t it? That is what they thought at the very least and seeing someone put their all into it… It was something else, somewhat heartwarming. Or maybe they were sympathizing? With the idea at least. Hah, it was complicated, more than that. The only fact they had was that Sazanami captivated them in some way. It was something what just made them want to cheer him on right on the sidelines and assist him in some way. It was hard to put into words. Yet was that even needed? He came off as someone who aspired to be someone during the performance, all they needed to know. Maybe this would prove to be a time to invest in some of the idol merch— Ah no, wouldn’t CDs be more beneficial in this regard? He wasn’t some character, he was… An artist? Was that the fitting word? Hmm… Ah, they will find their word for it soon enough.

And yet, that mentality had them also a little peeved whenever hearing something in passing. It was usually something about one of the idols, how the people were talking about them, the girls especially. In fact, the trip Ann had been with at that concert… Oh the aftermath they had to hear from their lips, it was a pain.

“So, you have your eyes on Jun–Sama?”

“We compliment you for your taste yet he would pick me~”

“You!? Weren’t you after Nagisa–Sama!?”

“I recall you fawning over Hiyori–Sama!”

“If you two behave like this, none of Eden would even consider us for the ideal date.”

“Oh shut up! At least we don’t have a glasses fetish!”

“Glasses fetish!? Ibara–Sama is more than his glasses I will let you know!”

Yeah, they had just been fighting about one thing… Who dates whom. And it made them groan. Were they being serious? Was that all the three had to say? Nothing about the music, the lyrics maybe? The performance!? Was this just a ‘Oh Eden–Sama looked so graceful on stage we were melting that time’ conversation? W… Was this really…

Hah, why was it bothering them anyway? None of their business in the end. No need to have it rub them the wrong way, even if they just didn’t understand it. That was all, they didn’t really get it. 

“Anyway! You eyeing Jun–Sama—”

“His voice. I like it.” Was their only response to this. “Nothing more.”

“Nothing more? You sure? You were eyeing him pretty–”

“Yeah. Just his voice.”  Well, yes and no. They didn’t want to get into the details for some reason. And back then they were still collecting their thoughts to be honest. At home they had gotten a clear mind to be honest. So it was not as if they could have given a better answer anyway. 

Hah, no. No need to think of it like that. They just didn’t get it, the yearning for someone you didn’t know. They had assumed such a thing, them starting to yearn for Sazanami. But it was nothing like that. They didn’t know him and it was unlikely that they would get to know him anyway. So why bother? Reaching out for someone who was out of reach for you was pointless, wasn’t it? Yeah. Such a romance the trio was hoping for was only one found in novels. That or an extremely lucky romance, an exception, not the norm.

It was best to just keep supporting him from afar. That’s all Sazanami should be to them anyway, an artist and a hard worker. Someone to look up to, but nothing more. There was a distance between them, a distance lasting for probably a lifetime. So they would not even dream of getting into pointless daydreams… They are only going to be a supporter, a fan, a coworker if lucky. Nothing more. They will never be more than that anyway.
