Hanamusa, Explained

There is a nonzero chance if you follow me on tumblr, you’ve seen the term ‘Hanamusa’ attached to something I shared. It’s probably also some super cute art of Delia Ketchum and Jessie Teamrocket, and you may wonder what is going on and also, why is there so much good art of this.

Hanamusa as a term derives from the Japanese names of the characters – Hanako and Musashi. If you’re into shipping name structures, Hana-Musa implies that Hanako is the seme and Musashi the uke, but I don’t think that holds for all use cases of the type of terminology. It’s a ship. It’s an AU ship, as in an ‘alternate universe’ ship, where the two characters are presented in a context outside of the normal context of the anime presentation of them.

The Hanamusa ship as I understand it is set at some point after Jessie and James stop chasing Ash around, and Jessie settles down into a relationship with Delia. There’s tension about her history with Ash and the confusion about finding Your Personal Villain dating your mom, but mostly it’s about showing a sweet domestic life between two characters you know very well in a format I kind of see as like, Comedy-Sabot Romantic 4koma. Like, Hanamusa content is funny (and it is VERY funny) but it doesn’t need to be funny, because the main thing it’s about is showing these two characters and their relationship as they do cute things together.

It’s why people watch shows like K-On basically.

As for where this idea comes from, (EDIT: Slightly wonky wording here, I should have phrased 'this current fandom push' - I don't have any reason to believe Mai INVENTED the ship, just that when you go looking you'll wind up at her work) it seems to have its genesis with the work of one Kiana Mai, who developed this ship some time ago. Kiana Mai is also an extremely skilled artist, and one of those skills seems to be focus, creating these extremely clean-line excellently structured scene vignettes with no unnecessary content in them but also no need to rocket along. It’s amazing, engaging work that uses every part of the small format amazingly well. Which makes sense because one of the things Kiana Mai does is storyboarding work for Disney animated TV shows, a task at which I am sure she no doubt excels.

What I think is the most interesting aspect of Hanamusa, to me specifically, is that it manages to combine three things I don’t actually care about, in a way that doesn’t interfere with something I have unexpectedly strong opinions on. I do not watch Pokemon, and I have not shed a tear for Team Rocket and Ash Ketchum wandering into the sunset. That is a show that is not for or about my interests and that is okay. Indeed, imagining that it should be about what interests me is baffling. I think if I stopped watching a show twenty years ago, I have lost all right to act like I’m entitled to expect it remain the way it was all the way back then.

But I do have opinions on Jessie and James’ character voice. Not their voice acting – I mean, I know for a fact they’ve had to change over time and no voice actor should be obligated to kick it in the same role for what could be their entire career. I mean the way they talk about things and the words they use and kind of emphasis they put on words when they talk. About the way they voice their ideas, or the way they express who they are in the way they talk to one another, that stuff. It’s about affordances and persona, about the kind of people you project being by what words you choose to use and the affect when using them.

It’s why when, if a picture of a character is underneath it, you can read some dril posts as being ‘appropriately’ voiced by a character, even if it’s describing a candle situation that Francis Crozier did not have opinions on.

Jessie has a voice.

Jessie, in my head, is someone capable of moments of tenderness and friendship that is normally overwhelmed by an incredible confidence in ability she does not have and mere reality will never be given permission to infringe on it. Jessie is unassailably unstoppably sure of herself, thoughtlessly stupid in a way that doesn’t mean she is stupid, but which exists in a context of someone who has relentlessly pursued excellence in her job which is also the equivalent of being a late night 7/11 manager. She is the Girlboss that is Gaslighting herself into thinking she has something to Gatekeep.

Delia Ketchum by comparison is a very nice piece of wallpaper. Every appearance of her in my mind is someone Very Nice who is Very Patient and Very Supportive and has managed to keep literally all emotionally challenging conversations from happening around Ash, which can be perhaps easier when you remember that he, too, is an idiot. I don’t know how Delia Ketchum talks, but I do know that there are ways that Delia Ketchum does not talk.

This is interesting! It’s interesting because it presents a character where I am very sure I know what she does do when she does it, and a character about whom I can only be sure wouldn’t do some things. It creates a character space, and it creates expectations of affect and performance within that space. Ash and other characters show up as well, but because they get to interact with this already-defined space, you get treated to this really lovely kind of resonance. Would Ash call Jessie ‘dad’? Maybe, to bug her. He was good at being a twerp. Wasn’t he? I mean I remember it that way, he seems to work out that way, but… how would I know?

I know more of this AU where Jessie is studying to be a Pokemon Doctor and Ash wears glasses than I do of the source material any more. And if you’re wondering ‘hey, do Jessie and Delia ever meet in the source material?’ Like, yeah, for a few seconds. What, the point is creating something new.

rizz you are a kind person thank you so much for giving me a chance to go crazy insane over my fanmade pokemon teams

now. full disclosure. i am a loser and a pedant and this ask took me hours because i kept going way too in depth and overly-rationalizing why certain pokemon would be unfeasible to have and etc etc and then i remembered that i am the god of this word document and i can do what i like if it means i have fun doing it. so i am giving myself one pedantic thing which is that i'm not giving people full teams since 1) i don't think a bunch of working class kids would have the means money or accommodation to support six full pets (i know the pokemon universe has free healthcare and everyone always has all the food and medicine they need for their pokemon but this is The Capitalism Show, that's not happening here), and 2) a big thing about newsies is the connections the characters have, so giving them all six pets felt like kind of a cop out to me. so we're going by anime rules in which people only have a team of six if they're professional trainers. but as for stuff like 'how can race, a child with 100 roommates, own a horse that is perpetually on fire', we're not gonna focus on that. we're having fun here.

jack

again, since jack as a character keeps people at a distance through his cowboy persona and santa fe dream, i don't think he'd have that large a team. honestly, i'm not sure he would've wanted a pokemon at all. BUT. rockruff's are such a perfect jack-mon it drives me insane. rockruff’s are given to young trainers as their friendly disposition makes them seem like ‘easy’ beginner pokemon, but as they grow older, they become more aggressive and many are abandoned before ever reaching evolution. i always saw this as a reference to buying puppies, not training them properly and then abandoning/surrendering them once they became too difficult, but maybe i was getting too PETA with it. either way, i think jack could relate to that in any au or era – the kids in newsies are ignorable until they cause problems, and then they’re troublemakers who get thrown in the refuge. again, i’m probably going way too PETA on this, but i don’t think it’s a stretch to see the possible connection. i think jack found her in an alley one day when he was young – he was on the run from snyder and couldn’t afford any lodging anywhere – and though she was snappy and defensive at first, jack understood all too well why she was. he was patient, quietly talking about anything at all, tossed her some of the food he’d scrounged for himself because she was just so skinny – and she hasn’t left his side, since. i like to believe she’d evolve into a dusk form lycanroc, as a rockruff can only become a dusk form lycanroc if they have the 'own tempo' ability, which makes them immune to confusion and intimidation, two things jack overcomes as a character.

and for a second pokemon. listen. i don’t think jack would want more than one pokemon – like i said, i don’t think he wanted any pokemon at all since he was headed to santa fe and wouldn’t’ve wanted to spend money he didn’t have on pets – but jack having a smeargle would be so funny. especially a shiny smeargle, for the red aesthetic. he doesn’t know it’s shiny he just thinks it’s really dirty. he fed it once and now it keeps following him around and he really wants it to go away until he finds it copying some of his drawings on the rooftop. and then he just... melts. i think that'd be adorable.

davey

MOTHERFUCKING JOLMTIK. joltik is a flawless davey pokemon. small, easily overlooked, can’t make their own energy and must recharge (like ‘TISM???? PERHAPS????), BUT after storing so much power, they can release it into something incredible!! they also evolve into galvantula, going from the smallest pokemon ever at only 4 inches to a GIANT TARANTULA LARGER THAN A HUMAN MAN – it represents davey’s arc and i won’t elaborate. they attack through speed and special attack, stunning their opponents rather than going on a full-fledged physical assault, which absolutely speaks to how davey behaves within the show. he may not be as physically tough as the newsies, but he is calculating, and more importantly, he’s good at it. also it’s a ‘tarantulas?’ reference, what do you WANT from me.

i like to think davey and his family couldn’t afford a pokemon for every kid, so they have their family pokemon (a mabosstif trained by mayer) and unfortunately no others. but davey found this palm-sized little bug under his pillow during winter, trying to generate energy from the heat, and so decided that maybe, MAYBE, the little fella could snooze under his cap for a bit, just to warm up.

(the joltik stayed. their name is edison. davey hasn’t taken his hat off in front of people in months because all edison's electric charges make his hair puff out in a static ball. don’t tell his mother.)

katherine

katherine is technically wealthy and therefore more likely to have a full pokemon team, but since she doesn’t rely on her father and is living independently on a female journalist’s salary in the 1890s, i don’t think she’d have a large team. three at most.

espeon – her partner pokemon, raised from an eevee. her name is bronte, which i decided before uksies as a reference to the bronte sisters, so happy coincidences all around. i don’t view katherine as a competitive battler since she has nothing to gain from it, so i imagine bronte mostly behaves as a cat would, just with more magic attached – sitting on katherine’s lap as she writes, using psychic moves to float her teacup to her when she needs it, etc – but she can also wreck shop if she needs to.

dachsbun – this one is purely just a charlie sausage cameo. i saw a dachshund pokemon and said ‘charlie sausage’. still, i think it’s a cute idea, and i love the idea of a young katherine running around with a tiny, floppy fidough.

meowstic – female meowstics lean more towards attacking whereas males lean towards defence; again, while i don’t see katherine as being a battler, i absolutely see her wanting a team that can fight should she need them to. here are two pokedex entries for meowstic: “if they don’t get what they want, they will torment you with their psychic abilities.” “if it doesn’t hold back when it unleashes its psychic power, it can tear apart a tanker. its unfriendliness is part of its charm.” we know katherine can be ruthless for the sake of justice, but a big part of katherine as a character is needing to hide her vulnerabilities so people will take her seriously; i like to think katherine tries to channel this energy when she needs people to listen to her. i also love giving characters grumpy little cats, apparently.

(also, this was unintentional, but the pink/purple, yellow/orange and blue colouring of each pokemon does fit w her uksies costumes)

race

race doesn’t really have a ‘partner’, he has his two pokemon who he loves with all his heart. the first is a shinx named lucky thirteen; i’ve always envisioned race as an electric type trainer, he just fits the bill so well. my original thought was electrike, as they can stimulate their muscles with electricity to run faster, and race has always had a connotation of speed (he’s often a track kid or a dancer in modern eras, he has to run away from cops a lot, etc. it’s not a CANON connotation by any means, he’s only called race because of sheepshead, but it’s a connotation i’ve held) but it just didn’t fit to me – electrike, even in first-stage, has a lot of edge to it that doesn’t suit race’s playful exterior. according to shinx’s pokedex entry, when threatened, it will release a dazzling flash and then escape while it’s foe is blinded. i like to think that race uses this to escape people when he’s cheated on a wager or running from the cops; i also think shinxes have a friendlier disposition than electrikes, and then you get all the edginess and good stats as the pokemon gets older and evolves, and i imagine race would mature in a similar way when he finally has the freedom to take himself more seriously as he ages.

race’s second pokemon is a ponyta named corona who wasn’t technically his at first, but he’d always talk to her when he was hiding in the sheepshead stables whenever he was running from someone. she lights his cigars and makes great company, but she is very excitable and also very stubborn. one day race finds her just. following him home across the brooklyn bridge. the next day’s headline is about a crazed pokemon who bucked off her rider, injured a stablehand and broke out of the stables. she’s a very special girl who gets many poffin treats.

(again – how does race keep this very flammable horse at the lodging house? fuck you i’m having fun.)

spot

spot only has one pokemon, making her seem like an easy fight, but with her reputation, it only makes her more intimidating. her partner, a riolu, seems calm and uninterested, but if you’re talking shit you will be hit by two rounds of ‘close combat’ – one by riolu, and one by spot. i like to think spot’s riolu is very protective of her because, as riolu’s can sense emotions, she knows when spot is leaning heavily on her ‘queen of brooklyn’ performance and when she needs to be supported. riolu’s can also sense a person’s nature, so spot will usually bring her to meetings to gage whether or not she can trust someone. unfortunately, her riolu turns into an excitable little puppy whenever race is around.

and now some rapid-fire newsies for funzies

albert has a nickit named dodger. he’ll knock something valuable to the floor, pretending it was an accident, and dodger will steal it.

i gave splasher a quaxley because. duck, swimming, haha. but i also gave jojo a bounsweet because uksies jojo slays hard enough to have a tsareenee when he’s older. then I remembered that both these pokemon’s final evolutions (quackaval and tsareenee) are rivals who will fight each other for territory, and now i can’t stop imagining that splasher and jojo have to constantly separate their pokemon who just wont stop kicking each other.

morris – a growlithe. someone who he knows will be loyal to him, no matter what.

oscar – an absol. someone who can tell when danger’s coming. unlike morris and his growlithe, oscar and his absol seem to really hate each other, but they stay together nonetheless.

mike and ike - plusle and minun. since uksies i love the idea that mike and ike are not twins and didn’t even know each other when they arrived at the lodging house, let alone know the other had the same pokemon as them until they met. they both find it very strange.

finch is the only newsie to have a full team but that’s because he’s befriended literally every bird pokemon that stops on the fire escape. There’s simon the starly, percy the pidove, peter the pidgey, timmy the taillow, franky the fletchling and rooney the rookidee. finch isn’t good at naming. still, the birds like him.

tommy boy has a lillipup and it really offsets his quiet tough-guy persona but he does not care.

when i first mentioned a newsies pokemon au someone mentioned romeo having a luvdisc just for the funniness of it, but honestly i love the idea of romeo having something like brock's croagunk from the 'diamond and pearl: battle dimensions' series to physically knock him on his ass the moment he starts getting too romantic.

medda has a snubbull and she’s the ugliest angriest thing in the world but she loves medda and that’s enough.

What if Conan's not dead, but because he became a Phantump (something something connection with death something), and with the lore surrounding them (which I always thought was more like popular myths and hearsay rather than anything actually tangibly true in most cases), everyone, including himself, assumed that that was what had happened? He could just be like Haibara, but there'd be next to no way of knowing it.

Also, having Hattori capable of understanding Pokemon is a fun touch to add to his canonical weirdness (the dude is lowkey a clairvoyant in canon, even if they never properly address this- maybe in the Pokemon universe, he's a Psychic trainer class? without realizing he's one, of course).

I do wonder, if Kaito is a Zorua, then what's his entire deal in this universe in the first place? I don't know if the same premise would work here without some tweaking- maybe he's Toichi's Pokemon instead of his son? Or maybe Kaito's parents are also secretly Pokemon, maybe taught themselves how to talk like Meowth does in the anime or something. Real-life kitsune/fae, pretty much, lmao.

I think it’s extremely funny that Conan is a dead murdered ghost in this au, so I’m gonna stick with it, but I will say that they find out pretty early on that the Black Org has some kind of powerful Legendary or Mythical Pokémon (probably Jirachi) locked up, and if Conan can defeat the org, that Pokémon can help him turn back—basically, same as in canon

I agree, heiji’s quasi-clairvoyance is one of my favorite random details that’s never ever addressed. He’s so weird and I love it so much, so ofc in this au he’s gotta be wild to outside people as well

I mentioned in a previous post, I don’t really have strong feelings on either explanation for kaito cause it’s funny to me either way :) he’s just having a good time going to school and stealing gems and also can use Shadow Claw if he so desired

It honestly baffles me how people are dunking on Sada and Turo for being shitty parents much more than I saw when Sun and Moon first came and Lusamine was first revealed to be the villain like huh 😭 where was that energy before??? Because I feel there’s more nuance with Sada and Turo’s characters and their motivations than there were with Lusamine’s (I’m talking about her in the games of course, not the anime. I will also leave discussion for what happens in Ultra Sun and Moon for another post, so I’m only talking about the plot of the original Sun and Moon here). I’m honestly just tired of all the bashing on the Professors and them being watered down to “typical shitty parent in Pokemon” when the game clearly states and implies the exact opposite.

Lusamine is very much shown to have abandoned her kids, openly berating them and saying she has no children right in front of her daughter’s face because they “abandoned her love” and going forth with her plan to open the wormholes and summon the ultra beasts with no consideration for anything else. She doesn’t have the headspace to care about her children anymore in her plan, in huge contrast to Sada/Turo’s plan where despite how extreme it was, was at the core still centered around their son and their family. I think chalking it down to just “well they’re still both bad parents anyway” takes away some of the complexity surrounding their characters in the first place. Also I’m only bringing Lusamine as a comparison mostly because Ghetsis and Giovanni do not have any other depth to their characters in the core games lmao, and I feel Lusamine is a great example of a parent who used to care but had lost that love after her husband’s “death” and along the way of achieving her goal, while Sada and Turo are examples of the complete opposite: parents who still held onto that love and care throughout their goal, but took it so far that they hurt the one person it was for the most out of everything. It really feels like people are portraying the professors’ flaws in the completely wrong way. The problem was never “they never loved their son at all and intentionally abandoned him” it was “they became so invested and deluded in their plan they ended up neglecting the treasure it was supposed to be for.” which is exactly what distinguishes them from all the other parent antagonists we’ve seen so far. There’s a certain tragedy present in seeing a broken family that used to be so happy together that I feel was also in Sun and Moon’s story, but was muddled due to the story focusing on other aspects.

And I’m going to address this right now because I know people are going to say something because they lack reading comprehension: I am not excusing Sada and Turo’s actions in the game and how their neglect had affected Arven. Explanations are not Excuses. You can acknowledge that they loved their son while still hurting him in the end, both ideas can coexist. I merely just want to analyze wtf even happened here for the professor to go down this path. And it’s also worth nothing that we don’t have much answers in the game itself as of right now, since well—the original is dead and we’re dealing with an AI version of them for the entirety of the game. Most of this is coming from the original’s journals in the lab, but I think the game makes a clear distinction that they still loved Arven even after everything. Despite their delusion taking over them, I think they genuinely believed what they were doing was the best for them and their family despite otherwise. The whole point at the end was to highlight how they didn’t need to create that paradise. They had that loving family already, and it was too late for them to realize that Arven only needed them and nothing else.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but I want the DLC to address Arven’s other parent and what exactly happened to them (or better yet, meet them in the story which would honestly be an interesting parallel where the professor of the opposite version is the one you get to know more than the original in game one). I know the in game Professor’s journal entry says they “walked out” but what does that even mean in hindsight? Keep in mind this is from the point of view of someone who’s continuously being deluded into their own idea of paradise, who most likely felt grief after their partner left them that they built an entire AI of themselves to help complete the project.

And yet they still say they’re going to build a paradise for “the three of them.” Does that mean the in game professor was also trying in some way to bring the other parent back? What if it was an accident? What if they were sent through the time machine and couldn’t go back, and the in game professor was so distraught their delusion out of sheer desperation made it so they processed it as “(s)he walked out on me, and now I’m all alone.” Of course this all a lot of speculation, but it just doesn’t make sense to me how Arven’s other parent would “leave” like that. Maybe I’m being an optimist about it, but it really does feel like it was unwillingly in some way, where the in game professor’s increasing delusion was the reason why they “left” so to speak.

And that’s not even addressing the 3rd legendary of the game and its role in all of this is. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was meant to parallel the snake/the devil in Genesis, as the sin of temptation since the professor and Area Zero have a lot of similarities with the Garden of Eden and this idea of “paradise” for their family. Where the 3rd legendary gave them the opportunity to create their paradise by giving them access to the paradox pokemon and terastalizing, and thus influenced them so much, it eventually led them down to a path of their own destruction consumed by the delusion that they could create a paradise for their family, but failed to recognize they ended up hurting the one person they treasured most in the end. If the other professor did indeed return in the DLC, maybe it would give the chance to separate themselves from their spouse and make things right with both the region and Arven. Having them be the antithesis to the other Professor’s motivation and making the choice to stay with Arven in the present would be a really cool way to wrap up the story ngl.

Anyways people who portray them as apathetic and uncaring to Arven in fan art and fics I wish you a very “play the fucking game again please”. Even their character design sheets say otherwise, especially with Sada like I cannot imagine the woman described as “not being able to hide her emotions well” would be a cold and uncaring mother like come on 💀 I played Violet for crying out loud and I’m still able to recognize that.

I was being silly earlier and looking at other spiderkin posts [btw if ur spiderkin pls interact, I love meeting other little arachnids <3 /nf] and I came across a post of someone who was talking about how they thought they were just spider-hearted but as they went on they realized they might be spider kin.

Im not gonna go into full detail about what they said but basically it was something along the lines of feeling an immense relation to and having intense empathy towards spiders. They mentioned that they had once jokingly said to a coworker that they were a spider, and when they said that they go on to say that it felt like saying their own name.

I relate to this A LOT, and I feel like it’s a big part of what being otherkin feels like to me. When I was younger I used to say I was an animal a lot. Now, before I continue I’d like to say this is NOT me saying that therianthropy is just a kid thing that people grow out of. I am just saying that in my personal experience as a [younger] kid this is how I felt it and to this day I still do.

It’s even more so now that when I jokingly call myself a cryptid or a spider it just feels like I’m saying what I am. In my mind I don’t have the body of a human, I think in third person and when I do it’s always been to where I am not a human but some sort of creature [in most cases I’m a coyote, Zoroark, or spider].

As I am writing this I kind of realize that being spiderkin makes a lot of sense. When I was younger I pretended to not like spiders because everyone I knew hated them and thought they were gross[meanwhile in my room I would just sort of look at the cobweb in the corner of my room and waited to see who was living there], I had always felt really different and I didn’t think I fit in at all.

Fast forward to now where I’m starting to develop and get a hold of who I am, it makes a lot more sense now. Not just with being spiderkin but also being owl, coyote, cryptid, Pokemon, etc kin.

Just finished pokemon Scarlet and Violet and I have....thoughts...heads up this is on my phone so if there are some issues apologies. (Spoilers below!)

For one...Nintendo what the heck!? Not only is Arven dealing with the potential of losing the only good thing in his life that is his dog but his mom walks out on him and his dad just dies, come on Nintendo give my emo boy something. At first I did not like Arven not for the jerky demeanor honestly it was refreshing to meet someone like that in Pokémon it was his HAIR his weird fringe thing we’ve all been through the phase of having one hair over the eye so I get it he’s a kid but still....

For two...Team Star I love, especially Giacomo, I don’t know what it is but he’s my favorite maybe it’s his combination of Guzma and Grimsley energy or something. I don’t know all I know is that I want to write a fanfic or read one of him so much seriously...I hope the anime does a whole exploration of Team Star and not do them dirty as they did Team Skull with Guzma

For three, Nemona I’ve played Pokémon a fair few years and Nemona has made me like rivals again, a bit anyway, she isn’t nearly as annoying as past rivals. I really like how the champion Geeta implied Nemona’s loneliness despite her own cheerful demeanor that was interesting speaking of Geeta I think is my second favorite champion now, not gonna lie the woman has style and I am here for it

Speaking of champs and all that, the elite four, Rika...she is what I want to be I am not kidding her aesthetic is amazing and I am here for it like the little twirl she does when throwing her ball, her clothes, her attitude is just me and I am here for it seriously she is awesome and her losing animation is hilarious

Now for the best part of Scarlet and Violet...my dude Larry. I can’t talk about violet and scarlet without my boy Larry he is just...I don’t know how to describe it all I know is that Larry deserves good things and I’m glad the fanbase have just been like he’s ours now. 

As for the glitches and all that yeah they were bad area zero genuinely frustrated me with the don't wander off thing I don't have my ride and I have to wait for my group who keep clipping through the wall!! So yeah also I hate finizen thanks to that Pokémon's evolution I can never complete the pokedex nor can I do pokemon online thanks to Nintendo’s mummy grubbing ways argh! Regardless of that I enjoyed it, a good game and it has brought back a shy spark of hope that Arceus helped ignited prior. Plus it can be a surprisingly hard game and I love that!

jack remembered you from back in college. the two of you never really talked, you weren’t even in the same department—he studied medical sciences—nor were you in the same year, but he had seen you around campus a few times and distinctly remembered you as attractive. he had always considered talking to you, but before he had the opportunity to, calamity struck, and he became a flesh-eating demon.

his memories of you soon faded into the distance, and he had nearly forgotten about your existence when he saw you again on an empty street at dusk. he instantly recognized you, and from there, he silently followed you home, watching you from afar.

it was just curiosity at first, a hint of nostalgia perhaps, but quickly it developed into something far darker, far more sinister.

the first thing he noticed was your looks, particularly your size. he liked how small you were. he’s grown quite a bit since college, what with being a demon and all, and he loved the idea of the size difference between the two of you. he didn’t have much of an opinion on your hair colour, though he liked the waves. he couldn’t see them too well from outside your window, but he did take note of your sunspots, finding them beautiful.

jack paid close attention to what you wore, and he had discovered a few things. namely, that platform boots looked good, and summer dresses with thin cardigans were exceptionally attractive on you. additionally, he liked that you wore earrings, and he’d remember all the different ones.

he was ecstatic to find out what you did in your spare time and just how much you had in common. he didn’t think the majority of people read anymore, let alone wrote, so it was a more than pleasant surprise to find out that you did. what was even better was that you liked the same genres as him. it was particularly delightful to him that you wrote, and he couldn’t help but read them in secret while you weren’t home.

he also quite liked video games and anime himself, especially kingdom hearts. he used to play a fair amount of cod zombies when he was younger, and even a bit of pokemon though he didn’t like it as much as other games. still, he found it relaxing to watch you play, in particular, animal crossing.

jack enjoyed watching you decorating stationary, but what he even liked more was taking them, having stolen one of your notebooks for himself, leaving you to wonder just how in the world you had lost it.

something jack really liked about you was that you were introverted. he, too, was an introverted person, not exactly shy either, but just not up for being around others constantly, and he found it relieving that you were the same way. still, he saw the way you interacted with your friends, and he longed for the day when you would act the same way with him.

he had mixed feelings about how passive you were. on the one hand, he hated how hard you tried to please others, especially how you’d act as a complete pushover for them when they clearly weren’t worth the effort or energy. on the other hand, that was exactly how he wanted you to be, just that he wanted it only for himself.

jack was good with being able to read people’s feelings, but he liked how obvious yours were; it made you all the more vulnerable to him. he also noticed that you could be passive-aggressive, though he didn’t think it’d be a problem for him.

he had also observed you pacing around, zoning out for lengthy periods of time, and it always made him curious as to what exactly you were doing or thinking about. he wanted so badly to know every thought on your mind.

sometimes the people around you would find out that you had much to say on certain topics. they wouldn’t always listen to everything, but jack would. he would mentally record each and every word you said. the majority of the time, he found the topic just as fascinating as you did. even if it was information he already knew, he realized that he liked it more after hearing you talk about it.

jack wanted you for himself; that much was clear. the only reason he hadn’t done it yet was because he wasn’t sure how to go about it.

he knew that you were in college, even double majoring, which he found rather impressive. however, he wasn’t well versed in terms of computer science himself. he admired the amount of effort you put into your studies and your dedication. he also found it cute how competitive you could be. as someone who went to college himself, though he didn’t finish it, he understood the value and importance of it to you.

and so he had a hard time deciding what to do with you. the monstrous side of him sought to simply rip you from your life, taking you away from everything that you’d known so that you could be his and his alone. however, he didn’t want you to be unhappy. he liked you so much partially because he thought the two of you would be good together, and forcing you into it would ruin the point.

ideally, you would be able to continue your studies while being with him, and so he decided that he would take you, bring you to him as gently as possible, carefully coax you into a life with him. hopefully, then, you will be able to resume your studying without a problem.

however, if nothing he did worked, or if you caused him to fear your escape, he’d give in to his impulses and decide your fate for you.

I have just nabbed Pokemon Moon a few days ago and the brainrot has settled in so very hard so I am very happy to find someone who does Guzma requests so : Team Skull Grunts trying to help their boss out and trying to hook him up with reader insert, who he obviously has a thing for, in typical "genius" Team Skull fashion. Luckily for the Grunts and Guzma reader does actually like him too. I would just LOVE some awkward comedy of the Grunts trying to be Wingmen/women/folks because goddamn their boss deserves to be happy.

YES YES! YOU GET IT! I’m gonna write so much fluff, I hope you enjoy! Also I’m gonna use some of the names from the anime, these are not names in the game I just wanted to use something as to not get confused or say grunt every sentence, I don’t watch the anime I only have game memory.

Team skull say in a group circle, the only people missing is Guzma and Plumeria, and they guess you, the other unofficial member of the team, but that’s what they were here to discuss.

“Boss has it bad.”

Hums of agreement and nods were shared.

“I ain’t ever seen the boss get so tongue tied talkin before.”

The team mulls over what to do, Guzma gets so nervous around you, they all have watched him try to talk to you but it’s like the boss’s brain stops working when he does.

“I GOT IT!” Tupp jumps up gaining everyone’s attention “we just gotta help a bit! Maybe set up some candles or somethin! Like those movies do, that’ll get boss to be his usual self!”

The circle cheers and like that they were off.

Guzma has no idea what his grunts are up to, they are being secretive, but they are being so obvious about it he doesn’t understand, his punks tell him everything so why the sudden change and giggling?

“Boss! Boss! We need your help! Someone is attacking and beating is up at the Amalie city garden! We are losin big time!”

Guzma jumps up from his throne and bolts, he maybe rough around the edges but these are his punks, he will be damned if anything happens to them and they know it.

Once he reaches the garden it’s…quiet? He just now realized how late it is there are maybe two people here at most this late, where is his team? Where is the person said to be beating his team? Maybe it’s a trap, with that thought guzma slouches just a bit more, taking more cautious steps, if he can get the drop on whoever it’ll be an easy win he is a strong guy.

But nothing ever happens, he rounds a corner only to see…candles? He is so confused, what the hell is going on?

Rapidly approaching footsteps got his attention, quickly turning to see you run towards him in your pajamas, is is really that late?

“I-I came as, oh man, as soon as I could! Zipp told me there was something bad going on here and you were caught in the middle I-“ between you being out of breath and trying to talk, he is make a guess about what’s going on.

It’s only confirmed when the clinking of plates are heard and poorly played music starts, you two look to the table, dubious food on the plates, the glow of the candles isn’t helping it look better, and there stood one of the grunts, who has no idea how to play a violin, where did she even get a violin?

“What is the meanin of this!” Guzma finally yelled out of his stupor, the poor music stopping, two other team skull members pop out of the bushes, the three look so nervous.

“W-we’re sorry boss!”

“That doesn’t explain why ya lied not only to me but to them too! Do you know how late it is!? They were probably tryna sleep!….were you?” His grey eyes meet yours, trying not to show concern.

“I was actually, I had just put my phone down to sleep, I thought something had happened with how they were banging on my door.”

Guzma glares back at the three punks cowering before him.

“Apologize now and all ya have to do is clean the house.”

“But boss!”

“We were just tryna help, honest!”

“We didn’t mean to cause trouble this time!”

You tilt your head, help? What needs help?

“Is there something wrong? Do you guys need help with something? If so I’d be more than happy to lend a hand.” You smile, trying to lighten the mood.

Tupp, Rapp, and Zipp all perk up, looking at Guzma trying to gauge his reaction, and just as they expected his expression softens, a faint blush coating his cheeks and his hands tremble a bit before he crosses his arms, trying to cover it up.

“I guess I’ll bite, what help?”

Rapp slaps her hands on the other twos mouths “we can’t tell you yet boss, we’re sorry!” She can’t have these two ruining the plan.

Guzma sighs, frustrated at his teams antics, but your laughter calms him down.

“This whole situation is hilarious if I’m honest, but I’m wide awake now, do you wanna go for a walk?”

The grunts give lightning fast responses “oh sorry we must be off somewhere!” Before running away, leaving you and Guzma, who falls victim to your sweet expression.

“Why not, I’m awake anyways, anywhere in particular?”

You him before locking elbows with him “nope just where ever is fine.”

Guzma feels like his heart is beating out of his chest, he has been so smitten with you since you beat him at the shady mansion, though he was so mad, even more so with that soft smile of yours, he thought you were mocking him, then you simply walked over and offered to heal his Pokémon, you genuinely complimented him and his Pokémon, he took your words to heart, but that was almost a year ago, he still couldn’t confess.

You don’t need someone like him, you need someone who can spoil you out in public, take you places, show you the love and affection you deserve, he isn’t worth it, Guzma knows he loves you, he is so deeply in love, but you’re too good for someone like him.

You find the team skull antics cute, and their boss even cuter, you’ve noticed he gets shy on you, but it adds to his charm, he’s so sweet in a rabid Pokémon kinda way, you swear your head his pockets rattle, you know it in fact, when he calls out for certain grunts asking if they’ve had their medication yet, he cares for every last one of them like they are family, and he is so protective, you can’t help but fall for him.

Walking around really helped exhaust you, all that running you did to reach the Malie garden, and the adrenaline rush long over, you felt so tired.

“It’s like…really late, lemme walk ya home.”

“Oh sure, I don’t mind!”

You two simply basked in each other’s presence, you enjoyed spending any amount of time with him, finally reaching your door step you let go on his arm, which he quickly missed your warmth while you unlocked your door.

“Although if didn’t start out as such, thank you for the nice walk out tonight, Guzma.”

That smile of yours is going to be the death of him, you look at him like he hung the moon and stars, but in all fairness he would if you asked him.

“Eh not a problem, I’m…I’m sorry those runts got you roped into some weird plan of theirs, even I don’t know what they’re up to.”

His frustrated sigh makes you laugh, you enjoy that he hasn’t caught on, you thought it was obvious with the poorly made dinner and bad ‘romantic’ music.

You raise up on your tippy toes to reach this tree of a man’s cheek and place a quick kiss.

“Goodnight Guzma, I hope to see you tomorrow, I’d saaaaay maybe later tomorrow night? I know a nice field we can star gaze in.”

“Y-yeah-“

“Perfect! It’s a date then!” And like that you were behind your closed door, leaving a red faced stuttering guzma outside.

Faintly you hear ‘YES! YES!’ Being cheered outside, chuckling, you thought you broke him for a bit, laying in bed you can’t help but thank those three.

While Guzma is back in his room in Po town screaming into his pillow, he can’t believe that actually happened.

(OOC: Warning!! Big Spoilers for the Pokemon Scarlet and Violet DLC! I know it's been out for a little over two weeks (as of typing this) but I'd rather not accidentally spoil anyone)

AITA for being upset (and kinda selfish)?

I (teen, M) have lived on this island since I was born. I go to a school that’s on water but that’s not really important here. My school did a field trip to my home island with another school in a different region, and that’s how I met P (teen, NB?). My older sister, C (teen, F) came with me during the field trip, as we were the only two who knew our way around the place (it was two people from my school and four people from the other school). The goal of the field trip was to find these signposts that told a (what everyone who lived on the island believed at the time) folklore about an ogre (??? F, I’ll call her O) and three other animals (I feel the need to specify that O is an animal). We were divided into groups, and I was grouped with P, so we started looking for the signposts. There was also a festival that began the night we all got to the island.

Now, I believe O is super cool, and I really admire her, but everyone else believed that she was evil and mean, except P, who also thought O was cool. The festival was dedicated to the three other animals for driving the ogre away, and it revolved around masks. I thought that maybe I could show P the festival and we could become better friends (they were my friend! I was so happy to learn they thought we were friends), especially since I admired them because they were so strong.

At some point during the festival, P and C had gone off somewhere together and when I found them, C drove me off. I felt really bad because I thought both of them were making fun of me. In reality, it was the opposite. The next morning I eavesdropped on P and C’s conversation with my grandpa since C tried to drive me off again. Apparently, they saw O, had her mask, and the folktale the villagers believed in was wrong the whole time! O was just angry that the three animals stole her masks and hurt their friend.

I left the area and pretended that I hadn’t heard the conversation, and when P came so we could get the last signpost, they lied to me about the conversation! I don’t understand why they lied to me, they knew I liked O. I felt like I was being outcasted again. We got the last signpost, and they kept pretending they hadn’t met the ogre, which frustrated me.

The next day, I stole the O’s mask (P, C, and Grandpa kept it so they could fix it since it was a little broken) and challenged P to a battle. If P won they’d get the mask back. I felt like everyone was making me an outcast and I hated it! P won, and I might have accidentally caused the three animals to be revived somehow, but I gave the mask back and went home (I wasn't there when they were revived, but C told me it happened after I left).

Long story short, P defeated the tree animals and got O’s other masks back, while I convinced the villagers that O wasn’t evil and the three animals were. After I showed P, C, and O that the villagers understood, we walked O home, and it turned out that O wanted to be with P. I know I was being selfish, but I couldn’t just let that happen. I wanted O to come with me! The years I spent outcasted and feeling weak for liking O, compared to the few days P knew O, it just wasn’t fair! I battled P again, the winner would get O.

I lost. P has O now. I vowed that I would get stronger, stronger than P. C says I shouldn't be this upset but I am. I’m just. Getting a little tired of losing.

Edit: Forgot to mention that I battled P three other times before the two battles I talked about, I lost all five times. Anyway, C and I have to go back to our school early since something came up. Since my school specializes in battles, it’s the perfect chance for me to get stronger.

Edit 2: Apparently P is coming to my school as an exchange student. By the time they get here, I won’t be weak anymore. I’ll show them.
