Music Headcanons because I crave

Time: Obviously the occarina but he also has an amazing singing voice. Him and Malon dance around the ranch singing with eachother at random points in time whenever a tune pops into their head. And he loves learning new songs from the boys and will play for them to settle the mood.

Legend: Can perfectly play all of the instruments he owns including piano and a few others. Hates singing or more, it brings up bad memories. So he pretends that he can't and sticks with his instruments. (Fable can get him to sing...and very rarely you'll hear him humming to Hyrule to help calm him down in the dead of night. Or even more rarely to soothe himself when he's in an immense amount of pain and to out of it too care)

Sky: He has his harp and His voice, it's perfect and I'm not touching that.

Wind: Percussion and flute, but mostly mains Percussion. And has a wonderful singing voice but he doesn't believe it especially with how much his voice is starting to crack because of puberty. But him and Tetra have some pretty amazing harmony with one another when singing, they almost sound like Sirens.

Hyrule: Recorder and can sing. He's usually a bit off tune when he's singing or humming alone, but whennhes singing with someone it's a lot easier for him to stay on key. He's been learning from Dawn and Aroura.

Four: His occarina but also loves xylophones (and could listen to windchimes for hours) and is fairly good at singing but hes more of a hummer.

Warriors: Can not sing to save himself but can hum. He's an avid enjoyed of music but hasn't had the time or patience to learn any instruments.

Wild: Eventually learns a type of accordian from Kass because he became very used to listen to the bards ballads on his journey. He also picks up other odd instruments in his travels as well as how to sing because he's bored and lonely and it keeps things from being too quiet.

Twilight: We know he can howl tunes, and he 100% still does. But he also has a very soothing singing voice. When he meets time he picks up playing the ocarina. But in general he knows a couple of different string instruments! Mainly fiddle and either guitar or mandalin!

You finished at the top of your class at Top Gun and have worked diligently and fruitlessly to get to where you are now: North Island. You don the call-sign Wisteria not only because the beauty of the flower but because of its lethal qualities. i mention @roosterbruiser below bc i read landslide first but holy fuck indeed

landslide (series) It’s been almost three years since the accident that took half of her, and Faye “Clover” Ledger seems fine, really. She loves her old house, she has a perpetually expanding vinyl collection, she’s got a job she likes on base, and she is only a short drive from the beach. She’s grounded--literally. @roosterbruiser landslide is one of those fics i have to read in little bits because it’s just too good. beautiful writing that just transports me (and i love faye, she may be the most developed fanfic oc i’ve ever read - and I love her taste in music)

baby let’s play house // pt 2  you got yourself in trouble. bradley has a bit of a savior complex. together, you come up with what could potentially be the worst idea in the longstanding and illustrious history of bad ideas. @seasonsbloom i just really love this fic, it shows all the quietest best parts of bradley

first impressions  at the induction day for the newest recruits of the Golden Warriors of VFA 87, rooster assumes you’re a civilian, instead of, you know, a member of his team? you see how far you can push it before he figures it out.  @ohcaptains‘s pilot in this fic is the badass bitch i wish i could be. as well as fucking funny.

like i can (series) After yet another bad date and tired of swiping on apps, the Dagger Squad steps in to help you out by setting you up on a series of blind dates. Much to Rooster’s dismay. @sometimesanalice perfect blend of cute, funny and heartmelting

loving your posts, especially your music posts! one of my partners is getting me into Gravity Falls so I’m excited to see your fic when you’re done with it (godspeed 🙏🏻)

I’ve been putting playlists for characters togeyher and always felt like something was missing, ao your post about how to avoid making it sound like your taste was really helpful.

All that said, I’ve been doing research, and I came across a…category? Subgenre? idk it seems to cross a lot of genres - whatever, called “murder ballads”. Are there any characters you’ve made playlists for that murder ballads would fall on? (There’s a wiki page with a list of 132 of ‘em, the ones I’m familiar with are the country murder ballads like Goodbye Earl, Independence Day [by Martina McBride], and Two Black Cadillacs, but there’s songs with different parent genres on there like metal, folk, pop, rock, and medieval.)

"Murder ballad" is like, "love song". It describes the subject matter but not the style of the song itself. They tend to gravitate toward certain genres but it's not a genre-specific label.

Outside Gravity Falls, i've put murder ballads on Alastor—1920s jazz murder ballads, and EARLY early folk murder ballads (he had to listen to SOMETHING as a kid before he was old enough to go watch jazz bands, and dude's morbid).

Inside Gravity Falls, I see old Appalachian murder ballads for Fiddleford (but he's a character i haven't sufficiently fleshed out a playlist for yet, just haven't made the time; Appalachian murder ballads are a genre I've specifically earmarked to dig into for him tho). My Fidds playlist currently has a bluegrass cover of "In The Pines" (better known as "Where Did You Sleep Last Night"—you might know the Nirvana or Lead Belly version), although I wanna find a different cover of that song because the specific one I added to the playlist took out the actual murder lyrics lmfao.

For a while I had a few 1950s murder ballads on Stan's playlist—Mack The Knife, Stagger Lee, Folsom Prison Blues—but I've taken most of them off because uh... i got tired of listening to them sdflkfh. I need to find fresh ones to put on that I'm not yet tired of. In general, for Stan I try to steer toward 1950s songs—preferably rock n roll—about crime, prisons, murder.

If you have spotify, I recommend the podcast Murder Ballads (unfortunately a spotify exclusive, so that's the only way to listen to it). It's only six episodes but it goes over the history of murder ballads AND gives several covers of each featured song across genres/years

As I'm chipping away at this Zevlor fic, I thought it would be fun to give you a little glimpse behind the curtain of my creative process. (Nobody asked for this, I'm well aware, but I like talking about the how of things.)

There's a very specific ambience I'm trying to capture with this piece; heady, romantic, and intensely sincere in that bluegrass folksy indie type of way. At least some people will understand what I'm trying to say, I hope.

A lot of my writing relies on ambience while I'm piecing things together. I'm listening to a lot of folk music (specifically a revived version of the now long dead Spotify 'sexy as folk' playlist), and a lot of stuff with heavy string instrument usage. Cello and violin are playing a big part in the setup of all of this for me - I don't really have the words to explain why it feels right for Zevlor's character, it just kind of does. Classical with a modern edge, devotion with all of the intensity of an orchestral swell.

Expect the fic late this evening. I am still sick, and trying to wade through my porridge brain to get this done has been a surprisingly refreshing challenge! I'm literally too tired to be overly-critical of everything I'm putting down on the page, and it's letting me be a lot more free with my prose.

Hi!!! I have mildly reigned in my Clarkson music thoughts:

I think Wayne would be pretty set in his ways with the music he likes. Country, bluegrass, folk music. All very acoustic-based. Lots of lyrics about travelling and wandering. Songs that are probably very sad too.

Some musicians: early Bob Dylan, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Patsy Cline, Gram Parsons/The Byrds, James Taylor.

He’d be pretty chuffed at the idea of a bunch of his faves forming The Travelling Willburys. They released their first album in 1988 (which Eddie buys him).

I don’t know why I’m envisioning Scott as liking a lot of female singer-songwriters from the 70s and that’s where there would be an overlap with Wayne’s music tastes. Like Wayne loves learns that Scott likes Emmylou Harris and Linda Ronstadt. He likes Carol King and Joni Mitchell the most.

Buuut I also think Scott would be into more contemporary stuff for the time, considering he’s a middle school teacher so he overhears a lot of music talk and has needed to confiscate a Walkman or two in his time!

Talking Heads, Peter Gabriel. I could totally see him liking the techo-whatever (I don’t know music terms) of groups like Devo too.

I'm now resisting the strong urge to write a ficlet of Scott making Wayne a mixtape!

Okay so it took me a while until i actually had time to answer this with the attention it deserves but THANK YOU I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS. I will now be obsessively thinking about Scott giving Wayne a mixtape bc holy shit that is the most adorable thing ever i am screaming into my pillow!!! He'd be all embarrassed about it like "i know it's something silly that all my middle schoolers do but those songs made me think of you and i wanted to share them with you" (idk if they're already officially together or still in that awkward are-we-dating-or-not phase but eddie would be watching this interaction from the couch like 👀👀👀👀👀👀 and tease wayne about it for the next 100 years. i would devour any fic about this tbh)

And i'm so glad you agree with me about Wayne being a James Taylor sad country bluegrass man! So I don't know if anyone else be interested in this, but I've put together a playlist for writing OFMD fic of british and irish folk songs from the 17th and early 18th century

Obviously these are modern recordings, and therefore feature modern folk instrumentation, but where possible I've tried to pick recordings which only use instruments which existed at the time.

We have a limited number of songs from the period, so I haven't been too fussy, but I've tried to weight towards songs about the sea (and found two whole songs about pirates - i was very excited to discover captain kidd is way older than i thought!), or which have themes I think Frenchie would approve of (yes, the world turned upside down is on here, obviously)

It might not be what most people are expecting: sea shanties really weren't a thing until the 19th century in any significant sense, although there are some songs we now think of as shantys which are actually much older songs that got repurposed, which i have included. (And some you probably think are pretty modern - yes, Whiskey in the Jar is period appropriate). I have also included some of the Childe balads for which we don't have a date, but the style of song Childe collected mean they're very likely to be period appropriate. My one little anachronism is The Worst Ship, which is probably 19th century, but it has such perfect vibes I couldn't resist.

Anyway, feel free to check it out, and if any of you have suggestions for period appropriate songs I missed (especially if you can suggest any dance tunes - I'm a singer not a musician so I'm terrible on the names of tunes, and doing folk research online is basically impossible because the internet thinks mumford and sons and apalachian bluegrass are both the same thing as trad folk), I'd love to hear them!

In the beginning, it was just Andromeda and Bella. And it was just the two of them until it was too much.

One of my all time favorites. Pinnacle of wonderfully fucked up Bellatrix/Andromeda.

 It's the 90's and springtime in New York. Remus is dealing cocaine, Sirius is looking to get high.

He felt a twinge of paranoia. He thought, This is a junkie. One way or another. You don’t take walks with people you sell cocaine to. And he might be rich. Do not say yes.

He’d never seen grey eyes quite like that before.

Maybe my favorite Muggle AU of all time? It’s so New York in the 90s and also so wolfstar and so perfect and I just fell in love with Sirius right alongside Remus.

How would Remus and the others react and handle this? Remember, Tonks is in her last trimester, her dad just died, she's still being hunted down by Bellatrix and everyone is in hiding, and suddenly Undesirable No 1 shows up with a tortured Hermione, former hostages and a dead house elf and his presence is now potentially threatening everyone's safety..

Lonely and frustrated on house arrest, with no prospects for the future, Draco begins brewing Felix Felicis in an attempt to improve his lot. Just in the short term, of course. He isn’t a total idiot.

But before long he finds himself with a thriving business, a nice flat, some actual (albeit irritatingly Gryffindor) friends, and a very satisfying sex life. What’s more, no-one is hexing him in the street. And Harry Potter is single, and gorgeous, and giving Draco decidedly interested looks.

The title Strike the Lucky Twice comes from the song "Crazy Faith" by Alison Krauss & Union Station (bluegrass 💜):

Love is lightning, love is ice It only strikes the lucky twice Once so you will know the price And once for crazy faith

This one is a Waxer/Boil fic that was inspired by the Waxer*Boil Month 2024 Week 2 prompt "Coruscant Guard Waxer" but came too late for me to actually write it in time. I'll get it out there eventually!

Anyway, the premise is that when Waxer "died" on Umbara he was actually reconditioned, memory-wiped, and sent to the Coruscant Guard. He doesn't remember Boil or the 212th, but he dreams sometimes about things he can't explain and people he doesn't know. Eventually, Boil also "dies" and ends up with the Guard. They don't remember each other, but something draws them together.

Waxer tells Boil about his dreams:

“I never dream about anything… big. No battles. No batchmates. I don't dream about fighting, or training, or even getting hurt. Nothing exciting or scary. Just… quiet moments. Little things. Putting on my boots or enjoying a cup of caf or… or the feeling of rain on my face. And I think… I think maybe you and I had a lot of quiet moments together.”

There's a bit more than that written, and I have a pretty good idea of where it will go plot-wise, but mostly it's just a love story 😊
