REVIEW: Cast No Shadows by Nick Tapalansky & Anissa Espinosa. What a crazy read!! Such an adventure filled story that also deals with some serious topics. There is a lot to unpack here. It seems pretty simple at first and then turns on its head pretty quickly. There is also a lot of humour in the form of a narrator which is really fun and unique. We are introduced to a whole range of characters that all center around the main character who is experiencing a lot of change in his life and is not sure how to cope. I loved the art style and the way the characters interacted with each other. It also integrated paranormal elements in what would normally seem like a typical middle grade story. A wonderful story about family, change, relationships and grief. 4 Stars!! #bookstagram #booklover #bookreview #graphicnovel @nicktapalansky @01firstsecond https://www.instagram.com/p/CeOAqXQL922/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

"Greg has lived in Lancaster his whole life. The town's always had its quirks, and being born without a shadow means he's counted among them. When Greg discovers an old mansion in the woods just outside of town, he didn't expect to meet a smart, beautiful, funny, and...very dead teenaged girl named Eleanor. Yeah, he's in love with a ghost. And before he knows what's happening, Greg finds himself at the wrong end of a history lesson when the town's past, and his own, threaten to pull the two of them apart permanently!"

This was fine. I liked the Peter Pan aspect to it with the shadow being its own character.

Greg is struggling right now his best friend has a new boyfriend and his father just moved in his girlfriend. The only person who Greg seems to be able to talk to is Eleanor the local ghost. This graphic novel was beautifully well done. I loved the monotone colors and I expressive art.

My Review:
This graphic novel was so gorgeous and adorable!! And definitely spooky in a beautiful way! A teen aged guy, born with no shadow, falls in love with a ghost girl in a large abandoned Victorian Mansion. And while this story has it’s supernatural elements and magic, I really loved how both characters are dealing with real world issues of new mom’s and changes in their lives (and after lives). And while our ghost girl has regrets from her life, she helps our no shadow guy not make the same mistakes she did.
All the while there is a menacing shadow in their midst who is worked up in messing with everything in town!
Cute read! Gorgeous illustrations! A great read to get into the oncoming spooky season!!

Cast No Shadow by Nick Tapalansky and Anissa Espinosa. First Second, 2017. 9781596438774. 220pp. Two things I immediately loved about this graphic novel: the ghostly “bees” (there are a few on the dedication page) and the grey tones done by Alex Eckman-Lawn, which reminded me of some of Andi Watson’s best black and white art. Greg doesn’t cast a shadow. He’s missing his mom and is more than a…

Book: Cast No Shadow - Nick Tapalansky & Anissa Espinosa
Genre: YA // Graphic Novel // Paranormal
Rating: ✩✩
I really wanted to love this graphic novel. The art is lovely, the story sounded sweet, and the slight spookiness reminded me a little bit of Anya's Ghost (which I adore). But no dice, friends. Cast No Shadow is all about a teenage boy who lacks a shadow, and who kind of feels like his town's next tourist attraction. He falls in love with a ghost girl who resides in the local haunted mansion. Between stress at home and being angry at people who trash his spectral gal's home, his shadow finally gets loose and starts wreaking havoc. While I enjoyed the art and the concept itself, it felt like nothing happened in this book. I was about two-thirds of the way through reading it before the shadow turned up and then as suddenly as it appeared, the action was over. The conflict lasted about five seconds. This isn't one I would read again, and I don't really recommend it unless you're only in it for the artwork.

 Credits
Where might we know you from? I've illustrated covers and mini-comics for Bee and Puppycat, Bravest Warriors, and Adventure Time!
What’s next for you? Let's see, I'm going to be a Story Revisionist on Young Justice season 3, my first graphic novel (written by Nick Tapalansky and published by First Second) will be released in the October of 2017, and I will also be figuring out what my next comic endeavor will be.
 Background
Who are your biggest writing/art influences? First and foremost, my friends and peers (both online and offline), Mike Mignola, Claire Wendling, J.C. Leyendecker, Akira Toriyama, and Chris Bachalo.
What is your dream job? I'm doing it! I work as a storyboard artist/revisionist for animation, and will be working on my own comic/creative projects as well soon.
    Advice
Best piece of career advice you’ve ever received? Don't give up. Ever. You may not meet your goal as quickly as you would like, but just be persistent. It will happen.
What advice would you give to creators just starting out? If you do one thing on any project, JUST FINISH. You will learn so much more from finishing than agonizing over making something perfect. Trust me, as a perfectionist, this was the hardest thing I had learn.
Tumblr media
 Industry
How long have you been working in comics? About five or six years, give or take.
How do you find freelance gigs? Tumblr, and twitter have given my artwork the most exposure I've ever had. I am contacted for different comic and illustration opportunities a lot because of those sites. My first comic cover and graphic novel gigs came about because some very kind and sweet friends sent my work to their editors.
Favorite convention? I would have to say SPX. It's probably the most progressive, friendly, and fun con I've ever visited.
