Sports communications lessons from Jerry Maguire
Sports agents are facing challenges after a new FIFA exam was established to weed out the rogues with some reports suggesting that many of them will fail the new examinations.
I've worked with, and got to know, many agents over the course of my working life - with a hat tip to Calacus friends Rachel Anderson and Nick Robinson who we hold in high esteem.
Here are some key outtakes from one of my all time favourite sports agent-focused movies - Jerry Maguire.
Be ethical - As some of you will know, the story hinges on Jerry's decision to write a mission statement that promotes honest and genuine relationships with clients, rather than just chasing money. He is given a wake-up call by the son of an injured player who doesn't want to see his Dad get hurt anymore. By the end of the film, Jerry's compassionate approach wins and other agents try to emulate him.
Outtake: While a key role in sports management is commercial partnerships, businesses which focus on profits over people tend to struggle.
Be honest - Having struck out on his own to pursue a more genuine approach as an agent, Jerry risks losing his only client, Rod Tidwell, by holding true to his values. This consistency ultimately wins Rod's trust and credibility by the end.
Outtake: Telling clients the truth, if it is in their best interest, may impact the relationship negatively in the short term but it will only lead to a stronger relationship - and better results for the client - long term.
Be patient - When Jerry is fired from his agency, he ends up losing all but two of his clients (with his star boy betraying him and leaving on the night of the NFL draft). He maintains his external persona of positivity but shows signs of struggle when things do not go according to plan. Despite feeling the pressure, he sticks to his values and eventually things take a turn for the better.
Outtake: Good ideas and indeed good work take time to come to fruition.
Listen - Despite his epiphany, Jerry takes time to understand the importance of living his values, which includes actively listening to clients and what they need.
Outtake: Effective communication involves actively listening to others and understanding their perspectives rather than just shoe-horning our own bias and agenda. Communication should always be a two-way street.
Be human - Rod struggles because he is defensive and wary of others. It's only when he lets his guard down and starts to show his true self that he captures the imagination of his fans and wider NFL audience, ultimately securing the contract he has yearned for.
Outtake - In this dog eat dog word sometimes we forget to be authentic, but our authenticity is what sets us apart from the crowd.
Make an impact - Jerry knows how to turn on the charm, and that's one of his strengths. He also knows how to grab the attention of his wife, Dorothy, despite facing a room of critical divorcees.
Outtake - Learning how to stand out and make your point, in today's world of short attention spans, is more important than ever.

Blog Post #2 - Social Media in Crisis
Social media is extremely important when managing a crisis. Good PR teams know that they can use social media to immediately deliver information related to a crisis to a mass audience. If the crisis situation has to do with risk/disaster then they can use social media to warn the public about any dangers. For example, when tornados hit the St. Louis Lambert airport in 2011, the PR team immediately took to social media to deliver live updates on the situation as it had a national impact. Responding quickly to a crisis on social media also allows an organization to control the narrative. They can take ownership of a situation before the public starts speculating.
Social media can also be a risk to an organization. If someone writes a bad review that goes viral, that could damage the organization's brand. If the organization doesn't respond to the chatter then they putting their credibility at risk.
In 2009, a hoax video was published on YouTube by former Domino's Pizza employees where they violated health codes and threatened customer safety with unsanitary food. Domino's didn't respond immediately to the video and discussion online and instead sent out a press release days after the incident. This did nothing to calm the viral discussion on social media and even though YouTube took the video down, it had already been reposted to several other blogging sites. Domino's eventually released a video from the president online that addressed the crisis and assured the public that they would work to prevent this in the future. ABC News stated in an article that "The company's swift response to the employees and its wider customer base, using the same Web sites and media that spread the video, has been praised by observers who nevertheless wonder if the company can emerge unscathed" (2016).
Every organization should stay on top of social media chatter as it relates to their brand. Prompt action can be the difference between a mild incident and a crisis PR nightmare.

Legit though, we should start turning ecosystem restoration and work to make our world more tolerant to the effects of climate change into annual holidays and festivals
Like how just about every culture used to have festivals to celebrate the beginning of the harvest or its end, or the beginning of planting, or how whole communities used to host barn raisings and quilting bees - everyone coming together at once to turn the work of months or years into the work of a few days
Humble suggestions for festival types:
Goat festival
Besides controlled burns (which you can't do if there's too much dead brush), the fastest, most effective, and most cost-efficient way to clear brush before fire season - esp really heavy dead brush - is to just. Put a bunch of goats on your land for a few days!
Remember that Shark Tank competitor who wanted to start a goat rental company, and everyone was like wtf? There was even a whole John Oliver bit making fun of the idea? Well THAT JUST PROVES THEY'RE FROM NICE WET PLACES, because goat rental companies are totally a thing, and they're great.
So like. Why don't we have a weekend where everyone with goats just takes those goats to the nearest land that needs a ton of clearing? Public officials could put up maps of where on public lands grazing is needed, and where it definitely shouldn't happen. Farmers and people/groups with a lot of acres that need clearing can post Goat Requests.
Little kids can make goat-themed crafts and give the goats lots of pets or treats at the end of the day for doing such a good job. Volunteers can help wrangle things so goats don't get where they're not supposed to (and everyone fences off land nowadays anyway, mostly). And the goats, of course, would be in fucking banquet paradise.
Planting Festival and Harvest Festival
Why mess with success??? Bring these back where they've disappeared!!! Time to swarm the community gardens and help everyone near you with a farm make sure that all of their seeds are sown and none of the food goes to waste in the fields, decaying and unpicked.
And then set up distribution parts of the festival so all the extra food gets where it needs to be! Boxes of free lemons in front of your house because you have 80 goddamned lemons are great, but you know what else would be great? An organized effort to take that shit to food pantries (which SUPER rarely get fresh produce, because they can't hold anything perishable for long at all) and community/farmer's markets
Rain Capture Festival
The "water year" - how we track annual rainfall and precipitation - is offset from the regular calendar year because, like, that's just when water cycles through the ecosystems (e.g. meltwater). At least in the US, the water year is October 1st through September 30th of the next year, because October 1st is around when all the snowmelt from last year is gone, and a new cycle is starting as rain begins to fall again in earnest.
So why don't we all have a big barn raising equivalent every September to build rain capture infrastructure?
Team up with some neighbors to turn one of those little grass strips on the sidewalk into a rain-garden with fall-planting plants. Go down to your local church and help them install some gutters and rain barrels. Help deculvert rivers so they run through the dirt again, and make sure all the storm drains in your neighborhood are nice and clear.
Even better, all of this - ESPECIALLY the rain gardens - will also help a ton with flood control!
I'm so serious about how cool this could be, yall.
And people who can't or don't want to do physical stuff for any of these festivals could volunteer to watch children or cook food for the festival or whatever else might need to be done!
Parties afterward to celebrate all the good work done! Community building and direct local improvements to help protect ourselves from climate change!
The possibilities are literally endless, so not to sound like an influencer or some shit, but please DO comment or reply or put it in the notes if you have thoughts, esp on other things we could hold festivals like this for.
Canning festivals. "Dig your elderly neighbors out of the snow" festivals. Endangered species nesting count festival. Plant fruit trees on public land and parks festival. All of the things that I don't know anywhere near enough to think of. Especially in more niche or extreme ecosystems, there are so many possibilities that could do a lot of good

im sorry people calling watchers response "too late" are incredibly wrong. they took two days. the original announcement was posted on friday and then they posted their response to backlash the following monday. that's a perfectly normal respone time. they took the weekend to gauge the opinion of the fans, reformed their plan and then posted an update admitting fault. im not saying i think their response was good or bad but it was definitely quick.

Recently, I attended a conference where people referred to it as the ‘triple planetary crisis’ (climate change, biodiversity loss and plastic/waste pollution) and honestly I think it’s a game changer, shorter to say that ‘climate and ecological crisis’, leaves out a lot of the words that switch people off (warming, extinction, etc) and yet conveys urgency and a sense of universal responsibility. What do you guys think?

reminder that fighting for climate solutions means fighting for public health.
switching to clean energy means less air pollution and significantly less deaths associated with fossil fuel extraction
green, localized, and walkable neighborhoods with accessible transport is good for physical, mental, social, and emotional health
cutting down the beef and dairy industries and eating more plant based (for those who can) is better for health of individuals
fighting for unionized labor in good, clean jobs means less stress in people's daily lives which leads to less stress-related illness and injury
Fight for your neighbors, fight for the planet
