more azutara political marriage au thoughts
to everyone's horror toph and azula immediately got on like a house on fire. or rather, a palace on fire. they exchange the most scathing insults and get into illogical arguments that azula just cant help but try to win despite how purposefully stupid toph makes them. she's the only woman on the planet that can bait azula into a losing situation. its especially exacerbated by the fact that toph can very deftly play the noblewoman - much to azula's glee. it's a constant headache for everyone whenever toph rolls into the palace. no one knows if a bending duel will destroy half the palace foundations, a four day argument will start up rending azula useless, or if toph will sweet-talk her way into a truly terrible deal with the minister of foreign trade, again.
mai's role in the palace is unknown to literally everyone. she really has no reason for living in caldera, considering her father is a minister halfway across the country - and currently embroiled in a tense legal debate with the former 'new ozai.' every time someone asks what she does at caldera, she makes something up. so far shes been a seamstress, a cook, an assassin, a handmaiden, a farmer (this one was particularly stupid), an economic advisor, and her favourite; azula's personal nightmare. iroh officially settles on mai being a political advisor for the throne, despite the very obvious fact that she has never sat in on any meeting with the firelord.
the zuko/mai affair is the palace's favourite point of gossip. every argument is known about within minutes. it doesnt help that zuko's actual wife, toph, keeps helping them eavesdrop
azula used to do her morning training regiment in one of the public courts. very obliviously, she believed that the daily gaggle of serving girls who watched her were simply inspired by her dedication and strength, and so it was good for her image. katara immediately forced her to change to a different, more private bending court.

Katara objecting at Azula's wedding
My mind has been overtaken by this so it may slowly become a multi chapter fic (maybe after Avatar Azula is done?) but wanted to get some ideas out:
This is set in a post canon fic where Azula was in prison and Katara visited her until they became friends (and fell in love but were too afraid to tell each other)
When Azula is released, she wants to help the Fire Nation in some way and finds out that some important Earth Kingdom noble (maybe a prince?) is looking to marry and that they can use it to firm up the relationship between the Earth Kingdom and the Fire Nation -- (This would obviously have to mean that Kuei has forgiven her lol)
Katara is asked to be whatever the Fire Nation's version of Maid of Honour is and then it would basically become the film Made of Honor if anyone has seen that? If not, it's basically the Maid of Honour trying to get the bride to fall in love with them while supporting the wedding until he has to object
Eventually they would get to the wedding and Katara would have no choice but to object during the vows
Side note - I live for Sokka shipping Azutara so I think he'll be the first one she tells and he would help her with schemes to 'win' Azula
If anyone is interested in this, please let me know and I'll try and give it some more serious thought!
Also always welcome any ideas people have ❤️

I made it better
Tumblr media
I'm assuming this is because of me getting annoyed at Azutara shippers in my other blog and calling them and Tyzula fans the "Azula fandom's equivalent of Zutara and Zukka" XD
Anyways *grabs a megaphone and gets on a soap-box*
As a bisexual woman that would go crazy with joy if Azula was gay/bi, and that ships her with Ty Lee and Mai, and even Toph and Suki every now and then, let me make one thing very clear here: Azula DOES have a confirmed canon sexuality, and it's straight. Heterosexual. Likes guys and only guys. The idea that ANY gay ship was CANON in ATLA, a show made in 2005 by a kid's Network, is ridiculous.
Azula explicitly stated that she has tried to flirt with boys before and it never worked out because they are scared of her. She was jealous that boys were paying attention to Ty Lee - and while fanfic writers, and even I, like to say stuff like "Oh, you don't like them getting too close to your gilfriend, Azula?" it's VERY CLEAR that the show was going for the classic "Why do they like her and not ME?" aka she wanted attention from GUYS. She wanted to hook up with Chan, and immediately went for "Let's conquer the world together!" after one kiss. Even the up-coming Azula comic has her dreaming of a guy trying to flirt with her and calling her pretty.
For fuck's sake, Grey Delisle already admiting to voicing the scene between Azula and Zuko as if Azula was trying to seduce her own brother. Meanwhile, even though she likes Tyzula now, when asked about the ship her first reaction was the same as the one every actor, writer and/or showrunner had to hearing about popular gay ships: "I did not see that coming."
It might seem surreal nowadays that the Network let the show get away with incest bait but gay characters were out of question, but that's what happened because, surprise surprise, homophobia was still going strong. Hell, it's still going strong TODAY.
Lots of Nickelodeon shows from the 90's and early/mid 2000's tried to get away with implying or flat out saying "This character is gay" and it ALWAYS resulted in banned episodes, some of which became lost media because the Network was just that desperate to bury any evidence of it to avoid controversy. Even characters that never had any love interests ever were assumed to be straight - not as in "treat them as being straight unless we say otherwise" but in "They are straight because that's the only thing allowed to exist in kid's media." There was no "otherwise" to be heard of. Fitting for years that followed the policy literally called "DON'T ASK, DON'T TELL."
THAT was the general sentiment around homosexuality at the time, especially on TV (KIDS TV, I remind you): pretend you don't know that's a thing.
Even The Legend Of Korra, that parts of the fandom still pretends did anything for gay representation, had the creators (the same who made ATLA) that they never even bothered to ask Nickelodeon if they could Korrasami happen, and thus kept the whole love triangle, with the girls fighting over a GUY, going. It wasn't until the very end that they had the guts to ask "Can we make them hold hands in the finale?" and Nick said "Sure, the final season will basically not be aired on TV anyways." Bryke even had to state ONLINE that "Yes, they are a couple." Only THEN, with the positive response from audiences, that neither the writers nor the Network had thought could ever gain any sympathy for the show, did they make Korra and Assami have an actual relationship in the Korra comics.
Do these guys sound like the type that would leave a character's sexuality up for debate or even try to write a gay couple into the show IN 2005, years before Korra was allowed to get away with a slight hint of gayness that to be explained on Twitter?
They didn't make Azula's attempts to win guys over fail to show she was a gay teen trying too hard to be something she was not, her envy that Ty Lee was getting a ton of attention from boys while she wasn't was meant to be taken as EXACTLY that, and no cutesy moment between her and her friends was meant to be taken as anything other just gals being pals.
We can, and should, point out that it is unfair that gay relationships were treated as "too adult" while straight romances weren't. We can change any character's sexuality in fanfics. We can ship whatever the hell we like. But claiming Azula was EVER meant to be seen as anything other than a 100% straight girl that just sucked at flirting and thus was struggling to get a boyfriend is just a flat out lie.
She's not bisexual. She's not a lesbian. Her sexuality was not "left up to debate" because THERE WASN'T SUPPOSED TO BE A DEBATE!
Again, I would love a bisexual Azula (provided that wasn't handled by people like Yang and Bryke, who see her as nothing more than an ableist stereotype), but let's not kid ourselves here.
Nickelodeon is not our "ally", they're a company that wants your money. Bryke, by their own admission, were not revolutionaries who pushed for gay representation and were ready to give up on the idea of same-sex relationship with no resistence if the Network told them "no, only straight romances allowed". Korra was no Steven Universe or even Adventure Time, it was basically Disney with it's 50th "first" gay character that gets five seconds of screentime. Azula's sexuality absolutely WAS confirmed and it is (sadly for me) heterosexual.
And to the people that claim to love headcanons for bisexual Azula, but still insist I should only ship her with women, or make her strongly prefer women, or only have had bad experiences with men and positive ones with women, otherwise she'll be "basically straight": your biphobia is showing, stop hating on bi women everytime they shatter your ilusion that we're just confused/in denial and will eventually realize we're actually lesbians.

Hey what are your avatar otps besides azulaang?
oh umm… I wouldn’t call them OTPs since that is exclusively Azulaang, but my bi Azula headcanon lives in a variety of ships. Azutara, Azuki, Maizula… not Tyzula tbh because that feels like… imbalanced? and not Tophzula because they are menace-besties but not romantic, but with any of the other girls I think it could be great. Azutara has the enemies to lovers from Azulaang but with more spice and less forgiveness, they‘d tear eachother apart first but that makes it even sweeter if they eventually fall in love. Azuki is kind of different because Suki is more rational and holds less of an emotional grudge, it‘d be difficult for Azula to earn her trust but she would not be openly hostile to her unless necessary. I imagine this one could only happen if Azula is already in the middle or post redemption though, because Suki would not put up with any EtL shit. I guess that is exactly why it intrigues me too, I feel Suki would be more willing to give Azula a chance, more than Katara for example, but at the same time it would be impossibly hard to win her trust and I‘d like to see if Zula can manage it. Lastly Maizula, and I prefer this one over Tyzula because I feel Mai is more capable of holding her own against Azula in a relationship. It’s a complicated version of childhood friends to lovers and I‘m kind of here for it. No idea how it would work though lol.
Aside from Azula ships, I think Zutara is pretty cool and works well alongside Azulaang. Kataang is kinda cool in theory too, but I don’t like shipping Aang with anyone except Azula, it feels wrong 🤷‍♂️ The only other Aang ship I can imagine liking is Zukaang, but I don’t talk about it much.
Oh and I have to give a shoutout to Sokkla, I don’t particularly vibe with it but they’re the sister ship to Azulaang and I do see the potential of the two genius strategists, so if Aang didn’t exist I would definitely ship Sokkla instead. Nothing but love to the comrades over there. 🫶🏼
edit: totally forgot this but I actually also love Tylaang aka Ty-Lee and Aang, it just has absolutely no fandom so it’s hard to get the ball rolling. I just feel they would be such a wholesome bubbly cute ship, and I dig the Ty-Lee airbender ancestry theory so she‘d love to learn all about airbender customs and they‘d have so much fun and probably a huge family 😅 anyway I think party of why I ship this is just because I think these two deserve the world and it represents my wish for them to be totally carefree and happy. you can also add Azula and make this a throuple, I think that would work because you have Tyzula as the polar opposites and Aang in the middle to bridge the gap.
speaking of throuples I enjoy the idea of… Azutaraang? (Azula/Katara/Aang) but it is very difficult to make work. The only way I can see it is if Azula and Katara fall in love first because nothing good could come of them fighting over Aang. or maybe I could see like a stranded on a deserted island AU where the three of them have to work together and learn to rely on eachother… idk, difficult but not impossible.
Oh and I love Zuki too (Zuko x Zuki) …damn I guess I do have quite a few non-Azulaang ships. anyway this is essentially a bodyguard AU and it’s actually my favorite Zuko ship (sorry Zutara) not much to say about it cuz I’ve barely engaged with it, but I love the idea and think they would just work really well together. I also can see this as a throuple with Sokka again. I don’t really vibe with Zukka on their own but if you add Suki then I love it, because Suki deserves two good boys and it’s more fun for everyone involved if those two good boys are in love with eachother too.
final edit hopefully: Sokka Azula Aang is good too, for the same reasons listed for Zuko Suki Sokka, I swear that’s it now. goodbye lol.

How’s it going at @waterfire1848 ! I’ve got another question for ya. This one is a more abstract ATLA question.
Suppose one night you are randomly Isekaid into either Ozai or Ursa on the night of Azulon’s assignation, coming into existence after Azulon is assassinated but before Ursa leaves. How would you influence the FN royal family, the Fire Nation, and the world at large? What changes would you make to canon? I’m curious!
It's going good! How are you?
Ohhhhhh!!!!
I love this ask!!
I'll start with (serious) Ozai. I'd work with Ursa. If she has the ability to murder Azulon without being caught then I think she could be a vital ally. She mainly cares about (not bringing the comics in just the show) her children, so as long as no harms comes to them then Ursa won't do anything to me. Plus, her being around helps keep up public appearances. I would still be Firelord but now I have Ursa to deal with the children. The FN royal family would probably be more me and Azula doing our own thing and Ursa and Zuko on their own kinda split but living in the same area. If I wake up as Ozai with the knowledge I do know, I’d also destroy Aang’s iceberg and take Katara, Sokka, Toph and Suki to join the FN army.
(Funny) Ozai. I’d throw myself off a cliff. Azula and Zuko grow up happy with Ursa and the war would probably still continue but Azula and Zuko would probably have a stronger relationship since Ozai isn’t around to drive them apart and now Ursa is around to help them repair their relationship.
Ursa. Two options. 1. Either take Azula and Zuko with me and raise them in the WT so Azutara and Zukka can happen but also they can grow up away from Ozai’s abuse and safe. If Zuko and Azula aren’t around to help Ozai then the war will probably be over before Sozin’s Comet. It would probably end on the DOBS. And, as Ursa, I’d go to Ozai’s cell afterwards and beat him with a bat.
2. Kill Ozai too. Once I’m in power, I would help Zuko and Azula with therapy and actually paying attention to Azula. Zuko would never be banished and he and Azula would have a much better relationship. So if they stay on the FN side then the FN is winning the war (cause I will die with that headcanon that Zuko and Azula would be an unstoppable force together) and if they join the Avatar then I still believe the war would be over earlier.

Hello @balanceoflightanddark how are you doing?
I’ve got a few questions (and also comments!) about your story “The monsters we create”. (Which is really good so far btw) I hope that is okay?
Why does everyone in the Fire Nation have a warriness and fear of Azula and not just the citizens of the other (formerly warring) nations? Comparatively, Azula’s own actions on the war were less (outright) destructive than say Iroh or Zuko. She never burned down a village (Zuko) or subjected a megalopolis to a grueling 600 day siege (Iroh). When she took over a city, it was bloodless and via espionage. She’d didn’t do so out of charity mind you, Azula just saw other alternate means to win the war. Still, people are judged by actions.
I guess what I’m asking is, if Iroh and the White Lotus have been spreading propaganda (making use of Azula’s breakdown and her stay in the “asylum”) to further destroy her reputation and secure Zuko’s reign?
I’m wondering about the population levels of the Western Earth Kingdom in your story. Yu Dao specifically. I removed reading somewhere that most of the Fire National population had been kicked out of their conquered territories following the war’s conclusion (at least I think it was your story?). The lone exception being Yu Dao and it’s surrounding lands.
What are the population levels of Yue Dao. Does it have a majority Fire National population? Or just a polarity? Or are Earth Kingdomers (best Demonym I could come up with) the majority still. Has a hybrid Fire Nation/Earth kingdom culture spawned in Yu Dao?
Full disclosure but I’ve never read any of the comics. The only info I know them is either from wiki or excerpts online. Coincidentally, most of those experts were from your own post on the matter! As well as a few from others that discussed how Azula’s raw power levels have increased significantly. With instant lighting and all that. As well as other examples.
But from these excerpts, Zuko is a rather poor leader. And an even worse sibling. What with going to Ozai for advice and all. Also leaving his sister to sequester in an abusive “asylum”.
But I do have a question for your story from this. If Zuko is so determined to hold onto Yu Dao, it must have a not insignificant population of Fire Nationals in it. Is Zuko trying to intergrate the Colby into the Fire Nation directly? Like is he trying to establish a sort of Imperial Federation? Like some British politicians suggested in the 19th and 20th centuries. Or is Zuko just being stubborn?
Speaking of the citizens of Yu Dao. I like this new take on Kori Marishta. I’m digging the archery! I also like secret air bender Maina. I’m excited to learn more about her people and their connection to Moth. Hopefully the two prove to be less…treacherously inclined than Azula’s two previous friends. Though with Azula beginning to abandon the imperialist mindset of her father, that will hopefully be easier.
I also concur with Kyoshi in her little talk with Aang. Azula is a bit like Yun. Both prodigies, who at their full strength outclass pretty much everyone in their elements. They had both been betrayed by Guardians Jianzhu for Yun and Ozai/Ursa for Azula (I’d say that Iroh abandoned Azula as well, but that would imply he was ever actually their for her in the first place). As well as been betrayed by friends (though I’d argue that Yun betrayal by his friend was more his perception than truth, but Azula was in actuality betrayed by friends (and brother).
In regards to pairings in the story, I noticed you tagged it Katara/Aang. I also remember seeing you in a reblog post to a tag by @waterfire1848 that you also liked Azutara and Azulaang as ships as well. What do you think of the Azula/Katara/Aang ship? It it possible? I know it’s unlikely, but a shipper has to ship, no?
Either way I’m happy with any the story develops! Though part of me does wonder if all the characters will end up eaten by Godzilla.
————————————————————————
Those were the last of my questions about your story. But I also noticed several of your other post mention that you are fan of Mass Effect. I am as well, and I’ve had a little plot idea regarding the series and everyone’s favorite Firebender. And I’d like to run it by you.
Say when Azula is in the “asylum” there is some sort of dimensional disturbance that takes her out of the hellish place. This exposes her to element zero. Making Azula a biotic as well. This disturbance sends Azula to the planet of Mindoir. Where she is found and picked up by a local family. A family by the sir name “Shepard”. Over the next two or three years Azula becomes closer to this family. They help her deal with her past (her guilt and feelings of betrayal) and Azula comes to know what a true familial bond is like.
Everything is great, until Batarian slavers arrive in the Skillan Verge. Azula tried her hardest, even manages to defeat quite a few of the slavers. But it’s not enough and her new family is cruelly taken from her. Azula is only saved by a passing alliance patrol (colonist background)
She is recruited into the navy under admiral David Anderson. Who would quickly become a father figure to her. Azula’s own “uncle Iroh” in a sense.
Azula would likely also follow the Ruthless service history, and become the butcher of Torfan.
But how do you think the story of Mass Effect would play out with Azula Shepard? Would she save the council of leave it to die? Who would she romance (if anyone)? Would she choose either control, destroy, or integrate? Would she choose to save or destroy the collector base? Etcetera What do you think would happen?
Hey, thanks for asking.
The first question is that the perception of the Fire Nation towards Azula, at least from Zuko and Iroh's point of view, is very skewed. She's very non-traditionalist in terms of being a Princess that's accomplished so much and was made the heir apparent to the throne when usually it's the male royals who could lay claim to that. Not to mention in a society that's dominated by social darwinism (weakness being frowned upon) and her breakdown, she's not going to be very highly regarded among the elite since she's got some "flaw" that they're going to use. Plus given how much hold the role of Fire Lord has over the populace (we see how much presence Ozai has over commoners with building huge ass statues and plastering his face all over academies), the fear and hesitation that Fire Lord Zuko would have about Azula is going to be reflected in at least some portion of the populace that's conditioned to live under such a rule.
Doesn't mean she's universally disliked though. We're going to get more Fire Nation characters both from the military and the populace as the story goes along that not everyone really buys Zuko's word. The next arc in particular.
As for Yu Dao, I'd describe it as a fairly sizable population. It has been hinted at in the past for being one of the origin points for Republic City, and in the comics, its influence and economic value was enough to prompt Zuko to make a bid for them, particularly in the face of Kuei's aggression. Which we see in The Monsters We Create. So I could imagine the colonies (Yu Dao in particular) having a fairly sizable population using those indicators we have in canon.
The population I imagine would also be an even mix between Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom. I mean they've been there for 100 years, so it's likely there would've been plenty of intermarrying and offspring that comes with any clash of cultures like in real life. Plus, I think it would be a good way of showing how the Earth Kingdom would've fared under Fire Nation rule. Mainly with the Fire Nation on top and hoarding the wealth while the Earth Kingdom citizens get scraps.
In regards to Zuko, his main argument about hanging on to the colonies was keeping the economic value for the Fire Nation. I could see him deescalate and allow the colonies to secede, but mainly as client states in order to keep the ties with the Fire Nation strong. Mainly because...I don't think his arc was complete yet in the series. He's getting there, but I don't think he was fully redeemed yet. At this point, he is trying to do the right thing, but like Azula, he's going at this from a background of Fire Nation superiority. Even if he knows they did wrong, he doesn't quite know how to...well "be good". Hell, it's something he pointed out to himself with his "WHY AM I SO BAD AT BEING GOOD?!" Trust me, as much I don't like him, I'm not going to keep him in this state though. It's just a bit of a work in progress. He'll get better as the story goes along.
Anyways, thanks for my take on Kori. I do genuinely like her (Not just because she tried to kill Comics!Zuko) and want to do some stuff with her and Maina (I actually did base her off a character from the Godzilla anime trilogy where she's one of the twin priestesses of Mothra). I see them as a fresh start for Azula. As for Kyoshi, I wanted her to bring Yun up since...well she did have experience with people like Azula in the past and there's no way she wanted the same thing to happen twice.
I'm...also not aware of Azula/Katara/Aang. I mean, I have read fics where either Aang or Katara gets demonized for the ship to work, but I don't think that's fair for them. I just included Aang/Katara cause I figured it would be important to their character.
As for Godzilla...next chapter is not going to be pretty.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh hell, people are recognizing I'm a fan of Mass Effect.
I could definitely see her being a human supremacist at first. I mean having her have history with the Batarians is a really bad first impression. Plus she already has a bit of a ruthless streak to her. But I don't think she'd be too...cold-hearted either. She's efficient in series and it's not really like her to go execute enemy combatants (she did take the Kyoshi Warriors and the survivors of the Black Sun Invasion prisoner after all). Plus I could see her trying to be cordial with the Council ("In our country, we say hello") until they start getting under her skin.
That being said, I'm not sure if she'd let the Council die or not. On the one hand, it would put humanity in a better position to rule the galaxy. On the other hand...by this point, she'd know that the Reapers ARE a thing so I'm not sure if she'd want to attract scrutiny to the Alliance by making a blatant power grab with those things lurking about. Maybe make the Council in debt to her and make them hold an "IOU" once the Reapers come around. Or she could believe that a human-led Citadel would be more effective at preparing for a Reaper Invasion. There's arguments for both sides and it would depend on how far along her character development is. Personally, I'd think she'd see the value in having strong alien allies since she did rely on the Dai Li in her takeover of Ba Sing Se so...maybe leaning towards sparing the Council? But that's me being charitable.
Romance: Miranda. There's no competition. At all. Both are conditioned supporters of human supremacy from childhood and being conditioned to strive towards perfection. Both are professional and keep their problems close. And both have issues with their families. If they don't see the similarities then I don't know what else to say.
Alternatively: Garrus. I mean, both have black-and-white morality worldviews and were raised in militant societies. Not to mention either one is willing to get dirty if the situation calls for it. I could see the two bond over that sort of thing.
I...might have to go into a more detailed post since this one has gone on long enough, but thanks for the ask!

POV: The Fire Princess, who you are bethrothed to, just made her fashionably late appearance at the royal ball...
This is a shameless Royalty/arranged marriage Azutara AU
The plot: The situation between the four nations is... Tense, to say the least. So much so that comes the time to seal an alliance with royal weddings. The water tribes of the South and North, conspiring together, quickly wed off Prince Sokka to an Earth Kingdom princess. The fire nation is now stuck: they have two water princesses to marry, and only one male heir. Or... Are they?
When her bethrodal with the fire nation heir is announced, Katara, closeted lesbian, despairs. Only, at the party thrown down South to celebrate her engagement, she discover her future fiance is... The most drop dead gorgeous woman she's ever seen. And that my dudes, is why the gays always win.
Little tidbit of info: katara sent a necklace to her bethroded as a diplomatic gesture, because i want to mix up traditions a bit more. That adds to the surprise when Azula shows up wearing it

The Guru Re-watch
I enjoyed this episode a lot more than the last one for 2 key reasons
DANGEROUS LADIES
I've calmed down a tiny little bit from how mad I am about Jet, I just have to move on (but I never truly will)
Let's talk about Zuzu first. I don't have much to say about him in this episode (for once) other than that I agree with @theowritesfiction that Positive! Zuko is unsettling. Reminds me of the brainwashed Joo Dees. I don't like this Zuko.
Oh wait, let me make everything about Azula like I always do real quick - this version of Zuko isn't the real Zuko just like Canadian! Azula wouldn't be the "real" (or at least not the healthiest fullest version) of Azula (& nice teashop Zuko & Canadian over apologetic Azula are very comparable in my opinion.)
Anyway.
I loved Sokka & Hakoda's soft interactions in this episode.
Tumblr media
[id: Hakoda & Sokka hugging. Sokka is smiling]
I really love the moment when Hakoda says "Sokka, you don't have to prove anything to me. I'm already proud of you and I've always known you're a great warrior."
Also, we've got Aang & his Guru journey learning about chakras. I've always found all the chakra talk a bit confusing but fascinating, so here's a piece of the transcript partially for my own context.
Aang: So chakras are pools of spiraling energy in our bodies?
Pathik: Exactly. If nothing else were around, this creek would flow pure and clear. However, life is messy, and things tend to fall in the creek. And then what happens?
Aang The creek can't flow?
Pathik Yes. But, if we open the ponds between the pools ... [He removes moss blocking the exit for the water.]
Aang: The energy flows! [The water that was blocked by the moss becomes clear. Aang and Pathik smile at each other.]
Next, we learn about the four chakras & watch Aang open them through visions & meditation (& onion & banana juice.) Aang struggles to overcome his shame for burning Katara, his guilt over leaving the world behind, & his fear of facing Ozai. The visions are an interesting exploration of Aang's internal struggles & we do see a lot of growth from how he was at the start of the series - largely in denial about anything he might need to overcome & reluctant to acknowledge or embrace his responsibility. Aang has grown immensely as a character & this is a good episode for him....Until we get to the part where I have some Controversial Tm opinions.
Pathik: The Thought Chakra is located at the crown of the head. It deals with pure cosmic energy and is blocked by earthly attachment.
Aang: What? Why would I let go of Katara? I love her!
Pathik: Learn to let her go, or you cannot let the pure cosmic energy flow in from the universe.
Much like "The Fortuneteller" this is a strong setup for Aang to overcome his unreciprocated feelings for Katara and the show takes it in another direction. I would have really liked to see this show subvert expectations & show Aang overcoming his feelings for Katara. That's just how I feel. It's a disappointment to me that he just leaves when he's so close to unlocking all the chakras.
Anyway, Katara!!! She is so cute in this episode. I mean, always, but like - she takes Momo to tea! She asks for a table for 2! She jokes during a war meeting that they could send Momo to do some damage because he's knocking over the models! I just adore her.
Katara also recognizes Azula from looking into her eyes & I'm not kidding - we get a Zoom in of Azula's eyes sparkling, then a close-up of Katara's shocked expression of recognition. Before anyone forgets that this is an Azutara blog, I'm collecting those breadcrumbs where I can!
Also, this episode is great because we get to see Azula's genius & devious plans unfolding & we get to see the Dangerous Ladies being an iconic trio. +1000 iconic behavior points each for the Dangerous Ladies. (also I am not even remotely keeping track of these points anymore I'll have to count them up at the end so it'll be interesting to see who wins lol!) We even get some domestic Dangerous Ladies content with them talking & cleaning their Kyoshi Warrior makeup.
Tumblr media
[id: Mai with makeup smeared around her eyes halfway through cleaning her Kyoshi Warrior makeup]
I just love Azula, Mai & Ty Lee so much.
That is all I have for this episode!

katara 💙
Kal thanks so much for sending me a character! ☺️
ships i like with this character:
Z U T A R A: my main ship for katara! their relationship development was so compelling and realistic (i.e. not just taking words at face value, but actually putting effort into actions to show the other person that you're remorseful.) i love how it is handled with such respect for katara's autonomy and her feelings. how not once is katara guilt-tripped or given excuses. how they were there for each other in their most critical moments and provided non-judgmental support. how they trust each other with their literal lives and were willing to die for each other. how katara trusts and believes in his goodness with such conviction, that she ultimately wins him the throne. i'm gonna cut it off here before i go into zk brainrot lol.
jintara: i like this ship because i think her and katara have a lot of similarities wrt their personalities. i also really like them as an ot3 with zuko (jinkotara) because they both canonically love tea, so why not throw in their tea-serving bf? also i see both of their loves languages as physical touch, so i can see them having fun teasing zuko, and doing gestures like jin did when she ruffled his hair.
maitara: i like the contrast of this ship. katara is openly warm and affectionate, whereas mai is a bit more reserved. in a post-war setting, i could see katara encouraging mai to be more assertive and expressive, kind of challenging the things she learned growing up. and i think mai would remind katara to take time to actually relax and have fun. i also like maikotara, but not in a fully romantic way. more like.... mai is katara's gf and zuko is katara's bf. and maiko are ... just friends that are here for the vibe, you know?
harutara: ok their sunset convo was kinda romantic ... or was it just me? i love how katara even tho he doesn't know her, is able to inspire him to push back against the "no earth bending" rule (even if it backfired because of that snitching old man.) katara is really humble and she doesn't really take credit for all that she does. i love haru's line "it wasn't the coal, it was you, katara." i thought it was cute when he asked katara to come back with them. and then, the next time haru sees the gaang, he again talks about how katara inspired him. i love a good ship where the boy is in complete awe of the girl.
jiangtara: gay people.
yuetara: the moon/ocean imagery just does it for me. i love the spiciness and potential drama of katara realizing that she likes girls when she falls for her brother's girlfriend. and the angst of her feeling that lost love once yue becomes the moon, having never told her how she felt (for obvious reasons.)
azutara: honestly, two pretty girlfriends. dassit.

Do you have any Azutara head-canons or AUs?
Here’s an Au where I completely ignore the comics and Lok LMAOO
YES i do have HC'S (btw these aren’t in order)
Katara would be the one to be most supportive of Azula, and her most frequent visitor when they threw her in the… y’know.
Azula HATED Katara at first, She hated that this was the person to defeat her. She hated the fact that Katara always made time in her busy schedule to visit her. She hated that Katara was being kind to her. She hated that she was so sure that her brother was likely the one to convince katara to do this. But never once did she tell her to go away, did she try to push her away with insults? Yes. Did it work? No.
Katara only chose to help Azula because she witnessed her Mental breakdown, and it didn’t help that she knew of Zuko’s and Azula’s Homelife.
Katara was the first person to realize that Azula lost her bending(Headcanon of mine that Azula lost her bending for a few years after her mental breakdown)
It took them both years to realize they had feelings for each other and a few months to actually act on them.
Katara would often gush about Azula to Zuko, while he braided her hair. While Azula simply told her best friend, who is toph, that Katara was attractive and Toph made crude jokes that made the princess laugh her ass off.
After being released from her cell, Azula lived in the South Pole for a year, to her surprise she wasn’t beaten to death for what she has done to them in the past.
Katara and Azula often can’t sleep well, even before they get together if they are in the same place. They would end in each other’s arms for comfort.
Katara is able to read Azula like an open book, the same is for Azula.
Azula is the most awkward flirt Katara’s ever seen and she absolutely loves that about her. Azula gets flustered with a single compliment out of Katara’s mouth. Toph tried to do what Katara did and gave Azula a simple compliment, but all Azula did was call her a dumbass.
Azula is the most physically affectionate of the two.
Azula isn’t overly protective of Katara knowing what she is capable of but the same could not be said about Katara. If someone just gives them a look, she will take them down with her words, Azula loves it.
Katara is the one to encourage Azula to give her mother a chance.
When Azula and Katara play Pai sho, Azula does not care if the woman is her partner she will destroy her. Katara on the other hand doesn’t understand the game and somehow wins 90% of the time. Since then Azula swears Katara is not only a master in water bending but in strategic skill.
Katara is horrible at making Tea. Azula never tells her, when Iroh went to their house and was offered tea by Katara, he almost spat it out in an instant if it weren’t for Azula who was giving him a death glare. Azula refuses to admit that she loves Tea, just not katara’s.
Azula doesn’t mind if she’s a little or a small spoon, Katara usually prefers being big spoon.
Azula and Katara are both morning people! Even if they usually have all-nighters.
Katara practically babysits every time her girlfriend and Toph are in the same room
When they get arguments they both make each other Tea, sit in silence, then begin talking about what and why the topic upset them.
Azula regains her bending when she is in her late twenties but doesn’t use it unless necessary, Mostly uses it to show off to Katara and ZuZu.
Katara still gets nightmares of Azula screaming out flames, And Azula still gets nightmares of her time in that cell. They don’t talk about it until one of them begins shouting in their nightmares.
Azula asked for the permission of Hakoda and Sokka to marry Katara. Sokka knowing how much the woman changed gladly accepted her into the family. Hakoda and Azula got high together and Azula revealed how much she cared about Katara, and Hakoda gave her his blessing. Unknown to Azula, Katara asked for Zuko’s and Toph’s blessing, obviously, Zuko broke out into tears while Toph punched him and told him to get a hold of himself.
Aang officiated their wedding!! Zuko walked Azula down the Aisle and Hakoda walked Katara down the aisle as well.
Since Azula was the first to get married, Ursa often nagged her about wanting Grandchildren. It usually went like this “Mother I am a lesbian” “You can always adopt!” And they have three kids: Oldest is Lu Ten(Water bender), Youngest is Kya(Fire bender), and Eldest is Mira(Earth bender) :D
Katara and Azula get married in the Southern Water Tribe and just throw a party in the fire nation, much to Ursa’s dismay.
Since Zuko got his own dragon, Azula was jealous, so Katara gifted her a Polar bear dog, which was named Fikhar. Which Azula adored from the beginning
When Azula went to the southern water tribe to visit her girlfriend/wife she offered Hakoda and Sokka advice, which they almost always took.
Azula and Katara raised their kids quite oddly, 6 months in the southern pole and the other six months in the Fire Nation. This went on for ten years before they settled down in the southern Water tribe.
Azula was the cool aunt who gave Izumi all these gifts and candies while Katara was the one who told Izumi not to burn down the courtyard or play with her mother’s knives.

I've read that it's your sister's wedding so congratulations! I wanted to ask you for an Azutara prompt, of course do it when you can.
It would be for the "Footballer! Azula Cheerleader! Katara AU" series, I love it by the way: After winning a rugby match, Azula with courage and asks Katara out on a date to the cinema.
PS: Could you please add some clichés like Azula yawning to put her arm around Katara's shoulders, Azula giving Katata her jacket...
Thank you:-)
Thank you, the wedding went really well!
Hope you enjoy your prompt, really enjoyed writing it!

A piece for Azutara ~
Tumblr media
She couldn’t help raising her brows when water transformed into solid ice in front of her naked eye. The edges of the lake crackled and fell silent as frost crept onto the banks. Even with her own warmth assured, she didn’t expect their surroundings to drop so quickly, as if the waterbender’s finesse had commanded every other element. Remarkable.
Her next exhale was visible, so small and withheld that it left in a wisp. It was how she knew Katara had stolen her breath - again.
“I promise, it’s firm enough to step on.” A boot measured the thickness with a tap, then she boarded the glassine surface with a satisfied hmph. It slipped Azula’s mind to peel her eyes away and pretend to scout the woodlands, fold her arms, sigh, anything that feigned emotional distance. She watched Katara’s hand move across her sole, sculpting from residue, setting down a knife-like edge with the clink of a cup on a saucer. She repeated with her other foot, straightening on thin slivers of ice like it was easy, hands on hips. “See? I told you we came prepared. Now it’s your turn.”
The princess unstuck her fists from her sides, taking the arm. Not a moment later her feet started to slide apart, grating on the only barrier between steadying hands and a splintering fall. “Oh. I didn’t expect - this is much more...”
“I’ll take care of that.” She gripped her waist, and Azula clutched back. “Just hold on tight.” With something of a kick that never landed, they were spurred into motion. The princess started with a hwah! sound, heart hammering even when coasting along her side, even pressed to the furs Katara was bundled in. Or her thoughts were flying, pulse singing, for another reason outside it all.
Black and dark brown hair fluttered behind them. The wind was hardly biting, jades and colored spots of flowers blurring into one line, pitting a sensation like summertime whisked out from under their feet. No chance. If there was any promise between them - and there were many - it was to snatch out sunlight when it broke the clouds, trap fleeting moments like lightning bugs in clear jars. Until hope spilled into her world, and Katara along with it, Azula learned to heal... and to her, love was an endless summer. One long overdue.
They drifted farther apart, round after round scaling the rink until they were only joined by their hands. Azula found her footing, prodigious learner that she was.
“Hey, you’re getting the hang of it!” Katara’s eyes glowed. She glowed.
With a surge of confidence, the princess dragged her heels, hooking an arm around the other girl and pulling with all her strength. They veered left with a giggling fit, arms locked as they circled to a halt. Dizzied heads were a small price to pay.
“That... was... fun!” Katara gasped out. Finally at rest, she brushed back the uneven cut of Azula’s hair, drinking her in. The sheared ends had regrown quickly, still somewhat mismatched; in just a few months, her reflection wasn’t in complete tatters.
“Next time, I’m taking you to walk over hot coals.” Azula smirked, skates moving in an intuitive waltz. “Or to set off fireworks. As many as we can manage before our hands are covered in ash. Isn’t this the theme we’re following - showing off?”
“Oh, I’d like to see you try and outdo me.” She leaned in, the warm press of lips to Azula’s forehead releasing butterflies in her stomach. Katara’s voice hovered above her ear, teasing, “Unless we’re talking about hot looks. Then I’ll have to step down, hm?”
“Don’t be ridiculous.” She scoffed, a little flushed, throwing back a flippant hand. Venom seeped into her tone out of instinct, but the words were anything but. “You’re the most beautiful girl I’ve ever set eyes on. It would be an insult to doubt my tastes.”
It flew out before she caught herself. Azula’s eyes snapped open, red-faced. “I... er- I meant it!”
Katara smiled. Before she could stutter her way back onto her dispassionate pedestal, a loud crack rang in the quiet. Their eyes shot straight down. Fissures spiderwebbed from under Azula, the ice tinged with heat. Oh...
Flustered, to the point of softening the ice underfoot. Azula could only fling her head up to Katara’s, pale with dread, lungs braced and teeth clicked shut for the cold shock. I’m sorry!
When the ice gave way and they tumbled, her eyes squeezed closed - don’t look, don’t look - no light or even afterimages allowed to pass through. Weightlessness stretched out for an impossible length of time... floating, hearing and seeing nothing, until her ears pricked. A voice.
“It’s okay. I got us. We’re safe.”
What? She loosened the death grip around her knees, squinting. It was dark.
“Azula? We’re okay. I promise.”
Katara, hand in hers - the first one she’d held after days imprisoned in the ward, blood pooling at her elbows. Her grip had been an iron clamp; they never doubted each other’s strength.
Azula looked up, head whipping around until what she was seeing made sense, logic falling into place. Air.
“You didn’t think you would drown with a waterbender at your side, did you?” A chuckle. Her palms were flat and spread, weaving in delicate circles. The pocket around them was held in place, walled on all sides by a swirling current.
Azula made no effort to contain her awe. The underside of the lake was striped azure blue, its bottom glinting in weak rays of sunlight. Shadows of darting fish crossed her periphery. She looked down at their clothes. Dry as bone.
“You know what?” Katara appraised their situation, hands dropping into her lap. Of course she could hold the bubble like it was an afterthought. Of course. “I think we found a great place to cuddle. Play Pai Sho, have a picnic...”
Azula couldn’t help but smile, scooting forwards as the world wobbled. She wasn’t afraid. Not with her. “Okay, fine. You’ve done your showing off. You win.” She pressed against Katara’s side, nuzzling into her neck. “My turn.”
