Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner: ‘I’m comfortable with the idea that things don’t have to be a pop song’
The most influential frontman of his generation is also the least at ease with it. He discusses abandoning rock norms, singing from the gut and treading the fine line between cryptic and gooey on new album The Car
Not for the first time, Alex Turner has lost his train of thought. In a booth of a downtown Manhattan diner, the Arctic Monkeys frontman is hunched forward, grasping for words to describe their new album – a black-tie orgy of cinematic soul, lurid funk and perfumed 60s strings. A waiter swoops in to save him. Would Turner like some milk for his coffee? “I’ll have a bit of milk, yes please,” he says. She returns a minute later, and Turner, having strung together no more than half a sentence, eagerly tops up his mug. “OK,” he says, rubbing his hands. “OK. Now we’ve got it.”
During our two-hour conversation, the affable introvert is determinedly, delightfully animated: he bashes imaginary woodblocks, sprawls across his moulded seat, clasps thin air and shakes it like a Magic 8 Ball. His turquoise jumper’s V-neck reveals a thin gold necklace, which he fondles while digressing into monologues on the genius of composer David Axelrod. Turner has been portrayed as aloof and evasive, but he is a man of pensive silences – an ambivalent overthinker trapped in an eccentric entertainer’s body.
He tries to describe orchestrating that new album, The Car. “Rather than strings on top of rock,” he says finally, “I was interested in switching the ‘rock band’ bit on and off.” He tweaks levels on a mixing desk in his mind’s eye. “With the Sculptures song” – the dizzyingly gorgeous Sculptures of Anything Goes – “the ‘rock band’ fader comes up for two bars here and there, and then it’s switched back off.”
He inspects this thought, then flings out his arms and freezes. He looks like a magician alarmed the rabbit is missing from his hat. Slowly, he reboots. “And I don’t remember doing that quite so … deliberately before,” he concludes. A boyish smile. “Phew!” He clutches his chest. “I didn’t think I was gonna get to the end of that sentence.”
But Turner, 36, is nothing if not acutely self-aware and very funny with it. But surely this superstar, whose new haircuts trend on Twitter, is too famous to be such a brooder. Each of his eight albums, including the two with the Last Shadow Puppets, his project with friend Miles Kane, has debuted at No 1 in the UK. Since its 2013 release, the Monkeys’ juggernaut of a fifth album, AM, has taken just one week’s holiday from the UK Top 100. It spent most of September back inside the Top 10, after the band headlined Reading and Leeds festivals.
The AM era lasted a couple of years – long enough for the Sheffield boys’ image as pomade-slick, leather-jacketed Los Angeles dirtbags to stick in the public memory for good. So when Arctic Monkeys got back to mischief, with 2018’s fantastically strange Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, fans were confounded. Turner had assembled a cast of distractible narrators to interrogate modern society – technology, politics, hyperreal LA – in a retro-futurist concept album set in a lunar colony. On stage, dressed like a 70s geography teacher, he now addressed crowds with comical formality. Sceptics said he had lost the plot, calling it an act of self-sabotage – or worse, a class betrayal. In Sheffield, somebody graffitied a coffin on a gate at Hunter’s Bar – the area immortalised in Fake Tales of San Francisco. “Hey Alex,” the caption read. “How’s California?”
While tighter and grander than its predecessor, Arctic Monkeys’ seventh album is blissfully unconcerned with correcting the record. It swings from a louche, movie-soundtrack intro to Portishead-stark noir, improbably catchy yacht-funk and the poppy bombast of Elliott Smith’s LA era. At times, Turner dips into a slick, syrupy croon, though he recoils from the word’s stuffy baggage.
“You sort of wish there was a way around the things attached to that word [croon],” he says. “But yeah, everything’s come down a little bit. And I like that, because if it’s come down here” – he runs a finger from his forehead to his ribcage – “it’s out of your head. It’s more coming from …”
He hunts for the word. The heart? I suggest, as he flings invisible confetti from his chest.
“The heart,” he agrees, sounding a bit uncomfortable. “Or even better: the gut.”
Turner is not all the way out of his head just yet. He sings much of The Car in a falsetto that trapezes between Sly Stone and David Byrne. The anxious melodies strike a delicate balance with the sumptuous strings. “You don’t want it to get gooey,” he reasons. “But it’s nice to get to the perimeter of that. There may have been discussions about where that line is, and how many times you can get close to it.”
Still, Turner’s bamboozling lyrics preclude slushiness. Traces of Yorkshire chansonnier Jake Thackray and punk-poet John Cooper Clarke remain, but Turner’s bon mots are now elaborately encrypted. Struggle though you may to picture festival crowds bellowing some of the lyrics here (Hello You opens: “Lego Napoleon movie / written in noble gas-filled glass tubes / underlined in sparks”), you can never rule it out. The similarly inscrutable 505, an album cut from 2007’s Favourite Worst Nightmare, recently caused a sensation on TikTok.
Maybe tackling impenetrable lyrics helps bring us deeper into a song, I suggest. Turner laughs. “I like the idea of you putting that in here and everybody going: ‘Ah, I dunno, sounds tough. We won’t give it a listen after all.’” He admits to scribbling notes in his printed lyric book, teasing out themes mysterious even to him. “The Annotated Lyrics,” he jokes, imitating a 1950s ad man. “Get that stocking filler out for Christmas.”
From the moment in the mid-00s when Arctic Monkeys blew up, Turner has longed to go incognito. He strode undercover into his new public life, a frightened teenager hiding inside a big swagger, collecting shiny awards for songs he had written for mates of mates in pub backrooms. In 2006, the band released what was then the UK’s all-time fastest-selling debut album – a death sentence for his man-of-the-people, kitchen-sink writing style.
On 2009’s Humbug, co-produced by Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme, Turner escaped into a rock archetype. The band’s hairier second phase amped up the sleaze and elliptical lyrics, culminating in the darkly spectacular AM. By this point, the bequiffed Turner was harder to read, particularly in his divisive speech at the 2014 Brit Awards. “That rock’n’roll, eh,” he drawled with indeterminate sincerity. “It’s always waiting there, just around the corner. Ready to make its way back through the sludge and smash through the glass ceiling, looking better than ever. Yeah, that rock’n’roll …”
At the mention of the speech, and its concluding mic drop, Turner winces, sucking air through his teeth. But, I say, since Tranquility, the moment looks more like performance art – perhaps it anticipated his scepticism towards the rock construct. He listens intently, then, on the last point, springs back as if harpooned to his seat. “That’s interesting, yeah, yeah, yeah,” he says, head bobbing vigorously. He chews it over, talking half to himself. “So we’re saying it’s tied to AM, because of the haircut and … that performer …”
He seems unsure just how much of himself was in the mic-dropping rock star.
“When you think about that, and the clothes,” he continues, “I wasn’t doing that with [fourth album] Suck It and See or [third] Humbug. It wasn’t grease in the hair.” He pauses again, considering each album’s “performer” – always a fractured reflection of himself. “Normally, the record you make encourages a certain style of performance. But thinking about the performer in relation to Tranquility, or even this thing” – meaning the new album – “I have considered that you can invert that. The performer can influence the music, rather than the other way around.”
The Car’s performer more closely resembles the Turner I meet today: brilliant company but palpably self-scrutinising – a far cry from the headstrong Brits character. Turner wrote most of the album at the piano, souping up Tranquility’s vanquished lounge singer with a spritz of Rat Pack razzmatazz. Turner and the band’s producer, James Ford, separately drafted string arrangements that the composer Bridget Samuels simplified and edited.
Turner seems mildly embarrassed by the prospect of using strings live (a proposed orchestral TV special was deemed too predictable), but the album sounds just as exquisite without them. During a stunning show at Brooklyn’s Kings theatre the week of our interview, the band premiere three songs: the resplendent There’d Better Be a Mirrorball, a fingerpicked heart-warmer called Mr Schwartz and soon-to-be staple Body Paint, whose gnomic chorus crowdsurfs along a festival-slaying melody: “Straight from the cover shoot,” Turner coos, “There’s still a trace of body paint / On your legs and on your arms and on your face.”
As with 505 or Crying Lightning, it is a head-scratcher fated for mass seduction. “Not exactly what you’d imagine singing over the loud bit,” Turner concurs, chuckling. The body paint could represent almost anything: a literal costume; a stubborn artistic persona; or in a spunkier reading, the residue of an illicit affair. “But it’s as much about the musical ideas as the lyrics,” Turner says. “On Mirrorball, before the words even come in, that instrumental piece [establishes] the feel of the record”: wistful, enigmatic, acutely reminiscent of 70s European cinema. “All right,” Turner recalls thinking after writing it in 2020. “This feels like how the next record starts.”
Turner now lives between London and Paris with the French singer-songwriter Louise Verneuil. He composed most of the album alone, using the technique he road-tested on AM and adopted wholesale on Tranquility: compose, demo, inspect, tweak and re-record, repeat the process to death and eventually add drums and vintage keyboards. Finally: bring in the band.
In the summer of 2021, Arctic Monkeys convened at Butley Priory, a wedding venue and makeshift studio in Suffolk. On a whim, Turner brought his 60mm video camera to document the sessions, later compiling his footage for the impressively chic There’d Better Be a Mirrorball video. “That gave everybody a bit of room,” he says. “James [Ford] definitely didn’t mind that I had something to play with.” During downtime, the band watched the Euros and nipped outdoors for kickabouts. “I do get caught up in those tournaments. Something about that feeling connects you to when you were a kid. You find yourself thinking about Euro 96. And then it ends, and you almost feel a bit mad for feeling like that.”
That proximity to yesteryear haunts the record, not least in the creeping jazz element, which evokes his jazz-musician dad’s records and saxophone noodlings in Turner’s childhood home. “It came out the front in Tranquility, and there’s definitely a bit more this time,” he says. “It’s one of those things that you try to fly quite close to without [crossing over]. That music you’re around when you’re a kid always has a special power.”
Strikingly, the more sentimentality creeps into the music, the less forthright emotion surfaces in Turner’s lyrics. I ask if he is equally withholding in private – does he find it harder, as he gets older, to tell people he loves them? He laughs. “No, no, I don’t think so. I like to think that outside songwriting, I find it more straightforward to be direct.” He is prone to embarrassment by lyrics from bygone years. Perhaps the more elemental style, with fewer obvious footholds, helps minimise the cringing? “I like the idea that I’m getting better at the … I sort of want to say distillation.” He handles the word cautiously. “I think I’m better at picking the moment to expose the idea behind the song. But you have to be comfortable with the idea that things don’t have to be a pop song.”
What has remained constant since the beginning, he says, “is the instinct of it all”. Even the meticulous experiments of Tranquility and The Car stem from his faith in his bloody-minded intuition. I remind him of something he said, aged 19, about the perils of fame: “When you want it and you get obsessive, you mould yourself to be whatever they want you to be.”
He laughs. “It’s a heck of a time to drop a quote from 2005, when we’re talking about stuff to be embarrassed about.” But he agrees Arctic Monkeys’ instincts and gang mentality insulated them from industry games and greed. “The name of the band seems to allude to how limited the expectations were,” he adds. “If you realised you were gonna be doing this 20 years later, you might’ve had another hour in that meeting.”
Fatalistic fans have already forecast the band’s demise based on the single’s valedictory lyrics, but while the album abounds with goodbyes, Turner seems full of optimism about the future. His bandmates are, too. “You can tell when they’re excited and when there’s that palpable indifference,” he says, grinning. Does he still get much of the latter? “Surely. Intermittently. I’m grateful for it sometimes.” He drifts off again with a dreamy look, zeroing in on the right turn of phrase. “Between the band and James Ford …” he begins, unhappy with the imperfect words he has found. “I can’t do it on my own, I guess is what I’m trying to say.”

I have just under 2 yards of really nice 60” wide pale gray wool. Definitely making a jumper/pinafore dress out of it, but currently stuck on whether I want a pleated skirt or a circle skirt. Anyone got an opinion?

Sleeper Train
Lisa heard the whistle of the train as she boarded at Santa Maria Novella station in Florence. She was looking forward to this experience. The Orient Express was a historic train journey that she had not experienced before and she was glad of the opportunity to do so, even if she was not intending on completing the full route. She had a long brown overcoat on that she had bought in Florence during her days of preparation and she squeezed down the corridors of the historic train, passing by other passengers to get to her single cabin. She placed her holdall on the bed and sat in a chair in the room in her long jumper and jeans, looking as nondescript as possible. It was not the most spacious place she had ever stayed but the room was beautiful nonetheless, doing its best to keep the art deco interior that kept the tradition of the train alive.
She settled down and read a book, pausing only when a conductor passed to check her ticket and offer her a beverage, which she declined politely. It was a long night’s ride between Florence and Paris, the train going through the mountainside. Dinner would be served in a couple of hours but until then, Lisa contented herself with some reading and looking at the Italian countryside from the window.
The train rumbled along and eventually Lisa made her way towards the first class dinner service that she had booked at 7:30pm. She settled into a seat at a table by herself and ordered a sparkling water from the waiter. Lisa looked around the dinner carriage. There were a lot of married couples on the train, some older and seemingly celebrating their wedding anniversaries, some younger too.
She leaned back and looked over her shoulder and finally saw her target. Maurice Louvin was a heavy set older man in his 60s in a black suit, sitting at a table with his wife who was about 15 years younger than him and dressed in a blue satin dress with a plunging neckline. Lisa observed that there were four men dressed in suits near them at their own table, not eating or drinking alcohol. It would be his security detail.
It was towards the higher end of her expectations but not an unreasonable obstacle she concluded as her food was served. Her gear was hi-tec enough for the hit and she at least knew that they would all be contained in a private carriage. This was the best opportunity to target Louvin. He was the chairperson of an international bank and normally travelled in a tight security bubble but this journey on the train during his annual excursion with his wife was the best opportunity to take him out. Marina had asked her to complete the job and Lisa was enjoying getting double her fee whilst helping the group create opportunities for potential allies.
Her meal was suitably delicious and she finished it before settling her cheque. She walked back towards her cabin and settled down for another few hours, watching the sun set behind the mountains and let night time roll in. She continued to read and keep her mind calm and alert like the professional she was.
At 11pm, she put the ‘do not disturb’ sign on her door and closed the shutters. It was time to get ready. Lisa stripped down to her black bra and knickers and admired her toned shape in the mirror. She dressed in a figure hugging, tight black catsuit that clung to her like a second skin but also gave her great flexibility for movement. She finished the look with some black boots and black gloves before assembling her weaponry.
Inside her holdall was a black thigh holster that she strapped to her left leg, hooking the top strap to a tactical belt on her waist. Inside it she placed a suppressed Sig-P22 and a spare magazine for the pistol. She gave the gun a quick clean, making sure the suppressor was lubricated and quiet if needs be before turning to her main weapon. She loaded two extended magazines for a Mac-11 and then meticulously cleaned that gun too, threading a lubricated thick suppressor onto its end and increasing the gun length. The Mac-11 had a stock she could fold and unfold easily as well as a strap that she placed over her shoulder. She folded the stock away before loading the first magazine of bullets and placing the spare within her tactical belt.
The clock on her wall was showing 11:45 and Lisa felt ready. She got the remaining items out of her holdall. She had a black balaclava and some night vision goggles and attached them onto her belt. The rest of her clothes and her book all went into the holdall and she put the long overcoat she had procured over the top. She undid the window latch in her cabin and pushed her holdall out of the window as they approached a tunnel. She would not need it again.
Using her overcoat to conceal her weapons, Lisa left her cabin, using a lockpick tool to lock the door again from the outside. The train carriage was quiet, with most people sleeping in their rooms. She heard a woman moaning in pleasure as she passed one carriage and smirked - at least some people were still enjoying the journey.
The lights in the carriages were dim as Lisa made her way down, not passing anyone and keeping her hands inside her overcoat pockets. If anyone caught a glimpse of her, she would look like any regular passenger. The train was now in a rural area as she had planned and over the French border. There were hardly any lights outside and the moon was hidden beneath clouds. All around the countryside had a strange dullness to it, with few shapes able to be properly seen.
Lisa kept her ears tuned to the sounds of the rumble of the carriages as the train ambled along and looked again at her watch. It was close to midnight and close to her time to strike. She stepped towards the private carriage and found a small nook to pause in, listening for but hearing no movement. She used the opportunity to ditch her overcoat and put on the black balaclava with no mouthpiece, grateful it was made of an expensive breathable material. She put the night vision goggles over the top but kept them off her eyes for now.
There was a small space in between the carriages and Lisa moved into it and outside of the train, feeling the cold of the night air as she did so. She settled her feet as the train made a turn and made sure she clung on tight to some railings. She saw the electrical box that powered the private carriage and took her Sig with one hand out of its thigh holster. Pfft. She fired a quick shot into the box and then moved quickly, holstering the pistol and pulling down her night vision goggles.
The world became illuminated in green but Lisa was already moving again, this time opening the door to the private carriage, unfolding the stock on her Mac-11. There were two of the men in black suits standing outside the main cabin in the carriage, both of them startled by the pitch black caused by her electrical fault. Lisa realised they could not see her as planned but they were both reaching inside their suit jackets for guns.
Lisa was faster, pushing the stock of the Mac-11 into her shoulder and raising the gun, one hand on the trigger and the other controlling the barrel’s direction. Pfft-pfft-pfft, pfft-pfft-pfft. She fired two quick bursts, one into each man and saw them crumple towards the floor. A door to one of the cabin opened and Lisa saw another security guards head pop out, wearing just a vest and some boxer shorts. She changed her angle to get a wider view of him before pfft-pfft-pfft, she gunned him down too.
She looked inside the cabin and saw the final security guard sleeping. Pfft-pfft-pfft. She made it permanent with a quick volley. Lisa allowed herself a smile at the beauty of her craftsmanship. She changed to a single shot fire and pfft, pfft, added headshots to two of the men who may have been stirring.
Her finger clicked the gun back into burst shot mode as she walked into the plush suite that was the home of Louvin and his wife for the evening. Their cabin was bigger and the bed was larger. The two bodies in the bed stirred as they sensed her entering. Louvin was wearing a blue sleep shirt and tried to flick at the bedside light to no avail. Pfft-pfft-pfft, pfft-pfft-pfft. Lisa put two bursts into his chest, looking down the barrel of the gun as she did so. She switched her aim to his wife.
Mrs. Louvin was in a satin nightdress that Lisa admired for a second before aiming down the barrel of her Mac-11 towards her breasts. Pfft-pfft-pfft. The blood that exploded from her breasts as they were hit looked bright green in the night vision but Lisa knew what was happening anyway. She added another volley pfft-pfft-pfft just for her own amusement before switching the gun to single-shot mode. Pfft, pfft. Two headshots ensured her work had been completed in less than 30 seconds.
As she went out to the rest of the cabin, she kept her gun at the ready and turned as she saw a door open. One of the train’s conductors shone a torch light in her direction but Lisa saw his shape distinctly with her goggles and fired a burst into his chest pfft-pfft-pfft before he could do anything. She changed the magazine on reflex before making her way out of the carriage towards the gap between it and the other carriages.
Lisa looked at her watch again. She was almost at the point she needed over the river. She felt the train move over a bridge and took her goggles off, strapping them to her belt, along with the Mac-11. As the train moved over a bridge that straddled a river, Lisa took a quick run and jumped over the edge, turning her fall into an elegant dive that cut into the water cleanly on impact.
She kicked her way to the surface and took in a large gulp of air, taking off her balaclava. A light on a nearby boat flashed at her and Lisa made her way over to it with powerful swimming strokes.
A woman’s hand came down from the small fishing boat and helped pull her onboard. “Merci bien” Lisa said to the woman. She was in her 40s but still in good shape, with curly hair.
“Pas de probleme” the woman responded. “Yvette”. She offered her hand.
“Lisa” she replied, shaking it. Yvette started the small motor on the boat and together they began the journey down the river. The moon finally broke free from the clouds and Lisa could make out the Orient Express in the distance, winding its way along the countryside, still unaware of the brilliant work she had just executed upon it.
She settled back on the boat and relaxed, pleased with her work as Yvette steered them towards her village.

32, 33, 50 & secret 51st option do you think he’s cute do you like him?? :3
Tumblr media
32 - If you could live in a fictional world, which one would you pick?
Honestly? Whatever is going on in Animal Crossing - preferably City Folk/Let's Go to the City.
33 - If money was no object, what would your wardrobe be like?
It'd have so much 60s-70s dresses and shirts and pants, some beautifully horrid patterned jumpers, and a lot more cool jeans (I recently got some rainbow stripe jeans and I love them).
50 - What's your favourite kind of weather?
Probably the lead up to summer (before I start melting).
51 - Do you think he's cute? Do you like him?
He is everything to me. Tennis ball...
Thank you Ed!! Looooove you

About me
Thanks @littledreamling for the tag
Nickname: Usually Breezy! My first name is a place name, so some of my friends call me by other place names (but more commonly acquaintances who think they are funnier than they are 🙄)
Sign: Sagittarius sun, Taurus moon, Aquarius rising. I hope that doesn't give away all my secrets
Height: 5'7 or 170cm!
Last thing I googled: "Wilfred Owen Letter to Wife poem". It's actually called "The Letter"
Song stuck in my head: I don't have one at the moment which I'm grateful for because I have a headache which feels like someone is trying to lobotomise me through my left eye. (I've taken some painkillers so I'm just being dramatic until they kick in)
Followers: 138! Thanks to everyone for politely waiting out the Goncharov phase
Amount of sleep: I regularly get 9-10 hours of sleep because otherwise I feel so bad 😥 I am envious of people who need less because for me 8 hours and 4 hours feel the same 🤢
Dream job: probably also a professor, like Crow! I'd love to be able to do research on things I'm interested in (it's always gay nuns, but recently it's also polygyny within medieval Jewish communities), and chat with colleagues about theirs, and write articles, and make lots of powerpoint presentations (I love them because I can even script in my jokes), and see what the younger generation are interested in when it comes to history! However, as we have established I am a very tired person, so I'm not sure how well I would cope with the expectation of out of hours work.
Wearing: Blue silk pyjama bottoms decorated with little white vines and flowers, brown walking socks, and a long fluffy hooded! dressing gown which I would probably call maroon or burgundy. Don't judge me for this (or do, I deserve it).  For the more wattpad experience we can also say that I have thrown my long brown hair into a messy bun.
Books/movies that summarise me: I could ask my friends, or I could just insert a picture of the DSM-V here because that's what they'll all send me
Favourite song: I don't have favourite anythings to be honest, but my most played song this year (at a whopping 22 times) was Zitti e Buoni by Måneskin. Lyric-wise I'm still obsessed with Tongues & Teeth by The Crane Wives, specifically "I know that you mean so well, but I am not a vessel for your good intent".
Favourite instrument: I've played clarinet, recorder, guitar, and keyboard, none of which I had any talent for 😂
Aesthetic: I've been told so many things about how I dress so I'll try to keep it brief. I own an eclectic collection of dresses (probably 60+) and tend to favour colourful patterns for daily wear and single colour grecian-style drapes for formal events. I likewise own lot of colourful patterned tops (described by my friends as "pretty", "flattering", "interesting", and "like you took it from your mum's wardrobe" (she gave it to me)) which I wear with jeans. That said, I can most commonly be found in my "grandad" looks of a men's shirt open over a vest or buttoned to the bare minimum of decency, or one of my two favourite golf jumpers (one grey, one beige).
Favourite authors: I don't have favourite authors of books (though I definitely do for fanfiction), but I do want to read more Margaret Atwood because I've only read The Handmaid's Tale and that one quote from The Robber Bride that lives rent free in my head.
Random fun fact: I managed to get super glue in my mouth when I was decorating a christmas bauble with watch parts last night! Very on brand, I'm notoriously clumsy. I also only managed to super glue two of my fingers together, so that is a new record
Tagging @bidet-and-legolas @a-liittle-bit-of-both and anyone who fancies it!

Dresses and Skirts
Maxi Dresses, Prairie Dresses, 60s mini shift dresses, jumper dresses, drop waist dresses, sheath dresses, tunic dresses, sleeveless jumper dresses, mod dresses, shirtwaist dresses with tie belts, fit and flare dresses with large collars, A-line dresses, two piece tunic dresses, sheer floral tie string waist dresses, granny dress or peasant dress, corduroy skirts/velvet, polyester fabrics/skirts/dresses, suede skirts/dresses and denim skirts/dresses.
(You can find these everywhere, but here are big vintage clothing brands, that has some of these.)
1. Unique Vintage
2. Blue Velvet Vintage
3. ModCloth
4. Rose Gal
Tumblr media
T-Shirts, Graphic Tees and Tops
Graphic t-shirts were very popular in the 70s also known as band tees. You can find a lot of band tees at alternative stores and pretty much everywhere. From Bees gees, to Bowie or earth wind and fire bands, if you're a more casual vintage band tees are your way to go!
Turtlenecks, striped long sleeve shirts, lots of patterns and colors were common during the 70s, so you could always search up 'patterned long sleeve top' or 'red turtleneck.'
Tumblr media
Accessories, Jewelry and Shoes
Bags and Purses were usually Bohemian based or looking, suggesting suede or supple leather and shoulder bags with wider longer straps. These are more difficult to find non designer based brands for, so just remember Bohemian! (Lol)
Hats, oversized newsboy caps, tall homburg hats, fuzzy felt hats, western straw hats braided leather bands.
Jewelry, biggest jewelry trend was yellow gold, gold hoop earrings, gold necklaces, yellow gold all the way! It's all about feel good jewelry! Chunky rings, pendents, chokers, large studs, natural material made jewelry, lots of turquoise stones, gold chains, beads, crystals, bangles/cuffs, gemstones, ankle bracelets and sautoirs.
Shoes, CLOGS, CLOGS, CLOGS, (lol) platforms(of all kinds), fringe top boots, over the ankle boots, crinkle vinyl granny boots, tapestry boots, chunky heeled shoes, hi-rise pumps, feather moc-ankle boot, slip ons, evening sandals, denim boots, Moc-toe oxford, Ghillie lace boots, patterned cow girl boots and leather slides.

THANK YOU FOR READING!
That's all for Women's 70s, if you want a specific decade to be looked at request it, if you want to know where to find specific items, Request it!! Have a good day! My Masterlist!

"Fuck! I thought for sure you'd blame Pandit for it!" - Gustave Olofsson
Biographical information
Full Name: Gustave Olofsson
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Gay
Status: Incarcerated
Age: 60 (season 1)
Birth: 1953
Race: Human
Nationality: Swedish
Origin: Gothenburg, Sweden
Residence:
Grimsborough, USA
Chhattisgarh, India (formerly)
Gothenburg, Sweden (formerly)
Profession(s): Surgeon
Affiliation(s): Switch Laboratories
Profile
Height: 6'0" Age: 60 (season 1) Weight: 213lbs Eyes: green Blood: O-
Gustave is a Swedish man with light skin, slicked-back black hair, a trim goatee and cold green eyes. He wears a wrinkle-free blue dress shirt with a black silk tie and black slacks. His dress shoes are polished to a shine, and he has an orange lab coat with a Switch Laboratories pin on the left side.
As per his suspect appearance in A Shock to the Team, it is known that Gustave eats Singhara ki Barfi and knows biology.
Synopsis
Gustave was the killer of his ex-boss Victoria Holt. He was a surgeon for Switch Laboratories back when it operated in India before U.N.I.T. destroyed it and the team's entire research. He knew about Victoria's plan to secretly develop custom poisons to be sold on the black market, but he didn't know about her allegiance to SOMBRA. But he enjoyed the money he was making by helping Victoria, so he never questioned who their "private investors" were.
After U.N.I.T. destroyed the laboratory, Gustave was arrested and spent several years in jail for his involvement. He hated Victoria for abandoning him and the other scientists to take the fall for her work and vowed revenge. Every day that he spent behind bars, he plotted how best to destroy the woman who destroyed his life.
After being released from prison, he moved to the United States to find new work using a secret laboratory hidden under an abandoned iPear store. But he didn't anticipate Victoria coming out of the shadows to find him and ask for his help in restarting Project Elysium. He couldn't believe that Victoria thought he would just forget about what she did to him, and he wanted to kill her right then and there.
But he decided to wait and see if Project Elysium could be restarted before he eliminated her. If they could resume their work, Gustave would become rich again. But he wouldn't let Victoria leave him under a destroyed building this time. Instead, she would be the one taking the fall. So when he found out that Victoria had located Nathan Pandit, the man who had helped destroy Switch Laboratories and who had the key to recreating their work, he knew victory was within reach.
So, Gustave and Victoria created a plan to kidnap Nathan and take him away from Grimsborough. But Victoria deviated from the plan and tried to take Nathan behind Gustave's back. When the Swed found out, he was furious and was even more enraged when he discovered that Nathan had escaped his kidnapping, leaving Victoria unconscious in Gustave's laboratory.
While he was angry at Victoria for the betrayal, Gustave saw this as the perfect opportunity to kill her and take Nathan himself. He tied Victoria to a chair and connected jumper cables to it and the fuse box for the shop's neon sign. With a flip of a switch, Gustave watched as Victoria was electrocuted to a crisp.
Gustave left her body there, uncaring if anyone found it, too confident in himself to think he would be caught. But he was caught, and he cursed the police for sending him back to prison. He would never regain his lost wealth or get revenge on Nathan for the part he played in ruining his life. Now, he would spend the rest of his life behind bars, a poor, sad excuse for a once-famous surgeon.

Trivia
I think I was referencing Gaston from Beauty and the Beast when I designed him, but I'm not positive about that! It's been too long since I created him to remember…;-;
When Jones punched him during the arrest for claiming no one would miss Nathan, he broke Gustave's nose

So based on a Modern AU of Hercules, what kind of Girly-Girl Media would Persephone be into?
My Little Pony? Care Bears? Strawberry Shortcake? Barbie? or something else?
Also, I'm curious to know more about your Modern AU based on Lore Olympus (even though you're not into it) if you have any other headcanons but I would like to know how a Modern Disney! Hadephone would work in a Alternate Story.
AAAA I LOVE THIS QUESTION!!! Thank you for asking lol!!! I love when people ask about my AUs and ocs and fics and stuff like that! Lol it just makes my day to know that people are actually interested in my dumb little ideas lol! 😁💕💕
But yeah! You are correct lol! The modern au is based slightly off of Lore Olympus, but only a little bit, not a lot lol 😊
Anyways, modern Persephone really likes Hello Kitty and the Sanrio brand. She does like Barbie, Care Bears, and My Little Pony a little bit (she thinks those brands are cute as well and she does love unicorns in this universe too lol), but not as much as she loves Sanrio. She loves anything pastel colored or cute honestly lol. I think Persephone would really love Build-A-Bear Workshop too and I like to think Hades takes her there whenever she sees a new plush she really wants (and yes I think Persephone is totally a plushie collector because I too am a plushie collector lol, she is a self insert oc after all lol!).
Persephone (just like Hades) also likes to play video games. Her favorite games are Animal Crossing, Pokémon, Stardew Valley, and Little Big Planet. She also likes to play Mario Kart, any of the Kirby games, Mario Party (with friends, of course, because it’s more fun that way lol), and Super Smash Bros. Hades will sometimes ask her to play first person shooter games with him like Borderlands or Call of Duty and she’s surprisingly pretty good at those, but it’s not her cup of tea.
As for headcanons, well, this modern AU (as I mentioned before) is pretty much an “office romance” sorta thing, so I guess I’ll give headcanons for that lol!
Hades drives a fancy, black sports car.
Cerberus does exist but he’s not gigantic like in the Hercules universe, he’s pretty much the size of a Great Dane lol.
Pain and Panic are his personal assistants.
Persephone drives a cute little pastel yellow sedan.
Hades mainly wears corporate or business casual clothes, but on the weekends or when he hangs out with friends he likes to wear more punk clothing like leather jackets and ripped jeans.
Persephone’s clothing style for work is kinda retro and similar to dresses or outfits from the 50s or 60s. Lots of knee length dresses and and skirts with little cardigans or sweaters and all pastel colored. Her casual wear is mainly just modern girly outfits. Denim jumpers or overalls with cute shirts or cute graphic tees with matching skirts or shorts.
Just like in Hercules and the original Greek lore, Hades is rich and has a really nice little townhouse bachelor pad.
Persephone lives in an apartment not too far from Hades’ townhouse (this is before they get married, of course lol).
Persephone doesn’t have any pets in this AU, but she does volunteer at the animal shelter sometimes when she’s not working.
Before working in the actual office, Persephone used to work part time in the daycare center of Olympus Inc. (the name of the company lol).
Hades and Persephone love going to little cafes. A lot of their dates are pretty much coffee dates lol.
Hades loves to have lunch with Persephone at work and will always take the opportunity to have lunch with her if she’s able.
Sometimes Hades will bring Persephone lunch or grab her favorite coffee for her just so he can see her.

OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN…
Inspired by dark academia, Remus has always had love for the British culture of the 60s donning structured silhouettes in uncomfortable scratchy fabrics that don’t always suit the British weather. Remus feels as though he has met the brief this time, layering up to combat the nip of very early spring in London.
His outfit for the festival is his take on spring, trading his preferred warm autumnal tones for pale hues and consists of his favourite raincoat he found in a vintage shop with Marlene donated likely by someone with money once upon a time due to the durable fabric which shows no signs of age before ending up with Remus. Underneath he wears a collarless shirt which peaks out slightly under a pale grey lightweight jumper, not in his favoured cable knit but instead a cotton. Attempting to dress up from his regular jeans, he is wearing loose fitting tan chino style trousers underneath, which once belonged to one of the marauders who no longer wanted them.
Remus decided to opt for his converse to finish the look, allowing him to tour the alleys without his feet getting tired and allow him to look his age. Allowing him to see the event and all the stalls better, Remus has his glasses in his pocket which he will wear on and off, in order to see his friends and the games he intends to play.

- Gatcombe Fashion Show -
pt.2 but it's Zara time!
(and kinda sentimental)
Let's get started!
A charming, weird dress in both colors and form, probably made of velor ... what an iconic item that every girl had in her childhood in the 80-90s and early 00s. I had one myself..
Rating : Sentimental / 10
Tumblr media
Let's stay in sentimental. I know, it's pic from 90s but oh gosh, I couldn't resist! Long skirt + oversized sweater is such a 90s teenage set, and it reminds me a lot of my mom who wore the same set as Zara. On once of her class pic,my mom had a turquoise sweater and gold pleated skirt. Another Sentimentally / 10
Tumblr media
Denim mini skirt + white knee-length.. say my name in my kindergarten 2005 era! It was so nice set, today is "COQUETTE" or "lOLiTa" style...............
.....bitch wake up, "Lolita" ISN'T ABOUT LOVE AND IT'S NOT A STYLE AAAAA
But Sentimental / 10
Tumblr media
It's perfect. Perfecta, perfect, perfect! White bluse, jeans, green shirt. This jeans look perfect tbh.
Funfact: Anne (who is on background) and her outfit from this pic is also my fav Anne's looks!
plus for the chunky lil boi Apollo in the photo!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Okay but let's talk about this. This vest and jacket are matchy but in such a great way that I can't. The combination of red and pink gives me the vibe of the 50s and 60s (those American lol) and a very "Grease" vibe (reast in peace lovely Sandy ..)
I think this vest and jacket they would fit perfectly in today's fashion and those short down jackets from chain stores in pastel / strong colors (bcs color depends on the season and trends). I also associate them with jackets from @ soniaandthegypsies (THESE JACKETS ARE A DREAM)
First pic, white jumper with vest it's super cutie! She's lil strawberry shake with cherry on top!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Zara is queen headband! It's also such child things. I also wore it through in primary school because I often had Zara's length hair (imagine this...)
Color match it's my fav, red, white and NAVY! Coral from shirt is pretty!
Tumblr media
BONUS TO THIS LOOK:
Tumblr media
hello daddy hehe..
IT'S 1987 OKAY, DO RESEARCH, TAKE A NOTES AND THINK MORE ABOUT IT HOW MEME IS THIS PIC AND TIM'S PRESENCE
CONCLUSION: ZARA IS COOL. COLLER THAN YOU. THAN ME, THAN WHOLE OF fANNE.
Part 3?

Maybe I just don’t know enough about fashion history, but it seems to me that, compared with the other lads, Trigger’s style is just a bit old fashioned. Of course, he has the quirky suits that could be 80s specific, but a lot of the time he’s out in his collar shirts and jumpers/vests. Again, these are not specific to an era, but they do give me 50s/60s vibes. His hats as well, look like things an older gentleman might wear. What I’m getting around to saying, is that as Trigger was raised by his grandparents, he was always dressed by older people. This makes me wonder if he was always a bit behind in style, because his Gran was the one getting his clothes, or his Grandad was passing his down to him. So, compared to his friends who were the same age, but with younger guardians, Trigger got comfortable with an older style and stuck with it. When he does try to get with the times, he does it a bit clumsily. Again, I could just be talking out of my backside, but it’s a thought.

back to the future: which decade in the last century would you most have liked to live in?
pretty in pink: what’s your signature ‘look’?
dirty dancing: where were you when you first heard your favourite song?
better off dead: why did you last laugh so hard it reduced you to tears?
st. elmo’s fire: what’s one piece advice you would give to someone two years younger than yourself?
e.t.: what’s one ‘weird’ feature that you love about yourself?
(i demand an essay and i will not settle for anything less <3333)
Oh my god so many 😂😂 I will try my best on the essay.
Back to the future: I think this is a hard one because I don’t know if there’s any point in time I’d really would want to have lived in. I love music from the 60s and it would be something to live at a time of so much social change, but it don’t want to romanticize any of it - it would also be a time where my parents probably wouldn’t have been able to get married and I wouldn’t have any of the opportunities I have now. Maybe the 80s or relive some parts of the 90s? But just for a couple of days, see some live music & some of the crazy fashion, but I don’t romanticize those days either 😂
Pretty in pink: I’m mostly pretty boring so I wouldn’t say I have a signature look. If it comes down to what I’m wearing most days, it’s either a dress & boots or dark jeans and an oversized shirt/jumper. A lot of grey/black/navy, but I definitely have a bunch of yellow and lighter blue in there too.
Dirty dancing: god I don’t think I can even pick a favorite song? So I’ll just pick something random - when I was a teenager my parents were not a fan of us just listening to any type of popular music (oh no, innuendos and dirty language!) so a lot of my favorite music I found while listening to the radio in our house’s attic, and then recording that music over used cassette tapes 😂
Better off dead: I don’t even know? I know it was this weekend, sitting on the floor of my living room with one of my best friends, I have no idea what we were talking about but we both thought we were hilarious and definitely couldn’t stop laughing and there were definitely tears involved. I’m pretty sure it was something stupid/not funny at all 😂
St Elmo’s fire: this is something I’ve been thinking about a lot recently. I think getting closer to 30, a lot of people around me are freaking out about getting older. 27 year old me definitely thought that becoming 30 would be life ending or that I needed to have achieved certain things in my life by then. I know, dramatic. But if there’s one thing I’ve learned in those two years, and something I would tell someone two years younger than me, it would be that it’s nothing to worry about. I like me more than I ever did at any other point in my 20s. I’m more of a person, you learn so much about yourself in your mid-twenties and it’s all worth it, even if you still have no idea of where you’re going, that’s completely fine. Just being more comfortable with who you are, having deeper connections with friends because you’re less self involved (or at least I was in my early 20s), it’s something you’ll only realize is the best thing about getting older once you’re there. So don’t put so much pressure on yourself, things will happen when they happen, and just because you feel like you’re standing still, doesn’t mean you actually are.
e.t: are we talking physical features or personality wise? I’m gonna go personality wise lol. I think it’s either my ability to remember really random facts, or even more so, the fact that when I hear certain words my mind immediately goes to a song or a quote from a movie or tv show and I cannot stop myself from then having to listen to that song or finding that quote somewhere. Like, I’ll never be able to listen to the word “LinkedIn” without thinking about the show 30 Rock and the quote “he’s on LinkedIn, Lemon, he might as well be dead!” It makes for some pretty random laughs coming from me (at sometimes inopportune moments), but I kinda love that my brain works this way.
Thank you for your ask bubba, I loved doing this 💗💗💗
