Running a Thousand Miles to Freedom or, The Escape of William and Ellen ...
Preface: HAVING heard while in Slavery that "God made of one blood all nations of men," and also that the American Declaration of Independence says, that "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these, are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness;" we could not understand by what right we were held as "chattels." Therefore, we felt perfectly justified in undertaking the dangerous and exciting task of "running a thousand miles" in order to obtain those rights which are so vividly set forth in the Declaration.
I beg those who would know the particulars of our journey, to peruse these pages.
This book is not intended as a full history of the life of my wife, nor of myself; but merely as an account of our escape; together with other matter which I hope may be the means of creating in some minds a deeper abhorrence of the sinful and abominable practice of enslaving and brutifying our fellow-creatures.

My father's side is #IndigenousAmerican #AngloSaxon #BlackAmerican descended from slaves stolen from #SierraLeone & #GuineaBissau. Somewhere in his father's blood is #Basque, & his mother's #Indonesian but listed as negro for her dark skin. That side of the family is middle-class, & recent generations are from N. East of the U.S. My father moved to California in his early 20s. My mother & Grammy was born in LA. My Grammy is 41% #Irish, 16% #French, 34% is #WestAfrican, 5% #Congolese. The rest is traces of #Choctaw. I got a DNA break down for her. Her mother's family was from Oklahoma. My mom's dad was from South Carolina, his mom was #Cherokee & #Black descended from slaves. His father was full Irish. People generally think i belong to their people unless they're very light or very dark. Ive been pegged for Columbian. I get all the various South American & afro Caribbean, also Black & various Asian & the southeast Asians think I belong to them too. In Germany, tho cabinets get locked. In Uganda I couldnt get service outside the resort without help. I'm incredibly into where politics, culture & economics collide. Living in #ambiguous skin & with my upbringing is helpful in this. Im able to slip in on conversations that are often so revealing or that they never would say if they could tell I'm 'Black' I lean in my economic views. Which leads into my biggest problem as a mixed girl, other than my hair. It's the expectation of experience, tastes, methods of moving forward socially. Lately, I've been getting this litmus test as I've been stepping into a new social group of black folks. One of my favorite literary giants, Mother Maya Angelou was an American poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist. She published seven autobiographies, three books of essays, several books of poetry, and is credited with a list of plays, movies, and television shows spanning over 50 years. She received dozens of awards and more than 50 honorary degrees.

The brilliant writer, editor and scholar - who transitioned in 2019 - is revered for her ability to examine #BlackAmerican identity through sharp, spellbinding prose—often focusing on the experiences of #Blackwomen. “One of the goals of our stamp program is to raise awareness and celebrate the people who represent the very best of our nation,” says Pritha Mehra, chief information officer and executive vice president of the Postal Service, in a statement. “... We honor Toni Morrison with one more tribute—our new stamp that will be seen by millions and forever remind us of the power of her words and the ideas she brought to the world.” The new stamp features a portrait of Morrison that photographer Deborah Feingold took during a 1997 cover shoot for Time magazine @time. The design was unveiled March 7 at a ceremony at Princeton University, where Morrison taught for more than 15 years, and which is currently staging a months-long series of exhibitions and programs dedicated to the author’s life and literary achievements. The ceremony featured a letter from former President Barack Obama @barackobama and former first lady Michelle Obama @michelleobama, which was read aloud, as well as a video tribute from Oprah Winfrey @oprah. “Toni told fundamental truths about our country and the human condition,” the Obamas wrote, “but she didn’t just reflect what was true. She helped generations of Black Americans reimagine what was possible.” In 2012, Obama presented Morrison with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. “Toni Morrison’s books are in so many of our homes and abide in our hearts because she served as a catalyst for generations of readers over the years to understand the power of reading and words,” said Winfrey in her video. The media mogul’s book club has highlighted four of Morrison’s books—more than any other author.
