Yes, I know that Father's Day was technically June 18th, but I had a lot more stuff to post, and the queue wants what it wants. Besides, when you have a cool dad, every day is Father's Day.

FANGS OUT - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Stadium Media
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS:  A Group of college students head to Mexico for some cheap plastic surgery. There they meet Dr. Pavor, a creepy surgeon who is actually a vampire, harvesting victims for his blood cartel. Aided by his blood thirsty nurses he systematically carries out his evil plan. When a detective looking for his missing daughter arrives - all hell breaks loose in a bloody combustible conclusion.
REVIEW: Filmmaker Dennis Devine to date has over 30 credits to his name, beginning with the first feature he directed in 1989, “Fatal Images.” That film was a genre film about a haunted camera possessed by a serial killer, and over the years he’s made numerous genre films, quite a few in the vampire genre. In FANGS OUT the head vampire uses the cover of a Mexican plastic surgery clinic to lure victims in.
The plot is a fun idea that begins to fall apart with burdensome cliches, bad one liners and tons of sexual innuendos and references that could have benefited from a polish by a female screenwriter. It amounts to soft-porn without the visuals. Three of the friends are there for the surgery and one is there for moral support. Almost every scene contains a moment where she questions the shadiness of the clinic. She also is a lesbian catholic school reject that the head vampire has an affinity for. Talk about back loading a character to fill plot holes! Once you get past the initial setup the story delivers everything you expect it to with no real surprises. The story attempts satire, possibly humor, but it tries too hard to get those laughs and the jokes fall like a lead balloon. There is a scene with nurse Anna and a random character that feels like a gag they shoehorned into the plot that could have been cut without any impact on the story.
The production values are uneven. There are times the cinematography is too hot. There are numerous annoying rough edits. There are scenes in the same location where there is an air unit running and as they cut between characters the background sound appears and disappears. The costumes look like bagged outfits from a ninety-nine cents store. The makeup on nurse Anna is bad, as are all the prosthetic fangs that look like bad dentures. The production design utilizes lots of fabric or sheets to turn rooms into operating rooms, in addition to protect the vampires from sunlight.
The performances are monotone. I’ve seen better performances in a porn films and I’m not talking about the sex scenes. It feels like they are all in on the joke and are nodding to each other thinking the audience won’t notice. There are a few times when actress Stacy Aung’s work rises above the rest for a moment, but it quickly degrades back to the same level as the rest of the cast. With the fangs in, it becomes difficult to understand what they are saying and it looks like they might spit them out any second.
FANGS OUT takes a timely topic and never hits its mark as it is stiffelled by lackluster production values, poor acting, and some sloppy writing. I’m a bit surprised because being familiar with some of director Dennis Devine’s other films, FANGS OUT feels rushed. Many of his films have that B movie feel, but there are good B movies and bad ones. Much like the character of Madison, I’m here to warn you that this is a bit shady.
Intentional or not, I did find it funny that many of the names in the cast sound like the names of porn stars and Veronica Ricci has done her share of them.

📽️ Can’t Buy Me Love (1987)
Twenty-one year old Patrick Dempsey was so cute in this. I can’t say that it was the best acted movie, but it was definitely enjoyable. It’s a classic teen movie plot: fake dating turns into real dating. Honestly, though, I’m a sucker for that storyline. I really enjoyed this movie, and I would watch it again.
Sex/nudity: 3/10 (some innuendoes/comments, kissing/making out, women’s underwear seen)
Violence: 2/10 (a couple slaps/punches)
Language: 4/10 (one f-word, several other curse words)
Overall rating: 7/10

I saw somebody once say that Dick and Helena is like Brutalia and I had to think about it for a bit. This is not me saying that Brutalia and Dickkory don’t share parallels because THEY DO! But when they said that like it made me see what they meant and I think it had to do with the private moments between them. Yes I know D*vin but the last exchange here was actually sweet. But this one really is the one that got me like thinking...
the more i hear about these two the more they intrigue me like oomf is reading their joint book right now and i had no idea the artist recreated the famous brutalia kiss between them i was 👀

Far-right extremists have spent the past week harassing and threatening migrants on the United States border with Mexico while making money by livestreaming it on YouTube and Rumble.
“Anybody in there,” said Dennis Yarbery, one of the YouTubers, as he approached a migrant camp at night in Jacumba Hot Springs, California, near the border last week. Yarbery was livestreaming to thousands of people. “Come out, come out wherever you are.”
Yarbery is one of three men who split off from the Take Our Border Back convoy in Texas and, according to their livestreams, spent days driving along the border in Arizona and California to harass migrants and volunteers with nonprofit groups.
“We’re illegal hunters,” Yarbery told a store clerk while livestreaming at a Subway sandwich counter in Jacumba Hot Springs. “I’ve hunted a lot in my life, but I’ve never actually hunted people, and that’s what we’re doing now.”
Yarbery, who is known online as both MasterGrifter and Big D and says he joined the People’s Convoy, a group that protested Covid lockdown measures and disrupted traffic, in 2022, was joined by Josh Fulfer, known as OreoExpress, and Joe Felix, known as Taco Joe, who runs 1st Responders Media, an outlet focused on livestreaming far-right events.
Throughout the hours-long broadcasts from the border in Arizona and California, these livestreamers regularly asked for donations from their supporters, which they claimed was being used to continue their work “covering” the crisis.
Even while in the middle of harassing the migrants, the livestreamers could still be heard thanking those who were sending them money via YouTube’s Super Chat function or through other platforms like Venmo and the Christian-aligned crowdfunding site GiveSendGo. In one situation, while Fulfer was shouting at migrants in Arizona telling them to go home, he stopped briefly to call out a supporter who had sent him $50 on Venmo.
These livestreamers come after weeks of inflamed rhetoric from both the far-right community and Republican lawmakers about immigration at the Texas border with Mexico. This year, the situation has erupted: After Texas governor Greg Abbott refused to heed the Biden administration’s calls to remove razor wire along the border, a dozen GOP governors publicly declared support for Abbott, and the Take Our Border Back convoy traveled from Virginia to Texas. Though the convoy petered out, the violent anti-immigrant rhetoric, which experts have warned would have long-term impacts, has only heightened.
“The post-convoy terror campaign against immigrants at the border follows an all-too-familiar pattern we’ve tracked for the past couple of decades,” Devin Burghart, the executive director at the Institute for Research and Education on Human Rights, tells WIRED. “Public bragging about ‘hunting people’ is a descent into a dangerous new low for armed vigilantes. Left unchecked, armed far-right vigilantes will spill more blood.”
After the livestreamers left Texas, they went to Sasabe in Arizona and a migrant camp run by No More Deaths, a humanitarian organization that provides support for migrants crossing the border.
During an hours-long livestream at night, Yarbery, Fulfer, and Felix all shouted at the migrants and accused them of human trafficking. Yarbery even tried to sell cigarettes to the migrants for $20 each. At one point, Fulfer threatened violence against a migrant who was shining a torch at their cameras.
The trio also verbally attacked a volunteer who worked with the organization, following her around as she phoned for help from US Border Patrol, according to livestreams of the incident viewed by WIRED before they were taken offline.
Yarbery, Felix, and Fulfer didn’t respond to WIRED’s requests for comment about their actions at the border.
Laurie Cantillo, a board member from Humane Borders, says the organization, which maintains water stations along migrant routes near the border, is aware of the allegations of harassment. “We have noticed an increase in vandalism of our permitted water stations along the border,” Cantillo tells WIRED. “Our 55-gallon barrels have been shot, stabbed, drained, and stolen. It’s a sad state of affairs when someone sabotages water that can save a human life.”
US Border Patrol and No More Deaths did not respond to multiple requests for comment about the incident. One former volunteer with No More Deaths, who did not want to be identified due to safety concerns, told WIRED that they were not surprised no one replied, as the organization “may not want to draw extra attention to this event.”
After departing Arizona, the trio of livestreamers headed to California, where they continued to try and track down migrant camps. On several days their searches were fruitless, though they continued to broadcast and solicit donations through YouTube.
After Fulfer and Felix departed, Yarbery continued to “hunt,” as he called it, and during one broadcast over the weekend, he livestreamed with his partner and their baby while driving toward the border in Jacumba Hot Springs.
While there, Yarbery met with locals to discuss the migrant situation, and in one conversation a man could be heard on the livestream saying, “I say we shoot ’em all,” before Yarbery told him to be quiet as he was broadcasting live on YouTube.
YouTube told WIRED that it terminated Fulfer and Felix’s accounts after WIRED asked about the livestreamers, but it did not take action on Yarbery’s account. All of Yarbery’s videos, YouTube said, were set to private by the account holder. Yarbery has also created a backup channel, and told his followers in a YouTube chat where they could continue to follow him on the platform.
For years, extremism experts have been tracking how violent rhetoric around the border and migrants has led directly to violence, dating back to the 2000s when fear-mongering attacks on immigrants led to the mobilization of far-right paramilitary groups, one of which brutally murdered Raul Flores and his 9-year-old daughter Brisenia.
“Sadly, this cycle of violence has become so common that it tends to go unnoticed outside of the communities targeted by far-right vigilantes,” Burghart said. “This time around, the Black Mirror-like difference is that tech advances now allow [people like Yarbery, Fulfer, and Felix] to stream and monetize their cruelty to a far-right fanbase that craves more.”

Dick's memories:
I've been working on this part for 6 months. I wrote a lot of it from memory and then went to find the panels and check I was characterising them correctly (and add the attribution).
There are some big moments in Dick and Tim's relationship referenced here, of course. But wherever possible, I tried to choose slightly less well known moments, or an alternate panel from the main one pointed to in that issue.
Some fun facts:
38 footnotes, referencing 34 separate comics (I use two scenes from the same issue for 4 comics: Batman, Nightwing, Robin, and Gotham Knights)
15 different comic runs are referenced (Batman, Detective Comics, Azrael, Birds of Prey, Nightwing, Robin, Red Robin, Batman: Shadow of the Bat, Gotham Knights, New Titans, Showcase '93, Joker: Last Laugh, Identity Crisis, Infinite Crisis, and Blackest Night: Batman)
The years covered by the comics are the following: 1990, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011.
The years missed are the following: 1989 and 1991.
1989: I skipped because I really, really wanted to open with Tim's first actual team up with Dick after A Lonely Place of Dying. Plus, Dick didn't really look and see Tim until after ALPoD. That's why no circus, no baby Tim, no origin story.
1991: Dick and Tim do not interact in any comic labelled 1991. They do appear in a single splash panel together.
I struggled with myself over whether to include 2009 or not, because I wanted moments of brotherhood between Tim and Dick, where they clearly cared for each other, and I didn't want to include any of Battle for the Cowl or the Red Robin fight. There were in the end only three stories that really qualified: The end of Heart of Hush; the 2008 Holiday Special (which has a Feb 2009 cover date); and Blackest Night: Batman. The only issue of Heart of Hush with a 2009 coverdate simply doesn't have any conversation BETWEEN Dick and Tim to use (they're too busy explaining to Tommy how much he screwed up); while I do like the Wonderful Life story, the costume handover was a bit too twee to fit anywhere into the flow of memories plus Owen Mercer's there; and in the end, I used the panel AFTER the panel of Blackest Night. This was a slight cop out in terms of the whole 'avoid the Red Robin fight' aim, but it's the one big moment that shows Dick and Tim were still in sync during that time, and in terms of the scene build it slotted quite nicely into the explosions-building-to-dead-Tim run of memories.
14 different writers created the comics (Marv Wolfman, Alan Grant, Doug Moench, Chuck Dixon, Dennis O'Neil, Devin Grayson, Scott Beatty, Brad Meltzer, Geoff Johns, Adam Beechen, Fabian Nicieza, Peter Tomasi, Christopher Yost, and Scott Snyder)
The most common writer was of course Chuck Dixon, who wrote 10 of the issues; Devin Grayson was in second with 6 issues.
The comic that appears the most often is Nightwing, with 6 issues; Gotham Knights has 5 issues appear.
I had great fun constructing this; I hope while you were reading it many of the scenes also played in your head.

On 29th February 1904 the Pavilion Theatre, Glasgow, opened.
Designed by Bertie Crewe for Thomas Barrasford, the Pavilion Theatre opened at the corner of Renfield Street and Renfrew Street, Glasgow on the 29 February, 1904. It was regarded as luxurious for its time with its decor being described by the owners as “pure Louis XV”. An electrically operated sliding roof ensured good ventilation.
Performances in the early days were mainly variety, melodrama and pantomime. Many of the leading music hall artistes of the period appeared at the Pavilion, including Marie Lloyd, Little Tich, Harry Lauder, Florrie Forde, Will Fyffe, Sarah Bernhardt and a then unknown Charlie Chaplin.
Since the 1930s, the Pavilion began to host pantomimes with top name stars of the Scottish variety scene, such as Harry Gordon and Dave Willis. In more recent times it has produced plays, such as ‘The Sash’ and ‘The Steamie’.
The Pavilion Theatre is now the only privately run theatre in Scotland and one of a few unsubsidised independent theatres left in Britain.
“Defying all the odds, Glasgow’s Pavilion regularly purveys variety to this day. All the more remarkable as it is completely unsubsidised and receives no funding from the Scottish Arts Council and kindred bodies whose thoughts and cash are directed at higher cultural activities. It remains the last stronghold of a long music hall tradition in Europe’s City of Culture owing everything to a dedicated staff and patrons and nothing to the public purse.
With its imposing terra cotta facade, the Pavilion Theatre of Varieties was designed by Bertie Crewe in the grand manner for Thomas Barrasford. The domed ceiling was surmounted by an electrically controlled sliding roof for ventilation. Fine Rococo plasterwork on the circle, balcony and box fronts; decoration executed in pure Louis XV; handsome mahogany woodwork and the marble mosaic floor all lent the 1800 seat theatre an aura of splendour.
No less amusing than the dentist advertising in the Pavilion programme “painless extractions with nitrous oxide for 4/- (20p) or cocaine for 1/- (5p)”, were the press observations on the “fashionable company” which attended the Pavilion’s first house on 29th February,1904. We learn that “among the elite there was quite a preponderance of ladies and gentlemen of quality in evening dress”. Alas, class consciousness and respectability were all in Edwardian Britain!
The ‘forties and ‘fifties saw pantomime runs of sixteen weeks, the happy and hilarious summer seasons were emulated during the 1960s and early 1970s by Lex McLean. Another regular crowd puller to Renfield Street was Jack Milroy.
Lulu from Dennistoun (real name Marie Lawrie) broke box office records in 1975, Billy Connolly, Hector Nicol Andy Cameron portrayed their own distinctive brands of humour while Scottish songstresses Lena Zavaroni, , Sheena Easton, Lena Martell and Barbara Dickson also scored heavily with Pavilion audiences.
It was anything but plain sailing for the Pavilion and there was gloomy speculation of closure after incurring heavy financial losses in 1981. Spared the fate which befell the Queens, Metropole, Empire, Alhambra and Empress Theatres, the 80 years old Pavilion was rescued by James Glasgow and transformed into a modest profit maker. Smash-hit shows with Sydney Devine; spells from hypnotist Robert Halpern; pantomime with Denny Willis, and one night gigs from the foremost modern television entertainers have kept the cash tills registering.
The Pavilion also played a major role in the annual Mayfest – Glasgow’s International Festival of popular theatre, music, the arts and community programmes.
Little altered and virtually unspoilt since its inception, the seating capacity of 1449 is made up of 677 stalls, 341 circle, 413 balcony and 18 box seats. While the stiff shirts in chauffeur-driven cabs have given way to coach parties from the rural areas of Strathclyde and beyond, a policy of providing the best in live entertainment has been pursued consistently. The portents look good for the vibrant Pavilion Theatre of Varieties.”
The Pavillion is, in my view a survivor, even over the past few years tragedy has struck the area with a series of fires.

anyways i think there's a few of reasons why dixon never really had steph & helena interact outside of blunt trauma:
one, i think to him steph & helena probably shared too similar of a narrative role for him to be intrigued by the dynamic. the things that fandom find interesting about them in their similarities: both inhabiting an outsider space and both having similar outlooks on violence and justice doesn't necessarily leave a whole lot of room for longstanding narrative conflict. you can even see this in blunt trauma a little bit: steph kind of has to take over the "don't go too far" role to play against helena like bruce, dick, or tim usually has to to, which doesn't exactly quite work for steph as steph is also a "don't go too far" kind of character. and since steph is also shown to be more approving of helena's method in general and helena was okay enough with steph by the end but very much a lone wolf kind of character due to her own narrative isolation, i think he probably felt that there were not a ton of stories to do with them together that wouldn't just fall into that same dynamic over and over again, which is hm. he probably felt that blunt trauma was enough of an exploration of these two outsider foils' similarities that he didn't need to keep repeating basically the same story over and over again (although similar character can have interesting tension due to their similarities but differences, since steph and helena are also both ostensibly side characters in other characters' long standing stories there's really no room to devote to exploring those intricacies for those two in particular).
two, dixon does have a bias against helena (he does think she's crazy and wrong) and probably didn't want *steph* near her too much. especially given after cataclysm we went into NML which solidified helena as an outsider & post-NML is when he started bringing steph into the core inside group, to continue to push steph with helena would probably be relative backslide to the outside for steph's character and helena was probably considered opposite to the growth and acceptance he was trying to showcase for steph (notice post-NML is when he started to be interested in the steph and canary--who was a clear insider by virtue of babs--dynamic instead)
three, helena after NML also got more taken over by rucka and devin grayson, and dixon just didn't do quite as much with her in general, likely due to his increased focus on the BOP following NML. and since steph didn't tend to get written unless dixon placed her there, rucka and grayson probably just had more interest in exploring other helena dynamics instead of steph, who was very much dixon's character.
four, after dennis o'neil retired as editor in 2001, dixon has said in interviews this was a time period where he was starting to lose a lot of pull as far as stories and the interest in shared continuity and stories were also declining. we know that he had been gunning for steph robin and getting rejected repeatedly. it's possible that he did want to explore more steph dynamics and dc editorial is the one who was pushing for more isolated stories where these characters stayed mainly in their respective titles for the most part, so he kept it to what he could manage in his own stories.
