September Challenge 2022– Days 3 & 4
It was around this point when I decided I’d go for a nautical theme for the first week of the month, just to help me keep things consistent. A lot of this stuff has been bubbling around in my head for a year or more though, so really any chance at a theme is more coincidence than anything else. Again though, if you wanna check out the other ~15 days of the challenge I’ve finished so far, you can find them daily on my Patreon!

Quill’s Plasma Arc
4th-level Evocation
Casting Time: Action
Range: 60 ft., 20 ft. line
Components: V, S
Duration: Instantaneous
Description: Choose exactly two creatures you can see within range. The targeted creatures must be within 20 feet of each other and have line of effect to each other. One target becomes charged with lightning and the other with acid, taking 8d4 damage of the respective type of damage. A creature that succeeds on a Constitution saving throw takes half damage. If neither creature is resistant or immune to the type of damage they took, the energy is then discharged in an arc between the targeted creatures, ionizing the air between them into plasma. They and each other creature in a line between them must make Dexterity saving throws or take 6d4 fire damage. Creatures that succeed take half damage.
At Higher Levels: When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 5th level or higher, the acid, lightning, and fire damage increase by 1d4 each for each slot level above 4th.
Appropriate For: Artificer, Sorcerer, Warlock, Wizard

If these past few sessions have shown me anything it’s that Elithiel should stick with the party instead of running off alone to do dumb shit
Mechanically she’s a support build/technically the party’s healer, she’s basically the buff dispenser of the group (bardic inspo, mantle of inspiration which gives up to 5 people 8 temp HP and lets them move as a reaction w/o taking opportunity attacks, bless, calm emotions, countercharm, dispel magic, lesser resto)
And when she isn’t there to drop d8s and healing words, everyone gets totally destroyed by evil crabs
Plus she can’t hit very hard and she’s absolutely awful at saving throws other than dex/cha (when the fuck would I need cha saves)

Magnetic Shield
4th-level abjuration, quadratic (Artificer, Cleric, Druid, Paladin, Sorcerer, Wizard)
Casting Time: 1 action Range: 120 feet Components: V, S, M (two magnets) Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute
You conjure a wall of magnetic force within range. You can make the wall up to 60 feet long, 20 feet high, and 1 foot thick, or a ringed wall up to 20 feet in diameter, 20 feet high, and 1 foot thick. The wall is semitransparent, its ripples causing distortions that impose disadvantage on attacks passing through it from either side.
A creature in the area of the wall when it appears must make a Strength saving throw. On a failed save, the creature takes 4d8 force damage, or half as much on a successful save. Either way, the creature and any loose objects in the area of the wall are pushed 10 feet away from the wall in a direction you choose.
A creature that attempts to pass through the wall must spend its action making an Athletics check against your spell save DC. Creatures wearing metal medium or heavy armor, or which are carrying or made of a comparable amount of metal, have disadvantage on their check. On a successful check, the creature takes 2d8 force damage and passes through the wall. On a failed save, the creature takes 4d8 force damage and is pushed back 10 feet.
At Higher Levels. When you cast this spell using a spell slot of 5th level or higher, the damage for a failed save increases by 1d8 for each slot level above 4th.

Welcome to level 13, Bad Kids!
The stress of escaping Baron and the nightmare briefcase Mordred Manor has boosted the Bad Kids up to level 13! Let's take a look at what's new. (And if you're curious about what they did for levels 11 and 12, I've got you covered!)
Adaine: Wizard 13. She learns two new spells, which can now be 1st-7th level, and gets a 7th-level spell slot (in addition to the new spells she got in her downtime). We know one of these spells is Plane Shift! She has a bunch of options, and some of them are nasty, so I'm very excited to see what's in store. She can also now prepare 18 spells a day (previously 17).
Fabian: Fighter 6/Bard 7 (was Fighter 6/Bard 6). He learns a new spell, which can now be 1st-4th level, and gets a 4th-level spell slot. Options for him include Freedom of Movement, Dimension Door, Greater Invisibility, and Polymorph, among others.
Fig: Bard 10/Paladin 2/Warlock 1 (was Bard 9/Paladin 2/Warlock 1). She learns a new bard cantrip, gets a 6th-level spell slot, gains expertise (double proficiency bonus) in two skills, her Bardic Inspiration goes from a d8 to a d10, and she gains Magical Secrets--she can learn two spells (1st-6th level) from any class list!
Gorgug: Barbarian 6/Artificer 7 (was Barbarian 6/Artificer 6). He gets a third 2nd-level spell slot, as well as Flash of Genius, which lets him use a reaction to add his intelligence modifier (+3) to any ability check or saving throw made by him or by a creature within 30 feet of him. He can do this 3 times a day (equal to his intelligence modifier). We already saw him offer to use it this episode!
Kristen: Cleric 13. She gets a 7th-level spell slot and access to 7th level spells! These include Plane Shift (which we've already seen both her and Adaine use), Fire Storm, Resurrection, and Conjure Celestial, plus a few more. She can also now prepare 18 spells a day (previously 17).
Riz: Rogue 13. His sneak attack damage increases from 6d6 to 7d6, he gets two 3rd-level spell slots, and he can learn a new 1st-3rd level Enchantment or Illusion wizard spell. He also gains Versatile Trickster, which allows him to use a bonus action to distract a creature with his Mage Hand cantrip and gain advantage on attacks against them until the end of his turn.
Everyone's HP goes up and they get another hit die, but biggest at level 13 (total class level, not individual, so our multiclass kids aren't left out) is an increase to their proficiency bonus! Everyone's proficient skills, attack rolls, saving throws, and save DCs go up by one. For those of you enjoying Reliable Talent, this means Riz's minimum stealth roll is now a 25. My god.
Hope you enjoyed, see you next time, and as always please let me know if I’ve missed anything!

September Challenge– Days 27, 28, & 29
Coming into the final few days of the challenge, and I am officially caught up here on tumblr! These are the last 3 days of the challenge, looking at some more of the digital-only MtG mechanics through an explicitly D&D-based lens. Definitely some fun and interesting ideas here, and a while not all of them are useful, I expect to explore some of the others a lot more.

🎊 twst 4th year anni ABEMA stream 🎉
Tumblr media
***TWST JP news + anniversary spoilers below the cut!***
The stream starts with Ace, Deuce, Jack, Ruggie, and Sebek's VAs replying to a bunch of quiz questions. I think Ace or Deuce responds with "810" when asked how many items there are on the Heartslabyul lounge's coffee table. Sebek's VA also has a hilarious answer when asked how many Draconians (wakasama fans) there are, he pulls out some super absurdly high number with tons of zeros in it.
There is then a Master Chef/Culinary Crucibles-type section where the VAs decorate their own cake for TWST's anniversary. It’s a team effort! Ace and Deuce put on the cream, Sebek added cookies on top, and Jack and Ruggie did the final decorations. It ended up looking pretty cute ^^ (Ace's VA is the one that added all the whipped cream peaks; it was mostly thanks to Ruggie's VA that the cake still looked aesthetically pleasing at the end.)
Actual game-related news time!!! The SR Grim card for the 4th anniversary is... drumroll please...!! 🥁Apprentice Chef Grim!!! ABGKSKVUkvuDSQEVUOFDFIHAFVA HE'S SO CUTE, HE EVEN HAS A LIL TUNA CAN CAKE 😭
Tumblr media
For anniversary, there will be a series of free items given out if you log in during the event period (11th to 25th), which includes THREE 10-pull keys (released on the 11th, 15th, and 18th, respectively). You can receive up to 12 days' worth of freebies. There will be an anniversary banner as per usual; you can earn tokens by pulling on this and then trade them in for a SR magical key (50 tokens) and/or past event-limited SSRs (150 tokens), including past years' birthday cards (100 tokens). There will be a new "Event Recollection" feature which allows you to experience events that you may have missed getting the initial chance to play through yourself.
Mr. S's Mystery Shop will sell items from past events such as limited Groovy materials and spell upgrade materials. This is called the "Memory Shop".
You will be able to mark (multiple) parts of the story as your "favorite". This will be indicated with a pink heart icon.
Battles will have a new feature which allows you to save team compositions for them. Up to 25 compositions may be saved at a time. You can also pin your supports, so you no longer have to scroll to find a specific friend's character to borrow.
There will be 3 new item gachas added to the "Item Lotto" of the shop (for Crewel, Vargas, and Trein). Previously, there was only Sam's. You use a new type of medal (obtained by taking classes) to roll on the teachers' lottos, and can pull items related to what you'd typically earn in each of their classes.
Crewel's gacha may provide an herbal tea which can be used to boost Buddy Levels, including those for characters that are otherwise unable to take Alchemy classes. That means Crowley, Rollo, etc. are fair game. (Yes, you can force feed them tea to obtain FRIENDSHIP✨) The tea may also drop during Special Lessons or Alchemy class.
We finally get magical key conversion! On the summoning screen, you can turn 10 single pull keys into one 10-pull key (which guarantees at least 1 SR; single keys do not have this benefit).
The Guest Room will receive a second floor to decorate. This will be unlocked once you reach a Guest Room rank of 31.
The Guest Room rank cap will be increased from 30 to 40. Additionally, all properties of floor 1 appears to carry over to floor 2. This means the same comfort level and attributes will be present across both.
New BGMs will be added to Mr. S's Mystery Shop. There will also be new voice lines added to Alchemy, Flying, and the outfit selection screen. The official TWST soundtrack will be released on the 29th of May, though preorders are tentatively open now. It is 140+ tracks (149, to be exact!) across 4 discs and goes for 4620 yen (inclusive of tax; without tax the soundtrack is 4200 yen). Japanese retailers are offering different dorms' A5 sized holographic sticker sheets as bonuses for preordering.
That's it for now, mostly quality of life changes! There will most likely be a 4th year anniversary PV/animated short on the actual anniversary day (the 18th)!

something echoes of the solstice really pulled into sharp relief is just how good of a player sam riegel is.
like. the bait and switch of veth not going but luc jumping into the portal as a bratty teenager with stolen gear. level 5 arcane trickster and level 3 wizard (unsure of subclass, likely transmutation. edit: war magic). terrifying that a teenager is on a mission with god-level characters. horrifying to think about. i hope they have a fjorester wedding oneshot like dalen's closet that luc is still grounded at.
adding chaos to the party immediately. everyone put protections on him, as much as they could. he said i'm here to bring a reminder of what the mighty nein was and is. and buttering up the party was deeply funny. especially seeing the dichotomy between caleb and fjord's responses.
sidenote: shoutout to daniel sloss for being another spurt. fully a crash dummy drunken master monk in a kilt. it must have been so cool. triggering traps so the nein didn't take damage within the archive. put the fear of death in luc.
anyway, look at how effective luc was. the invisible mage hand. experimental potion from yeza, which i suspect gave him hp and asis temporarily, but not an expanded spell list. see invisibility in the house to catch trent, when none of the rest of the party could find him, which prompted the antimagic field, beau's hits, and the transition to the second battle map. enlarge on the t-rex for kaiju battle. and the first to damage the egg with a 28 on his attack roll with the security cannon. as a level 8 among level 20s. luc got so much experience out of that battle. no more dying in the fire plane for luc, no sirree.
only 1st and 2nd level spells at base. pretty much comparable to an 8th level spellcaster sidekick or 4th level spellcaster main. big moves from a small lad.
and he's still grounded at the end of the day.
anyway this is a sam riegel/luc "nott the reckless" brenatto appreciation post. he plays a rogue-wizard very well.

Hear me out. Fearne has 9 levels in Druid, which gives her access to spells up to 5th level. Blight is a 4th level spell. Ashley Johnson has the opportunity to be the funniest person in Critical Role right now.
